This paper discusses the design of a synchronous reluctance motor designed to replace a 5.5 kW industrial induction motor. End plates are axially placed at both ends of an industrial motor to fix the lamination of the rotor. It is manufactured from magnetic materials to ensure manufacturing convenience and price advantage. With its construction from magnetic materials, a lower output of the motor due to axial flux leakage is observed. This paper analyzed the drop in output caused by the axial flux leakage in the end plate constructed of magnetic material and methods to compensate for the said output drop. The first method to improve the output degradation problem was to fabricate the end plate as a non-magnetic material. This, however, was found to be inefficient due to the need for different mass production apparatus for the new material. A new method proposed in this paper involved using the end plate constructed of magnetic material but incorporating a new shape to the end plate with the saliency ratio to resolve the decreased output problem. This method converts the magnetic flux leaked in the axial direction into reluctance torque. This paper focuses on analytical methods of a finite-element method (FEM)-based edge heating system. The edge heating system plays a role in maintaining the temperature in the hot rolling process of carbon steel. Carbon steel moves along the production line and maintains the temperature by the edge heating system in the process. Power-of-the-edge heating system is transmitted to carbon steel during the process. Eddy currents are generated in carbon steel by Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction, and eddy current loss serves as a heat source to increase the temperature. Thus, there is a need for accurate electromagnetic-field analysis and thermal analysis because the eddy current path generated in carbon steel greatly affects the heat distribution in carbon steel. This multiphysics analysis requires high reliability. Accordingly, this paper presents a coupling analysis method using an FEM-based coordinate mapping method as a more accurate analytical method. This paper presents study of design characteristics with wide constant power speed range (CPSR) for electric vehicle Propulsion. Through analysis of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) control logic, design characteristic of extending CPSR is proposed. To achieve wide CPSR, center of voltage limit ellipse should be placed at cross point of current limit circle and d -axis. To analyze characteristic of voltage ellipse, four types of representative IPMSM rotor topologies are selected. Through rotor topology analysis, tendency of \phi _{f} and L_{\mathrm{ ds}} $ parameters which decide center of voltage limit ellipse is analyzed. This paper also considers shifting of voltage limit ellipse center according to change in motor speed. Reflecting the result, this paper focuses on center of voltage limit ellipse position at maximum speed, because central coordinates of high-speed range determine characteristics of CPSR. The analytical calculation of magnetic forces is currently an interesting alternative to the time-consuming 3-D finite-element method due to their high accuracy and low computational cost. In this paper, a new semi-analytical solution for determining the levitation force of the repulsive magnetic guidance that has a significant role for controlling and developing high precision magnetic levitation positioning system is presented. An important result is that this new expression, compared with other known equations in the literature, considers the position dependence of the magnetic levitation force over the whole travel range. In order to derive this force, the magnetic field of the permanent magnet is first calculated by introducing and solving the magnetic scalar potential. Taking Lorentz force law into consideration, the proposed equation is finally derived. This semi-analytical equation is suitable for designing and optimizing the magnetic guidance. Furthermore, it can also be used for developing other ironless actuators. This paper proposes a flux-intensifying permanent magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance motor (FI-PMa-SynRM) using surface-inset permanent magnet (PM) instead of embedded PM in the rotor. The proposed FI-PMa-SynRM employs a small amount of PM that is inset on the rotor surface facing $d$ -axis instead of facing $q$ -axis as in common PMa-SynRMs. It also differs from conventional flux-intensifying interior PM motor, where the PM is embedded inside the rotor. The proposed motor enables making use of the arrangements of two types of flux barriers (FBs): the cutoff FB and the magnet FB, collectively referred to the outer FBs, to enhance the torque output and reduce the torque ripple. The first objective in this paper is to explain the principles of the proposed FI-PMa-SynRM, and the second is to analyze the proposed technique for enhancement of the torque output with small PM volume while keeping the lowest possible torque ripple. This paper presents a research work on the electromagnetic loss modeling and demagnetization analysis for a high-speed permanent magnet machine (HSPMM). The iron loss is estimated by improved modeling considering harmonics and rotational magnetic field effects to achieve high precision; rotor eddy current loss is researched and comprehensively investigated using finite-element method (FEM). The auxiliary slot and PM beveling are also proposed to reduce the rotor eddy current loss for machine at high-speed operation. Temperature-dependent PM demagnetization modeling is utilized in HSPMM FEM analysis to investigate machine performance due to temperature variation, while optimized rotor structures are proposed and comparatively researched by FEM to improve the machine anti-demagnetization capability in harsh conditions. The HSPMM temperature is estimated based on the calculated loss results and machine computational fluid dynamic modeling. This paper discusses a motor that was designed to satisfy the size constraints of system by using ferrite magnet and has the same performance as rare-earth magnet motor. In general, the size of the motor is increased in order to meet the same performance of motor using a ferrite magnet, because of its very low energy density compared to the rare-earth magnet. In order to compensate for these drawbacks, spoke structures capable of generating maximum magnetic flux at the same rotor size have been frequently studied. However, the spoke type motor structure has a drawback that demagnetization occurs in a magnet-specific portion. However, because it affects harmonics of the airgap flux density by demagnetization, it affects mechanical torque ripple and vibration. Therefore, in this paper, the changed air-gap flux density due to the demagnetization phenomenon and the changed mechanical vibration are analyzed by the finite-element method. In addition, we proposed an optimal rotor structure that can reduce the demagnetization phenomenon of magnets in spoke interior permanent magnet synchronous motor. The shape of rotor bar is important in squirrel cage induction motor (SCIM) performance, such as starting torque, operating torque, and operating efficiency. Some designs of increasing starting torque of motor may decrease motor efficiency. Moreover, some designed shapes of bar are so complicated to be manufactured. In this paper, the design is focused on the simple inclination of conventional shape of bar with keeping the rotor bar area constant. The effects of rotor bar inclination on starting torque, operating torque, and operating efficiency in SCIM are analyzed. The results showed that there is optimum inclination of rotor bar to improve all the performances together. An application to the 3.4 kW SCIM showed that the starting torque is increased from 17.53 to 17.64 \text N\cdot \text m , the operating torque from 11.19 to 11.26~\text N\cdot \text m , and the operating efficiency from 94.18% to 94.81%. A novel hybrid-flux permanent-magnet (PM) generator, which has both axial flux and radial flux, is proposed. An axial-flux PM generator is designed by a reluctance network method and the 3-D finite element method. Using these results, this paper proposes a radial-flux and hybrid-flux machine, whose main dimensions are chosen to the same values as a commercialized one. The proposed hybrid-flux machine has the largest output power per volume. The power density of the proposed generator is 9.4 times larger than that of the commercialized one. Topology optimization techniques are very promising methods, because they allow one to obtain an initial conceptual structure starting with minimal information on the design object. This paper proposes a novel topology optimization method that takes into account an asymmetrical rotor structure. The phase angle of stator current is not considered in the topology optimization process, thanks to an asymmetrical rotor. This paper designs the rotor topology of a permanent magnet synchronous generator. This paper investigates the performance of a magnetic lead screw (MLS) equipped with skewed arc magnets. Skewed arc magnets are adopted to approximate the helical ones, because the latter is hard to realize. Although similar method had been proposed in the previous literature, discussion about the parameters of the skewed arc magnets was insufficient and little attention was paid to the gear ratio of the resultant MLS. In this paper, the principle of approximation by skewed arc magnets is proposed and discussed, and the performance of the MLS with skewed arc magnets is evaluated and compared with the ideal MLS in terms of thrust force, torque, and gear ratio. It is highlighted that the gear ratio is the fundamental indicator of the MLS’s performance, besides the thrust force and torque. It is shown that the gear ratio of MLS is mainly affected by the reference angle and the arc angle of skewed arc magnets, and optimal values for the two angles are obtained. In addition, the effects of the magnet magnetization on thrust force and torque are analyzed. In this paper, an 18-slot/26-pole vernier permanent magnet synchronous machine (VPMSM) with coil pitch of two slot pitches is proposed based on a nine-slot/18-flux-modulation-pole/26-pole VPMSM with concentrated tooth-coil windings. Compared with the original VPMSM, the number of slots is doubled and the phase winding connection is adjusted to reduce the space harmonic content, the phase inductance, and hence, improve the power factor. This paper shows that the proposed VPMSM increases power factor from 0.73 to 0.95 with better torque and flux-weakening capability. Through numerical simulations and calibrated experiments, the aim of the work presented in this paper is placed on the development of a polarity changeable magnetizing platform for a rotary magnetic encoder using a permanent magnet and thin silicon steel plate. Parameter studies are conducted via finite-element analyses to obtain optimized geometric design parameters for the magnetizer, leading to desirable magnetic flux density and effective magnetized patterns on the magnetic media. In practical motors, static eccentricity and dynamic eccentricity (DE) (mixed eccentricity) appear rarely with the developed manufacturing techniques nowadays. Curved eccentricity takes up most of the eccentricity. However, the motor is dynamic eccentric in axial cross section when in curved eccentricity. Eccentricity is bound to cause unbalanced magnetic pull (UMP), whereas the study of dynamic UMP under DE in this paper has rarely been mentioned before. According to relevant past papers, UMP is deemed to be invariable numerically. Dynamic UMP is put forward formally for the first time. In addition, UMP during the starting period is a function with time, relatively larger than the steady-state UMP according to the calculation in this paper, namely, UMP during starting period is of greater significance in motor deflection calculation than that during the steady state. In this paper, the influences of design parameters on the on-load demagnetization behavior of a switched flux hybrid magnet memory machine (SF-HMMM) are evaluated, which aims to provide a useful design guideline to avoid this performance degradation. The machine topology and on-load demagnetization phenomenon are described, respectively. Furthermore, some key design parameters are selected to optimize to elevate the operating point of the low coercive force (LCF) permanent magnets (PMs). Then, some geometric modifications are suggested to alleviate the on-load demagnetization effects. In this paper, on the basis of a conventional 12-stator-coils/17-rotor-teeth (12/17) flux-switching permanent magnet (PM) (FSPM) machine and a 6/17 V-shaped FSPM machine, a novel 6/17 multi-tooth FSPM machine with a pair of magnets located in the upper apex of stator tooth is proposed. Then, four multi-tooth topologies sharing the same 6-stator-coils but with different rotor teeth combinations, namely, 6/17, 6/10, 6/11, and 6/13, are compared by the 2-D finite element analysis (2-D-FEA). The FEA-predicted results reveal the optimal combinations of stator coils and rotor teeth should be 6/17 for high-performance multi-tooth machines. Thereafter, an optimal design criterion of multi-tooth FSPM machines for the combinations of stator coils and rotor teeth is proposed. Afterward, electromagnetic performance evaluation between the 6/17 V-shaped and 6/17 multi-tooth machines is conducted, in terms of back electromotive force (back EMF), electromagnetic torque, cogging torque, phase inductance, unbalanced magnetic force (UMF), torque/magnet ratio, and efficiency. The comparative results indicate that the proposed 6/17 multi-tooth machine is superior to the V-shaped one, since it exhibits much higher torque/magnet ratio, larger torque, lower inductance, and much lower UMF, though the cogging torque and total harmonic distribution of phase back EMF are unfavorably larger. The aim of this paper is to introduce and to study the performance of some multiscale finite-element formulations for the eddy current problem in laminated iron in two dimensions. The case of the main magnetic flux that is parallel to the laminates and assumed to be perpendicular to the plane of projection is considered. Exact solutions of relevant boundary value problems for eddy currents are presented. Multiscale formulations based on the magnetic vector potential (MVP) and the single component current vector potential and on a mixed formulation of the MVP and the current density are discussed. An approach for a multiscale formulation with the MVP is constructed at the best based on an exact solution. The associated weak form of the multiscale finite-element method (MSFEM) is presented. Similar to the MVP, multiscale formulations for the single component current vector potential and for a mixed formulation with the MVP and the current density are studied. This paper does not present a mathematical analysis of the MSFEM for eddy currents in laminates. The performance of the MSFEM is studied by numerous numerical experiments of different examples. This paper covers the topics exact integration versus averaging of coefficients, stability of the MSFEM in a particular case, p-refinement of micro-shape functions and standard finite-element polynomials and edge effect. Simulations show the capability of MSFEM to approximate eddy currents in iron laminates efficiently and accurately. In this paper, the characteristics analysis of the surface-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous motor is carried out using the method of reflecting the axial leakage magnetic flux into the 2-D finite-element analysis (2-D FEA), and the result is discussed. For the method of projecting the axial leakage flux on the 2-D plane, the permeance coefficient was introduced. By using the proposed method, the parameters such as d- and q-axes inductance and linkage flux for d- and q-axes equivalent circuit analysis were calculated, and the characteristics analysis was performed. In this paper, the air-gap flux density components in the eccentric surface-mounted phase modulation (SPM) machines are predicted analytically. In the provided model, the slotting effects of the armature are taken into account. In the modeling process, conformal transformations (CTs) are employed to obtain an equivalent concentric slotless machine for the eccentric slotted PM machine. To satisfy the condition of using CTs, i.e., having a Laplace equation, the PMs are replaced with an equivalent current sheet at the surface of the rotor. The approach of finding this current sheet is approved by the basis of the electromagnetic theory. One of the contributions of this paper is that the provided model is capable of modeling the eccentric SPM machines with any PM magnetization pattern by means of CTs. Substituting the predicted air-gap flux density components in the Maxwell stress tensor, the machine unbalanced magnetic force and its cogging torque are computed. On the wheel-rail supported hybrid railway system, the linear synchronous motor (LSM) for very high-speed transit must be a system that can maintain a large air gap, and the maximum vertical displacement must be taken into consideration in designing the LSM. As such, this paper designs two small-scale LSM models that produce equal output power—one with the normal-conducting magnet and the other with the superconducting magnet. In addition, this paper conducts a comparative analysis of the various characteristics by applying the electromagnetic numerical analysis method. Furthermore, this paper manufactures two small-scale LSM prototypes which have the normal-conducting magnet and the superconducting magnet, while also conducting a no-load and load test. Vernier permanent magnet (VPM) machines for direct-drive applications are receiving more and more attention due to its small pulsating torque, high torque density at low rotation speed. This paper proposes a novel VPM machine, which has two stators and a sandwiched rotor. The outer stator is a conventional stator with three-phase windings and semi-closed slots, and the inner stator has an iron core and PMs mounted on the surface of it. The rotor has a consequent-pole structure with Halbach-array PMs. In this paper, the operation principles and the feasible slot-pole combinations of the proposed machine are analyzed. Moreover, to verify the superior performances of the proposed VPM machine, it is compared with a regular VPM machine in terms of back electromotive force, average torque, pulsating torque, power factor, efficiency, and overload capabilities. This paper presents a non-destructive evaluation study on a radiator with cooling fins as a kind of complex shaped specimen. An eddy current testing method, namely multi-frequency excitation and spectrogram method, was employed to detect a removal of radiator cooling fin. Experimental results brought remarkable signal when a fin was removed. Furthermore, the authors discuss the relation between the fin signal and specimen thickness, and concludes the availability for the estimation of thickness of radiator structures. In this paper, a changeable winding brushless DC (BLDC) motor for the expansion of the speed region is described. The changeable winding BLDC motor is driven by a large number of phase turns at low speeds and by a reduced number of turns at high speeds. For this reason, the section where the winding changes is very important. Ideally, the time at which the windings are to be converted should be same as the time at which the voltage changes. However, if this timing is not exactly synchronized, a large current is generated in the motor, and the demagnetization of the permanent magnet occurs. In addition, a large torque ripple is produced. Typical vibrational harvesters using a high-permeability beam in a cantilever configuration exploit the field generated by a couple of counter-polarized permanent magnets facing the vibrating strip at the free end. Such a canonical position of the magnets does not permit one, however, to highlight the importance of the bias field pattern. A proof of concept archetype is realized in this paper, by which the influence of the magnetization profile along the length of the vibrating ferromagnetic beam is put in evidence. It demonstrates, in particular, that significant variations, even by a factor of three, of the output power can be obtained by a modification of the magnets arrangement. We discussed in this paper the behavior of a cantilever-based generator, where an Fe–Co high-permeability beam is made to vibrate inside an inhomogeneous magnetic field generated by permanent magnets, whose arrangement can modified in order to vary the magnetization profile along the vibrating laminae. The effects of such a profile are measured and analyzed by means of a simple 2-D numerical model, showing that the generated power can be enhanced by conveniently acting on the magnets configuration. The measurements show that, with a host acceleration of $5g$ rms ( g = 9.81$ m/ \text{s}^{2} ), a 6.72 mW time average output power is obtained for operating frequencies around 60 Hz. This paper deals with an analytical model of the virtual air gap (VAG) function in order to define design rules when this technique is used inside complex devices. The establishment of those design rules constitutes the main originality of the developments presented in this paper, which are about a single-phase magnetic core. It is based on the definition of a nonlinear reluctance network that takes simultaneously into account the effects of dc and ac magnetic flux components in the disturbed area that contains the VAG. In this paper, an analytical torque ripple model for interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) is introduced at first, which can be used to estimate the torque ripple. Then, the inductance variation due to magnetic saturation is analyzed through experimental investigations, which demonstrates that magnetic saturation has a great influence on the inductances, and hence the torque ripple minimization performance. Thus, this paper proposes an online parameter identification approach to estimate the inductances and incorporates them into the torque ripple minimization. The proposed parameter identification approach can estimate the dq-axis inductances accurately such that it brings significant torque ripple minimization improvement for IPMSMs. Numerical and experimental investigations have been conducted to validate the proposed approach based on a laboratory IPMSM. This paper proposes a novel hybrid excitation vernier permanent magnet machine (HE-VPM). The characteristics of the proposed machine are: 1) the PMs are embedded in the stator teeth, which is helpful for the heat dissipation; 2) the rotor is salient structure without PMs and windings, which ensures the reliability of high-speed operation; 3) the nonoverlapping concentrated winding shortens the end-connection, and improves the torque density, 4) only half of the stator teeth possess PMs, and the total amount of PMs are decreased; and 5) the dc current are injected to the armature coils, therefore, the exciting field can be adjusted flexibly. In this paper, the electromagnetic performance, including back electromotive force, torque, etc. are analyzed with finite element analysis. The results show that the proposed machine exhibits flexible field adjustment capability, which may be suitable for applications requiring wide speed range operation. Besides, it is found that, compared with the existing pure sinusoidal phase current, higher torque density can be obtained with dc-biased phase current under constant stator copper loss. In nuclear fusion devices, numerical algorithms to model the plasma behavior and all of the other field sources are needed for the control system, especially when plasma instabilities are present. The control measures have to be taken in very strict time intervals (real-time problems); therefore, the involved codes have to be very fast. These days, suitable identification procedures are mainly based on information coming from the magnetic measurements, typically in the axisymmetric frame. Unfortunately, the presence of iron materials strongly increases the complexity of the identification, for both the lack of linear behavior and 2-D hypothesis. This paper proposes fast and effective iron modeling useful for practical real-time applications; the iron is modeled by means of an integral approach, whereas an inverse problem that relates the available magnetic measurements with the unknown currents and magnetizations is solved in a fast way by means of modern graphical-processing unit architectures. This paper presents an analytical solution of the eddy currents in the permanent magnets (PMs) in the axial flux PM synchronous machine using a coupled solution of Maxwell’s equations and electric circuit network. This is based on calculating the axial field in an accurate way on the surface of the PM. This method is able to consider the effect of armature field and slots. The eddy currents are obtained by imposing this solution on the PM which is modeled by a simple electric network. This network is composed of simple resistances and inductances. The inductances are used to model the reaction field effect of the eddy currents flowing through the PM and also the skin effect. To show this effect, the machine is excited with different sources at different speeds. In addition, a variant of the model is made that neglects the inductances, in order to show in which conditions this low-frequency approximation is acceptable. It is concluded from this paper that inclusion of the reaction field is necessary when the machine is excited by a pulsewidth modulated (PWM) current, while for a sinusoidal excitation, the reaction field effect has minor contributions to the total eddy losses. In addition, the reaction field has major influence at higher speeds rather than lower speeds for PWM injection. In conclusions, for a preliminary design, the resistance model without the reaction field computation would be enough for the calculation of the PM losses. The circuit model is also capable of obtaining the solution with PM segmentation. In this paper, different PM segments were studied from the circuit model and the finite-element (FE) model point of view. Compared with the FE model, the circuit model has the advantage of flexibility in geometrical machine parameters, less CPU time, and accurate results for the PM losses up to 10%. This paper investigates the partial irreversible demagnetization characteristics of magnets in flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machines. Two different partial demagnetization mechanisms in the FSPM machines are modeled and demonstrated. The 2-D finite-element analysis (FEA) results for a baseline 10 kW 15 kr/min ferrite FSPM machine verify the validity of the proposed partial demagnetization model. Performance degradation due to demagnetization is evaluated for the baseline machine based on the FEA results. This paper also proposes a novel design to enhance the demagnetization withstand capability. This research reveals the most vulnerable region of the magnet to irreversible demagnetization in the FSPM machines. This paper presents a novel flux-modulated type dual-axis motor that has two mechanical inputs/outputs, since it consists of a stator, a permanent magnet rotor, and a modulating rotor. Furthermore, since the dual-axis motor has a function the same as a planetary type magnetic gear, it can transmit torque with arbitrary gear ratio and divide mechanical input/output into two rotors without any mechanical contact. In this paper, first, conventional and proposed flux-modulated type dual-axis motors are optimized and compared using finite-element analysis. Accurate modeling of three-phase asymmetric (three- and five-limb) transformers is still a challenge. In this paper, a method for the calculation of the major hysteresis loop for three-phase asymmetric transformers is proposed. All necessary information can be obtained from measurements taken at the transformer terminals without breaking the connections and using only standard tests. For illustration and validation, the method is applied to Wye–wye and Wye–delta connections for three-limb and five-limb transformers, but the method is applicable to all transformer connections. The obtained hysteresis loops are implemented in three-phase dual-reversible models. Simulation results are validated with laboratory experiments. This paper presents a magnetic safety evaluation of the static magnetic field produced by magnetic floors with permanent magnet properties utilized in the construction industry. The magnetic floors analyzed in this paper are composed by a concentration of 85% of isotropic strontium (Sr) ferrite powder mixed with chlorinated polyethylene. The magnetic floors are magnetized and tested in the laboratory to measure the magnetic field levels in different regions of the magnetic floors and magnetic subfloors. Finite-element (FE) simulations are carried out to compute the magnetic field produced by magnetic floors. The numerical results and laboratory tests are compared and analyzed. Values of the magnetic field between 2 and 50 mT are computed and measured in different regions of magnetic floors. Finally, the static magnetic field levels obtained in the magnetic floors are compared with the permitted magnetic field values for different electronic devices, pacemakers, and other common objects utilized by persons in buildings. The results obtained in this paper show that magnetic floors are safe, and they can be employed in buildings without putting in risk electronic devices or persons with pacemakers. A coaxial magnetic gear (CMG) consisting of an inner ring, outer ring, and flux modulator exhibits relatively large torque density at low operating cost and low noise level. To guide the selection of soft magnetic materials for the flux modulator, this paper first incorporates the Jiles–Atherton model within a finite-element (FE) framework. The influence of nonlinear magnetic properties on end-effect losses (magnetic flux leakage and fringing) is then investigated with the objective of maximizing the pullout torque. For flux modulators whose initial magnetic permeability and saturation flux density exceed certain threshold value, the pullout torque of a CMG becomes insensitive to magnetic properties and end-effect losses can be efficiently calculated from a 2-D FE model together with a constant torque reduction ratio. This paper presents a systematic torque surface method that can decouple the analysis of average torque and torque ripples. As an efficient non-destructive testing method, magnetic flux leakage (MFL) has been widely used for damage detection in ferromagnetic materials. The magnetic dipole theory is a traditional method to calculate the magnetic leakage field. In this paper, the magnetic leakage field functions of a slot in a 2-D infinity plate are obtained using the magnetic dipole theory. Equations of the magnetic leakage field are converted into the convolution of two other functions. Spatial spectral equations of the MFL are developed according to the convolution theorem using the Fourier transform (FT) method. The results are analytical functions different from other numerical methods, such as the discrete FT and fast FT methods, and the calculation speed is fast. The results show that the $y$ -component of the magnetic leakage field has 90° phase shift with the $x$ -component. This result has clear physical significance compared with the traditional MFL equations using the magnetic dipole theory. Different spatial spectral curves for different defects are presented in this paper. Since there is a sinc function for the width value in the equation, the width value can be deduced from the first zero-crossing point in the spatial spectrum curves. A new method is proposed to determine the width value using the relationship $w =1/f_{s}$ , where $f_{s}$ is the first zero cross point. The purpose of this paper is to investigate a novel flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machine that is amenable for high-speed operation. The low-pole topology of high-speed machine is favorable to minimize fundamental frequency requirement. The lowest possible three-phase topology of the FSPM machine, with six stator slots and four rotor poles (6/4), has unacceptably large second-order harmonic distortion in the flux linkage and severe cogging torque in its conventional single-stator–single-rotor form. To resolve these challenges, a novel dual-stator structure is proposed that eliminates the even-order harmonics in the flux linkage. Harmonic distortion and cogging torque are notably reduced in the proposed machine. The principles of operation and design methods are described in this paper. The properties of the proposed dual-stator 6/4 FSPM machine are compared with a conventional 6/4 FSPM machine and a conventional 12/10 FSPM machine for a 5 kW, 15 000 r/min design. Comparison results gathered from 3-D finite-element analysis demonstrate that the proposed dual-stator 6/4 FSPM machine achieves significantly better flux linkage, back EMF, and cogging torque than the conventional 6/4 design and better efficiency than the conventional 12/10 FSPM machine. In this paper, a new method for achieving absolute position information is proposed. As opposed to the common approach of matching magnetoresistive (MR) sensors to specific pole pitch patterns on medium, this paper validates the possibility of mismatching between the two with the same element spacing in MR sensors over pole pitch variation from 1.1 to 1.3 mm in two-row magnetic patterns. The first row is the incremental row, which has the same 1 mm pole pitch as the sensor. The second row serves as the absolute row with the tweaked pole pitch pattern. With different pole pitches in the two rows, an offset between each pole exists before the two different pole pitches reach their common multiple. Through analyzing Lissajous profiles resulted from both rows, it is found that the relation between two rows on each position is unique, and hence can be used as a mean to determine absolute position. This paper proposes a new design of SPOKE-type PM brushless direct current (BLDC) motor without using neodymium PM (Nd-PM). The proposed model has an improved output characteristic as it uses the properties of the magnetic flux effect of the SPOKE-type motor with an additional pushing assistant magnet and subassistant magnet in the shape of spoke. In this paper, ferrite PM (Fe-PM) is used instead of Nd-PM. First, the air-gap flux density and backelectromotive force (BEMF) are obtained based on the field model. Second, the analytical expressions of magnet field strength and magnet flux density are obtained in the air gap produced by Fe-PM. The developed analytical model is obtained by solving the magnetic scalar potential. Finally, the air-gap field distribution and BEMF of SPOKE-type motor are analyzed. In previous studies on precise computation methods of iron loss, it has been shown that the 1-D dynamic magnetic field analysis with hysteresis in post-processing is effective. However, there is a problem in that the hysteresis makes the convergence of nonlinear iterations unstable. This paper proposes a stabilization method for the 1-D dynamic magnetic field analysis with hysteresis. The proposed method is characterized as an approach for improving the initial value and the step size in the Newton–Raphson method. The results of this paper showed that the convergence characteristic of the nonlinear 1-D magnetic field analysis for variety flux density waveforms of each part in an electric motor is improved using the proposed method. This paper presents an analytical calculation method for the computation of the magnetic vector potential of an axisymmetric solenoid in the presence of an iron shield and a ferromagnetic core. The proposed method can be used as a fast analytical computation technique for accelerating the design optimization process of the solenoid systems. In this paper, the analysis of the current carrying coil in the presence of the ferromagnetic materials is treated as a boundary value problem. The solution approach is based on partitioning the solution domain into distinct regions. The general form of the solution to Maxwell’s equation in each region along with the corresponding boundary conditions is obtained using the Fourier analysis and the separation of variables. The final solution to the boundary value problem is constituted by considering the continuity of the magnetic vector potential, as well as the magnetic field, on the interfaces between the regions. Finally, the proposed analytical computation method is applied on an electromagnetic actuator. In this paper, a 3-D multiphysics finite-element study of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) reed magnetic sensors is presented. This paper employs several governing equations to simulate the MEMS reed sensors, calculate their magnetostatic body force, and track the resultant mechanical displacements. The MEMS beams used are trilayer gold/Ni/gold, and the sensing ranges of the sensors are in milli-Tesla. The results in this paper point to an optimal sensor design, which is then fabricated and verified by the experimental tests. This paper presents a general performance map of the MEMS reed sensors, illustrating their performance under various field conditions. This paper presents a novel analysis and a design method of surface-mounted permanent magnet (SPM) machines with fractional slot concentrated windings (FSCWs) for a given constant power region ratio. The characteristics of working points in the constant power region are analyzed, and a method of quantifying important parameters, magnet flux, and synchronous inductance is proposed. According to the analysis, the design method of SPM machines with the FSCWs and notes is provided. Based on the proposed method, a double-layer 20-pole/24-slot SPM machine is taken as an example and designed. The designed machine is analyzed by the finite element method (FEM), and the constant power experiment is carried out on the prototype manufactured as design. In this paper, we proposed and verified the feasibility of a unique wireless power transfer structure called a rail transformer to drive multiple low-power devices such as electronic shelf label (ESL) devices. The rail transformer is composed of a rectangular, circular-shaped transmitting yoke and two transmitting coils to provide wireless power. Multiple receiving yokes coupled with receiving coils are installed across the elongated edge of the transmitting yoke. It can be driven by low-frequency ac power at 50/60 Hz. In our prototype, the transmitting yoke is 900 mm long and 15 mm wide. We obtained the minimal induced wireless power, and the voltage was $\sim 61$ mW and 3.5 V, which is sufficient to drive a typical ESL device. By designing a nonuniform gap thickness between the transmitting and the receiving yokes at the specific locations, we improved the uniformity of the induced power for multiple ESL devices. In order to design a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), the inductance must be computed. In this paper, the flux concentrating PMSM (FCPMSM) is introduced. Calculating the inductance is difficult because of the complex structure of the rotor. Because the rib and the bridge consist of an iron core, they have nonlinear characteristics. In order to obtain the effective value of the inductance, nonlinear characteristics must be considered in a magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC). In this paper, to calculate the inductance of an FCPMSM, the relative permeance of the rotor was analyzed. Then, the dq-axis MEC, including the nonlinear magnetic reluctance, was created using the flux line. This paper investigates the rotor losses of coaxial magnetic gears (CMGs) with surface-mounted permanent magnets. The iron losses and PM eddy current losses that occurred in the two rotors of an existing gear are calculated and analyzed by the finite-element method. Using magnetic flux barriers in the outer rotor, a novel rotor structure for CMGs is proposed to reduce the rotor losses, in which subharmonics are considered. A 1-D magnetic permeability model is also introduced to understand the principle of reducing the main subharmonics. Then the outer rotor losses of the existing gear and proposed gear are compared. This paper deals with the optimal design of a new synchronous motor particularly suitable for electric vehicles. The unique advantage of this motor is its possibility to realize field weakening at high speeds, which is the most important demand for such drives. The main design goal is to identify the dimensions of certain crucial regions of the machine in order to avoid saturation of the iron and to minimize the mass to volume ratio, while simultaneously maximizing the torque. This paper concerns the detection of local magnetic induction in peripheral regions of transformer cores. Induction distributions are important for the interpretation of local losses and magnetostriction. Most authors use advanced numerical modeling-like FEM for the computation of local induction values. However, effective estimations tend to be impossible due to non-linearity, extreme anisotropy, and complex effects of hysteresis. As an alternative to FEM, the conventional method for local measurements is to use arrays of single-turn search coils. However, this method is laborious, and it affects the measured values in strong ways due to the thickness of the arranged wires and artifacts from the drilled holes. This paper presents a novel approach for peripheral core regions based on measurements with a tangential induction coil, i.e., a field coil with a ferromagnetic core. The sensor was tested on a model transformer core stacked from three packages of different widths of grain-oriented electrical steel, for the nominal induction of 1.7 T. As an advantageous effect, the sensor does not cause any interlaminar air gaps and detects the amplitude of the induction not only in planar, but also in lateral positions. Results from \boldsymbol \sim 100 measuring positions are presented. They show that the induction distribution is inhomogeneous with variations up to \boldsymbol \sim 15 %. High induction values were measured in the widest main package of the core, in contrast to much lower ones in the outer packages. On the other hand, the corners, yokes, and T-joints show much more uniformly flux distribution. This paper investigates the effects of loading and slot harmonic on radial magnetic forces in a low-speed permanent magnet (PM) machine with non-overlapping concentrated windings. Vibration level of the PM machines with concentrated windings can be potentially higher compared with that of the traditional machines with distributed windings. It is mainly due to the presence of low-order spatial harmonics in radial force density distribution. In this paper, magnetic flux density distribution in the air-gap of a 120-slot/116-pole machine is computed using finite-element method. Maxwell’s stress tensor method is then employed to calculate radial and tangential forces in the air-gap. Flux density and radial and tangential force distributions are studied in different loading conditions and the effect of d - and q -axis currents are investigated. It is shown how the lowest mode of vibration is produced by different harmonic pairs in the flux density. It is found that d -axis current significantly changes the amplitude of the lowest spatial harmonic of the radial force distribution and consequently the vibration behavior. The main reason is found to be the changes in the amplitude of the slot harmonic, which is heavily affected by loading. Experimental tests are carried out to compare the vibration level of a PM generator supplying resistive, inductive, and capacitive loads. At present, most of the linear generators contain a heavy translator for converting wave power from the ocean into electrical power. As the translator is connected to the buoy, the buoy dynamic performance is reduced by the large mass and, as a result, low velocity of the translator would degrade the electricity generation of the linear generator. This problem has been minimized by the new design in this paper, where the translator is clipped off at first and split into two separate portions to minimize its weight. The secondary stator is magnetically coupled with a special m-shaped main stator which is used to flow the necessary magnetic flux. The weight of the proposed translator is 21.82% lower than that of conventional one and 49.1% by using a recently available permanent magnet with higher specifications. The finite-element method is applied in ANSYS simulation environment for the analysis and comparison between the proposed and conventional designs. Different parameters of the conventional and the proposed linear generator have been discussed in this paper. The simulation results show that the proposed design can generate the same amount of electricity as the existing one with almost half of the translator size. According to the mathematical model, it is understood that the dynamics of the translator would be higher for its lower mass and vice versa. The results of the 3-D finite-element method electromagnetic analysis of the constant speed variable output permanent magnet synchronous motor including the rotor retaining plate structure confirmed that the eddy current flow was induced in the rotor part. Eddy current flows from the permanent magnet to the rotor retaining plate, and it was found that there is induced voltage that generates eddy currents in the retaining plate from the aspect of eddy-current distribution. The eddy current flow from the permanent magnet to the retaining plate is related to the change in magnetic resistance during rotation and is also related to the effect of slot harmonics on the air-gap magnetic flux density. In this paper, the characteristics of the eddy current flow in the rotor assembly were investigated when the retaining plate is included for various slot combinations. The eddy-current generation according to the slot combination is analyzed and the cause of such tendency was investigated. Furthermore, from the pattern of eddy-current formation, it was noted that the aperiodic pole–slot combination models may have a larger eddy-current loss increase when combined with the retaining plate.
