Edge detection is a useful task in low-level image processing. The efficiency of many image processing and computer vision tasks depends on the perfection of detecting meaningful edges. To get a meaningful edge, thresholding is almost inevitable in any edge detection algorithm. Many algorithms reported in the literature adopt ad hoc schemes for this purpose. These algorithms re- quire the threshold values to be supplied and tuned by the user. There are many high-level tasks in computer vision which are to be performed without human intervention. Thus, there is a need to develop a scheme where a single set of threshold values would give acceptable results for many color images. In this paper, an attempt has been made to devise such an algorithm. Statistical variability of partial derivatives at each pixel is used to obtain standardized edge magnitude and is thresholded using two threshold values. This paper presents a unified framework for the creation of classified maps of the seafloor from sonar imagery. Significant challenges in photometric correction, classification, navigation and registration, and image fusion are addressed. The techniques described are directly applicable to a range of remote sensing problems. Recent advances in side-scan data correction are incorporated to compensate for the sonar beam pattern and motion of the acquisition platform. The corrected images are segmented using pixel-based textural features and standard classifiers. In parallel, the navigation of the sonar device is processed using Kalman filtering techniques. A simultaneous localization and mapping framework is adopted to improve the navigation accuracy and produce georeferenced mosaics of the segmented side-scan data. These are fused within a Markovian framework and two fusion models are presented. The first uses a voting scheme regularized by an isotropic Markov random field and is applicable when the reliability of each information source is unknown. The Markov model is also used to inpaint regions where no final classification decision can be reached using pixel level fusion. The second model formally introduces the reliability of each information source into a probabilistic model. Evaluation of the two models using both synthetic images and real data from a large scale survey shows significant quantitative and qualitative improvement using the fusion approach. In this paper, we establish the exact relationship between the continuous and the discrete phase difference of two shifted images, and show that their discrete phase difference is a two-dimensional sawtooth signal. Subpixel registration can, thus, be performed directly in the Fourier domain by counting the number of cycles of the phase difference matrix along each frequency axis. The subpixel portion is given by the noninteger fraction of the last cycle along each axis. The problem is formulated as an overdetermined homogeneous quadratic cost function under rank constraint for the phase difference, and the shape constraint for the filter that computes the group delay. The optimal tradeoff for imposing the constraints is determined using the method of generalized cross validation. Also, in order to robustify the solution, we assume a mixture model of inlying and outlying estimated shifts and truncate our quadratic cost function using expectation maximization. Prior knowledge of the noise present in a color image acquisition device is very important in estimating colorimetric values or in recovering the spectral reflectances of pixels of objects being imaged, since these values are greatly influenced by the noise. In this paper, a new model is proposed for the determination of the noise variance of a multispectral color image acquisition system and experimental results to demonstrate its accuracy are presented. It is demonstrated that the noise variance of an actual multispectral color image acquisition system computed by the proposal agrees fairly well with the variance which minimizes the mean-square error of the recovered reflectances by the Wiener filter. As an application of the proposal, it is shown that spectral reflectances of an art painting are recovered accurately by the use of sensor responses without prior knowledge of objects being imaged and noise present in an image acquisition system. A computer vision-based system using images from an airborne aircraft can increase flight safety by aiding the pilot to detect obstacles in the flight path so as to avoid mid-air collisions. Such a system fits naturally with the development of an external vision system proposed by NASA for use in high-speed civil transport aircraft with limited cockpit visibility. The detection techniques should provide high detection probability for obstacles that can vary from subpixels to a few pixels in size, while maintaining a low false alarm probability in the presence of noise and severe background clutter. Furthermore, the detection algorithms must be able to report such obstacles in a timely fashion, imposing severe constraints on their execution time. For this purpose, we have implemented a number of algorithms to detect airborne obstacles using image sequences obtained from a camera mounted on an aircraft. This paper describes the methodology used for characterizing the performance of the dynamic programming obstacle detection algorithm and its special cases. The experimental results were obtained using several types of image sequences, with simulated and real backgrounds. The approximate performance of the algorithm is also theoretically derived using principles of statistical analysis in terms of the signal-to-noise ration (SNR) required for the probabilities of false alarms and misdetections to be lower than prespecified values. Removing or reducing impulse noise is a very active research area in image processing. In this paper we describe a new algorithm that is especially developed for reducing all kinds of impulse noise: fuzzy impulse noise detection and reduction method (FIDRM). It can also be applied to images having a mixture of impulse noise and other types of noise. The result is an image quasi without (or with very little) impulse noise so that other filters can be used afterwards. This nonlinear filtering technique contains two separated steps: an impulse noise detection step and a reduction step that preserves edge sharpness. Based on the concept of fuzzy gradient values, our detection method constructs a fuzzy set impulse noise. This fuzzy set is represented by a membership function that will be used by the filtering method, which is a fuzzy averaging of neighboring pixels. Experimental results show that FIDRM provides a significant improvement on other existing filters. In image-based relighting, a pixel is associated with a number of sampled radiance values. This paper presents a two-level compression method. In the first level, the plenoptic property of a pixel is approximated by a spherical radial basis function (SRBF) network. That means that the spherical plenoptic function of each pixel is represented by a number of SRBF weights. In the second level, we apply a wavelet-based method to compress these SRBF weights. To reduce the visual artifact due to quantization noise, we develop a constrained method for estimating the SRBF weights. Our proposed approach is superior to JPEG, JPEG2000, and MPEG. Compared with the spherical harmonics approach, our approach has a lower complexity, while the visual quality is comparable. The classic signal quantization problem was introduced by Lloyd. We formulate another, similar problem: The optimal mapping of digital fine grayscale images (such as 9-13 bits-per-pixel medical images) to a coarser scale (e.g., 8 bits per pixel on conventional computer monitors). While the former problem is defined basically in the real signal domain with smoothly distributed noise, the latter refers to an essentially digital domain. As we show in this paper, it is this difference that makes the classic quantization methods virtually inapplicable in typical cases of requantization of the already digitized images. For a conventional downscaling video transcoder, a video server has firstly to decompress the video, perform downscaling operations in the pixel domain, and then recompress it. This is computationally intensive. However, it is difficult to perform video downscaling in the discrete cosine transform (DCT)-domain since the prediction errors of each frame are computed from its immediate past higher resolution frames. Recently, a fast algorithm for DCT domain image downsampling has been proposed to obtain the downsampled version of DCT coefficients with low computational complexity. However, there is a mismatch between the downsampled version of DCT coefficients and the resampled motion vectors. In other words, significant quality degradation is introduced when the derivation of the original motion vectors and the resampled motion vector is large. In this paper, we propose a new architecture to obtain resampled DCT coefficients in the DCT domain by using the split and merge technique. Using our proposed video transcoder architecture, a macroblock is splitted into two regions: dominant region and the boundary region. The dominant region of the macroblock can be transcoded in the DCT domain with low computational complexity and re-encoding error can be avoided. By transcoding the boundary region adaptively, low computational complexity can also be achieved. More importantly, the re-encoding error introduced in the boundary region can be con- trolled more dynamically. Experimental results show that our proposed video downscaling transcoder can lead to significant computational savings as well as videos with high quality as compared with the conventional approach.
