In wireless networks, the link connectivity may be intermittent due to shadowing, burstiness of data arrival, or uncoordinated resource allocation. In this paper, we model the intermittence of links as Bernoulli distributed random channel states, termed intermittence channel states, and study the impact of the corresponding channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) in a two-user Gaussian broadcast channel (BC). Moreover, due to the heterogeneous timeliness of intermittence channel states, the CSIT considered in this paper is hybrid. More specifically, the CSIT of each link can be perfectly (causally or non-causally) available, delayed, or not available. When the links are connected, we adopt a general setting that the received signal-to-noise ratios can be different. Our contribution is the characterization of the capacity regions of intermittent Gaussian BC to within bounded gaps for all combinations of hybrid CSIT, except for scenario DN (delayed CSIT of receiver 1, no CSIT of receiver 2). For scenario DN, we propose an opportunistic physical layer network coding scheme that achieves a strictly larger degree-of-freedom (DoF) region than the no-CSIT DoF region. As a corollary, single-user CSIT is able to increase the sum DoF for intermittent Gaussian BC (also the capacity region for the erasure BC, as a by-product). This result is in sharp contrast to the recent negative result by Davoodi and Jafar, where it is shown that for fast-fading multiple-input single-output BC with continuous channel states, single-user CSIT does not help at all in terms of sum DoF. This paper considers a caching system of a single server and multiple users. We aim to characterize the memory-rate tradeoff for caching with uncoded cache placement, under nonuniform file popularity. Focusing on the modified coded caching scheme (MCCS) recently proposed by Yu, etal., we formulate the cache placement optimization problem for the MCCS to minimize the average delivery rate under nonuniform file popularity, restricting to a class of popularity-first placements. We then present two information-theoretic lower bounds on the average rate for caching with uncoded placement, one for general cache placements and the other restricted to the popularity-first placements. By comparing the average rate of the optimized MCCS with the lower bounds, we prove that the optimized MCCS attains the general lower bound for the two-user case, providing the exact memory-rate tradeoff. Furthermore, it attains the popularity-first-based lower bound for the case of general $K$ users with distinct file requests. In these two cases, our results also reveal that the popularity-first placement is optimal for the MCCS, and zero-padding used in coded delivery incurs no loss of optimality. For the case of $K$ users with redundant file requests, our analysis shows that there may exist a gap between the optimized MCCS and the lower bounds due to zero-padding. We next fully characterize the optimal popularity-first cache placement for the MCCS, which is shown to possess a simple file-grouping structure and can be computed via an efficient algorithm using closed-form expressions. Finally, we extend our study to accommodate nonuniformity in both file popularity and size, where we show that the optimized MCCS attains the lower bound for the two-user case, providing the exact memory-rate tradeoff. This paper studies a memoryless state-dependent multiple access channel (MAC) where two transmitters wish to convey a message to a receiver under the assumption of causal and imperfect channel state information at transmitters (CSIT) and imperfect channel state information at receiver (CSIR). In order to emphasize the limitation of transmitter cooperation between physically distributed nodes, we focus on the so-called distributed CSIT assumption, i.e., where each transmitter has its individual channel knowledge, while the message can be assumed to be partially or entirely shared a priori between transmitters by exploiting some on-board memory. Under this setup, the first part of the paper characterizes the common message capacity of the channel at hand for arbitrary CSIT and CSIR structure. The optimal scheme builds on Shannon strategies, i.e., optimal codes are constructed by letting the channel inputs be a function of current CSIT only. For a special case when CSIT is a deterministic function of CSIR, the considered scheme also achieves the capacity region of a common message and two private messages. The second part addresses an important instance of the previous general result in a context of a cooperative multi-antenna Gaussian channel under i.i.d. fading operating in frequency-division duplex mode, such that CSIT is acquired via an explicit feedback of perfect CSIR. The capacity of the channel at hand is achieved by distributed linear precoding applied to Gaussian codes. Surprisingly, we demonstrate that it is suboptimal to send a number of data streams bounded by the number of transmit antennas as typically considered in a centralized CSIT setup. Let $n$ be a positive integer and $p$ a prime. The power mapping $x^{p^{n}-3}$ over ${\mathbb {F}}_{p^{n}}$ has desirable differential properties, and its differential spectra for $p=2,\,3$ have been determined. In this paper, for any odd prime $p$ , by investigating certain quadratic character sums and some equations over ${\mathbb {F}}_{p^{n}}$ , we determine the differential spectrum of $x^{p^{n}-3}$ with a unified approach. The obtained result shows that for any given odd prime $p$ , the differential spectrum can be expressed explicitly in terms of $n$. Compared with previous results, a special elliptic curve over ${\mathbb {F}}_{p}$ plays an important role in our computation for the general case $p \ge 5$. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper aims to characterize the capacity limits of a wireless cellular network with a full-duplex (FD) base-station (BS) and half-duplex user terminals, in which three independent messages are communicated: the uplink message m1 from the uplink user to the BS, the downlink message m2 from the BS to the downlink user, and the device-to-device (D2D) message m3 from the uplink user to the downlink user. From an information theoretical perspective, the overall network can be viewed as a generalization of the FD relay broadcast channel with a side message transmitted from the relay to the destination. We begin with a simpler case that involves the uplink and downlink transmissions of (m1, m2) only, and propose an achievable rate region based on a novel strategy that uses the BS as a FD relay to facilitate the interference cancellation at the downlink user. We also prove a new converse, which is strictly tighter than the cut-set bound, and characterize the capacity region of the scalar Gaussian FD network without a D2D message to within a constant gap. This paper further studies a general setup wherein (m1, m2, m3) are communicated simultaneously. To account for the D2D message, we incorporate Marton’s broadcast coding into the previous scheme to obtain a larger achievable rate region than the existing ones in the literature. We also improve the cut-set bound by means of genie and show that by using one of the two simple rate-splitting schemes, the capacity region of the scalar Gaussian FD network with a D2D message can already be reached to within a constant gap. Finally, a generalization to the vector Gaussian channel case is discussed. This paper proposes a new model for wireless relay networks referred to as “1-2-1 network”, where two nodes can communicate only if they point “beams” at each other, otherwise no signal can be exchanged or interference can be generated. This model is motivated by millimeter wave communications where, due to the high path loss, a link between two nodes can exist only if beamforming gain at both sides is established, while in the absence of beamforming gain the signal is received well below the thermal noise floor. The main contributions in this paper include: (a) the development of a constant gap approximation for the unicast and multicast capacities of the proposed network model, i.e., a characterization of the network unicast and multicast capacities to within an additive gap, which only depends on the number of nodes and is independent of the channel coefficients and operating SNR; and (b) the design of algorithms that run in polynomial time in the number of nodes and compute the approximate unicast and multicast capacities, as well as their corresponding optimal beam scheduling strategies. These results are derived both for full-duplex and half-duplex modes of operation at the relays: while in full-duplex the transmit and receive beams at a relay can be simultaneously active, in half-duplex only one can be active at each point in time. The relation between the approximate multicast capacity and minimum unicast capacity is explored in full-duplex 1-2-1 networks and shown to be dependent on the network structure and the number of destinations, unlike in classical wireless (i.e., without 1-2-1 constraints) full-duplex networks. Cooperative beamforming is a potentially useful technique for enhancing link reliability in modern wireless relay communications. To aid the beamforming design, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the source-to-relay (S-R) channel links must be known at the destination node. Abdallah and Papadopoulos in IEEE Trans. Signal Processing, vol. 56, no. 10, 2008, proposed a beamforming system with relay-assisted SNR acquisition; that is, the S-R link SNR is first quantized at each relay and is then forwarded to the destination. An optimal quantizer design problem was proposed in that paper, aiming at reducing the system bit error rate; however, only the binary quantization case was considered therein, with the quantization threshold computed by a suggested rule of thumb. In this paper, we study the aforementioned quantizer design problem in the general multiple-bit setting. We show that the solutions to the first-order necessary condition for optimality can be obtained as a fixed point of a certain nonlinear map over the feasible threshold set. The existence and uniqueness of the fixed point are established by using, respectively, the Brouwer’s and Schauder’s fixed point theorems. Finally, we show that the fixed point thus obtained yields the globally optimal set of quantization thresholds. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first which leverages fixed point theories to rigorously solve SNR quantization problems in the context of wireless relay communication. Consider a (multiple-access) wireless communication system where users are connected to a unique base station over a shared-spectrum radio links. Each user has a fixed number k of bits to send to the base station, and his signal gets attenuated by a random channel gain (quasi-static fading). In this paper we consider the many-user asymptotics of Chen-Chen-Guo’2017, where the number of users grows linearly with the blocklength. Differently, though, we adopt a per-user probability of error (PUPE) criterion (as opposed to classical joint-error probability criterion). Under PUPE the finite energy-per-bit communication is possible, and we are able to derive bounds on the tradeoff between energy and spectral efficiencies. We reconfirm the curious behaviour (previously observed for non-fading MAC) of the possibility of almost perfect multi-user interference (MUI) cancellation for user densities below a critical threshold. Further, we demonstrate the suboptimality of standard solutions such as orthogonalization (i.e. TDMA/FDMA) and treating interference as noise (i.e. pseudo-random CDMA without multi-user detection). Notably, the problem treated here can be seen as a variant of support recovery in compressed sensing for the unusual definition of sparsity with one non-zero entry per each contiguous section of 2k coordinates. This identifies our problem with that of the sparse regression codes (SPARCs) and hence our results can be equivalently understood in the context of SPARCs with sections of length 2100. The two-user multiple-input multiple-output Gaussian broadcast channel with common, private, and confidential messages is considered. The transmitter sends a common message to both users, a confidential message to the User 1 and a private (non-confidential) message to the User 2. The secrecy-capacity region is characterized by showing that certain inner and outer bounds coincide and that the boundary points are achieved by Gaussian inputs, which enables the development of a tight converse. The proof relies on the factorization of upper concave envelopes and a variant of dirty-paper coding (DPC). It is shown that the entire region is exhausted by using DPC to cancel out the signal of the non-confidential message at Receiver 1, thus making DPC against the signal of the confidential message unnecessary. In this paper, we consider a channel model that is often used to describe mobile wireless scenarios: multiple-antenna additive white Gaussian noise channels subject to random (fading) gains with full channel state information at the receiver. The dynamics of the fading process are approximated by a piecewise-constant process (frequency non-selective isotropic block fading). This paper addresses the finite blocklength fundamental limits of this channel model. Specifically, we give a formula for the channel dispersion—a quantity governing the delay required to achieve capacity. The multiplicative nature of the fading disturbance leads to a number of interesting technical difficulties that required us to enhance traditional methods for finding the channel dispersion. Alas, one difficulty remains: the converse (impossibility) part of our result holds under an extra constraint on the growth of the peak-power with blocklength. Our results demonstrate, for example, that while the capacities of $n_{t}\times n_{r}$ and $n_{r} \times n_{t}$ antenna configurations coincide (under fixed received power), the coding delay can be sensitive to this switch. For example, at the received SNR of 20 dB, the $16\times 100$ system achieves capacity with codes of length (delay) which is only 60% of the length required for the $100\times 16$ system. Another interesting implication is that for the MISO channel, the dispersion-optimal coding schemes require employing orthogonal designs such as Alamouti’s scheme—a surprising observation considering the fact that Alamouti’s scheme was designed for reducing demodulation errors, not improving coding rate. Finding these dispersion-optimal coding schemes naturally gives a criteria for producing orthogonal design-like inputs in dimensions where orthogonal designs do not exist. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High peak values of transmission signals in wireless communication systems lead to wasteful energy consumption and degradation of several transmission performances. We continue the theoretical contributions made by Boche and Farell toward the understanding of peak value reduction, using the strategy known as tone reservation for orthogonal transmission schemes. There it was shown that for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, the combinatorial object called arithmetic progression plays an important role in setting limitations for the applicability of the tone reservation method. In this paper, we show that the combinatorial object introduced as perfect Walsh sum (PWS) plays a similar role for code-division multiple access (CDMA) systems as arithmetic progression for OFDM systems. By specific construction, we show that for a chosen numbers $m$ and $n$ , all subsets $\mathcal {I} $ of the set $[N]$ of the first $N=2^{n}$ natural numbers, which has the density in $[N]$ larger than a given $\delta \in (0,1)$ , i.e., $\left |{ \mathcal {I} }\right |/N\geq \delta $ , and which is sufficiently large enough, in the sense that $\left |{ I }\right |\geq 2(2/\delta)^{2^{m}-1}$ , contains a PWS of size $2^{m}$. By means of this result, and motivated by the previously mentioned connection between arithmetic progression and PWS, we show results for the PWS which are analogous to the famous Szemerédi theorem on arithmetic progressions, Conlon-Gower’s theorem on probabilistic construction of “sparse” sets containing an arithmetic progression, and even a solution of an analogon to the Erdős’ conjecture on arithmetic progressions. Those results give in particular an insight into the asymptotic limitations of tone reservation method for the CDMA systems. Besides, we show that a subset $I$ of $[N]$ is a PWS if and only if the embedding inequality of the subspace of $L^{1}([{0,1}])$ , containing linear combinations of Walsh functions indexed by elements of $\mathcal {I} $ , holds with the minimum possible embedding constant $\sqrt { \left |{ \mathcal {I} }\right |}$. The corresponding approach based in particular by the fact that the PWSs are the only Walsh sums having unit $L^{1}$ -norm, proven in this paper. By means of that results, we show that the minimum possible threshold constant for which the tone reservation method is applicable yields $\sqrt { \left |{ \mathcal {I} }\right |}$ if and only if the information set $\mathcal {I} $ is a PWS. We investigate a pilot allocation problem in wireless networks over Markovian fading channels. In wireless systems, the channel state information (CSI) is collected at the base station, in particular, this paper considers a pilot-aided channel estimation method (TDD mode). Typically, there are less available pilots than users, hence at each slot the scheduler needs to decide an allocation of pilots to users with the goal of maximizing the long-term average throughput. There is an inherent tradeoff in how the limited pilots are used: assign a pilot to a user with up-to-date CSI and good channel condition for exploitation, or assign a pilot to a user with outdated CSI for exploration. As we show, the arising pilot allocation problem is a restless bandit problem and thus its optimal solution is out of reach. In this paper, we propose an approximation based on the Lagrangian relaxation method, which provides a low-complexity Whittle index policy. We prove this policy to be asymptotically optimal in the many users regime (when the number of users in the system and the available pilots for channel sensing grow large). We evaluate the performance of Whittle’s index policy in various scenarios and illustrate its remarkably good performance for small number of users, where it is not guaranteed to be optimal. The problem of sending a secret message over the Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wiretap channel is studied. While the capacity of this channel is known, it is not clear how to construct optimal coding schemes that achieve this capacity. In this paper, we use linear operations along with successive interference cancellation to attain effective parallel single-antenna wiretap channels. By using independent scalar Gaussian wiretap codebooks over the resulting parallel channels, the capacity of the MIMO wiretap channel is achieved. The derivation of the schemes is based upon joint triangularization of the channel matrices. We find that the same technique can be used to rederive capacity expressions for the MIMO wiretap channel in a way that is simple and closely connected to a transmission scheme. This technique allows to extend the previously proven strong security for scalar Gaussian channels to the MIMO case. We further consider the problem of transmitting confidential messages over a two-user broadcast MIMO channel. For that problem, we find that derivation of both the capacity and a transmission scheme is a direct corollary of the proposed analysis for the MIMO wiretap channel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper characterizes the performance in terms of queueing stability of a network composed of multiple MIMO transmitter-receiver pairs taking into account the dynamic traffic pattern and the probing/feedback cost. We adopt a centralized scheduling scheme that selects a number of active pairs in each time-slot. We consider that the transmitters apply interference alignment (IA) technique if two or more pairs are active, whereas in the special case where one pair is active point-to-point MIMO singular value decomposition (SVD) is used. We consider a time-division duplex (TDD) system where transmitters acquire their channel state information (CSI) by decoding the pilot sequences sent by the receivers. Since global CSI knowledge is required for IA, the transmitters have also to exchange their estimated CSIs over a backhaul of limited capacity (i.e. imperfect case). Under this setting, we characterize in this paper the stability region of the system under both the imperfect and perfect (i.e. unlimited backhaul) cases, then we examine the gap between these two resulting regions. Further, under each case we provide a centralized probing policy that achieves the max stability region. These stability regions and scheduling policies are given for the symmetric system, where all the path loss coefficients are equal to each other, as well as for the general system. For the symmetric system, we provide the conditions under which IA yields a queueing stability gain compared to SVD. Under the general system, the adopted scheduling policy is of a high computational complexity for moderate numbers of pairs, consequently we propose an approximate policy that has a reduced complexity but that achieves only a fraction of the system stability region. The performance of existing coded caching schemes is sensitive to the worst channel quality, a problem which is exacerbated when communicating over fading channels. In this paper, we address this limitation in the following manner: in short-term, we allow transmissions to subsets of users with good channel quality, avoiding users with fades, while in long-term we ensure fairness among users. Our online scheme combines (i) the classical decentralized coded caching scheme with (ii) joint scheduling and power control for the fading broadcast channel, as well as (iii) congestion control for ensuring the optimal long-term average performance. We prove that our online delivery scheme maximizes the alpha-fair utility among all schemes restricted to decentralized placement. By tuning the value of alpha, the proposed scheme can achieve different operating points on the average delivery rate region and tune performance according to an operator’s choice. We demonstrate via simulations that our scheme outperforms two baseline schemes: (a) standard coded caching with multicast transmission, limited by the worst channel user yet exploiting the global caching gain; (b) opportunistic scheduling with unicast transmissions exploiting the fading diversity but limited to local caching gain. This paper investigates basic trade-offs between energy and delay in wireless communication systems using finite blocklength theory. We first assume that data arrive in constant stream of bits, which are put into packets and transmitted over a communications link. Our results show that depending on exactly how energy is measured, in general energy depends on $\sqrt {d^{-1}}$ or $\sqrt {d^{-1}\log {d}}$ , where $d$ is the delay. This means that the energy decreases quite slowly with increasing delay. Furthermore, to approach the absolute minimum of −1.59 dB on energy, bandwidth has to increase very rapidly, much more than what is predicted by infinite blocklength theory. We then consider the scenario when data arrive stochastically in packets and can be queued. We devise a scheduling algorithm based on finite blocklength theory and develop bounds for the energy-delay performance. In this paper, we study the arbitrarily varying broadcast channel (AVBC) when the state information is available at the transmitter in a causal manner. We establish the inner and outer bounds on both the random code capacity region and the deterministic code capacity region with degraded message sets. The capacity region is then determined for a class of channels satisfying a condition on the mutual information between the strategy variables and the channel outputs. As an example, we consider the arbitrarily varying binary symmetric broadcast channel. We show the cases where the condition holds and, hence, the capacity region is determined and other cases where there is a gap between the bounds. To address the exponentially rising demand for wireless content, the use of caching is emerging as a potential solution. It has been recently established that joint design of content delivery and storage (coded caching) can significantly improve performance over conventional caching. Coded caching is well suited to emerging heterogeneous wireless architectures which consist of a dense deployment of local-coverage wireless access points (APs) with high data rates, along with sparsely-distributed, large-coverage macro-cell base stations (BS). This enables design of coded caching-and-delivery schemes that equip APs with storage, and place content in them in a way that creates coded-multicast opportunities for combining with macro-cell broadcast to satisfy users even with different demands. Such coded-caching schemes have been shown to be order-optimal with respect to the BS transmission rate, for a system with single-level content, i.e., one where all content is uniformly popular. In this paper, we consider a system with non-uniform popularity content which is divided into multiple levels, based on varying degrees of popularity. The main contribution of this paper is the derivation of an order-optimal scheme which judiciously shares cache memory among files with different popularities. To show order-optimality we derive new information-theoretic lower bounds, which use a sliding-window entropy inequality, effectively creating a non-cut-set bound. We also extend the ideas to when users can access multiple caches along with the broadcast. Finally, we consider two extreme cases of user distribution across caches for the multi-level popularity model: a single user per cache (single-user setup) versus a large number of users per cache (multi-user setup), and demonstrate a dichotomy in the order-optimal strategies for these two extreme cases. Building on the recent coded-caching breakthrough by Maddah-Ali and Niesen, the work here considers the $K$ -user cache-aided wireless multi-antenna symmetric broadcast channel with random fading and imperfect feedback, and analyzes the throughput performance as a function of feedback statistics and cache size. In this setting, this paper identifies the optimal cache-aided degrees-of-freedom (DoF) within a factor of 4, by identifying near-optimal schemes that exploit a new synergy between coded caching and delayed CSIT, as well as by exploiting the unexplored interplay between caching and feedback-quality. The DoF expressions reveal an initial gain due to current CSIT, and an additional gain due to coded caching, which is exponential in the sense that any linear decrease in the required DoF performance, allows for an exponential reduction in the required cache size. In the end, this paper reveals three new aspects of caching: a synergy between memory and delayed feedback, a tradeoff between memory and current CSIT, and a powerful ability to provide cache-aided feedback savings. In this paper, we design energy-efficient space constellations for multiuser multi-input single-output visible light communication broadcast systems with channel state information (CSI) at the receiver in the three scenarios: 1) with CSI at the transmitter (CSIT); 2) with statistical CSIT; and 3) without CSIT. By utilizing the cooperation of multiuser interference, optimal multidimensional additively uniquely decomposable constellation groups are designed to optimize the received worst case performance metrics of all users subject to two commonly used power constraints, i.e., average and peak optical power constraints. The resulting optimal designs are proved to be pulse amplitude modulated with an optimal beamformer, which can be efficiently attained by numerical search for Scenarios 1 and 2 and be given in a closed form for Scenario 3. One of the common significant advantages of these designs is the fast demodulation of the sum signal from a noisy received signal, since these optimal designs result in an equivalent ideal scalar AWGN channel. In this paper, we propose a new coding scheme and establish new bounds on the capacity region for the multi-sender unicast index-coding problem. We revisit existing partitioned distributed composite coding (DCC) proposed by Sadeghi et al. and identify its limitations in the implementation of multi-sender composite coding and in the strategy of sender partitioning. We then propose two new coding components to overcome these limitations and develop a multi-sender cooperative composite coding (CCC). We show that CCC can strictly improve upon partitioned DCC, and is the key to achieve optimality for a number of index-coding instances. The usefulness of CCC and its special cases is illuminated via non-trivial examples, and the capacity region is established for each example. Compute-and-forward (CF) harnesses interference in wireless communications by exploiting structured coding. The key idea of CF is to compute integer combinations of code words from multiple source nodes, rather than to decode individual code words by treating others as noise. Compute-compress-and-forward (CCF) can further enhance the network performance by introducing compression operations at receivers. In this paper, we develop a more general compression framework, termed generalized CCF (GCCF), where the compression function involves the selection of message segments over finite fields. We show that GCCF achieves a broader compression rate region than CCF. We also compare our compression rate region with the fundamental Slepian–Wolf (SW) region. We show that GCCF is optimal in the sense of achieving the minimum total compression rate. We also establish the criteria under which GCCF achieves the SW region. In addition, we consider a two-hop relay network employing the GCCF scheme. We formulate a sum-rate maximization problem and develop an approximate algorithm to solve the problem. We investigate the maximum coding rate for a given average blocklength and error probability over a $K$ -user discrete memoryless broadcast channel for the scenario where a common message is transmitted using variable-length stop-feedback codes. For the point-to-point case, Polyanskiyet al.(2011) demonstrated that variable-length coding combined with stop-feedback significantly increases the speed of convergence of the maximum coding rate to capacity. This speed-up manifests itself in the absence of a square-root penalty in the asymptotic expansion of the maximum coding rate for large blocklengths, i.e.,zero dispersion. In this paper, we present nonasymptotic achievability and converse bounds on the maximum coding rate of the common-message $K$ -user discrete memoryless broadcast channel, which strengthen and generalize the ones reported in Trillingsgaardet al.(2015) for the two-user case. An asymptotic analysis of these bounds reveals that zero dispersion cannot be achieved for certain common-message broadcast channels (e.g., the binary symmetric broadcast channel). Furthermore, we identify conditions under which our converse and achievability bounds are tight up to the second order. Through numerical evaluations, we illustrate that our second-order expansions approximate accurately the maximum coding rate and that the speed of convergence to capacity is indeed slower than for the point-to-point case. This paper obtains the first degrees of freedom (DoFs) bound that is provably sensitive tonetworkcoherence time, i.e., coherence time in an interference network, where all channels experience the same coherence patterns. This is accomplished by a novel adaptation of the aligned image sets bound and settles various open problems noted previously by Naderi and Avestimehr and by Gouet al.For example, a necessary and sufficient condition is obtained for the optimality of 1/2 DoF per user in a partially connected interference network, where the channel state information at the receivers (CSIRs) is perfect, the channel state information at the transmitters (CSITs) is instantaneous but limited to finite precision, and the network coherence time is $T_{c}=1$. This paper asks how much we can gain in terms of bandwidth and user satisfaction, if recommendation systems became bandwidth aware and took into account not only the user preferences, but also the fact that they may need to serve these users under bandwidth constraints, as is the case over wireless networks. We formulate this as a new problem in the context of index coding: we relax the index coding requirements to capture scenarios where each client has preferences associated with messages. The client is satisfied to receive any message she does not already have, with a satisfaction proportional to her preference for that message. We consistently find, over a number of scenarios we sample, that although the optimization problems are in general NP-hard, significant bandwidth savings are possible even when restricted to polynomial time algorithms. The centralized coded caching scheme is a technique proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen as a method to reduce the network burden in peak times in a wireless network system. Yan et al. reformulate the problem as designing a corresponding placement delivery array and propose two new schemes from this perspective. These schemes significantly reduce the rate compared with the uncoded caching schemes. However, to implement these schemes, each file should be cut into $F$ pieces, where $F$ grows exponentially with the number of users $K$. Such a constraint is obviously infeasible in the practical setting, especially when $K$ is large. Thus, it is desirable to design caching schemes with constant rate $R$ (independent of $K$ ) as well as smaller $F$. In this paper, we view the centralized coded caching problem in a hypergraph perspective and show that designing a feasible placement delivery array is equivalent to constructing a linear and (6,3)-free 3-uniform 3-partite hypergraph. Several new results and constructions arise from our novel point of view. First, by using the famous (6,3)-theorem in extremal graph theory, we show that constant rate placement delivery arrays with $F$ growing linearly with $K$ do not exist. We present a framework for random access that is based on three elements: physical-layer network coding (PLNC), signature codes, and tree splitting. In presence of a collision, physical-layer network coding enables the receiver to decode, i.e., compute, the sum of the packets that were transmitted by the individual users. For each user, the packet consists of the user’s signature, as well as the data that the user wants to communicate. As long as no more than $K$ users collide, their identities can be recovered from the sum of their signatures. This framework for creating and transmitting packets can be used as a fundamental building block in random access algorithms, since it helps to deal efficiently with the uncertainty of the set of contending terminals. In this paper, we show how to apply the framework in conjunction with a tree-splitting algorithm, which is required to deal with the case that more than $K$ users collide. We demonstrate that our approach achieves throughput that tends to 1 rapidly as $K$ increases. We also present results on net data-rate of the system, showing the impact of the overheads of the constituent elements of the proposed protocol. We compare the performance of our scheme with an upper bound that is obtained under the assumption that the active users are a priori known. Also, we consider an upper bound on the net data-rate for any PLNC-based strategy in which one linear equation per slot is decoded. We show that already at modest packet lengths, the net data-rate of our scheme becomes close to the second upper bound, i.e., the overhead of the contention resolution algorithm and the signature codes vanishes. In this paper, the $\eta $ -Nash equilibrium ( $\eta $ -NE) region of the two-user Gaussian interference channel (IC) with perfect output feedback is approximated to within 1 bit/s/Hz and $\eta $ arbitrarily close to 1 bit/s/Hz. The relevance of the $\eta $ -NE region is that it provides the set of rate pairs that are achievable and stable in the IC when both transmitter–receiver pairs autonomously tune their own transmit–receive configurations seeking an $\eta $ -optimal individual transmission rate. Therefore, any rate tuple outside the $\eta $ -NE region is not stable as there always exists one link able to increase by at least $\eta $ bits/s/Hz its own transmission rate by updating its own transmit–receive configuration. The main insights that arise from this paper are as follows. First, the $\eta $ -NE region achieved with feedback is larger than or equal to the $\eta $ -NE region without feedback. More importantly, for each rate pair achievable at an $\eta $ -NE without feedback, there exists at least one rate pair achievable at an $\eta $ -NE with feedback that is weakly Pareto superior. Second, there always exists an $\eta $ -NE transmit–receive configuration that achieves a rate pair that is at most 1 bit/s/Hz per user away from the outer bound of the capacity region. In this paper, the problem of feedback and active user selection in multiple-input single-output (MISO) wireless systems such that the system’s stability region is as big as possible is examined. The focus is on a system in a Rayleigh fading environment where zero forcing precoding is used to serve all active users in every slot. Acquisition of the channel states is done via uplink training in time division duplexing mode by the active users. Clearly, only a subset of users can perform uplink training and the selection of this subset is a challenging and interesting problem especially in MISO systems. The stability regions of a baseline centralized scheme and two novel decentralized policies are examined analytically. In the decentralized schemes, the transmitter broadcasts periodically the queue state information and the users contend for the channel in a carrier sense multiple access-based manner with parameters based on the outdated queue state information and real-time channel state information. We show that, using infrequent signaling between the base station and the users, the decentralized policies outperform the centralized policy. In addition, a threshold-based user selection and training scheme for discrete-time contention is proposed. The results of this paper imply that, as far as stability is concerned, the users must be involved in the active user selection and feedback/training decision. In this paper, we study a simple question: when are dynamic relaying strategies essential in optimizing the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) in half-duplex wireless relay networks? This is motivated by apparently two contrasting results even for a simple three-node network with a single half-duplex relay. When all channels in the system are assumed to be independent and identically fading, a static schedule where the relay listens half the time and transmits half the time combined with quantize-map-and-forward (QMF) relaying is known to achieve the full-duplex performance. However, when there is no direct link between the source and the destination, a dynamic decode-and-forward (DDF) strategy is needed to achieve the optimal tradeoff. In this case, a static schedule is strictly suboptimal and the optimal tradeoff is significantly worse than the full-duplex performance. In this paper, we study the general case when the direct link is neither as strong as the other links nor fully nonexistent, and identify regimes where dynamic schedules are necessary and those where static schedules are enough. We identify four qualitatively different regimes for the single-relay channel, where the tradeoff between diversity and multiplexing is significantly different. We show that in all these regimes one of the above two strategies is sufficient to achieve the optimal tradeoff by developing a new upper bound on the best achievable tradeoff under channel state information available only at the receivers. A natural next question is whether these two strategies are sufficient to achieve the DMT of more general half-duplex wireless networks with a larger number of relays. We propose a generalization of the two existing schemes through a dynamic QMF (DQMF) strategy, where the relay listens for a fraction of time depending on received channel state information but not long enough to be able to decode. This paper provides a unified framework to study the performance of successive interference cancellation (SIC) in wireless networks with arbitrary fading distribution and power-law path loss. An analytical characterization of the performance of SIC is given as a function of different system parameters. The results suggest that the marginal benefit of enabling the receiver to successively decode \(k\) users diminishes very fast with \(k\) , especially in networks of high dimensions and small path loss exponent. On the other hand, SIC is highly beneficial when the users are clustered around the receiver and/or very low-rate codes are used. In addition, with multiple packet reception, a lower per-user information rate always results in higher aggregate throughput in interference-limited networks. In contrast, there exists a positive optimal per-user rate that maximizes the aggregate throughput in noisy networks. The analytical results serve as useful tools to understand the potential gain of SIC in heterogeneous cellular networks (HCNs). Using these tools, this paper quantifies the gain of SIC on the coverage probability in HCNs with nonaccessible base stations. We investigate the benefits of incorporating relays in future multi-user wireless networks that seek to exploit unexplored bands of very high frequency spectrum, where transmitted signals are known to be highly susceptible to outages. To this end, we examine a two-user bursty MIMO Gaussian interference channel with an in-band relay, where Bernoulli random states conceptually capture signal outages. As our main result, we show that an in-band relay can provide a degrees of freedom (DoF) gain in this bursty channel. This beneficial role of in-band relays in the bursty channel is in direct contrast to their role in the non-bursty channel which is not as significant to provide a DoF gain. More importantly, we demonstrate that in certain antenna configurations, an in-band relay can help achieve interference-free performances with increased DoF. We find the benefits particularly substantial in high-outage circumstances, as the DoF gain can grow linearly with the number of antennas at the relay. In this paper, first we derive an outer bound from which we obtain a necessary condition for interference-free DoF performances. The main result of this paper is that an orthogonal access scheme, such as time division multiple access achieves the all-unicast degrees of freedom (DoF) region of the topological interference management problem if and only if the network topology graph is chordal bipartite, i.e., every cycle that can contain a chord, does contain a chord. The all-unicast DoF region includes the DoF region for any arbitrary choice of a unicast message set, so e.g., the results of Maleki and Jafar on the optimality of orthogonal access for the sum-DoF of one-dimensional convex networks are recovered as a special case. This paper investigates the achievable rates of an additive white Gaussian noise energy-harvesting (EH) channel with an infinite battery. The EH process is characterized by a sequence of blocks of harvested energy, which is known causally at the source. The harvested energy remains constant within a block while the harvested energy across different blocks is characterized by a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables. The blocks have length $L$ , which can be interpreted as the coherence time of the energy-arrival process. If L$ is a constant or grows sublinearly in the blocklength n$ , we fully characterize the first-order term in the asymptotic expansion of the maximum transmission rate subject to a fixed tolerable error probability \varepsilon $ . The first-order term is known as the \varepsilon for any $\varepsilon $ less than 1/2. The lower bound is obtained through analyzing the save-and-transmit strategy. If $L$ grows linearly in $n$ , we obtain lower and upper bounds on the $\varepsilon $ -capacity, which coincide whenever the cumulative distribution function of the EH random variable is continuous and strictly increasing. BATS codes were proposed for communication through networks with packet loss. A BATS code consists of an outer code and an inner code. The outer code is a matrix generation of a fountain code, which works with the inner code that comprises random linear coding at the intermediate network nodes. In this paper, the performance of finite-length BATS codes is analyzed with respect to both belief propagation (BP) decoding and inactivation decoding. Our results enable us to evaluate efficiently the finite-length performance in terms of the number of batches used for decoding ranging from 1 to a given maximum number, and provide new insights on the decoding performance. Specifically, for a fixed number of input symbols and a range of the number of batches used for decoding, we obtain recursive formulae to calculate the stopping time distribution of BP decoding and the inactivation probability in inactivation decoding. We also find that both the failure probability of BP decoding and the expected number of inactivations in inactivation decoding can be expressed in a power-sum form where the number of batches appears only as the exponent. This power-sum expression reveals clearly how the decoding failure probability and the expected number of inactivation decrease with the number of batches. When the number of batches used for decoding follows a Poisson distribution, we further derive recursive formulas with potentially lower computational complexity for both decoding algorithms. For the BP decoder that consumes batches one by one, three formulae are provided to characterize the expected number of consumed batches until all the input symbols are decoded. Caching plays an important role in reducing the backbone traffic when serving high-volume multimedia content. Recently, a new class of coded caching schemes have received significant interest, because they can exploit coded multi-cast opportunities to further reduce backbone traffic. Without considering file popularity, prior works have characterized the fundamental performance limits of coded caching through a deterministic worst-case analysis. However, when heterogeneous file popularity is considered, there remain open questions regarding the fundamental limits of coded caching performance. In this paper, for an arbitrary popularity distribution, we first derive a new information-theoretic lower bound on the expected transmission rate of any coded caching schemes. We then show that a simple coded-caching scheme attains an expected transmission rate that is at most a constant factor away from the lower bound. Motivated by the recent emergence of energy harvesting and wirelessly powered transceivers, we study communication over a memoryless channel with a transmitter, whose battery is recharged at random or deterministic times known to the receiver. We characterize the capacity of this channel as the limit of an $n$ -letter maximum mutual information rate under various assumptions: causal and noncausal transmitter knowledge of the battery recharges, with or without feedback from the receiver to the transmitter. While the resultant $n$ -letter capacity expressions are not computable in the general case, we demonstrate their usefulness by focusing on two important special cases, namely, the binary erasure channel (BEC) and the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, where they lead to some interesting, and somewhat surprising, insights. By focusing on the BEC, we show that output feedback can strictly increase the capacity of this channel, even though the channel is memoryless and the battery recharging process is independent over time. Interestingly, this provides a counter example to an old claim by Shannon stated without proof in his 1956 paper. On the other hand, by focusing on the AWGN channel, we are able to show that the capacity with noncausal knowledge of the battery recharging times at the transmitter is strictly larger than that with causal knowledge, even though the battery recharging process is independent over time and known to the receiver. The $n$ -letter expressions can also be used to derive explicit upper and lower bounds on capacity. In particular, we derive simple upper and lower bounds on the capacity of the AWGN channel with random battery recharges, which are within 1.05 b/s/Hz of each other for all parameter values. The capacity region of the $K$ -user Gaussian interference channel (GIC) is a long-standing open problem and even capacity outer bounds are little known in general. A significant progress on degrees-of-freedom (DoF) analysis, a first-order capacity approximation, for the $K$ -user GIC has provided new important insights into the problem of interest in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) limit. However, such capacity approximation has been observed to have some limitations in predicting the capacity at finite SNR. In this paper, we develop a new upper-bounding technique that utilizes a new type of genie signal and applies time sharing to genie signals at $K$ receivers. Based on this technique, we derive new upper bounds on the sum capacity of the three-user GIC with constant, complex channel coefficients and then generalize to the $K$ -user case to better understand sum-rate behavior at finite SNR. We also provide closed-form expressions of our upper bounds on the capacity of the $K$ -user symmetric GIC easily computable for any $K$ . From the perspectives of our results, some sum-rate behavior at finite SNR is in line with the insights given by the known DoF results, while some others are not. In particular, the well-known $K/2$ DoF achievable for almost all constant real channel coefficients turns out to be not embodied as a substantial performance gain over a certain range of the cross-channel coefficient in the $K$ -user symmetric real case especially for large $K$ . We further investigate the impact of phase offset between the direct-channel coefficient and the cross-channel coefficients on the sum-rate upper bound for the three-user complex GIC. Caching is a promising solution to satisfy the ever-increasing demands for the multi-media traffics. In caching networks, coded caching is a recently proposed technique that achieves significant performance gains over the uncoded caching schemes. However, to implement the coded caching schemes, each file has to be split into F packets, which usually increases exponentially with the number of users K . Thus, designing caching schemes that decrease the order of F is meaningful for practical implementations. In this paper, by reviewing the Ali-Niesen caching scheme, the placement delivery array (PDA) design problem is first formulated to characterize the placement issue and the delivery issue with a single array. Moreover, we show that, through designing appropriate PDA, new centralized coded caching schemes can be discovered. Second, it is shown that the Ali-Niesen scheme corresponds to a special class of PDA, which realizes the best coding gain with the least F . Third, we present a new construction of PDA for the centralized coded caching system, wherein the cache size M at each user (identical cache size is assumed at all users) and the number of files N ( q is an integer, such that q\geq 2 ). The new construction can decrease the required F of Ali-Niesen scheme to O(e^{K\cdot ({M}/{N})\ln \!\,({N}/\!{M})}) or O(e^{K\cdot (1-({M}/\!{N}))\ln \!\,(N/(N-M))})$ , respectively, while the coding gain loss is only 1. In this paper, the fundamental limits of simultaneous information and energy transmission in the two-user Gaussian multiple access channel with feedback (G-MAC-F) and without feedback (G-MAC) are fully characterized. More specifically, all the achievable information and energy transmission rates (in bits per channel use and energy-units per channel use, respectively) are identified. Furthermore, the fundamental limits on the individual and sum- rates given a minimum-energy rate ensured at an energy harvester are also characterized. In the case without feedback, an achievability scheme based on power-splitting and successive interference cancellation is shown to be optimal. Alternatively, in the G-MAC-F case, a simple yet optimal achievability scheme based on power-splitting and Ozarow’s capacity achieving scheme is presented. Finally, the energy transmission enhancement induced by the use of feedback is quantified. Feedback can at most double the energy transmission rate at high SNRs when the information transmission sum-rate is kept fixed at the sum-capacity of the G-MAC, but it has no effect at very low SNRs. Impulsive noise features in many modern communication systems—ranging from wireless to molecular—and is often modeled by the $\alpha $ -stable distribution. At present, the capacity of $\alpha $ -stable noise channels is not well understood, with the exception of Cauchy noise ( $\alpha = 1$ ) with a logarithmic constraint and Gaussian noise ( $\alpha = 2$ ) with a power constraint. In this paper, we consider additive symmetric $\alpha $ -stable noise channels with $\alpha \in (1,2]$ . We derive bounds for the capacity with an absolute moment constraint. We then compare our bounds with a numerical approximation via the Blahut–Arimoto algorithm, which provides insight into the effect of noise parameters on the bounds. Jamming attacks can significantly impact the performance of wireless communication systems. In addition to reducing the capacity, such attacks may lead to insurmountable overhead in terms of retransmissions and increased power consumption. In this paper, we consider the multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channel (BC) in the presence of a jamming attack in which a subset of the receivers can be jammed at any given time. Further, countermeasures for mitigating the effects of such jamming attacks are presented. The effectiveness of these antijamming countermeasures is quantified in terms of the degrees-of-freedom (DoF) of the MISO BC under various assumptions regarding the availability of the channel state information (CSIT) and the jammer state information at the transmitter (JSIT). The main contribution of this paper is the characterization of the DoF region of the two user MISO BC under various assumptions on the availability of CSIT and JSIT. This paper focuses on the problem of broadcasting information in the most efficient manner in a large 2-D ad hoc wireless network at low SNR and under line-of-sight propagation. A new communication scheme is proposed, where source nodes first broadcast their data to the entire network, despite the lack of sufficient available power. The signal’s power is then reinforced via successive back-and-forth beamforming transmissions between different groups of nodes in the network, so that all nodes are able to decode the transmitted information at the end. This scheme is shown to achieve asymptotically the broadcast capacity of the network, which is expressed in terms of the largest singular value of the matrix of fading coefficients between the nodes in the network. In this paper, we study the secrecy capacity of Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wiretap channels (WTCs) with a finite memory, subject to a per-symbol average power constraint on the MIMO channel input. MIMO channels with finite memory are very common in wireless communications as well as in wireline communications (e.g., in communications over power lines). To derive the secrecy capacity of the Gaussian MIMO WTC with finite memory, we first construct an asymptotically equivalent block-memoryless MIMO WTC, which is then transformed into a set of parallel, independent, memoryless MIMO WTCs in the frequency domain. The secrecy capacity of the Gaussian MIMO WTC with finite memory is obtained as the secrecy capacity of the set of parallel, independent, memoryless MIMO WTCs, and is expressed as maximization over the input covariance matrices in the frequency domain. Finally, we detail two applications of our result: First, we show that the secrecy capacity of the Gaussian scalar WTC with finite memory can be achieved by waterfilling, and obtain a closed-form expression for this secrecy capacity. Multicast tree is a key structure for data dissemination from one source to multiple receivers in wireless networks. Minimum length multica modeled as the Steiner tree problem, and is proven to be NP-hard. In this paper, we explore how to efficiently generate minimum length multi wireless sensor networks (WSNs), where only limited knowledge of network topology is available at each node. We design and analyze a simple algorithm, which we call toward source tree (TST), to build multicast trees in WSNs. We show three metrics of TST algorithm, i.e., running and energy efficiency. We prove that its running time is O(\sqrt n\log n) , the best among all existing solutions to our best knowledge. We prove that TST tree length is in the same order as Steiner tree, which give a theoretical upper bound and use simulations to show the ratio be only 1.114 when nodes are uniformly distributed. We evaluate energy efficiency in terms of message complexity and the number of forwarding prove that they are both order-optimal. Correlation across transmit antennas in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems has been studied in various scenarios and has been shown to be detrimental or provide benefits depending on the particular system and underlying assumptions. In this paper, we investigate the effect of transmit correlation on the capacity of the Gaussian MIMO broadcast channel, with a particular interest in the large-scale array (or massive MIMO) regime. To this end, we introduce a new type of diversity, referred to as transmit correlation diversity, which captures the fact that the channel vectors of different users may have different channel covariance matrices spanning often nearly mutually orthogonal subspaces. In particular, when taking the cost of downlink training properly into account, transmit correlation diversity can yield significant capacity gains in all regimes of interest. Our analysis shows that the system multiplexing gain can be increased by a factor up to \lfloor M/r\rfloor , where $M$ is the number of antennas and $r\le M$ is the common rank of the users channel covariance matrices, with respect to standard schemes that are agnostic of the transmit correlation diversity and treat the channels as if they were isotropically distributed. This paper studies the capacity region when three nodes \ \mathsf 1, \mathsf 2, \mathsf 3\ communicate with each other by sending packets through unreliable wireless medium. For each time slot, with some probabilities a packet sent by node $i$ may be received by both of the other nodes $j$ and $k$ ; received only by node $j$ (or node $k$ ); or received by neither node. Interference is avoided by enforcing that at most one node can transmit in each time slot. We assume that node $i$ can always reach node $j$ , possibly with the help of the third node $k$ , for any $i \neq j$ pairs (thus the term fully connected). In this paper, we propose a novel “genie chains” approach to obtain information theoretic degrees of freedom (DoF) outer bounds for MIMO wireless interference networks. This new approach creates a chain of mappings from genie signals provided to a receiver to the exposed signal spaces at that receiver, and then the exposed signal spaces serve as the genie signals for the next receiver in the chain subject to certain linear independence requirements. Our approach essentially converts an information theoretic DoF outer bound problem into a linear algebra problem. Several applications of the genie chains approach are presented. In this paper, we analyze the problem of power control in large, random wireless networks that are obtained by “erasing” a finite fraction of nodes from a regular $d$ -dimensional lattice of $N$ transmit-receive pairs. In this model, which has the important feature of a minimum distance between transmitter nodes, we find that when the network is infinite, power control is always feasible below a positive critical value of the users’ signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) target. Drawing on tools and ideas from statistical physics, we show how this problem can be mapped to the Anderson impurity model for diffusion in random media. In this way, by employing the so-called coherent potential approximation method, we calculate the average power in the system (and its variance) for 1-D and 2-D networks. This approach is equivalent to traditional techniques from random matrix theory and is in excellent agreement with the numerical simulations; however, it fails to predict when power control becomes infeasible. In this regard, even though infinitely large systems are always unstable beyond a critical value of the users’ SINR target, finite systems remain stable with high probability even beyond this critical SINR threshold. We calculate this probability by analyzing the density of low lying eigenvalues of an associated random Schrödinger operator, and we show that the network can exceed this critical SINR threshold by at least $ \mathop {{\mathcal O}}\nolimits ((\log N)^{-2/d})$ before undergoing a phase transition to the unstable regime. Finally, using the same techniques, we also calculate the tails of the distribution of transmit power in the system and the rate of convergence of the Foschini–Miljanic power control algorithm in the presence of random erasures.
