High-frequency (HF) oil-immersed transformers with small size and light weight have been paid wide attention by researchers. Its oil–paper insulation frequently withstands HF over-voltages at frequencies of several kilohertz and above, resulting in the too early failure of oil–paper insulation. In order to investigate the effect of HF on oil–paper insulation, this article investigates the partial discharge (PD) characteristics of oil–paper insulation under HF stress. The experimental results show that a frequency-induced inflection point is existed near 10 kHz and the PD parameters of HF voltages is much higher than that ac voltages. Besides, the theoretical mechanism is expounded to interpret and understand the formation process of frequency-induced inflection points more easily. It can be found that the change in frequency causes the change in the charge decay time constant and the residual charge on the insulating surface, resulting in the formation of the frequency-induced inflection point at HF. These results might contribute to determine the characteristics of PDs between HF voltages and ac voltages. It can provide references for the research and production of HF transformers. The space charge effect of transformer insulating paper will distort its internal electric field, and its space charge effect will be more prominent under extremely complex working conditions. At present, the micromechanism of charge transport and electric field distortion characteristics of paperboard are not clear under complex working conditions. So in this article, based on the bipolar carrier transport (BCT) model and the dynamic carrier balance model, the effects of high temperature, aging degree, moisture content, and bent degree on charges accumulation in paperboard are studied under dc high voltage by numerical simulation and the measured data needed for simulation. The results show that the higher temperature strengthens the carrier migration, deepens the injection depth of the charge, and aggravates the distortion of electric field intensity in paperboard. The more extended the aging time of paperboard, the greater the internal trap density and the deeper the trap depth, which lead to charges migration difficultly. Increasing water content in the paperboard will accelerate space charges to reach a steady state, while further increasing it will slow down this process, which is related to the shallow trap getting deeper. When the critical part of paperboard is extruded, many traps are introduced, resulting in charges accumulation seriously. Recent studies have found that the surface flashover strength of oil-impregnated insulation paper can be improved by the modification of nanoparticles. To reveal the working mechanism, this paper presents an experimental study on the effects of TiO2 nanoparticles on streamer propagation process at the surface of oil-based nanofluid-impregnated insulation paper under lightning impulse voltage. The results show that the surface flashover voltage of nanofluid-impregnated insulation paper is significantly increased by 34.6%. Streamer characteristics including shape and length at the surface of oil-impregnated insulation paper were investigated using the schlieren technique. It is indicated that streamer characteristics are dramatically changed by the addition of TiO2 nanoparticles. For nanofluid-impregnated insulation paper, streamers with more but much shorter branches tend to develop into adjacent nanofluid rather than clinging to the paper compared to that for pure oil-impregnated paper. The reason responsible for the shape dissimilarity lies in the change of electrical force due to the permittivity difference between oil and paper. Furthermore, more shallow traps introduced by nanoparticles contribute to the faster surface charge dissipation of nanofluid-impregnated paper, reducing the charge accumulation at the streamer head and suppressing the electric field distortion. Thus, it is hard for streamers to develop at the surface of nanofluid-impregnated paper, resulting in an increase of surface flashover strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents a comparison between the results obtained at the application of a conservation treatment in cold high-frequency (HF) and afterglow plasma on historical papers dating in the 19th century. This article is focused on plasma biocide effects and on the impact of active species from the two types of plasma on the surface, highlighted by mechanical and physical–chemical analyses. The working gas was nitrogen and the treatment time was varied from 5 to 10 and 15 min. The result of physical–chemical analyses as SEM, pH determination, color, and tensile strength analyses, as well as microbiological investigations, converges to the conclusion that a treatment of 10 min achieves a complete decontamination, and the impact of active species is less intense in the afterglow plasma as compared to the direct discharge in cold HF plasma. This paper reports on the behavior of red and black ink from a historical printed book, subjected to a plasma discharge treatment, applied for the decontamination and cleaning of naturally aged paper. As some preliminary experiments using high-frequency (HF) plasma showed a slight fading of red ink, the study was focused on the comparison of HF cold plasma and afterglow plasma treatments in order to get conclusive information on the effect of plasma active species on the red ink. Energy Dispersive X-ray Scanning Electron Microscopy SEM-EDX and Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy FTIR-ATR analyses were used for the identification of inks and binder, while the impact of plasma on inks was assessed by SEM analysis and color determinations. The experiments have been performed on an especially designed modular equipment, allowing the samples to be subjected alternately to HF cold plasma or afterglow plasma treatment. The study proved that direct HF plasma could result in a more important deterioration at treatment duration exceeding 5 min, while in afterglow plasma, this discoloration is not observable. The color fading is imputable to the corrosion of pigment crystallites produced by direct plasma discharge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Remarkable progress in the past decade in tokamak magnetic confinement devices has made it possible to plan and design an experimental reactor, called the international thermonuclear experimental reactor (ITER), by the international collaboration. Data on plasma behavior obtained by the world-wide tokamak devices have been accumulated and analyzed in a coordinated manner which constitute a sound basis for the prediction of ITER core plasma performance. Large scale technology R&D including development, manufacturing, and testing of scalable models of major tokamak components has been also pursued that ensured technical feasibility of ITER design. Thus, ITER is now technically ready to start construction, and the governmental negotiation on its construction, operation, and exploitation activities, etc., has been underway since November 2001. After reaching agreement on important issues for ITER, the international ITER organization is expected to start in 2004, and the main purpose of its exploitation; control of significantly burning plasma will be achieved within a few decades. Aiming at the ultimate goal of steady-state operation at high plasma pressure for ITER and beyond, researches for advanced modes of plasma in tokamaks are continued by the existing experimental devices. Alternative approaches by nontokamak experimental devices in universities and national institutes have also been made in parallel. To reorganize these activities centered at ITER as a core program, the reform for more a efficient system of the entire Japanese fusion program were discussed in the special working group under the government (MEXT). This paper gives an overview of current activities and future program on magnetic confinement fusion research in Japan. The Korea superconducting tokamak advanced research (KSTAR), which is under construction at the National Fusion R&D Center, Korea Basic Science Institute, Daejeon, Korea, has the mission to develop a steady-state capable advanced superconducting tokamak to establish the scientific and technological bases for a fusion reactor. After an intensive R&D program, substantial progress of the KSTAR tokamak engineering had been made on major tokamak structures, superconducting magnets, in-vessel components, diagnostic system, heating system, and power supplies with industrial manufacturers by May 2002. The engineering design has been elaborated to the extent necessary to allow a realistic assessment of its feasibility, performance, and cost. Since May 2003, the project has been in the phase of procurement. The fabrication of main tokamak structure such as vacuum vessel, cryostat, and supporting structures is well progressed. The manufacturing work of superconducting coils is also proceeding favorably. The tokamak assembly started in July 2003 after site preparation and assembly jig. The start of commissioning is scheduled for June 2006. This paper describes the key features and engineering progress of the KSTAR tokamak and elaborates the work currently underway. The air plasma effluent of an arc-seed microwave torch is used to kill bacterial spores contained inside an envelope. The torch is operated at a 60-Hz periodic mode (with about 40% duty cycle) and runs stably at a low airflow rate (e.g., 0.3931/s). The images of plasma torch plumes show that the arc loop of the discharge prolongs from the electrodes by nearly 3 cm and microwave energizes the charge particles along the arc loop considerably. The emission spectroscopy of the torch indicates that the plasma effluent contains an abundance of reactive atomic oxygen. Bacillus cereus is chosen for the biological agent in the decontamination experiment. The experiment and the decontamination efficacy of this torch are presented. The averaged temperature inside the envelope is measured to be less than 40 [degrees]C, thus ruling out the thermal decontamination mechanism. This paper presents a radio frequency plasma equipment designed to be used for the conservation procedures, such as decontamination, cleaning, and consolidation of cellulose-based materials. Decontamination and cleaning are carried out by the low-temperature nitrogen plasma generated between two electrodes, connected to a 1.5-MHz generator. The paper consolidation is performed by coating with compatible polymers in view of long term protection. Surface analyses (color analysis and electron microscopy) were undertaken to assess the uniform display of the polymer on the paper surface. The microbiological tests made on representative samples collected from historical books attested the complete inhibition of bacteria and fungi after, at most, 7-min treatment duration, depending on the initial infestation degree.
