Partial discharge (PD) measurements under repetitive impulse voltages are critical for the qualification of inverter-fed motor insulation systems. Severe electromagnetic interference due to high frequency switching from power electronic devices can cause the traditional PD detection techniques of sinusoidal voltage unfeasible. This article presents the design of an Archimedes spiral antenna that can work effectively for PD detection under fast rise time repetitive impulse voltages. The antenna structure is optimized by a media superstrate with a high dielectric constant over the radiant surface. Through the optimized design, both the gains of the antenna in the 0.5–1.5 GHz frequency range and the signal-to-noise ratio for PD detection are increased substantially. Modeling and experimental results prove that the gain of the antenna can reach 2.5 dB in the frequency range of 500–900 MHz and become higher than 7.0 dB in the frequency range of 900–2.0 GHz, with a voltage standing–wave ratio smaller than 1.4. The improvements in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are indispensable to obtain the desired output signal of partial discharge (PD) under square wave pulsewidth modulation (PWM) voltage. In this article, the effect of complex PWM voltage parameters (rise time, fall time, frequency, duty cycle) on the SNR of PD tests is investigated. The results revealed that the sensor's high-frequency gain should be increased to improve the SNR under faster switching. PD impulses are more likely to be submerged in the residual interference under high-frequency voltage. The SNR can be improved by only detecting the PD at the rising front because the PD signal overlaps with commutation noise at the falling front of short duty cycle voltage, such as 0.03% duty cycle. Accurate and reliable machine performance degradation tracking and remaining useful life (RUL) prognosis establish the foundation for predictive maintenance scheduling toward improved safety and productivity of machine operations. In general, machine performance degradation exhibits a nonlinear and nonhomogeneous pattern that arises from time-varying degradation rate and abrupt performance changes. To address this challenge and improve the generalizability of degradation modeling, in this article, we present a stochastic modeling technique based on the Lévy process, which generalizes system variations as the accumulations of successive and jump increments. The developed Lévy process model consists of two terms: a linear Brownian motion term for capturing the gradual degradation with time-varying rates and a nonhomogenous compound Poisson process term for capturing transient performance changes. By calculating the moments of the characteristic function of the Lévy model, explicit expressions for the probability distributions of predicted performance degradation and RUL are derived. To obtain the time-varying parameters in the Lévy model, Markov chain Monte Carlo is investigated. The developed technique is evaluated through simulation and run-to-failure tests of roller and ball bearings, and the good performance of the developed Lévy model is confirmed. Direct modulation principle is widely used in modular multilevel converters (MMCs) for its simplicity and natural stability. However, it results in strong active and reactive power coupling. This paper carefully analyzes and identifies four power coupling paths and two power influence factors with the direct modulation principle. Full power decoupling of the MMC can be realized by cutting off the derived coupling paths and compensating the influence factors. However, this will further deteriorate the already poor damping of the MMC and significantly increase dc-bus current fluctuations. To solve this problem, the sources resulting in poor damping are identified and then a new closed-loop dc-bus current controller is incorporated into the control system. Finally, the proposed power decoupling strategy with the newly designed current controller realizes completely decoupled power regulation, avoids overload operation, and obviously improves the dynamic performance of the MMC. To improve the interception performance in missile guidance applications, this paper proposes a novel control strategy for the integrated guidance and control design subject to input constraints. The system constraints are translated into a restriction in an invariant set, which is then enforced by manipulating the derivative of the applied reference. For the integrated system in the presence of disturbances and parametric uncertainties, disturbance observers are applied to estimate the lumped disturbances existing in each loop. The quadratic stability via dynamic surface control is guaranteed, and an ellipsoidal approximation of the invariant set is obtained, which can be enlarged to allow some degree of the input saturation. Power allocation is a major concern in hybrid energy storage system. This paper proposes an extended droop control (EDC) strategy to achieve dynamic current sharing autonomously during sudden load change and resource variations. The proposed method consists of a virtual resistance droop controller and a virtual capacitance droop controller for energy storages with complementary characteristics, such as battery and supercapacitor (SC). By using this method, battery provides consistent power and SC only compensates high-frequency fluctuations without the involvement of conventionally used centralized controllers. To implement the proposed EDC method, a detailed design procedure is proposed to achieve the control objectives of stable operation, voltage regulation, and dynamic current sharing. System dynamic model and relevant impedances are derived and detailed frequency domain analysis is performed. Moreover, the system level stability analysis is investigated and system expansion with the proposed method is illustrated. Repetitive control strategies have been commonly applied in pulse-width-modulated (PWM) voltage source inverters (VSIs) for many industrial applications. This paper presents a repetitive controller for voltage harmonic mitigation of VSI-based islanded microgrids. The phase delay in the overall control system, e.g., the delay caused by the digital duty cycle calculation, PWM generation, and repetitive controller, has to be compensated by elaborately designed phase lead filters in order to prevent control performance deterioration and system instability. Nevertheless, quantificational analysis and practical design of the time advance unit in such filters are hardly found in existing literature works. In view of this, this paper proposes an explicit analysis of the phase lead filters and a novel design method of the time advance unit in repetitive controllers to ensure system stability. Moreover, with the help of the proposed method, the overall system stability margin is predictable and improved controller performance is achieved as well. This paper presents a distributed control scheme for reliable autonomous operation of a hybrid three-port ac/dc/distributed storage (ds) microgrid by means of power sharing in individual network, power exchange between ac and dc networks, and power management among three networks. The proposed distributed control scheme includes: 1) a fully decentralized control, which is achieved by local power sharing (LPS) in individual ac or dc network, global power sharing (GPS) throughout ac/dc networks, and storage power sharing (SPS) among distributed storages. Upon fully decentralized control, each power module can operate independently without communication links. This would benefit for riding through communication malfunction in multilayer supervision control system; 2) a multilevel power exchange control for scheduling LPS, GPS, and SPS has been developed to reduce unnecessary power exchange between ac/dc networks and operations of DS units with the benefit of reducing power exchange losses and prolonging storage lifetime. To address the reliability of rotating machine insulation, the International Electrotechnical Commission implemented new standards and technical specifications that are relevant to low-voltage and medium-voltage inverter-fed motors. Insulation evaluation under such power supply relies upon partial discharge (PD) measurements and accelerated life tests, which should be conducted (at least for the turn-to-turn insulation) under impulsive voltage waveform. The effect of impulsive voltage parameters on PD inception voltage and, in particular, endurance tests must be investigated to design test procedures that can indicate insulation quality and its behavior in service. This paper examines the effect of repetitive impulsive voltage waveform parameters on PD and the endurance (life) of organic insulation for rotating machine wires based on experiments performed on single-contact crossed pairs. Results show that the features of repetitive voltage impulse affect PD time and frequency characteristics, PD phase distribution, and endurance. Consequently, evaluation of insulation subjected to power electronics waveforms should take into account the appropriate choice of impulsive voltage parameter to fit to the type of PD phenomenology occurring in service conditions. DC microgrids are becoming popular in low-voltage distribution systems due to the better compatibility with photovoltaic panels, electric vehicles, and dc loads. This paper presents a practical dc microgrid developed in the Water and Energy Research Laboratory (WERL) in the Nanyang University of Technology, Singapore. The coordination control among multiple dc sources and energy storages is implemented using a novel hierarchical control technique. The bus voltage essentially acts as an indicator of supply–demand balance. A wireless control is implemented for the reliable operation of the grid. A reasonable compromise between the maximum power harvest and effective battery management is further enhanced using the coordination control based on a central energy management system. This paper proposes a novel dual-input matrix converter (DIMC) to integrate two three-phase ac type energy resources to a power grid. The proposed matrix converter is developed based on the traditional indirect matrix converter under reverse power flow operation mode, but with its six-switch voltage source converter replaced by a nine-switch configuration. With the additional three switches, the proposed DIMC can provide six input terminals, which make it possible to integrate two independent ac sources into a single grid-tied power electronics interface. The proposed converter has input-to-output voltage boost capability since power flows from the converter's voltage source side to its current source side. Commanded currents can be extracted from the two input sources to the grid. The proposed control and modulation schemes guarantee sinusoidal input and output waveforms as well as unity input power factors. This paper presents a novel matrix converter with one ac input and two ac outputs. The presented topology is based on the traditional indirect matrix converter, but with its rear-end six-switch inverter replaced by a compact nine-switch inverter. With only three extra switches added, the proposed converter can produce two sets of three-phase ac outputs, whose amplitudes, frequencies, and phases can appropriately be regulated. Features such as sinusoidal input and outputs, unity input power factor and minimum commutation count are all retained by the proposed topology, despite having an additional output. Its modulation is realized by the computationally less intensive carrier-based method, whose unique carrier requirements can easily be managed within a programmable logic device. The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is very attractive in a high-voltage dc (HVdc) transmission system due to its high modularity and scalability. It is also a promising candidate for medium-voltage applications. An MMC has many power devices that lead to a relatively low reliability based only on a direct failure rate calculation. The reliability of an MMC can be improved by redundant designs. Lots of redundant designs and strategies have been proposed in recent years, while their reliability improvements are hardly quantified in existing literature. In practice, reliability improvement with constraint costs is a challenge. In view of these, this paper proposes a reliability and cost assessment scheme for MMC redundant designs and strategies. Reliability and cost are quantified for comparison purposes. A medium-voltage application is used to demonstrate the reliability and cost assessment scheme. The reliability analysis is based on a combinatorial model and the Poisson process model. The cost analysis focuses on capital cost and power loss cost. This paper presents a uniform control strategy for the bidirectional ac/dc interlinking converter (BIC) in hierarchical controlled hybrid microgrid. The uniform control strategy unifies different control structures for multifunctional BIC in terms of power management, ac and dc voltage support. With the unified control structure, various triggering mechanisms for BIC mode-switch are not compulsory in response to the relevant scenario changes in the power network. Therefore, the negative consequences, such as unsmooth transition and system collapse due to the inaccurate or slower mode switch, can be avoided. Moreover, the uniform control strategy is also applicable for the hierarchical controlled hybrid microgrid, whose control architecture is typically comprised of the centralized and decentralized levels. This enables the communication fault ride-through capability and the impact from the communication failures can thus be mitigated. To sum up the above two features, the proposed control strategy is able to provide a smooth operation for the BIC without control mode switch in the event of unintentional scenario changes in power or communication network. The stability of dual active bridge converter (DAB) is threatened when feeding the constant power loads (CPLs). This article proposes a deep reinforcement learning-based backstepping control strategy to solve this problem. First, a nonlinear disturbance observer is adopted to estimate the large-signal nonlinear disturbance. Then, a backstepping controller is used to stabilize the voltage response of the DAB under the large-signal disturbance. Finally, a compensation method based on deep reinforcement learning is developed to intelligently minimize output voltage tracking error and improve the operating efficiency of the system. The proposed controller can guarantee system stability under the large-signal disturbance of the CPL and achieve a fast dynamic response with accurate voltage tracking; it is more adaptive by using the deep reinforcement learning technique through the learning of its neural networks. The nonlinear loads in distribution grid may generate harmful low-order harmonics, polluting the grid and deteriorating the voltage quality particularly when the grid is weak. The grid interfacing converters in the distribution system, such as the distributed generation (DG) interfacing converters or hybrid ac/dc grid interlinking converters, can participate in distribution grid harmonic control. In this paper, two virtual-impedance-based harmonics control methods are developed for grid interfacing voltage-source inverters (VSIs) to improve the power quality of the distribution grid. As the control parameters are designed based on the virtual impedance theory, clear physical meanings are given to explain their impacts on the system. Also, the proposed methods do not rely on the closed loop feedback control and, therefore, are very suitable for VSIs with low switching frequency (such as those for high-power DGs or interlinking converters for hybrid ac/dc systems), whose closed-loop control feedback bandwidth may be limited for harmonic regulation. The influence of system delay and feedback control loop is considered and modeled in the design procedure; thus more accurate virtual impedance control is achieved for low-switching-frequency VSIs. This study proposes an advanced current control strategy for three-phase grid-connected inverters to reject the impact of the dc offsets and scaling errors in the grid voltage measurement on the grid current performance. The proposed current controller designed in the synchronous (d-q) reference frame is developed with a proportional integral (PI) plus three vector PI controllers. The PI controller regulates the fundamental current to follow its reference, meanwhile, three vector PI controllers tuned at the fundamental grid frequency ( \omega _s), 2\omega _s, 6\omega _s are employed to eliminate the dc, unbalance, harmonic components in the grid current. As a result, the three-phase grid currents are controlled to be balanced, sinusoidal, and extremely low dc component despite the presence of the dc offset and scaling errors in the grid voltage measurement and distorted grid voltage conditions. The main advantage of the proposed control scheme is that it is developed without the need of additional hardware circuit, dc extraction, and harmonic detection scheme so that it can be integrated into the existing grid-connected inverter system without extra cost. Lithium batteries have the characteristics of high energy density and charge–discharge rate, but exhibit high chemical activity. State-of-charge (SOC) estimation is critical to the lithium battery electric vehicle (EV) operation safety. In this paper, a novel SOC estimation method is proposed based on Gaussian process regression. A mixture Gaussian process is used in this model to strengthen the reliability of data description and to increase the estimation accuracy. Optimal number of Gaussian processes is obtained by a revolutionary expectation maximum method. A nonlinear correlation feature selection method is introduced to improve the model efficiency. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by an EV field test. Compared with other data-based approaches, this method exhibits higher estimation accuracy and computational efficiency. In the electrical engineering field, there are two types of system which can potentially generate resonance under excitation, one is the electrical system with inductor and capacitor, the other is the mechanical system with spring-mass characteristic. A lot of research on active damping control algorithms for grid-connected inverters with LCL filter and inverter-driven machine with multirotating masses have been demonstrated. However, research works for these two systems were carried out independently and there is a lack of systematic comparison for modelling and control between these two systems. This article will unify the mathematical models and active damping control algorithms for these two systems. It is found that the mathematical models and control structures are fundamentally the same. The existing or future potential active damping control algorithms used in electrical system can be applied in mechanical system and vice versa to avoid reinventing the wheel. Parameter sensitivity analysis for controller and feedback gains was performed for electrical systems in the discrete z-domain. For mechanical systems, it is found that a substantial electromagnetic torque overshoot was introduced when applying the active damping control and it was analyzed quantitatively with various damping coefficients to guide the inverter design. This paper presents two linear power sharing schemes for distributed generators (DGs). The purpose is to reduce the total generation cost (TGC) of the considered autonomous microgrid. The saving in cost is realized by tuning the DG droop gradients in accordance to their respective maximum or mean generation costs. Compared with the existing nonlinear cost-based schemes, the proposed schemes use linear droop functions, which are easier to tune and implement in practice for a greater reduction in TGC. The proposed schemes have been tested experimentally with an example microgrid powered first by dispatchable DGs only, and then by a combination of dispatchable and nondispatchable DGs. Droop schemes have traditionally been applied to the control of parallel synchronous generators in power systems. It has subsequently been brought over to the control of distributed generators (DGs) in microgrids with the same retained objective of proportional power sharing based on ratings. This objective might, however, not suit microgrids well since DGs are usually of different types, unlike synchronous generators. Other factors like cost, efficiency, and emission penalty of each DG at different loading must be considered since they contribute directly to the total generation cost (TGC) of the microgrid. To reduce this TGC without relying on fast communication links, an autonomous droop scheme is proposed here, whose resulting power sharing is decided by the individual DG generation costs. A compact interlinking converter modular (ICM) for hybrid ac/dc microgrids with a distributed storage (DS) bus for storage integration is proposed in this article. The advanced ICM for hybrid ac/dc/ds microgrids involves the nine-switch topology with compact configuration and decreased number of active operating switches, which structurally equivalents to afford a dc interconnection port for dc subgrid, an ac interconnection port for ac subgrid, a ds interconnection port for ds subgrid, and two dc–dc converters for the interconnection ports for parallel DSs. In addition to the popular advantage of component elements saving, the suggested ICM, aggregating various interlinking converter cells (ICCs) into an ICM, is also proficient of participating computations from all ICC sensors to enhance the overall modular performance without building extra communication connection links between ICCs. With this in mind, a decentralized power management control strategy is realized by employing a coordination power control methodology to systematically handle various distributed generations (DGs), DSs, and ICM in a decentralized manner with improved communication fault ride-through capability. This paper proposes a multiple-input versatile matrix converter (VMC) for integrating hybrid ac/dc energy resources and storages to the power grid. The VMC is developed from the traditional indirect matrix converter but operates in the reverse-boost mode rather than in the forward-buck mode. The reverse-boost mode is more relevant here since most renewable sources and energy storages have lower voltages than the grid. The eventual VMC developed uses an alternative nine-switch converter, rather than usual six-switch voltage-source converter, for providing six input terminals in total. One three-phase ac source and three dc sources, or other source combinations, can therefore be connected to the VMC. Powers from these sources are channeled to the three-phase utility grid through the VMC's current-source inverter. Their proper dispatches are guaranteed by the proposed control and modulation schemes, which also help maintain near-sinusoidal input and output current waveforms. This paper concentrates on the design, control, and implementation of an LCL-filter-based shunt active power filter (SAPF), which can effectively compensate for harmonic currents produced by nonlinear loads in a three-phase three-wire power system. With an LCL filter added at its output, the proposed SAPF offers superior switching harmonic suppression using much reduced passive filtering elements. Its output currents thus have high slew rate for tracking the targeted reference closely. Smaller inductance of the LCL filter also means smaller harmonic voltage drop across the passive output filter, which in turn minimizes the possibility of overmodulation, particularly for cases where high modulation index is desired. These advantages, together with overall system stability, are guaranteed only through proper consideration of critical design and control issues, like the selection of LCL parameters, interactions between resonance damping and harmonic compensation, bandwidth design of the closed-loop system, and active damping implementation with fewer current sensors. The hybrid fuel cell/supercapacitor (FC/SC) system is a promising onboard power supply system for more electric aircraft (MEA), where system stability is a critical issue due to the high penetration of constant power loads (CPLs) in MEA. This article proposes a composite finite-time controller for decentralized power sharing and stabilization of the hybrid FC/SC system with CPLs. It consists of an integral droop (ID) + finite-time controller for the SC converter and a proportional droop (PD) + finite-time controller for the FC converter. First, the coordination of PD and ID achieves decentralized power sharing between FC and SC such that SC only compensates fast fluctuations and FC provides smooth power at the steady state. Then, a finite-time observer is designed to provide feedforward compensation for the disturbances and enables accurate tracking with fast dynamics. Finally, a composite finite-time controller is constructed following a nonrecursive synthesis procedure with a rigorous large signal stability analysis. The proposed controller guarantees finite-time convergence even under large signal variations and can be easily implemented with a practical gain tuning procedure. The interleave boost converter (IBC) has been used as the interface converter between the low-voltage electrical energy sources, such as lithium-ion battery banks, solar panels, and fuel cells, and the dc bus of dc microgrids. With increasing penetration of tightly regulated power electronic loads, which behave as constant power loads, the stability of microgrid dc-bus voltage that is fed by the IBC is threatened by the loads’ negative incremental impedance feature. To ensure the stability of the bus voltage, this article proposes a nonlinear disturbance observer (NDO)-based sliding-mode control algorithm. The proposed algorithm has excellent robustness, low computational burden, and no extra hardware cost. A generalized average state-space model is proposed to facilitate the control design. Different from single-bus dc microgrids (MGs), a multibus MG normally bridge multiple dc buses via a complex line impedance network. This intricate configuration together with tickling constant power loads may cause severe stability issues. For system stability improvement, conventional ways include designing small-signal stabilizers in a decentralized way and constructing large-signal stabilizers by solving Lyapunov equation in a central controller. Note that centralized methods may be vulnerable to single point of failures, while decentralized patterns are commended to reinforce MG reliability and scalability. To implement large-signal stabilization in decentralized mechanisms, which has rarely been investigated in the existing literature, a novel uniform nonsmooth control scheme (UNCS) is proposed, in this article. UNCS has the following fourfold advantages. First, UNCS helps to express commonly used dc/dc converters, boost, buck, and buck–boost, into a uniform model. The model substantially facilitates a uniform stabilizer design that accommodates the preceding three converters despite their differences in topology. Second, UNCS assigns each converter based distributed generator (DG) with a composite large-signal stabilizer comprising a nonsmooth observer and a nonsmooth controller. The controller neutralizes the disturbances estimated by the observer, and it also rigorously stabilizes the internal states in DG uniform model. Third, the stabilizer also provides an additional control degree of freedom, a finetuning factor, to refine DG dynamic responses to meet high requirements for voltage and power qualities. Fourth, when numerous DGs with the proposed stabilizer congregate to build a multibus MG, the overall system large-signal stabilization is autonomously attained without communication links, which is mathematically justified by Lyapunov stability analyses. As such, DGs are allowed to randomly plug in/out without worrying about impairing system level stability. Simulations help to properly select relevant key parameters. High penetration of renewable energies through fast-response power converters results in a considerable displacement of conventional synchronous generators and losing of system inertia for frequency control. Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) can be employed serving as an interface between the large-scale renewable generation and power grids. In a microgrid with high shares of renewables integrating through MMCs, submodule (SM) capacitors can be used as energy storage to provide a degree of synthetic inertia for system frequency support. This paper quantitatively exploits the MMC synthetic inertia in a microgrid with flexible renewable penetration levels. An MMC inertia coefficient concept is proposed. It is mainly affected by the penetration ratio, the SM capacitance, and the modulation index of an MMC, with the system operation constraints. According to the analysis, a substantial portion of system inertia can be provided by properly designed MMCs. Detailed MMC frequency control loops are presented. The capacitor average voltage is proportionally linked to the frequency deviation, in order to flexibly adjust the capacitor energy during frequency events. The MMC output active power is deliberately and simultaneously regulated according to the capacitor energy change rate. By controlling the MMC capacitor voltage, dc side power, and output active power, an amount of energy can be released or absorbed by SM capacitors to improve the system frequency response during the frequency event transients, while the renewable generation is scarcely influenced. The proposed concept is experimentally verified and the results show that, with proper system parameters and control loops, the line frequency deviation and the rate of change of frequency can be significantly reduced. Photovoltaic (PV) generators have continuously increased in recent years, whose power is usually controlled through the perturbation and observation (P&O) method. In essence, the P&O method is nonlinear and discontinuous. Hence, the conventional small-signal stability analysis is not suitable anymore when the influence of the P&O-based power control is considered. Focusing on this problem, this paper adopts the nonlinear describing function (DF) method to conduct the accurate stability analysis of PV generators with consideration of P&O-based power control. The detailed procedures about the DF method are introduced, and then the related influence factors like perturbation size, filters, and so on are analyzed quantitatively. Furthermore, the comparison with the conventional stability analysis methods is made, which suggests that the DF method can effectively enhance the accuracy of the stability analysis. The digital control system of modular multilevel converters (MMCs) normally synchronizes with the switching actions. The switching frequency of an MMC is generally selected as low as possible from an efficiency point of view, which leads to an unavoidable and relatively long time delay in the control system. Such a time delay might deteriorate the MMC performance and even reduce the stability margin by introducing infinite uncertain eigenvalues into the system state functions. Without a proper time-delay model and quantitative system stability analyses, MMCs might suffer from uncertainties and unstable risks during their operations, especially when the switching frequency is low. This paper derives an MMC model considering the time delay in the digital control system. A Padé-based stability analysis method is then proposed, which consists of three steps: information integration and critical eigenvalue extraction, and trajectory visualization and critical angle (CA) calculation, and quantitative assessment and extreme value determination. By the proposed model and method, the critical eigenvalue can be effectively extracted. With the Hopf bifurcation, the time delay in the digital control system induces a pair critical conjugate eigenvalues into MMC systems, which is detected as an instability cause. The CA and the critical impact are defined to quantitatively assess the stability, while selecting the controller parameters and minimum switching frequency. CLLC-type dc transformer (CLLC-DCT) is very popular in the hybrid ac–dc microgrid thanks to its high-power density advantage and good bidirectional power transfer capacity. In the hybrid ac/dc microgrid, the open-loop control is always utilized by the CLLC-DCT to cooperate with the bidirectional interlinking converter to realize the power and voltage conversion between the ac and dc bus. This paper first studies the circuit parameters design of the open-loop controlled CLLC-DCT with consideration of such a realistic problem: The real inductors/capacitors values are actually different with their theoretically designed values due to the operation power and temperature variation. To solve this problem, a robust circuit parameters design scheme is proposed for the CLLC-DCT in this paper. With the proposed scheme, the designed CLLC-DCT exhibits good power transmission and voltage regulation ability in the hybrid ac/dc microgrid even when its actual inductors/capacitors values vary with the practical power and temperature. A novel high-efficiency resonant light emitting diode (LED) backlight driver with passive current balancing and dimming is proposed and analyzed in this paper. The proposed LED driver achieves uniform brightness of each LED string by the charge balance of the resonant capacitor, which benefits from high efficiency. By controlling the output current of one LED string, the output currents of other LED strings can be controlled via current balancing of resonant capacitors, which makes its control simple. The proposed LED driver uses only one active switch, which decreases circuit volume and simplifies the control. Furthermore, a wide load range can be achieved by controlling the turn-on duty ratio of the single power switch of the LED driver with a fixed frequency. A high-performance three-phase pulse width modulation (PWM) converter with reduced dc-link capacitor under unbalanced ac voltage conditions is proposed in this paper. The unique feature of the converter lies in that sinusoidal symmetrical ac currents and ripple free dc voltage can be achieved simultaneously without using a bulky capacitor, which was thought to be a dilemma in the past. The control scheme is implemented in an α–β frame, so the complex rotate transformations are avoided, and it does not require the extraction of positive and negative sequence currents, which simplifies the control algorithm. A two-quadrant operation active power compensator together with its controller is developed to suppress the voltage ripple in the dc-link. Compared with the passive compensation method, the compensator is equipped with a smaller capacitor to reduce the system size, weight, and cost. Moreover, the compensator could be integrated with the conventional three-phase three-leg PWM converter seamlessly. This paper proposes a modified one cycle control (OCC) for active power filter (APF) to compensate only harmonic components of load currents. The conventional OCC-based APF cannot differentiate between the harmonic and reactive components of load currents, which leads to the increment in device current rating because of compensation of large reactive currents besides harmonics. The reference signals of the OCC control core have been reconstructed and the associated control equations have been developed, following the control philosophy of simplicity. The modified scheme is easy to implement and only three more sensors are required for measuring load currents compared with the conventional OCC. This modified OCC guarantees the excellent performance of harmonic compensation alone and retains the advantages of the conventional OCC, such as no phase locking loop and the constant switching frequency. For hybrid energy storage system in dc microgrid, effective power split, bus voltage deviation, and state-of-charge (SoC) violation are significant issues. Conventionally, they are achieved by centralized control or hierarchical control methods with communications. This paper proposes a simple and effective strategy to solve the problem in a decentralized manner. A high-pass filter-based droop (HPFD) controller is proposed to regulate the battery converter, and a virtual capacitance droop (VCD) controller is implemented for a supercapacitor (SC) converter. The cooperation of HPFD and VCD first achieves autonomous power split that high-frequency fluctuation is buffered by SC and low-frequency power is supplied by battery. Meanwhile, the bus voltage deviation induced by the droop-based power sharing is eliminated automatically at steady state. The resulted bus voltage restoration simultaneously enforces SC SoC back to its nominal value, and, thus, ensures continuous operation of SC as a power buffer without the violation of its SoC boundary. A design guideline is developed to ensure expected system dynamics. The effectiveness of the proposed method and analytical results are validated by simulations and experiments.
