A Midwestern pulp and paper mill had arc-flash ratings around 100 cal/cm2 on 50 480-V unit substations. New relays were installed to replace the existing protection and add light detection to improve arc-flash detection times. During a couple of one-day outages, sample installations took place. During the cold mill outage, 44 installations were completed over 12 days by working around the clock. Old relays were removed, new plates were mounted and wired in, and fiber sensors were routed through the buswork and into the breaker cubicles. Fuses are commonly used to provide medium voltage (MV) protection to distribution transformers. Unfortunately, there are certain deficiencies introduced when primary-side fuses are used. In paper mill power systems, given the unique organization of the paper mill loads around individual feeders to facilitate load shedding, it may be advantageous to provide transformer differential relay protection from the primary of the transformer to the load side of the main secondary breaker instead of primary fuse protection. This protection can then trip either a primary-side grounding switch (with fuses) or a primary-side feeder circuit breaker using a fiber or a WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) connection. Measurement of transformer remaining useful life has long been a goal for responsible asset management. Most testing laboratories offer furan concentration testing as a suitable method. The interpretive method of choice is usually the Chendong equation, expressed in practical terms as degree of polymerization of the paper with new paper at about 1000 and end of life at around 300. Typical mill transformers have thermal insulation ratings expressed as 55 °C rise for plain kraft or 65 °C, which corresponds to thermally upgraded kraft paper (TUP). It has been determined that TUP does not produce furans and, thus, provides a false indicator of the cellulose breakdown. There are several recent papers that have demonstrated that a measurement of methanol (MeOH) may be a better method to determine ageing of the TUP insulation and also better for transformers with plain kraft paper insulation. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the reasons why furans should not be used as the basis for measuring aging of thermally upgraded paper, why MeOH should be so used, and to compare actual furans and MeOH test data for service aged transformers in a process industry application [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chipper motors in pulp and paper mill environment are of special design—the stability on impact loads is one important consideration. The power factor under normal operation will continuously swing due to varying loads. This paper describes the guesswork-free rigorous calculations of pull-out (out-of-step) power factor based on the parameter of an actual installation. Single phasing is rather a rare occurrence; however, such an event has been experienced in an installation due to overheating and arcing at the fuse clips in a NEMA E2 starter of a chipper motor. An accurate discrimination on moisture status of oil-impregnated paper (OIP) bushings is crucial for the maintenance and replacement schedule of bushings. Based on frequency-domain spectroscopy (FDS) measurement and Dissado–Hill (DH) relaxation model, this article proposes a hybrid approach of hidden Markov model and gray wolf optimization (GWO-HMM) for MS estimation of bushings subjected to the ununiform moisture distribution and dynamic time-series modeling. First, simulation models of moisture diffusion and FDS of the OIP bushing were constructed using finite element modeling approach. Then, the GWO algorithm was employed to explore dielectric parameters influenced by moisture in the DH model. Then, the GWO-HMMs was adopted as a classification tool to discriminate the MS of the simulation and experimental data of the bushings. Classification results confirm that the average identification accuracies of the proposed method are 97.17% and 96.81% over these two datasets, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed moisture estimate method for OIP bushings. This paper presents a dual active bridge (DAB) converter with reactive power control capability (Q-capability) for a battery energy storage system (BESS) or an electric vehicle (EV) to deliver vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) services. The DAB topology is preferable for EV charging systems due to its galvanic isolation and bidirectional power flow capabilities. However, this topology increases reactive current peak and loses zero voltage switching (ZVS) operation at light loads if it is not controlled with improved modulation strategies and proper Q control. This paper proposes a mixed modulation method and a reactive power optimization (RPO) algorithm based on power system load flow concepts. Due to the complexities associated with the analytical solution using time domain analysis, this paper develops detailed universal expressions of a DAB converter using the harmonic analysis method. Analytical identification of ZVS boundaries and DSP implementation of the RPO algorithm become easier with these universal expressions. Multiple modes analysis for different operational states is no longer required. Simulation results have been shown for different modulation strategies of the DAB converters. The theoretical analysis of modulation strategies, RPO algorithm and ZVS operation are validated by experimental results on a DAB prototype. In this paper, a sizing method is proposed for photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage systems (BESSs) for buildings with demand side management capability. Three objective functions (OF) are defined, describing the self-sufficiency of the building, the net-present value of the investment in PV and BESS, and their combination in a joint expression, respectively. The latter OF provides cost-effective solutions that are potentially more profitable in case of future high increase of the electricity cost. Two analysis methods are developed to find the optimal solution under a predefined load shifting strategy. The first one applies an exhaustive search by examining all possible combinations of PV and BESS capacity. The drawback of this method is the high computational burden due to unnecessary access to the solution space. The second method is implemented with a particle swarm optimization (PSO) variant, namely the unified-PSO. Under this approach, the analysis algorithm is guided in the solution space toward efficient solutions under lower computational time. The comparative assessment of the two methods in both residential and industrial sites verifies that via the PSO algorithm the optimal solutions are found under lower execution time. This article presents the calculation procedure of short circuits adopting the characteristic currents method (CCM). In a previous paper by the author G. Parise, the CCM has been upgraded with the introduction of “characteristic” countercurrents and the generalization of the Kirchhoff laws. For illustrating the calculation procedure, the selected case study deals with a low voltage cold ironing system where multiple ships are allowed to operate simultaneously on one shore power transformer and, so, a comparison has been developed between the IEC approach of the short-circuit calculation and the CCM. The power systems are transitioning to renewables. The power system infrastructure digitalization is the next stage in this evolution. A digitalized future distribution network (DN) has an opportunity to evolve into real-time analysis based on a huge volume of data. Such real-time analysis will be feasible through the integration of the theoretical background of fault analysis and machine learning techniques. Fault location is one of the major issues to improve reliability indices. The voltage sags characterization is used to locate faults in the DN. This article presents a methodology to characterize voltage sags using fault analysis and deep convolutional neural networks. The voltage divider model allows the characterization and the discrete wavelet transform is used in signal processing. The machine learning and deep learning models used allow estimating the sag magnitude, fault location, phases involved, duration, and impact of distributed generation (DG) in each event. The IEEE 13-node test feeder including DG was used to validate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. A multi-level boost topology based on a flying capacitor is compared in this work with the hybrid, multi-level, partial power processing topology already presented in the literature for use as a highly efficient and compact dc/dc stage in 1500-V, two-stage, grid-connected PV systems. Different variations of the resonant stage of the hybrid topology are analyzed and compared in terms of losses, volume and complexity. Full multivariable optimization is conducted for the multi-level boost topology with different number of levels and for all the analyzed variations of the resonant stage of the hybrid topology. Appropriately rated new classes of 650-V and 900-V WBG devices are included in the optimization algorithm. It is concluded that due to the dominant conduction losses and gap in the voltage rating of the commercially available WBG devices between 650V and 200V, increase of the number of levels over 4 leads to the deteriorated loss and volume performances. All the analysis related to the resonant stage of the hybrid topology is confirmed by detailed and comprehensive measurements of two prototypes of 4kW of nominal and 7kW of maximal power. Additionally, all the loss models applied in the optimization algorithms presented in this paper are confirmed by detailed measurements, thermal calibration and finite element thermal simulations of the wide bandgap devices and inductor designs employed in this work. The successful mission of CubeSat require reliable and fault-tolerant electrical power system (EPS) that powers all the other subsystems and payloads. Several studies have shown that EPS failure has been one of the main contributors for the CubeSat mission failure. The main objective of this paper is to enhance the lifetime of CubeSats EPS by proposing a distributed EPS architecture and power-down mode. The distributed architecture consists of independent converters for maximum power point tracking operation of photovoltaic (PV) panels. This is possible by using gallium nitride field-effect transistors to reduce the converter footprint and placing the converters on the back-side of the PV panels. Also, single-inductor based $N$ -1 redundant converters for generation and load-side are proposed to provide uninterrupted operation during component failures. Thus, the proposed distributed architecture not only improves the reliability but also facilitates placement of redundant converters to achieve the fault-tolerant capability. To further reduce the electrical and thermal stresses on the semiconductor devices and thus, improve the EPS life span, a novel power-down mode is proposed for the power converters. In this mode, semiconductor devices are switched-off whenever the power processed is below the threshold level and/or no-load operation. Reliability block diagrams are illustrated to demonstrate the reliability improvement and calculations shows that the proposed distributed architecture has higher reliability than the conventional EPS architecture. Wireless power transfer (WPT) technology has become a popular research direction in the field of industrial applications, with the advantages of contactless operation, high degree of freedom, and great controllability. However, there are still some challenging issues that need to be resolved. First of all, more advanced circuit topologies and magnetic coupling structures need to be designed to achieve the power conversion goals of diversified applications. Second, novel control methods, optimization algorithms, and modeling methods enable systems to be better controlled and designed. Finally, potential application scenarios need to be discovered so that this novel power transfer method can be applied in more suitable applications. Therefore, this topic is organized by the responsible editor to gather the power of more scholars. Submarine cables are indispensable for offshore wind farms (OWFs) connected to a power grid. The submarine cable can cause certain degrees of impact on the system performance due to its different lengths, characteristics, electrical parameters, etc. This paper employs the power-system simulation software of Power System Simulator for Engineering (PSS/E) for modeling a future-scheduled OWF, i.e., a large-scale doubly-fed induction generator-based OWF of 200 MW, connected to Jang-Bin distribution substation of Taiwan Power System through five feeders, five circuit breakers, two step-up power transformers, a commercial submarine cable, and an underground cable. This paper simulates and compares the electrical quantities of the studied OWF with different operating capacities under various lengths of three types of commercial submarine cable. The transient surge peak voltages at the common bus of the OWF and the bus of Jang-Bin distribution substation subject to the switching of one of the five circuit breakers of the studied OWF under different lengths of the three types of commercial submarine cable are also compared using the power-system simulation software of ATPDraw in Alternative Transients Program (ATP) version of Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP). Owing to the intermittency issue associated with renewable energy sources, a solar photovoltaic (PV) array fed grid interfaced encoder-less permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) based solar water pumping (SWP) system is presented in this paper. The grid integration enables a continuous water flow regardless of available solar insolation. However, it has been observed that the grids in developing and underdeveloped countries are mostly weak. Moreover, as SWP systems are typically established at remote locations, which are generally the grid radial ends, therefore, prone to various grid abnormalities. Such abnormalities affect the SWP system performance. Therefore, a hybrid multi-resonant generalized integrator-frequency locked loop (HMRGI-FLL) control structure is presented in this paper to deal with the abnormalities in grid voltage and makes the SWP system operational even under weak grid condition. The proposed structure not only rejects the dc-offset but it also eliminates the dominant lower order harmonic with its selective harmonic elimination capability. A boost converter is used on the grid side to facilitate the power transfer from the grid. In condition of grid failure, the output water flow is regulated in accordance with available solar insolation. The speed of the PMSM is regulated using sensor-less vector control. Performance of the proposed system is experimentally validated using a laboratory prototype under varying solar insolation, during grid failure, during voltage sag, voltage swell, and distorted grid voltage conditions. Multilevel inverters (MLIs) are playing a pivotal role in the power sector with potential applications, such as interfacing renewable energy sources with the grid and several industrial drive applications. MLIs with a smaller number of switching devices are more promising due to their compact size, reduced cost, and higher efficiency compared with their traditional counterparts. This paper, therefore, presents a new three-phase seven-level inverter. This topology is a combination of two cascade-connected two-level voltage-source inverters (VSIs) and H-bridge cells with flying capacitors (FCs). This paper presents the operating principle and the balancing technique for the dc-link capacitors and FCs. The generation of various output voltage levels and the limitation of the sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation control for FC voltage balancing is also presented. The number of components in the proposed circuit configuration and their voltage ratings are considerably lower compared with the recently proposed topologies. The behavior of the proposed circuit configuration is first assessed with simulation studies and is then tested with a laboratory prototype. This paper presents a novel control strategy to significantly reduce the high-frequency transformer loss in a modular solid-state transformer (SST) based converter system. The modular SST design is based on an ac–dc power-electronic building block comprised of an H-bridge at the ac input and a bidirectional soft-switching isolated dc–dc converter with a medium-voltage insulated high-frequency transformer. The ac terminals of input H-bridges are connected in series and directly coupled to the medium-voltage ac line, while the output dc terminals are all connected in parallel at a low voltage. The key innovation described in this paper, without sacrificing the output performance, is the control scheme that reduces core and winding losses associated with the dc–dc resonant stage by turning off the selected dc–dc converters in synchronism with the line voltage. The prototype for the test described in this paper is based on a modular SST where each module is rated at 50 kVA, with a 200 kHz transformer using 1.7 kV silicon carbide discrete mosfets, but the described control concepts are more broadly applicable to similar topologies. Reliable operation of multichannel power electronic converters in a large pumped storage power plant (PSPP) is a main concern among policymakers and/or hydropower project developers. This paper aims to design a two-stage protection circuit operation strategy for a large-rated doubly fed induction machine (DFIM) employed for variable-speed PSPPs. This paper initially studies the dynamic behavior of DFIM under symmetrical short-circuit faults in both the 400-kV power system and at stator terminal of the generating unit. Based on the fault analysis, a two-stage protection circuit (dc-link braking chopper circuit and crowbar protection circuit) operation strategy is designed in consideration of practical limitations. The designed operation strategy ensures the continuous operation of large-rated DFIM under marginal grid disturbances. To investigate the effective operation of a two-stage protection circuit, a 250-MW DFIM with multichannel power converters is implemented in MATLAB/Simulink tool. In recent time, the use of fractional-slot concentrated-winding (FSCW) stator has made it possible to drive the interior permanent magnet synchronous motors in very deep flux-weakening speed range. Many of such motors can operate along the maximum torque per voltage (MTPV) trajectory during the deep flux-weakening operation. Performances of the FSCW interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) while operating along the MTPV trajectory in the deep flux-weakening region under sensorless direct torque and flux control are yet to be investigated thoroughly. A 14-pole/18-slot FSCW IPMSM, which has a flux-weakening speed range of 9:1, was investigated in this paper. The position and speed were estimated using a sliding mode observer. Experimental results showed that satisfactory dynamic operation was possible during deep flux weakening only when a voltage compensation technique was integrated. This paper attempts to investigate the underlying reasons behind the requirement of the additional voltage compensation during deep flux weakening in the FSCW IPMSM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper deals with a multilevel ac–ac double conversion system that uses the intercell transformer (ICT) for applications which include generating systems and the interfacing of renewable energy sources with the utility grids. Each phase of the proposed configuration is formed through the ICT interleaving operation of two multilevel 5-level E-type legs to achieve the 3-phase 5-level back-to-back E-type converter (3Φ5L BTB E-type converter). The analytical procedure to select the inductance and capacitance values of both the input and output filters is described in the paper. Furthermore, the design and implementation of the input/output ICTs and inductors is discussed. In the field of high-voltage transmission systems, different degradation phenomena affect the reliability of the employed components. In particular, under dc stress, the space charge accumulation phenomenon is believed to be the most responsible of the dielectrics lifetime reduction. To measure the accumulated space charges in flat specimens, the pulsed electro-acoustic (PEA) method is one of the most used techniques. The working principle of the PEA cell is based on the acoustic waves propagation and detection. As is well known, the acoustic waves propagating in different means are partially transmitted and partially reflected. Therefore, the piezoelectric sensor of the PEA cell is subjected to both direct and reflected waves. The latter, which are also present in the PEA cell output signal, if are not taken into account, could be easily confused as a charge accumulation. For this reason, in this paper, the acoustic waves’ behavior within the PEA cell has been simulated in order to avoid incorrect interpretation of the PEA cell output charge profiles. In this paper, compared to other works present in the literature in which only the surface charges were considered, the space charges accumulated in the insulation bulk are also considered for a complete analysis of the waves behavior during the PEA measures. The results found in this paper are very useful for cable manufacturing industries in which the choice of the dielectric materials is strongly influenced by the space charge accumulation phenomenon. SiC-based diodes and mosfets switch extremely quickly with low conduction losses. Thus, from the perspective of efficiency, such devices are ideal for a continuous conduction mode (CCM) boost power factor correction (PFC) converter. However, the circuit parasitic becomes alive while switching with high $dv/dt$ and $di/dt$ values, which necessitates the need for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) compliance measurements. Employing the best available low-loss SiC mosfet and SiC diode, in this paper, a 1-kW PFC boost converter prototype was designed, developed, and evaluated with the objective of quantifying the efficiency and EMC signature. The efficiency is evaluated through two approaches, namely, a circuit simulation and a laboratory measurement. With the first approach, the switching losses are obtained using a widely accepted double-pulse test methodology, and the conduction losses are taken from the data sheet, whereas with the second approach, the current and voltage are recorded at the input and output of the PFC converter using power analyzer. The electromagnetic interference (EMI) is monitored using line impedance stabilizing network and EMC analyzer. To maximize the efficiency, a fast, clean switching of the silicon carbide (SiC) is necessary. Utilizing a low-parasitic printed circuit board design approach and switching the selected low-loss SiC devices with a 0  $\Omega$ external gate drive resistance, this PFC boost yields a peak efficiency of 97.2% at full-rated power when switched at 250 kHz. Furthermore, the EMI noise was measured at 66 and 250 kHz. It was found that the same EMI filter size satisfies the CISPR 11 Class B conducted EMI limit at both switching frequencies with a noise of approximately 10 dB higher at 250 kHz. Power grid resilience, reliability, and sustainability can be improved significantly by decomposing the large grids into networked microgrids (NMGs). However, the optimal energy management problem and preserving the security in NMGs are more complicated and challenging. This paper aims to propose a secured stochastic energy management framework for NMGs based on the modified blockchain approach, utilizing the directed acyclic graph (DAG). Using the decentralized and transparent blockchain technology will help to have higher security and lower risks within the network, thus eliminating the financial fraud and cutting down the total operational cost. In order to address the issues arising in the traditional blockchain models, mainly due to the storage and high complexities of hash address calculations, this paper proposes a new modified blockchain technology based on the DAG method. Also, a novel data restoration technique is developed to provide a way to restore the data with appropriate accuracy. The unscented transform (UT) approach is employed to model the uncertainties of forecast error in hourly load demand, solar power output, and wind turbines power output. Finally, the proposed model is tested on an NMG system with four MGs, including two residential MGs (as the noncrucial loads), a commercial MG (as the intermediate level loads), and a hospital MG (as the crucial loads). The grid voltage information such as the phase-angle, the frequency, and the amplitude is crucial for the design of synchronization and control of power converters in the micro-grid. The conventional approach to estimate the grid voltage information is accomplished by phase-locked loop (PLL) techniques. Among various existing PLL techniques, filter-based PLLs can provide more accurate estimations even under adverse grid conditions. In this paper, a new single-phase filtering technique based on multiple delayed signal cancellation (MDSC) is proposed for extracting both in-phase and quadrature components of the selected harmonic order of the single-phase grid voltage signal. This MDSC technique can be realized in both the direct-form and the recursive-form. In comparison with existing single-phase cascaded delayed signal cancellation (CDSC) techniques, this MDSC technique utilizes less memory for the extraction of grid voltage fundamental frequency component. The proposed MDSC filter can be applied as a pre-filter to the enhanced PLL (EPLL) for the prompt and accurate estimations of the grid voltage information under adverse grid conditions. Both frequency adaptive and non-adaptive MDSC-based EPLL schemes are proposed in this paper. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed methods, experiments are conducted on the MDSC-based EPLLs and compared with the CDSC-EPLL under various grid voltage disturbances. The energy blockchain is a distributed Internet protocol for energy transactions between nodes of a power system. Recent applications of the energy blockchain in microgrids only consider the energy transactions between peers without considering the technical issues that can arise, especially when the system is islanded. One contribution of the paper is, thus, to depict a comprehensive framework of the technical and economic management of microgrids in the blockchain era, considering, for the first time, the provision of ancillary services and, in particular, of the voltage regulation service. When more PV nodes are operating in the grid, large reactive power flows may appear in the branches. In order to limit such flows, a reactive optimal power flow (R-OPF) is solved, setting the voltage at the PV buses as variables within prescribed limits. Each PV generator will thus contribute to voltage regulation, receiving a remuneration included in the transaction and certified by the blockchain technology. For showing how this system can work, a test microgrid, where some energy transactions take place, has been considered. For each transaction, the R-OPF assigns the reactive power to the PV buses. The R-OPF is solved by a glow-worm swarm optimizer. Finally, the paper proposes a method for remuneration of reactive power provision; this method, integrated into the blockchain, allows evaluating the contribution to voltage regulation and increases the transparency and cost traceability in the transactions. In a common dc-link dual-fed open-end winding permanent magnet synchronous motor (OEW-PMSM) topology, it is well known how the additional flow of a zero-sequence current (ZSC) is permitted. The low zero-sequence impedance characteristic of high-speed machines leads to high-intensity and high-frequency ripple of the ZSC. Therefore, there is a necessity to eliminate the zero-sequence-voltage (ZSV) produced by the two voltage source converters that feed the machine. Furthermore, the non-sinusoidal back electromagnetic force (back EMF) causes the circulation of a third harmonic ZSC. An OEW-PMSM high-speed starter-generator fed by a dual-inverter with a single dc-link is considered. Part I of this paper proposes a modulation for the considered topology able to eliminate instantaneously the ZSV produced. In this paper, a detailed analysis of the deadtime (DT) effect on the ZSV has been carried out and a novel hysteresis control for the ZSC using the DT as a control action is presented. In this paper, a dual-fed (DF) common dc-link topology open-end winding permanent magnet synchronous motor for aircraft high-speed starter–generator application is considered. While on one hand the common dc bus configuration significantly simplifies and reduces the costs of the topology, on the other hand it allows the zero-sequence current (ZSC) to flow freely in the system. High-speed machines are characterized by low phase inductance, which implies low zero-sequence impedance. A small time constant of the zero-sequence circuit produces a high-frequency, high-intensity ZSC ripple with the risk of harming the switching devices. This paper presents a novel hybrid space vector pulsewidth modulation that allows to instantaneously eliminate the zero-sequence voltage (ZSV) produced by the two voltage source converters (VSCs) by square wave modulating one of the two VSCs. The non-sinusoidal machine back electromotive force (EMF) has been considered and the effect of the converters’ dead time on the ZSV has been analyzed. The square-wave-modulated VSC uses insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) devices, whereas the other uses Silicon Carbide (SiC) technology. With the rapid development of photovoltaic and fuel cell stacks, high voltage gain converters are urgently demanded. Conventional boost is limited by the exaggerated duty cycle, it is impossible to obtain a high voltage gain while ensuring efficiency. Therefore, a zero-voltage switching (ZVS)-modified SEPIC converter that combines a voltage multiplier cell with traditional SEPIC is proposed in this paper. With detailed parameters design process, this presented converter works at zero voltage switching (ZVS), while obtaining high voltage gain without extremely high duty cycle. Besides, voltage stress is also reduced and low-voltage component with lower parasitic parameters can be used, thus efficiency is maintained. In order to further improve the power density, an integrated inductor scheme is adopted in this paper without changing intrinsic working states of the two inductors. A 36-W prototype is built, and experiments are conducted to verify the advantages of the proposed converter. The efficiency is up to 91.5% at full load. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes a soft-switched modulation technique with synchronous rectification for an isolated single-stage single-phase matrix-type dc–ac converter. The dc side consists of a full bridge inverter, and the ac side is a 2×2 matrix converter-based cycloconverter. The proposed unipolar modulation strategy provides zero current switching/zero voltage switching (ZVS) for the ac side devices and ZVS-on for the dc side devices. It also allows natural commutation of the current flowing through the secondary side leakage inductor of the isolation transformer and the grid inductor during unity power factor (UPF) condition, thus eliminates the requirement of snubber circuit. An improved soft-switched flyback-based regenerative snubber circuit is also presented for non-UPF operation. Proposed snubber circuit recycles the energy stored in the snubber capacitors in every switching cycle. A guideline to design snubber circuit along with a comparative study is discussed in this paper. Performance of the proposed hybrid modulation technique is evaluated in an SiC mosfet based 1.2-kW dc–ac converter prototype. This paper provides an experimental discussion on a real-time real-power emulator that plays an important role in achieving a total test of medium-voltage, high-power, high-speed induction motor drives. The use of the emulator brings cost and time savings to the test. The test bench including the emulator is characterized by connecting two modular multilevel double-star chopper-cell (DSCC) converters connected in a front-to-front way. This paper designs, builds, and tests a 400- ${\rm V}_{\rm dc}$ , 10-kW downscaled test bench. It mainly consists of the following two identical DSCC converters: 1) one DSCC converter is used as an inverter under test; and 2) the other as a real-time real-power high-fidelity emulator. Experimental waveforms confirm that the emulator can reproduce electrical and mechanical operating performance of the three-phase 200-V, 10-kW, four-pole, 9000-r/min induction motor loaded with a centrifugal compressor. After a transformer failed following a double-phase fault, there was an interest in understanding how the fault mechanism led to the failure. This paper investigates this fault condition in detail and demonstrates the underlying challenges in correcting the failure. The electrical and thermal system models were developed and simulated to analyze the transformer response under double-phase fault conditions. Experimental measurements validated the simulation results on a real three-phase distribution transformer. The number of applicable carrier-based pulsewidth modulation (PWM) patterns increases with the growth of output levels in scalable multilevel topologies, such as active-neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) converters. Therefore, it is hard to optimize PWM for such topology, especially with large output levels. In this paper, a simplified and modular carrier-based PWM design approach for multilevel ANPC converters is proposed. Inspired by the decomposition theory, the topology decomposition is introduced in this paper to decompose an N-level ANPC converter into low-level subtopologies. Then, the complete set of applicable PWM patterns is derived based on ANPC operation principles, which makes it possible to optimize the performance based on the various requirements in applications. Meanwhile, the carrier-based PWM is implemented through the utilization of subtopologies with low-level modulation schemes, such that the design process of carrier-based PWM is greatly simplified and modularly realized. Both the complete PWM patterns and PWM design examples with experimental results of several ANPC converters are provided to show the feasibility and modularity of the proposed method. The staircase modulation strategy is the best choice for asymmetric cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (ACMI) because it makes the output voltage to present a high number of levels and makes one of the ACMI modules to operate at low frequency. However, the staircase modulation is usually employed without giving its deserved attention. This paper presents a clear understanding of the staircase modulation strategy and its applications in both isolated and grid-connected ACMI.  The main novelty of this paper is the obtaining of the switching function for each module. The principle of operation is carefully described, also indicating how to command the ACMI transistors. The output voltage of the two superior modules is evaluated for different values of iterations. Special attention is given to the power distribution among the ACMI modules when the staircase modulation is applied. It is demonstrated on how the power is processed in each module considering an ACMI with three modules. The analysis is presented showing the staircase modulation within a closed-loop control strategy for isolated and grid-connected modes of operation, showing that the content of this paper is valid for both modes. This paper proposes a coupled inductor-based hybrid dc circuit breaker topology with zero current switching for fast fault interruption in dc systems. A series resonant circuit comprising of the secondary winding of a two-winding coupled inductor and a charged capacitor (commutation capacitor) is switched on during fault to inject a counter-current pulse, and, consequently, force a zero crossing of fault current. Proposed solution facilitates arcless breaking for a mechanical circuit breaker due to zero current turn-off. The proposed circuit breaker exhibits fast fault response ($\sim$ 30  $\mu$ s), and the response time is programmable based on the design of the coupled inductor and commutation capacitor. Furthermore, presented solution mitigates the requirement of energy-absorbing elements for demagnetizing the dc network following fault interruption, in contrast to conventional dc breakers. The paper also presents two modified circuit-breaker topologies to achieve unipolar voltage profile on the capacitor, which will enable the use of electrolytic capacitors for commutation so that the capacitor stack size is reduced in high-voltage applications. Detailed analysis and design equations are presented to explain the operation of the proposed topologies. This paper presents a dc–dc input-parallel output-parallel (IPOP) converter configuration for renewable energy integration with medium-voltage dc grids. A full-bridge zero-current-switching (FB-ZCS) converter with voltage-doubler output is proposed as the fundamental module. To achieve smooth current commutation and ZCS, the leakage inductance of transformer and a resonant capacitor across its secondary are utilized. This resonant capacitor is always charged to its full-rated capacity irrespective of converter loading and requires a dedicated charging interval resulting in duty-cycle loss. For a given leakage inductance, a large resonant capacitor is required for higher current ratings. With a single-centralized converter, these operational and design constraints result in significant duty-cycle loss, restricting the operation range. This paper proposes an IPOP configuration for high-power applications. Phase shedding at reduced loading ensures that individual modules are operated optimally. Input inductance requirement in modules is reduced due to interleaving of the input current. Additionally, voltage stress across converter components and input current ripple are reduced by 50% in the proposed converter modules. Steady-state operation, modeling, current-sharing control, start-up, and shutdown of modules in the IPOP configuration are demonstrated using simulations. Standard TRIAC-based dimmers introduce power quality issues especially for a large-scale lighting network. Other existing dimming protocols involve additional wiring systems and/or additional controllers to light emitting diode (LED) drivers. This paper proposes a central dimming system for a large penetration of LED lamps. The dimming system is remotely controlled through a webpage or a desktop application. Dimming is achieved while maintaining high voltage and current quality waveforms, which results in a high power factor and a low input current harmonic distortion. The system does not require additional wiring or specific adjustments to commercial dimmable LED drivers. The system allows scheduling a dimming profile to endorse energy saving. In the proposed dimming system, dimming function is achieved by connecting a voltage source converter (VSC) between the grid and the LED lamps. An advanced feature is added to the VSC dimmer to remotely send/receive messages between the system and the user through a graphical user interface. Thus, the user can communicate with the VSC dimmer by sending commands and receiving feedback information. The influence of communication delay on system stability is analyzed by using small signal models. A VSC dimmer prototype (500 VA/120 V) has been built with a communication module to provide remote control. To improve power density and motor performance, new bearingless motor topologies combine torque and magnetic suspension coils into a single winding. Of these topologies, the parallel dual-purpose no-voltage winding is advantageous from the bearingless drive perspective because it requires the least amount of hardware. However, this topology can result in undesirable current controller performance from cross-coupling effects between the suspension and torque operation. This paper investigates these cross-coupling effects using rotating reference frame theory to derive relevant system disturbance transfer functions. The nature of this coupling is explained in relation to the machine and control parameters (inductances, resistances, controller gains) to provide insights for bearingless machine and control designers. The paper proposes and simulates different compensation techniques to minimize or eliminate the cross-coupling. It is shown that with careful machine design or with proper feedback control compensation, the motor controller can be implemented as a conventional motor drive, without knowledge of the magnetic suspension system. This paper presents a neutral-point deviation and ripple compensating control method applied to a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) converter. The neutral-point deviation and its harmonic components are analyzed with a focus on the average current flowing through the neutral-point of the dc link. This paper also proposes a control scheme compensating for the neutral-point deviation and dominant harmonic components under generalized unbalanced grid operating conditions. The positive and negative sequence components of the switching functions and ac input currents are employed to accurately explain the behavior of three-level NPC converter. This paper presents a novel power flow control system for a remote military microgrid with hybrid energy storage. A combination of batteries and supercapacitors (SCs) is managed by the novel control system to increase the battery life by redirecting the higher frequency current that would have to flow in the battery if SCs were not present. This paper offers a practical solution to manage the SC current and ensure that the SCs are never overcharged or commanded to support the system when they are discharged to the lower operating limit chosen. The new controller allows the independent selection of the low-pass filter parameter and the number of SCs. By making the most out of these two degrees of freedom, we investigate different configurations, identifying the one achieving the highest cash flow for the overall system. Many applications that use high-energy plasma are realized using microwave tubes (MWT) that operate at peak power in the range of hundreds of MW and frequency in GHz. One failure mode of the MWT is due to the excess energy in the tube during internal arcing events. Crowbar is used to protect the MWT by diverting the energy during fault. To compute the energy released into the MWT, the dc fault current model and the MWT model are essential. An equivalent fuse wire model is utilized for the MWT for the crowbar applications. The paper proposes a model for the dc fault current, the analysis for which is based on Joules Integral energy concept. The model provides flexibility to choose a range of practically observed reactance to resistance ratio ($X{/}R$) of transformer and also allows the use of a range of dc current-limiting resistances that are utilized in the high-voltage (HV) power supply circuits in microwave applications. The nonlinearity of the system due to the multipulse diode rectifier is also considered by introducing a correction factor in the model. This paper shows that the same correction factor can be applied for both dc side parallel- and series-connected rectifier circuits. Both dc fault current and MWT models are verified experimentally. A high-frequency high voltage gain discontinuous conduction mode coupled-inductor boost LED driver based on planar component is presented in this paper. GaN switch is adopted with lower conducting resistance and higher switching speed. Zero voltage switching (ZVS) is achieved at the same time to reduce high switching loss caused by high switching frequency. Compared with the previous work, the voltage gain is higher and efficiency is higher because of ZVS. This paper focuses on high efficiency; therefore, resonant gate driver is adopted and efficiency is increased by 0.6%. In terms of the coupled-inductor, planar component is used and parameter optimization is also proposed to realize lower loss, including wingding loss and fringing loss caused by the air gap. A 500 kHz 36 W prototype has been designed to demonstrate theoretical analysis. In addition, comparison of drive loss between the resonant gate driver used in this paper and conventional driver implemented by Si8271 is made, revealing advantages of the resonant driver. This paper presents the outcomes of laboratory evaluation of the performance of a sample of LED lighting systems (lamp/driver and dimmer combinations) in presence of audio frequency injection control (AFIC) signals used by electricity distribution system network service providers (DNSPs) for control of certain loads. The testing presented in this study has been undertaken in response to a significant number of customer complaints that have been received by DNSPs related to the performance of LED lighting systems with dimmers incorporated. In a number of cases, performance issues have been verified in the field to occur during periods where AFIC signaling voltages are present in the electricity distribution network. In order to determine the contributing factors that AFIC signaling may have on the performance of the LED lighting system, a light-based flicker evaluation testing system has been developed to investigate LED lighting system performance under controlled conditions. One of the main objectives of the study was to use light-based flicker indices to identify the effect on different combinations of LED lamps/drivers and dimmers by varying the voltage magnitude and frequency of the AFIC signal as well as the position (i.e., voltage output) of the dimmer. Visual observations were also carried out to investigate the correlation between measured flicker indices and visually observed flicker. Integrated battery charging (IBC)—multiplexing the motor windings as line inductors for charging electric vehicle battery packs—can improve the onboard charging capability without increasing the weight and cost. However, during the charging operation, currents flowing in the stator winding definitely generate a magnetic field, which may demagnetize the permanent magnets (PMs) in the PM traction motors. In this paper, the demagnetization effects of IBC current on magnets in interior PM machines are compressively investigated. In this paper, a recursive algorithm to update the PM magnetization states by using a parallelogram hysteresis model at different demagnetization levels is applied. The PM temperature is also considered for establishing this model. By coupling this algorithm to the finite element analysis, the demagnetization transit at different demagnetization levels can be assessed. By decomposing the flux density of each node within the magnets along its magnetization direction, irreversible demagnetization can be accurately evaluated. This paper presents the design and implementation of a novel low-cost speed sensorless control technique for a permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance motor (PMa-SynRM). A robust adaptive speed (RAS) observer is designed for estimating the rotor speed and position, respectively. The RAS observer estimates the PMa-SynRM speed and position from the back electromotive force space-vector determination without voltage sensors by using the reference voltages issued from the current controllers instead of the actual ones. The novelty of the proposed RAS estimation technique is the adaptation of the feedback error of the actual values. Thus, the proposed observer structure promises a higher degree of robustness against PMa-SynRM parameter changes in the sensitivity analysis presented in this paper. The dynamic model and experimental realizations of the proposed control technique are introduced. A 6-kW PMa-SynRM drive test setup is constructed including a dSPACE 1104 board as the control heart of the proposed system. The hardware-in-the-loop Typhoon HIL 402 device is used to experimentally emulate the PMa-SynRM and the inverter connected to a dSPACE MicroLabBox. The proposed RAS observer robustness is evaluated using a HIL model and experimental results under different conditions.
