In this paper, a unique meshless method using the radial point interpolation method (RPIM) for the analysis of electromagnetic fields is proposed. In electromagnetic field analysis, treatment of the interfaces between different mediums is important. In this paper, a unique approach is proposed, which is to consider the material constants to be functions of space. Based on this condition, the governing equation of the electromagnetic field is derived and the equations are discretized using the RPIM. In the case of designing high-speed surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM), the rotor retaining sleeve is inserted into the rotor to prevent the permanent magnet’s damage. It is quite an efficient way to consider manufacturability, but the sleeve becomes the major source of ohm loss in high-speed operation. In this paper, the high-speed motor for a turbo blower at the rating of 100 kW, 20000 r/min was introduced. To improve its efficiency, the retaining sleeve’s optimal design was needed. For this, parametric analysis on the shape of the retaining sleeve was carried out in a different type of motor. Within a range that meets the mechanical safety, sleeve designs have been changed. The effect of changing design variables of the sleeve was studied. This paper presents the optimized sleeve’s advantages in electrical efficiency from the results of the electromagnetic finite element analysis software. This paper focuses on the security condition of line worker during the implementation of helicopter live-line work by platform method on 1000 kV ultrahigh voltage (UHV) transmission lines. First, a model of helicopter live-line work is presented, and the electric field distribution of line worker when performing live-line work on 1000 kV UHV transmission lines is analyzed. Then, the capacitances between helicopter live-line work platform, transmission lines, and ground are obtained by energy method, and an equivalent circuit model is presented to analyze the current characteristic of bonding procedure. At the end of this paper, an experiment of helicopter live-line work is performed, the electric field distributions of line worker and the discharge current are measured and compared with simulation results, which will be used to judge the security condition of line worker and the feasibility of helicopter live-line work by platform method on 1000 kV UHV transmission lines. In this paper, different ways to compute electromagnetic source fields for non-meshed coils will be described for magnetic vector potential \mathbf A and electric scalar potential V formulation ( \mathbf {A}- V formulation). The originality of this paper is demonstrated by the source computations for \mathbf {A}- V formulation with non-meshed coils. Usually, coils for \mathbf A- V formulation are meshed, and non-meshed coils are studied with reduced magnetic vector potential \mathbf Ar and electric scalar potential V formulation ( \mathbf {A}_{r}-V formulation). This paper presents a novel flux-modulated type dual-axis motor that has two mechanical inputs/outputs, since it consists of a stator, a permanent magnet rotor, and a modulating rotor. Furthermore, since the dual-axis motor has a function the same as a planetary type magnetic gear, it can transmit torque with arbitrary gear ratio and divide mechanical input/output into two rotors without any mechanical contact. In this paper, first, conventional and proposed flux-modulated type dual-axis motors are optimized and compared using finite-element analysis. Incipient stator winding fault in permanent magnet synchronous wind generators (PMSWGs) is very difficult to be detected as the fault generated variations in terminal electrical parameters are very weak and chaotic. This paper simulates the incipient stator winding faults at different degree of insulation degradation of one turn in the winding of a PMSWG. Cosimulation method by combining finite element model and external circuits is used. Hilbert–Huang transformation is applied to detect the very early stage fault in interturn insulation by analyzing the stator current. Detection results show that the minimum detectable severity degree of interturn fault in this paper is 0.1488%, which is much better than the best record in the literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a disk-spacer damper (DSD), a new damper structure, for reducing disk flutter. Three types of DSD structures, which consist of an aluminum disk spacer having grooves embedded with viscoelastic (VE) films, have been developed in this paper. First, we investigated the material properties of the VE film, such as shear modulus and discrete relaxation spectra, and then carried out numerical analysis of the damping effect using the material properties. Further, we measured the damping effect of each DSD structure and confirmed that the proposed DSD reduces the disk flutter amplitude between the (0,1) mode and the (0,4) mode by 20%–30%. This paper proposes an approach for a 2-D representation of Shannon wavelets for highly reliable fault diagnosis of multiple induction motor defects. Since the wavelet transform is efficient for analyzing non-stationary and non-deterministic vibration signals, this paper utilizes wavelet coefficients deduced from the Shannon mother wavelet function with varying dilation and translation parameters to create 2-D gray-level images. Using the resulting images and their associated texture characteristics, this paper extracts features by generating global neighborhood structure maps, which are used to extract global image features. The texture features are then used as inputs in one-against-all multi-class support vector machines to identify faults in the induction machine. To evaluate the performance of the proposed approach, it is compared with five conventional state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of classification accuracy. In addition, this paper explores the robustness of the proposed approach in noisy environments by adding white Gaussian noise to the acquired vibration signals. The experimental results indicate that the proposed approach outperforms conventional algorithms in terms of the classification accuracy. In this paper, we propose a luminance and color correction scheme for multiview image compression for a 3-DTV system. According to characteristics of luminance and chrominance, we propose a 3-D discrete cosine transform (3-D DCT) for 3-D image compression. Then, a cubic memory-based 3-D DCT is proposed for 3-D image compression in this paper. 3-D display technology has become an important technology lately. TFT-based multiview 3-D display has the advantage of convenient setup, mass production, and a large amount of 3-D content support, making it a popular 3-D display product. However, multiview 3-D signals need huge storage space and wide channel bandwidth, especially when view number is larger than two views. To overcome the obstacles, we propose a 3-D DCT component based on cubic memory to perform 3-D image compression in this paper. Magnetic anisotropy is always known to decrease with temperature and so far there has been no work in the literature reporting about any experimental observation of the increment of magnetic anisotropy with temperature in any thin films other than the one reported in our previous papers. In this paper, we demonstrate that gradient-composition sputtering technique is a method to fabricate magnetic thin films having an in-plane magnetic anisotropy increased with temperature. In particular, our composition-graded magnetic thin films of FeCoX (X \(=\) Ta, Zr, Hf, Lu) show an increase of ferromagnetic resonance frequency when the temperature is elevated, which evidently indicates the increase of magnetic anisotropy with temperature. This peculiar behavior is ascribed to the stress-induced origin of the magnetic anisotropy present in the films grown by gradient-composition sputtering in which the stress of the films is increased with temperature. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the mechanism of this unusual thermal behavior, an additional set of composition-graded FeCoTa thin films were fabricated onto different substrates showing that the increase of magnetic anisotropy with temperature is present in all the films regardless of the substrates used. This experimental result unambiguously implies that the increasing of stress with temperature is not only due to the difference between the thermal expansion coefficients between the substrates and the films, but also owing to the intrinsic nature of the composition gradient of the films. In this paper, we introduce for the first time the representation of parameterized complex intensity for 3-D magnetic field and apply it to derive migration imaging formulas for rapid interpretation of magnetic vector field data. Two migration transforms are achieved, one is for imaging full-vectorial magnetization intensity, and the other is for the divergence of full-vectorial magnetization intensity, named the equivalent magnetic charge intensity in this paper. They are obtained by the downward continuation of well-behaved analytical functions and are expected to be robust to noise in the observed data. Unlike most of the existing approaches for interpreting magnetic data, the proposed algorithms make no assumption that there is only induced magnetic field. Another contribution of this paper is that we derive the point spread functions and use them to do the resolution analysis of proposed migration imaging formulas. In this paper, the magnetic integration of resonant reset forward (RRF) converter and magnetic-thermal coupling analysis of integrated magnetic (IM) components are explored. The formulas of magnetic reluctance, winding turns, and magnetic flux density are obtained based on the equivalent magnetic circuit and minimum current pulsation scheme. Meanwhile, circuit-field coupling model of RRF converter and magnetic-thermal coupling model of IM components are built with the finite-element analysis (FEA) method. The simulation results illustrate that the core of the integrated RRF converter works in an unsaturated condition, the temperature rise of IM components is about 20 °C, and the integrated RRF converter has almost the same power efficiency as the conventional discrete RRF converter. Furthermore, hardware prototypes are fabricated and tested to verify the simulation accuracy and design validity. This paper introduces a localization protocol that fills a gap among already existing methods, such as ground penetrating radar or methods based on inductive prospecting. The principle is to attach a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag to a non-metallic object of interest buried in a non-magnetic soil and deduce its depth from the magnetic induction in the near field regime between the buried tag and an RFID antenna. Electromagnetic propagation in soils has been extensively studied in geophysics. The higher the frequency, the lower the penetration depth. The standard frequency range in geophysics is lower than 100 kHz to reach penetration depth as high as several tens of meters and the soil conductance is the main influencing factor. When working with passive RFID tags, their received power and, consequently, the detection range in air grows with the frequency. A frequency tradeoff for the detection in media lies in the range of 10–50 MHz, where the authorized RFID frequency is 13.56 MHZ. In this range, the wavenumber in weakly saline soils depends essentially on the medium dielectric permittivity (see). In this paper, we calculate the precision of the estimation of the burying depth of the tag in terms of the standard deviation and the corresponding bias up to two uncertain parameters—the penetration depth and the activation field. Rotary-linear switched reluctance motors (RLSRMs) have been introduced to realize simultaneous rotary and linear motions in one structure. This paper proposes the modeling of RLSRM in two manners: analytical and finite-element methods. In the first approach, a model is proposed based on position-wise functions which describe the governing equations of the motor. The derived equations are utilized in a block diagram to comprise the model. In the second approach, static FEA is utilized to improve the former model by obtaining the inductance profile of the motor. The models separate the rotary motion from the linear motion in order to calculate the torque and force. The analytical model is faster than the FEA-based model because of the independency to FEA. However, it is less accurate. The FEA-based model needs prior static FEA and considers the fringing and saturation effects more accurately. The FEA-based model is computationally more efficient than the 3-D transient FEA. The motor’s performance parameters obtained via the models versus the 3-D transient FEA as well as the experimental test results indicate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed models. Accurate modeling of three-phase asymmetric (three- and five-limb) transformers is still a challenge. In this paper, a method for the calculation of the major hysteresis loop for three-phase asymmetric transformers is proposed. All necessary information can be obtained from measurements taken at the transformer terminals without breaking the connections and using only standard tests. For illustration and validation, the method is applied to Wye–wye and Wye–delta connections for three-limb and five-limb transformers, but the method is applicable to all transformer connections. The obtained hysteresis loops are implemented in three-phase dual-reversible models. Simulation results are validated with laboratory experiments. This paper presents a magnetic safety evaluation of the static magnetic field produced by magnetic floors with permanent magnet properties utilized in the construction industry. The magnetic floors analyzed in this paper are composed by a concentration of 85% of isotropic strontium (Sr) ferrite powder mixed with chlorinated polyethylene. The magnetic floors are magnetized and tested in the laboratory to measure the magnetic field levels in different regions of the magnetic floors and magnetic subfloors. Finite-element (FE) simulations are carried out to compute the magnetic field produced by magnetic floors. The numerical results and laboratory tests are compared and analyzed. Values of the magnetic field between 2 and 50 mT are computed and measured in different regions of magnetic floors. Finally, the static magnetic field levels obtained in the magnetic floors are compared with the permitted magnetic field values for different electronic devices, pacemakers, and other common objects utilized by persons in buildings. The results obtained in this paper show that magnetic floors are safe, and they can be employed in buildings without putting in risk electronic devices or persons with pacemakers. Magnetoresistive (MR) sensors have been identified as promising candidates for the development of high-performance magnetometers due to their high sensitivity, low cost, low power consumption, and small size. The rapid advance of MR sensor technology has opened up a variety of MR sensor applications. These applications are in different areas that require MR sensors with different properties. Future MR sensor development in each of these areas requires an overview and a strategic guide. An MR sensor roadmap (non-recording applications) was therefore developed and made public by the Technical Committee of the IEEE Magnetics Society with the aim to provide an research and development (R&D) guide for MR sensors intended to be used by industry, government, and academia. The roadmap was developed over a three-year period and coordinated by an international effort of 22 taskforce members from ten countries and 17 organizations, including universities, research institutes, and sensor companies. In this paper, the current status of MR sensors for non-recording applications was identified by analyzing the patent and publication statistics. As a result, timescales for MR sensor development were established and critical milestones for sensor parameters were extracted in order to gain insight into potential MR sensor applications (non-recording). Five application areas were identified, and five MR sensor roadmaps were established. These include biomedical applications, flexible electronics, position sensing and human–computer interactions, non-destructive evaluation and monitoring, and navigation and transportation. Each roadmap was analyzed using a logistic growth model, and new opportunities were predicted based on the extrapolated curve, forecast milestones, and professional judgment of the taskforce members. This paper provides a framework for MR sensor technology (non-recording applications) to be used for public and private R&D planning, in order to provide guidance into likely MR sensor applications, products, and services expected in the next 15 years and beyond. This paper proposes a joint read equalization scheme for interlaced magnetic recording (IMR) employing an array of readers, where multi-reader captured waveforms from asynchronously recorded tracks are jointly processed for single or multiple track data retrievals. In the array-reader-based IMR (ARIMR), the inter-track interference (ITI) collected from one reader is not necessarily synchronized to the other readers, especially in the case of a large cross-track separation (CTS) between the readers due to the linear density differentiation between the neighboring tracks. For the efficient mitigation of such asynchronous ITIs, an effective resampling-based joint equalization scheme is proposed in this paper, where multiple readbacks are digitally synchronized for designated target tracks, and joint processing of them suppresses the ITI in the equalized output. Furthermore, the proposed effective synchronization can be applied for joint multi-track retrievals when the CTS of the array reader is closed to the track pitch. For performance evaluations of the proposed joint read equalization scheme, numerical ARIMR channel simulations by the micro-pixelated magnetic channel model are conducted, and a bit error rate performance is evaluated under various configurations. In addition, waveforms captured from a dual-reader hard disk drive are evaluated with the proposed joint read equalization schemes for practical performance measurements of ARIMR. In both evaluations, unfavorable CTS conditions are investigated to account for the dominant skew effect in ARIMR, where the proposed joint equalization scheme enhances the off-track capability performance, especially with the customized configurations of interlaced recording. In overall, ARIMR with joint read equalization shows the potential of an areal density capability gain and a doubling of the data transfer rate over the conventional perpendicular magnetic recording and legacy IMR. A coaxial magnetic gear (CMG) consisting of an inner ring, outer ring, and flux modulator exhibits relatively large torque density at low operating cost and low noise level. To guide the selection of soft magnetic materials for the flux modulator, this paper first incorporates the Jiles–Atherton model within a finite-element (FE) framework. The influence of nonlinear magnetic properties on end-effect losses (magnetic flux leakage and fringing) is then investigated with the objective of maximizing the pullout torque. For flux modulators whose initial magnetic permeability and saturation flux density exceed certain threshold value, the pullout torque of a CMG becomes insensitive to magnetic properties and end-effect losses can be efficiently calculated from a 2-D FE model together with a constant torque reduction ratio. This paper presents a systematic torque surface method that can decouple the analysis of average torque and torque ripples. This paper is a study on the application position of skew in order to reduce the cogging torque of a magnetic geared synchronous motor (MGM). The cogging torque affects the noise and vibration of the motor, so it should be reduced as much as possible. To solve this problem, a conventional permanent magnet (PM) synchronous motor is skewed to a PM. However, unlike other synchronous motors, the MGM has pole pieces (PPs), and a larger cogging torque is generated due to a larger reluctance difference. There have been few studies on the reduction of cogging torque of MGM, so it is essential to study the skew structure of MGM. Magnetic fluid is a new type of functional materials. The seal of reciprocating shaft is a typical application of the magnetic fluid. However, there is little research on the magnetic fluid reciprocating seals, thus improving the sealing life and seal capacity is the key problem of studying the reciprocating seals. This paper presents a structure of the seal to test the sealing life and other characteristics. The magnetic field of the seal is estimated using the finite-element method. The thickness of the magnetic fluid on the surface of reciprocating shaft and the flow rate of magnetic fluid are obtained theoretically. The experimental result shows that the static seal capacity is related to the fluid volume. The static seal capacity obtained by experiment is approximately equal to the value through the simulation with sufficient magnetic fluid. The relationship between sealing life and the motion of the reciprocating shaft is obtained experimentally. The sealing life decreases rapidly with the increase of the stroke and velocity. In this paper, we investigate the effect of temperature variations on the off-diagonal giant magneto-impedance (GMI) response. This paper is based on a theoretical model describing the GMI-based sensor response. The modeling has been extended to include the resistivity dependence versus the temperature. It allows to calculate both temperature sensitivity and intrinsic magnetic field sensitivity, whose ratio leads to the determination of the magnetic field offset drift versus the temperature. Thanks to an original conditioning circuitry based on a double ac current excitation instead of the classical one, we achieved an improvement of the long-term stability and minimized the sensor temperature dependence. Experimentally obtained results have been compared with the expected offset drift for the classical GMI, and with the expected fluctuation reduction while adopting this technique, showing a relatively good agreement with the proposed modeling. Magnetic nanostructures have potential applications in ultrahigh-density magnetic storage. In this paper, the dynamics of the dual magnetic vortices in elliptical Permalloy nanodisk are investigated using micromagnetic modeling. Under the stimulation of the short-axis ( $y$ -axis) Gaussian field pulse and long-axis ( $x$ -axis) constant field, the equilibrium positions of dual-vortex cores can be driven away from the initial positions. The displacement in the $y$ -direction is proportional to the magnitude of the $x$ -axis constant field. The displacement in the $x$ -direction exhibit periodic reliance on the pulsewidth of the $y$ -axis Gaussian field pulse. The threshold value of pulse strength for dual-vortex motion increases with the magnitude of the $x$ -axis constant field. The mechanism of polarity and chirality switching in dual-vortex cores are studied through analyzing the trajectories of vortex cores in the annihilation and nucleation processes. The switching of polarity exhibits an oscillatory dependence on the pulsewidth and strength. The minimum pulse strength required for chirality switching is 120 mT, while the corresponding pulsewidth is influenced by the $x$ -axis constant field. This paper presents a detailed theoretical background of the saturation wave model (SWM), which offers a simplified homogenized solution of the nonlinear diffusion phenomena inside soft magnetic steel sheets (SMSSs). The SWM is capable of predicting the complicated dynamic magnetization of SMSS without discretization of the cross section of the SMSSs. Despite its simplicity, the SWM predicts exact solutions of the discussed problems when step-like magnetization curves are assumed and reasonably accurate solutions for real magnetization curves. In this paper, the SWM is analyzed in comparison to the numerical solution of the diffusion phenomena using the parametric magnetodynamic model, where interesting properties of the SWM are discussed and pointed out. The use of power electronics has led to a growing importance of higher time-harmonic content in electrical machines. To gain insight in phenomena related to these higher harmonics, such as noise and losses, a good understanding of the magnetic field’s harmonic content is mandatory. Moreover, the development of fast and accurate, harmonic-based, analytical models requires a qualitative knowledge of the machine’s time- and spatial-harmonic content. Although the harmonic content of electric machines is an extensively studied topic, previous publications tended to focus on one type of synchronous machines and often did not consider higher time-harmonic orders. This paper complements the existing theory by providing a more general approach, thereby covering machines and operating points that were not covered until now. It considers both three-phase and multi-phase machines with an odd number of phases. The winding distribution can either have an integer or a fractional number of slots per pole and per phase, and higher time-harmonic content is regarded as well. Note that the saturation is neglected. Despite its general validity, this paper succeeds at providing one simple equation to determine the machine’s time-and spatial-harmonic content. Moreover, this paper also extensively discusses the physical causes of the harmonic content. The combination of this general validity, the simple result, and the insight in the physics makes that this paper is a strong tool to both study harmonic-related phenomena in electric machines and to develop harmonic-based analytical models. Stick-slip motion is the most well-known phenomenon in nanotribology. Maier et al. previously studied the dependence of slip time on contact geometry. In their paper, they were able to identify the intermediate state during slip motion. However, detailed study of this intermediate state is difficult due to the fast dynamics. The advantage of molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is that it can provide detailed information and direct visualization of the tribological phenomena on a time scale of a few nanoseconds. In this paper, we investigate the detailed mechanism of stick-slip motion in nanoscale. MD simulation precisely mimics friction force microscopy experiments. In MD simulations, a crystalline Si tip slides on a graphene surface, and the tip size is varied. The simulation results provide evidence of the intermediate state during slip motion and reveal the hierarchical structure of the stick-slip motion in nanoscale. This paper presents work completed in order to investigate the importance of magnetic shunts in transverse flux machines. Two types of transverse flux machines with different configurations were designed and tested in the laboratory. The first type of machine is a transverse flux generator with inner rotor. This machine was designed according to one of the patents. The second type of the machine is a transfer flux generator with double coil. Both types of the generators were designed in such a way so that it was possible to implement magnetic shunts inside the machines. Finite-element method analysis and experimental results showed that transverse flux machines without magnetic shunts had a number of disadvantages compared to those with magnetic shunts. These disadvantages are: higher flux leakage in the stator cores, partial cancelation of flux linkage in the coils, higher cogging torque, and increased torque ripple. This paper showed that magnetic shunts played a significant role in the performance of transverse flux machines. As study showed, magnetic shunts complicate a manufacturing process and increase the weight of the machine. How animals navigate in their cross-continental migration has puzzled scientists for centuries. To date, the mechanism behind this mysterious navigation remains unclear. In this paper, a hypothesis is developed and computer simulations have been performed to investigate long-distance animal navigation. Simulation results show that animals may be able to complete their long-distance navigation by observing a spatial angle included by the geomagnetic field line and a geographic direction, without necessarily knowing any prior landmark information. Our results not only match existing observation reports in detail on the long-distance migration routes of animals, but also are able to explain the conflicting evidence on the role of geomagnetic field in animal navigation. We think our results could help reveal the actual mechanism of animal navigation. Non-oriented (NO) electrical steels are widely used as core materials in rotating electrical machines, whereas for measurements under alternating magnetization (AM), standardized methods exist; measurements under rotational magnetization (RM) prove to represent a significant problem. In this paper, we performed measurements of both circular rotational and alternating losses in rolling and transverse directions for four types of NO materials of different Si contents and thicknesses by means of a hexagonal rotational single-sheet tester at different frequencies and flux density values. The losses were measured by the electrodynamical method and for confirmation also by the thermal (rise-of-temperature) method. The estimated rotational losses by means of established well-known methods are correlated with the measured ones. Literature reports attempt to estimate losses $P^{\mathrm {(RM)}}$ for circular RM on the basis of losses $P^{\mathrm {(AM)}}$ for AM. A loss ratio factor $\Gamma = P^{\mathrm {(RM)}}/P^{\mathrm {(AM)}}$ is defined which is reported to be close to $\Gamma = 2$. In this paper, $\Gamma $ factors were determined for three different grades of material. The results indicate a rather weak dependence of $\Gamma $ on the grade, however, a strong one on the intensity $B$ of induction. In approximation, $\Gamma = 2$ is valid for rather weak induction of the order $B = 0.6$ T. Induction increases in steps of $\Delta B = 0.1$ T yield decreases of loss ratio by about $\Delta \Gamma = 3$ %. This enables a rough estimation of rotational losses. However, the possibility of estimation is restricted to the circular case of constant modulus and angular velocity of the $B$ vector. Other cases are characterized by different values of both eddy current losses and hysteresis losses, RM involving completely different domain reconstructions compared to AM. In recent years, the increasing need in small satellite solutions triggers the miniaturization of attitude control systems. Reaction spheres were proposed as promising replacements of conventional reaction wheels for their $4\pi $ rotations. Since the generated control torques could be about any desired axes, a single reaction sphere is sufficient for three-axis stabilizations of spacecraft. This paper presents an innovative design of reaction spheres. Its driving unit is a combination of permanent magnets (PMs) and electromagnetic induction. This enables the generation of torques about three principle axes simultaneously. Meanwhile, a contactless bearing is integrated into the actuator design. Detailed designs and working principles of the reaction sphere are described. To investigate performance characteristics of the actuator, field modeling is of great importance and provides the basis for dynamics modeling. In this paper, an improved analytical model for dynamic fields excited by slotless distributed windings is presented for the first time. To study the cross coupling between PMs and electromagnetic induction, the static field generated by PMs is also modeled analytically. These developed models are validated through comparisons with numerical simulations. Electromagnetic torques generated by the actuator are calculated through the approaches of the Maxwell stress tensor and the Lorentz force law. Torque calculations based on the analytical field models deviate from those based on the numerical model slightly, with the maximum error within 4%. This paper studies the output performance improvement of the spherical multi-degree-of-freedom (multi-DOF) motor. The multi-DOF motor is a motor that is designed to drive in multiple axes. Therefore, it is important that the shape of the motor should be fabricated to enable multi-axis driving when designing the multi-DOF motor. In addition, it is essential to consider the output density characteristics and stability characteristic analysis to reduce the volume of the multi-DOF motor and to operate of the motor in the stable range, respectively. In this paper, the structure and operating characteristics of the spherical multi-DOF motor with dual air gaps are described. In order to improve the output characteristics of the multi-DOF motor, characteristics analysis was performed according to the change of the number of the phases and pole pitch angles, and stability characteristic analysis for stable operation of the multi-DOF motor was performed. Accurate modeling of soft- and hard-magnetic materials for the numerical simulation of rotating electrical machines is required to allow predictions on the operational characteristics along the torque–speed map, already in the design stage. The full potential of most appropriate material selection and concurrent geometry adaption can only be utilized if models can represent actual material behavior. The accurate prediction of iron losses of soft-magnetic materials for various frequencies and magnetic flux densities, as well as the degradation due to manufacturing is eminent for the design of electrical machines. Therefore, advanced material models need to be adapted and their accuracy examined to further improve the modeling and enable progression. This paper will give an overview of the current modeling approaches applied at the Institute of Electrical Machines for soft- and hard-magnetic materials in the simulation of rotating electrical machines. A case example in the form of a traction drive is presented to which the models are applied. For the machine modeling, the inhouse solver pyMOOSE is utilized. In order to determine the losses with regard to manufacturing processes, the iron-loss model with material degradation is used in combination with a machine simulation scheme of the entire operating range of the machine. This paper applied the finite-element method (FEM) with topological data structures to the optimization of electrical devices. A generic modifiable graph data structure is built according to the graph-theoretic foundation for these data structures. The employed topological FEM avoids rebuilding of the mesh in traditional FEM method while geometrical variations happen. It is an effective algorithm which can save computer storage and working time when applied to successive optimization. For testing a conductive pipeline, remote field eddy current testing (RFECT) is used, which is composed of solenoidal exciter coil and receiving sensor coils. In RFECT, there is remote field zone where the eddy current distributions are concentrated on the external surface of the pipe wall. Therefore, it is possible to detect a defect that occurs on the external surface of the pipe wall even if the receiving coils are located inside the pipe. From the measured coil signals, it is necessary to decompose background offset and predict the pattern of defect signal in order to estimate the defect size for the maintenance of underground pipelines eventually. In the process, the amplitude variations of the induced magnetic field at sensor coils are closely related to defect depth. Therefore, it is important to analyze and eliminate distortions of measured RFECT signals. This paper analyzes the effects of the induced magnetic field on the sensing signals with respect to different depth sizes in the RFECT system. The amplitude and the distribution pattern of defect signals are computed by a 3-D finite-element method and the method to eliminate the signal distortions caused by induced magnetic fields are presented. In magnetic recording systems, consecutive sections experience different signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). To perform error correction over these systems, one approach is to use an individual block code for each section. However, the performance over a section affected by a lower SNR is weaker compared to the performance over a section affected by a higher SNR. Spatially-coupled (SC) codes are a family of graph-based codes with capacity approaching performance and low latency decoding. An SC code is constructed by partitioning an underlying block code to several component matrices, and coupling copies of the component matrices together. The contribution of this paper is threefold. First, we present a new partitioning technique to efficiently construct SC codes with column weights 4 and 6. Second, we present an SC code construction for channels with SNR variation. Our SC code construction provides local error correction for each section by means of the underlying codes that cover one section each, and simultaneously, an added level of error correction by means of coupling among the underlying codes. Third, we introduce a low-complexity interleaving scheme specific to SC codes that further improves their performance over channels with SNR variation. Our simulation results show that our SC codes outperform individual block codes by more than one and two orders of magnitudes in the error floor region compared to the block codes with and without regular interleaving, respectively. This paper presents the analysis and the fault-tolerant control strategy for a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with auxiliary modular design. Due to the simple structure and the self-starting ability, the single-phase PMSM with U-shaped core got more attentions in early research; however, its development was limited by motor large torque ripple and low efficiency. As one effective solution, the PMSM with auxiliary modular design comes out, which can obtain a smooth operation feature with shifted magnet array and improve the system robustness with fault-tolerant control. Based on the proposed PMSM with auxiliary modular design, the motor mathematical model and control scheme are presented in this paper to illustrate motor characteristics and achieve the fault-tolerant ability. In this paper, in order to make a clear principal cause in increasing iron loss of amorphous wound cores in processing, effects of bending stress on magnetic characteristics of a Fe-based amorphous wound core are clarified. The amorphous magnetic materials have been widely used as a core material of power transformers to reduce iron loss due to their excellent soft magnetic characteristics. However, the amorphous magnetic material has an issue that the building factor (B.F.) is very large in comparison with that of grain-oriented electrical steel sheets. The amorphous transformers usually use a wound core formed by stacking plural amorphous sheets in different lengths. Bending stress is, therefore, generated at each corner of the wound core in processing. Due to this bending stress, the magnetic characteristics of the wound core deteriorate. The deterioration of magnetic characteristics of the wound amorphous core is so large because of the large magnetostriction constant. As a result, the B.F. of this material becomes larger. In order to remove the residual stress, which is generated in the wound core including the bending stress, the amorphous wound core is usually annealed in a magnetic field, which is called “a magnetic annealing.” In this paper, the effect of the magnetic annealing on the magnetic properties is studied experimentally by evaluating some wound amorphous model cores. In this paper, the iron loss models for electrical machines are first reviewed. One of the most accurate iron loss models, when the temperature is constant, is identified. An improved temperature-dependent iron loss model is also introduced. By applying the improved iron loss model to the electrical machine thermal analysis, the thermal and loss analyses can be fully coupled. Based on this, an improved thermal-loss coupling analysis method for electrical machine is developed in this paper. The electrical machine iron loss tests are carried out. The analysis and measurement results are then compared in order to validate the improved thermal-loss coupling analysis method. Due to additive operation’s dominated computation and simplified network in binary convolutional neural network (BCNN), it is promising for Internet of Things scenarios which demand ultralow power consumption. By means of fully exploiting the in-memory computing advantages and low current consumption design using multilevel cell (MLC) spin-toque transfer magnetic random access memory (STT-MRAM), this paper proposes an MLC-STT-computing in-memory-based computing in-memory architecture to achieve convolutional operation for BCNN to further reduce the power consumption. Simulation results show that compared with the resistive random access memory (RRAM)- and spin orbit torque-STT-MRAM-based counterparts, the architecture proposed in this paper reduces power consumption by ~ $35{\times}$ and 59% in Modified National Institute of Standards and Technology data set, respectively. For the application in the magnetic core of an electrical machine, electrical steel is cut, packaged, and fixed. The processes induce plastic deformation as well as residual stress. As a result, the magnetic material properties are deteriorated. Most of the effects act local, e.g., in the vicinity of the cut edge or welding line. In order to model the change in local magnetic properties, the effect mechanisms of plastic and elastic stress have to be understood and quantified. In this paper, rectangular samples of a conventional non-oriented 2.4 wt% FeSi with 0.35 mm thickness are stressed uniaxially beyond the elastic limit and characterized during loading, after deformation, and during reloading. A homogeneous stress distribution across the cross section is targeted by the experimental setup to enable a correlation between the global magnetic properties and mechanical finite-element simulations of the stress. As a result, separate physical effects, e.g., dislocation formation, global stress distribution, and residual stress after dislocation formation, on magnetic property change are analyzed. Spatially coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes have emerged to possess capacity-approaching performance. The SC-LDPC codes can be decoded by a sliding window, therefore, the decoding latency and complexity of SC-LDPC codes are lower than those of underlying LDPC codes when the codeword length is very large. In this paper, the SC-LDPC decoder with the sliding window is employed in turbo equalization of magnetic recording systems. We examine the bit error rates (BERs) of the output of the sliding window during the iterative decoding, and then observe that the consecutive code blocks have approximately the same BERs. Herein, to reduce decoding complexity of SC-LDPC codes, the consecutive code blocks can be considered as the output of SC-LDPC codes. In addition, the non-uniform schedule update is adopted in the window decoding to avoid unnecessary updates within a window. The simulation results show that the proposed decoding algorithms applied in bit-patterned media magnetic recording systems can achieve a significant reduction in complexity compared to the traditional decoding without any loss in BER performance. A novel interior permanent magnet linear vernier machine (IPM-LVM) is proposed and analyzed in this paper. Compared to the existing surface-mounted permanent magnet linear vernier machine (SPM-LVM) and the SPM-LVM with Halbach arrays, the proposed machine can offer higher flux density in both the air-gap and armature iron core, which lead to a higher back electric motive force (back EMF) and higher thrust density under the same mover volume and heat capacity. Besides, it is proven that the proposed IPM-LVM also has a lower demagnetization risk compared to the SPM-LVM. Furthermore, in order to reduce the thrust ripple of the proposed machine, the three-sectional structure is adopted in this paper, which makes the proposed IPM-LVM exhibit high thrust density and low thrust ripple at the same time. This paper presents a multi-coupling wireless power transfer (WPT) system aimed at dealing with various charging requests simultaneously. The proposed WPT system is able to distribute the energy more reasonably based on the top priority principle applying a novel distribution algorithm. Besides, the proposed system has the ability to charge the load in both the constant current mode and constant voltage mode while detecting the state of charging without using the bidirectional wireless communication. Moreover, this paper also puts forward a current injection topology named capacitance buffer rather than the traditional capacitor array in order to alleviate the large demand of the capacitors with different values under different resonant frequencies. This paper proposes and implements an accurate position detection method in wireless power transfer (WPT) for implant applications. Since the technique of WPT via magnetic resonant coupling makes it possible to non-invasively supply electricity for implants from an external tramsitter, an accurate position detection of an invisible receiver from the external transmitter is highly desirable to enhance the transfer efficiency and reduce the magnetic leakage. The magnetoresistive (MR) sensor has been widely used to detect the magnetic field variation due to its low power consumption and high accuracy. In this paper, the compact-in-size MR sensor array in plane with the transmitter is developed to directly detect the magnetic field variation caused by the coil misalignment. Thus, definite advantages of efficient and compact position detection in WPT for implants can be achieved. This paper proposes a diode-based multi-level cell spin–orbit torque magnetic random-access memory (SOT-MRAM) for high density memory applications. By stacking a shared diode over two in-parallel magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) that share a common heavy metal electrode, our proposed cell requires only one silicon-based transistor to access 2 bits. Having just one transistor to access 2 bits results in at least $2\times $ higher density when compared to various designs in the literature. Moreover, utilizing a high-density MRAM process, a $4F^{2}$ effective 1 bit area can be achieved. Furthermore, our proposed design maintains the high energy efficiency of the conventional SOT-MRAM. In addition, an improvement in figure of merit of at least 30% defined as energy area product is obtained compared to various designs. An arc fault establishes a current path in the air which may cause malfunction of direct current (dc) system and even a fire hazard. Arc fault detection is essential to improving the reliability, efficiency, and safety of the dc system. However, the randomness of dc arc faults makes it difficult to define their characteristics. In this paper, a magnetic-sensing-based technique is proposed to detect dc arc. This paper developed a promising dc-arcing detection technique based on the analysis of frequency-domain features of the magnetic field measured by a magnetic sensor. The effects of the supply voltage, load current, and electrode diameter on the frequency domain of the arc current were investigated. The experimental results show that the proposed detection technique could reliably discriminate the normal operation and arc fault. In recent years, microgrid technologies have gained considerable interest, where a common dc-bus is generally used to interconnect multiple power sources. The existing technology of common dc bus-based direct integration of multiple sources has some critical problems, such as isolation and the requirement of additional control circuit for voltage imbalance and common mode. A common high-frequency magnetic bus (instead of the common dc bus) is proposed in this paper to overcome the limitations and complications of the existing technology of dc bus-based direct integration of multiple sources. In this paper, an extensive investigation on electromagnetic performance of advanced magnetic materials (amorphous and nanocrystalline alloys) is presented. The design process of an efficient and compact high-frequency common magnetic bus for integration of multiple power sources is also discussed. Manganese-zinc (MnZn) ferrites have important application in convertors and switching mode power supplies. The core losses ($\text{P}_{L}$) of MnZn ferrites have serious influence on the performance of power conversion devices. It is worth emphasizing that reducing the core losses at high frequency is of great significance for the miniaturization and integration of power conversion devices. Here in this paper, MnZn ferrites have been fabricated by the method of solid-state reaction, and the effect of CaCO3 and V2O5 co-additives on the microstructure and magnetic property has been investigated. This paper illustrated the competition mechanism of grain growth, which originated from the hindrance effect of CaCO3 and acceleration effect of V2O5, as well as the effect of CaCO3 and V2O5 on core losses by means of loss separation method. In addition, as for the MnZn ferrite sample with 0.1 wt% CaCO3 and 0.01 wt% V2O5 co-additives, core losses were suppressed to 46 and 664 kW/m3 corresponding to 3 MHz 10 mT and 3 MHz 30 mT at 25 °C, respectively. In this paper, we develop and examine permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) by use of both stator and rotor cores made of nanocrystalline magnetic materials (NMMs). We report core loss properties of the PMSM with the NMM under inverter excitation. In addition, we compare core losses of the PMSM with conventional non-oriented (NO) steel sheets under inverter excitation to discuss the core loss characteristics of the NMM motor. In average, under inverter excitation, the reduction ratio in core loss of the PMSM made of NMM is about 60% as compared with the core loss of the PMSM with NO sheets. This paper presents the detail analysis of the radial force and bending moment responsible for vibration in the stator permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). The vibration characteristics, especially vibration mode, of stator PMSM are studied. First, the air-gap flux density distribution and radial force density distribution are derived in detail. Then, two types of vibration modes, called pulsating and bending modes, and their reasons as pulsating force and bending moment are analyzed and elaborated which are not analyzed and verified before. In addition, the relationships between these two vibration shapes and pole width, pole number, and slot number are analyzed. To confirm the analysis and theory, the multi-probe mode-included test method of vibration acceleration is used to obtain the vibration mode information of motors, and the experimental results on a 6-pole/36-slot stator PMSM match well with the simulation results.
