The utilization of voltage-source converter-based multi-terminal HVDC (VSC-MTDC) technology has been envisaged as a cost-effective solution to transmit bulk renewables from multiple sending ends to receiving-end AC systems. However, with complex configurations and various types of components, the reliability evaluation of a VSC-MTDC system is more complicated than that of a conventional HVDC system. In addition, due to stochastic failures and complex operating modes, the application of a VSC-MTDC system can have a significant influence on the reliability of hybrid AC/DC power systems. This paper presents a new technique for evaluating the nodal reliability of a hybrid AC/DC power system based on the VSC-MTDC system. The proposed technique is incorporated within a multi-state model for the VSC-MTDC system. Then, an optimization model for contingency management of a hybrid AC/DC power system is formulated. The model is established based on the optimal power flow technique for a VSC-MTDC based hybrid AC/DC power system. The objective of the model is to minimize the total system cost when determining the load curtailment and generation re-dispatch results for each contingency state. Nodal reliability indices for hybrid AC/DC power systems are proposed to evaluate the reliability performance of customers at each node. Modern aircrafts are evolving toward more electric aircraft (MEA), resulting in greater reliance on the electrical system for safe flight. On-board power system of MEA integrates a large number of power electronic converters, and it is reported that semiconductor devices and electrolytic capacitors in power converters are the most vulnerable links impacted by loading conditions; thus, reliability becomes a critical concern in an MEA power system. This paper proposes a hierarchical approach for systematic reliability modeling and evaluation for the on-board power system of MEAs. It consists of three hierarchical levels (HLs): component level (HL1), subsystem level (HL2), and system level (HL3). In HL1, failure rates of power electronic components are modeled considering relevant inner structure and loading conditions; in HL2, the reliability of individual subsystems such as converters are constructed; in HL3, the system reliability is quantified based on the network architecture and reliability of the subsystems. The impacts of different parts (components/subsystems) on the overall system are assessed effectively with the identification of the vulnerable parts. This also provides a guideline for reliability enhancement by using thermal control techniques, adding redundancies or performing maintenance on the vulnerable parts to ensure the satisfactory of system reliability requirements. With high renewable power penetration, uncertainty and intermittence of renewable sources become major concerns of power system planning and operation. Large and fast wind speed change may cause great variation of active power generation, which may lead to system stability and reliability problems. The response speeds of the committed conventional generators (CGs) for frequency regulations are critical for system reliable and stable operation. The slow response of the committed CGs may result in power shortage or surplus, which may affect system frequency. This paper proposes a technique to evaluate operational reliability and efficiency problems of power systems with high wind power penetration from frequency aspect. Energy unnecessarily consumed and less supplied during system frequency control processes are modeled in detail. This paper presents a probabilistic approach in the modeling of stand-alone microgrids to predict their operational adequacy performance considering uncertainty of energy storage system (ESS), photovoltaic system (PVS) and conventional generator (CG). Instead of using the daily or hourly time step, operating period a minutely time step is considered to incorporate the effect of fast ramp up/down of system components on microgrid operating adequacy through expected energy not supplied (EENS) and expected energy not used (EENU), due to load and resource variations. A time varying state of charge (SOC) model is proposed to determine power output of an ESS in reliability modeling. The reliability of a PVS is modeled in detail based on the total cross-tied configuration (TCTC) of photovoltaic (PV) cells and arrays. The deregulation of power systems allows customers to participate in power market operation. In deregulated power systems, nodal price and nodal reliability are adopted to represent locational operation cost and reliability performance. Since contingency reserve (CR) plays an important role in reliable operation, the CR commitment should be considered in operational reliability analysis. In this paper, a CR model based on customer reliability requirements has been formulated and integrated into power market settlement. A two-step market clearing process has been proposed to determine generation and CR allocation. Customers' nodal unit commitment risk and nodal energy interruption have been evaluated through contingency analysis. With high wind-power penetration, power-system operators require accurate wind-power output from wind farms for system operation. A more accurate four-dimension wind speed model is proposed in this paper to simulate the effects of terrain and time delay of wind speed. Two coordinate transformation matrices are proposed to easily incorporate wind direction in wind-speed simulation. The effects of random failures and wake of wind turbine generators on wind-speed distribution in a wind farm are also considered in the proposed model. A sequential Monte Carlo simulation technique is developed to evaluate adequacy of power systems with wind farms using the proposed model. The modified IEEE RTS is analyzed to illustrate the models and technique. The simulation results show that those factors have significant impact on power output of a wind farm and system reliability. In a power system with high renewable power penetration, uncertain and intermittent characteristics of renewable energy resources become major concerns of system planning and operation. In such a power system, conventional thermal or hydro units have to be dispatched, shut down or started up more frequently to incorporate load, renewable resource variation and system failures. Slow ramp up (or down) of conventional units may cause energy shortage (or surplus) in power systems with high wind power penetration or in isolated micro grids with limited dispatchable capacity. This paper proposes a technique to evaluate operational reliability and energy utilization efficiency of power systems with high wind power penetration. The ramp rate of a conventional generator and energy storage system (ESS) are considered in the proposed technique. The effect of slow ramp-up rate or fast reduction of wind speed on system reliability is measured by the expected energy not supplied. A new index designated as the expected energy not used is proposed and formulated to represent energy surplus due to fast increase of wind speed and slow ramp down of conventional units. In the current power systems, some new problems have emerged regarding system reliability management due to system restructuring and the addition of renewable power generators. Because of intermittent and uncertain behaviors of renewable sources, and separation of generation system into different companies, the procedure of reliability evaluation becomes more complicated. The reliability techniques should be improved for applying in the new environment. This paper proposes an equivalent multistate generation provider (EMGP) to represent generation companies with both wind and conventional generating units. A novel approach is proposed to determine the deliverable capacity probability table (DCPT) of the equivalent multistate transmission provider (EMTP) which represents the transmission network capacity. This technique significantly reduces computation burden when both load and supply are subject to change in a power system. In a power system with high wind power penetration, reliability-based reserve expansion is a major problem of system planning and operation due to the uncertainty and fast fluctuation of wind speeds. This paper studied the impact of high wind power penetration on the system reserve and reliability from long-term planning point of view utilizing universal generating function (UGF) methods. The reliability models of wind farms and conventional generators are represented as the corresponding UGFs, and the special operators for these UGFs are defined to evaluate the customer and the system reliabilities. The effect of transmission network on customer reliabilities is also considered in the system UGF. The power output models of wind turbine generators in a wind farm considering wind speed correlation and un-correlation are developed, respectively. A reliability-based reserve expansion method is proposed to determine the conventional reserve required for power systems with high wind power penetration. Reactive power plays a significant role in power system operation. However, in reliability evaluation, attention has seldom been paid to reactive power. In conventional power system reliability evaluations, the fixed maximum and minimum values are applied as the reactive power limits of generators. Failures of reactive power sources are rarely considered. The detailed causes of network violations for a contingency are also seldom studied. Real power load shedding is usually used to alleviate network violations without considering the role of reactive power. There are no corresponding reliability indices defined to represent the reactive power shortage in the existing techniques. Reactive power shortage and the associated voltage violations due to the failures of reactive power sources are considered in this paper. New reliability indices are proposed to represent the effect of reactive power shortage on system reliability. The reliability indices due to reactive power shortages have been defined and are separated with those due to real power shortages. Reactive power limits determined by real power output of a generator using P-Q curve have been studied. A reactive power injection technique is proposed to determine possible reactive power shortage and location. The IEEE 30-bus system has been modified and analyzed to illustrate the proposed technique.
