Recently, there has been a lot of success in using the deterministic approach to provide approximate characterization of Gaussian network capacity. In this paper, we take a deterministic view and revisit the problem of wiretap channel with side information. A precise characterization of the secrecy capacity is obtained for a linear deterministic model, which naturally suggests a coding scheme which we show to achieve the secrecy capacity of the degraded Gaussian model (dubbed as “secret writing on dirty paper”) to within half a bit. We derive the capacity region of the two-user dirty-paper Gaussian multiaccess channel (MAC) with conferencing encoders. In this MAC, prior to each transmission block, the transmitters can hold a conference in which they can communicate with each other over error-free bit pipes of given capacities. The received signal suffers not only from additive Gaussian noise but also from additive interference, which is known noncausally to the transmitters but not to the receiver. The additive interference is modeled as Gaussian or uniform over a sphere. We show that the interference can be perfectly mitigated, i.e., that the capacity region without interference can also be achieved in its presence. This holds irrespective of whether the transmitters learn the interference before or after the conference. It follows as a corollary that also for the MAC with degraded message sets, the interference can be perfectly mitigated if it is known noncausally to the transmitters. To derive our results, we generalize Costa's single-user writing-on-dirty-paper achievability result to channels with dependent interference and not-necessarily Gaussian noise. A wideband Rayleigh fading channel is considered with causal channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter and no receiver CSI. A simple orthogonal code with energy detection rule at the receiver (similar to pulse position modulation in IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, vol. 46, no. 4, Apr. 2000 and IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, vol. 52 no. 5, May 2006) is shown to achieve the capacity of this channel in the wideband limit. This strategy transmits energy only when the channel gain exceeds a threshold, hence only needs causal transmitter CSI. In the wideband limit, this capacity without any receiver CSI is the same as the capacity with full receiver CSI, which is proportional to the logarithm of the bandwidth. Similar threshold-based pulse position modulation is shown to achieve the capacity per unit cost of the dirty-tape channel (dirty paper channel with causal transmitter CSI and no receiver CSI), which equals its capacity per unit cost with full receiver CSI. Then, a general discrete channel with i.i.d. states is considered. Each input has an associated cost and a zero cost input “0” exists. The channel state is assumed to be known at the transmitter in a causal manner. Capacity per unit cost is found for this channel and a simple orthogonal code is shown to achieve this capacity. Later, a novel orthogonal coding scheme is proposed for the case of causal transmitter CSI and a condition for equivalence of capacity per unit cost for causal and noncausal transmitter CSI is derived. In this paper, the sequence families of which maximum correlation is determined by the Weil bound of exponential sums are revisited. Using the same approach, two new constructions with large family sizes and low maximum correlation are given. The first construction is an analog of one recent result derived from the interleaved structure of Sidel'nikov sequences. For a prime p and an integer M\vert (p-1), the new M-ary sequence families of period p are obtained from irreducible quadratic polynomials and known power residue-based sequence families. The new sequence families increase family sizes of the known power residue-based sequence families, but keep the maximum correlation unchanged. In this paper, we study the diversity-multiplexing-gain tradeoff (DMT) of wireless relay networks under the half-duplex constraint. It is often unclear what penalty if any, is imposed by the half-duplex constraint on the DMT of such networks. We study two classes of networks; the first class, called KPP(I) networks, is the class of networks with the relays organized in K parallel paths between the source and the destination. While we assume that there is no direct source-destination path, the K relaying paths can interfere with each other. This paper studies the effectiveness of relaying for interference mitigation in an interference-limited communication scenario. We are motivated by the observation that in a cellular network, a relay node placed at the cell edge observes a combination of intended signal and inter-cell interference that is correlated with the received signal at a nearby destination, so a relaying link can effectively allow the antennas at the relay and at the destination to be pooled together for both signal enhancement and interference mitigation. We model this scenario by a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian relay channel with a digital relay-to-destination link of finite capacity, and with correlated noise across the relay and destination antennas. Assuming a compress-and-forward strategy with Gaussian input distribution and quantization noise, we propose a coordinate ascent algorithm for obtaining a stationary point of the non-convex joint optimization of the transmit and quantization covariance matrices. For fixed input distribution, the globally optimum quantization noise covariance matrix can be found in closed-form using a transformation for the relay’s observation that simultaneously diagonalizes two conditional covariance matrices by congruence. For fixed quantization, the globally optimum transmit covariance matrix can be found via convex optimization. This paper further shows that such an optimized achievable rate is within a constant additive gap of the MIMO relay channel capacity. The optimal structure of the quantization noise covariance enables a characterization of the slope of the achievable rate as a function of the relaying link capacity. Moreover, this paper shows that the improvement in spatial degrees of freedom by MIMO relaying in the presence of noise correlation is related to the aforementioned slope via a connection to the deterministic relay channel. The state-dependent Gaussian interference channel (IC) and Z-IC are investigated, in which two receivers are corrupted by the same but differently scaled states. The state sequence is noncausally known at both transmitters, but not known at either receiver. Three interference regimes are studied, i.e., the very strong, strong, and weak regimes. In the very strong regime, the capacity region is characterized under certain channel parameters by designing a cooperative dirty paper coding between the two transmitters to fully cancel the state. In the strong regime, points on the capacity region boundary are characterized under certain channel parameters by designing an achievable scheme based on rate splitting, layered dirty paper coding, and successive state cancellation. In the weak regime, the sum capacity is obtained by independent dirty paper coding at two transmitters. For all the above regimes, the capacity achieves that of the IC/Z-IC without state. Comparison between the state-dependent regular IC and the Z-IC suggests that even with one interference-free link, the Z-IC does not necessarily perform better, because dirty paper coded interference in the regular IC facilitates to cancel the state through the cooperative dirty paper coding between the transmitters. We investigate the state-dependent Gaussian wiretap channel with noncausal channel state information at the transmitter (GWTC-N-CSIT), and explore whether three strategies (i.e., taking action on the state, legitimate receiver’s channel output feedback, and combining the former two strategies together) help to enhance the secrecy capacity of the GWTC-N-CSIT. To be specific, we first determine the secrecy capacity of the GWTC-N-CSIT with noiseless feedback. Next, we derive lower and upper bounds on the secrecy capacity of the GWTC-N-CSIT with action-dependent state. Finally, we derive lower and upper bounds on the secrecy capacity of the GWTC-N-CSIT with both action-dependent state and noiseless feedback, and show that these bounds meet for a special case. Numerical results of this paper indicate that all three strategies enhance the secrecy capacity of the GWTC-N-CSIT. In wireless networks, the link connectivity may be intermittent due to shadowing, burstiness of data arrival, or uncoordinated resource allocation. In this paper, we model the intermittence of links as Bernoulli distributed random channel states, termed intermittence channel states, and study the impact of the corresponding channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) in a two-user Gaussian broadcast channel (BC). Moreover, due to the heterogeneous timeliness of intermittence channel states, the CSIT considered in this paper is hybrid. More specifically, the CSIT of each link can be perfectly (causally or non-causally) available, delayed, or not available. When the links are connected, we adopt a general setting that the received signal-to-noise ratios can be different. Our contribution is the characterization of the capacity regions of intermittent Gaussian BC to within bounded gaps for all combinations of hybrid CSIT, except for scenario DN (delayed CSIT of receiver 1, no CSIT of receiver 2). For scenario DN, we propose an opportunistic physical layer network coding scheme that achieves a strictly larger degree-of-freedom (DoF) region than the no-CSIT DoF region. As a corollary, single-user CSIT is able to increase the sum DoF for intermittent Gaussian BC (also the capacity region for the erasure BC, as a by-product). This result is in sharp contrast to the recent negative result by Davoodi and Jafar, where it is shown that for fast-fading multiple-input single-output BC with continuous channel states, single-user CSIT does not help at all in terms of sum DoF. In this paper, a general framework of constructing the optimal frequency-hopping sequence (FHS) sets is presented based on the designated direct product. Under this framework, we obtain infinitely many new optimal FHS sets by combining some one-coincide (OC) sequence sets that are newly constructed in this paper with some known optimal FHS sets. Our constructions are also based on extension method. However, our constructions give new and flexible parameters due to the free choice of OC sequence set. As a result, our constructions allow a great flexibility of choosing parameters of FHS sets for a given frequency-hopping spread spectrum system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In fog-aided cellular systems, content delivery latency can be minimized by jointly optimizing edge caching and transmission strategies. In order to account for the cache capacity limitations at the edge nodes (ENs), transmission generally involves both fronthaul transfer from a cloud processor with access to the content library to the ENs and wireless delivery from the ENs to the users. In this paper, the resulting problem is studied from an information-theoretic viewpoint by making the following practically relevant assumptions: 1) the ENs have multiple antennas; 2) only uncoded fractional caching is allowed; 3) the fronthaul links are used to send fractions of contents; and 4) the ENs are constrained to use one-shot linear zero-forcing precoding on the wireless channel. Assuming off-line proactive caching and focusing on a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) latency metric, the optimal information-theoretic performance is investigated under both serial and pipelined fronthaul-edge transmission modes. The analysis characterizes the minimum high-SNR latency in terms of normalized delivery time (NDT) for worst case users’ demands. The characterization is exact for a subset of system parameters and is generally optimal within a multiplicative factor of 3/2 for the serial case and 2 for the pipelined case. The results bring insights into the optimal interplay between edge and cloud processing in fog-aided wireless networks as a function of system resources, including the number of antennas at the ENs, the ENs’ cache capacity, and the fronthaul capacity. The state-dependent point-to-point Gaussian channel with a helper is first studied, in which a transmitter communicates with a receiver via a state-corrupted channel. The state is not known to the transmitter nor to the receiver, but known to a helper noncausally, which then wishes to assist the receiver to cancel the state. Differently from the previous work that characterized the capacity only in the infinite state power regime, this paper explores the general case with arbitrary state power. A lower bound on the capacity is derived based on an achievable scheme that integrates direct state subtraction and single-bin dirty paper coding. By analyzing this lower bound and further comparing it with the existing upper bounds, the capacity of the channel is characterized for a wide range of channel parameters. Such an idea of characterizing the capacity is further extended to study the two-user state-dependent multiple access channel with a helper. By comparing the derived inner and outer bounds, the channel parameters are partitioned into appropriate cases, and for each case, either segments on the capacity region boundary or the full capacity region are characterized. We investigate a probabilistic model for routeing in a multihop ad hoc communication network, where each user sends a message to the base station. Messages travel in hops via other users, used as relays. Their trajectories are chosen at random according to a Gibbs distribution, which favors trajectories with low interference, measured in terms of signal-to-interference ratio. This model was introduced in our earlier paper, where we expressed, in the limit of a high density of users, the typical distribution of the family of trajectories in terms of a law of large numbers. In this paper, we derive its qualitative properties. We analytically identify the emerging typical scenarios in three extreme regimes. We analyze the typical number of hops and the typical length of a hop and the deviation of the trajectory from the straight line, regime 1 in the limit of a large communication area and large distances and regime 2 in the limit of a strong interference weight. In both the regimes, the typical trajectory approaches a straight line quickly, in regime 1 with equal hop lengths. Interestingly, in regime 2, the typical length of a hop diverges logarithmically in the distance of the transmitter to the base station. Uplink-downlink duality refers to the fact that under a sum-power constraint, the capacity regions of a Gaussian multiple-access channel and a Gaussian broadcast channel with Hermitian transposed channel matrices are identical. This paper generalizes this result to a cooperative cellular network, in which remote access-points are deployed as relays in serving the users under the coordination of a central processor (CP). In this model, the users and the relays are connected over noisy wireless links, while the relays and the CP are connected over noiseless but rate-limited fronthaul links. Based on a Lagrangian technique, this paper establishes a duality relationship between such a multiple-access relay channel and broadcast relay channel, under the assumption that the relays use compression-based strategies. Specifically, we show that under the same total transmit power constraint and individual fronthaul rate constraints, the achievable rate regions of the Gaussian multiple-access and broadcast relay channels are identical, when either independent compression or Wyner-Ziv and multivariate compression strategies are used. The key observations are that if the beamforming vectors at the relays are fixed, the sum-power minimization problems under the achievable rate and fronthaul constraints in both the uplink and the downlink can be transformed into either a linear programming or a semidefinite programming problem depending on the compression technique, and that the uplink and downlink problems are Lagrangian duals of each other. Moreover, the dual variables corresponding to the downlink rate constraints become the uplink powers; the dual variables corresponding to the downlink fronthaul constraints become the uplink quantization noises. In the scalar dirty multiple-access channel, in addition to Gaussian noise, two additive interference signals are present, each known non-causally to a single transmitter. It was shown by Philosof et al. that for strong interferences, an independent identically distributed ensemble of codes does not achieve the capacity region. Rather, a structured-codes approach was presented that was shown to be optimal in the limit of high signal-to-noise ratios, where the sum capacity is dictated by the minimal (“bottleneck”) channel gain. In this paper, we consider the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) variant of this setting. In order to incorporate structured codes in this case, one can utilize matrix decompositions that transform the channel into effective parallel scalar dirty multiple-access channels. This approach, however, suffers from a “bottleneck” effect for each effective scalar channel and, therefore, the achievable rates strongly depend on the chosen decomposition. It is shown that a recently proposed decomposition, where the diagonals of the effective channel matrices are equal up to a scaling factor, is optimal at high signal-to-noise ratios, under an equal rank assumption. Jamming attacks can significantly impact the performance of wireless communication systems. In addition to reducing the capacity, such attacks may lead to insurmountable overhead in terms of retransmissions and increased power consumption. In this paper, we consider the multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channel (BC) in the presence of a jamming attack in which a subset of the receivers can be jammed at any given time. Further, countermeasures for mitigating the effects of such jamming attacks are presented. The effectiveness of these antijamming countermeasures is quantified in terms of the degrees-of-freedom (DoF) of the MISO BC under various assumptions regarding the availability of the channel state information (CSIT) and the jammer state information at the transmitter (JSIT). The main contribution of this paper is the characterization of the DoF region of the two user MISO BC under various assumptions on the availability of CSIT and JSIT. In literatures, there are various constructions of frequency hopping sequence (FHS for short) sets with good Hamming correlations. Some papers employed only multiplicative groups of finite fields to construct FHS sets, while other papers implicitly used only additive groups of finite fields for construction of FHS sets. In this paper, we make use of both multiplicative and additive groups of finite fields simultaneously to present a construction of optimal FHS sets. The construction provides a new family of optimal $\left ({{q}^{{m}}-1,\frac {{q}^{{m}-{t}}-1}{{r}},{\it{ rq}}^{{t}};\frac {{q}^{{m}-{t}}-1}{{r}}+1}\right)$ frequency hopping sequence sets archiving the Peng-Fan bound. Thus, some FHS sets constructed in literatures using either multiplicative groups or additive groups of finite fields are included in our family. This paper studies the two-user causal cognitive interference channel (CCIC), where two transmitters aim to communicate independent messages to two different receivers via a common channel. One source, referred to as the cognitive, is capable of overhearing the other source, referred to as the primary, through a noisy in-band link and thus can assist in sending the primary’s data. The authors of this paper recently characterized to within a constant gap the capacity of the symmetric Gaussian CCIC in: 1) the strong interference regime and 2) for a subset of the weak interference regime when the cooperation link is larger than a given threshold. This paper characterizes to within a constant gap the capacity for the symmetric Gaussian CCIC in the regime that was still open. To this end, two novel outer bounds of the types 2 R\mathsf {p}+ R\mathsf {c} and R\mathsf {p}+2 R\mathsf {c} are derived for the class of injective semideterministic CCICs, where the noises at the different source-destination pairs are independent. These outer bounds, as well as an achievable rate region based on Gelfand-Pinsker binning, superposition coding, and simultaneous decoding at the receivers, are then specialized to the Gaussian noise case. It is shown that the novel outer bounds are necessary to characterize the capacity within a constant gap when the cooperation link is weaker than the direct links, that is, in this regime unilateral cooperation leaves some system resources underutilized. In this paper, we study the wireline two-unicast-Z communication network over directed acyclic graphs. The two-unicast- $Z$ network is a two-unicast network where the destination intending to decode the second message has a priori side information of the first message. We make three contributions in this paper. First, we describe a new linear network coding algorithm for two-unicast-Z networks over the directed acyclic graphs. Our approach includes the idea of interference alignment as one of its key ingredients. For the graphs of a bounded degree, our algorithm has linear complexity in terms of the number of vertices, and the polynomial complexity in terms of the number of edges. Second, we prove that our algorithm achieves the rate pair (1, 1) whenever it is feasible in the network. Our proof serves as an alternative, albeit restricted to two-unicast-Z networks over the directed acyclic graphs, to an earlier result of Wang et al., which studied the necessary and sufficient conditions for the feasibility of the rate pair (1, 1) in two-unicast networks. The characterization of fundamental performance bounds of many-to-many communication systems in which participating nodes are active in an intermittent way is one of the major challenges in communication theory. In order to address this issue, we introduce the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) three-way channel (3WC) with an intermittent node and study its degrees-of-freedom (DoF) region and sum-DoF. We devise a non-adaptive encoding scheme based on zero-forcing, interference alignment, and erasure coding, and show its DoF region (and thus sum-DoF) optimality for non-intermittent 3WCs and its sum-DoF optimality for (node-) intermittent 3WCs. However, we show by example that in general some DoF tuples in the intermittent 3WC can only be achieved by adaptive schemes such as decode-forward relaying. This shows that non-adaptive encoding is sufficient for the non-intermittent 3WC and for the sum-DoF of intermittent 3WCs but adaptive encoding is necessary for the DoF region of intermittent 3WCs. This paper considers a Gaussian channel with one transmitter and two receivers. The goal is to maximize the communication rate at the intended/primary receiver subject to a disturbance constraint at the unintended/secondary receiver. The disturbance is measured in terms of the minimum mean square error (MMSE) of the interference that the transmission to the primary receiver inflicts on the secondary receiver. This paper presents a new upper bound for the problem of maximizing the mutual information subject to an MMSE constraint. The new bound holds for vector inputs of any length and recovers a previously known limiting (when the length of the vector input tends to infinity) expression from the work of Bustin et al. The key technical novelty is a new upper bound on the MMSE. This bound allows one to bound the MMSE for all signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values below a certain SNR at which the MMSE is known (which corresponds to the disturbance constraint). The bound also complements the “single-crossing point property” of the MMSE that upper bounds the MMSE for all SNR values above a certain value at which the MMSE value is known. The MMSE upper bound provides a refined characterization of the phase-transition phenomenon, which manifests, in the limit as the length of the vector input goes to infinity, as a discontinuity of the MMSE for the problem at hand. This paper characterizes the performance in terms of queueing stability of a network composed of multiple MIMO transmitter-receiver pairs taking into account the dynamic traffic pattern and the probing/feedback cost. We adopt a centralized scheduling scheme that selects a number of active pairs in each time-slot. We consider that the transmitters apply interference alignment (IA) technique if two or more pairs are active, whereas in the special case where one pair is active point-to-point MIMO singular value decomposition (SVD) is used. We consider a time-division duplex (TDD) system where transmitters acquire their channel state information (CSI) by decoding the pilot sequences sent by the receivers. Since global CSI knowledge is required for IA, the transmitters have also to exchange their estimated CSIs over a backhaul of limited capacity (i.e. imperfect case). Under this setting, we characterize in this paper the stability region of the system under both the imperfect and perfect (i.e. unlimited backhaul) cases, then we examine the gap between these two resulting regions. Further, under each case we provide a centralized probing policy that achieves the max stability region. These stability regions and scheduling policies are given for the symmetric system, where all the path loss coefficients are equal to each other, as well as for the general system. For the symmetric system, we provide the conditions under which IA yields a queueing stability gain compared to SVD. Under the general system, the adopted scheduling policy is of a high computational complexity for moderate numbers of pairs, consequently we propose an approximate policy that has a reduced complexity but that achieves only a fraction of the system stability region. This paper studies the fundamental tradeoff between storage and latency in a general wireless interference network with caches equipped at all transmitters and receivers. The tradeoff is characterized by an information-theoretic metric, normalized delivery time (NDT), which is the worst case delivery time of the actual traffic load at a transmission rate specified by degrees of freedom of a given channel. We obtain both an achievable upper bound and a theoretical lower bound of the minimum NDT for any number of transmitters, any number of receivers, and any feasible cache size tuple. We show that the achievable NDT is exactly optimal in certain cache size regions, and is within a bounded multiplicative gap to the theoretical lower bound in other regions. In the achievability analysis, we first propose a novel cooperative transmitter/receiver coded caching strategy. It offers the freedom to adjust file splitting ratios for NDT minimization. We then propose a delivery strategy that transforms the considered interference network into a new class of cooperative X-multicast channels. It leverages local caching gain, coded multicasting gain, and transmitter cooperation gain (via interference alignment and interference neutralization) opportunistically. Finally, the achievable NDT is obtained by solving a linear programming problem. This paper reveals that with caching at both transmitter and receiver sides, the network can benefit simultaneously from traffic load reduction and transmission rate enhancement, thereby effectively reducing the content delivery latency. Barcoding photons, atoms, and any quantum states can provide a host of functionalities that could benefit future quantum communication systems and networks beyond today’s imagination. As a significant application of barcoding photons, we introduce code division multiple-access (CDMA) communication systems for various applications. In this context, we introduce and discuss the fundamental principles of a novel quantum CDMA (QCDMA) technique based on spectrally encoding and decoding of continuous-mode quantum light pulses. In particular, we present the mathematical models of various QCDMA modules that are fundamental in describing an ideal and typical QCDMA system, such as quantum signal sources, quantum spectral encoding phase operators, M × M quantum broadcasting star-coupler, quantum spectral phase decoding operators, and the quantum receivers. Following the above discussions, we then elaborate on a QCDMA system with M users. In describing a QCDMA system, this paper considers a unified approach where the input continuous-mode quantum light pulses can take on any form of pure states such as quantum coherent (Glauber) states and quantum number (Fock) states. The mathematical presentation is independent of the form of the input pure quantum states. We show that the spectrally encoded quantum states of the light at the quantum star-coupler output are not, in general, factorized states, except for input Glauber states. For input number states, one can observe features like entanglement and quantum interference. Moreover and interestingly, as a consequence of Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, the quantum signals sent by photon number states obtain complete phase uncertainty at the time of measurement. Therefore, at the receiver output, the multiaccess inter-signal interference vanishes. Due to Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, the received signal intensity at the photodetector’s output, right at the time of measurement, changes from coherent detection scheme for input Glauber states to incoherent detection scheme for input number states. We also would like to highlight that the mathematical models and tools developed in this paper, in the context of QCDMA, become very useful for developing and analyzing other quantum multiple-access techniques based on wavelength, space and time domain. Furthermore, our mathematical model is valuable in signal design and data modulations of point-to-point quantum communications, quantum pulse shaping, and quantum radar signals and systems where the inputs are continuous mode quantum signals. We characterize the degrees-of-freedom (DoF) region of a class of two-unicast wireless networks under the assumption of delayed channel state information at the transmitters. We consider a layered topology with arbitrary connectivity, and we introduce new outer-bounds on the DoF region of such networks through the graph-theoretic notion of bottleneck nodes. Such nodes act as informational bottlenecks only under the assumption of delayed channel state information. We also present new transmission schemes that achieve the outer-bounds. We show that unlike the instantaneous channel state information model, the sum DoF of two-unicast networks with delayed channel knowledge can take an infinite set of values. In this paper, we design energy-efficient space constellations for multiuser multi-input single-output visible light communication broadcast systems with channel state information (CSI) at the receiver in the three scenarios: 1) with CSI at the transmitter (CSIT); 2) with statistical CSIT; and 3) without CSIT. By utilizing the cooperation of multiuser interference, optimal multidimensional additively uniquely decomposable constellation groups are designed to optimize the received worst case performance metrics of all users subject to two commonly used power constraints, i.e., average and peak optical power constraints. The resulting optimal designs are proved to be pulse amplitude modulated with an optimal beamformer, which can be efficiently attained by numerical search for Scenarios 1 and 2 and be given in a closed form for Scenario 3. One of the common significant advantages of these designs is the fast demodulation of the sum signal from a noisy received signal, since these optimal designs result in an equivalent ideal scalar AWGN channel. This paper studies the asymptotic properties of average area spectral efficiency (ASE) of a downlink cellular network in the limit of very dense base station (BS) and user densities. This asymptotic analysis relies on three assumptions: 1) interference is treated as noise; 2) the BS locations are drawn from a Poisson point process; and 3) the path loss function is bounded above satisfying mild regularity conditions. We consider three possible definitions of the average ASE, all of which give units of bits per second per unit bandwidth per unit area. When there is no constraint on the minimum operational signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and instantaneous full channel state information (CSI) is available at the transmitter, the average ASE is proven to saturate to a constant, which we derive in a closed form. For the other two ASE definitions, wherein either a minimum SINR is enforced or CSI is not available, the average ASE is instead shown to collapse to zero at high BS density. We provide several familiar case studies for the class of considered path loss models, and demonstrate that our results cover most previous models and results on ultradense networks as special cases. The topological interference management (TIM) problem refers to the study of the $K$ -user partially connected interference networks with no channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT), except for the knowledge of network topology. In this paper, we study the TIM problem with confidential messages (TIM-CM), where message confidentiality must be satisfied in addition to reliability constraints. In particular, each transmitted message must be decodable at its intended receiver and remain confidential at the remaining $(K-1)$ receivers. Our main contribution is to present a comprehensive set of results for the TIM-CM problem by studying the symmetric secure degrees of freedom (SDoF). To this end, we first characterize necessary and sufficient conditions for feasibility of positive symmetric SDoF for any arbitrary topology. We next present two achievable schemes for the TIM-CM problem: For the first scheme, we use the concept of secure partition and, for the second one, we use the concept of secure independent sets. We also present outer bounds on symmetric SDoF for any arbitrary network topology. In this paper, the capacity region of the linear deterministic interference channel with noisy channel-output feedback (LD-IC-NF) is fully characterized. The proof of achievability is based on random coding arguments and rate splitting, block-Markov superposition coding, and backward decoding. The proof of the converse reuses some of the existing outer bounds and includes new ones obtained using genie-aided models. Following the insight gained from the analysis of the LD-IC-NF, an achievability region and a converse region for the two-user Gaussian interference channel with noisy channel-output feedback (G-IC-NF) are presented. In this paper, we examine the benefits of multiple antenna communication in random wireless networks, the topology of which is modeled by stochastic geometry. The setting is the Poisson bipolar model introduced in [1], which is a natural model for ad-hoc and device-to-device networks. The primary finding is that, with the knowledge of channel state information between a receiver and its associated transmitter, by zero-forcing successive interference cancellation, and for appropriate antenna configurations, the ergodic spectral efficiency can be made to scale linearly with both: 1) the minimum of the number of transmit and receive antennas and 2) the density of nodes. This scaling law is achieved by using the multiple transmit antennas to send multiple data streams (e.g., through an open-loop transmission method) and by exploiting the receive antennas to cancel interference. Furthermore, when a receiver is able to learn channel state information from a certain number of near interferers, higher scaling gains can be achieved when a successive interference cancellation method is used. Both results require rich scattering environments. A major implication of the derived scaling laws is that, under this scattering assumption, spatial multiplexing transmission methods are essential for obtaining better and eventually optimal scaling laws in random wireless networks with multiple antennas. In 1975, Carleial presented a special case of an interference channel, called the very strong interference regime, in which the interference does not reduce the capacity of the constituent point-to-point Gaussian channels. In this paper, we show that in the strictly very strong interference regime, the dispersions are similarly unaffected. More precisely, in this paper, we characterize the second-order coding rates of the Gaussian interference channel in the strictly very strong interference regime. In other words, we characterize the speed of convergence of rates of optimal block codes toward a boundary point of the (rectangular) capacity region. These second-order coding rates are expressed in terms of the average probability of error and variances of appropriately defined information densities which coincide with the dispersion of the (single-user) Gaussian channel. In multiuser information theory, it is often assumed that every node in the network possesses all codebooks used in the network. This assumption may be impractical in distributed ad hoc, cognitive, or heterogeneous networks. This paper considers the two-user interference channel with one oblivious receiver (IC-OR), i.e., one receiver lacks knowledge of the interfering cookbook, whereas the other receiver knows both codebooks. This paper asks whether, and if so how much, the channel capacity of the IC-OR is reduced compared with that of the classical IC where both receivers know all codebooks. A novel outer bound is derived and shown to be achievable to within a gap for the class of injective semideterministic IC-ORs; the gap is shown to be zero for injective fully deterministic IC-ORs. An exact capacity result is shown for the general memoryless IC-OR when the nonoblivious receiver experiences very strong interference. For the linear deterministic IC-OR that models the Gaussian noise channel at high SNR, nonindependent identically distributed. Bernoulli(1/2) input bits are shown to achieve points not achievable by i.i.d. Bernoulli(1/2) input bits used in the same achievability scheme. For the real-valued Gaussian IC-OR, the gap is shown to be at most 1/2 bit per channel use, even though the set of optimal input distributions for the derived outer bound could not be determined. Toward understanding the Gaussian IC-OR, an achievability strategy is evaluated in which the input alphabets at the nonoblivious transmitter are a mixture of discrete and Gaussian random variables, where the cardinality of the discrete part is appropriately chosen as a function of the channel parameters. Surprisingly, as the oblivious receiver intuitively should not be able to jointly decode the intended and interfering messages (whose codebook is unavailable), it is shown that with this choice of input, the capacity region of the symmetric Gaussian IC-OR is to within 1/2\log \left (12\pi \mathrm e \right )\approx 3.34 bits (per channel use per user) of an outer bound for the classical Gaussian IC with full codebook knowledge at both receivers. This paper analyzes the performance of discrete input distributions (coded modulation) in interference channels. This approach is motivated in part by the necessity of using coded modulation in practical systems, and in part by the potential of discrete distributions for interference alignment as well as the importance demonstrated by Dytso et al. of discrete input distributions for transmission over the $2\times 2$ interference channel when treating interference as noise. The contribution of this work includes the establishment of achievable rates subject to discrete modulations. In the process, new bounds involving the minimum distance of the sum of discrete modulations have been developed that are useful for facilitating further work in this area. These bounds are then used for finding achievable rates for $3\times 3$ interference channels. It is also shown that interference alignment can be efficiently employed with discrete modulations at finite SNR even with imperfect channel state information at the transmitter. In this paper, we consider the simultaneous connectivity of primary and secondary networks forming a cognitive model. It is assumed that the cognitive model includes guard zones that prevent the nodes of the secondary network from being active in the vicinity of primary nodes to limit interference. Under these assumptions, we characterize the region of densities, the transmission radii of the nodes in each of the networks, and the guard zones for which the two networks have a unique unbounded connected component. We prove that this model is feasible, that is, there exists simultaneous connectivity with the unique unbounded connected component in each of the networks. Data shuffling between distributed cluster of nodes is one of the critical steps in implementing large-scale learning algorithms. Randomly shuffling the data-set among a cluster of workers allows different nodes to obtain fresh data assignments at each learning epoch. This process has been shown to provide improvements in the learning process (via testing and training error). However, the statistical benefits of distributed data shuffling come at the cost of extra communication overhead from the master node to worker nodes, and can act as one of the major bottlenecks in the overall time for computation. There has been significant recent interest in devising approaches to minimize this communication overhead. One approach is to provision for extra storage at the computing nodes. The other emerging approach is to leverage coded communication to minimize the overall communication overhead. The focus of this work is to understand the fundamental tradeoff between the amount of storage and the communication overhead for distributed data shuffling. In this paper, we first present an information theoretic formulation for the data shuffling problem, accounting for the underlying problem parameters (number of workers, $K$ , number of data points, $N$ , and available storage, and $S$ per node). We then present an information theoretic lower bound on the communication overhead for data shuffling as a function of these parameters. We next present a novel coded communication scheme and show that the resulting communication overhead of the proposed scheme is within a multiplicative factor of at most $\frac {K}{K-1}$ from the lower bound (which is upper bounded by 2 for $K\geq 2$). Furthermore, we present new results towards closing this gap through a novel coded communication scheme, which we call the aligned coded shuffling. This scheme is inspired by the ideas of coded shuffling and interference alignment. In particular, we show that the aligned scheme achieves the optimal storage vs communication trade-off for $K < 5$ , and further reduces the maximum multiplicative gap down to $\frac {K-\frac {1}{3}}{K-1}$ , for $K\geq 5$. In this paper, we explore the information-theoretic optimality of treating interference as noise (TIN) in cellular networks. We focus on uplink scenarios modeled by the Gaussian interfering multiple access channel (IMAC), comprising $K$ mutually interfering multiple access channels (MACs), each formed by an arbitrary number of transmitters communicating independent messages to one receiver. We define TIN for this setting as a scheme in which each MAC (or cell) performs a power-controlled version of its capacity-achieving strategy, with Gaussian codebooks and successive decoding, while treating interference from all other MACs (i.e., inter-cell interference) as noise. We characterize the generalized degrees-of-freedom (GDoF) region achieved through the proposed TIN scheme, and then identify conditions under which this achievable region is convex without the need for time-sharing. We then tighten these convexity conditions and identify a regime in which the proposed TIN scheme achieves the entire GDoF region of the IMAC and is within a constant gap of the entire capacity region. The question of whether the degrees of freedom (DoF) of multiuser networks can be enhanced even under isotropic fading and no channel state information or output feedback at the transmitters (CSIT) is investigated. Toward this end, the two-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast and interference channels are studied with no side-information at the transmitters and with receivers equipped with full-duplex radios. The full-duplex feature allows for receiver cooperation because each receiver, in addition to receiving the signals sent by the transmitters, can also simultaneously transmit a signal in the same band to the other receiver. Unlike the case of MIMO networks with CSIT and full-duplex receivers, for which DoF are known, it is shown that for MIMO networks with no CSIT, full-duplex receiver cooperation is beneficial to such an extent that even the DoF region is enhanced. Indeed, for important classes of two-user MIMO broadcast and interference channels, defined by certain relationships on numbers of antennas at different terminals, the exact DoF regions are established. The key to achieving DoF-optimal performance for such networks are new retro-cooperative interference alignment schemes. Their optimality is established via the DoF analysis of certain genie-aided or enhanced version of those networks. Taken together, the results of this paper show that full-duplex receiver cooperation can recover the DoF lost due to lack of CSIT. Motivated by the looming capacity crunch in fiber-optic networks, information transmission over such systems is revisited. Among numerous distortions, interchannel interference in multiuser wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) is identified as the seemingly intractable factor limiting the achievable rate at high launch power. However, this distortion and similar ones arising from nonlinearity are primarily due to the use of methods suited for linear systems, namely WDM and linear pulse-train transmission, for the nonlinear optical channel. Exploiting the integrability of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation, a nonlinear frequency-division multiplexing (NFDM) scheme is presented, which directly modulates noninteracting signal degrees-of-freedom under NLS propagation. The main distinction between this and previous methods is that NFDM is able to cope with the nonlinearity, and thus, as the signal power or transmission distance is increased, the new method does not suffer from the deterministic crosstalk between signal components, which has degraded the performance of previous approaches. In this paper, emphasis is placed on modulation of the discrete component of the nonlinear Fourier transform of the signal and some simple examples of achievable spectral efficiencies are provided. In this paper, we study the problem of the optimal dissemination of channel state information (CSI) among $K$ spatially distributed transmitters (TXs) jointly cooperating to serve $K$ receivers. One of the particularities of this paper lies in the fact that the CSI is distributed in the sense that each TX obtains its own estimate of the global multiuser MIMO channel with no further exchange of information being allowed between the TXs. Although this is well suited to model the cooperation between noncolocated TXs, e.g., in cellular coordinated multipoint schemes, this type of setting has received little attention so far in the information theoretic society. We study in this paper what are the CSI requirements at every TX, as a function of the network geometry, to ensure that the maximal number of degrees-of-freedom (DoF) is achieved, i.e., the same DoF as obtained under perfect CSI at all TXs. We advocate the use of the generalized DoF to take into account the geometry of the network in the analysis. Consistent with the intuition, the derived generalized DoF maximizing CSI allocation policy suggests that TX cooperation should be limited to a specific finite neighborhood around each TX. This is in sharp contrast with the conventional (uniform) CSI dissemination policy, which induces CSI requirements that grow unbounded with the network size. The proposed CSI allocation policy suggests an alternative to clustering, which overcomes fundamental limitations, such as: 1) edge interference and 2) unbounded increase of the CSIT requirements with the cluster size. Finally, we show how finite neighborhood CSIT exchange translates into finite neighborhood message exchange so that finally global interference management is possible at finite SNR with only local cooperation. This paper addresses a decentralized wireless networks of K separate transmitter-receiver pairs. Users treat each other as noise and there is no central controller to assign the resources to the users. Each user randomly spreads the symbols in its Gaussian codewords by the so-called signatures of spreading gain N . Any receiver is aware of the signatures of its affiliated transmitter, however, it is unaware of the signatures of other users. This makes the interference plus noise at each receiver be mixed Gaussian, and hence, there is no closed expression for the achievable rates of users. Invoking conditional entropy power inequality and a key upper bound on the differential entropy of a mixed Gaussian random vector, we develop a lower bound on the achievable rates of users. This lower bound has the same signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) scaling as that of the exact achievable rate. It is shown that the sum multiplexing gain (SMG) in the network can be made arbitrarily close to (K/N) for any finite values of K and N where K\leq N . The effect of matched filtering is studied in the particular case where the signatures are constructed over a binary alphabet. It is established that the SMG of the network is larger than (1/2e) regardless of the value of K as long as $N=2$ and the signatures are generated according to a proper nonuniform distribution. This paper is concluded by a section on signature design in the finite SNR regime. The main observation is that for any two different methods A and B of designing the signatures, if method A results in a larger achievable rate per user for sufficiently large SNR values, then construction B is likely to yield larger achievable rates for sufficiently small values of SNR. In this paper, we initiate a first information-theoretic study on multilevel NAND flash memory channels with intercell interference. More specifically, for a multilevel NAND flash memory channel under mild assumptions, we first prove that such a channel is indecomposable and it features asymptotic equipartition property; we then further prove that stationary processes achieve its information capacity, and consequently, as the order tends to infinity, its Markov capacity converges to its information capacity; eventually, we establish that its operational capacity is equal to its information capacity. Our results suggest that it is highly plausible to apply the ideas and techniques in the computation of the capacity of finite-state channels, which are relatively better explored, to that of the capacity of multilevel NAND flash memory channels. Building on the recent coded-caching breakthrough by Maddah-Ali and Niesen, the work here considers the $K$ -user cache-aided wireless multi-antenna symmetric broadcast channel with random fading and imperfect feedback, and analyzes the throughput performance as a function of feedback statistics and cache size. In this setting, this paper identifies the optimal cache-aided degrees-of-freedom (DoF) within a factor of 4, by identifying near-optimal schemes that exploit a new synergy between coded caching and delayed CSIT, as well as by exploiting the unexplored interplay between caching and feedback-quality. The DoF expressions reveal an initial gain due to current CSIT, and an additional gain due to coded caching, which is exponential in the sense that any linear decrease in the required DoF performance, allows for an exponential reduction in the required cache size. In the end, this paper reveals three new aspects of caching: a synergy between memory and delayed feedback, a tradeoff between memory and current CSIT, and a powerful ability to provide cache-aided feedback savings. The degrees of freedom (DoFs) of the $K$ -user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channel are studied when perfect, but delayed channel state information is available at the transmitter side (delayed CSIT). Recent works have proposed schemes improving the DoF knowledge of the interference channel, but at the cost of developing transmission involving many channel uses (long delay), thus increasing the complexity at both transmitter and receiver side. This paper proposes three linear precoding strategies, limited to at most three phases, based on the concept of interference alignment, and built upon three main ingredients: delayed CSIT precoding, user scheduling, and redundancy transmission. In this respect, the interference alignment is realized by exploiting delayed CSIT to align the interference at the non-intended receivers along the space-time domain. Moreover, a new framework is proposed where the number of transmitted symbols and duration of the phases is obtained as the solution of a maximization problem, and enabling the introduction of complexity constraints, which allows deriving the achievable DoF as a function of the transmission delay, i.e., the achievable DoF-delay trade-off. In this paper, we develop achievability schemes for symmetric $K$ -user interference channels with a rate-limited feedback from each receiver to the corresponding transmitter. We study this problem under two different channel models: the linear deterministic model, and the Gaussian model. For the deterministic model, the proposed scheme achieves a symmetric rate that is the minimum of the symmetric capacity with infinite feedback, and the sum of the symmetric capacity without feedback and the symmetric amount of feedback. For the Gaussian interference channel, we use lattice codes to propose a transmission strategy that incorporates the techniques of Han–Kobayashi message splitting, interference decoding, and decode and forward. This strategy achieves a symmetric rate, which is within a constant number of bits to the minimum of the symmetric capacity with infinite feedback, and the sum of the symmetric capacity without feedback and the amount of symmetric feedback. This constant is obtained as a function of the number of users, $K$ . We note that for the special case of Gaussian IC with $K = 2$ , our proposed achievability scheme results in a symmetric rate that is within at most 21.085 bits/s/Hz of the outer bound, which is the first constant gap bound despite the constant gap claim in [1]. The symmetric achievable rate is used to characterize the achievable generalized degrees of freedom, which exhibits a gradual increase from no feedback to perfect feedback in the presence of feedback links with limited capacity. This paper studies the capacity region when three nodes \ \mathsf 1, \mathsf 2, \mathsf 3\ communicate with each other by sending packets through unreliable wireless medium. For each time slot, with some probabilities a packet sent by node $i$ may be received by both of the other nodes $j$ and $k$ ; received only by node $j$ (or node $k$ ); or received by neither node. Interference is avoided by enforcing that at most one node can transmit in each time slot. We assume that node $i$ can always reach node $j$ , possibly with the help of the third node $k$ , for any $i \neq j$ pairs (thus the term fully connected). This paper considers the optimum single cell power control maximizing the aggregate (uplink) communication rate of the cell when there are peak power constraints at mobile users, and a low-complexity data decoder (without successive decoding) at the base station. It is shown that the optimum power allocation is binary, which means that links are either “on” or “off.” By exploiting further structure of the optimum binary power allocation, a simple polynomial-time algorithm for finding the optimum transmission power allocation is proposed, together with a reduced complexity near-optimal heuristic algorithm. Sufficient conditions under which channel-state aware time division multiple access (TDMA) maximizes the aggregate communication rate are established. In a numerical study, we compare and contrast the performance achieved by the optimum binary power-control policy with other suboptimum policies and the throughput capacity achievable via successive decoding. It is observed that two dominant modes of communication arise, wideband or TDMA, and that successive decoding achieves better sum-rates only under near perfect interference cancellation efficiency. In this paper, we exploit the theory of majorization to obtain the aforementioned results. In the final part of this paper, we do so to solve power-control problems in the areas of femtocells and cognitive radio and find that, again, optimal solutions have a binary (or almost binary) character. In this paper, we study spatial degree-of-freedom (DOF) for two mutually interfering broadcast channels (IBC). As the demand for space-division multiple access (SDMA) increases, the IBC where each link has a single transmit node and multiple receive nodes becomes important. This paper presents the results of the lower and upper bounds on the DOF of the IBC. From the derived results, it is shown that for most cases, zero-forcing (ZF) beamforming can achieve the optimal DOF of the IBC except for some special cases. Also, we identify a condition that disabling receive cooperation in the multiple-input multiple-output interference channels causes no DOF loss. It is confirmed that we cannot expect a DOF improvement by enabling in-cell receive cooperation if in at least one of two BSs, the number of antennas is greater than or equal to that of users per cell. Furthermore, we observe a positive result that as the number of users goes to infinity, the total DOF of the IBC converges to the interference-free DOF, which is the maximum achievable DOF in the absence of the inter-cell interference. In a distributed storage system, recovering from multiple failures is a critical and frequent task that is crucial for maintaining the system’s reliability and fault-tolerance. In this paper, we focus on the problem of repairing multiple failures in a centralized way, which can be desirable in many data storage configurations; furthermore, we show that a significant repair traffic reduction is possible. First, the fundamental trade-off between the repair bandwidth and the storage size for functional repair is established. Using a graph-theoretic formulation, the optimal tradeoff is identified as the solution to an integer optimization problem, for which a closed-form expression is derived. Expressions of the extreme points, namely the minimum storage multi-node repair (MSMR) and minimum bandwidth multi-node repair (MBMR) points, are obtained. Second, we describe a general framework for converting single erasure minimum storage regenerating codes to MSMR codes. The repair strategy for $e$ failures is similar to that for a single failure; however, certain extra requirements need to be satisfied by the repairing functions for a single failure. For illustration, the framework is applied to product-matrix codes and interference alignment codes. Furthermore, we prove that the functional MBMR point is not achievable for linear exact-repair codes. We also show that the exact-repair minimum bandwidth cooperative repair codes achieve an interior point, that lies near the MBMR point, when $k \equiv 1 \mod e$ , $k$ being the minimum number of nodes needed to reconstruct the entire data. Finally, for $k> 2e, e\mid k$ , and $e \mid d$ , where $d$ is the number of helper nodes during repair, we show that the functional repair trade-off is not achievable under exact repair, except for maybe a small portion near the MSMR point, which parallels the results for single-erasure repair by Shah et al. In order to evaluate the goodness of frequency hopping (FH) sequence design, the periodic Hamming correlation function is used as an important measure. Usually, the length of correlation window is shorter than the period of the chosen FH sequence, so the study of the partial Hamming correlation of FH sequence is particularly important. If an FH sequence or an FH sequence set has an optimal partial Hamming correlation with respect to the partial Hamming correlation bound for all length of correlation window, then the FH sequence or the FH sequence set is said to be strictly optimal. In this paper, we first prove that there is no strictly optimal FH sequence set of family size $M$ and sequence length $N$ over a frequency slot set of size $q$ with respect to the partial Hamming correlation bound derived by Niu et al. when $N>{q^{2}}/{M}$ and $q\geq 2$ , and that by Cai et al. when $N>{q^{2}}/{M}$ and $q\geq {2N}/({N-2})$. Furthermore, we define a special partition-type difference packing (DP) called $[N,\nabla,H_{a}^{l}]$ PDP and give several classes of $[N,\nabla,H_{a}^{l}]$ PDPs. Then, we present a new construction of strictly optimal FH sequences. By choosing different PDPs, the FH sequences constructed can give new and flexible parameters. By utilizing this construction method recursively, we can obtain new $[N,\nabla,H_{a}^{l}]$ PDPs, which lead to infinitely many classes of strictly optimal FH sequences with new parameters. Moreover, based upon an $[N,\nabla,H_{a}^{l}]$ PDP, we present a construction of strictly optimal FH sequence sets. By preceding construction method and recursive construction, we can also obtain infinite classes of strictly optimal FH sequence sets which can give new and flexible parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
