With the growing penetration of distributed renewable energy, distributed control approaches are widely utilized in voltage control of active distribution networks (ADNs), suffering from limited applicability for control devices or heavy communication burden. This paper develops an innovative distributed voltage control strategy of ADNs with global sensitivities (DVC-GS), which integrates network information from a global optimization view to coordinate energy storages, PV inverters and the OLTC with little communication and computing time. The global sensitivities of voltage violations across all buses with respect to nodal voltage and active/reactive power injection are formulated to quantify the ability of each controllable resource for alleviating voltage violations in the entire ADN. The back-and-forth communication combined with the modified DistFlow model is newly developed for the real-time update of global sensitivities at each bus with high accuracy and no iteration. Then the coordinated control of various devices is implemented on basis of global sensitivities to effectively ensure voltage security of ADNs. This paper presents a computation-efficient stochastic dynamic programming algorithm for solving energy storage price arbitrage considering variable charge and discharge efficiencies. We formulate the price arbitrage problem using stochastic dynamic programming and model real-time prices as a Markov process. Then we propose an analytical solution algorithm using a piecewise linear approximation of the value-to-go function. Our solution algorithm achieves extreme computation performance and solves the proposed arbitrage problem for one operating day in less than one second on a personal computer. We demonstrate our approach using historical price data from four price zones in New York Independent System Operator, with case studies comparing the performance of different stochastic models and storage settings. Our results show that the proposed method captures 50% to 90% of arbitrage profit compared to perfect price forecasts. In particular, our method captures more than 80% of arbitrage profit in three out of the four price zones when considering batteries with more than two-hour duration and realistic degradation cost. Network reconfiguration (NR) has attracted much attention due to its ability to convert conventional distribution networks (DNs) into self-healing grids. This paper proposes a new strategy for real-time voltage regulation (VR) in a reconfigurable DN, whereby optimal feedforward control of distributed generators (DGs) is achieved in coordination with the operation of line switches (SWs). This enables preemptive compensation of upcoming deviations in DN voltages resulting from NR-aided load restoration. A robust optimization problem is formulated using a dynamic analytical model of NR to design the feedforward voltage controllers (FVCs) that minimize voltage deviations with respect to the H∞ norm. Errors in the estimates of DG modeling parameters and load demands are reflected in the design of optimal FVCs via polytopic uncertainty modeling. Small-signal analysis and case studies are conducted, verifying the effectiveness and robustness of the optimal FVCs in improving real-time VR when NR is activated for load restoration. This paper proposes an online voltage control strategy of distributed energy resources (DERs), based on the projected Newton method (PNM), for unbalanced distribution networks. The optimal Volt/VAr control (VVC) problem is formulated as an optimization program, with the goal of maintaining the voltage profile across the network by coordinating the VAr outputs of DERs. To overcome the slow convergence rate of conventional gradient-based methods, a PNM-based solution algorithm is developed to solve this VVC problem. It utilizes a non-diagonal symmetric positive definite matrix, developed from the Hessian matrix of the objective, to scale the gradient, and thus a fast convergence performance can be expected in this Newton-like algorithm. Moreover, taking advantage of the instantaneous feedback of voltage measurements, the online implementation of the PNM-based VVC is further designed to deal with fast system variations. In this online PNM-based VVC scheme, each bus agent communicates the instantaneous voltage measurements to the central agent, and the central agent communicates the VAr output commands of DERs back to each bus agent. The fast convergence performance of PNM results in a stronger capability to track the system variations in real time. This paper proposes a novel stochastic robust real-time power dispatch model considering wind uncertainty. In this dispatch model that incorporates automatic power generation control, system constraints are constructed with affinely adjustable robust optimization to enhance the system security, while the objective concerning the expected value of generation cost is optimized to improve the cost efficiency. The optimized objective is consistent with stochastic optimization, while the formulation for the objective is different. A Nataf conversion-based three-point estimate (NC-TPE) is adopted, which uses an approximating function to formulate the expected generation cost with deterministic estimate points. Compared to traditional stochastic sampling methods, the deterministic assessment method NC-TPE achieves an accurate formulation with more stable and efficient computation performance. The dispatch model is derived as a problem with nonconvex objective and bilinear constraints using the dual theory. To address the highly nonconvex problem, the objective and bilinear constraints are first converted to difference-of-convexity functions, and then a tailored difference-of-convexity optimization is employed to convexify the nonconvex functions, such that the original problem can be solved with an iterative quadratically constrained program. This paper addressesthe problem of real-time state estimation in European-type four-wire low-voltage distribution networks with advanced metering infrastructure based on power line communication (PLC). The main drawback of this type of infrastructure is its high latency and a sequential data sampling process. Both factors make it difficult to obtain instantaneous values from the smart meters in a timely and adequate manner to estimate the real-time state of the system. This problem may be solved in the future with the deployment of metering systems based on other technologies such as 5G. However, PLC technology prevails in many countries, and is not likely to be replaced in the medium term. In the meantime, a solution is needed to provide acceptable real-time state estimates in low voltage networks, not to hinder the active management of these assets in the context of smart grids. In this work, a solution is proposed that allows estimating the state of the low voltage network with a reasonable accuracy considering the low quality of the measurements provided by the deployed infrastructure. Optimal Volt/VAR control (VVC) in distribution networks relies on an effective coordination between the conventional utility-owned mechanical devices and the smart residential photovoltaic (PV) inverters. Typically, a central controller carries out a periodic optimization and sends setpoints to the local controller of each device. However, instead of tracking centrally dispatched setpoints, smart PV inverters can cooperate on a much faster timescale to reach optimality within a PV inverter group. To accommodate such PV inverter groups in the VVC architecture, this paper proposes a bi-level optimization framework. The upper-level determines the setpoints of the mechanical devices to minimize the network active power losses, while the lower-level represents the coordinated actions that the inverters take for their own objectives. The interactions between these two levels are captured in the bi-level optimization, which is solved using the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions. This framework fully exploits the capabilities of the different types of voltage regulation devices and enables them to cooperatively optimize their goals. This paper presents a wind turbine (WT) control strategy to deliver frequency response (FR) that is similar to conventional synchronous generators, i.e., to deliver accurate and efficient FR. This is achieved by the coordination of WT’s rotor speed control (RSC) and pitch angle control (PAC), wherein the RSC is the summation of the proposed deloading power point tracking curves and FR signal; the PAC is kept as adjusting its control law according to the WT rotor speed. Through the above coordination, the strategy pre-reserves a portion of wind power and releasing it during underfrequency events. Compared with existing methods, the strategy has two significant advantages: 1) it does not need the switching of WT controls according to the real-time wind speed (WS), nor the identification of the boundaries among high, medium and low WSs according to the required reserved power, ultimately reducing the complexity of applying the strategy to practice; 2) its active power response during FR period is independent of the deviated rotor speed and is equal to the FR signal, ultimately enabling the WT to provide accurate and efficient FR. The quantification of heating, ventilation, and air condition (HVAC) system flexibility is critical to the operations of both the grid and buildings in demand response (DR) programs. However, the flexibility quantification is challenging due to the non-linearity and non-convexity of thermal dynamics associated with HVAC components. This paper proposes a novel HVAC flexibility quantification method based on a semidefinite programming (SDP) formulation. The SDP is reformulated from the non-convex problem of HVAC power optimization, and can be solved efficiently in real-time. The physics-based HVAC model is incorporated to ensure the reliability and accuracy of solutions. The quantification results are organized into an HVAC flexibility table that can provide response strategies on adjusting HVAC setpoints in response to the grid signals received. The developed response strategies minimize occupant discomfort while satisfying grid requirements. The design of electricity imbalance pricing mechanisms is internationally controversial. Policies on whether to permit virtual trading for market participants and whether, or how, to impose penalty incentives on the imbalance volumes vary widely. Furthermore, market designs vary depending whether the imbalance prices are obtained directly from real-time trading or based upon the offer and demand functions from the day-ahead energy markets. This paper develops an analytical framework for evaluating designs for imbalance settlement mechanisms and we have selected the Japanese electricity market, which has undergone several revisions in its imbalance mechanism, as a good example to assess such variations. We develop a predictive approach for the imbalance volumes and price densities using two-step quantile regressions and derive a new trading optimization for a virtual trader's arbitrage position. We construct supporting models to estimate prediction errors for renewable power and demand as drivers of imbalance volume. The empirical analysis reveals that even in a mechanism with imbalance penalties based upon day-ahead reference prices, virtual trading may still be beneficial to market participants as well as to the system operator. We propose a chance-constrained formulation for the problem of dimensioning frequency restoration reserves on a power transmission network. We cast our problem as a two-stage stochastic mixed integer linear program, and propose a heuristic algorithm for solving the problem. Our model accounts for the simultaneous sizing of both upward and downward reserves, and uncertainty driven by imbalances, contingencies and available transmission capacity. Our core methodology is further adapted in order to minimize inter-zonal flows and in order to split reserve requirements between automatic and manual frequency restoration reserves. We apply our methodology to the problem of sizing reserves in the four load frequency control areas of the Swedish power system. We demonstrate the benefits of our method in terms of decreasing reserve requirements in the absence of reserve sharing, we analyze the spatial allocation of reserves, and we perform various sensitivity analyses. In this work we propose a novel data-driven, real-time power system voltage control method based on the physics-informed guided meta evolutionary strategy (ES). The main objective is to quickly provide an adaptive control strategy to mitigate the fault-induced delayed voltage recovery (FIDVR) problem. Reinforcement learning methods have been developed for the same or similar challenging control problems, but they suffer from training inefficiency and lack of robustness for “corner or unseen” scenarios. On the other hand, extensive physical knowledge has been developed in power systems but little has been leveraged in learning-based approaches. To address these challenges, we introduce the trainable action mask technique for flexibly embedding physical knowledge into RL models to rule out unnecessary or unfavorable actions, and achieve notable improvements in sample efficiency, control performance and robustness. Furthermore, our method leverages past learning experience to derive surrogate gradient to guide and accelerate the exploration process in training. Voltage-to-power sensitivities play a key role in the control and operation of distribution networks. To estimate these sensitivities without network information, data-driven estimation methods have been studied. However, conventional methods do not consider mutual dependency (MD) of the sensitivities and thus the estimation can be inaccurate. Thus, this paper proposes a new data-driven estimation method of the sensitivities, which considers MD of the sensitivities in medium voltage distribution networks. In the proposed method, via MD analysis, the sensitivities are estimated by solving nonlinear least square problems and thus the accurate estimation can be achieved. The proliferation of distributed energy resources (DER) under diverse jurisdiction in distribution networks raises new challenges to the utility. Real-time detection of the microgrid stability is crucial for determining and adjusting the power-sharing droop control's gains to maintain a sufficient stability margin. Maintaining minimum relative stability should be ensured at different operating conditions to accommodate sudden system changes. This article develops a novel subspace-based identification technique to assess microgrid stability in real-time without relying on offline analytical small or large-signal models. Unlike conventional system identification techniques that require the introduction of external excitation (signal probing, load switching, or contingency event), the proposed method employs a simple internal routine through small and short-duration perturbations in the active power droop gain of inverter-based distributed generation (IBDG). The use of subspace identification does not require pre-defining the system's order, avoids the exhaustive computations associated with iterative identification methods and can handle a change of microgrid's network configuration. The proposed stability assessment method has been tested on an IBDG microgrid considering different operating conditions in MATLAB/Simulink. The accuracy of the proposed real-time stability assessment tool is determined by comparing the results to the analytically-derived small-signal model as well as the Matrix pencil and Prony methods. This paper proposes a novel machine-learning approach for predicting AC-OPF solutions that features a fast and scalable training. It is motivated by the significant training time needed by existing machine-learning approaches for predicting AC-OPF. The proposed approach is a 2-stage methodology that exploits a spatial decomposition of the power network that is viewed as a set of regions. The first stage learns to predict the flows and voltages on the buses and lines coupling the regions, and the second stage trains, in parallel, the machine-learning models for each region. The predictions can then seed a power flow to eliminate the physical constraint violations, resulting in minor violations only for the operational bound constraints. Experimental results on the French transmission system (up to 6,700 buses) and large test cases from the pglib library (up to 9,000 buses) demonstrate the potential of the approach. Within a short training time, the approach predicts AC-OPF solutions with very high fidelity, producing significant improvements over the state-of-the-art. Zonal pricing is a well-suited mechanism to incentivize grid-supporting behavior of profit-maximizing producers and consumers operating on a large-scale power system. In zonal electricity markets, local system operators create individual price zones, which provide appropriate price signals depending on local grid conditions such as an excess or shortage of electrical energy in certain regions. In this paper, a real-time zonal pricing controller for AC power networks is presented that ensures frequency and voltage stability as well as Pareto efficiency of the resulting closed-loop equilibria. Based on a dynamic network model that takes line losses and power exchange with adjacent price zones into account, distributed continuous-time control laws are derived which require only neighbor-to-neighbor communication. Application to a real-time congestion management strategy illustrates how spatially and temporally differentiated prices enable grid-supportive operation of the participants without interventions by a superordinate control authority. Participants in electricity markets are becoming more proactive owing to the fast deployment of distributed energy resources (DERs) and the further development of demand-side management (DSM), which also boosts the emergence of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) market mechanisms. Moreover, the market is also required to operate in a real-time scheme in response to changes in generation and load to maintain power balance. It is highly desirable to propose and analyse novel approaches suitable for real-time P2P market mechanisms. These are challenging since most often involving a heavy computational burden, while the time available for negotiation in real-time is very short. Our core contribution is to design and analyse a novel asynchronous online optimization framework and related real-time P2P market negotiation mechanism, which can greatly reduce the computation and communication burden from two aspects. First, a novel online consensus alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm is proposed. It significantly reduces computation since only one iteration is performed for each agent at every time period. Second, the market operates in an asynchronous mode so that all agents can freely trade without waiting for idle or inactive neighboring agents. The sublinear regret upper bound is proved for our asynchronous online algorithm, which indicates that social welfare in the market can be maximized in the long run on average (over time). To improve the topology observability in power distribution networks (PDNs), a two-stage topology identification framework is proposed to recognize the mixed topologies in a large set of historical data and predict the real-time topology based on the nodal measurements. A split expectation-maximization (split-EM) method is proposed considering the measurement errors to deal with the topology identification problem on the historical batch data, in which the number of topology categories does not need to be given in advance. Based on the topology identification results of historical data, the number of topology categories is reduced. Then, feasible classifiers are trained using machine learning methods to predict the real-time topology efficiently. An error-correcting mechanism is proposed for the real-time identification involving the credibility analysis and the reidentification based on the Bayesian recursion model. Finally, via a practical example, the effectiveness of the proposed models is verified by efficiently identifying the PDN's topologies in both the historical batch data with mixed topologies and real-time measurements. In addition, the partition-based extension application solution of the topology identification models for large-scale PDNs is proposed without extra measurements to relieve the calculation burden and reduce the identification time notably while maintaining the accuracy as the non-partitioned scheme. High penetrations of photovoltaic (PV) systems can cause severe voltage quality problems in distribution networks. This paper proposes a distributed control strategy based on the dynamic formation of coalitions to coordinate a large number of PV inverters for voltage regulation. In this strategy, a rule-based coalition formation scheme deals with the zonal voltage difference caused by the uneven integration of PV capacity. Under this scheme, PV inverters form into separate voltage regulation coalitions autonomously according to local, neighbor as well as coalition voltage magnitude and regulation capacity information. To coordinate control within each coalition, we develop a feedback-based leader-follower consensus algorithm which eliminates the voltage violations caused by the fast fluctuations of load and PV generation. This algorithm allocates the required reactive power contribution among the PV inverters according to their maximum available capacity to promote an effective and fair use of the overall voltage regulation capacity. Case studies based on realistic distribution networks and field-recorded data validate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy. Moreover, comparison with a centralized network decomposition-based scheme shows the flexibility of coalition formation in organizing the distributed PV inverters. Over the past 20 years, the rapid integration of renewable energy has resulted in electricity markets that are increasingly complex, interconnected, and uncertain. Similar to the banking system's financial crisis in 2008 due to chained reactions, severe financial losses due to uncertainty at a large renewable farm could induce significant financial losses at other market participants. The spread of such financial shocks can be worsened by centralized market clearing, and systemic risks consequently germinate in electricity market operations. Therefore, our previous work has compared systemic risk with systematic risk in the electricity market with uncertainties. However, the scope of our previous work has been limited to risk indices. This paper aims to broaden the study by proposing the theoretical foundation of systemic risk analysis in electricity markets with uncertainties. First, an electricity market financial network is defined to describe the cash inflow/outflow of all participants, and the financial contagion is employed to model the interlinks between different entities. Then, two financial properties, financial resilience and financial reliability, are proposed to evaluate the systemic risk in market settlements with uncertainties. This paper presents a distribution system operator (DSO) framework for wholesale and retail market participation of distributed energy resources (DERs) aggregators. The DSO coordinates aggregators’ energy and regulation offers as well as end-users’ energy consumption through the unbalanced retail market and submits balanced energy and regulation offers to the wholesale market on behalf of all the aggregators and end-users within its territory. Various kinds of DER aggregators including demand response aggregators (DRAGs), energy storage aggregators (ESAGs), electric vehicle (EV) charging stations (EVCSs), dispatchable distributed generation aggregators (DDGAGs), and renewable energy aggregators (REAGs) are modeled. To handle unbalanced distribution grids with single-phase aggregators, a linearized unbalanced power flow is tailored to model operating constraints of the distribution grid with various aggregators. A market settlement approach is proposed for the DSO, which coordinates with wholesale market clearing process and ensures the DSO’s non-profit characteristic. It is proved that at the wholesale-DSO coupling substation, the total payment received/compensated by the DSO under the wholesale price is identical to that under three single-phase retail prices for each phase at the substation. Convergence bidding, a.k.a., virtual bidding, has been widely adopted in wholesale electricity markets in recent years. It provides opportunities for market participants to arbitrage on the difference between the day-ahead market locational marginal prices and the real-time market locational marginal prices. Given the fact that convergence bids (CBs) have a significant impact on the operation of electricity markets, it is important to understand how market participants strategically select their CBs in real-world electricity markets. We address this open problem with focus on the electricity market that is operated by the California Independent System Operator (ISO). In this regard, we use the publicly available electricity market data to learn, characterize, and evaluate different types of convergence bidding strategies that are currently used by market participants. Our analysis includes developing a data-driven reverse engineering method that we apply to three years of real-world California ISO market data. Our analysis involves feature selection and density-based data clustering. It results in identifying three main clusters of CB strategies in the California ISO market. Different characteristics and the performance of each cluster of strategies are analyzed. Interestingly, we unmask a common real-world strategy that does not match any of the existing strategic convergence bidding methods in the literature. Next, we build upon the lessons learned from the advantages and disadvantages of the existing real-world strategies in order to propose a new CB strategy that can significantly outperform them. Our analysis includes developing a new strategy for convergence bidding. The new strategy has three steps: net profit maximization by capturing price spikes, dynamic node labeling, and strategy selection algorithm. We show through case studies that the annual net profit for the most lucrative market participants can increase by over 40% if the proposed convergence bidding strategy is used. The output of renewable generation depends on the real-time weather conditions and changes rapidly; so the economic operating point of the power system varies over time. This paper aims to find the explicit mapping from variable renewable power to optimal power flow solutions. To this end, we propose a parametric distribution optimal power flow (P-DOPF) method, which gives the optimal dispatch strategy and power flow status as analytical functions of the renewable output. With the established distribution optimal power flow problem based on the relaxed Distflow model, the first step is to perform a global polyhedral approximation on the second-order cone constraints to develop a linearized formulation. The second step is to obtain the P-DOPF model by treating renewable power output as parameters; then, the P-DOPF problem gives rise to a multi-parametric linear program (mp-LP). Third, we prove that the optimal solution and optimal value of the P-DOPF are piecewise linear functions of the parameters and we design an adaptive-sampling algorithm to construct the optimal value and optimal solution functions, as well as the partition of the parameter set, subject to a given error tolerance; this algorithm is not influenced by model degeneracy, a common difficulty of existing mp-LP algorithms. The P-DOPF framework provides an explicit real-time control policy of generators in response to the renewable output. Case studies on the IEEE 33 and 69-bus systems verify the effectiveness and performance of the proposed method; by comparison, the proposed method outperforms the established affine policy method in computational efficiency and optimality by 24.5% and 4.62%, respectively. The proliferation of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) to monitor power grid dynamics at a high resolution (10–100 samples/sec) has opened a new paradigm to situational awareness. Existing event detection techniques for identifying multiple events like transmission line faults, generation trip, line trip, load loss, current transformer (CT) failure, islanding, etc., are prone to misdetection, delayed detection, and false detection. Moreover, most of them can detect events either with fast (transient events) or slow dynamics (oscillatory and excursion events) using synchrophasor measurements. This paper focuses on detecting events with both fast and slow dynamics using wide-area frequency measurements. To this end, a novel method is proposed based on Weibull distribution, which we call as Weibull-based Excursion Transient and Oscillatory (WETO) method. The WETO method can identify the time of inception, location, and severity of the event in near real-time using only a single parameter, known as variability. The events are detected within a time window of 5 cycles using only frequency measurements. The proposed method is validated for the Indian as well as the North American grid disturbances, and the results show that it would be beneficial to the system operator in visualizing the true situation of the grid events. Virtual power plant (VPP) provides a flexible solution to distributed energy resources integration by aggregating renewable generation units, conventional power plants, energy storages, and flexible demands. This paper proposes a novel stochastic adaptive robust optimization (SARO) model for determining the optimal self-scheduling plan for VPP’s participation in the day-ahead energy-reserve market. We consider exogenous uncertainties (or called decision-independent uncertainties, DIUs) associated with market clearing prices and available wind generation, as well as endogenous uncertainties (or called decision-dependent uncertainties, DDUs) pertaining to real-time reserve deployment requests. A tractable solution methodology based on modified Benders dual decomposition is developed to effectively solve the proposed SARO model with both DIUs and DDUs. Case studies are conducted to verify the efficiency and applicability of the proposed approach. Comparative results show that the proposed method can mitigate the conservatism of robust strategy by capturing a satisfactory trade-off between profitability and real-time operation feasibility. This paper proposes a novel real-time adaptive under voltage load shedding (UVLS) method by using optimized fuzzy logic controllers to address fault-induced delayed voltage recovery (FIDVR) and short-term voltage instability (STVIS) problems. An intelligent multi-input multi-output fuzzy logic load shedding controller is developed based on a short-term voltage recovery criterion (STVRC). For the controller, the magnitude deviation and the recovery time deviation of voltage trajectory are extracted as inputs, while the load shedding amount at the current load shedding stage and the time delay of the next stage are taken as outputs. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique is further employed for the tuning of the controller parameters to realize the voltage recovery requirement at the lowest cost of load shedding. The proposed UVLS method is formed by a group of the fuzzy logic controllers deployed at the load buses, each monitoring its own bus voltage and shedding load in closed-loop. Responding to the severity of voltage variations, the proposed method is able to adaptively determine the location, time and amount of load shedding in real-time to make the voltage satisfy the STVRC. This paper proposes a direct damping feedback control method against power system oscillations under small or large disturbances. For a targeted oscillation mode, this control method continuously minimizes the difference between the real-time estimated damping ratio and a desired value by changing power outputs of selected inverter-based resources. The method adopts a proportional-integral controller whose parameters are tuned using a nonlinear single-input-single-output model on damping estimation and control with a single-oscillator equivalent regarding the targeted power system mode. Also, optimization of these controller parameters considers both robustness and time performance in damping control. The paper also proposes utilizing a “zero-th order” parametric resonance phenomenon to simplify the controller design. Tests on a small power system and a 140-bus 48-machine Northeast Power Coordinating Council system validate the effectiveness of the proposed damping controller utilizing battery-based energy storage systems. Microgrids incorporate an increasing number of distributed energy resources (DERs), which induce a higher variability and faster dispatch capabilities in power systems. This paper proposes a two-layer real-time scheduling model for microgrids, based on approximate future cost function (AFCF), where the future cost represents the opportunity cost for the microgrid operation in subsequent periods. At the upper layer, the look-ahead rolling scheduling is adopted to optimize microgrid operations, in which the future cost function (FCF) in deterministic and stochastic scenarios is approximated by a piecewise linear function. At the lower layer, a real-time parameter updating strategy based on real-time data is proposed. In this case, the real-time scheduling readjusts the look-ahead schedule using the immediate cost in the current period and the future cost calculated by the updated AFCF. The proposed two-layer real-time scheduling model uses an offline optimization, in which most of the computation tasks are completed at the upper layer, and applies a real-time optimization, in which the time-consuming problem is avoided at the lower layer. The effectiveness of the proposed two-layer real-time scheduling model of microgrids is validated by using a grid-connected microgrid system. Security-constrained unit commitment (SCUC) model is used for power system day-ahead scheduling. However, current SCUC model uses a static network to deliver power and meet demand optimally. A dynamic network can provide a lower optimal cost and alleviate network congestion. However, due to the computational complexity and the lack of effective algorithms, network reconfiguration has not been included in the SCUC model yet. This paper presents a novel approach to handle the computational complexity in security-constrained unit commitment (SCUC) with corrective network reconfiguration (CNR) while considering the scalability through accelerated-decomposition approach with fast screening non-critical sub-problems of SCUC-CNR. The proposed approach provides substantial computational benefits and is also applicable to SCUC. Simulation results on the IEEE 24-bus system show that the proposed methods are substantially faster without the loss in solution quality while the scalability benefits are demonstrated using larger cases: the IEEE 73-bus system, IEEE 118-bus system and Polish system. AC optimal power flow (AC-OPF) problems need to be solved more frequently in the future to maintain stable and economic power system operation. To tackle this challenge, a deep neural network-based voltage-constrained approach (DeepOPF-V) is proposed to solve AC-OPF problems with high computational efficiency. Its unique design predicts voltages of all buses and then uses them to reconstruct the remaining variables without solving non-linear AC power flow equations. A fast post-processing process is also developed to enforce the box constraints. The effectiveness of DeepOPF-V is validated by simulations on IEEE 118/300-bus systems and a 2000-bus test system. Compared with existing studies, DeepOPF-V achieves decent computation speedup up to four orders of magnitude and comparable performance in optimality gap, while preserving feasibility of the solution. As renewable energy penetration increases and system inertia levels drop, primary frequency control is becoming a critical concern in relatively small interconnections such as the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). To address this problem ERCOT is implementing a number of market rule changes including the introduction of a new Fast Frequency Response (FFR) reserve type to the electricity market. This FFR reserve type aims to help the traditional Primary Frequency Response (PFR) reserve type in arresting frequency decline in the event of a large generator outage. This paper derives reserve requirements to ensure sufficient reserve to arrest frequency decline before reaching the critical frequency threshold while coupling PFR reserve, FFR reserve, and system inertia. The general reserve requirement places limits on the amount of PFR reserve that can be provided by each unit based on its ramping capabilities. Two such limits are derived from first principles and another is proposed that is capable of accommodating the equivalency ratio introduced in previous work. These PFR reserve limits also provide first principles insight into equivalency ratios, which have only been studied empirically in the past. This paper proposes the design of two coordinated wide-area damping controllers (CWADCs) for damping low frequency oscillations (LFOs), while accounting for the uncertainties present in the power system. The controllers based on Deep Neural Network (DNN) and Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), respectively, coordinate the operation of different local damping controls such as power system stabilizers (PSSs), static VAr compensators (SVCs), and supplementary damping controllers for DC lines (DC-SDCs). The DNN-CWADC learns to make control decisions using supervised learning; the training dataset consisting of polytopic controllers designed with the help of linear matrix inequality (LMI)-based mixed $H_2/H_\infty$ optimization. The DRL-CWADC learns to adapt to the system uncertainties based on its continuous interaction with the power system environment by employing an advanced version of the state-of-the-art deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm referred to as bounded exploratory control-based DDPG (BEC-DDPG). In the highly interdependent environment of a large city, failures in the Electrical Distribution System (EDS) can cause direct or indirect consequences to other critical infrastructures and the well-being of the citizens. To increase the resilience of the supply of electricity to the city, this work combines the pre-training of an AI agent and very fast calculation of the optimum recovery path after the number and location of the electrical faults are known. In the introduced Soft-Hard Optimal Convergence (SHOC) method, machine learning techniques are used to train an AI agent with thousands of off-line scenarios for optimum system restoration. In real-time, after the actual fault information is known, the agent will provide a subset of solutions (soft solution) to be considered for hard optimization algorithms. The Infrastructure Interdependencies Simulator (i2SIM) is used to assist the prioritization of the sequence of fault recovery and topological reconfiguration to minimize the black-out time of the most critical loads. A 70-node distribution system case is used to demonstrate the proposed methodology, with solution times in the order of seconds to find the optimum repair sequence and switches topological reconfiguration to optimize the city's resilience index. Prior-art market mechanism designs in the literature do not well distinguish the primary frequency reserve resources with different response rates. This letter proposes a performance ratio that quantifies the relative effectiveness of generators and flexible demand resources in frequency regulation considering their response rates. A large-scale deployment of phasor measurement units (PMUs) that reveal the inherent physical laws of power systems from a data perspective enables an enhanced awareness of power system operation. However, the high-granularity and non-stationary nature of PMU data and imperfect data quality could bring great technical challenges for real-time system event identification. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a two-stage learning-based framework. In the first stage, a Markov transition field (MTF) algorithm is exploited to extract the latent data features by encoding temporal dependency and transition statistics of PMU data in graphs. Then, a spatial pyramid pooling (SPP)-aided convolutional neural network (CNN) is established to efficiently and accurately identify power events. The proposed method fully builds on and is also tested on a large real-world dataset from several tens of PMU sources (and the corresponding event logs), located across the U.S., with a time span of two consecutive years. The penetration of photovoltaics (PVs) has been increasing in active distribution networks (ADN), which leads to severe voltage violation problems. PV inverters can provide fast and flexible reactive power support and are now allowed to participate in the voltage regulation process. This paper proposes a real-time combined central and local Volt/Var control (VVC) strategy to mitigate voltage violation problems while minimizing the network power loss. Based on the historical PV and load data, the load flow and optimal power flow are performed in the centralized controller (CC) to obtain multiple voltage and optimal power settings for each PV system. The local controller (LC) then generates voltage control curves with these optimal scatters. To improve the voltage control effect, a novel 3-Dimension voltage control curve is proposed considering both the measurements of node voltage and PV generation. Moreover, a data-driven deep convolution neural network is designed and trained to generate optimal local voltage control curves without prior knowledge of specific curve functions. The proposed approach is tested on the IEEE 33-bus distribution system and simulation results verify the effectiveness in voltage control compared with the optimal Q(V) and Q(P) method. Ensuring reliable operation of large power systems subjected to multiple outages is a challenging task because of the combinatorial nature of the problem. Traditional approaches for security assessment are often limited by their scope and/or speed, resulting in missing of critical contingencies that could lead to cascading failures. This paper proposes a two-component methodology to enhance power system security. The first component combines an efficient algorithm to detect cut-set saturation (called the feasibility test (FT) algorithm) with real-time contingency analysis (RTCA) to create an integrated corrective action (iCA), whose goal is to secure the system against cut-set saturation as well as critical branch overloads. The second component only employs the results of the FT to create a relaxed corrective action (rCA) to secure the system against post-contingency cut-set saturation. The first component is more comprehensive, but the latter is computationally more efficient. The effectiveness of the two components is evaluated based upon the number of cascade triggering contingencies alleviated, and the computation time. The results obtained by analyzing different case-studies on the IEEE 118-bus and 2000-bus synthetic Texas systems indicate that the proposed two-component methodology successfully enhances the scope and speed of power system security assessment during multiple outages. This paper proposes a real-time coordinated scheduling method for active distribution networks (ADNs) with soft open points (SOPs) and plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) via multi-timescale framework under uncertainties. Specifically, this method is achieved with day-ahead pre-scheduling and intra-day corrective control stages by coordinating various flexible resources at different timescales. The day-ahead stage is designed to reduce operational cost, regulate voltage profile and avoid risk exposure through joint scheduling of traditional devices, SOPs and PEVs on hourly basis. In intra-day corrective control stage, an hour is further divided into two timescales. The slow-timescale scheduling (STS) aims to corrective coordination of SOPs and across-time-and-space energy transmission of PEVs, and nested within the STS, the fast-timescale scheduling optimally coordinates the active & reactive power of SOPs and PV inverters to handle fast voltage fluctuations as well as against real-time uncertainties. The formulated three models are all transformed into second-order cone programming problems via sample weighted average approximation (SWAA), linearization and conic relaxation, which can be thus efficiently solved. Accurate grid topology information is of paramount importance for routine power system operations, while the growing availability of synchrophasor data offers the opportunity to identify topology changes in real time. Identification of bus split events, where the substation becomes electrically disconnected, is becoming increasingly important for maintaining the security of power systems. This paper aims to provide an efficient modeling and monitoring framework for bus split events by using a concise bus-branch representation. The linear sensitivity analysis is first performed to quickly evaluate the grid-wide impact of such events. Furthermore, the synchrophasor data enabled identification problem is formulated by matching the changes in bus phase angles (and possibly line flows). To address the resultant bilinear multiplication involving the binary connectivity variables, the McCormick relaxation technique is leveraged to attain an equivalent mixed-integer linear program reformulation that is efficiently solvable. The transience and unpredictability of processes in electric power systems (EPS) determine complexity of its control. This problem is especially relevant for EPS with renewable energy sources and flexible alternating current transmission systems technologies. Automatic control systems simplify the solution of this problem. Despite this, many issues related to EPS state control are solved by power system operators. Decision support systems (DSS) are applying to increase efficiency of operators work. However, existing algorithms in practice are inoperable in some cases: unrealizable decisions are formed, or decision cannot be found at all, etc. Another important problem is impossibility to preliminarily verify the proposed solution. In this regard, operators can additionally use EPS simulators, which are usually limited either by the size of simulated scheme or by the details of equipment mathematical models. The limitations are a consequence of numerical methods using, which are badly applicable for large-scale power systems simulation. In this article, a novel DSS has been developed based on a hybrid approach to EPS modeling combining properties and capabilities of several simulation techniques: analog, physical and digital. The implicit integration of differential equations in analog way makes possible modeling faster than real time. Such opportunity allows operator to verify more decisions and select the most effective ones. The algorithm for DSS application has been developed and described in the article. This paper discusses the impact of discrete secondary controllers on the dynamic response of power systems. The idea of the paper originates from the observation that there is a range of values, from few tens of seconds to few minutes, of the execution cycles of conventional automatic generation control (AGC) that leads to a limit cycle. Below and above this range the system is stable. This is certainly not a problem in practice as the AGC updates the power set points of generating units every few seconds. However, this phenomenon has interesting consequences if one considers real-time electricity markets with short dispatch periods (i.e., 5 minutes) as these markets can be modeled as a sort of AGC. The paper first provides a formal analogy between conventional AGC and real-time electricity markets. Then it shows that the discretization-driven instability exists if the system includes a real-time electricity market modeled as secondary frequency controller. Securing profits from energy, reserve capacity and balancing markets is critical to ensure the profitability of battery energy systems (BES). However, the intimate connection between offers on these trading floors combined with the limited energy storage capacity of BES renders its scheduling very complex. In this paper, we develop a bilevel optimization problem for strategic participation of a BES in the day-ahead energy-reserve and balancing markets, improving the state-of-the-art by (i) considering the conditional-value-at-risk; (ii) ensuring the real-time feasibility of the obtained day-ahead schedule; (iii) addressing the operational underperformance risk stemming from inaccurate battery modeling. In a case study, we illustrate how the proposed model allows risk-averse BES owners to hedge their day-ahead position without jeopardizing their expected profit, while ensuring the feasibility of their day-ahead schedule. The European balancing market is undergoing radical transformation through numerous market design initiatives. These initiatives aim at improving geographical coordination among European transmission system operators, and better positioning the European system for integrating renewable resources through short-term operational efficiency and long-term investment in flexible resources. However, the European design is characterized by a missing market for real-time reserve capacity, that has been inherited from a failure to recognize the central role of real-time operations as the spot market of the electric power industry. This missing market undermines the valuation of reserve capacity, and the back-propagation of price signals to forward reserve markets that can support investment in reserves. The goal of the present paper is to develop a methodology that exposes the implications of this missing market. The methodology relies on analytical insights that can be derived under an assumption of price-taking behavior. These insights are validated by a simulation model which represents the European balancing market as a Markov Decision Process. The simulation model is used for validating the analytical insights and testing the ability of various balancing market design options to back-propagate the real-time value of reserve to forward reserve markets. The focus of this paper is on analyzing the impact of conservation voltage reduction in the presence of active devices such as solar photovoltaic (PV) and developing controls that leverage these distributed energy resources. An event-driven predictive approach for real-time volt/volt-ampere reactive (VAR) optimization, along with a local two-level adaptive volt/VAR droop-based control algorithm for advanced distribution management systems, is introduced. The methodology covers aggregated and autonomous controls under different timescale operations, including the impact and effect of unpredicted events such as cloud transients on PV power production. Besides, the control schemes include the uncertainties in PV power generation and load power demand. The proposed methodology is validated in a real-time framework using the real-time digital simulator platform through co-simulation with models based on Python and OpenDSS (Open Distribution System Simulator). The developed methodology is tested on the modified IEEE 123-feeder test system. The results reveal that the proposed methodology works well in the presence of high penetrations of PV power, produces significant energy savings, and mitigates over-/undervoltage problems. Pricing multi-interval economic dispatch of electric power under operational uncertainty is considered in this two-part paper. Part I investigates dispatch-following incentives of profit-maximizing generators and shows that, under mild conditions, no uniform-pricing scheme for the rolling-window economic dispatch provides dispatch-following incentives that avoid discriminative out-of-the-market uplifts. A nonuniform pricing mechanism, referred to as the temporal locational marginal pricing (TLMP), is proposed. As an extension of the standard locational marginal pricing (LMP), TLMP takes into account both generation and ramping-induced opportunity costs. It eliminates the need for the out-of-the-market uplifts and guarantees full dispatch-following incentives regardless of the accuracy of the demand forecasts used in the dispatch. It is also shown that, under TLMP, a price-taking market participant has incentives to bid truthfully with its marginal cost of generation. Part II of the paper extends the theoretical results developed in Part I to more general network settings. It investigates a broader set of performance measures, including the incentives of the truthful revelation of ramping limits, revenue adequacy of the operator, consumer payments, generator profits, and price volatility under the rolling-window dispatch model with demand forecast errors. Modern distribution systems are becoming more resilient against power outages thanks to the flexible generation capacity provided by the increasing integration of distributed energy resources (DERs). Compared to utility-scale DERs, which can be directly controlled by system operators, small-scale, behind-the-meter DERs are much more difficult to coordinate despite being the vast majority. Two major obstacles to the implementation of DERs for service restoration are the coordination of behind-the-meter DERs and the management of uncertainty. In this paper, a novel distribution system restoration strategy is proposed to overcome these two obstacles. The flexibility of behind-the-meter DERs is quantified and integrated into the restoration planning models within a hierarchical structure. The model predictive control technique is employed to enable adaptive restoration planning solution adjustments to accommodate fault scenarios and forecast errors. Besides, real-time power dispatch models are proposed to maintain power balance using available DER capability. Comprehensive integration of adaptive restoration planning schemes and real-time dispatch results are achieved through a collaborative restoration framework. Energy storage systems (ESS) may provide the required flexibility to cost-effectively integrate weather-dependent renewable generation, in particular by offering operating reserves. However, since the real-time deployment of these services is uncertain, ensuring their availability requires merchant ESS to fully reserve the associated energy capacity in their day-ahead schedule. To improve such conservative policies, we propose a data-driven probabilistic characterization of the real-time balancing stage to inform the day-ahead scheduling problem of an ESS owner. This distributional information is used to enforce a tailored probabilistic guarantee on the availability of the scheduled reserve capacity via chance constrained programming, which allows a profit-maximizing participation in energy, reserve and balancing markets. The merit order-based competition with rival resources in reserve capacity and balancing markets is captured via a bi-level model, which is reformulated as a computationally efficient mixed-integer linear problem. Results show that a merchant ESS owner may leverage the competition effect to avoid violations of its energy capacity limits, and that the proposed risk-aware method allows sourcing more reserve capacity, and thus more value, from storage, without jeopardizing the real-time reliability of the power system. A routine task faced by Microgrid (MG) operators is to optimally allocate incoming power demand requests while accounting for the underlying power distribution network and the associated constraints. Typically, this has been formulated as an offline optimization problem for day-ahead scheduling, assuming perfect forecasting of the demands. In practice, however, these loads are often requested in an ad-hoc manner and the control decisions are to be computed without any foresight into future inputs. With this in view, the present work contributes to the modeling and algorithmic foundations of real-time load scheduling problem in a demand response (DR) program. We model the problem within an AC Optimal Power Flow (OPF) framework and design an efficient online algorithm that outputs scheduling decisions provided with information on past and present inputs solely. Furthermore, a rigorous theoretical bound on the competitive ratio of the algorithm is derived. The increasing integration of uncertain and volatile renewable power generation poses challenges to the operation of the interdependent electricity and gas markets. In this paper, a robust operational equilibrium solution method for the interactive markets of power and gas systems is proposed, where the bidirectional interactions include both firm energy and reserve contracting, and the impacts of the uncertainties of wind generation outputs on the two markets are characterized. The line pack as well as bidirectional flow characteristics of gas pipelines are depicted in the gas system model so as to improve its operational flexibility. To guarantee the robustness of market equilibrium against uncertainties, the power and gas market clearing models become two-stage robust ones. Column-and-constraint generation (C&CG) based and the best response algorithms are devised to clear the two markets as well as to coordinate them, respectively.
