Nowadays, the three-level T-type inverters (3LT2Is) are widely employed in applications with high-performance requirements. The 3LT2Is commonly suffer from neutral point voltage (NPV) unbalance and common-mode voltage (CMV) variation. The medium vector pulse width modulation (MVPWM), which generates the reference voltage using medium and V0[OOO] zero voltage vectors, eliminates the CMV variation in 3LT2Is. However, it cannot keep the NPV balance, negatively affecting power quality. This article proposes a hybrid method to simultaneously eliminate CMV variation and guarantee the NPV balance without topological change or extra hardware. The proposed method uses MVPWM when NPV is balanced, eliminating CMV variation. If NPV goes unbalanced, it utilizes novel high/low triangle PWM (H/LPWM) and MVPWM in a hybrid manner to balance the NPV. The H/LPWM, similar to MVPWM, synthesizes voltage using medium and V0[OOO] voltage vectors to maintain the CMV elimination advantage during the NPV balancing process. However, the difference between H/LPWMs and MVPWM switching patterns adjusts the average neutral point current to balance the NPV. Noteworthy that the proposed method provides NPV balancing ability for the entire power factor range. As a result, it is usable for various applications of 3LT2I, such as photovoltaic inverters and motor drives. The proposed method is carrier-based, which reduces the execution time and simplifies the practical implementation. An overmodulation method is proposed for an in-wheel system where two motors are coupled to a sum gear. In the dual-motor dual-inverter single shaft systems, the output voltage magnitudes of two inverters are not the same in the overmodulation range due to the angle offset between two motors. In this article, to maintain torque balance in the overmodulation region, holding vectors are defined between adjacent vertices of two voltage hexagons. Around these vectors, the holding region is also defined by the holding angle. If a reference voltage vector is in the holding region, it is modulated to the holding vector; otherwise, it is modulated to the vector on the arc of inscribed circle. For a given the modulation index (MI), the holding angle is obtained based on the Fourier series expansion. The proposed method keeps the output voltages of two inverters the same even if two motors have the angle offset. Further, it has the characteristic of maintaining the linearity between the reference and output MI to the maximum MI. This article presents an analysis of conventional single-phase cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverters composed of two and three cells. The dc-link can be a dc source or a floating capacitor. Two methods are given to regulate the floating capacitor voltage. In this way, according to the capacitor voltage balancing method used, operating regions and power distribution on the floating capacitor are presented for different dc-link voltage ratios and several ranges of modulation index and load power factor. A mathematical analysis is done in order to demonstrate the influence of the modulation index and load power factor over the power distribution. The growing adoption of electric vehicles has recently attracted increasing attention of scientists and brought about pioneering research studies from various fields. Safety concerns particularly those regarding ground faults detection and protection, have extensively been addressed. Ground faults occur quite frequently in electric vehicles and they may be due to severe operation conditions, such as vibrations, twists or even crashes. Generally, the first ground fault is not dangerous, since the powertrain systems, namely, the dc bus where the batteries are connected, the power inverter and one or more ac machines, are generally ungrounded. The second ground fault, however, can produce malfunction in some systems, power loss or even serious damages. Locating the fault has often proved hard and time consuming. For this reason, the present study focuses on developing a ground-fault detection method for electric vehicles capable of determining on which side, the dc or the ac, the ground fault is located. The method is based on the analysis of the voltage in a grounding resistor connected between the midpoint of the battery pack and ground. Based on the polarity and harmonics, it is possible to locate the ground fault. This method has been verified excellent results have been achieved using computer simulations and experimental tests in a 140-kW electronic power inverter fed by a 480 Vdc battery. Transformerless inverters (TLIs) are competently accepted for photovoltaic (PV) applications because of their high efficiency, reduced size, and lower cost. But in the absence of a transformer, there exists a galvanic connection between the PV array to ground and it results in the flow of hazardous leakage current. Several TLI topologies have been proposed in the literature with decoupling circuits to reduce the leakage current. Among those H5, Heric, and H6 topologies are the most popular and widely accepted TLIs. Nevertheless, the effect of switch junction capacitances was not considered in the common-mode voltage analysis, which inevitably causes excess leakage current. Also, reactive power capability cannot be accomplished with traditional pulsewidth modulation (PWM) schemes due to the absence of a bidirectional current path during the freewheeling period. Therefore, in this article, a bidirectional clamping (BDC) based H5, Heric, and H6 TLI topologies are proposed with improved PWM schemes. BDC branch reduces the leakage current by clamping the inverter terminal voltages to half of the dc-link voltage during the freewheeling period and the improved PWM schemes ensure the bidirectional current path while operating in negative power region. Silicon-carbide (SiC) mosfets have shown superior characteristics to Si IGBTs, bringing in significant performance improvement such as enabling more compact, higher efficiency converters that are not feasible with conventional Si IGBTs. Currently, there is a lack of systematic and conclusive investigation into soft-switching inverters using SiC mosfets in comparison to Si IGBTs. This article, therefore, presents a comparative evaluation of a soft-switching inverter, i.e., the auxiliary resonant commutated pole inverter (ARCPI) using SiC mosfets or Si IGBTs. The switching transition, switching device current stress, neutral point ripple current, electromagnetic interference (EMI), efficiency, and cost are compared on identical ARCPI setups, i.e., with the same printed circuit boards and under identical driving conditions (gate drivers). Experimental results show that the ARCPI using SiC mosfets has better performance than that using Si IGBTs due to its faster switching speed. First, the ARCPI using SiC mosfets performs full zero-voltage switching and the switching transition behavior is more predictable. Unlike Si IGBTs, SiC mosfets have no turn-off tail current and forward voltage drop during switching transitions. Second, the ARCPI using SiC mosfets endures less current stress and smaller ripple current in dc-link capacitors. Third, the ARCPI using SiC mosfets exhibits better EMI performance and higher efficiency. Specifically, a maximum 20 dBμV harmonic reduction can be achieved around 800 kHz and a 3.1% improvement in efficiency can be achieved at 6 kW. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, a new postfault control algorithm for cascaded H-bridge (CHB) multilevel inverter is proposed to increase the maximum available output voltage under semiconductor fault conditions. Once a semiconductor switch in an H-bridge power cell fails, instead of bypassing the faulty cell, it can be utilized to generate a voltage. However, one of the three levels (positive, negative, or zero) of the faulty cell output voltage is not available, reducing the available output voltage of the cell to half. In the proposed method, the faulty cells being utilized and combined with the neutral shift (NS) method to achieve a higher output voltage of the CHB in faulty conditions. The output voltage obtained by the proposed method is analyzed for different faulty conditions and compared with the conventional NS method. Common-mode-voltage (CMV) is a well-known source of bearing currents and electromagnetic interference (EMI) in industrial applications. In industrial environments with impedance-earthed IT earthing system, such as underground mining, CMV is additionally associated with potentially undetectable fault currents, due to their diversion away from a protection circuit. This article proposes a variable speed drive (VSD) solution that generates practically zero CMV and removes alternative paths for the fault currents. The VSD topology utilized in this article is a standard two-level inverter with active front end. The article develops a control strategy such that it eliminates CMV, minimizes EMI, and optimizes harmonic distortion at the drive input and output. Bond-wire liftoff caused by mechanical stress due to thermal cycling is one of the major failures in power electronic systems. Condition monitoring concepts which allow prediction of these failures are often based on voltage-drop detection and thermal monitoring. However, solutions to determine the junction temperature and semiconductor voltage drop during operation often require additional effort and lead to increased cost. In this article, a direct semiconductor temperature detection method is proposed which is based on instantaneous semiconductor voltage-drop monitoring. A mosfet inverter system, equipped with a digital integration-based instantaneous output voltage measuring circuit, is extended by software to enable instantaneous semiconductor voltage-drop detection. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is feasible for online temperature measurement and detection of increased resistance due to bond-wire faults. Active damping is a popular approach to suppress the resonance in LCL-filtered grid-connected inverter owing to lossless damping and efficient system design. In capacitor voltage (CV) damping methods, a differential compensator is essentially needed in feedback path, where the damping effectiveness depends on emulated derivative characteristics of the compensator. Such CV feedback compensation methods face design limitation at the critical resonance frequency and may require additional delay reduction to ensure stability. In this article, an alternative parallel feedforward compensation method is proposed to synthesize an almost strictly positive real plant and achieved damping with modified stability characteristics. A second-order bandpass section is employed as a compensator in damping loop based on the proposed control scheme. The main features of the proposed method are effective damping without critical resonance frequency damping limit, extended stable damping region, improved control performance, and good robustness under filter parameters and grid inductance variation conditions. Flux-weakening (F-W) based on feedback voltage regulation is commonly adopted in interior permanent magnet synchronous motor drives. Voltage space vector magnitude is controlled in a closed loop, modifying the current reference, following a value related to the inverter limitations. A stable and fast voltage control allows to operate with lower voltage margin, leading to higher torque versus speed capability. Theoretical analysis and gain adaptation of the F-W regulation loop was reported by Bolognani et al. partially overcoming the difficulties due to the strong nonlinearity of the plant. An approximated closed-form design method was proposed and refined by Bedetti et al. This allowed the application of the algorithm to drives where autotuning is needed, ensuring stability and dynamical performances. A fundamental enhancement is introduced in this article, namely the use of a speed regulator with explicit torque reference output. An advantage of this technique is that the speed loop becomes linear in the whole operating range and an accurate control of machine torque is possible. Thanks to a novel gain adaptation for the voltage regulator, the F-W behavior is decoupled from the speed control response at speed steady-state (at constant or slowly changing torque), improving performance of the overall drive control. Adoption of this novel method allows smooth operation with invariant dynamical behavior of both the speed and F-W control loops. Extensive simulations and experimental tests are reported to prove the validity of the proposal. Electrical drive systems without dedicated speed transducer require precise information about the terminal phase voltage to achieve an acceptable low-speed performance. Recently, voltage-sensing techniques have gained in importance as they improve stability at low-speeds compared to the conventional estimation based on reference values. However, the additional sensors increase the sensitivity to sensor offset drift, which can cause self-sensing control algorithms to fail at very low speeds. In this article, a novel offset adaption method is introduced that compensates sensor offsets during operation while being fully decoupled from the control algorithm. Using a pair of phase current and voltage sensors per phase, the dead-time-related inverter voltage-distortion curve is monitored continuously. Its point-symmetrical nature is utilized for the sensor offset detection. This way, both sensor offsets can be calibrated continuously during operation and for each phase individually. This article gives a step-by-step description of the calibration algorithm and addresses implementation aspects to ensure deterministic calibration dynamics. This article presents the possibility of decreasing the inverter output voltage distortions that are caused by the typical distortions in the output voltage pulses of an impedance network using the qZ-source as an example. DC sources, such as photovoltaic cells with the qZ-source, increase the dc voltage; an impedance network operates in the continuous current mode and the discontinuous current mode (DCM). Both of these, but particularly DCM, implement the characteristic distortions to the impedance network output pulses, which results in the distortions in the inverter output voltage. It is possible to decrease these distortions in a passive way (increasing the capacitors of the network) or by using an efficient instantaneous controller of the inverter output voltage. Two controllers—a single-input single-output PID controller and a multi-input single-output improved passivity-based controller—were compared using the experimental model voltage source inverter with the input qZ-source. In a common dc-link dual-fed open-end winding permanent magnet synchronous motor (OEW-PMSM) topology, it is well known how the additional flow of a zero-sequence current (ZSC) is permitted. The low zero-sequence impedance characteristic of high-speed machines leads to high-intensity and high-frequency ripple of the ZSC. Therefore, there is a necessity to eliminate the zero-sequence-voltage (ZSV) produced by the two voltage source converters that feed the machine. Furthermore, the non-sinusoidal back electromagnetic force (back EMF) causes the circulation of a third harmonic ZSC. An OEW-PMSM high-speed starter-generator fed by a dual-inverter with a single dc-link is considered. Part I of this paper proposes a modulation for the considered topology able to eliminate instantaneously the ZSV produced. In this paper, a detailed analysis of the deadtime (DT) effect on the ZSV has been carried out and a novel hysteresis control for the ZSC using the DT as a control action is presented. A gate driving for power devices is a key technology to further improve switching characteristics. With the help of digital gate driver IC, the switching behavior of power devices can be enhanced even under high-speed switching. In this paper, an evaluation platform for determining the optimal switching pattern of an active gate drive control is proposed for an inverter circuit. A high speed optimization system is built up to search for an advantageous switching pattern that reduces total switching loss of two power devices in an inverter circuit and constrains surge voltage simultaneously. The proposed online optimization demonstrates its feasibility for the full-bridge inverter circuit, which is rated at 500 V with digital active gate drive control. Experimental results show that the proposed optimization system is able to obtain optimal switching pattern from $64^{60}$ possible combinations of switching patterns within 15 min, which is 6 times faster than the previous study. Optimizations can also conducted under different load current conditions. Eventually, the obtained optimal pattern yields up to 42% reduction in the total switching loss when it constrains surge voltage to minimum compared with the conventional driving pattern. High slew rate of the line voltage $(\boldsymbol {dv}/\boldsymbol {dt})$ has been a concern for power inverters based on the emerging wide bandgap switching devices, such as silicon carbide (SiC) mosfets. Particularly, for SiC-based power inverters feeding electric machines interconnected with long cables, there could be more severe insulation stress on the stator windings in electric machines, due to the higher dv/dt output from the SiC inverters. Compared to the conventional lower voltage electric transportation applications (e.g., 270 V dc), higher dc bus voltage of 500–600 V can dramatically reduce cable weight and systematic copper losses, hence improve the power density and efficiency of power converters. However, high dc bus voltage further increases the $\boldsymbol {dv}/\boldsymbol {dt}$ level in the converter ac line voltages. Driven by the necessity of developing SiC inverters with 500 V dc bus in electric transportation applications while attenuating the $\boldsymbol {dv}/\boldsymbol {dt}$ stress to a low level, this paper presents a multi-domain design approach for dv/dt filters that comprehensively considers the constraints in electrical, magnetic, and thermal domains. This paper presents a novel grid synchronization method with bumpless start that requires minimal computational load and can selectively track the positive sequence of the grid voltage in an unbalanced and distorted three-phase weak grid. Only 12 floating-point operations are required to obtain the in-phase and quadrature components that define a synchronous frame which tracks the positive sequence of the grid voltage. Contrary to a phase-locked loop (PLL), the presented scheme does not require to measure any ac voltages. Therefore, this sensorless method is particularly suited for weak-grid conditions, in which the voltage at the point of common coupling may contain significant noise and can experience larger deviations from the grid voltage (compared to a strong grid) due to the voltage drop in the weak grid impedance. The error in the estimated phase depends on the accuracy of the plant model. If the LCL filter parameters are known, then both the proposal and a PLL-based scheme result in the same steady-state error. This paper focuses on a fully distributed peer-to-peer control scheme for voltage regulation and reactive power sharing of multiple inverter-based distributed energy resources (DERs) in ac microgrids. The proposed peer-to-peer control strategy is fully distributed enabled through broadcast gossip communication, where each DER unit only requires local voltage and current measurement from its own and some (but not all) nearby neighbors for the voltage and reactive power sharing control. Employing the broadcast gossip communication protocol with attractive scalability and reliability properties, the control inputs can be updated to restore the voltage magnitudes at the point of common coupling to a desired value ensuring an accurate reactive power sharing for each DER. Since the proposed distributed controllers are implemented on local DERs, the central controller and hierarchy are no longer required. Accordingly, the microgrid system stability is preserved in the peer-to-peer requirements of line switches, which in turn, enables a plug-and-play operation of DERs and their robustness against microgrid topology change scenarios. In this paper, a regeneration protection solution is proposed to address the dc-link overvoltage issue and the unequal power sharing in the parallel uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems. First, a dc-link voltage protection control strategy is proposed to protect the inverter against the excessive dc-link voltage that may trigger the protection mechanism of the UPS system. In addition, an active power-sharing control strategy by regulating the virtual resistance is proposed to solve the circulating current caused by UPS regeneration issue. The switching speeds of next-generation power semiconductor devices, such as those made of silicon carbide and gallium nitride are roughly ten times those of conventional devices (e.g., silicon insulated-gate bipolar transistors). This increases the frequency range of the electromagnetic noise accompanying the switching operations of pulsewidth modulated (PWM) converters and worsens the influence of radiated noise. The authors have previously proposed an active common-mode filter (ACF) that reduces the radiated noise from the power cables connected to a PWM converter and evaluated its effect in reducing radiated noise by using a function generator as a common-mode (CM) noise source. In this paper, the ACF is applied to a motor drive system fed by a three-phase PWM inverter, and the attenuation characteristics of the CM voltage are evaluated. To avoid saturating the ACF, the combination of an active common-noise canceller and the ACF is discussed. The experimental results show that the system constructed in this paper can suppress the CM voltage produced by the PWM inverter over a wide frequency range from 100 to 100 MHz. To enhance the outage quality of a distribution system with a high penetration of photovoltaic (PV) renewable energy, this paper proposes a coordinating control strategy for an on-load tap changer (OLTC) of the main transformer in a distribution substation and PV smart inverters. The voltages at the end points of all distribution feeders that are served by the main transformer and the power generation of each PV system are collected using a SCADA system. The hourly tap position of the OLTC is then derived from the daily profiles of feeder voltage and the injected power that is generated by all PV systems along the feeder. Thereafter, the PV smart inverters perform autonomous control of reactive power compensation so that the voltage at the point of common coupling can be fixed at the specified voltage level. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed voltage-control strategy, a main transformer, which serves six feeders of the Taiwan Power Company(Taipower) with high PV penetration, was considered in a case study. The proposed coordinating control of the OLTC and PV smart inverters dramatically improved the voltage quality of the distribution feeder and enabled the effective mitigation of the impact of large PV integration in the distribution system. Impedance source inverters (ISIs) are gaining attention due to features such as single-stage conversion, buck-boost capability, and inherent shoot-through protection. To maintain the required ac output voltage, typically ISIs are operated at a higher dc-link voltage due to constrained modulation index. This also increases voltage stress across capacitors and switches of the converter. This voltage stress is approximately double compared to that of voltage source inverter with preboost stage (Boost-VSI). To mitigate this problem, a new pulsewidth modulation (PWM) scheme for the active-front-end based ISIs (AFE-ISIs) is proposed. The proposed scheme enables the ISIs to produce high ac gain with lower voltage stress across the capacitor and switches. In other words, the proposed scheme blends the advantages of Boost-VSI into ISIs. With the new PWM scheme, there are also reductions in output voltage total harmonic distortion, switching frequency ripple in the inductor current, and power loss in the converter. A prototype of the current-fed switched inverter, an AFE-ISI, is designed, and the proposed PWM scheme is implemented. Many research works report the use of LCL filters for grid-interfaced PV systems. Indiscreet selection of passive LCL filter parameters may result in poor filtering and increased power losses. LCL filter parameter selection is critical to get a good performance and at the same time ensure that losses and costs stay low. This paper proposes a novel approach to design the LCL filter for a grid-interfaced PV system. A cost-based minimization approach on a cost per joule basis for each of the filter elements is explored to obtain the optimal filter design. Simulation results for a 10-kVA grid-connected inverter with an LCL filter are presented in order to verify the efficacy of the proposed design. The impact of designed filter parameters on the ripple current is also discussed in this paper. The total inductance of the LCL filter is varied and filter parameter values which give lowest cost is identified while meeting harmonic standard requirements and the fundamental voltage drop across the filter. Finally, the proposed design is also experimentally validated via a hardware prototype. Results validate the design method in terms of the harmonic attenuation and total harmonic distortion. Grid-interactive inverters allow distributed generation units to provide various ancillary services in microgrids. As the linear modulation region of inverters is restricted by the dc-bus voltage, providing ancillary services may drive the fundamental positive-sequence inverter voltage to the overmodulation region. Therefore, to operate in the linear modulation region the maximum active- and reactive-power of the inverter may have to be reduced unless pulsewidth modulation (PWM) references are adjusted. In this paper, an atypical PWM method is proposed for maximizing dc-bus utilization of grid-interactive two-level voltage source inverters (2L-VSI) providing ancillary services. Two important ancillary services, i.e., negative-sequence compensation and harmonic compensation are considered in this paper. The proposed method increases the maximum active- and reactive-power that a 2L-VSI can deliver when providing ancillary services by injecting a common-mode component in the references computed based on instantaneous reference magnitudes. The impact of GaN mosfet and the performance of three-phase traction inverter for electric vehicles are closely investigated in this paper. Two versions of inverter have been illustrated: first one with Si-IGBTs, whereas the second one is built with GaN-mosfets with similar rating of voltage and current. The loss model is expounded for both the inverters; thereafter total losses are calculated considering New European Driving Cycle profile along the speed and torque of the permanent magnet synchronous motors. Further, for close-loop operation of propulsion drive, predictive current controller is proposed and compared with conventional PI controller while to control the speed, only PI controller is used. Moreover, the losses of both types of inverters are compared and the compared result confirmed that the inverter built up with GaN-mosfets with proposed current controller increases the efficiency of the propulsion drive leads to enhancement in driving range of the vehicles. A multifunctional grid-connected inverter (MFGCI) has been a promising solution to mitigate power quality problems in distributed generation system and microgrid applications. However, the capability of a conventional MFGCI is limited when compensating a voltage-based power quality problem. In this paper, a new configuration of MFGCI is proposed to improve both voltage-based and current-based power quality issues and is named shunt-series-switched MFGCI (SSS-MFGCI). The SSS-MFGCI can be connected in series or parallel to the grid by implementing bidirectional switches to provide different modes of operation depending on various grid disturbances. The required compensating current and voltage are analytically derived considering the grid and load conditions for voltage regulation. This paper also presents the compensation strategies, control scheme, and transition scheme between different modes of the proposed SSS-MFGCI. The active power distribution network operation with the integration of various renewable distributed generations (DGs), storage units, and dynamic loads are attracting a lot of interest due to substantial benefits in maximizing the penetration of available renewable energy resources (RES). However, the risk of voltage violation in the active distribution system (ADS) is exacerbated due to increasing penetration of DGs. It has become a bottleneck to maximize the DG penetration into the system. This bottleneck can be handled by effective voltage regulation and reactive power support into ADS. Nowadays, power electronic devices are frequently used for voltage and reactive power support over the conventional approaches. In this paper, an approach to maximize the penetration of RES, such as solar, wind, etc., into ADS by maximum utilization of existing solar photovoltaic inverters (SPVI) in the system is presented. Optimal utilization of SPVI may enhance the voltage stability of the ADS and wind power penetration into the system. The proposed SPVI control approaches are depended on active power generation of solar photovoltaic (SPVG), rating and capability of SPVI, and required reactive power in the ADS. In this paper, the problem of maximum penetration of RES is formulated as an optimal power flow embedded nonlinear optimization problem subject to the physical limitations of the SPVI. The results of the analysis performed on an IEEE 33 bus system show that the proposed SPVI control strategies can improve the voltage profile of the ADS with minimization of curtailment of wind power generation. Grid-tied inverters and associated control techniques have gained importance in the domain of distributed generation. Different methods of control have been compared in the literature depending upon the ability to meet total harmonic distortion limits, damping offered to resonant oscillations, and stable operation. Multiple-loop methods compared to their single-loop counterparts have proved to be highly effective for meeting the grid regulations. In the literature, while single-loop and two-loop control systems for LCL filter have been assessed, not much study on three-loop control (TLC) has been done, possibly due to the hardware complexity and cost imparted by the increase in the number of sensors. In this paper, a TLC structure for grid connected inverters is analyzed for stability and parametric variations. Robustness of TLC is compared with single-loop grid current feedback control and a two-loop control structure. An approach to estimate the state variables is proposed in this paper, which cuts down the number of sensors and cost of implementation. The performance of the system is analyzed through simulations and results are validated in a hardware setup, under dynamic and steady-state conditions, thereby showing that this is a promising approach. In this paper, a simplified robust control is proposed to improve the performance of a three-phase current controlled voltage source inverter connected to the grid through an inductive–capacitive–inductive (LCL) filter. The presence of the LCL-filter resonance complicates the dynamics of the control system and limits its overall performance, particularly when disturbances and parametric uncertainty are considered. To solve this problem, a robust active damping method based on the linear active disturbance rejection control (LADRC) is proposed. The simplification is made possible by order reduction in the plant transfer function using Padé approximation. Simulation results show that the proposed LADRC-based current controller achieves high power quality and good dynamic performance, in the presence of parameters uncertainties as well as external disturbances. This paper presents a new least-mean-square (LMS) algorithm based deadtime compensation method to suppress the current distortion in permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) field-oriented control (FOC) drives. Compared to conventional average value compensations, the proposed method is robust to switching device parameter variations thanks to the online adaptation capability of the LMS algorithm. Similarly, the disturbance observer compensators are also immune to switching device parameter variations; however, varying motor parameters degrade their compensation performance. Without prior knowledge of switching device or motor parameters, the proposed method can directly reduce the deadtime current harmonics by generating compensation voltage references. In addition, the proposed method is easy to implement since it does not require voltage errors estimation or current harmonics extraction, which are necessary for disturbance observer and adaptive filter based methods. In this paper, we present modifications to the sphere decoder initially introduced in the work of Geyer and Quevedo and modified in the work of Karamanakos et al. that significantly reduce the computation times during transients. The relative position of the unconstrained solution of the integer quadratic program underlying model predictive control (MPC) with respect to the convex hull of the (truncated) lattice of integer points is examined. If it is found that the unconstrained solution does not lie within the convex hull—a phenomenon that is observed mostly during transients—then a projection is performed onto the convex hull. By doing so, a new sphere that guarantees feasibility and includes a significant smaller number of candidate solutions is computed. This reduces the computation time by up to three orders of magnitude when solving the optimization problem at hand. Nonetheless, the reduction of the computational burden comes at a cost of (mild) suboptimal results. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is tested with a variable speed drive system consisting of a three-level neutral point clamped voltage source inverter and a medium-voltage induction machine. Based on the presented results, the sphere decoding algorithm with the proposed refinements maintains the very fast transient responses inherent to direct MPC. An adaptive control of DPWM implementable in clamped-three-level inverters with two strings of photovoltaic (PV) panels in cascaded connection is proposed in this paper. The proposed modulation is developed based on the so-called circuit-level decoupling concept. It is able to provide balance line voltage even under unbalanced dc links. The unequal dc voltages appeared due to asymmetric maximum point of power trackings (MPPTs) are controlled by proper injection of zero-sequence voltage to the common mode voltage, while the total dc voltage is regulated based on the voltage commands generated by the MPPT of each string. Thus, both PV strings are able to be operated based on their MPPTs while there is almost no low-order harmonic distortion at the inverter output current. Inverter dead-time is known to make open-loop induction motor drives oscillatory, while operating at light-loads in particular. While dead-time compensation schemes exist, precise compensation of the same is often challenging as it involves factors such as device and driver delays and switching transition times, which are difficult to be quantified accurately. Hence, the effect of dead-time could be under or overcompensated. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the impact of such undercompensation and overcompensation on the stability of a 100-kW induction motor drive, along with experimental investigations of the same. The effects of undercompensation and overcompensation on the inverter output voltage are analyzed on a switching-cycle average basis. Further, small-signal models are proposed for an open-loop drive, when it is undercompensated and overcompensated. Stability analysis of the above motor drive is reported, which predicts oscillatory behavior with both under and overcompensation, over certain fundamental frequency ranges, respectively. Further, two different types of oscillatory behavior, characterized by different oscillating frequencies, are observed for the cases of under and overcompensation. This paper presents an improved analytical model for estimating the high-frequency current ripple of interior permanent magnet synchronous machines due to pulsewidth modulation (PWM) switching. The proposed model accounts for the impact of slotting effect, magnetic saturation, and cross-coupling between the $d$ - and $q$ -axis. The model is subsequently used to investigate several factors that influence the PWM-induced current ripple. These include the PWM switching frequency, fundamental frequency (i.e., machine speed), dc-bus voltage, current control angle (i.e., γ angle), and the excitation current amplitude (i.e., saturation level). Experiments have been conducted to verify the analytical prediction results. These results show that the analytical model can predict the PWM-induced current ripple waveshape very well for many operating conditions and accurately estimate its rms value over a complete fundamental period. This paper proposes a zero-voltage ride-through (ZVRT) method and an LCL filter design method to meet the fault ride-through (FRT) requirements for a single-phase grid-connected inverter with a minimized LCL filter. A high inverter output current overshoot occurs at a grid voltage sag and a grid voltage recovery, when a low-inductance LCL filter design is employed in order to minimize the filter volume. In order to suppress the current overshoot, a high-speed gate-block operation and the design method of the minimized LCL filter are proposed. In particular, the filter design considers the delay time in the gate-block operation in order to clarify the reduction limitation of the inductance in the LCL filter. As a result, the maximum inverter output current overshoot is suppressed to 146% by the high-speed gate-block operation and the designed LCL filter, where the impedances of an interconnected inductor and a filter inductor are 1.0% and 0.78% of the inverter normalized impedance, respectively. This paper presents theoretical and experimental discussions on low-voltage-ride-through operation of a modular multilevel single-delta bridge-cell (SDBC) inverter intended for utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) systems. Modern grid codes require grid-tied inverters to provide dynamic grid support during grid-fault events by injecting reactive current. This paper discusses decoupled positive- and negative-sequence reactive-current control, focusing on asymmetric voltage sags with imbalanced magnitude and phase relationships. The main objective is to present a feedforward control method based on calculation of the zero-sequence current required for achieving power balance during normal and grid-fault conditions. Moreover, this paper demonstrates a practical method that minimizes overcurrent stress in the three inverter clusters by adjusting active power drawn from PV arrays. This paper investigates a multilevel inverter composed of series/parallel-connected H-bridges. The presented structure can be used for applications in which the use of semiconductor switches with low-voltage and low-current ratings is intended. A comprehensive system model, an overall control strategy to adjust the output voltage with constant magnitude and frequency, and a level-shifted PWM (LS-PWM) strategy based on a voltage vectors unidimensional analysis and a plane analysis are presented. The LS-PWM is capable of mitigating the low-frequency circulating current, thus generating multilevel voltage signals with low harmonic distortion, maximum number of levels, and low dv/dt. In addition, considering a wide range of values of voltages and currents and various power levels, the total converter losses are reduced compared with the conventional multilevel converters. The requirements for peripheral circuits of power converters are becoming more restrictive due to the enhancement of Si-based power devices and due to practical use of SiC device. In the design of modern high-speed switching converters, the stray inductances and capacitances both in the device package and in the gate drive circuit in addition to those in the main circuit of the power converter must be considered. In these situations, the gate driving technique represents the key technology for enhancement of high-speed switching ability of power devices, as there are design limitations to reduce the stray inductances and capacitances. So far, several active gate control methods have been proposed. Most conventional active gate drivers are configured using analog circuits such as transistors and diodes. Thus, it is difficult to reconfigure their control parameters to fit the stray inductances and capacitances after the implementation of power converter and gate circuits. As a solution to these problems, the authors have proposed a programmable gate driver IC, which is a digitally controlled circuit. This gate driver IC can control the gate current at 63 separate levels, operated by programmable fully digital 12-bit and clock signals. In this paper, an active gate current control based on the load current in a half-bridge inverter with two programmable gate driver ICs is demonstrated. This developed gate control is different to the general current feedback control followed the reference value. It is verified that the proposed active gate control can effectively improve the tradeoff relationship between the surge voltage and switching loss of the pulsewidth modulation half-bridge inverter circuit. This paper presents a nine-level transformer-based inverter requiring only eight switches. The envisaged structure consists of two standard H-bridges fed from a single dc source. Besides, a single-phase transformer is employed to aid the process of intermediate voltage level generation. An ad-hoc pulsewidth modulation scheme based on boolean logic form equations is developed to derive the gating pulses. An effortless extension of the proposed inverter to a higher number of voltage levels is also achieved by generalizing the switching functions. Furthermore, the superior performance of the proposed topology is demonstrated through a comprehensive cost-based analysis. This paper proposes new angles constraint for selective harmonic elimination-pulsewidth modulation (SHE)-PWM utilized in single-phase inverter applications. The proposed angles constraint naturally eliminates all triplen harmonics, whereas they conventionally appeared in all single-phase output voltages. The harmonic amplitude formula is developed based on the obtained angles constraint, and then modified single-phase SHE equations are defined to eliminate only specified low nontriplen harmonics. Therefore, more harmonics would be eliminated with the same switching frequency in modified SHE-PWM. Five-level voltage waveform has been opted to implement the introduced method, but it can be applied on all multilevel voltage waveforms such as seven-level with even number of angles. Unlike the conventional SHE technique, THD is analyzable in modified SHE to find optimum values for switching angles in order to control noneliminated harmonic amplitudes and minimize THD. Moreover, the cancellation of triplen harmonics empowers a single-phase inverter to supply nonlinear loads beside linear ones. Some experimental tests are accomplished using a single-phase five-level modified packed U-cell (MPUC) inverter. Results are discussed to prove the excellent performance of a single-phase MPUC inverter under both normal and harmonic loads and accurate elimination of determined triplen and nontriplen harmonics by applying the presented angles constraint. This paper introduces an isolated step-down impedance control network (ICN) resonant dc–dc converter that utilizes enhanced inverter and rectifier phase-shifts to achieve both soft switching and output voltage regulation. Compared to previously presented ICN converters, which utilize burst-mode control to achieve output voltage regulation, this ICN converter with the proposed enhanced phase-shift control has dramatically reduced output capacitance requirement. The avoidance of burst-mode control also simplifies the design of the converter's input electromagnetic interference filter, reduces switch stresses due to overshoots during repeated startup transitions, and improves converter efficiency by eliminating startup and shutdown losses as well as by reducing conduction losses when backing off in power. A closed-loop control architecture for the ICN converter operated under enhanced phase-shift control is also proposed, wherein state-feedback control is incorporated to guarantee stability and achieve good dynamic performance across wide variations in input voltage and output power. A prototype 1-MHz, 120-W step-down ICN converter designed for an input voltage range of 18–75 V, an output voltage of 12 V, and a 10:1 output power range is built and tested with both burst-mode control and the proposed enhanced phase-shift control. When operated with enhanced phase-shift control, the prototype ICN converter achieves a peak efficiency of 95.7% and maintains full-power efficiency above 91.7% across its 4:1 input voltage range. Compared to when operated under burst-mode control, the ICN converter with enhanced phase-shift control reduces converter losses by up to 30% and reduces the output capacitance requirement by two orders of magnitude. The prototype ICN converter is also operated under closed-loop control using a digitally implemented controller based on the proposed architecture, and is shown to successfully regulate its output voltage in the face of input voltage and load variations. This paper introduces an enhanced speed self-sensing method that tracks the stator flux linkage in induction machines at very-low speeds. Volt–second sensing technology is used to mitigate the inverter nonlinearity, which is the major source of flux estimation error in the very-low-speed range. By integrating volt–second sensing in the Gopinath style closed-loop flux observer, the rotor speed information with more precision and lower noise is extracted from the estimated stator flux. Experimental results show that the proposed self-sensing method extends the low-speed operating range, reduces the speed and torque ripple, and increases the disturbance rejection capability compared with the traditional self-sensing method based on the voltage integration method and the back electromotive force (EMF) tracking method. In order to prevent the power switching devices (e.g., an insulated-gate bipolar transistor, IGBT) from shoot-through in voltage-source converters during a switching period, the dead time is added either in the hardware driver circuits of the IGBTs or implemented in software in pulse width modulation (PWM) schemes. Both solutions will contribute to a degradation of the injected current quality. As a consequence, the harmonics induced by the dead time (referred to as “dead-time harmonics” hereafter) have to be compensated in order to achieve a satisfactory current quality, as required by standards. In this paper, the emission mechanism of dead-time harmonics in single-phase PWM inverters is, thus, presented considering the modulation schemes in detail. More importantly, a repetitive controller has been adopted to eliminate the dead-time effect in single-phase grid-connected PWM converters. The repetitive controller has been plugged into a proportional-resonant-based fundamental-frequency current controller so as to mitigate the dead-time harmonics and also to maintain the control of the fundamental-frequency grid current in terms of dynamics. Simulations and experiments are provided, which confirm that the repetitive controller can effectively compensate the dead-time harmonics and other low-order distortions, and also, it is a simple method without hardware modifications. This paper presents a novel digital control strategy for the islanding mode operation of a power electronics-based energy management system (EMS). Thanks to the use of a high-performance repetitive controller combined with active damping, the EMS is capable of supplying a high-quality sinusoidal voltage to critical loads when the ac grid is not available. The proposed control scheme is analyzed and implemented in a field-programmable gate array-based control platform; it achieves a very low output voltage total harmonic distortion and holds a large stability margin for a wide range of load conditions. Analysis and simulations demonstrate the superiority of the proposed controller versus open-loop control. The increasing share of distributed generation (DG) offers new chances in grid restoration of low-voltage distribution grids. Instead of relying on the transmission or high- and medium-voltage levels, establishing islanding operation in low-voltage grids might be a good option after a wide-area voltage collapse. This paper proposes a restoration strategy from zero-voltage conditions for inverter-interfaced DG under islanded conditions. In the approach, a flexible and scalable master DG inverter concept is introduced for DGs, where no communication is needed and an outage of the master can be balanced by other DG inverters. The control strategy ensures the tracking of nominal values of the system voltage and frequency without zero steady-state error. With more renewable energy based distributed generation (DG) units connected to utility power grids, deterioration of power quality at the point of common coupling (PCC) becomes a major concern. There are two types of harmonics associated with DG units, and together they may cause excessive harmonic distortion at the PCC. The first type of harmonics is generated by power electronic devices in DG units such as photovoltaic systems, which contains high-frequency harmonic components at multiples of the carrier frequency of the DG interfacing inverter. Such harmonics are first reviewed in this paper, and the potential operational effect at the system level due to LCL or LC filters installed at the inverter output to mitigate such harmonics are discussed. The second type of harmonics is generated by other nonlinear local, PCC, and utility loads in the system, which are common type of harmonics at multiples of the power grid frequency, 50/60 Hz. Harmonic mitigation for such harmonics achieved through advanced control of the DG interfacing inverter operated as a power quality conditioner are reviewed and summarized. This systematic review can facilitate better understanding of harmonics associated with renewable energy based DG units and provide guidelines on advanced control schemes to realize ancillary harmonic compensation service through DG interfacing inverters. Three optimized pulse-width modulated (PWM) techniques for the overmodulation region of two-level inverter-fed ac drives are introduced and investigated from the harmonic loss minimization point of view. The optimization is elaborated for the lowest loss-factor, which is proportional to the square of the root mean square value of current harmonics. The loss-factors are computed for different switching numbers as the function of the motor fundamental voltage. It is shown that, with respect to the motor heating and torque ripples, the acceptable drive condition can be guaranteed by a relatively low value of an inverter switching frequency up to 96%–97% of maximal possible motor voltage. Furthermore, it is shown that the so-called three-vector methods have considerably better performance in the lower part of the overmodulation region than the so-called two-vector method for the same number of switching. This paper presents a new compact three-phase cascaded multilevel inverter (CMLI) topology with reduced device count and high-frequency magnetic link. The proposed topology overcomes the predominant limitation of separate dc power supplies, which CMLI always require. The high-frequency magnetic link also provides a galvanic isolation between the input and output sides of the inverter, which is essential for various grid-connected applications. The proposed topology utilizes an asymmetric inverter configuration that consists of cascaded H-bridge cells and a conventional three-phase two-level inverter. A toroidal core is employed for the high-frequency magnetic link to ensure compact size and high-power density. Compared with counterpart CMLI topologies available in literature, the proposed inverter has the advantage of utilizing the least number of power electronic components without compromising the overall performance, particularly when a high number of output voltage levels is required. A constant switching frequency hysteresis controller based on current error space vector (CESV) for two-level voltage source inverter fed induction motor (IM) drive is proposed in this paper. Here the stator voltages along the α- and β-axes are estimated using current error information and steady-state model of IM. Estimated stator voltages, switching dwell times, and instantaneous voltage error vectors are used in the online hysteresis boundary computations. The steady-state CESV boundaries and the phase voltage normalized harmonic spectrum of the proposed hysteresis controller at different speeds resembles that of a constant switching frequency voltage-controlled bus clamping pulse-width modulation-based drive. The proposed controller exhibits adjacent voltage vector switching, fast dynamic response under transient conditions, and has a simple controller implementation. This paper presents a simplified implementation technique for direct torque control (DTC) of asymmetric six-phase induction motor drive. Current harmonics of fifth and seventh order are observed in the phase currents if conventional DTC scheme is extended for the asymmetric six-phase machine. These harmonic components are not responsible for torque production, thus causing losses in the motor winding. Synthetic vectors are generally used for reduction of current harmonics. Average voltage in $xy$ subspace is maintained to zero by synthetic vectors leading to reduction of currents in $xy$ subspace. A simplified method of implementation of synthetic vectors is proposed in this paper, which eliminates the need for designing of switching sequence and requirement of field-programmable gate array.
