Millimeter-wave rotary-wing (RW) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) air-to-ground (A2G) links face unpredictable Doppler effect arising from the inevitable wobbling of RW UAV. Moreover, the time-varying channel characteristics during transmission lead to inaccurate channel estimation, which in turn results in the deteriorated bit error probability performance of the UAV A2G link. This paper studies the impact of mechanical wobbling on the Doppler effect of the millimeter-wave wireless channel between a hovering RW UAV and a ground node. Our contributions of this paper lie in: i) modeling the wobbling process of a hovering RW UAV; ii) developing an analytical model to derive the temporal autocorrelation function (ACF) for the millimeter-wave RW UAV A2G link in a closed-form expression; and iii) investigating how RW UAV wobbling impacts the Doppler effect on the millimeter-wave RW UAV A2G link. Numerical results show that different RW UAV wobbling patterns impact the amplitude and the frequency of ACF oscillation in the millimeter-wave RW UAV A2G link. The use of antenna arrays is indispensable in radar and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communications areas, as it permits the treatment of wavefronts in the spatial domain, enabling important applications such as beamforming and target detection. Spatial information is commonly given in terms of spatial correlation functions (SCFs), but its representation in terms of angular domain, such as the power azimuth spectrums (PASs), is sometimes more convenient. Therefore, transforming from SCF to PAS, and vice versa, is often required. This is commonly done by employing so-called beamformers, where the Bartlett beamformer (BB) is the most commonly utilized. However, the use of beamformers alone is not enough for retrieving PAS information from a given SCF. Particularly, this paper shows that a non-linear operation is missing in relating SCFs to PASs as provided by current beamformers. The paper also shows the mathematical expressions that correctly relate SCFs to PASs and wavenumber spectrums (WNSs) for the general case of systems with antenna arrays. In this paper, performance is investigated for a random access packet composed of a preamble and message. To minimize the error probability of a packet with channel-adaptive random access, the optimum energy allocation is obtained between the preamble and the message. This paper addresses the channel estimation issue for millimeter wave (mmWave) massive MIMO systems with lens antenna array. Firstly, we formulate the channel estimation problem into the framework of sparse signal recovery. The formulation takes into account of the energy focusing property of the lens antenna array as well as the mutipath sparsity in mmWave MIMO channels. Then we develop an expectation maximization (EM) based algorithm to learn the parameters in the formulation, thereby fulfilling the channel estimation. This paper presents a comparative performance analysis of multiuser multirelay two-way and one-way amplify-and-forward relaying systems employing opportunistic transmission in the presence of channel estimation error and hardware impairments over Rayleigh fading channels. Considering such a practical scenario, we first deduce instantaneous end-to-end signal-to-noise-plus-distortion-and-error ratios at the end-user terminals. Then, we derive exact closed-form expressions of outage probability (OP) and expected spectral efficiency for both the systems. Further, we obtain simple asymptotic expressions at the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, which facilitate the characterization of achievable diversity order of the systems. Thereafter, we validate our derived analytical expressions with the simulation results, which are sufficiently tight across the entire range of SNRs. Eventually, we optimize power allocation in order to minimize OP of the systems. Numerical results reveal the improvement in system outage when power allocation is in accordance with its optimal value. Findings of the paper suggest that full diversity order can be achieved only when the radio frequency front-end hardware is assumed to be perfect, while in practice the imperfections in hardware are inevitable and will reduce system diversity. In underwater acoustic (UWA) adaptive communication system, due to time-varying channel, the transmitter often has outdated channel state information (CSI), which results in low efficiency. UWA channels are much more difficult to estimate and predict than terrestrial wireless channels, given the more severe multipath environments with varying propagation speeds in different locations, non-linear propagation paths, several-order higher propagation latency, mobile transceiver and obstacles in the sea, etc. To handle the complexity, this paper proposes an efficient online CSI prediction model for UWA CSI prediction considering the complicated correlationship of UWA channels in both the time and frequency domains. This paper designs a learning model called CsiPreNet, which is an integration of a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN) and a long short term memory (LSTM) network. The performance is compared with the widely used recursive least squares (RLS) predictor, the approximate linear dependency recursive kernel least-squares (ALD-KRLS), and two common conventional deep neural networks (DNN) predictors, i.e., back propagation neural network (BPNN) and LSTM network using the measured data recorded in the South China Sea. To validate the efficacy of prediction, we investigate the prediction of CSI in simulated downlink UWA orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems. Specifically, the measured UWA channel is used in the OFDMA system. A joint subcarrier-bit-power adaptive allocation scheme is used for resource allocation. To further improve the performance, we develop an offline-online prediction scheme, enabling the prediction results to be more stable. Simulation and experimental results show that the CsiPreNet has superior performance than the existing solutions, thanks to its capability in capturing both the temporal and frequency correlation of the UWA CSIs. This correspondence paper studies the impact of nonidentically distributed channel estimation error on performance of a scheduled space-time block coding with mean-value power allocation in cognitive-radio multiple-input multiple-output system. Using the derived probability density function, the exact closed-form expressions of the proposed system for outage probability, ergodic capacity, and symbol-error rate (SER) with both $\rm M$ -ary quadrature amplitude modulation and phase shift keying modulation are derived. Using asymptotic analysis, this paper quantifies the diversity order for both outage probability and SER in the presence of nonidentically distributed error. From the analysis results, this paper shows that the diversity order is enhanced by the multiuser diversity as the number of user terminals increases regardless of outage probability and SER, while the spatial diversity is eliminated. This paper investigates the performance analysis of dual selection (i.e., combining user selection and transmit antenna selection) with maximal ratio combining (MRC) over nonidentical imperfect channel estimation in a multiple-input multiple-output system. This paper derives the exact and approximate cumulative density function and probability density function (PDF) for the dual selection with MRC over nonidentical imperfect channel estimation. Using the distribution, the exact and approximate closed-form expressions of the outage probability are derived with quantification of diversity order. Further, this paper derived the exact ergodic capacity and approximate outage capacity of the the dual selection via Gaussian and Gamma approximations. The numerical results show that the capacity of the dual selection with MRC is enhanced by the number of receive antennas as well as the number of user terminals and sum of channel correlation coefficients, while the order of the receive spatial diversity for outage probability is eliminated by the nonidentical channel estimation error. Millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency spectrum offers orders of magnitude greater spectrum to mitigate the severe spectrum shortage in conventional cellular bands. To overcome the high propagation loss in the mmWave band, massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) can be adopted at both transmitter and receiver to provide large beamforming gains. At the same time, hybrid architecture is applied to reduce the huge power consumption caused by devices operating at radio frequency (RF). However, because of the hybrid architecture and large number of antennas, it is hard to obtain the channel state information (CSI) which is crucial for obtaining desirable beamforming gains. Off-grid error and sparsity pattern (SP) estimation error are two main limiting factors of the performance of most existing compressive sensing (CS) based channel estimation (CE) algorithms. Off-grid error presents when the true angle does not lie on the discretized angle grid of mmWave channel in the spatial domain. In this paper, we first propose a fast Bayesian matching pursuit method with ‘virtual sparsity’ to improve the accuracy of SP estimation and name it as the improved Bayesian matching pursuit (IBMP). Then an enhanced algorithm, named off-grid IBMP (OG-IBMP), is developed to mitigate the off-grid problem, followed by a theoretical analysis of OG-IBMP. This method iteratively updates the selected grid points and updates the corresponding parameters based on the maximum a posteriori (MAP) criterion. Numerical simulations are performed to validate our theoretical analysis and evaluate the performance of the proposed method. Compared to other existing methods, the results show that our proposed OG-IBMP algorithm greatly reduces the off-grid error and significantly enhances the accuracy of the SP estimation with low computational complexity. Recently, research on the design of relay structure and optimal precoding matrix in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay systems has been proposed in many works assuming that partial or all of the channel state information (CSI) is known. However, in the practical communication systems, the CSI is unknown and needs to be estimated. In particular, channel estimation is more difficult when the relay adopts a hybrid precoding structure. In this paper, we propose an efficient channel estimation scheme based on Tucker-2 tensor model for a multi-way massive MIMO hybrid relay system. The proposed algorithm provides all the CSI involved in the communication links at each user end. Compared with traditional channel estimation algorithms, the proposed algorithm has better estimation performance and requires few iterations to achieve convergence. In addition, we derive the analytical expression of the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRB) for reference. In this paper, we propose a reference-free artificial noise (AN) waveform design and cancellation scheme for single-input-single-output (SISO) wireless secure transmission. First, a system structure with the aid of AN is presented, where we provide a specific method extracting the sign information of each symbol from the desired signal (DS) to form AN at the transmitter. Then, we notice that the legitimate receiver enable to reconstruct the AN from the received signal by almost the same method as the transmitter without AN reference, which reduces the system complexity in practice. Subsequently, the AN cancellation performance and the secrecy capacity at the receiver are analyzed, and their upper bounds are also derived. Finally, simulation results confirm that the proposed reference-free AN design and cancellation scheme can effectively suppress the AN at legitimate receiver, while degrades the signal to noise ratio (SNR) at eavesdropper seriously, which provides impressive secure performance in terms of secrecy capacity. Previous correlation-based wideband multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) channel models have been limited to non-line-of-sight (NLoS) scenarios where simple antenna correlation measurements are sufficient to describe the correlated Gaussian process representing the fading statistics. However, in the presence of line-of-sight (LoS) or specular reflections, simple antenna correlation measurements unfortunately do not lead to accurate fading characterizations. In this paper, we propose a trend-stationary correlation-based analytical model for wideband LoS and NLoS MIMO channels and design and validate a wideband multitone MIMO channel sounder and estimator to, respectively, measure channel impulse responses (CIRs) and estimate channel parameters for this model. Joint maximum-likelihood (ML) estimation of the LoS component and the NLoS complex correlation matrix is presented. In addition to enabling the estimation of the path correlation matrix of a wireless channel in the presence of LoS components, the modeling approach also provides tools to evaluate the validity of the assumption of uncorrelated scattering (US), even in LoS environments, which is commonly used in channel modeling. A more general model that does not assume US is also presented, which can likewise be estimated using the proposed estimator. To validate the channel sounding/model estimator techniques, we employ channel sounding waveforms and collect snapshots from the outputs of a state-of-the-art hardware MIMO channel emulator capable of emulating multipath channels under the US assumption. Receiver signal processing and channel parameter estimation are performed on the collected data, and the results are compared with the emulated channel parameters. The work is unique in that it provides a correlation-based multipath MIMO channel modeling approach that addresses LoS environments, it describes corresponding estimation techniques to extract the full complex correlation matrix, and the model estimators are backed using channel sounding with emulation-based validation. In this paper, we investigate a two-hop simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) amplify-and-forward (AF) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay communication system with an energy-limited relay node. The relay node harvests energy based on the radio-frequency (RF) signal transmitted from the source node through the time-switching (TS) protocol and fully uses the harvested energy to precode and forward the information to the destination node. The non-linear energy harvesting models are considered at the relay node. With the consideration of the channel estimation error, the joint optimization of the TS factor, source and relay precoding matrices is proposed with robustness against the channel state information (CSI) mismatch to maximize the mutual information (MI) between the source and destination nodes. The optimal structure for the source and relay precoding matrices is derived to simplify the transceiver optimization problem. Channel predictions are important to achieve high spectral efficiency for high-mobility vehicles. Channel extrapolation, used by many prediction methods, suffers from a limited prediction horizon in difficult radio environments. The predictor antenna (PA) concept provides the prediction horizons required for efficient transmission to fast-moving vehicles by measuring the channel ahead of time with an extra antenna placed on the vehicle. This paper presents a general framework that addresses the practical signal processing challenges of the PA concept. It is adaptable to a vast variety of vehicular deployment, mobility, and communication scenarios. A new theoretical prediction normalized mean-squared error (NMSE) expression is derived based on the presented framework. The framework is demonstrated by applying it to extensive channel measurements and comparing the PA predictions to Kalman-based channel predictions and outdated channel estimates. By studying the impact of vehicular velocity and radio environment on the prediction performance, it is shown that PA prediction is weaker at low velocities, where Kalman prediction methods are sufficient, but is uncontested at high velocities in environments without a dominating path. At millimeter-wave (mm-wave) frequencies, narrow beamwidth and inaccurate channel estimation result in beam alignment errors, which degrade the achievable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and rate. The extent of beam misalignment depends on the various link parameters, however, prior works ignored such a dependence and considered oversimplified array patterns. This paper formulates beam alignment errors for the uniform linear array at the base station as a function of the link parameters by using the Cramér Rao lower bound of angle-of-arrival estimates and proposes a tractable array pattern approximation to better reflect the effects of such alignment errors. Utilizing stochastic geometry and the statistics of the Student’s t-distribution, a novel and robust analytical technique is developed to obtain the downlink SNR and rate coverage probabilities due to beam misalignment, assuming a single antenna at the user. We show that beam alignment errors significantly affect the achievable SNR and rate for non line-of-sight (NLOS)/distant users whereas the effect is negligible for LOS/nearby users. It is also illustrated that the effects of alignment errors cannot be mitigated only by increasing the number of antennas. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) control information delivery is a critical communication with stringent requirements in terms of reliability and latency. In this context, link adaptation plays an essential role in the fulfillment of the required performance in terms of decode error probability and delay. Link adaptation is usually based on channel quality indicator (CQI) feedback information from the user equipment that should represent the current state of the channel. However, measurement, scheduling and processing delays introduce a CQI aging effect, that is a mismatch between the current channel state and its CQI representation. Using outdated CQI values may lead to the selection of a wrong modulation and coding scheme, with a detrimental effect on performance. This is particularly relevant in ultra reliable and low latency communications (URLLC), where the control of the reliability can be negatively impacted, and it is more evident when the channel is fast varying as the case of UAVs. This paper analyzes the effects of CQI aging on URLLCs, considering transmissions under the finite blocklength regime, that characterizes such communications type. A deep learning approach is investigated to predict the next CQI from the knowledge of past reports, and performance in terms of decode error probability and throughput is given. Range-based positioning using wireless signal has gained remarkable attention in past decades. Accurately extracting the distance information, i.e., estimating parameters of individual multipath, is of interest. It has been shown that diffuse multipath component (DMC) in wireless propagation channel has significant influence on channel estimation and, thus, the ranging performance. In addition to specular component (SC), DMC should be considered in order to improve the estimated accuracy of channel paths’ parameters and, thus, the ranging performance. In this paper, we extend the quasi-maximum likelihood space-alternating generalized expectation-maximization (SAGE) algorithm by incorporating an autoregressive moving average (ARMA) filter to estimate the channel parameters under the presence of DMC. The parameters of both DMC and SC are estimated in an iterative approach, where the DMC is assumed as colored noise and the ARMA-filter is used to estimate the contributions from DMC. The validation of the algorithm based on measured data shows that both SC and DMC can be accurately estimated by the proposed approach. In this paper, we design receivers for filter bank multicarrier-based (FBMC-based) massive MIMO considering practical aspects such as channel estimation and equalization. In particular, we propose a spectrally efficient pilot structure and a channel estimation technique in the uplink to jointly estimate all the users’ channel impulse responses. We mathematically analyze our proposed channel estimator and find the statistics of the channel estimation errors. These statistics are incorporated into our proposed equalizers to deal with the imperfect channel state information (CSI) effect. We revisit the channel equalization problem for FBMC-based massive MIMO, address the shortcomings of the existing equalizers in the literature, and make them more applicable to practical scenarios. The proposed receiver in this paper consists of two stages. In the first stage, a linear combining of the received signals at the base station (BS) antennas provides a coarse channel equalization and removes any multiuser interference. In the second stage, a per subcarrier fractionally spaced equalizer (FSE) takes care of any residual distortion of the channel for the user of interest. We propose an FSE design based on the equivalent channel at the linear combiner output. This enables the applicability of our proposed technique to small and/or distributed antenna setups such as cell-free massive MIMO. Applying non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in millimeter-wave (mmWave) networks has the potential to significantly enhance the spectral efficiency. In this paper, we propose an opportunistic beam-splitting NOMA scheme to fully exploit the antenna array gain in downlink mmWave networks, where single- and double-beam NOMA transmissions are dynamically enabled according to the spatial angle difference between the paired NOMA users, thereby enhancing the flexibility of applying NOMA in mmWave networks. The base station with a single radio frequency chain implements the double-beam NOMA transmission by adopting the beam-splitting technique. We develop a unified theoretical performance analysis framework for the proposed scheme, while taking into account the spatially random users, link blockage model, and general distance-based user pairing strategy. By using tools from stochastic geometry, we derive the exact expressions of the coverage probability and the sum rate of the proposed scheme under both the LoS exponential and ball models. We further derive the corresponding upper bound to simplify the analytical expressions. Simulations validate the theoretical analysis and demonstrate the performance gains of the proposed scheme in terms of the coverage probability and sum rate over the conventional single-beam NOMA and orthogonal multiple access (OMA) schemes. This paper presents the secrecy performance of a user and antenna selection at transmitter (i.e., combined scheme) over channel estimation inaccuracy in wiretap channels with multiple antennas. This paper develops the precise formulations of the combined system for the secrecy outage probability and the probability of the non-zero secrecy capacity. This work develops the diversity order for the secrecy outage probability in the presence and absence of channel inaccuracy at the combined system and eavesdropper. This work provides various numerical evaluations, showing that, the diversity order of the combined system is changed only by combined system‘s channel inaccuracy not by eavesdropper's channel inaccuracy. In this paper, rate and subcarrier bandwidth adaptation (RSBA) on the average spectral efficiency of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems using $M$-ary quadrature amplitude modulation ($M$-QAM) is investigated in the presence of frequency-selective and very rapidly time-varying fading channels. The closed-form expressions for rate and capacity with perfect channel state information (CSI) and imperfect CSI are derived. In this paper, imperfect CSI is caused jointly by channel estimation error and unavoidable delay between when CSI is estimated and when the estimation results are used for actual transmission. The capacity with perfect CSI is just a special case of imperfect CSI. Based on the closed-form expressions of the maximum capacity, optimal RSBA algorithms with perfect and imperfect CSI are proposed, respectively. Theoretical and numerical results show that the RSBA scheme can improve the system performance effectively under the perfect-CSI case. It can make a tradeoff between intercarrier interference (ICI) and transmission efficiency by considering the cyclic prefix. The results also show that the RSBA scheme is effective in repelling the impact of outdated CSI, as well as in reducing the impact of channel estimation error, but to a lesser extent. This paper concerns the uplink of multicell multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. To tackle the effect of pilot contamination that is generally viewed as a bottleneck in previous work, this paper presents a superimposed pilot (SP)-aided uplink channel estimation scheme and mathematically characterizes the impact that an SP has on the performance of such a very large MIMO system. It is shown that there are two types of interference components that do not vanish, even when the number of antennas $M$ grows to infinity. The first type, which is referred to as cross-contamination, is due to the correlation between the SP and data among different cells. The second type, which is referred to as self-contamination, is due to the dependence between channel estimation and estimation error. Cross-contamination is, in principle, similar to pilot contamination in a conventional pilot-based multicell MIMO system, whereas self-contamination is unique for the SP-aided scheme. Both theoretical and simulation results demonstrate that the SP-aided scheme can effectively reduce the estimation contamination by increasing the data frame size and, in turn, achieve a significant improvement over the spectral efficiency, in comparison with conventional pilot-based methods. This paper studies a cognitive radio network (CRN), in which a multiple-input single-output (MISO) secondary transmitter (SU-Tx) aims to send confidential messages to its receiver (SU-Rx) in the presence of unknown eavesdroppers, while having to control its generated interference to the primary users (PUs) under a given threshold. Because the eavesdroppers are unknown, this paper considers the artificial noise (AN) approach or masked beamforming to provide the information secrecy. The objective of this paper is to maximize the power of AN in order to degrade the eavesdroppers, subject to the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraint at the SU-Rx, as well as the interference temperature limits (ITLs) for the PUs. In the case of perfect channel state information (CSI), we reveal that the optimal strategy for the information-bearing signal is beamforming. Imperfect CSI cases of bounded and stochastic uncertainties are investigated. In the case of ellipsoid-bounded errors, we derive the equivalent forms for the SINR and ITL constraints and then transform the optimization problem into a form of semidefinite programming (SDP). For the case of probabilistic CSI uncertainties, we propose an outage-constrained robust formulation where the CSI errors are Gaussian distributed. Compressive sensing (CS) has been widely used in vehicular technology including compressive spectrum sensing, sparse channel estimation, and vehicular communications. The complete procedure of CS consists of sparse representation, sparse measurement, and sparse recovery. In the CS, measurement matrix $\mathbf {\Phi }$ is utilized to sample a sparse signal, while sensing matrix $\mathbf {\Psi }$ is exploited for sparse recovery. It is important to properly design the sensing matrix that significantly affects the signal recovery performance. This paper addresses the issue of the sensing matrix design for the CS with multiple measurement vectors (MMV). We first study sufficient conditions for the MMV-CS and then develop three sensing matrix design approaches in different situations. The proposed methods have their roots in the principle of minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) beamformer. This allows us to optimally determine the sensing matrix in the framework of the MVDR, which amounts to minimizing local cumulative cross-coherence between $\mathbf {\Phi }$ and $\mathbf {\Psi }$ while keeping the columns of $\mathbf {\Psi }$ highly correlated to their counterparts of $\mathbf {\Phi }$. In multi-user multiple-input–multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems that employ pilot-symbol aided channel estimation, the pilot-to-data power ratio (PDPR) has a large impact on the system performance. In this paper, we consider the problem of setting the PDPR in multi-cell MU-MIMO systems in the presence of channel estimation errors, intercell interference and pilot contamination. To analyze and address this problem, we first develop a model of the multi-cell MU-MIMO system and derive a closed-form expression for the mean squared error of the uplink received data symbols. Building on this result, we then propose two decentralized PDPR-setting algorithms based on game theoretic approaches that are applicable in multi-cell systems. We find that both algorithms converge to a Nash equilibrium and provide performance improvements over systems that do not properly set the PDPR, while they maintain different levels of fairness. This paper focuses on precoding design for sum-rate maximization while considering the effects of residual self-interference for multiuser multiple-input–multiple-output (MU-MIMO) full-duplex (FD) systems. The problem formulation leads to a nonconvex matrix-variable optimization problem, where we develop two efficient sum-rate maximization algorithms using sequential convex programming (SCP), namely, the difference of convex functions (DC)-based and the sequential convex approximations for matrix-variable programming (SCAMP) algorithms. In addition, we derive the achievable sum rate under the effect of residual self-interference. Simulation results show that, even in cases of high self-interference and high estimation error, the SCAMP algorithm provides approximately 20%–30% sum-rate improvements over both conventional optimized half-duplex (HD) transmission and the existing state-of-the-art FD algorithm in a wide range of scenarios. Finally, the convergence results indicate that the DC-based algorithm tends to initially give the best performance; however, at convergence, the SCAMP algorithm tends to significantly outperform the other algorithms. In multiantenna downlink, linear precoders like channel inversion (CI), regularized CI (RCI), and phase alignment (PA) are more desirable than their nonlinear counterparts due to their reduced complexity. However, to exploit the full benefits of multiuser downlink, the availability of perfect channel state information (CSI) at the base station (BS) is mandatory. Since such an assumption is not realistic in practice, subject to CSI mismatch, the downlink precoders may undergo a severe degradation in performance. Therefore, an adaptive linear precoder is required to achieve better performance under the availability of imperfect CSI at the BS. In this paper, we propose such a linear precoder by judiciously picking up an optimized regularization parameter based on the knowledge of the channel estimation error variance in advance. To do so, we first introduce a generalized CSI mismatch model where the variance of the channel estimation error is a function of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and is thus able to accommodate a variety of distinct scenarios such as reciprocal channels and CSI feedback. This paper addresses energy-efficient power control for time-division-duplexing (TDD) multiple-input–single-output (MISO) systems. Assuming ideal channel reciprocity, the beamforming at the transmitter (TX) is based on the estimated channel state information (CSI) obtained from the pilot signal of the receiver (RX). We define the energy efficiencies of the TX and the RX separately and study their energy efficiency region. In addition, we seek a power control scheme that can achieve all the points on the Pareto boundary of the energy efficiency region. We propose to maximize the weighted system energy efficiency, which is the data rate divided by the weighted sum of the power consumption at the TX and the RX. A method based on the quasi-concavity of the weighted system energy efficiency is developed to solve the problem. In practical propagation environments, different massive MIMO users can have correlated angles in spatial paths. In this paper, we study the effect of angle correlation on inter-user channel correlation via a combination of measurement and analysis. We show three key results. First, we collect a massive MIMO channel dataset for examining the inter-user channel correlation in a real-world propagation environment; the dataset is now open-access. We observed channel correlation higher than 0.48 for all close-by users. Additionally, over 30% of far-away users, even when they are tens of wavelengths apart, have inter-user channel correlation that is at least twice higher than the correlation in the i.i.d. Rayleigh fading channel. Second, we compute the inter-user channel correlation in closed-form as a function of inter-user angle correlation, the number of base-station antennas, and base-station inter-antenna spacing. Our analysis shows that inter-user angle correlation increases the inter-user channel correlation. Inter-user channel correlation reduces with a larger base-station array aperture, i.e., more antennas and larger inter-antenna spacing. Third, we explain the measurements with numerical experiments to show that inter-user angle correlation can result in significant inter-user channel correlation in practical massive MIMO channels. In this paper, we consider the orthogonal frequency division modulation (OFDM) based integrated radar-communication (Rad-Com) for automobile systems operating in millimeter wave band with imperfect time-frequency synchronization for communications. Since different pilot power allocation and placement strategies can result in different performance, we investigate the power allocation and placement design for the Rad-Com system. We analyze the effect of power allocation and pilot placement on the system performance. Based on the analysis, we provide, along with a channel estimation scheme, the pilot power allocation and placement designs that can optimize the radar and communication performance, respectively. Moreover, the tradeoff between radar and communication performance is discussed and a tradeoff design is presented. We conduct simulations to validate our analysis and evaluate the proposed designs. In the existing millimeter-wave (mmWave) wireless positioning systems, the method based on sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) uses the channel sparsity to estimate the parameters required for positioning, such as angle of arrival (AOA) and time delay, but most existing SBL solutions only consider the angle sparsity. In this paper, we consider the joint sparsity of the angle domain and time delay domain to propose an improved SBL algorithm by using a new two-dimensional adaptive grid refinement method in the SBL framework. This algorithm solves the grid mismatch problem caused by the fixed grid in the traditional SBL method, and reduces the algorithm complexity of the off-grid SBL (OGSBL) algorithm. We also obtain the Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) of AOA, time delay and position estimation based on the mmWave multipath signals to analyze the estimation errors. In this paper, we propose an iterative generalized eigenvector (GE) precoder design for three dimensional (3D) massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) downlink with uniform planar array (UPA) and imperfect channel state information (CSI). We use a posterior beam based statistical channel model which includes the channel aging and the spatial correlation. We consider the problem of maximizing the expected sum-rate under a total power constraint. By replacing the expected sum-rate with their deterministic equivalents, we obtain the structure of the optimal linear precoders. The columns of the optimal precoding matrices are the generalized eigen-vectors of two matrices. One of the two matrices is related to the transmitted signal of the intended user, and the other is related to the power constraint and the leakage to other users. Furthermore, the two matrices are also functions of the precoders, thus iterative updates of the precoder are needed. Then, we investigate the power allocation and the computation of the Lagrangian multiplier, and propose an iterative algorithm based on the structure of the optimal precoders. Simulation results show that the proposed precoders can achieve significantly performance gain than the widely used regularized zero forcing (RZF) precoder and signal to leakage plus noise ratio (SLNR) precoder. Multiple remote antenna units (RAUs) cooperate to serve a certain user in cell-free distributed massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Due to the different distances between each RAU and the user, asynchronous reception effects will occur. This paper studies the impacts of asynchronous reception effects on cell-free distributed massive MIMO systems. We first derive the minimum-mean-square error (MMSE) channel estimation under the asynchronous reception effects. Given the estimated channel state information, we derive the closed-form expressions of the user achievable rates with maximum ratio transmission (MRT) and regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoders, which are further used to analyze the impacts of asynchronous reception effects. The accuracy of the closed-form expressions are verified. Simulation results demonstrate that asynchronous reception effects cause a non-negligible drop on the system spectral efficiency. Moreover, the performance degradation is proportional to the subcarrier sequence number and even more serious with the increasing of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) or the number of antennas per RAU. Nowadays, adaptive filters in complex domain have received increasing attention since they can be applied to a wider scenario than real valued cases. As two typical information theoretic criteria, the minimum complex kernel risk-sensitive loss (MCKRSL) and maximum complex correntropy criterion (MCCC) have shown robustness to non-Gaussian noises in complex domain adaptive filtering. However, since both criteria cannot consider the probability distribution of error, they are not optimal in the presence of some non-Gaussian noises. This paper firstly defines a complex Shannon entropy in terms of the probability distribution of error. Then, a novel adaptive filter is proposed using the minimum complex Shannon entropy (MCSE) criterion. More significantly, the convergence behavior of the MCSE algorithm is discussed, and thus the steady-state excess mean square error (EMSE) is calculated for theoretical analysis. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has become an appealing solution for a wide range of commercial and civilian applications thanks to its high mobility and flexible deployment. Due to the continuous UAV navigation, the channels between UAV based arial base station (BS) and the ground users are subject to the Doppler effect. Meanwhile, when UAV is equipped with massive number of antennas in high frequency band such as mmWave and Tera Hertz (THz), the non-negligible propagation delay across the array aperture would cause beam squint effect. In this paper, we first investigate the channel under both Doppler effect and beam squint effect for UAV communications with large antenna array and high frequency band. Then, we design a gridless compressed sensing (GCS) based channel tracking method, where the high dimension uplink channel can be derived by estimating a few physical parameters such as the direction of arrival (DOA), Doppler shift, and the complex gain information. Besides, with the Doppler shift reciprocity and angular reciprocity, the downlink channel can be derived by only one pilot symbol, which greatly decreases the downlink channel training overhead. The ease of acquiring hardware-based link quality indicators (LQIs) is an alluring property for fast channel estimation in time- and safety-critical wireless sensor network (WSN) applications, such as closed-loop control and interlocking. The two rudimentary hardware-based channel quality metrics, i.e., received signal strength (RSS) and LQI, are the key constituents of channel estimation and a plethora of other WSN functionalities, from routing to transmit power control. Nevertheless, this paper highlights three deficient aspects of these two indicators: 1) Overall deceptiveness, i.e., the inability to reveal the presence of interference, falsely indicating excellent channel conditions in an unacceptably high fraction of cases; 2) the burstiness of missed detection which compromises the attempts to eliminate the deceptiveness by averaging; and 3) high mutual discrepancy of the two indicators, which is observed in 39%–73% of packets, throughout different scenarios. The ability of RSS and LQI to indicate IEEE 802.11 interference is scrutinized in a variety of scenarios in typical industrial environments using commercial-off-the-shelf hardware and realistic network topologies, giving the findings of this paper high general validity and practical relevance. This paper investigates the capacity of radio channels when iterative channel estimation, data detection, and decoding are employed. Knowing the capacity gain from iterative detection versus purely pilot-based channel estimation helps a designer compare the performance of an iterative receiver against a noniterative receiver and select the best balance between performance and cost. A bound is put on the linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) channel estimation error, based on which a bound on the capacity is obtained. The attainable capacity is related to the channel estimation error of the receiver. The bounds take into account the uncertainty in symbol detection on channel estimation and incorporate the effect of channel estimation error on channel capacity. The interaction between the symbol detector and the decoder is analytically characterized and depicted in an extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart, where a bound on the detector curve is found. With optimal LMMSE pilot-based channel estimation, the results of this paper demonstrate that iterative channel estimation provides insignificant capacity advantage at fading rates below 1% of the symbol rate, although a computational-cost gain is still available. Cooperative hybrid automatic retransmission request (C-HARQ) is a simple and effective method for wireless communication. Since its performance largely depends on the selection of a relevant relay, the design of an appropriate relay selection scheme is very important. Although various works have been performed on this topic, most of them did not take into account both the “not memoryless” and multiple retransmission characteristics of C-HARQ, resulting in the loss of achievable performance. In this paper, we propose a novel cooperative relay selection scheme in a distributed manner called transmission number relaying (TNR) to simultaneously reduce the outage probability and increase the energy efficiency by utilizing the features of C-HARQ. The TNR scheme determines a single relay based on the estimated number of transmissions, which is calculated from the channel condition. Using these numbers instead of just the channel condition improves the outage probability and reduces the total consumed energy. The exact probability of the number of transmissions at each relay and the outage probability are analyzed, and the numerical results show that the proposed scheme significantly improves the outage probability and reduces the total consumed energy. In this paper, a new unsupervised carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation method is proposed for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems using constant modulus constellations. Under the assumption that the channel variation is slow within two adjacent OFDM symbols, the influence of the channel on corresponding subcarriers of the two OFDM symbols will be the same. Utilizing this feature, a robust cost function is formulated based on covariance fitting criterion between two nearby OFDM symbols, and the CFO is estimated by minimizing this objective function. The mean square error (MSE) and bit error rate (BER) performance of the proposed covariance-fitting-based CFO estimation method is compared with that of the prominent conventional estimation schemes under noisy multipath channels with high delay spreads and Doppler spreads. The effect of channel length on the performance of the proposed estimator is also investigated. This paper investigates a channel-coded multiuser system operated with orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) and interleaved-division multiple access (IDMA). In general, there are many variations to multiuser systems. Our choice of the combination of OFDM and IDMA is motivated by its ability to achieve multiuser diversity gain in frequency-selective multiple-access channels. To realize OFDM-IDMA, however, two challenges must be addressed. The first challenge is the estimation of multiple channel parameters, particularly how to contain the estimation errors of the channel parameters of the multiple users, considering that the overall estimation errors may increase with the number of users because the estimations of their channel parameters are intertwined with each other. The second challenge is that the transmitters of the multiple users may be driven by different radio-frequency oscillators. The associated frequency asynchrony may cause multiple carrier frequency offsets (CFOs) at the receiver. Compared with a single-user receiver where the single CFO can be compensated away at the receiver prior to channel decoding, a particular difficulty for a multiuser receiver is that it is not possible to compensate away all the multiple CFOs simultaneously. To tackle the two challenges, we put forth an integrated framework to solve the problems of multiuser channel-parameter estimation, CFO compensation, and channel decoding jointly and iteratively. The framework employs the space-alternating generalized expectation-maximization (SAGE) algorithm to decompose the multiuser problem into multiple single-user problems and the expectation-conditional maximization (ECM) algorithm to tackle each of the single-user subproblems. Iterative executions of SAGE and ECM in the framework allow the two aforementioned challenges to be tackled in an optimal manner. Due to the high flight speed of the aircraft and long range to access the ground station (GS), the channel state information (CSI) is not accurately obtained by direct feedback from the receiver to the transmitter. This makes it difficult to achieve stable transmission when the feedback codebook selection scheme is directly employed in the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) for the air-to-ground (A/G) communications. Therefore, in this paper, a stable transmission scheme for the A/G MIMO transmission is proposed to handle these issues. Two contributions are proposed: 1) an open-loop calibrated channel estimation scheme based on navigation filtering to offer a more accurate CSI estimation; and 2) an adaptive precoding scheme based on the correlation coefficient for stable transmission. The simulations confirm the validity and efficiency of the proposed schemes. Multiple-input–multiple-output orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) receivers with an electronically steerable passive array radiator (ESPAR) antenna can improve bit error rate (BER) performance and obtain additional diversity gain without increasing the number of radio-frequency (RF) front-end circuits. In this scheme, a minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) channel estimator is employed for obtaining the channel state information. However, its drawbacks include insufficient estimation accuracy and high computational complexity due to the inverse matrix calculation. In this paper, we propose using a low-complexity compressed-sensing-based channel estimation for the MIMO-OFDM receiver with an ESPAR antenna. We also propose a low-complexity detection scheme to further reduce the computational cost required for the detection. The simulation results show that with using the proposed channel estimation method, the BER performance is improved, while its complexity is reduced. In this paper, we consider nonregenerative multipair two-way relaying systems, where a relay node supports $K$ pairs of two-way communications in the presence of imperfect channel state information (CSI). We employ a stochastic approach to model the channel uncertainties and study a robust beamforming design at the relay. It is shown that the proposed beamformer provides a reduction in the computational complexity, as well as good robustness against channel errors, compared with conventional designs. To reduce the estimation overhead at the users, we also suggest an efficient downlink training method to inform the users of the channel-dependent self-interference cancellation (SIC) parameters. With the training method, the additive noise may incur a malfunction of the SIC. To address this issue, we develop an intelligent selection criterion that decides whether the SIC should be adopted or not. This paper considers optimal joint time, frequency, and power allocation for energy-efficient device-to-device (D2D) communications in an overlay cellular network, where multiple D2D transmitters communicate with their corresponding D2D receivers while utilizing the energy harvested from a cellular base station (BS). Due to channel estimation error and feedback delays, the channel state information (CSI) available at the transmitters is usually imperfect, which can significantly deteriorate the energy efficiency (EE) of the considered system. To mitigate the impact of imperfect CSI, we formulate a non-convex robust optimization problem for the maximization of the EE (in bits/Joule) of the system while ensuring quality of service (QoS) requirements on the minimum data rata and the minimum amount of harvested energy for cellular and D2D users, respectively. We reveal that the optimal energy-efficient D2D transmission should exhaust all the harvested energy of each D2D transmitter. Exploiting this fact, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm for obtaining the optimal solution. To strike a balance between performance and computational complexity, we further propose a low-complexity suboptimal algorithm. Simulation results show that compared with several baseline schemes, both the proposed optimal and suboptimal algorithms can significantly improve the EE of wireless-powered D2D communications under imperfect CSI. Hybrid precoding is used in millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems instead of full digital precoding to reduce the cost and power consumption. Conventional hybrid precoding however requires complex channel estimation before beamforming. In this paper, we propose a low complexity low-cost channel estimation-free deep direct beamforming method composed of two basic steps-beam impulse and beamforming for time division duplex (TDD). This method is built upon randomized singular value decomposition (RSVD) and can directly complete the process of beamforming. Furthermore, a realistic dataset of mmWave channel-DeepMIMO is adopted to evaluate and determine the practicability of this method. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed deep direct beamforming achieves high performance while its complexity and power consumption are very low. Compared with other methods without perfect channel status information (CSI), the proposed method costs less and requires lower computational resources while achieves higher spectral efficiency. To support the massive machine-type communications (mMTC) scenario for Internet of Things (IoTs) applications featured by large-scale device connectivity and low device activity, grant-free non-orthogonal multiple access (GF-NOMA) and compressive sensing (CS)-based multi-user detection methods (MUD) are developed. In this paper, we develop two Bayesian CS-based methods, i.e., sparse Bayesian Learning (SBL) and fast inverse-free sparse Bayesian Learning (FI-SBL), for joint MUD and channel estimation (CE) in GF-NOMA with Low-Activity Code Division Multiple Access (LA-CDMA) as the multiple access technology. SBL is investigated for robust MUD and CE by utilizing the parameterized Gaussian prior information. Then to resolve the high computational complexity of SBL, FI-SBL is proposed, which replaces matrix reversion operations with relaxed evidence lower bound. This paper presents a family of training preambles for offset quadratic-amplitude modulation based filter-bank multi-carrier (FBMC) modulations with low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) property. We propose to use binary Golay sequences as FBMC preambles and analyze the maximum PAPR for different numbers of zero guard symbols. For both the PHYDYAS and Hermite prototype filters with overlapping factor of 4, as an illustration of the proposed preambles, we show that a preamble PAPR less than 3 dB can be achieved with probability of one, when three or more zero guard symbols are inserted in the vicinity of each preamble. In future 5G user-centric ultra-dense networks (UUDN), demands of high data rate and high spectrum efficiency are effectively met by dual connectivity (DC) technology. However, due to huge increase of base stations (BSs) and mobile users (MUs), it becomes difficult for BSs to quickly and precisely select the codeword and provide DC to MUs. Hence, different from some traditional methods, this correspondence paper aims to improve the network performance using the method of machine learning. First, we model the random distribution of BSs by homogeneous Poisson point processes, where each MU is served by millimeter-wave channel. Second, the probabilities that macro cell BS or small cell BS serves the MU are further derived to get the average sum rate (ASR) in UUDN. Third, inspired by ML, we utilize an iterative support vector machine (SVM) classifier to select the codewords of BSs, with sequential minimal optimization (SMO) algorithm used for training all link samples in UUDN. Then, an iterative SVM-SMO classification algorithm is proposed to achieve a highly efficient performance of DC, where the convergence and complexity are also discussed. The sample training and simulation at last are evaluated by Google TensorFlow. The simulation verified that our proposed algorithm gets a higher ASR than the traditional channel estimation based algorithm. Channel interpolation is an essential technique for providing high-accuracy estimation of the channel state information for wireless systems design where the frequency-space structural correlations of multi-antenna channel are typically hidden in matrix or tensor forms. In this correspondence paper, a modified extreme learning machine (ELM) that can process tensorial data, or ELM model with tensorial inputs (TELM), is proposed to handle the channel interpolation task. The TELM inherits many good properties from ELMs. Based on the TELM, the Tucker decomposed extreme learning machine is proposed for further improving the performance. Furthermore, we establish a theoretical argument to measure the interpolation capability of the proposed learning machines. Experimental results verify that our proposed learning machines can achieve comparable mean squared error (MSE) performance against the traditional ELMs but with 15% shorter running time, and outperform the other methods for a 20% margin measured in MSE for channel interpolation. This paper proposes a robust beamforming (BF) scheme to enhance the physical layer security (PLS) of a multibeam satellite system operating at Ka band. By considering the effects of beam gain, path loss, and rain attenuation, we first formulate a constrained optimization problem to maximize the minimal achievable secrecy rate of multiuser under the assumption of imperfect eavesdropping channel and the constraint of total transmit power on the satellite. Since the problem is non-convex and mathematically intractable, we exploit the sequential convex approximation approach and S-procedure method to transform the original problem into one with a series of linear matrix inequality and second-order cone constraints, and then propose an iterative scheme to obtain the optimal BF weight vectors.
