This paper proposes a quadrature-shaped pickup coil, which can realize an angular-misalignment insensitive omnidirectional wireless charging system. Recently, the three-dimensional wireless charging has shown promising prospects for removing the performance deterioration caused by the positional misalignment, which can transfer power to arbitrary spatial objectives. In the conventional design, the strength and the direction of the induced magnetic field can be adjusted by controlling the excitation currents of transmitting coils. However, the existence of angular misalignment caused by the self-rotation of the pickup unit still can result in a sharp decrease of the transmitted power. Accordingly, this paper proposes and implements a novel pickup coil topology to compensate such huge fluctuations in power transfer, which aims to ensure an angular misalignment insensitive omnidirectional wireless charging. Cascaded H-bridge converter (CHB) is a multilevel topology that is a well-suited solution for multiple applications such as flexible ac transmission systems or motor drives. This paper is focused on a CHB where the cells present an aging mismatch. This can be caused by the maintenance operation which forces the replacement of some damaged cells of the converter with new or repaired ones. In this paper, a new improved approach of the active thermal control (ATC) of the CHB using discontinuous pulsewidth modulation (PWM) (D-PWM) is presented. The D-PWM technique is used to reduce the power losses of one cell reducing its average temperature in order to increase its remaining lifetime. However, the combination of D-PWM with traditional phase-shifted PWM (PS-PWM) introduces high harmonic distortion in the output voltage of the CHB converter at twice the carrier frequency. A detailed harmonic distortion analysis of the CHB output voltage when the D-PWM based ATC is active is presented. From this analysis, a modification of the traditional PS-PWM is derived to eliminate the harmonic distortion at twice the carrier frequency. This paper proposes a family of single-stage converters consisting of three different converters, each of which is able to produce a variety of waveforms through the waveform-subtraction technique. We brand this converter family as waveform-subtraction based single-stage converter (WSSC). By using only a single-stage converter, the proposed waveform generation technique is able to realize dc–dc–ac conversions and suppress input current ripple, meeting the needs of modernized power grid with renewable energy sources. At the same time, converters in this WSSC family are capable of generating a range of shapes, such as triangular, rectangular, and sawtooth waveforms, with simple structures, demonstrating its suitability of being applied in the electrochemical industry, e.g., in the electroplating process. Furthermore, the proposed family converters also realize substantially better input current ripple suppression compared to other conventional converters. In order to prove the validity and efficacy of the proposed WSSC and the theory underpinning it, in this paper, extensive simulations and analyses are conducted to verify the theoretical foundation of the proposed WSSC strategy, and the prototype of a converter from the proposed converter family is built and tested in our laboratory, which validates the functionality of the WSSC. In order to suppress the torque ripple of an open-end winding permanent-magnet synchronous machine (OEW-PMSM), a q-axis current injection method is typically employed but the disturbances caused by the third flux linkage parameter mismatch can augment the torque ripple. To solve this problem, in this paper, first, a zero-sequence current (ZSC) and zero-sequence back-EMF observer (ZCBO) are proposed based on an adaptive sliding mode control, which is able to simultaneously estimate ZSC and zero-sequence back EMF under varying conditions. Based on this ZCBO, the estimated ZSC and zero-sequence back EMF could compensate for the one-step control delay and suppress the aforementioned disturbances. Second, although central hexagon modulation is employed in the predictive current control (PCC) scheme, zero-sequence voltage (ZSV) still exists in the zero-sequence path due to the dead time of the inverter, affecting the predictive accuracy of the ZCBO. To accurately establish the ZCBO, the ZSV caused by the dead time of the inverter is considered in the ZCBO. Finally, a comparative study of two types of methods is presented, and simulations established by MATLAB software and experimental confirmations are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed PCC scheme in this paper. This paper proposes a sensorless vibration harmonic frequency estimation for a servo system driven by a permanent magnet (PM) synchronous machine. Traditional vibration harmonic estimation relies on the measurement using external sensors. An accelerometer is typically installed in the servo system to measure the vibration harmonic signal. Because the accelerometer must be attached on the visibly vibrational location inside the system, this vibration detection results in both issues about installation and reliability. To overcome this drawback, this paper proposes a disturbance observer to estimate the vibration harmonic by using current and position signal. A real-time signal process is developed to identify the vibration frequency from estimated harmonic. A servo system with a 400-W PM machine is built to verify the proposed vibration harmonic and frequency estimation. With the proliferation of distributed generation in distribution networks, quickly and smoothly converting to a state of regional autonomy in the case of distribution network failure is one of the main challenges for the stable operation of a multimicrogrid (MMG). To address the aforementioned problem, this paper proposes coordinated control of the passive transition from grid-connected to islanded operation for a three/single-phase hybrid MMG. Under the premise of fully considering the constraints on the tie-line transfer power undertaken by the master power supply (MPS), the following two scenarios regarding safety and emergency are formulated: 1) when the output power of the MPS is in the safe range, the proposed strategy coordinates the energy storage (ES) in each submicrogrid (SMG) to achieve power balance; 2) when the output power is in the emergency range, this paper proposes a three-phase balance method based on a bubble sort to realize the combination optimization of the single-phase source-load-storage (SLS) and a fast power regulation method based on implicit enumeration for the SLS to reduce the tie-line transfer power, which could prevent failure of the mode transition from power overload. Mass imbalance frequently exists in a rotating machine. It may induce unbalance force, causing undesirable vibrations and noise. Active magnetic bearing (AMB) has been found to be a good device to deal with such problem. This paper is concerned with the unbalance compensation for a three-pole AMB system. An adaptive compensation scheme is proposed based on the theory of immersion and invariance (I&I) control. It is to immerse a higher-order system into a lower-order target system. The lower-order target system in this paper is the three-pole AMB system with known mass imbalance and with a stabilizing integral sliding mode controller (ISMC). On the other hand, the higher-order system is the three-pole AMB system with both the ISMC levitation controller and the adaptive compensator. The adaptive compensator is designed to deal with the case that the mass imbalance may be unknown and may be changing during operation in practical applications. It estimates the information of mass imbalance online and is incorporated into the ISMC so that the unbalance force can be eliminated. Energy efficiency is a critical issue in the management of data centers, which form the backbone of cloud computing. Virtual resource management has a significant impact on improving the energy efficiency of data centers. Despite the progress in this area, virtual resource management has been considered mainly at two separate levels: application assignment and virtual machine placement. It has not been well-investigated in a unified framework for both levels, limiting further improvement in the energy efficiency of data centers. To address this issue, this paper proposes the virtual resource management problem for energy efficiency as a constrained optimization problem. Then, this paper simplifies the problem through profile-guided task classification and problem decomposition for complexity reduction and improved energy efficiency. After that, a three-phase framework and algorithms are presented for profiling and profile updating, task classification and application assignment, and successive virtual machine placement. Disturbance observer (DOB) has been one of the most widely used robust control tools since it was proposed by Ohnishi in 1983. This paper introduces the origins of DOB and presents a survey of the major results on DOB-based robust control in the last 35 years. Furthermore, it explains DOB's analysis and synthesis techniques for linear and nonlinear systems by using a unified framework. In this paper, the noncooperative optimal control problem is investigated for a class of discrete time-varying networked control systems subject to exogenous nonlinear disturbances. To relive the transmission burden in the sensor-to-controller channel, the Round-Robin protocol is adopted to schedule the sensor transmissions. On the other hand, the controller operates in an event-triggered manner so as to reduce the transmission frequency and thereby preserving the energy in the controller-to-actuator channel. In the presence of the underlying scheduling and triggering mechanism, it is literally impossible to acquire the accurate value of the individual cost function for each controller and, as an effective alternative, a certain upper bound is derived on the individual cost function. Then, in virtue of the completing-the-square technique and the Moore–Penrose pseudo inverse, such an upper bound is minimized at each time instant. Furthermore, a sufficient condition is established to guarantee the boundedness of the derived upper bound over the infinite horizon. The increasing complexity of distributed real-time control systems in the vehicular area has led to the development of new protocols, such as controller area network with a flexible data rate (CAN-FD), that provides high-bandwidth communication with FD rate. Different topologies are used to interconnect electronic control units in safety-critical applications in the automotive area and the applied communication protocols, such as CAN-FD, must comply with reliability requirements. Moreover, the functional operations must be tested to their limits, since they require appropriate assessment techniques for different application scenarios. Recent research has highlighted that power switching systems cause transient faults that affect the communication network. In light of this concern, this paper explores the IEC/TS 62228:2007 and ISO 26262-3/4/9:2018 standards that can act as guidelines for the development of a test method and testing board for evaluating the impact of electrical fast transients on the performance of a distributed automotive control system. Metrics such as difference jitter, average jitter, and packet loss, are used to determine the fault impact on the control law of a critical vehicular control system. The experiments that were conducted show that during the four test scenarios in which the testing board was used, the average jitter increased from 10.41 to 29.05% in the worst case scenario. These results highlight the importance of carrying out consistent tests to prevent critical situations and that these data can be used in software requirements specification phases to improve reliability in vehicular control systems. The development of wide band-gap semiconductor devices is rapidly promoting the development of power electronics technology, especially in high frequency (HF) power converter region. A category of HF power converter is switch-mode power amplifier (PA). This paper focuses on the implementation of a multiphase dc–dc PA with high bandwidth and high power rate. When naturally sampled phase-shifted carrier modulation is implemented in the practical digital control system to control this HF power converter, the pulsewidth error problem caused by limited domain frequency of control chip becomes much severer. As a result, dc voltage component of each phase becomes different under several conditions, leading to current imbalance among phase inductors. This paper analyzes this problem and proposes a sensorless control method to solve it, based on the injection of random sequence in reference wave. A four-phase prototype employing GaN devices is fabricated, switching at 1 MHz. Current imbalance and effectiveness of the proposed control method are verified by experimental results. The prototype is capable of uniformly amplifying sine signal within 200 kHz and a 350 kHz bandwidth random signal, with peak output power up to 810 W. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, quarter-turn planar transformer structure is proposed and implemented in an LLC resonant converter for server power supply applications. Main power losses of high-frequency resonant converters are secondary-side winding loss and transformer core loss. Conventional transformer winding structures limit the minimum number of turns on the primary and secondary sides, such that the core size and secondary-side conduction loss cannot be reduced by increasing the frequency. To achieve high efficiency and high power density, a fractional-turn transformer structure can reduce core volume and conduction loss in the windings. The optimized transformer design also enables the turn ratio of the fractional-turn to achieve normal coupling of primary and secondary sides without generating flux imbalance. The effects of different fractional-turn windings on efficiency are examined, and Maxwell simulation results are used to verify the structure and operation of the planar transformer. The printed circuit board layout is analyzed using Q3D Extractor to reduce the uneven current generated by parasitic components on the secondary-side windings. Wide-bandgap switches are utilized to implement a resonant converter with 1-MHz operating frequency, 380-V input voltage, 12-V output voltage, 1-kW output power, 37.6-W/cm3 power density, and 97% maximum efficiency. This paper presents an optimization method for selective harmonic elimination in a cascaded multilevel inverter using teaching–learning-based optimization (TLBO). The main objective in selective harmonic elimination (SHE) strategy is to eliminate low-order harmonics by solving nonlinear equations and reaching optimal solution, while the fundamental component is satisfied. In this paper, in one side, the influence of optimal dc sources is investigated to reach the SHE goal, and in another side, comparing optimization methods is considered. In this paper, the TLBO as a recently emerged nature-inspired algorithm is presented to provide better results for the SHE in comparison with genetic algorithm, artificial bee colony, imperialistic competitive algorithm, harmony search, ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization, and differential evolution. For better comparison of those methods and influence of optimal dc sources, 5-, 9-, and 15-level inverters are chosen and MATLAB software is used for optimization. Simulation results show the superiority of TLBO, higher precision and probability of convergence than other mentioned algorithms. Finally, to validate the influence of optimal dc sources and the accuracy of TLBO results, the experimental setup is conducted for a 5-level cascaded H-bridge inverter with optimal dc sources. This paper describes the tuning process of the proportional-resonant controller, taking into account the significant computational delay from the digital control system. Different structures of the controller and related contradicting results are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the stability domain and its dependence on different parameters of the proportional-resonant controller. The main outcome of this paper consists in the tuning approach guidelines for selection of controller parameters in case of significant digital system delay. In this paper, the design methodology of switched-tank converter (STC) is presented. The power loss breakdown analysis is conducted to point out the directions and paths for components optimization. It is revealed that the switching device conduction loss, printed circuit board (PCB) loss, and inductor loss become significant when output power is >150 W. Power loss of four switches is calculated and compared for switching device selection. The resonant capacitor is carefully designed to meet both current stress and ripple requirements. On the other hand, optimal design of the resonant inductors and PCB layout are fully investigated. The core loss model is provided, and different core materials are compared to minimize the core loss. Besides, a fine-tuned inductor winding structure is designed to achieve the lowest winding loss. Furthermore, PCB layout is optimized to get short loop length for each operation state. In addition to the hardware level optimization, an improved control method is proposed, in which the conduction time of switching devices is tuned to mitigate the circulating power. To verify the optimization work, a prototype of STC is built and tested. This paper presents a novel motion planning and tracking framework for automated vehicles based on artificial potential field (APF) elaborated resistance approach. Motion planning is one of the key parts of autonomous driving, which plans a sequence of movement states to help vehicles drive safely, comfortably, economically, human-like, etc. In this paper, the APF method is used to assign different potential functions to different obstacles and road boundaries; while the drivable area is meshed and assigned resistance values in each edge based on the potential functions. A local current comparison method is employed to find a collision-free path. As opposed to a path, the vehicle motion or trajectory should be planned spatiotemporally. Therefore, the entire planning process is divided into two spaces, namely the virtual and actual. In the virtual space, the vehicle trajectory is predicted and executed step by step over a short horizon with the current vehicle speed. Then, the predicted trajectory is evaluated to decide if the speed should be kept or changed. Finally, it will be sent to the actual space, where an experimentally validated Carsim model controlled by a model predictive controller is used to track the planned trajectory. Active magnetic bearing is a core technology for high-speed rotational machines. Power electronics converter as the active magnetic bearing drive is the actuation unit and its topology highly impacts the performance of the bearing system. This paper introduces the progress of topology of active magnetic bearing drive. The initial topology of an H-bridge does not sufficiently utilize the power electronics devices. The topology with half-bridge and shared phase-leg has been proposed as the fundamental topology. In this paper, two approaches of novel magnetic bearing drive topology modification have been developed on the basis of the fundamental topology. In the first approach, central phase-leg for multiaxis magnetic bearing drive can be further shared and the power electronic devices can be globally optimized in the whole system. Further, a topology with current in the reverse direction can reduce the central phase-leg current rating and power losses. In the second approach, fault-tolerant magnetic bearing drive topology has been developed on the basis of the fundamental topology, too. It can ride-through the open-circuit fault of power electronics switch-in operation and keep levitation for the magnetic bearing. This paper presents the development of a Class-D full-bridge zero-voltage switching (ZVS) inverter, applicable to wireless power transfer (WPT) systems, operating at 13.56 MHz switching frequency with dynamic dead-time control (DDTC). Resonant-coupled WPT systems are being designed at ultrahigh switching frequencies to reduce the size of the wireless link and the passive components. Maintaining ZVS while controlling the output power delivered to a fixed or variable load is one of the major challenges of designing inverters at multi-MHz switching frequencies. DDTC is the approach deployed in this paper to sustain soft switching of a Class-D full-bridge inverter over the full range of output power while regulating the input dc bus voltage. Simulation results are presented to show that dynamically controlling the dead-time during input dc bus voltage variations reduces switch-node voltage overshoot, prevents large current spikes in the switching devices, and reduces associated high switching loss. Practical results obtained show that DDTC reduces switch-node voltage overshoot, increases the inverter efficiency, and reduces the steady-state temperature of the inverter during output power regulation. Simulation involving interaction with deformable objects often causes stability problems because a slowly updated force generates additional energy to the human user. This paper proposes a stable and transparent haptic rendering for simulation involving interaction between a rigid tool and deformable objects. This method computes visual and haptic feedback in the simulation and haptic feedback loops, respectively. A local stiffness matrix consisting of points around contact points is constructed based on collision detection between a virtual tool and a deformable object in the simulation loop. The haptic feedback is then computed at a higher update rate in the haptic feedback loop using the local stiffness matrix. Equivalent springs computed by using the equivalent stiffness energy are added to the boundary of the local stiffness matrix to minimize errors in the rendered force. The proposed method is compared with the virtual coupling widely used in simulation involving interaction with deformable objects. The proposed method reduces the x-, y-, and z-axis maximum force errors by up to 52%, 80%, and 70%, respectively, compared to the virtual coupling in the simulation involving interaction with the Stanford bunny object consisting of 2087 points and 9997 tetrahedrons. Supercapacitors are receiving significant interest in wireless sensor network applications due to their high power density and longer lifespan. In such applications, consideration of the leakage effect is crucial for online control and management of supercapacitors. Motivated by this fact, in this paper we propose an online scheme to estimate the state-of-charge (SOC) of supercapacitors, taking the leakage effect into account. First, we propose a completely observable equivalent circuit model (ECM) of a supercapacitor, which captures the leakage effect. Then, we design an unscented-Kalman-filter-based SOC estimator on the proposed ECM. To illustrate the proposed scheme, we consider a commercially available 5 F supercapacitor (Maxwell BCAP0005) and conduct experimental studies to identify the ECM parameters. We also perform simulation and experimental studies to test the effectiveness of the proposed estimation scheme, in this paper. Steel-reinforced concrete has been widely used in the construction of railways because of its robustness and low maintenance cost. This paper focuses on the analysis of unwanted losses in a reinforced concrete track when a high-power online wireless power transfer system is installed on it. Induced dielectric loss in the concrete, and eddy current and hysteresis losses in the reinforcing steel bar are calculated using analytic equations and finite-element analysis. Among the three sources of loss, a dominant one is identified in the first three sections of this paper. It is shown that the dielectric loss in the concrete and the hysteresis loss in the reinforcing bar do not have a critical impact on the efficiency. However, it is found that the eddy current loss of the reinforcing bar is dominant over the other two losses. Furthermore, the eddy current loss of the reinforcing bar overwhelmed the ohmic loss of a transmitter coil if the transmitter coil is not located in a proper position on the concrete track. The theoretical results are evaluated experimentally using a 7-m-long test bed. When the transmitter coil is located 0.14 m above the reinforcing bar, the measured eddy current loss of the steel bar is 3 kW while the Ohmic loss of the transmitter coil is 1.5 kW. As the distance between the transmitter coil and the steel bar increases, the eddy current loss of the bar decreases rapidly. From the simulation and the experimental evaluation of the loss, guidelines for installing a transmitter coil on a reinforcing bar for an in-motion wireless power transfer system are suggested in this paper. In this paper, a new modular and active snubber cell, easily applicable, and attractive for converters, especially have many switches proposed. This snubber cell is implemented on the single phase of a grid-connected three-phase T-type three-level inverter (T-3LI). In this new converter, the main switches turn-on under zero-voltage transition and turn-off under zero-voltage switching (ZVS). Also, auxiliary switches turn-on under zero-current switching and turn-off under ZVS. All snubber diodes operate under soft switching (SS). There are no additional current and voltage stresses on the main switches. During an SS operation, the switching energies are transferred to a dc voltage source. Then, these energies are processed to input with an independent dc–dc converter. Thus, all switching energies are recycled. Compared with the conventional two-level dual-active-bridge (DAB) dc–dc converter, the three-level DAB converter could operate with lower voltage rated switching devices and provide more control degrees of freedom, which enhances the control flexibility. This paper proposes a modulation strategy with five control degrees of freedom. In the previous work with multiple control degrees, the optimization strategies for efficiency or inductor current minimization are investigated; however, these strategies all need detailed mode analysis and complex mathematical optimization tools to obtain the optimal duty cycles. In this paper, an optimization strategy for the root-mean-square value of the inductor current is proposed. This method extracts the fundamental and third-harmonic components from the high-frequency voltages on both sides and adjusts the amplitude of the bridge voltages by the vector diagram to obtain the optimal duty cycles. The inductor current can be reduced significantly at light loads with the proposed strategy, so the efficiency of the converter can be improved. Moreover, the optimization process does not need the detailed operation analysis of the converter, nor does it require the complex mathematical optimization tools. The key function of rotating machine condition monitoring (CM) is to detect structural changes during machine operations. This paper presents a novel statistical time-frequency analysis method for this purpose. In particular, frequency spectrum is extracted from the machine condition signals based on periodogram estimation. Undirected weighted graph is then constructed from the resulting periodograms, where the so-called median graph is introduced and adopted to describe the normal machine status. Statistical analysis is performed to investigate newly observed data with respect to the median graph for change decision making. The proposed method has been applied to three different engineering applications to evaluate its effectiveness: load CM; early bearing failure detection; and speed CM. The results were compared with some benchmark methods reported in the literature, where significant improvements of the proposed method were demonstrated, indicating its good potentials in engineering applications. This paper proposes a mutual calibration strategy for multiple current sensors in an electric vehicle motor drive. The motor drive usually consists of three current sensors, i.e., a dc-bus current sensor and two phase current sensors. Due to the aging effect and harsh operating environment, the accuracy uncertainty issue is inevitable in these crucial sensors, which results in poor driving performance. In this paper, the detection voltage injection (DV-Injection) method is proposed for mutual calibration of the aforementioned current sensors. Two opposite basic vectors are set together to detect and eliminate the offset error of the dc-bus current sensor. Then, both the directly measured phase-current values by the phase-current sensors and the indirectly measured values by the dc-bus current sensor are sampled. These values are utilized for mutual calibration of the phase-current sensor offset errors and scaling error differences among all the current sensors. Meanwhile, the DV-Injection process is only applied in the period of calibration process, whereas in the remaining intervals the space vector pulsewidth modulation technology is utilized. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified by simulation study in MATLAB/Simulink and experimental results on a 5-kW interior permanent magnet synchronous motor motor prototype. A high-efficiency, high-power-density Sigma converter for a 48 V rack architecture in data centers is proposed in this paper. The Sigma converter is a quasi-parallel converter that uses a high-efficiency unregulated converter to deliver the bulk power to the load. A small buck converter is responsible for regulating the output voltage with prescribed dynamic responses. A design guideline for Sigma converter with integrated magnetics is provided in this paper. The unregulated converter is an LLC converter designed with a printed circuit board (PCB) winding matrix transformer, a structure which integrates four elemental transformers into one core. The buck converter is designed with discrete gallium nitride (GaN) devices and a PCB winding inductor. In this paper, we propose adaptive algorithms of gain tuning for Kalman filters and switching Kalman and $\mathcal {H}_{\infty }$ filters for discrete systems. Both of the gain tuning and switching rely on square means of innovations. This paper also provides stability analyses on time-varying Kalman filters and derives a sufficient condition for their asymptotic stability, on which our gain-tuning algorithm is based. It should be noted that the stability condition is available for even nonstabilizable systems having their uncontrollable poles on the unit circle. To illustrate those algorithms, we perform simulations using a harmonic oscillator model that is nonstabilizable and has its poles on the unit circle. Furthermore, we apply the algorithms to estimation of a ship's oscillation, particularly, with time-varying frequencies by simulations and model experiments. This paper improves the position sensorless drive by sensing actual machine phase voltages. A high-bandwidth phase voltage measurement is developed for pulsewidth modulation (PWM) voltage inverters. On the basis, the actual phase voltage is obtained based on the digital integration of PWM voltage using the capture modulator in existing drive microcontrollers (MCU's). Comparing to existing phase voltage measurement, no separated A/D converter and communication hardware are required because PWM pulses are directly measured using MCUs. However, for standard machines without neutral points, only line-to-line ac PWM voltages can be measured for the phase voltage reconstruction. Since the capture based on transistor-transistor logic (TTL) logics receives only digital signals, a preprocess circuit to convert ac PWM line voltages to equivalent digital signals is proposed. This paper clearly explains the voltage sensing hardware using MCU capture modulator. According to experimental results, a 150-MHz sampling rate for phase voltage measurement is achieved based on the proposed capture-based voltage measurement. Although the physical limitation of back electromotive force estimation still appears, the proposed phase voltage measurement substantially enhances the sensorless drive performance at low speed. Metallic joints are created in multivariable gas metal arc welding process by maintaining a balance between the quantum of heat generated and the feeding rate of electrode metal to the weld gap. The wire feeding control is often independently handled. The wire feeder unit should be simple, low cost, and capable of producing accurate speed. Arc welding controllers are often kept in clumsy conditions and the wire feeder unit is located close to the welder, could be much away from the controller. To reduce interconnections, separate sensing element for speed feedback should be avoided. Due to their negligible electrical and mechanical time constant, the pancake-type permanent magnet dc motor is suitable for wire feeding, where sensing of back electromotive force (EMF) for feedback is easy. When high frequency pulsewidth modulation (PWM) controller is used, the sensing of back EMF gets complicated. This paper explores the constraints on the choice of PWM frequency along with its maximum pulsewidth for different types of dc motors. It further elaborates comparatively on the choice of suitable control function for generating accurate speed control of wire feeding using back EMF as feedback. Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems have been widely used to meet the emission regulations and two-cell SCR systems have shown the advantages of high NO $_{x}$ conversion efficiency and low NH $_{3}$ slip simultaneously. However, it is noteworthy that the catalyst performance of SCR device would degrade over the service time gradually. If the performance degrading is not well-compensated, the NO $_{x}$ conversion efficiency would reduce significantly. Different from detecting the aging issue in the laboratory, a practical method is to design an observer to estimate the aging factor online such that the urea injection can be modified accordingly. In this paper, we aim to construct an aging-factor observer for two-cell SCR systems. In order to reduce the algorithm computational load and guarantee the implementation performance, we propose a dual time-scale algorithm based on two-cell SCR model and unscented Kalman filter. There is a fast time scale and a slow time scale in the algorithm. Two simulation studies of constant aging factor and time-varying aging factor are investigated in the simulation environment of MATLAB/SIMULINK. The stability margin is an important attribute for the robustness analysis of the closed loop in a control system design, which indicates the tolerant-ability of the closed-loop stability to system uncertainty (or fault). Seeking to develop an advanced data-driven monitoring and management framework for control performance (especially for robust stability) of the closed-loop system, this paper presents a study on the data-driven realization of the closed-loop stability margin, and its application to control-performance-oriented process monitoring. Specifically, without identifying the system parameters, a data-driven realization of the stability margin is first determined based on the identified multiplication operator of the closed-loop transfer function matrices using time-domain closed-loop measurements. Second, a control-performance-oriented process monitoring approach is proposed based on the determined data-driven realization of the stability margin. The contributions of this paper will bridge the gap between the model-based robustness analysis/design and the data-driven techniques for the future research. This paper analyzes different stator windings configurations for permanent-magnet synchronous machines during the presence of a stator turn fault. Due to the inverter pulsewidth modulation, the fault commonly occurs in variable-frequency permanent-magnet machine drives. In this paper, two types of windings are compared to identify key machine topologies that can achieve the reduced influence of the turn fault. When the machine is operated in real time, the windings with separated neutral points reduce the torque ripple caused by fault-reflected flux harmonics. Analytical models based on equivalent circuits are developed to predict the machine flux and torque waveform during the presence of the turn fault. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the electromagnetic force and vibration behavior of an axial flux permanent magnet synchronous machine (AFPMSM). First, the AFPMSM configuration and two types of dual three-phase winding are introduced. Subsequently, the electromagnetic force of the double-stator inner-rotor AFPMSM is investigated. Its spatial and temporal characteristics are derived analytically and validated through two-dimensional Fourier decomposition. A multiphysics model is established to calculate the vibration of the AFPMSM, which includes control, electromagnetic, structural, and vibration model. The accuracy of this multiphysics model is verified by the modal and vibration test. Furthermore, the vibration of the AFPMSM with three winding types considering current harmonics are calculated based on the multiphysics model. The vibration performance of the AFPMSM with three different winding types are compared and the mechanism of vibration is discussed. It was concluded that the novel detached winding could mitigate the vibration of dual three-phase AFPMSMs. Finally, the vibration test is carried out to validate the theoretical analysis and the experimental results agree well-with the simulation results. Torsion-torque-sensing-based load-side acceleration control is proposed for a two-inertia resonance system in this paper. This control uses a torsion torque sensor installed in a reduction gear, and consists of a torsion torque controller and load-side disturbance observer (DOb). In the load side of the gear, the proposed control structure is equivalent to a conventional DOb-based acceleration controller on the motor side. Therefore, because the proposed controller suppresses resonance vibration in an acceleration dimension, torsion-torque-sensing-based load-side acceleration control has the capability of controlling the load-side acceleration. The problem of the conventional acceleration controller and the effectiveness of the proposed acceleration controller are verified by theoretical analysis, numerical simulations, and experiments. From the practical perspective, with large-scale cargoes or nonnegligible hook masses, the centers of gravity of cargoes and hooks do not coincide with each other, and shipboard cranes usually exhibit complex double-pendulum effects during ship-to-ship or ship-to-harbor transportation, which dramatically increase the complexity of dynamic characteristics and make the control issue very challenging. At present, there is no reported work on control of double-pendulum shipboard cranes yet. To tackle such problems, this paper obtains the dynamic model of double-pendulum shipboard cranes and then provides an effective nonlinear antiswing feedback controller to achieve stable cargo transportation. Specifically, new state variable signals are generated by combining the original state variables with the ship motion (induced by sea wave perturbations). Based on this, by adding some elaborately designed nonlinear terms, an antiswing feedback controller is proposed, which can achieve stable transportation with suppressed swing, and the closed-loop asymptotic stability is proven without any linearizations or approximations to the original complex nonlinear dynamics, with rigorous theoretical analysis. As far as we know, the paper provides the first solution for both controller design and stability analysis of double-pendulum shipboard cranes. Remaining useful life (RUL) prediction has been increasingly considered in many industrial fields for the reliability and safety of their systems. As a data analysis tool of deep learning, deep convolutional neural network (CNN) shows great potential for RUL prediction. This paper proposes an intelligent RUL prediction method based on a double-CNN model architecture. Given the powerful feature extraction capability of CNN, the proposed method is fed with original vibration signals with no need to resort to any feature extractor, which can also retain the useful information in maximum. The prediction includes two stages: first, incipient fault point is identified by the first CNN model and a proposed “3/5” principle; then, the second CNN model is constructed for RUL prediction. In practice, RULs of identical components are different from each other, which poses a major challenge in RUL prediction. To overcome this problem, an intermediate reliability variable is first calculated in this paper, instead of directly predicting the RUL value. Then, a mapping algorithm is proposed to map reliability to RUL. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, data of four tests of bearing degradation are utilized for RUL prediction. Compared with state-of-the-art methods, the proposed method shows higher prediction accuracy and robustness. Thanks to the advantages of high power density and the capacity of bidirectional power transfer, the CLLC resonant converter is widely used in the hybrid ac–dc microgrid as a dc transformer to interlink the ac and dc bus. Since the voltages of ac and dc bus are controlled by the energy management system, the CLLC resonant converter operates under open-loop condition, which means the switching frequency and duty cycle are fixed. As a result, in the hybrid ac–dc microgrid applications, for the CLLC converter, the main concern is not the voltage regulation but the conversion efficiency. This paper focuses on the total power loss optimization and the magnetic design of the CLLC resonant converter based on artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm. In order to optimize the total power loss, an AI algorithm-based two-stage optimal design method is proposed. In the first stage, the total power loss, including the driving loss, turn-off loss, conduction loss of the switches, the power loss of the resonant capacitances, and copper and core loss of the transformer are optimized by the proposed AI algorithm, GA+PSO, and the optimal parameters, including the leakage inductances (Lr1 and Lr2), magnetizing inductance (Lm), and resonant capacitances (Cr1 and Cr2) are derived. In the second stage, the optimal leakage inductances and magnetizing inductance are realized by setting proper distance between the primary winding and the secondary winding (dw), and the thickness of the air gap (da). As for the magnetic design, in this paper, the leakage inductances of a planar transformer are used as the resonant inductances. The equations of dw and da to achieve the optimal leakage inductances and magnetizing inductance are derived. This paper is mainly focusing on the problem of high-accuracy tracking control design for a class of nonlinear systems subject to mismatched uncertainties. A novel asymptotic control framework is presented. This is achieved by developing an estimator-based controller with an observer-based estimator, which is applied to precisely estimate all the system uncertainties. It is proved that the overall tracking system can be asymptotically stabilized. The estimation error of the system uncertainties is also ensured to be asymptotically stable. The main contribution of this paper is that the proposed solution can control a more representative class of nonlinear systems. Another key feature of this control framework is that the incorporated observer-based estimator can eliminate the assumption that system uncertainties should vary slowly or even have no variation in the existing estimators for uncertainties. Linear induction motors (LIMs) have been extensively adopted in urban railway transportation given their nonadhesion thrust and simple stator structure. However, these LIMs undergo unfavorable power factor and efficiency considering their copper and eddy losses. Recently, linear flux-switching permanent-magnet motors (LFSPMs) have attracted the attention of researchers due to their high power density, simple structure, easy heat dissipation, high efficiency, and high power factor. However, so far, no quantitative comparison exists between LFSPMs and LIMs of the size 1:1 to prove the feasibility of LFSPMs to be used in railway transit systems. Therefore, a comparative analysis between the two motors is conducted in this paper. First, this paper investigates the LIMs for railway transit using the finite element method (FEM). Second, the LFSPMs for railway transit is designed and optimized. Third, the electromagnetic performance of the two motors is compared and analyzed through the FEM. Finally, a small-sized prototype of the LFSPMs is constructed to validate the FEM results. It is concluded that LFSPMs offer a favorable thrust force, have high efficiency, and high power factor but have large normal force and force ripple. Turbomolecular pumps with ultrahigh vacuum performances are a desired technology among modern vacuum systems, which requires the pump to synchronously possess the wide pumping speed and high vacuum. This paper describes a systematic design methodology for a magnetically levitated turbomolecular pump with consideration of multiphysics constraints, such as the mechanical strength, rotor dynamics, electromagnetic losses, and thermal characteristic. These variables will directly decide the acquisition of high vacuum performances. The design process for such high-performance pumps requires multidisciplinary and highly iterative due to the complex interaction of the many design variables involved. The structure of the bladed rotor is determined in terms of the material selection and mechanical verification. In this paper, an effective modeling method is presented to achieve accurate bending modes of the bladed rotor. An assessment on the loss level and the thermal limit is performed to ensure the temperature rise of the pump within the acceptable range. The measured results show that the pump can achieve the high vacuum performance with the pumping speed of 4370 l/s and the lowest working pressure of 10–8 magnitude. This paper presents a six-step mode-combined field-weakening control scheme to improve the maximum output torque of induction motor (IM) in the voltage-extension region. Compared with the conventional inscribed circle and hexagon methods, the proposed six-step mode method can increase the utilization of dc-link voltage, leading to extended maximum output torque capability. However, the six-step mode operation will inevitably result in torque ripple and current harmonic. To figure out the quantitative relation between the torque extension and ripple, an “equivalent-circuit”-based method is proposed for theoretical torque analysis in six-step mode. To cut off the main current harmonic (sixth harmonic), a second-order generalized integrator based band-stop filter is designed for the feedback current in the current loop. The designed filter can achieve IM stable operation in a six-step mode without affecting the bandwidth of the current loop. In recent years, many deep-network-based super-resolution techniques have been proposed and have achieved impressive results for 2 ${\times }$ and higher magnification factors. However, lower magnification factors encountered in some industrial applications have not received special attention, such as 720P-to-1080P (1.5 ${\times }$ magnification). Compared to traditional 2 ${\times }$ or higher magnification factors, these lower magnifications are much simpler, but reconstructions of high-definition images are time-consuming and computationally complex. Hence, in this paper, a fast image upsampling method is designed specifically for industrial applications at low magnification. In the proposed method, edge and nonedge areas are first distinguished and then reconstructed via different fast approaches. For the edge area, a local edge pattern encoding-based method is presented to recover sharp edges. For the nonedge area, a global iterative reconstruction with texture constraint is utilized. Moreover, some acceleration strategies are also presented to further reduce the complexity. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can obtain performance comparable to that of some state-of-the-art methods for 720P-to-1080P magnification, but the computational cost is much lower. A space vector modulation (SVM) technique of a dual-inverter system for an open-end winding motor drive is described in this paper, where one inverter has a battery power source and the other has an only capacitor across the dc bus. The SVM must be achieved to operate the motor with field-oriented control and simultaneously to control the capacitor voltage at a constant value by using redundant switching states of the dual-inverter system. The control of the capacitor voltage is carried out by selecting a charging or a discharging mode in each redundant switching state, taking the instantaneous motor power factor into account. In addition, it is also required to reduce the error voltage pulses, which are generated in output multilevel voltage waveforms during the dead time. The compensation method of the existing dead-time scheme and the improved SVM sequence to reduce the error voltage vectors are proposed in this paper. The proposed methods are examined through several experimental tests and are confirmed to generate superior output voltage waveforms from the viewpoint of the measured total harmonic distortion and dv/dt. Manual assembly is still an essential part in modern manufacturing. Understanding the actual state of the assembly process can not only improve quality control of products, but also collect comprehensive data for production planning and proficiency assessments. Addressing the rising complexity led by the uncertainty in manual assembly, this paper presents an efficient approach to automatically capture and analyze hand operations in the assembly process. In this paper, a detection-based tracking method is introduced to capture trajectories of hand movement from the camera installed in each workstation. Then, the actions in hand trajectories are identified with a novel temporal action localization model. The experimental results have proved that our method reached the application level with high accuracy and a low computational cost. The proposed system is lightweight enough to be quickly set up on an embedded computing device for real-time online inference and on a cloud server for offline analysis as well. This paper is concerned with parameter learning of chips with small outline transistor (SOT) package, which is one of the most widely used package in surface mount technology (SMT) and has various subcategories. Previously learned parameter is crucial to most SOT-related industrial applications, such as location and defect inspection. However, parameter learning is a challenging work because of package diversity and image-quality deterioration in practical industrial applications. The conventional methods, checking data sheet or manual measuring, cannot meet the accuracy requirement of SMT. This paper proposes a hierarchical-backtracking-based parameter learner for SOT chips. The Gaussian mixture model based clustering algorithm and random walker algorithm are firstly applied to extracting lead regions of SOT chip; Then, chip models are inferred by grouping these lead regions with a hierarchical backtracking algorithm. Finally, redundant models are eliminated with root set pyramids and the valid chip model is obtained. Solid state transformer (SST) integrated hybrid dc–ac microgrid (HMG) has wide operating capabilities in presence of dc–ac loads, renewable energy resources, and energy storage. This paper proposes control strategies for localized control of zonal hybrid microgrid, enabled by the SST and centralized energy storage devices (ESD) integrated using dual active bridge (DAB) converter. The control of DAB dc–dc converter is modified for zero circulating power flow (ZCPF) operation in both SST and ESD. Power management and coordination control used in this paper ensures the power supply reliability of the zonal HMG integrated through the SST. Microgrid system, along with its proposed controllers, provides a stabilized low-voltage dc and ac network ports, in both grid feeding and forming modes. The performance of the configured HMG system is evaluated under various power management scenarios using the MATLAB software platform. This paper presents an ultra-high-frequency (UHF) passive sense tag for electrical grid and substation thermal monitoring, with emphasis on the tag system optimization and the design of a low power embedded temperature sensor. The designed tag achieves a sensitivity of $-$ 12.3 dBm under active temperature monitoring operation, which is the state of the art among existing UHF passive temperature sense tag products. The sensing inaccuracy of the tag is $\pm$ 2.5 $^{\circ }$ C (3 $\sigma$) from $-$ 25 to 120 $^{\circ }$ C after a low-cost wireless single-point trim. An antimetal ceramic-packaged tag was tested by attaching to a ring main unit in the substation and complete tag system demonstrated robust wireless operation with a sensing distance of 3.5 m. The combination of batteryless and wireless operation, high sensitivity, wide sensing range, and small incident-power-dependent error ($\pm$ 0.2 $^{\circ }$ C) makes this tag suitable for the target applications. Induction motor fault identification is essential to improve efficiency in industrial processes improving costs, production line, and maintenance time. This paper presents a novel motor fault detection methodology based on quaternion signal analysis. The proposed method establishes the quaternion coefficients as the value of motor current measurement, and the variables x, y, and z are the measurements from a triaxial accelerometer mounted on the induction motor chassis. The method obtains the rotation of quaternions and applies quaternion rotation statistics such as mean, cluster shades, and cluster prominence in order to get their features, and these are used to classify the motor state using the proposed tree classification algorithm.
