Load balancing in datacenter networks (DCNs) is an important and challenging task for datacenter managers. A number of sophisticated technologies have been proposed to improve load balancing performance in a complicated circumstance, i.e., with various traffic characteristics. Many approaches need a high cost to implement, such as changing switch hardware. The efficiency problem has not been well addressed. MPTCP was proposed as a low-cost approach to improve data transmission in DCNs, which uses subflows to balance workloads across multiple paths. However, current MPTCP is not satisfying, especially when there are rack-local flows or many-to-one short flows. In this article, we propose DCMPTCP to improve the efficacy of MPTCP. We gradually develop three mechanisms. First, DCMPTCP identifies rack-local traffic and eliminates unnecessary subflows to reduce the overhead. Second, DCMPTCP estimates flow length and establishes subflows in a smarter way. Third, DCMPTCP strengthens explicit congestion notification to improve the congestion control performance on inter-rack many-to-one short flows. We have implemented DCMPTCP in both the Linux kernel and ns-3 simulator. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) applications based on peer-to-peer (P2P) communications have been experiencing considerable growth in terms of number of users. To overcome filtering policies or protect the privacy of their users, most of these applications implement mechanisms such as protocol obfuscation or payload encryption that avoid the inspection of their traffic, making it difficult to identify its nature. The incapacity to determine the application that is responsible for a certain flow raises challenges for the effective management of the network. In this paper, a new method for the identification of VoIP sessions is presented. The proposed mechanism classifies the flows, in real-time, based on the speech codec used in the session. To make the classification lightweight, the behavioral signatures for each analyzed codec were created using only the lengths of the packets. Unlike most previous approaches, the classifier does not use the lengths of the packets individually. Instead, it explores their level of heterogeneity in real time, using entropy to emphasize such feature. We study the capacity scaling laws for the cognitive network that consists of the primary hybrid network (PhN) and secondary ad hoc network (SaN). PhN is further comprised of an ad hoc network and a base station-based (BS-based) network. SaN and PhN are overlapping in the same deployment region, operate on the same spectrum, but are independent with each other in terms of communication requirements. The primary users (PUs), i.e., the ad hoc nodes in PhN, have the priority to access the spectrum. The secondary users (SUs), i.e., the ad hoc nodes in SaN, are equipped with cognitive radios, and have the functionalities to sense the idle spectrum and obtain the necessary information of primary nodes in PhN. We assume that PhN adopts one out of three classical types of strategies, i.e., pure ad hoc strategy, BS-based strategy, and hybrid strategy. We aim to directly derive multicast capacity for SaN to unify the unicast and broadcast capacities under two basic principles: 1) The throughput for PhN cannot be undermined in order sense due to the presence of SaN. 2) The protocol adopted by PhN does not alter in the interest of SaN, anyway. Depending on which type of strategy is adopted in PhN, we design the optimal-throughput strategy for SaN. We show that there exists a threshold of the density of SUs according to the density of PUs beyond which it can be proven that: 1) when PhN adopts the pure ad hoc strategy or hybrid strategy, SaN can achieve the multicast capacity of the same order as it is stand-alone; 2) when PhN adopts the BS-based strategy, SaN can asymptotically achieve the multicast capacity of the same order as if PhN were absent, if some specific conditions in terms of relations among the numbers of SUs, PUs, the destinations of each multicast session in SaN, and BSs in PhN hold. The resources especially energy in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are quite limited. Since sensor nodes are usually much dense, data sampled by sensor nodes have much redundancy, data aggregation becomes an effective method to eliminate redundancy, minimize the number of transmission, and then to save energy. Many applications can be deployed in WSNs and various sensors are embedded in nodes, the packets generated by heterogenous sensors or different applications have different attributes. The packets from different applications cannot be aggregated. Otherwise, most data aggregation schemes employ static routing protocols, which cannot dynamically or intentionally forward packets according to network state or packet types. The spatial isolation caused by static routing protocol is unfavorable to data aggregation. To make data aggregation more efficient, in this paper, we introduce the concept of packet attribute, defined as the identifier of the data sampled by different kinds of sensors or applications, and then propose an attribute-aware data aggregation (ADA) scheme consisting of a packet-driven timing algorithm and a special dynamic routing protocol. Inspired by the concept of potential in physics and pheromone in ant colony, a potential-based dynamic routing is elaborated to support an ADA strategy. The performance evaluation results in series of scenarios verify that the ADA scheme can make the packets with the same attribute spatially convergent as much as possible and therefore improve the efficiency of data aggregation. We present the Secure SOurce-BAsed Loose Synchronization (SOBAS) protocol to securely synchronize the events in the network, without the transmission of explicit synchronization control messages. In SOBAS, nodes use their local time values as a one-time dynamic key to encrypt each message. In this way, SOBAS provides an effective dynamic en-route filtering mechanism, where the malicious data is filtered from the network. With SOBAS, we are able to achieve our main goal of synchronizing events at the sink as quickly, as accurately, and as surreptitiously as possible. With loose synchronization, SOBAS reduces the number of control messages needed for a WSN to operate providing the key benefits of reduced energy consumption as well as reducing the opportunity for malicious nodes to eavesdrop, intercept, or be made aware of the presence of the network. Albeit a loose synchronization per se, SOBAS is also able to provide $(7.24 \mu)$s clock precision given today's sensor technology, which is much better than other comparable schemes (schemes that do not employ GPS devices). Also, we show that by recognizing the need for and employing loose time synchronization, necessary synchronization can be provided to the WSN application using half of the energy needed for traditional schemes. Both analytical and simulation results are presented to verify the feasibility of SOBAS as well as the energy consumption of the scheme under normal operation and attack from malicious nodes. During recent years, the Internet has witnessed a rapid growth in deployment of data-driven (or swarming based) peer-to- peer (P2P) media streaming. In these applications, each node independently selects some other nodes as its neighbors (i.e., gossip- style overlay construction) and exchanges streaming data with the neighbors (i.e., data scheduling). To improve the performance of such protocol, many existing works focus on the gossip-style overlay construction issue. However, few of them concentrate on optimizing the streaming data scheduling to maximize the throughput of a constructed overlay. In this paper, we analytically study the scheduling problem in data-driven streaming system and model it as a classical mm-cost network flow problem. We then propose both the global optimal scheduling scheme and distributed heuristic algorithm to optimize the system throughput. Furthermore, we introduce layered video coding into data-driven protocol and extend our algorithm to deal with the end-host heterogeneity. The results of simulation with the real-world traces indicate that our distributed algorithm significantly outperforms conventional ad hoc scheduling strategies especially in stringent buffer and bandwidth constraints. Security has become one of the major issues for data communication over wired and wireless networks. Different from the past work on the designs of cryptography algorithms and system infrastructures, we will propose a dynamic routing algorithm that could randomize delivery paths for data transmission. The algorithm is easy to implement and compatible with popular routing protocols, such as the Routing Information Protocol in wired networks and Destination-Sequenced Distance Vector protocol in wireless networks, without introducing extra control messages. An analytic study on the proposed algorithm is presented, and a series of simulation experiments are conducted to verify the analytic results and to show the capability of the proposed algorithm. In peer-to-peer (P2P) live streaming applications such as IPTV, it is natural to accommodate multiple coexisting streaming overlays, corresponding to channels of programming. In the case of multiple overlays, it is a challenging task to design an appropriate bandwidth allocation protocol, such that these overlays efficiently share the available upload bandwidth on peers, media content is efficiently distributed to achieve the required streaming rate, as well as the streaming costs are minimized. In this paper, we seek to design simple, effective, and decentralized strategies to resolve conflicts among coexisting streaming overlays in their bandwidth competition and combine such strategies with network-coding-based media distribution to achieve efficient multioverlay streaming. Since such strategies of conflict are game theoretic in nature, we characterize them as a decentralized collection of dynamic auction games, in which downstream peers bid for upload bandwidth at the upstream peers for the delivery of coded media blocks. With extensive theoretical analysis and performance evaluation, we show that these local games converge to an optimal topology for each overlay in realistic asynchronous environments. Together with network-coding-based media dissemination, these streaming overlays adapt to peer dynamics, fairly share peer upload bandwidth to achieve satisfactory streaming rates, and can be prioritized. The paper presents a detailed discussion of various issues involved in designing a medium access control (MAC) protocol for multihop wireless networks with nodes employing multiple beam smart antennas. Multiple beam smart antennas can form several beams simultaneously and can initiate concurrent transmissions or receptions in them, thereby increasing the throughput of the bottleneck nodes. Traditional on-demand MAC protocols for omnidirectional and single beam directional antennas based on the IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF) mechanism cannot take advantage of this unique capability of multiple beam antennas as they do not facilitate concurrent transmissions or receptions by a node. This paper introduces a novel protocol, hybrid MAC .(HMAC), which enables concurrent packet reception (CPR) and concurrent packet transmission (CPT) at a node equipped with multiple beam antennas and is backward compatible with IEEE 802.11 DCF. Simulation results show the superior performance of HMAC in most ad hoc scenarios. Moreover, in some sample topologies, the throughput of HMAC is close to the theoretical maximum. The paper also presents a wireless mesh network architecture with heterogeneous antenna technologies and illustrates the advantages of employing multiple beam smart antennas and HMAC in such networks. Overlay networks are virtual networks residing over the IP network, consequently, overlay links may share hidden lower-level bottlenecks. Previous work have assumed an independent overlay model: a graph with independent link capacities. We introduce a model of overlays which incorporates correlated link capacities and linear capacity constraints (LCC) to formulate hidden shared bottlenecks; we refer to these as LCC-overlays. We define metrics to qualitatively measure overlay quality in terms of its accuracy (in representing the true network topology) and efficiency (i.e., performance). Through analysis and simulations,we show that LCC-overlay is perfectly accurate and hence enjoys much higher efficiency than the inaccurate independent overlay. We discover that even a highly restricted LCC class—node-based LCC—yields near-optimal accuracy and significantly higher efficiency. We study two network flow problems in the context of LCC-graphs: Widest-Path and Maximum-Flow. We prove that Widest-Path with LCC is NP-complete. We formulate Maximum-Flow with LCC as a linear program, and propose an efficient distributed algorithm to solve it. Based on the LCC model, we further study the problem of optimizing delay while still maintaining optimal or near-optimal bandwidth. Multicast is very efficient in distributing a large volume of data to multiple receivers over the Internet. Layered multicast helps solve the heterogeneity problem in multicast delivery. Extensive work has been done in the area of layered multicast, for both congestion control and error control. In this paper, we focus on network-supported protocols for streaming media. Most of the existing work solves the congestion control and error control problems separately and does not give an integrated efficient solution. In this paper, after reviewing related work, we introduce our proposed protocols, namely, Router-Assisted Layered Multicast (RALM) and Router-Assisted Layered FEC (RALF). The former is a congestion control protocol, whereas the latter is an error control protocol. They work under the same framework and provide an integrated solution. We also extend RALM to RALM-II, which is compatible with Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) traffic. We analyze the complexity of the proposed protocols in the network and investigate their performance through simulations. Previous work in scalable hardware distributed shared memory (DSM) multiprocessors has established the critical and dominant role that protocol processing bandwidth (or its inverse, occupancy) plays in determining overall performance in architectures with standalone memory/coherence controllers. However, with recent architectural trends toward integrated (on-chip) memory controllers and the well-known fact that processor frequency is increasing more rapidly than memory systems', we must ask whether parallel coherence processing engines (either multiple integrated protocol processors/cores or multiple protocol threads) are needed in DSM machines constructed from modern processor architectures and, if so, when. We construct a useful analytical model to give the designer insight into when parallel coherence streams will improve performance and verify our model via detailed simulation on 64-threaded microbenchmarks and parallel applications and on single-node multiprogrammed workloads. Surprisingly, and contrary to related work, we find that, in these architectures, adding a second coherence engine has almost no impact on performance. Further, for less-tuned applications that suffer from hot spots (contentious requests to the same memory line), additional engines offer no benefit whatsoever. Even with double the memory bandwidth (or channels), an additional coherence processing stream yields only slight performance improvement. Only for a special class of DSM machines employing directoryless broadcast protocols over unordered interconnects does parallel "snoop" processing offer reasonable performance improvement for communication-intensive applications. Overall, given the architectural trends, this is good news for DSM designers who want to minimize the resources necessary (protocol threads or integrated protocol processor cores for maintaining internode coherence, respectively) to create SMTp-based or multi-CMP-based scalable DSM machines using directory protocols. Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is the most popular transport layer protocol for the Internet. Due to various reasons, such as multipath routing, route fluttering, and retransmissions, packets belonging to the same flow may arrive out of order at a destination. Such packet reordering violates the design principles of some traffic control mechanisms in TCP and, thus, poses performance problems. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive and in-depth survey on recent research on packet reordering in TCP. The causes and problems for packet reordering are discussed. Various representative algorithms are examined and compared by computer simulations. The ported program codes and simulation scripts are available for download. Many research activities on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) need detailed performance statistics about protocols, systems, and applications; however, current simulation tools and testbeds lack mechanisms to report these statistics realistically and conveniently. To address this need, we have developed a WSN emulator, VMNet. VMNet emulates networked sensor nodes at the level of CPU clock cycles and executes the binary code of real applications directly. It emulates the radio channel with loss and noise as well as emulates the peripherals in sufficient detail. Moreover, VMNet takes parameter values from the real world and logs detailed runtime information of emulated nodes. Consequently, the application performance, both in response time and in power consumption, is reported realistically in VMNet, as demonstrated by our comparison studies with real sensor networks. This paper concerns the comparative performance evaluation of protocols for clustering and backbone formation in ad hoc networks characterized by a large number of resource-constrained nodes. Our aim is twofold: We provide the first simulation-based detailed investigation of techniques for clustering and backbone formation that are among the most representative of this area of ad hoc research. Second, we delve into the nature of the selected protocols to assess the effects of the "degree of localization" on their operations, i.e., how being able to execute the protocol based only on local information affects the overall protocol performance. Extensive ns2-based simulation results show that highly localized protocols are rewarded with good performance with respect to all metrics of interest which include protocol duration, energy consumption, message overhead, route length, and backbone size. A radio network (RN) is a distributed system where each station or node is a small hand-held commodity device called a station. Typically, each station has access to a few channels for transmitting and receiving messages. By RN(p, k), we denote a radio network with p stations, where each station has access to k channels. In a single-hop RN, every station is within the transmission range of every other station. Each station consumes power while transmitting or receiving a message, even when it receives a message that is not destined for it. It is extremely important that the stations consume power only when it is necessary since it is not possible to recharge batteries when the stations are on a mission. In this paper, we are interested in designing an energy-efficient protocol for permutation routing, which is one of the most fundamental problems in any distributed system. An instance of the permutation routing problem involves p stations of an RN, each storing &fracnp; items. Each item has a unique destination address which is the identity of the destination station to which the item should be sent. The goal is to route all the items to their destinations while consuming as little energy as possible. We show that the permutation routing problem of n packets on an RN(p, k) can be solved in 2n/k + (&fracpk;)² + p + 2k² slots and each station needs to be awake for at most 6n/p + 2p/k + 8k slots. When k ≪ p ≪ n, our protocol is more efficient, both in terms of total number of slots and the number of slots each station is awake compared to a previously published protocol by Nakano et al. [14]. Opportunistic routing [2], [3] has been shown to improve the network throughput, by allowing nodes that overhear the transmission and closer to the destination to participate in forwarding packets, i.e., in forwarder list. The nodes in forwarder list are prioritized and the lower priority forwarder will discard the packet if the packet has been forwarded by a higher priority forwarder. One challenging problem is to select and prioritize forwarder list such that a certain network performance is optimized. In this paper, we focus on selecting and prioritizing forwarder list to minimize energy consumption by all nodes. We study both cases where the transmission power of each node is fixed or dynamically adjustable. We present an energy-efficient opportunistic routing strategy, denoted as EEOR. Our extensive simulations in TOSSIM show that our protocol EEOR performs better than the well-known ExOR protocol (when adapted in sensor networks) in terms of the energy consumption, the packet loss ratio, and the average delivery delay.
