3. Influence of Slot and Pole Number Combinations on Cogging Torque in PM Machines With Interaction of Tooth Bulge and Rotor Eccentricity

Abstract

With the aid of vector analysis and finite element method, this paper investigates the influence of slot and pole number combinations on cogging torque in permanent magnet (PM) machines with interactive effects between tooth bulge and rotor eccentricity, accounting for various slot/pole number combinations (Ns/2p), e.g., 2p = Ns ± m where m is an integer (including 2p = Ns ± 1 and 2p = Ns ± 2), Ns/2p = 12/8, and Ns/2p = 12/4. It is firstly found that m greatly influences the interaction of two tolerances on cogging torque. The degree of interaction is reduced with m, and it is larger in “−m” than in “+ m” machines. Secondly, for the machines having 2p = Ns − m, there is a weakening interaction of cogging torque when the static eccentric rotor is close to outward bulged teeth, whilst there is a strengthening interaction of cogging torque when the static eccentric rotor is close to inward bulged teeth, but vice versa for 2p = Ns + m machines. However, in both 2p = Ns ± m machines, cogging torques due to dynamic eccentricity and tooth bulge always have a strengthening interaction. The measured cogging torques of the prototypes verify the predicted results.

4. Improved Pulsating Signal Injection Sensorless Control of Dual Three-Phase IPMSMs With Arbitrary Inductance Asymmetries in One Set Three-Phase Windings

Abstract

This paper investigates the influence of arbitrary self-inductance asymmetries in one set three-phase windings on high-frequency pulsating sinusoidal signal injection based sensorless control of dual three-phase interior permanent magnet synchronous machine and the adaptive notch filter is utilized to compensate arbitrary inductance asymmetries. It is found that the demodulated current responses in both two sets generate 2nd- and 4th-order positive and negative sequence error signals because of arbitrary self-inductance asymmetries in one set three-phase windings. These current error signals cause 2nd- and 4th-order estimated position errors in high frequency pulsating sinusoidal signal injection-based sensorless control method. The adaptive notch filter based compensation method can suppress both 2nd- and 4th-order estimated position errors. The compensation method for inductance asymmetries is validated by the measured results.

Abstract

For high-speed machines, in particular, it is very important to accurately predict natural frequencies of the rotor at the design stage so as to minimize the likelihood of failure. Finite-element analysis and experimental measurements are used to establish the natural frequencies and modes of the rotor of a high-speed permanent-magnet brushless motor, and to assess the influence of leading design parameters, such as the active length, the shaft diameter and extension, the bearings, and the material properties. Abstract

This article proposes a novel asymmetric interior permanent magnet (AIPM) rotor topology for torque enhancement and torque ripple reduction in IPM synchronous machines. The AIPM rotor structure is featured by a hybrid-layer permanent magnet configuration, i.e., for each pole, a part of PM configuration has one-layer while the other part has two layers. It allows the magnetic-field-shifting (MFS) effect to be utilized by reducing the current angle difference between maximum PM and reluctance torque components, thereby effectively increasing the maximum resultant torque. The proposed AIPM machine and a conventional V-shape IPM machine are designed and globally parametric optimized with the same 24-slot/4-pole stator, rotor diameter, and PM usage. The influence of key rotor geometric parameters of the AIPM machine on torque and open-circuit air-gap magnetic field characteristics are investigated. The comparison of electromagnetic performance confirms that significant torque enhancement and torque ripple reduction in the AIPM machine compared with the conventional V-shape IPM machine and reveals the MFS effect is essential for torque increase. Abstract

In this article, three 6-slot/2-pole high-speed permanent magnet motors with 1, 2, and 3 coil-pitch windings are optimized by the finite element method taking into account stator copper loss and iron loss. Their electromagnetic performances are analyzed and compared, including air-gap flux density, back electromagnetic force, electromagnetic torque, winding inductances, and various loss components. For high-speed application, compared with 1 and 3 coil-pitch windings, the proposed 2 coil-pitch windings have a good tradeoff between winding factor and end-winding axial length which are attractive for improved torque density.
