This paper studies the secure transmission in a multiuser broadcast channel where only the statistical channel state information of the eavesdropper is available. We propose to apply secret dirty-paper coding (S-DPC) in this scenario to support the secure transmission of one user and the normal (unclassified) transmission of the other users. By adopting the S-DPC and encoding the secret message in the first place, all the information-bearing signals of the normal transmission are treated as noise by potential eavesdroppers and thus provide secrecy for the secure transmission. In this way, the proposed approach exploits the intrinsic secrecy of multiuser broadcasting and can serve as an energy-efficient alternative to the traditional artificial noise (AN) scheme. To evaluate the secrecy performance of this approach and compare it with the AN scheme, we propose two S-DPC-based secure transmission schemes for maximizing the secrecy rate under constraints on the secrecy outage probability (SOP) and the normal transmission rates. The first scheme directly optimizes the covariance matrices of the transmit signals, and a novel approximation of the intractable SOP constraint is derived to facilitate the optimization. The second scheme combines zero-forcing dirty-paper coding and AN, and the optimization involves only power allocation. We establish efficient numerical algorithms to solve the optimization problems for both schemes. Theoretical and simulation results confirm that, in addition to supporting the normal transmission, the achievable secrecy rates of the proposed schemes can be close to that of the traditional AN scheme, which supports only the secure transmission of one user. This paper considers the downlink of a cognitive radio (CR) network formed by multiple primary and secondary transmitters, where each multiantenna transmitter serves a preknown set of single-antenna users. This paper assumes that the secondary and primary transmitters can simultaneously transmit their data over the same frequency bands to achieve high system spectrum efficiency. This paper considers the downlink balancing problem of maximizing the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of the secondary transmitters subject to both the total power constraint of the secondary transmitters and the maximum interference constraint at each primary user due to secondary transmissions. This paper proposes solving the problem using the alternating direction method of multipliers, which leads to a distributed implementation through limited information exchange across the coupled secondary transmitters. This paper additionally proposes a solution that guarantees feasibility at each iteration. The explosive growth of Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications such as smart cities and Industry 4.0 have led to drastic increase in demand for wireless bandwidth, hence motivating the rapid development of new techniques for enhancing spectrum utilization needed by new generation wireless communication technologies. Among others, dynamic spectrum access (DSA) is one of the most widely accepted approaches. In this paper, as an enhancement of existing works, we take into consideration of inter-node collaborations in a dynamic spectrum environment. Typically, in such distributed circumstances, intelligent dynamic spectrum access almost invariably relies on self-learning to achieve dynamic spectrum access improvement. Whereas, this paper proposes a DSA scheme based on deep reinforcement learning to enhance spectrum and access efficiency. Unlike traditional Q-learning-based DSA, we introduce the following to enhance the spectrum efficiency in dynamic IoT spectrum environments. First, deep double Q-learning is adopted to perform local self-spectrum-learning for IoT terminals in order to achieve better dynamic access accuracy. Second, to accelerate learning convergence, federated learning (FL) in edge nodes is used to improve the self-learning. Third, multiple secondary users, who do not interfere with each other and have similar operation condition, are clustered for federated learning to enhance the efficiency of deep reinforcement learning. Comparing with the traditional distributed DSA with deep learning, the proposed scheme has faster access convergence speed due to the characteristic of global optimization for federated learning. Based on this, a framework of federated deep reinforcement learning (FDRL) for DSA is proposed. Furthermore, this scheme preserves privacy of IoT users in that FDRL only requires model parameters to be uploaded to edge servers. In concurrent spectrum sharing scenarios between radars and wireless communication systems, one strict approach to protect the radar from undesired interference is locating the base stations outside a guard (or exclusion) zone of the radar. As a result, users inside that zone experience bad communication coverage. This paper uses Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) to improve the base station coverage of users in the radar exclusion zone. The paper shows, through analysis and simulation, that joint optimization of base station and RIS locations improves the probability of coverage in the exclusion zone over the shared spectrum without disturbing the radar operation. Fixed Satellite Services (FSS) used to be alone at the C-Band spectrum in most countries. Since the deployment of 5G in many countries (i.e., 3.3–3.6 GHz), FSS is not the exclusive system in the C-Band anymore. In order to minimize the detrimental interference for the FSS to allowable levels, regional exclusion zones of maximum radiated power in 5G base stations (BS) are proposed and evaluated. In this paper, a measurement campaign has been carried out, and an analysis of the interference has been studied. A filtering model, namely Filter to Remove Broadband Interference 5G (FIREBRING), is proposed and analyzed concerning the carrier-to-noise ratio (C/N). Moreover, this paper focuses on the evaluation of the 5G interference into the FSS. The proposed solution deployed an Low-Noise Block (LNB) with a band frequency of 3.7 to 4.2 GHz to test the satellite down-conversion signal at the receiver. The paper offered a complete analysis of the 5G signal, taking into account the implications of out-of-band emissions, potentially LNB saturation into FSS receiver, and the repercussions of the deployment of the 5G BS active antenna systems. In this paper, we explore the different per-user bandwidths available for each tier of heterogeneous networks (HetNets) and the corresponding downlink range expansion (RE, a key measure to boost small cell association). Based on the practical case of tier-specific path loss exponents, we derive the local delay of HetNets under the random discontinuous transmission scheme (DTX, employed to manage the interference and reduce energy consumption). Using such a new expression for local delay, we then analyze the corresponding energy efficiency (EE). These delay and EE expressions reveal that there exists an optimal value for both the RE bias factor and for the DTX mute probability. The heterogeneous fog radio access networks (Fog-RAN), the integration of fog computing, and traditional heterogeneous radio access networks can be implemented through the next-generation wireless communication networks. However, most of the solutions are limited to the spectrum efficiency optimization, and cross-tier interference existing in the fog access points (F-APs) could affect the network performance seriously. In this paper, the user association, resource allocation (including bandwidth and power), and caching deployment are investigated in the heterogeneous Fog-RAN to consider energy efficiency and cross-tier interference mitigation. Specifically, the user association, resource allocation, and caching strategy are formulated as a non-convex optimization problem and then transformed into a convex problem, which can be solved by a proposed algorithm based on the concept of the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). Then an ADMM-based algorithm is proposed to enhance the energy efficiency of the Fog-RAN. Carrier sense multiple access with collision notification (CSMA/CN) is a typical representation of physical-layer (PHY)/medium access control (MAC) co-designs, where the MAC control frames are implemented or detected using PHY techniques. With CSMA/CN, the sender detects an unsuccessful transmission, with the aid of a collision notification (CN) from the receiver. In this paper, we first theoretically study the crucial impact of the CN attributes (namely, the detection threshold and the length) on system throughput in a wireless local area network (WLAN). We identify that the false-alarm probability of CN (more generally, the control frames in PHY/MAC co-designs) is a dominating metric that influences system performance. This paper will help developers select optimal CN attributes to balance various factors influencing CN detection performance. In this paper, the scaling law of the network throughput of a special type of heterogeneous networks is studied, where a secondary network composed of cognitive users shares the same resources opportunistically with a primary network of licensed users. Some pioneering works in this area showed that this type of heterogeneous networks performs as well as two stand-alone networks under the dense network model. A key assumption behind this conclusion is that the density of the secondary network is higher than that of the primary network in the order sense, which essentially decouples the two overlaid networks as the secondary network dominates asymptotically. In this paper, we endeavor to investigate this problem with a weaker condition that the dimensions of the two overlaid networks are on the same order, under the extended network model. Our analysis shows that, with the ratio of the two network sizes larger than a threshold, this weaker (and arguably more practical) condition does not degrade either network throughput scaling. This paper investigates low-complexity joint interference avoidance and desired link improvement for single-channel allocation in multiuser multiantenna access points (APs) for open-access small cells. It is considered that an active user is equipped with an antenna array that can be used to suppress interference sources but not to provide spatial diversity. On the other hand, the operation of APs can be coordinated to meet design requirements, where each of which can unconditionally utilize assigned physical channels. Moreover, each AP is equipped with uncorrelated antennas that can be reused simultaneously to serve many active users. The analysis provides new approaches to exploit physical channels, transmit antennas, and APs to mitigate interference, while providing the best possible link gain to an active user through the most suitable interference-free channel. The event of concurrent service requests placed by active users on a specific interference-free channel is discussed for either interference avoidance through identifying unshared channels or desired link improvement via multiuser scheduling. The applicability of the approaches to balance downlink loads is explained, and practical scenarios due to imperfect identification of interference-free channels and/or the scheduled user are thoroughly investigated. The developed results are applicable for any statistical and geometric models of the allocated channel to an active user, as well as channel conditions of interference users. This paper studies the performance of two traditional schedulers, namely, proportional fair (PF) and round robin (RR), in the context of relay-enhanced Long-Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A) networks. These two schedulers are natural candidates for implementation in relay nodes (RNs), and following the results obtained in single-hop networks, mobile operators could be tempted to adopt PF because of the good tradeoff it offers between cell capacity and fairness. Based on a statistical throughput evaluation model, we show that this is not necessarily the right option. The number of RNs, their locations in the cell, and backhaul link quality have a decisive influence on scheduler choice. In some scenarios, it is even not desirable to deploy relays as they degrade the network performance compared with the no-relay case. For the purpose of performance evaluation, we develop a realistic and computationally tractable statistical network model that takes into account fast fading, multiple interferers, cell range expansion bias, backhaul link quality, and traffic load. The downlink power allocation in a two-tier cellular network that consists of a macrocell network underlaid by multiple femtocell networks is addressed in this paper. This paper aims to maximize the transmission capacity of the femtocell networks while guaranteeing that the interference experienced at the macro base station does not exceed an interference constraint. We formulate a Bayesian Stackelberg game to model and analyze behaviors of macrocell and femtocell base stations (MBS and FBSs, respectively). In this game, the MBS is the leader, whereas the FBSs are the followers. The channel information between an FBS and its associated femtocell user is private information and is considered the type of the follower. The leader issues the price of interference charged to the followers first to maximize its own profit. Based on the price, the followers decide the strategies to maximize their payoffs defined as the difference between the transmission capacity and the cost of interference (CoI) paid to the leader. Using backward induction, we first analyze the follower game. The existence and uniqueness of the Bayesian Nash equilibrium (BNE) are examined, and the methods to obtain the BNE for a symmetric case are provided. Then, the leader game is analyzed. This paper deals with the problem of efficient resource allocation in dynamic infrastructureless wireless networks. In a reactive interference-limited scenario, at each transmission trial, every transmitter selects a frequency channel from some common pool, together with a power level. As a result, for all transmitters, not only the fading gain, but the number and the power of interfering transmissions as well, vary over time. Due to the absence of a central controller and time varying network characteristics, it is highly inefficient for transmitters to acquire the global channel and network knowledge. Therefore, given no information, each transmitter selfishly intends to maximize its average reward, which is a function of the channel quality, as well as the joint selection profile of all transmitters. This scenario is modeled as an adversarial multiplayer multiarmed bandit game, where players attempt to minimize their so-called regret, while, at the network side, achieving equilibrium in some sense. Based on this model and to solve the resource allocation problem, in this paper, we develop two joint power level and channel selection strategies. We prove that the gap between the average rewards achieved by our approaches and that based on the best fixed strategy converges to zero asymptotically. The next generation of mobile communication has progressed toward the deployment of small cells to meet the growing demands of increased capacity and QoS as compared to the conventional method, where all the computations were performed by the base station (BS)'s only. To reduce burden at the BS side, small cells deployment has been stressed upon, thus resulting in the formation of ultradense networks (UDN) having high concentration of small cells (e.g., picocell, femtocell, hotspots) and as a counter effect of which distance between two small cells is reduced to a greater extent. With such a close association of cells in UDN, the probability of frequent handovers also increases abruptly. As a result, the chances for attacker to spoof the bandwidth also increases many folds. In this paper, we have analyzed SNR, signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio, and channel quality information channel parameters, such that the position of moving users at which handover is initiated in picocell deployment of UDN can be traced out successfully or region where the probability of attackers presence is high. Interference alignment (IA) is a precoding technique that aligns interfering signals at receivers. It is known that IA achieves the maximum degrees of freedom over an interference channel under ideal assumptions. The real-world performance of IA depends on a range of practical issues, such as imperfect synchronization, channel estimation, and feedback. Practical issues have been studied in simulations and prototypes, but fully distributed operation of IA network nodes has not been considered. In this paper, we present the first investigation of real-time IA performance on a fully distributed 2 $\times$ 2 multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) prototype system with three physically independent user pairs. Over-the-air algorithms for time and frequency synchronization, as well as analog feedback, are studied and implemented. Sum rates are illustrated as a function of complexity and accuracy of different alignment, synchronization, and feedback algorithms. Corresponding tradeoffs are evaluated using an iterative IA method, the injection of residual frequency offset into synchronization, and analog versus quantization-based limited feedback approaches. We demonstrate that, while considering all possible error sources in estimation, synchronization, and feedback, the theoretical multiplexing gain of IA can be reached in practical systems with a constant sum rate loss that remains within 5 bits/Hz/s compared with an ideal simulation. In this paper, we propose a green spectrum and infrastructure leasing framework for sharing unused TV spectrum, in which the ownership of the network infrastructure and spectrum are decoupled, and each can be leased as a service on demand. An incumbent TV spectrum owner (TSO) can lease a share of the infrastructure from a network infrastructure owner (NIO) with a pay-per-use model, to provide new services to its end users. On the other hand, a TSO can rent a portion of its unused spectrum to the NIO for revenue such that the NIO can obtain access to the spectrum to serve its customers. This proposed framework achieves green communications through both resource sharing and energy saving. Our paper aims to analyze the interplay between TSO and NIO, and create a win–win situation to provide sufficient incentives for them to cooperate on this green communications. A multistage Stackelberg game is formulated, where TSO and NIO sequentially determine the total bandwidth supply for sharing, the infrastructure leasing price, the amount of infrastructure to lease, the spectrum leasing price, and the amount of spectrum to lease to maximize their utilities. The best strategies that will be taken by the TSO and NIO under various deployment scenarios are analyzed. Evaluation results show that the proposed green spectrum and infrastructure leasing framework is a promising scheme under which both TSO and NIO can benefit, and their utilities can be maximized in terms of user data throughput and revenue/payment, which provides sufficient incentives for them to cooperate. In this paper, a new mathematical approach for the analysis and optimization of cellular-enabled low-energy mobile devices with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer capabilities is introduced. The proposed methodology relies on modeling the locations of the base stations as points of a spatial Poisson point process, and it leverages stochastic geometry for system-level analysis. The tradeoffs emerging from simultaneous wireless information and power transfer transmission are characterized through the concept of “feasibility regions” and are quantified through the joint cumulative distribution function of harvested power and rate. To gain insight on the achievable performance, in addition, an upper bound is proposed, and its accuracy is discussed. The system model encompasses a realistic channel model that accounts for line-of-sight (LOS) and non-LOS (NLOS) links, different cell association criteria, practical receivers based on time switching and power splitting schemes, and directional beamforming. The analysis shows that optimal values for the time switching and power splitting ratios exist and that directional beamforming and network densification are capable of enhancing system performance. More specifically, high directional antennas lead cellular networks to operate in the noise-limited regime, which is proved to provide optimal performance, and because of the existence of LOS and NLOS links, an optimal deployment density for the base stations is proven to exist for typical system setups. Wireless network virtualization is a promising technique for future wireless networks. In this paper, different from traditional virtualization approaches by means of resource isolation at the subchannel or time-slot level, we propose a novel framework of heterogeneous cellular network virtualization combined with interference alignment (IA) technology, which utilizes IA to cancel the mutual interference, by aligning the interference from other transmitters into a lower dimensional subspace at each receiver. In this framework, we formulate the virtual resource allocation as a joint virtualization and IA problem, considering the gain not only from interference mitigation introduced by IA but from the sum-rate improvement brought by virtualization as well. In addition, to reduce the computational complexity, with the recent advances in discrete stochastic approximation (DSA), we propose a two-step algorithm to solve the formulated problem. The basic principle is to design IA schemes for each feasible association combination and then to traverse the association space to search for the optimal association combination with the maximum sum rate. To efficiently trade off system sum rate and link fairness, power allocation in wireless spectrum-sharing networks often concentrates upon proportional fairness. The corresponding problem has been proved to be convex for a single tone but NP-hard for more than two tones. However, in the two-tone case, the complexity of the problem for achieving proportional fairness has not been addressed yet. In this paper, we prove that the issue of proportional-fairness optimization for the two-tone situation is NP-hard by reducing the problem of finding the maximum independent set in an undirected graph to it. Moreover, a computationally efficient algorithm is proposed to provide an efficient suboptimal solution. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of our proposal. In this paper, secure communication aided by a multiantenna cooperative jammer is investigated. Under very practical but adverse assumptions, i.e., no instantaneous jammer–eavesdropper channel state information (CSI) and imperfect instantaneous jammer–receiver CSI, the residual interference from the jammer to the legitimate receiver appears, even with spatial beamforming. Then, this paper analyzes the impact of imperfect CSI on the function of cooperative jamming and derives closed-form expressions of multiple secrecy performance metrics, including ergodic secrecy rate, secrecy outage capacity, and interception probability. Interestingly, it is found that two antennas at the jammer is always optimal. Furthermore, some insights are obtained through asymptotic analysis, e.g., the secrecy performance is saturated as the source transmit power increases, the ergodic secrecy rate is a linear function of CSI feedback bits in the region of high transmit power at the source/jammer, and interception probability is independent of transmit power at the source and is a decreasing function of transmit power at the jammer. This paper studies the cooperative device-to-device (D2D) transmissions in cellular networks, where two D2D users communicate bidirectionally with each other and simultaneously serve as relays to assist the two-way transmissions between two cellular users. For this scenario, both cellular and D2D links share the same spectrum, thus creating mutual interference. In addition to that, a security problem also exists since the cellular users want to keep their messages secret from the D2D users and vice versa. To address these two issues, a security-embedded interference avoidance scheme is proposed in this paper. By exploiting the constellation rotation technique, the proposed scheme can create interference-free links for both D2D and cellular communications, thereby significantly improving the system error performance. Moreover, our scheme also provides an inherent secrecy protection at the physical layer, which makes the information exchange between cellular users and that between D2D users confidential from each other. Complex building structures constrain indoor wireless communications. The significant dependence between the indoor wireless network performance and the building structures can be considered as an intrinsic property of a building, which means that the building has to be designed to achieve desirable indoor wireless network performance. The power gain (PG) and the interference gain (IG) have been defined as the figures of merit (FoMs) to evaluate the wireless performance of a building. Employing open space as the benchmark, the PG and the IG respectively quantify the effective change of the intended signal power and the undesired power, i.e., the interference and thermal noise power, received in a targeted user equipment (UE) location due to the presence of the building. In this paper, a tractable approach is proposed to obtain the PG and the IG with a partition-based path gain model. It enables the PG and the IG to capture the impact of both building materials and the building layout on indoor wireless network performance. Numerical results show that the analytical models in closed-form expressions facilitate the wireless performance assessment to a given building computational-efficiently. In this paper, an antenna synthesis process is investigated for Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) application. The wireless communication between Road Side Units (RSUs) and On Board Units (OBUs) located in the vehicles enables smart mobility. However, to support high speed vehicles and high data rates, a wider coverage area by the RSU antennas projected on the highway is required. This is defined by the radiation patterns of the RSU antennas. On a multi-lane highway, interference from the adjacent lanes is a critical issue which determines the communication reliability in terms of Single-to-Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR). Hence, in this paper, an interference-aware antenna synthesis process is proposed and a planar array is optimized based on the objective function of obtaining a wide coverage area in terms of SINR distribution for a given modulation scheme. The proposed antenna array enhances the reliable communication area and provides improved SINR distribution across the lane for misaligned vehicles from the center of the lane. Next-generation heterogeneous cellular network (HCN) expects more and more deployment of the base stations and spectrum to achieve data rate in gigabits per second with seamless connectivity. Recently, small cell deployment has proven its effectiveness for increasing the coverage and area spectral efficiency (ASE) of the cellular network. Although, dense small cell deployment also increases the deployment cost and cross-tier interference of the network. This paper suggests switching-based mixed millimeter wave (mmW)/ultra high frequency (UHF) cellular network as a possible solution to overcome these challenges. In mixed mmW/UHF cellular network (named as MMUCN), mmW is used as the main transmission link, and UHF band is utilized as a backup link. In this paper, a theoretical framework is developed using tools from the stochastic geometry to analyze the outage performance, ASE, and deployment cost efficiency (DCE) of the MMUCN, which comprises existing macro base stations and mmW base stations. Optimal mmW base station densities constraints by the outage are calculated, which maximizes the ASE and DCE. Furthermore, a multiobjective optimization problem is formulated to maximize ASE and DCE simultaneously. In this paper, a general two-way relay (TWR) transmission method is proposed under per-antenna power constraints by combining space-time line codes (STLCs) with transmit power allocation for two source nodes. We introduce a general STLC-based encoding scheme for a decode-and-forward TWR and derive the detection signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) values at two source nodes. An optimal encoder structure with power allocation is proposed in terms of maximizing the minimum SINRs, and it is verified that the optimal encoder is identical to the superposition of two conventional STLCs. An iterative method is proposed to find the optimal power allocation for detection at two source nodes. Moreover, a low-complexity suboptimal encoder is proposed for practical implementation. Numerical simulations present that the proposed STLC-based transmission method outperforms a conventional eigen-beamforming scheme with nulling and an STLC-based scheme with equal power allocation, in terms of the average bit error rate of source nodes, regardless of the distribution of source nodes, the number of TWR antennas, and the transmit power. Current and future mobile network access technologies increasingly rely on multiantenna transmission techniques and on cell miniaturization to achieve orders-of-magnitude gains in capacity. In this paper, we propose and evaluate the idea of multiuser multiple-input–multiple-input-based (MU-MIMO) cell reassignments. Dense small-cell deployments make it possible to pair user equipment units (UEs), which were originally assigned to different cells, enabling multiuser MIMO (MU-MIMO) and resulting in performance improvements to both UEs. We discuss how such pairings can be accomplished, and we assess the potential gains in the resulting spectral efficiency and MU-MIMO usage. We study multiuser detection for uplink transmissions using only analog beamformers in a millimeter-wave (mm-wave) communication system under a limited scattering environment in this paper. In particular, the successive interference cancelation (SIC)-based detection at a base station (BS) that is equipped with an antenna array is considered with the outputs of analog beamformers. We employ beam selection from a codebook of analog beams for low-complexity analog beamforming in the SIC-based detection and compressive sensing (CS)-based channel estimation that is suitable for the BS that only has analog beamformers. Through simulation results, we can see that the performance of the joint analog beam selection and SIC-based detection is comparable with the performance of the SIC-based detection (with ideal digital beamforming) at the cost of more antenna elements with lower complexity. Densely deployed cellular wireless networks, which employ small cell technology, are being widely implemented. Mitigating the impact of inter- and intracell signal interferences induced by the operations of these networks is a challenging yet essential task. In this paper, we consider adaptive rate scheduling for a transmitting node, regardless of whether it is a base station (BS) or a mobile user. We aim to maximize the system's throughput through the employment of fractional frequency reuse (FFR) schemes. Each BS employs either an omnidirectional or a directional antenna system. We derive the optimal configuration of the FFR scheme and evaluate the ensuing system's performance behavior under absolute and proportional fairness requirements. To maximize the attained throughput by mobiles, we determine the best method to use to classify cell users into interior and edge mobiles. The bandwidth levels allocated for serving interior and edge mobiles are optimized. We derive approximate closed-form mathematical expressions for calculating the probability distributions of the interference signal levels measured at the destined receivers. We account for the impact of the classification process on intercell interference power levels. Under an absolute fairness requirement, we show that optimally configured FFR schemes lead to much enhanced performance. We show that the optimally configured directional-FFR schemes increase the throughput capacity by a factor of about 60% relative to that obtained by using optimal omnidirectional-FFR schemes. The analyses and simulation results presented in this paper serve to characterize the performance behavior attainable by using such small cell deployed cellular wireless network systems when employing the underlying configurations. This paper presents a coherent scheme to optimize an in-band full-duplex multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) relay via beamforming and transmit power allocation in a two-hop single-input–single-output (SISO) link under full channel knowledge and perfect hardware assumptions. First, we derive in closed form the optimal pair of transmit power and receive filter for a fixed transmit filter by unifying the minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) filtering with the SISO-equivalent power allocation, as an iterative approach is not guaranteed to converge to global optimum. Second, we propose a heuristic algorithm to approximate the optimal transmit filter for a fixed receive filter. Furthermore, we study the well-known null-space projection constraint and derive a singular value decomposition (SVD)-based solution for the arbitrary-rank self-interference channel by generalizing the optimal solution under the assumption of rank-1 self-interference channel. Finally, we combine these solutions into a partially iterative algorithm in order to address the global optimization as our observations justify that some of the aforementioned schemes converge to the optimal solution under certain criteria. The numerical analysis of the proposed iterative algorithm demonstrates close-to-optimal performance relative to the theoretical upper bound of the end-to-end link in terms of maximum achievable throughput. In the presence of perfect channel state information (CSI), the achievable degrees of freedom (DoF) in wireless interference networks can be linearly scaled up with the number of users. Achievability is based on the idea of interference alignment (IA). However, in the presence of imperfect CSI, the sum rate becomes degraded, and full DoF may no longer be achievable. In this paper, we propose novel least squares (LS)- and minimum mean square error (MMSE)-based IA schemes that adaptively design beamformers by relying on the availability of imperfect CSI and knowledge of the channel estimation error variance in advance. Interestingly and unlike the other robust algorithms, the proposed adaptive schemes do not impose extra computational complexity compared to their nonadaptive counterparts. It is shown that the LS-based IA is able to outperform interference leakage minimization algorithms under both perfect and imperfect CSI. Furthermore, we compare the performance of the proposed MMSE-based IA with maximum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (Max-SINR) algorithm. We show that while under perfect CSI, the MMSE-based IA achieves the same performance as that of Max-SINR, the former outperforms the latter under CSI mismatch. Providing guaranteed quality of service (QoS) for multimedia applications is a challenging topic in wireless mesh networks (WMNs). This paper proposes a distributed resource reservation (RR) mechanism with novel admission control to guarantee QoS performance of real-time sessions (RTSNs) while improving bandwidth utilization in WMNs. The proposed RR mechanism establishes logical clusters (LCs) for identifying interference relationships between nodes and avoids simultaneous transmissions from interfering nodes. Following the established LCs, a cooperative contention and collision-free channel access is achieved in hybrid medium access control (MAC) for multihop data forwarding in WMNs. To efficiently utilize the scarce resources in a contention-free period, soft and hard resources are reserved for RTSNs according to their QoS demands. This is achieved by a novel admission control algorithm. Furthermore, an analytical model is derived for investigating the RR parameters of the proposed mechanism. Recently, multiple concurrent transmission techniques have been proposed for smartly exploiting interference to improve network throughput. This paper considers zero-forcing (ZF) precoding that allows two interfering links to concurrently transmit under certain situations. This paper focuses on identifying appropriate schedule schemes that efficiently utilize the ZF precoding opportunities to improve network throughput. With this motivation, we define novel link models to formulate our concerned problem. We also develop a distributed scheduling algorithm by using belief propagation. Finally, we conduct extensive simulation experiments to evaluate the efficiency of ZF in improving network throughput in multihop wireless networks. In heterogeneous multi-cell networks (HetNets), inter-and intra-cell interference are critical issues impairing the performance. In this paper, the frequency-hopping (FH) technique based on an attractive FH sequence (FHS) set with two-level Hamming correlations is exploited in such networks. Motivating from the idea of no-and low-hit-zone FHS sets, a construction algorithm of the new FHS set is proposed by utilizing the interleaving technique. Then, the performance metric of such FHS set in terms of Hamming correlation properties are derived, which are verified by an example. Compared with classic FHS sets (patterns), the proposed FHS set offers a zero Hamming cross-correlation for intra-cell users, and a low Hamming cross-correlation for inter-cell users (i.e., multi-level quality-of-services). The large spectral bandwidth at millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies provides a mean to achieve very high data rates in wireless communication systems. A unique characteristic of mmWave is that mmWave links are very sensitive to blockage and have large propagation path loss, which exhibits low line-of-sight (LoS) probability, unstable connectivity and unreliable communication. This paper studies the influence of the blockage in pedestrian scenario, explains in detail how blockage affects the mmWave propagation characteristics. In particular, we study the behavior of the blockage due to human mobility and how it affects the timescale for outage due to blockage using knife-edge diffraction model (KED). One of the existing solutions to overcome the influence of blockage, is to associate the user equipment (UE) with other available base stations (BSs) by handover (HO) if the serving BS is blocked. In this paper, for a pedestrian scenario, we propose two reinforcement learning (RL) based user association algorithms, which accounts for the past experience of the blockage on the position of the UE. One focuses on the reward to increase the sum LoS probability and is named as blockage-aware user association (BAUA). The other focuses on the reward to balance the trade-off between the throughput and the LoS probability and is named as modified BAUA. We compare the proposed algorithm with the conventional user algorithms such as the maximum throughput based algorithm and the maximum SINR based algorithm. Simulation results show that to increase the sum LoS probability BAUA would be suitable, and to increase the average throughput maximum throughput based method would be suitable. From the perspective of statistical performance, this correspondence presents an analytical framework to study the interference coordination schemes in two-tier networks with closed-access small-cell base stations (SBSs). We assume the SBSs adopt the combination of power control, access control, and coordinated beamforming to suppress the intertier interference to the macro users (MUEs). Using stochastic geometry, we derive the expressions for the average data rate of users in different tiers. Based on the analytical results, we discuss the optimal transmission schemes of SBSs to maximize the average data rate of small-cell users while guaranteeing the performance of the MUEs. In this paper, the tradeoff between energy efficiency and spectral efficiency in multicell heterogeneous networks is investigated. Our objective is to maximize both energy efficiency and spectral efficiency of the network, while satisfying the minimum rate requirements of the users. We define our objective function as the weighted summation of energy efficiency and spectral efficiency functions. The fractional frequency reuse (FFR) scheme is employed to suppress intercell interference. We formulate the problem as cell-center boundary selection for FFR, frequency assignment to users, and power allocation. The optimal solution of this problem requires exhaustive search over all cell-center radii, frequency assignments, and power levels. We propose a three-stage algorithm and apply it consecutively until convergence. First, we select the cell-center radius for the FFR method. Second, we assign the frequency resources to users to satisfy their rate requirements and also maximize the objective function. Third, we solve the power allocation subproblem by using the Levenberg–Marquardt method. Minimum rate requirements of users are also included in the solution by using dual decomposition techniques. Our numerical results show a Pareto-optimal solution for energy efficiency and spectral efficiency. We present energy efficiency, spectral efficiency, outage probability, and average transmit power results for different minimum rate constraints. Among other results, we show that, in a particular setting, \text13\% energy efficiency increase can be obtained in a multicell heterogeneous wireless network by sacrificing \text7\% spectral efficiency. The main focus of this paper is on multistream multiantenna (multiple-input multiple-output) communications in large-scale heterogeneous random networks. Previous work in this area mainly studies the outage probability from the perspective of a given stream, which is inaccurate as it generally overlooks possible interference-driven cross stream signal-to-interference correlation in each communication link. To tackle this issue, in this paper, we focus on a link-level performance evaluation by characterizing the complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF) of random mutual information (RMI) under heterogeneous interference. We focus on the scenarios that no coordination among transmitters is persuaded, and the receivers do not attempt to cancel out part of interuser interference. Assume that channel state information is known at both the transmitter and receiver of each communication pair, Rayleigh fading, that the singular value decomposition (SVD) is applied to construct pre-coding/post-coding filters for single-user detection, and that transmitted signals of antennas are i.i.d. Gaussian. We first provide accurate expression for the achievable data rate (ADR) of each link, and show that, regardless of the interference power, when transceivers are equipped with equal number of antennas it grows sublinearly with the number of antennas. We then approximate RMI via Gaussian distribution that its mean is the ADR and its variance is derived based on network's parameters. It is seen that the Gaussian approximation is credible even when two streams of data are transmitted. This paper provides various insights regarding the impact of system parameters, including density of transmitters, path-loss exponent, and the number of antennas, on the ADR and CCDF of RMI. We finally spot tremendous benefits of the SVD scheme over other prominent multiplexing systems, including maximum ratio combining, zero-forcing, and diagonal BLAST superstructure with minimum mean square error receivers. Vector perturbation (VP) is a nonlinear precoding technique that achieves near-capacity performance in multiuser multiple-input multiple-output systems at the expense of large complexity due to the search for the optimum perturbation vector. In this paper, we present the hybrid Tomlinson–Harashima VP (TH-VP) algorithm, a novel zero-forcing precoding scheme, which combines TH precoding to remove interuser interference, and VP precoding to equalize each user's multiple spatial streams. We show that the two nonlinear techniques can be integrated in a single optimization and that the proposed algorithm has lower computational requirements than any other. The level crossing rate (LCR) is an important second-order statistical quantity that characterizes the rate of occurrence of fading time intervals. In this paper, we investigate the LCR of multiantenna flat-fading channels in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise and cochannel interferers with unequal received powers and Doppler shifts. We first present a unified approach to derive the exact LCR of the signal-to-interference-noise ratio at a receiver, where maximum ratio combining is deployed over spatially correlated or uncorrelated systems. Through the exact LCR derivation, we identify an accurate approach to obtain a simplified approximate LCR expression in the spatially uncorrelated system case. Benefits of the LCR expressions derived in the paper are demonstrated in two important applications: 1) the packet error rate is evaluated through the finite-state Markov channel model; and 2) the optimum packet length to maximize the throughput of the system with the stop-and-wait automatic repeat request protocol is derived. In this paper, we propose a reference-modulated permutation index differential chaos shift keying (RM-PI-DCSK) over multipath fading channels. Due to quasi-orthogonal property between different permutated chaotic signals, the proposed scheme can remarkably suppress the inter-sequence interference to recover the desired information. Moreover, the proposed RM-PI-DCSK has one more modulation bit in the reference segment than the conventional permutation index differential chaos shift keying (PI-DCSK). Both the reference signal in the first time-slot and a permuted replica of the reference in the second time-slot are modulated for efficient transmission. The theoretical bit-error-rate (BER) performance and the highly consistent simulation results demonstrate that the proposed RM-PI-DCSK can achieve a performance gain 3 dB over the conventional PI-DCSK at a BER of $10^{-4}$ , and this gain becomes larger in a high-delay-spread channel. In particular, the performance superiority of the RM-PI-DCSK is further demonstrated in a typical ultra-wideband (UWB) channel with narrow-band interference. Therefore, this proposed scheme can be deemed as an efficient transmission alternative for chaotic-based wireless communications, such as in wireless local area network (WLAN) applications and indoor applications of the transmitted-reference UWB. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are widely deployed to enhance the wireless network capacity and to provide communication services to mobile users beyond the infrastructure coverage. Recently, with the help of a promising technology called network virtualization, multiple service providers (SPs) can share the infrastructures and wireless resources owned by the mobile network operators (MNOs). Then, they provide specific services to their mobile users using the resources obtained from MNOs. However, wireless resource sharing among SPs is challenging as each SP wants to maximize their utility/profit selfishly while satisfying the QoS requirement of their mobile users. Therefore, in this paper, we propose joint users association and wireless resource sharing problem in the cell-free UAVs-assisted wireless networks with the objective of maximizing the total network utility of the SPs while ensuring QoS constraints of their mobile users and the resource constraints of the UAVs deployed by MNOs. To solve the proposed mixed-integer non-convex problem, we decompose the proposed problem into two subproblems: users association, and resource sharing problems. Then, a two-sided matching algorithm is deployed in order to solve users association problem. We further deploy the whale optimization and Lagrangian relaxation algorithms to solve the resource sharing problem. This paper considers limited feedback for a two-cell interfering multiple-input–multiple-output multiple-access channel (MIMO-MAC). We propose a QR decomposition-based interference alignment (QRD-IA) scheme for efficient limited feedback and investigate the conditions for the antenna configuration. We characterize the interference leakage caused by quantization error as a function of the number of feedback bits. To minimize the interference leakage, we further propose a quantized-precoder-based IA (QP-IA) scheme by modifying the proposed QRD-IA scheme. By characterizing the interference leakage of the QP-IA scheme, we investigate the number of feedback bits to maintain the degrees of freedom (DOFs) in the two-cell interfering MIMO-MAC and a feedback bit allocation algorithm to improve the sum rate. From simulation results, we demonstrate that our proposed schemes can provide better sum-rate performance than the existing scheme using the same number of feedback bits, and our feedback bit allocation algorithm provides a higher sum rate compared with equal feedback bit allocation. In this paper, the ergodic sum rate of a fading cognitive multiple-access channel (C-MAC) is studied, where a secondary network (SN) with multiple secondary users (SUs) transmitting to a secondary base station shares the spectrum band with a primary user (PU). An interference power constraint (IPC) is imposed on the SN to protect the PU. Under such a constraint and the individual transmit power constraint (TPC) imposed on each SU, we investigate the power allocation strategies to maximize the ergodic sum rate of a fading C-MAC without successive interference cancelation (SIC). In particular, this paper considers two types of constraints: 1) average TPC and average IPC and 2) peak TPC and peak IPC. For the first case, it is proved that the optimal power allocation is dynamic time-division multiple access (D-TDMA), which is exactly the same as the optimal power allocation to maximize the ergodic sum rate of the fading C-MAC with SIC under the same constraints. For the second case, it is proved that the optimal solution must be at the extreme points of the feasible region. It is shown that D-TDMA is optimal with high probability when the number of SUs is large. Device-to-device (D2D) communications underlaying cellular networks have been recently considered as a promising means to enhance resource utilization of the cellular network and local user throughput among devices in proximity to each other. In this paper, we investigate the joint resource block assignment and transmit power allocation problem to optimize the network performance in such a scenario. Specifically, we model the interference relationships among different D2D and cellular communication links as a novel interference graph with unique attributes and propose a corresponding joint resource-allocation scheme that can effectively lead to a near-optimal solution at the base station, with low computational complexity. Simulation results confirm that, with markedly reduced complexity, our proposed scheme achieves a network throughput that approaches the one corresponding to the optimal resource-sharing scheme obtained via exhaustive search. This paper studies the problem of multiuser sequential channel sensing and access in dynamic cognitive radio networks, in which the active-user set is randomly changing from slot to slot. Furthermore, each user only has its individual information with no information exchange among users. The goal of the users is to determine their channel sensing order. We first define a generalized interference metric to address the overlapping of channel sensing order and establish two optimization objectives: minimizing the aggregate interference for each active-user set and minimizing the expected aggregate interference for all potential users. It is challenging to solve the two optimization problems, even in a centralized manner, because the active-user set is randomly changing, and the probability distributions of the active-user sets are unknown to the users. We then propose two noncooperative game models to solve the optimization problems: a state-based one-shot game and a robust game. We prove that they are potential games and that the best Nash equilibrium of the two games corresponds to the optimal solutions of the two optimization problems, respectively. To cope with the uncertain, dynamic, and incomplete information constraints in the dynamic networks, we propose a stochastic learning algorithm, which is analytically proven to converge to Nash equilibria of the two formulated games in the presence of a changing active-player set. In the common model for spectrum sharing, cognitive users can access the spectrum as long as the target performance in the legitimate primary system is not violated. In this paper, we consider a downlink primary multiple-input single-output (MISO) system, which operates under a controlled interference from the downlink MISO cognitive radio, which is also called a secondary system. We derive exact expressions for outage probability of the primary user under Rayleigh fading, when the primary system is exposed to interference from a secondary base station (BS). We treat three different operating modes for the primary BS, namely, space–time coding, antenna selection, and beamforming, each of them with different channel information requirements. We first consider the case in which the primary BS uses a fixed rate, and we analyze the outage probability. In a high-signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) scenario, we derive closed-form asymptotic formulas for the outage probability. Furthermore, the optimum transmit power in the secondary system is investigated for maximizing the ergodic capacity when there is an outage constraint at the primary system, and simple solutions are proposed. We then consider the case with rate adaptation at the primary BS and introduce a suitable rate margin and a consistent requirement for primary throughput, for which we determine the outage probability. To be able to accommodate the secondary network, a rate margin is assumed at the primary link. We calculate the exact outage probabilities and average throughput of the adaptive-rate transmit-beamforming primary system, as well as the adaptive-rate transmit antenna-selection primary system. The analytical results are confirmed by simulations, in which we analyze the impact of different parameters, such as the number of antennas and the amount of the interference on the system performance. In noise-limited cooperative wireless networks, the diversity order of selection combining (SC) is the same as the diversity order of maximal ratio combining (MRC). The contribution of this paper is to report that the diversity order of SC and MRC may be different in the presence of randomly distributed interferers at the destination. More specifically, an amplify-and-forward (AF) dual-branch dual-hop cooperative relaying protocol in the presence of Nakagami- $m$ fading, additive Gaussian noise at the relay, and additive Gaussian noise and symmetric alpha-stable interference at the destination is investigated. By contrasting the diversity order of SC against recent results on the diversity of MRC, it is shown that both combining schemes provide the same diversity order if the distribution of the interference is unknown to the destination (interference-oblivious design) . They may achieve a different diversity order, on the other hand, if the interference can be estimated at the destination (interference-aware design) . Cognitive radio (CR) vehicular networks are poised to opportunistically use the licensed spectrum for high-bandwidth intervehicular messaging, driver-assist functions, and passenger entertainment services. Recent rulings that mandate the use of spectrum databases have introduced additional challenges in this highly mobile environment, where the CR-enabled vehicles must update their spectrum data frequently and complete the data transfers with roadside base stations (BSs) in very short interaction times. This paper aims to answer two fundamental questions: 1) when to undertake local spectrum sensing, as opposed to accessing spectrum database information at a finite cost overhead; and 2) how to ensure correct packet receptions among the multiple BSs and CR vehicles using fewer slots than the messages that need to be transmitted. The contributions of this paper are twofold: First, we introduce a method of qualifying the correctness of spectrum sensing results using out-of-band 2G spectrum data using experimental results. Second, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first work on applying the concept of interference alignment (IA) in a practical network setting, leading to dramatic reduction in message transmission times. It has been shown that the knowledge of both channel and data information at the base station prior to downlink transmission can help increase the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of each user without the need to increase the transmitted power. Achievability is based on the idea of phase alignment (PA) precoding, where instead of nulling out the destructive interference, it judiciously rotates the phases of the transmitted symbols. In this way, they add up coherently at the intended user and yield higher received SNRs. In addition, it is well known that regularized channel inversion (RCI) precoding improves the performance of channel inversion (CI) in multiantenna downlink communications. In line with this and similar to the RCI precoding, in this paper, we propose the idea of regularized PA (RPA), which is shown to improve the performance of original PA precoding. To do this, we first rectify the original PA precoding, deriving a closed-form expression to evaluate the amount of transmit-power reduction achieved for the same average output SNR compared with CI precoding. We then use this new analysis to select the appropriate regularization factor for our proposed RPA scheme. It is shown by means of theoretical analysis and simulations that the proposed RPA precoding outperforms CI, RCI, and PA precoders from both symbol error rate (SER) and throughput perspectives and provides a more power-efficient alternative. This is particularly pronounced as the number of transmit antennas becomes larger, where up to a 50-times reduction in the transmit power is achieved by RPA (PA) compared with RCI (CI) precoding for a given performance. In this paper, we investigate the problem of distributed channel selection for interference mitigation in a canonical communication network. The channel is assumed time-varying, and the active user set is considered dynamically variable due to the specific service requirement. This problem is formulated as an exact potential game, and the optimality property of the solution to this problem is first analyzed. Then, we design a low-complexity fully distributed no-regret learning algorithm for channel adaptation in a dynamic environment, where each active player can independently and automatically update its action with no information exchange. The proposed algorithm is proven to converge to a set of correlated equilibria with a probability of 1.
