Multiphase variable-speed drives and generation systems (systems with more than three phases) have become one of the mainstream research areas during the last decade. The main driving forces are the specific applications, predominantly related to the green agenda, such as electric and hybrid electric vehicles (EVs), locomotive traction, ship propulsion, “more-electric” aircraft, remote offshore wind farms for electric energy generation, and general high-power industrial applications. As a result, produced body of significant work is substantial, making it impossible to review all the major developments in a single paper. This paper therefore surveys the recent progress in two specific areas associated with multiphase systems, namely power electronic supply control and innovative ways of using the additional degrees of freedom in multiphase machines for various nontraditional purposes. DC shipboard power systems have been considered as a promising solution for stricter environmental regulations on ships due to their main benefits in fuel savings with variable speed engines and easy integration of energy storage systems. In order to employ the dc solution in the shipboard power systems, the dc power systems have to be protected from a system fault with protection selectivity to minimize impacts of the fault or to avoid other undesirable situations in the system. For low-voltage dc shipboard power systems, a three-level protection has been proposed: 1) fast action (first)—bus separation by solid-state dc bus-tie switch; 2) medium action (second)—feeder protection by high-speed fuse; and 3) slow action (third)—generator–rectifier fault controls. This paper proposes a new method by means of additional bus capacitance added in main dc buses to help reliable operation of the three-level protection. The principle of the proposed method is introduced and the sizing of the additional bus capacitance is addressed in this paper. With the modeling of the dc shipboard power systems, the analyses of voltage drops for the bus separation failure and fault clearing time for the feeder protection are carried out to verify the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method not only mitigates the voltage drop for the bus separation failure, but also achieves the selectivity and the sensitivity for the feeder protection. This paper considers real-time energy-optimal trajectory generation for a servomotor system that performs a single-axis point-to-point positioning task for a fixed time interval. The servomotor system is subject to acceleration and speed constraints. The trajectory generation is formulated as a linear-constrained optimal control problem (LCOCP), and the Pontryagin's maximum principle is applied to derive necessary optimality conditions. Instead of solving multipoint boundary value problems directly, this paper proposes a novel real-time algorithm based on two realizations: solving the LCOCP is equivalent to determining an optimal time interval of the speed-constrained arc and solving a specific acceleration-constrained optimal control problem (ACOCP), and solving an ACOCP is equivalent to determining optimal switch times of acceleration-constrained arcs and solving a specific two-point boundary value problem (TBVP). The proposed algorithm constructs sequences of time intervals, ACOCPs, switch times, and TBVPs, such that all sequences converge to their counterparts of an optimal solution of the LCOCP. Numerical simulation verifies that the proposed algorithm is capable of generating energy-optimal trajectories in real time. Experiments validate that the use of energy-optimal trajectories as references in a servomotor system does not compromise tracking performance but leads to considerable less energy consumption. In this paper, the conventional I- and T-type three-level neutral-point-clamped (3L-NPC) inverter for low-voltage renewable energy systems is first investigated. Literature research shows that the T-type inverter improves I-type's insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) $+$ IGBT current paths. However, the IGBT $+$ diode paths are the same. The calculation in this paper further reveals that the IGBT $+$ diode current paths dominate the conduction losses and even the whole semiconductor losses. Based on the aforementioned recognitions, a novel T-type inverter is presented as an alternative to be applied in the low-voltage renewable energy systems. In the proposed 3L-NPC, four CoolMosfets replace the IGBT $+$ diode middle bidirectional switch. In the proposed topology, there is no diode involved in the current path supposing the unity power factor. Soft-switching techniques of transformerless photovoltaic grid-connected inverters (TLIs) can significantly reduce switching losses, as well as soften switching processes. Conventional dc–ac soft-switching configurations proposed by Dr. Deepakraj M. Divan are invalid in TLIs because of the leakage current problem. In order to develop soft-switching techniques in TLIs, this paper proposes a new soft-switching configuration and a procedure to guide the invention of soft-switching TLIs. First, this paper proposes two basic resonance tanks related to dc bus polarities, and then, uses these basic tanks to elevate four popular full-bridge-type TLIs according to the proposed guideline. As a result, four soft-switching TLIs are gained. Second, this paper picks obtained soft-switching highly efficient and reliable inverter concept (HERIC) as example to analyze its soft-switching operation principle and performance. As a consequence, all active switches of the gained soft-switching HERIC circuit are switched under both of zero-current turn-on and turn-off conditions; the reverse recovery problem of freewheeling diodes is alleviated owing to the zero-current turn-off of diodes; meanwhile, the common-mode voltage at the switching frequency scale is still constant. Finally, some experimental results from a 3-kW universal prototype at 50-kHz switching frequency are provided to verify the effectiveness of the main contributions of this paper. This paper characterizes the sampling effect in digital sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) of voltage source inverter (VSI). The time-domain analysis presented in this paper establishes the relation between the fundamental frequency, carrier frequency, and the sampling frequency at different modulation indices of the SPWM. The analysis investigates the effect of sampling frequency of the digital controller on the output of the VSI. It is shown that the low-frequency harmonic components appear in the frequency spectrum of the VSI output voltage due to sampling. As a result, the output current of digitally controlled VSI is stepped in nature. The double Fourier integral solution of the switched waveform for inner and outer integral limits has been used to derive the expression. The integral solution is obtained using Jacobi-Anger expansions. The generalized results developed in this paper are useful to investigate the sampling effect in high switching frequency DSPWM. The proposed sampling effect has been analyzed for SPWM of single-phase H-bridge inverter. The analytical results are verified using simulation and experimental results. This paper proposes a new isolated single-stage single-switch power-factor-correction (S4 PFC) driver for supplying light-emitting diodes (LEDs) without electrolytic capacitor. In the proposed LED driver, the switch turns on under zero current switching (ZCS) condition. Also, it turns on at a voltage less than its nominal voltage stress, and therefore, the switch capacitive turn-on loss decreases too much extent. The leakage energy is absorbed, so there are no voltage spikes across the switch when the switch turns off. In this paper, operating principles of the proposed driver are discussed, and design considerations are presented. Also, a laboratory prototype for supplying a 21 W/30 V LED module from 220 Vrms/50\,\rm Hz ac mains is implemented, and experimental results are presented to verify the theoretical analysis. The predictive control method deals with the prediction of the motor behavior based on a mathematical model of the motor. This model is dependent on the motor parameters. However, these parameters may not match with their actual values due to the measurement error or they may change during the operation of the motor. All these uncertainties and model inexactitude lead to inaccurate prediction of the motor behavior and deteriorate the performance of the predictive algorithm. This paper presents an extension of the predictive current control (PCC) method to improve the prediction accuracy for a permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The proposed strategy not only reduces the current ripple but also improves the robustness of the system against parameter uncertainties. Practical applications of controllers often impose further requirements on the implementation beyond the actual control performance, such as the ability to switch between manual and automatic control or between different control laws or controller parameter settings, known as bumpless transfer. Another common requirement is to limit the control signal in magnitude and/or rate. This paper examines and extends several discrete-time variants of active disturbance rejection control (ADRC), which is increasingly being applied especially in the field of power electronics and drives, in this regard. A hybrid switched-capacitor/interleaved boost converter able to provide a high voltage gain and to cancel the input current ripple at a preselected duty cycle was recently presented in the literature. This paper extends that work by proposing an optimized switching strategy for operating conditions at other values of duty cycle. The switching strategy effect on the converter's voltage gain and input current ripple is quantified and compared against the performance under the conventional switching strategy. The aim of this paper is to study the dynamics of a permanent magnet direct current (PMDC) brushed motor while two crucial space-domain effects, namely, slotting effect and commutation phenomenon are taken into account. Semi-analytical dynamic time-domain PMDC brushed motor model inclusive of these space-domain effects is used to analyze and investigate the dynamics. Pulse width modulation operated discontinuous current PMDC brushed motor drive with steady duty cycle is employed to acquire the bifurcation patterns. The chaotic nature due to slotting effect and commutation is identified from the bifurcation patterns and reported. It also has to be admired that such nonlinear dynamical behavior with the same set of parameters at similar operating condition has not been observed when a conventional PMDC brushed motor dynamic model is considered. These space-domain effects, namely, slotting effect and commutation also have a prominent impact to make some time-domain states of a PMDC brushed motor drive chaotic. The role of slotting effect and commutation phenomenon to analyze the chaos over time-domain state variables of the PMDC brushed motor drive is investigated and validated experimentally in this paper. The randomly switching communication topologies are of particular interest for researchers in the field of consensus control since the communication connection among multiple agents can randomly change with time and space. Following this pattern, this paper models the communication topology with the Markovian randomly switching graphs, since the Markovian chain process is usually used to model the network with Rayleigh fading channel. In this stochastic framework, this paper focuses on the consensus control and performance improvement problems of grouped agents with linear or linearized nominal dynamics. To solve this problem, a class of state-feedback controllers is proposed under the assumption that all the state measurements are available. These controllers are intrinsically distributed since they solely require the relative information between neighboring agents. Moreover, the notion of $\mathcal {H}_{\infty }$ ($\mathcal {H}_2$) stochastic consensus region integrated with transient performance is defined to measure the robustness of the proposed controllers with respect to the communication topologies. This paper theoretically shows that these controllers yield unbounded consensus region, which implies that they are well-designed. Furthermore, these controllers can improve the $\mathcal {H}_{\infty }$ , $\mathcal {H}_2$ consensus, and transient performances of agents subject to external and initial-state disturbances. The development of wide band-gap semiconductor devices is rapidly promoting the development of power electronics technology, especially in high frequency (HF) power converter region. A category of HF power converter is switch-mode power amplifier (PA). This paper focuses on the implementation of a multiphase dc–dc PA with high bandwidth and high power rate. When naturally sampled phase-shifted carrier modulation is implemented in the practical digital control system to control this HF power converter, the pulsewidth error problem caused by limited domain frequency of control chip becomes much severer. As a result, dc voltage component of each phase becomes different under several conditions, leading to current imbalance among phase inductors. This paper analyzes this problem and proposes a sensorless control method to solve it, based on the injection of random sequence in reference wave. A four-phase prototype employing GaN devices is fabricated, switching at 1 MHz. Current imbalance and effectiveness of the proposed control method are verified by experimental results. This paper presents an optimization method for selective harmonic elimination in a cascaded multilevel inverter using teaching–learning-based optimization (TLBO). The main objective in selective harmonic elimination (SHE) strategy is to eliminate low-order harmonics by solving nonlinear equations and reaching optimal solution, while the fundamental component is satisfied. In this paper, in one side, the influence of optimal dc sources is investigated to reach the SHE goal, and in another side, comparing optimization methods is considered. In this paper, the TLBO as a recently emerged nature-inspired algorithm is presented to provide better results for the SHE in comparison with genetic algorithm, artificial bee colony, imperialistic competitive algorithm, harmony search, ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization, and differential evolution. For better comparison of those methods and influence of optimal dc sources, 5-, 9-, and 15-level inverters are chosen and MATLAB software is used for optimization. Simulation results show the superiority of TLBO, higher precision and probability of convergence than other mentioned algorithms. Finally, to validate the influence of optimal dc sources and the accuracy of TLBO results, the experimental setup is conducted for a 5-level cascaded H-bridge inverter with optimal dc sources. In this paper, the design methodology of switched-tank converter (STC) is presented. The power loss breakdown analysis is conducted to point out the directions and paths for components optimization. It is revealed that the switching device conduction loss, printed circuit board (PCB) loss, and inductor loss become significant when output power is >150 W. Power loss of four switches is calculated and compared for switching device selection. The resonant capacitor is carefully designed to meet both current stress and ripple requirements. On the other hand, optimal design of the resonant inductors and PCB layout are fully investigated. The core loss model is provided, and different core materials are compared to minimize the core loss. Besides, a fine-tuned inductor winding structure is designed to achieve the lowest winding loss. Furthermore, PCB layout is optimized to get short loop length for each operation state. In addition to the hardware level optimization, an improved control method is proposed, in which the conduction time of switching devices is tuned to mitigate the circulating power. To verify the optimization work, a prototype of STC is built and tested. Active magnetic bearing is a core technology for high-speed rotational machines. Power electronics converter as the active magnetic bearing drive is the actuation unit and its topology highly impacts the performance of the bearing system. This paper introduces the progress of topology of active magnetic bearing drive. The initial topology of an H-bridge does not sufficiently utilize the power electronics devices. The topology with half-bridge and shared phase-leg has been proposed as the fundamental topology. In this paper, two approaches of novel magnetic bearing drive topology modification have been developed on the basis of the fundamental topology. In the first approach, central phase-leg for multiaxis magnetic bearing drive can be further shared and the power electronic devices can be globally optimized in the whole system. Further, a topology with current in the reverse direction can reduce the central phase-leg current rating and power losses. In the second approach, fault-tolerant magnetic bearing drive topology has been developed on the basis of the fundamental topology, too. It can ride-through the open-circuit fault of power electronics switch-in operation and keep levitation for the magnetic bearing. This paper presents the development of a Class-D full-bridge zero-voltage switching (ZVS) inverter, applicable to wireless power transfer (WPT) systems, operating at 13.56 MHz switching frequency with dynamic dead-time control (DDTC). Resonant-coupled WPT systems are being designed at ultrahigh switching frequencies to reduce the size of the wireless link and the passive components. Maintaining ZVS while controlling the output power delivered to a fixed or variable load is one of the major challenges of designing inverters at multi-MHz switching frequencies. DDTC is the approach deployed in this paper to sustain soft switching of a Class-D full-bridge inverter over the full range of output power while regulating the input dc bus voltage. Simulation results are presented to show that dynamically controlling the dead-time during input dc bus voltage variations reduces switch-node voltage overshoot, prevents large current spikes in the switching devices, and reduces associated high switching loss. Practical results obtained show that DDTC reduces switch-node voltage overshoot, increases the inverter efficiency, and reduces the steady-state temperature of the inverter during output power regulation. In this paper, a new modular and active snubber cell, easily applicable, and attractive for converters, especially have many switches proposed. This snubber cell is implemented on the single phase of a grid-connected three-phase T-type three-level inverter (T-3LI). In this new converter, the main switches turn-on under zero-voltage transition and turn-off under zero-voltage switching (ZVS). Also, auxiliary switches turn-on under zero-current switching and turn-off under ZVS. All snubber diodes operate under soft switching (SS). There are no additional current and voltage stresses on the main switches. During an SS operation, the switching energies are transferred to a dc voltage source. Then, these energies are processed to input with an independent dc–dc converter. Thus, all switching energies are recycled. Compared with the conventional two-level dual-active-bridge (DAB) dc–dc converter, the three-level DAB converter could operate with lower voltage rated switching devices and provide more control degrees of freedom, which enhances the control flexibility. This paper proposes a modulation strategy with five control degrees of freedom. In the previous work with multiple control degrees, the optimization strategies for efficiency or inductor current minimization are investigated; however, these strategies all need detailed mode analysis and complex mathematical optimization tools to obtain the optimal duty cycles. In this paper, an optimization strategy for the root-mean-square value of the inductor current is proposed. This method extracts the fundamental and third-harmonic components from the high-frequency voltages on both sides and adjusts the amplitude of the bridge voltages by the vector diagram to obtain the optimal duty cycles. The inductor current can be reduced significantly at light loads with the proposed strategy, so the efficiency of the converter can be improved. Moreover, the optimization process does not need the detailed operation analysis of the converter, nor does it require the complex mathematical optimization tools. In this paper, we propose adaptive algorithms of gain tuning for Kalman filters and switching Kalman and $\mathcal {H}_{\infty }$ filters for discrete systems. Both of the gain tuning and switching rely on square means of innovations. This paper also provides stability analyses on time-varying Kalman filters and derives a sufficient condition for their asymptotic stability, on which our gain-tuning algorithm is based. It should be noted that the stability condition is available for even nonstabilizable systems having their uncontrollable poles on the unit circle. To illustrate those algorithms, we perform simulations using a harmonic oscillator model that is nonstabilizable and has its poles on the unit circle. Furthermore, we apply the algorithms to estimation of a ship's oscillation, particularly, with time-varying frequencies by simulations and model experiments. A space vector modulation (SVM) technique of a dual-inverter system for an open-end winding motor drive is described in this paper, where one inverter has a battery power source and the other has an only capacitor across the dc bus. The SVM must be achieved to operate the motor with field-oriented control and simultaneously to control the capacitor voltage at a constant value by using redundant switching states of the dual-inverter system. The control of the capacitor voltage is carried out by selecting a charging or a discharging mode in each redundant switching state, taking the instantaneous motor power factor into account. In addition, it is also required to reduce the error voltage pulses, which are generated in output multilevel voltage waveforms during the dead time. The compensation method of the existing dead-time scheme and the improved SVM sequence to reduce the error voltage vectors are proposed in this paper. The proposed methods are examined through several experimental tests and are confirmed to generate superior output voltage waveforms from the viewpoint of the measured total harmonic distortion and dv/dt. Solid state transformer (SST) integrated hybrid dc–ac microgrid (HMG) has wide operating capabilities in presence of dc–ac loads, renewable energy resources, and energy storage. This paper proposes control strategies for localized control of zonal hybrid microgrid, enabled by the SST and centralized energy storage devices (ESD) integrated using dual active bridge (DAB) converter. The control of DAB dc–dc converter is modified for zero circulating power flow (ZCPF) operation in both SST and ESD. Power management and coordination control used in this paper ensures the power supply reliability of the zonal HMG integrated through the SST. Microgrid system, along with its proposed controllers, provides a stabilized low-voltage dc and ac network ports, in both grid feeding and forming modes. The performance of the configured HMG system is evaluated under various power management scenarios using the MATLAB software platform. This paper presents a novel integrated-stage light-emitting diode (LED) driver based on Flyback and resonant converters. The Flyback converter realizes power factor correction in the discontinuous conduction mode. The resonant converter is operated as a dc–dc converter to support the LED loads. Moreover, the resonant converter can clearly decrease the drain–source voltage of the active switch and exhibits zero-voltage-switch characteristics. Therefore, a cost-effective MOSFET can be chosen as the main control component that can decrease the cost of the whole system. Compared to a single-active-switch converter (such as Class-E converter), the number of passive components in the resonant converter can be limited to four. Therefore, the power density of the system can be improved drastically. In this paper, a single-inductor dual-output (SIDO) dc–dc converter is proposed. The significant feature of the proposed converter is feeding a constant power load in low-voltage side (LVS) port, where even feeding a variable load at LVS does not have any cross regulation to high-voltage side port with the desired approximation. Magnificently, both merits are obtained in open-loop manner, which is an outstanding characteristic in comparison with that of the existed converters. In this paper, soft commutation and soft switching of switches and diodes are investigated along with the aforementioned main novelty. Moreover, detailed theoretical analyses of the proposed SIDO dc–dc converter in continuous conduction mode are presented besides the comparisons with some other structures. In this paper, a series-capacitor-based interleaving buck power factor correction (PFC) converter is proposed, the intermediate energy storage capacitance of which is operated at discontinuous capacitor voltage mode (DCVM), and automatic power factor (PF) correction for this converter is obtained. Moreover, the voltage across the series capacitor of the proposed PFC converter is clamped at the input voltage, and thus peak voltage stress existed in the traditional DCVM buck PFC could be relieved. By effectively regulating the charge/discharge time for the series capacitor, ultrahigh step-down conversion ratio of the proposed converter is achieved, the conversion ratio of which is independent of the duty cycle and only related to the switching frequency and circuit parameters. Therefore, high PF can be obtained due to very narrow deadtime of the input current. Meanwhile, the proposed PFC converter can realize the soft turn-on of part power switch and soft turn-off of part power diodes. In addition, comparing with the traditional discontinuous inductor current mode PFC, the input current of the proposed PFC converter is continuous so that the peak value and root-mean-square value of input current can be reduced. The operational principle, performance analysis, and parameter design principle are given in this paper. The analysis results show that the PF and total harmonic distortion are also independent of the duty cycle. Reduced switch active phase converters (APC) are cost-effective solutions for running three-phase loads from single-phase grids. This paper proposes a novel auxiliary-capacitor-based APC (AC-APC) for this application. The combination of the topological location of the auxiliary capacitor and the control of the AC-APC reduces current stress on the semiconductor devices. In this paper, a selection criterion for the optimal auxiliary capacitor value is formulated to reduce the device currents in such a way that the overall efficiency is enhanced. This paper presents a comparative analysis of converter volt-ampere (VA) rating and device power loss for conventional H-bridge active front-end and inverter-based topology, APC, and AC-APC. To evaluate the efficacy of the proposed AC-APC, an experimental study is conducted on the APC and the AC-APC feeding a 3-hp three-phase induction motor. At a full load of $\text{2.5}\,\text{kW}$ and $\text{0.8 } \text{power factor}$ , the measured maximum efficiency of the AC-APC is $2\%$ higher than that of the APC. This paper presents a novel insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) behavioral model on the field programmable gate array (FPGA), which is suitable for the real-time simulation of fast transients in power electronics circuits. In this model, the static and dynamic behaviors of the IGBT switch are described and modeled separately. The static IGBT model is represented by the saturation region of output characteristic and is a part of the circuit network model. The dynamic IGBT model is combined with the static one to describe the fast switching transient behaviors by using the IGBT equivalent circuit model. The presented dynamic model in this paper does not involve any iterative solving algorithm and can be designed with highly pipelined structures on FPGA. Therefore, the IGBT switching transient waveforms can be generated precisely with a 5 ns resolution. The proposed model is tested with two cases—a four-phase floating interleaved boost converter and a three-phase five-level modular multilevel converter. This paper proposes a visible light communication (VLC) system consisting of a single-stage buck–boost power factor correction converter operating in the discontinuous conduction mode with dimming capability. Additionally, this paper proposes the on–off M-frequency shift keying modulation for the VLC system. This modulation allows for the transmission of more than a single bit for each switching period without affecting the dimming characteristics of the light-emitting diode luminaire. The design of the whole system is discussed in detail, including both transmitter and receiver modules. A 20-W laboratory prototype was built in order to verify the proposed modulation scheme. The experimental evaluation showed a good performance of the transmitter, which was able to perform simultaneously the desired functions, namely power factor correction, dimming, and data transmission. The receiver also achieved the desired performance with a low bit error rate (BER). The results showed that the proposed system was able to transfer data between emitter and receiver with a bit rate of 1.11 Mb/s at a frequency of up to 375 kHz over a distance of 10 m, and with a BER lower than $10^{-3}$ under the influence of external lighting sources with illuminance levels up to 500 lx. Motors and inverters are increasingly being used in vehicles. As more vehicle components are being adopted, requirement for safety and installation space are increasing. Growing attention is being paid to the use of six-phase permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) and their parallel control by two inverters, because of their reduced size and enhanced safety. This paper proposes a pulsewidth modulation (PWM) control algorithm for a six-phase PMSM. In low-voltage vehicle components such as electric power steering, the current is usually acquired with resistors placed under the low-side switching devices. In the proposed control algorithm, the neutral voltage of the two inverters is shifted to either a lower or higher voltage within a certain range to allow for the signal conditioning time delay after the switching device turns on or off, and the time taken for the phase current to rise or settle. The paper proposes a novel PWM control algorithm that ensures that the on-time of the low-side switching devices satisfies the restriction on current sensing with resistors and reduces the current in the capacitor at the same time. The phasor-PWM-based current source inverter (CSI) is a boost inverter. The difference between conventional CSIs and the boost inverter is that the boost ratio (VLLrms/Vdc ) in the boost inverter can easily be above 3.0, whereas this ratio is around 1 in conventional CSIs. In order to realize the potential capabilities of the boost inverter and to assist its penetration into renewable energy systems, the boost inverter dynamic behaviors are studied in this paper. First, the large- and small-signal models as well as the dq-equivalent circuits of the boost inverter are presented. Then, the developed models are verified using circuit simulations and experiments on a laboratory-scale 2-kW 208/240- V_{\rm LLrms} V_{\rm dc}=65\ \hbox{V} $ boost inverter made of reverse-blocking IGBTs. Finally, the developed small-signal model is used to study the stability of the boost inverter through root locus of small signal poles (eigenvalues) as control inputs, and load parameters vary within the boost inverter's operating limits. This paper introduces an improved signal processing technique of zero sequence voltage (ZSV) with the scope of position sensorless commutation of a BLDC motor drive system. Rotor position information is extracted in the proposed technique from ZSV. This signal includes all time intervals where back electromagnetic force (EMF) zero crossings (ZCs) occur, from which the commutation instants are determined. This technique exploits maximally flat group delay of Bessel low-pass filters for switching noise suppression. This attribute leads to a speed-independent time displacement of ZSV. The fundamental frequency of ZSV is determined through a median-filtering algorithm, which is required for a dynamic rate limiter that eliminates erroneous ZCs. In sequence, a pulse train is generated by the detected ZCs of the emerged signal and properly shifted to determine the correct commutation instants. The proposed technique ensures a wide operational speed range for the drive system. A theoretical analysis of the drive system is presented, considering a BLDC motor with nonideal back-EMF. Exploiting the rich switching redundancies of the dual inverter, new hybrid pulsewidth-modulation (PWM) switching methods are proposed in this paper using the degree of freedom of operating the individual inverters independently, in addition to exercising the degree of freedom of controlling the switching action of the individual legs independently. Two voltage entities, namely, common-mode voltage (CMV) and differential-mode voltage are identified in the dual inverter, and all hybrid PWMs are envisaged aimed at reducing and also eliminating the CMV in it. The effects of such attempts on motor shaft voltage and also the motor bearing currents are presented in detail. Furthermore, bearing current profiles of an open-end winding induction motor are also presented with both conventional and hybrid PWMs proposed in this paper. Electric discharge machining discharge currents are completely eliminated with the use of all hybrid PWM methods proposed in this paper. In addition, implications of completely eliminating the CMV are also presented in this paper. Multilevel inverters with dodecagonal (12-sided polygon) voltage space vector structure have advantages, such as complete elimination of fifth and seventh harmonics, reduction in electromagnetic interference, reduction in device voltage ratings, reduction of switching frequency, extension of linear modulation range, etc., making it a viable option for high-power medium-voltage drives. This paper proposes two power circuit topologies capable of generating multilevel dodecagonal voltage space vector structure with symmetric triangles (for the first time) with minimum number of dc-link power supplies and floating capacitor H-bridges. The first power topology is composed of two hybrid cascaded five-level inverters connected to either side of an open-end winding induction machine. Each inverter consists of a three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter, which is cascaded with an isolated H-bridge making it a five-level inverter. The second topology is for a normal induction motor. Both of these circuit topologies have inherent capacitor balancing for floating H-bridges for all modulation indexes, including transient operations. The proposed topologies do not require any precharging circuitry for startup. A simple pulsewidth modulation timing calculation method for space vector modulation is also presented in this paper. Due to the symmetric arrangement of congruent triangles within the voltage space vector structure, the timing computation requires only the sampled reference values and does not require any offline computation, lookup tables, or angle computation. A circuit configuration, a circuit topological family, a buck-mode active clamped circuit, and an instantaneous output voltage feedback control strategy of combined bidirectional buck–boost dc–dc chopper-mode inverter with high-frequency (HF) link (HFL) were proposed and fully investigated in this paper. The steady principle characteristic and the design criteria for the key circuit parameters were given in this paper. The circuit configuration is composed of two identical isolated bidirectional buck–boost dc–dc choppers with the same input and output filters. These two choppers in parallel at input end and in series at output end generate unipolarity sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation current waveforms with positive and negative half low-frequency cycles separately. The circuit topological family includes four circuit topologies, such as one-transistor mode. Taking the one-transistor mode circuit topology as an example, the 750VA48VDC/220V50HzAC prototype is designed and implemented. In photovoltaic systems, common-mode voltage (CMV) generates leakage current, which shortens the insulation lifespan and causes safety problems. As for neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverters, zero CMV PWM (ZCMV PWM) can be implemented to eliminate leakage current, but unable to balance neutral-point (NP) voltage in dc side. This article presents a novel modulation technique for NPC PV inverter. The strategy contains ZCMV PWM and another two modulation modes which keeps CMV constant in one switching period, so as to eliminate leakage current. In order to balance NP voltage, NP current is adjusted by selection of optimal modulation mode and the leakage current is still well eliminated during the process of balancing NP voltage. Compared with conventional ZCMV PWM, the proposed scheme can remove both leakage current and NP voltage deviation. Chaotic sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) can be used to suppress the electromagnetic interference in power converters. In this paper, a mathematical method for estimating power losses in insulated-gate bipolar transistors and freewheeling diodes occurring under chaotic frequency modulation SPWM (CFM-SPWM) switching is proposed. This method is based on the features of the chaotic mapping and uses semiconductor datasheet information to calculate the power losses in a discrete way. Analytical expressions and approximations for estimating the losses for the cases of SPWM and CFM-SPWM switching, respectively, are presented. This paper includes a quantitative comparison of the losses under the two previously mentioned cases. It is confirmed that CFM-SPWM does not result in higher power losses when it greatly improves electromagnetic compatibility of power converters, and hence, its adoption will not require any modified converter thermal design. The shunt regulator is a key part of the power conditioning unit, which is becoming more and more important in the spacecrafts. Due to the nonlinear link, the switch operating with hysteresis control, the shunt regulator is a nonlinear system; however, the stability analysis method for the system is still grounded on the approximate linearization method, which neglects some of the ac and dc characteristics. In this paper, a novel stability analysis method for the nonlinear systems is proposed based on the describing function, which can be used to model the nonlinear link in the shunt regulator system. Further, the different conclusion of the shunt regulator system stability are drawn, by the approximate linearization method and the stability analysis method proposed in this paper, respectively. Finally, the simulation and experimental results prove the correctness of the stability analysis method with describing function and discover the incompletion of the approximate linearization methods on the stability analysis. Frequency synthesizer is a key component used in electronic systems. Two important features for judging its performance are frequency granularity and frequency switching speed. In this paper, a synthesizer built on the principle of time-average-frequency (TAF) is implemented on an FPGA system. The synthesizer is constructed entirely on the FPGA's configurable elements. The granularity is measured as 2 ppb; the frequency switching speed is experimentally illustrated as two cycles. The configuration of the synthesizer can be adjusted in the field for accommodating various performance versus cost scenarios. The aim of this paper is to provide a field-programmable frequency generator as a handy tool to FPGA users, to enable user create innovations at application level. In this paper, a cascaded H-Bridge (CHB)-multilevel converter (MC)-based photovoltaic (PV) system with no voltage or current sensors at the dc-side is proposed. Eliminating the dc-side sensors simplifies the hardware, leading to lower cost and higher reliability of the PV system. A novel scheme estimating the capacitors’ voltages from the ac output voltage of the inverter is developed. The scheme allows replacing all dc-side voltage sensors by a single-voltage sensor at the ac-side of the converter. Furthermore, the dc current sensors, conventionally required for the maximum power point tracking (MPPT), are also eliminated. Instead, the outputs from the capacitors’ voltage control systems are utilized for the MPPT. AC–DC–AC converter-fed induction motor (IM) drive is mainly realized by back-to-back three-phase converters. However, fault in a single semiconductor switch will make it inoperative. To enable continued controllable operation in case of the faults occurring in the converter, the five-leg converter with a shared leg between the grid and load sides is a possible solution. However, this topology poses an inherent two-objective control problem, because its grid and load sides should be controlled simultaneously. More importantly, the potential increase of the shared-leg current may destroy the converters. In this paper, a new control scheme based on the FCS-MPC combined with intrinsic characteristic of the five-leg converter is proposed for independent control of the rectifier and inverter subsystem with the shared-leg overcurrent constraint. The condition for independent control is analyzed. In order to give a complete evaluation of the proposed control scheme, the conventional pulsewidth modulation (PWM) control scheme is conducted for comparison. This paper presents a new and simple finite-control set model predictive control strategy to reduce the torque ripple in permanent-magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs). The method is based on minimizing a cost function that considers the flux linkage torque harmonics obtained from a discrete-time model of the machine. The power converter switching state that minimizes this cost function is selected and applied during a whole sampling period. Additionally, it is proposed to mitigate the other source of torque ripple, known as cogging-torque, using a feed-forward signal applied to the torque control loop. A hybrid method that uses the output information from an observer and look-up table is presented to obtain a good cogging-torque estimation and thus an accurate mitigation of this disturbance torque at low rotational speed. This paper addresses theoretical calculation of a single-phase multilevel pulsewidth modulation (PWM) inverter current total harmonic distortion (THD). Analytical approach introduced in late 1980s for a two-level inverter is generalized for an arbitrary level count for a single-phase inverter. Although the obtained closed-form piecewise analytical solutions assume (infinitely) large ratio of switching and fundamental frequencies and pure inductive load, they are practically very accurate for the ratios of (apparent) switching and fundamental frequencies larger than 25–30 and inductance-dominated loads. Along with strict mathematical solutions, simple accurate Bessel function approximation and hyperbolic average trend one are suggested. The formulas clearly reveal a single-phase PWM inverter current THD dependence on modulation index for an arbitrary voltage level count and are easily modified to cover grid-connected cases. A dual two-level voltage source inverter (VSI) can synthesize a three-level voltage space vector employing an open-end winding induction motor. Space-vector-based pulsewidth modulation (PWM) variants for this dual VSI are proposed in this paper that offer the dual advantage of limiting the switching power loss to a single VSI at all instants and also reducing the switching commutations in the dual VSI by 50%. The influence of different error volt seconds (affected with different PWM variants) on the motor phase current in the dual VSI is critically analyzed. To this end, two analytical approaches (one using error-voltage trajectory information and the other using switching state information of the dual VSI) are also proposed in this paper to predict the current trajectory and the ripple content in the drive system. Expressions for rms ripple current are developed with different PWM variants. The efficacy of the proposed analytical approaches to predict the current trajectory and the ripple content is confirmed from the experimental results. All the PWM variants are first simulated using MATLAB and verified experimentally by conducting tests on a three-phase open-end winding induction motor drive controlled with volts per hertz control. To reduce the common-mode voltage (CMV) and eliminate the CMV spikes for two-level voltage source inverters (2L-VSIs), an improved model predictive control (MPC) based CMV reduction method is proposed in this paper considering dead-time effects. First, an improved voltage vector (VV) preselection strategy is proposed to reduce the CMV spikes caused by the dead time. Second, a new hybrid VV preselection strategy based on a delay compensation strategy and a modified current sector division strategy is proposed to completely eliminate the CMV spikes. As the proposed hybrid VV preselection based MPC strategy makes full use of the six nonzero VVs of the 2L-VSI, the current total harmonic distortions and ripples are reduced. Multilevel inverters are now-a-days being applied in electric vehicles (EV). Considering the dynamic operating conditions of an EV propelled by an induction motor, this paper proposes a flexible discontinuous modulation strategy for three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter that can shift modulation pattern seamlessly from sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation (SPWM) to discontinuous PWM (DPWM). The modulation scheme is generalized at each degree of discontinuity to ensure minimum switching losses for variable load power factors. Additionally, a hybrid voltage balancing strategy, which comprises two sets of compensating offset signals with complementary features, has been introduced to mitigate voltage deviation problem at neutral point of the inverter. The unique feature of the proposed hybrid balancing approach is that it generates uniform compensating neutral current regardless of the level of discontinuity. This results in identical and predictable voltage balancing dynamics for the entire modulation transition covering SPWM and DPWM. It has been shown that the proposed hybrid balancing strategy does not lose its unbalance compensation strength even during transition from one modulation pattern to another. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme for wide variations in operating conditions is studied through extensive simulation, and validated in experimentation using a prototype NPC inverter with induction motor loads. This paper presents research results of voltage gain number control methods of a power electronic resonant zero-current switching dc–dc switched-capacitor (SC) voltage multiplier (SCVM) in a topology with fault tolerance capability (FSCVM). The converters operated under the basic switching patterns are constant-voltage-gain dc–dc series-parallel resonant SC converters. However, this paper presents a method for the output voltage regulation by a special switching strategy. A variable voltage gain is made possible by selecting the number of active switching cells, using an appropriate control method. This creates a set of voltage ratio ranges. In addition, the proposed topology and method of control enable a fault-tolerant operation of the FSCVM under various failures of the device. The paper presents an analysis of the concept, simulation results and an experimental verification in a three-cell FSCVM dc–dc resonant boost converter operating at a 200-watt charge. This paper presents an average dwell-time method for fault-tolerant control of a class of uncertain switched linear time-delay systems and also designs an algorithm to determine the parameters pertaining to the dwell-time condition. Compared to the literature results, this paper features the following: 1) the proposed method is independent of switching polices if switchings are slow enough in the average sense; 2) the proposed control design guarantees exponential stabilization of this class of time-delay linear systems with actuator faults; and 3) this method treats all actuators in a unified manner without a need to identify which are faulty or healthy actuators. This paper proposes a new developed switched-capacitor converter to achieve high-voltage pulses with adjustable voltage level and frequency. The proposed topology generates repetitive high-voltage pulses by using low-voltage power supply with reduced number of components, including power semiconductors and capacitor. Therefore, a converter based on switched-capacitor units with high voltage gain and high efficiency can be achieved. Operation principles and design steps of the converter as well as comparative study with conventional converters are described in this paper. This paper presents two capacitor voltage balancing (CVB) strategies for modular multilevel converter (MMC) applications. Both balancing schemes are based on model predictive control and are designed to efficiently solve a constrained optimal control problem, where the predicted capacitor voltage errors are included in the cost function with the demanded output voltage of a cluster being forced through an equality constraint. The first method proposed in this paper computes specific modulation indexes for each module using the explicit solution of a relaxed version of the original optimization problem. The second approach proposed in this paper reduces the complexity of the original problem by linearizing the objective function and using an optimal sorting network based on a greedy algorithm to solve this approximation. Considering the structures of both solution approaches, they are integrated into modulation schemes based on phase-shifted and level-shifted pulsewidth modulation algorithms, respectively. Experimental results obtained from a nine-cell single-phase MMC prototype demonstrate the good performance achieved with the proposed methodologies, as well as the implementation simplicity offered by the proposed CVB algorithms. Induction motor drives operated with a low ratio of the switching frequency to the fundamental frequency (i.e., pulse number) are prone to have high magnitudes of low-order torque harmonics. This paper proposes a method to analytically evaluate the harmonic torque spectrum based on the pulsewidth-modulated voltage waveforms for low pulse number operation. The predicted torque harmonic spectra for different pulsewidth-modulated waveforms are validated through simulations and experiments. This paper also reports optimal switching angles to minimize the total rms value of torque harmonics of order 6, 12, 18 $,\dots,$ $6(N-1)$ , considering the number of switching angles per quarter ($N$) to be 4 and 5. Compared to sine triangle pulsewidth modulation and selective harmonic elimination pulsewidth modulation with the same pulse number, the proposed optimal switching angles significantly reduce the total rms value of all harmonic torques of order lower than $6N$. Extensive simulation and experimental results on a 3.7-kW induction motor drive are presented to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed optimal pulsewidth modulation.
