A common problem in wide-baseline matching is the sparse and non-uniform distribution of correspondences when using conventional detectors, such as SIFT, SURF, FAST, A-KAZE, and MSER. In this paper, we introduce a novel segmentation-based feature detector (SFD) that produces an increased number of accurate features for wide-baseline matching. A multi-scale SFD is proposed using bilateral image decomposition to produce a large number of scale-invariant features for wide-baseline reconstruction. All input images are over-segmented into regions using any existing segmentation technique, such as Watershed, Mean-shift, and simple linear iterative clustering. Feature points are then detected at the intersection of the boundaries of three or more regions. The detected feature points are local maxima of the image function. The key advantage of feature detection based on segmentation is that it does not require global threshold setting and can, therefore, detect features throughout the image. A comprehensive evaluation demonstrates that SFD gives an increased number of features that are accurately localized and matched between wide-baseline camera views; the number of features for a given matching error increases by a factor of 3–5 compared with SIFT; feature detection and matching performance are maintained with increasing baseline between views; multi-scale SFD improves matching performance at varying scales. Application of SFD to sparse multi-view wide-baseline reconstruction demonstrates a factor of 10 increases in the number of reconstructed points with improved scene coverage compared with SIFT/MSER/A-KAZE. Image mosaicking applications require both geometrical and photometrical registrations between the images that compose the mosaic. This paper proposes a probabilistic color correction algorithm for correcting the photometrical disparities. First, the image to be color corrected is segmented into several regions using mean shift. Then, connected regions are extracted using a region fusion algorithm. Local joint image histograms of each region are modeled as collections of truncated Gaussians using a maximum likelihood estimation procedure. Then, local color palette mapping functions are computed using these sets of Gaussians. The color correction is performed by applying those functions to all the regions of the image. An extensive comparison with ten other state of the art color correction algorithms is presented, using two different image pair data sets. This paper considers the problem of image segmentation using the random walker algorithm. In the case of 3D images, the method uses an extreme amount of memory and time resources. These are required in order to represent the corresponding enormous image graph and to solve the resulting sparse linear system. Having in mind these limitations, this paper proposes techniques for the optimization of the random walker approach. The optimization is obtained by processing supervoxels representing homogeneous image regions rather than single voxels. A fast and efficient method for supervoxel determination is introduced. A method for the creation of an image adjacency graph from an irregular grid of supervoxels is also proposed. The results of applying the introduced approach to segmentation of 3D CT data sets are presented and compared with the results of the original random walker approach and other state-of-the-art methods. The accuracy and the computational overhead is regarded in the comparison. The analysis of results shows that the modified method can be successfully applied for the segmentation of volumetric images and provides results in a reasonable time without a significant loss in the image segmentation accuracy. Face hallucination or super-resolution is a practical application of general image super-resolution which has been recently studied by many researchers. The challenge of good face hallucination comes from a variety of poses, illuminations, facial expressions, and other degradations. In many proposed methods, researchers resolve it by using a generative neural network to reduce the perceptual loss so we can generate a photo-realistic image. The problem is that researchers usually overlook the fidelity of the super-resolved image which could affect further facial image processing. Meanwhile, many CNN based approaches cascade multiple networks to extract facial prior information to improve super-resolution quality. Because of the end-to-end design, the details are missing for investigation. In this paper, we combine new techniques in convolutional neural network and random forests to a Hierarchical CNN based Random Forests (HCRF) approach for face super-resolution in a coarse-to-fine manner. In the proposed approach, we focus on a general approach that can handle facial images with various conditions without pre-processing. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper that combines the advantages of deep learning with random forests for face super-resolution. To achieve superior performance, we propose two novel CNN models for coarse facial image super-resolution and segmentation and then apply new random forests to target on local facial features refinement making use of the segmentation results. Extensive benchmark experiments on subjective and objective evaluation show that HCRF can achieve comparable speed and competitive performance compared with state-of-the-art super-resolution approaches for very low-resolution images. Video object segmentation (VOS) is important for various computer vision problems, and handling it with minimal human supervision is highly desired for the large-scale applications. To bring down the supervision, existing approaches largely follow a data mining perspective by assuming the availability of multiple videos sharing the same object categories. It, however, would be problematic for the tasks that consume a single video. To address this problem, this paper proposes a novel approach that explores weakly labeled images to solve video object segmentation. Given a video labeled with a target category, images labeled with the same category are collected, from which noisy object exemplars are automatically discovered. After that the proposed approach extracts a set of region proposals on various frames and efficiently matches them with massive noisy exemplars in terms of appearance and spatial context. We then jointly select the best proposals across the video by solving a novel submodular problem that combines region voting and global region matching. Finally, the localization results are leveraged as strong supervision to guide pixel-level segmentation. Extensive experiments are conducted on two challenging public databases: Youtube-Objects and DAVIS. The results suggest that the proposed approach improves over previous weakly supervised/unsupervised approaches significantly, showing a performance even comparable with the several approaches supervised by the costly manual segmentations. Object skeletons are useful for object representation and object detection. They are complementary to the object contour, and provide extra information, such as how object scale (thickness) varies among object parts. But object skeleton extraction from natural images is very challenging, because it requires the extractor to be able to capture both local and non-local image context in order to determine the scale of each skeleton pixel. In this paper, we present a novel fully convolutional network with multiple scale-associated side outputs to address this problem. By observing the relationship between the receptive field sizes of the different layers in the network and the skeleton scales they can capture, we introduce two scale-associated side outputs to each stage of the network. The network is trained by multi-task learning, where one task is skeleton localization to classify whether a pixel is a skeleton pixel or not, and the other is skeleton scale prediction to regress the scale of each skeleton pixel. Supervision is imposed at different stages by guiding the scale-associated side outputs toward the ground-truth skeletons at the appropriate scales. The responses of the multiple scale-associated side outputs are then fused in a scale-specific way to detect skeleton pixels using multiple scales effectively. Our method achieves promising results on two skeleton extraction datasets, and significantly outperforms other competitors. Driven by recent vision and graphics applications such as image segmentation and object recognition, computing pixel-accurate saliency values to uniformly highlight foreground objects becomes increasingly important. In this paper, we propose a unified framework called pixelwise image saliency aggregating (PISA) various bottom-up cues and priors. It generates spatially coherent yet detail-preserving, pixel-accurate, and fine-grained saliency, and overcomes the limitations of previous methods, which use homogeneous superpixel based and color only treatment. PISA aggregates multiple saliency cues in a global context, such as complementary color and structure contrast measures, with their spatial priors in the image domain. The saliency confidence is further jointly modeled with a neighborhood consistence constraint into an energy minimization formulation, in which each pixel will be evaluated with multiple hypothetical saliency levels. Instead of using global discrete optimization methods, we employ the cost-volume filtering technique to solve our formulation, assigning the saliency levels smoothly while preserving the edge-aware structure details. In addition, a faster version of PISA is developed using a gradient-driven image subsampling strategy to greatly improve the runtime efficiency while keeping comparable detection accuracy. Extensive experiments on a number of public data sets suggest that PISA convincingly outperforms other state-of-the-art approaches. Serving as an essential step for many applications of image processing, superpixel generation has attracted a lot of attentions. Most existing superpixel generation algorithms focus on the boundary adherence and compactness of the superpixels, but ignore the topological consistency between the superpixels, which severely limites their applications in the subsequent tasks, especially in the CNN based image processing tasks. In this paper, we present a fast lattice superpixel generation algorithm, which can generate superpixels with lattice topology like the original pixels. We also propose a local similarity loss function to improve the segmentation accuracy of the generated lattice superpixels. The whole algorithm is parallelly implemented on GPU. We perform extensive experiments on three datasets (i.e., BSDS500, NYUv2 and VOC) to verify the efficacy of our algorithm. Foreground and background cues can assist humans in quickly understanding visual scenes. In computer vision, however, it is difficult to detect salient objects when they touch the image boundary. Hence, detecting salient objects robustly under such circumstances without sacrificing precision and recall can be challenging. In this paper, we propose a novel model for salient region detection, namely, the foreground-center-background (FCB) saliency model. Its main highlights as follows. First, we use regional color volume as the foreground, together with perceptually uniform color differences within regions to detect salient regions. This can highlight salient objects robustly, even when they touched the image boundary, without greatly sacrificing precision and recall. Second, we employ center saliency to detect salient regions together with foreground and background cues, which improves saliency detection performance. Finally, we propose a novel and simple yet efficient method that combines foreground, center, and background saliency. Experimental validation with three well-known benchmark data sets indicates that the FCB model outperforms several state-of-the-art methods in terms of precision, recall, F-measure, and particularly, the mean absolute error. Extracting the pixel-level 3D layout from a single image is important for different applications, such as object localization, image, and video categorization. Traditionally, the 3D layout is derived by solving a pixel-level classification problem. However, the image-level 3D structure can be very beneficial for extracting pixel-level 3D layout since it implies the way how pixels in the image are organized. In this paper, we propose an approach that first predicts the global image structure, and then we use the global structure for fine-grained pixel-level 3D layout extraction. In particular, image features are extracted based on multiple layout templates. We then learn a discriminative model for classifying the global layout at the image-level. Using latent variables, we implicitly model the sublevel semantics of the image, which enrich the expressiveness of our model. After the image-level structure is obtained, it is used as the prior knowledge to infer pixel-wise 3D layout. Experiments show that the results of our model outperform the state-of-the-art methods by 11.7% for 3D structure classification. The Hough transform is a popular technique used in the field of image processing and computer vision. With a Hough transform technique, not only the normal angle and distance of a line but also the line-segment’s length and midpoint (centroid) can be extracted by analysing the voting distribution around a peak in the Hough space. In this paper, a method based on minimum-entropy analysis is proposed to extract the set of parameters of a line segment. In each column around a peak in Hough space, the voting values specify probabilistic distributions. The corresponding entropies and statistical means are computed. The line-segment’s normal angle and length are simultaneously computed by fitting a quadratic polynomial curve to the voting entropies. The line-segment’s midpoint and normal distance are computed by fitting and interpolating a linear curve to the voting means. The proposed method is tested on simulated images for detection accuracy by providing comparative results. Experimental results on real-world images verify the method as well. Superpixel segmentation, as a central image processing task, has many applications in computer vision and computer graphics. Boundary alignment and shape compactness are leading indicators to evaluate a superpixel segmentation algorithm. Furthermore, convexity can make superpixels reflect more geometric structures in images and provide a more concise over-segmentation result. In this paper, we consider generating convex and compact superpixels while satisfying the constraints of adhering to the boundary as far as possible. We formulate the new superpixel segmentation into an edge-constrained centroidal power diagram (ECCPD) optimization problem. In the implementation, we optimize the superpixel configurations by repeatedly performing two alternative operations, which include site location updating and weight updating through a weight function defined by image features. Compared with existing superpixel methods, our method can partition an image into fully convex and compact superpixels with better boundary adherence. Extensive experimental results show that our approach outperforms existing superpixel segmentation methods in boundary alignment and compactness for generating convex superpixels. In this paper, we present a superpixel segmentation algorithm called linear spectral clustering (LSC), which is capable of producing superpixels with both high boundary adherence and visual compactness for natural images with low computational costs. In LSC, a normalized cuts-based formulation of image segmentation is adopted using a distance metric that measures both the color similarity and the space proximity between image pixels. However, rather than directly using the traditional eigen-based algorithm, we approximate the similarity metric through a deliberately designed kernel function such that pixel values can be explicitly mapped to a high-dimensional feature space. We then apply the conclusion that by appropriately weighting each point in this feature space, the objective functions of the weighted K-means and the normalized cuts share the same optimum points. Consequently, it is possible to optimize the cost function of the normalized cuts by iteratively applying simple K-means clustering in the proposed feature space. LSC possesses linear computational complexity and high memory efficiency, since it avoids both the decomposition of the affinity matrix and the generation of the large kernel matrix. By utilizing the underlying mathematical equivalence between the two types of seemingly different methods, LSC successfully preserves global image structures through efficient local operations. Experimental results show that LSC performs as well as or even better than the state-of-the-art superpixel segmentation algorithms in terms of several commonly used evaluation metrics in image segmentation. This paper presents a study of bilevel image similarity, including new objective metrics intended to quantify similarity consistent with human perception, and a subjective experiment to obtain ground truth for judging the performance of the objective similarity metrics. The focus is on scenic bilevel images, which are complex, natural or hand-drawn images, such as landscapes or portraits. The ground truth was obtained from ratings by 77 subjects of 44 distorted versions of seven scenic images, using a modified version of the SDSCE testing methodology. Based on hypotheses about human perception of bilevel images, several new metrics are proposed that outperform existing ones in the sense of attaining significantly higher Pearson and Spearman-rank correlation coefficients with respect to the ground truth from the subjective experiment. The new metrics include adjusted percentage error, bilevel local direction, and connected components comparison. Combinations of these metrics are also proposed, which exploit their complementarity to attain even better performance. These metrics and the ground truth are then used to assess the relative severity of various kinds of distortion and the performance of several lossy bilevel compression methods. In this paper, a visual attention model is incorporated for efficient saliency detection, and the salient regions are employed as object seeds for our automatic object segmentation system. In contrast with existing interactive segmentation approaches that require considerable user interaction, the proposed method does not require it, i.e., the segmentation task is fulfilled in a fully automatic manner. First, we introduce a novel unified spectral-domain approach for saliency detection. Our visual attention model originates from a well-known property of the human visual system that the human visual perception is highly adaptive and sensitive to structural information in images rather than nonstructural information. Then, based on the saliency map, we propose an iterative self-adaptive segmentation framework for more accurate object segmentation. Extensive tests on a variety of cluttered natural images show that the proposed algorithm is an efficient indicator for characterizing the human perception and it can provide satisfying segmentation performance. Polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) image segmentation is currently of great importance in image processing for remote sensing applications. However, it is a challenging task due to two main reasons. Firstly, the label information is difficult to acquire due to high annotation costs. Secondly, the speckle effect embedded in the PolSAR imaging process remarkably degrades the segmentation performance. To address these two issues, we present a contextual PolSAR image semantic segmentation method in this paper. With a newly defined channel-wise consistent feature set as input, the three-dimensional discrete wavelet transform (3D-DWT) technique is employed to extract discriminative multi-scale features that are robust to speckle noise. Then Markov random field (MRF) is further applied to enforce label smoothness spatially during segmentation. By simultaneously utilizing 3D-DWT features and MRF priors for the first time, contextual information is fully integrated during the segmentation to ensure accurate and smooth segmentation. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we conduct extensive experiments on three real benchmark PolSAR image data sets. This paper presents a new approach to recognizing vanishing-point-constrained building planes from a single image of street view. We first design a novel convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture that generates geometric segmentation of per-pixel orientations from a single street-view image. The network combines two-stream features of general visual cues and surface normals in gated convolution layers, and employs a deeply supervised loss that encapsulates multi-scale convolutional features. Our experiments on a new benchmark with fine-grained plane segmentations of real-world street views show that our network outperforms state-of-the-arts methods of both semantic and geometric segmentation. The pixel-wise segmentation exhibits coarse boundaries and discontinuities. We then propose to rectify the pixel-wise segmentation into perspectively-projected quads based on spatial proximity between the segmentation masks and exterior line segments detected through an image processing. The paper presents the results from a multi-year effort to develop and validate image processing methods for selecting the best physical models based on solar image observations. The approach consists of selecting the physical models based on their agreement with coronal holes extracted from the images. Ultimately, the goal is to use physical models to predict geomagnetic storms. We decompose the problem into three subproblems: (i) coronal hole segmentation based on physical constraints, (ii) matching clusters of coronal holes between different maps, and (iii) physical map classification. For segmenting coronal holes, we develop a multi-modal method that uses segmentation maps from three different methods to initialize a level-set method that evolves the initial coronal hole segmentation to the magnetic boundary. Then, we introduce a new method based on Linear Programming for matching clusters of coronal holes. The final matching is then performed using Random Forests. The methods were carefully validated using consensus maps derived from multiple readers, manual clustering, manual map classification, and method validation for 50 maps. The proposed multi-modal segmentation method significantly outperformed SegNet, U-net, Henney-Harvey, and FCN by providing accurate boundary detection. Delineation of curvilinear structures in images is an important basic step of several image processing applications, such as segmentation of roads or rivers in aerial images, vessels or staining membranes in medical images, and cracks in pavements and roads, among others. Existing methods suffer from insufficient robustness to noise. In this paper, we propose a novel operator for the detection of curvilinear structures in images, which we demonstrate to be robust to various types of noise and effective in several applications. We call it RUSTICO, which stands for RobUST Inhibition-augmented Curvilinear Operator. It is inspired by the push–pull inhibition in visual cortex and takes as input the responses of two trainable B-COSFIRE filters of opposite polarity. The output of RUSTICO consists of a magnitude map and an orientation map. We carried out experiments on a data set of synthetic stimuli with noise drawn from different distributions, as well as on several benchmark data sets of retinal fundus images, crack pavements, and aerial images and a new data set of rose bushes used for automatic gardening. We evaluated the performance of RUSTICO by a metric that considers the structural properties of line networks (connectivity, area, and length) and demonstrated that RUSTICO outperforms many existing methods with high statistical significance. There exist a significant number of benchmarks for evaluating the performance of boundary detection algorithms, most of them relying on some sort of comparison of the automatically-generated boundaries with human-labeled ones. Such benchmarks are composed of a representative image data set, as well as a comparison measure on the universe of boundary images. Despite many such data sets and measures have been proposed, there is no clear way of knowing which combinations of them are the most suitable for the task. In this paper, we introduce four criteria that allow for a sensible evaluation of the performance of a comparison measure on a given data set. The criteria mimic the way in which humans understand boundary images, as well as their ability to recognize the underlying scenes. These criteria can, as a final goal, quantify the ability of the boundary detection benchmarks to evaluate the performance of boundary detection methods, either edge-based or segmentation-based. Curvilinear structure restoration in image processing procedures is a difficult task, which can be compounded when these structures are thin, i.e., when their smallest dimension is close to the resolution of the sensor. Many recent restoration methods involve considering a local gradient-based regularization term as prior, assuming gradient sparsity. An isotropic gradient operator is typically not suitable for thin curvilinear structures, since gradients are not sparse for these. In this paper, we propose a mixed gradient operator that combines a standard gradient in the isotropic image regions, and a directional gradient in the regions where specific orientations are likely. In particular, such information can be provided by curvilinear structure detectors (e.g., RORPO or Frangi filters). Our proposed mixed gradient operator, that can be viewed as a companion tool of such detectors, is proposed in a discrete framework and its formulation/computation holds in any dimension; in other words, it is valid in $\mathbb Z^{n}$ , ${n}\geq 1$. We show how this mixed gradient can be used to construct image priors that take edge orientation, as well as intensity, into account, and then involved in various image processing tasks while preserving curvilinear structures. The experiments carried out on 2D, 3D, real, and synthetic images illustrate the relevance of the proposed gradient, and its use in variational frameworks for both denoising and segmentation tasks. Random walk is a popular and efficient algorithm for image segmentation, especially for extracting regions of interest (ROIs). One difficulty with the random walk algorithm is the requirement for solving a huge sparse linear system when applied to large images. Another limitation is its sensitivity to seeds distribution, i.e., the segmentation result depends on the number of seeds as well as their placement, which puts a burden on users. In this paper, we first propose a continuous random walk model with explicit coherence regularization (CRWCR) for the extracted ROI, which helps to reduce the seeds sensitivity, so as to reduce the user interactions. Then, a very efficient algorithm to solve the CRWCR model will be developed, which helps to remove the difficulty of solving huge linear systems. Our algorithm consists of two stages: initialization by performing one-dimensional random walk sweeping based on user-provided seeds, followed by the alternating direction scheme, i.e., Peaceman–Rachford scheme for further correction. The first stage aims to provide a good initial guess for the ROI, and it is very fast since we just solve a limited number of one-dimensional random walk problems. Then, this initial guess is evolved to the ideal solution by applying the second stage, which should also be very efficient since it fits well for GPU computing, and 10 iterations are usually sufficient for convergence. Many recent ultrasound image processing methods are based on patch comparison, such as filtering and segmentation. Identifying similar patches in noise-corrupted images is a key factor for the performance of these methods. While the Euclidean distance is ideal to handle the patch comparison under additive Gaussian noise, finding good measures to compare patches corrupted by multiplicative noise is still an open research. In this paper, we deduce several new geodesic distances, arising from parametric probabilistic spaces, and suggest them as similarity measures to process RF and log-compressed ultrasound images in patch-based methods. Recent advances in object detection have led to the development of segmentation by detection approaches that integrate top-down geometric priors for multiclass object segmentation. A key yet under-addressed issue in utilizing top-down cues for the problem of multiclass object segmentation by detection is efficiently generating robust and accurate geometric priors. In this paper, we propose a random geometric prior forest scheme to obtain object-adaptive geometric priors efficiently and robustly. In the scheme, a testing object first searches for training neighbors with similar geometries using the random geometric prior forest, and then the geometry of the testing object is reconstructed by linearly combining the geometries of its neighbors. Our scheme enjoys several favorable properties when compared with conventional methods. First, it is robust and very fast because its inference does not suffer from bad initializations, poor local minimums or complex optimization. Second, the figure/ground geometries of training samples are utilized in a multitask manner. Third, our scheme is object-adaptive but does not require the labeling of parts or poselets, and thus, it is quite easy to implement. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, we integrate the obtained top-down geometric priors with conventional bottom-up color cues in the frame of graph cut. The proposed random geometric prior forest achieves the best segmentation results of all of the methods tested on VOC2010/2012 and is 90 times faster than the current state-of-the-art method. Salient contour detection can benefit from the integration of both contour cues and region cues. However, this task is difficult due to different nature of region representations and contour representations. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an energy minimization framework based on winding number constraints. In this framework, both region cues, such as color/texture homogeneity, and contour cues, such as local contrast and continuity, are represented in a joint objective function, which has both region and contour labels. The key problem is how to design constraints that ensure the topological consistency of the two kinds of labels. Our technique is based on the topological concept of winding number. Using a fast method for winding number computation, a small number of linear constraints are derived to ensure label consistency. Our method is instantiated by ratio-based energy functions. This paper presents a fast and robust level set method for image segmentation. To enhance the robustness against noise, we embed a Markov random field (MRF) energy function to the conventional level set energy function. This MRF energy function builds the correlation of a pixel with its neighbors and encourages them to fall into the same region. To obtain a fast implementation of the MRF embedded level set model, we explore algebraic multigrid (AMG) and sparse field method (SFM) to increase the time step and decrease the computation domain, respectively. Both AMG and SFM can be conducted in a parallel fashion, which facilitates the processing of our method for big image databases. By comparing the proposed fast and robust level set method with the standard level set method and its popular variants on noisy synthetic images, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, medical images, and natural images, we comprehensively demonstrate the new method is robust against various kinds of noises. In particular, the new level set method can segment an image of size $500 \times 500$ within 3 s on MATLAB R2010b installed in a computer with 3.30-GHz CPU and 4-GB memory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The robust detection of small targets is one of the key techniques in infrared search and tracking applications. A novel small target detection method in a single infrared image is proposed in this paper. Initially, the traditional infrared image model is generalized to a new infrared patch-image model using local patch construction. Then, because of the non-local self-correlation property of the infrared background image, based on the new model small target detection is formulated as an optimization problem of recovering low-rank and sparse matrices, which is effectively solved using stable principle component pursuit. Finally, a simple adaptive segmentation method is used to segment the target image and the segmentation result can be refined by post-processing. Extensive synthetic and real data experiments show that under different clutter backgrounds the proposed method not only works more stably for different target sizes and signal-to-clutter ratio values, but also has better detection performance compared with conventional baseline methods. Multilevel thresholding amounts to segmenting a gray-level image into several distinct regions. This paper presents a 2D histogram based multilevel thresholding approach to improve the separation between objects. Recent studies indicate that the results obtained with 2D histogram oriented approaches are superior to those obtained with 1D histogram based techniques in the context of bi-level thresholding. Here, a method to incorporate 2D histogram related information for generalized multilevel thresholding is proposed using the maximum Tsallis entropy. Differential evolution (DE), a simple yet efficient evolutionary algorithm of current interest, is employed to improve the computational efficiency of the proposed method. The performance of DE is investigated extensively through comparison with other well-known nature inspired global optimization techniques such as genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimization, artificial bee colony, and simulated annealing. Linear spectral unmixing is a challenging problem in hyperspectral imaging that consists of decomposing an observed pixel into a linear combination of pure spectra (or endmembers) with their corresponding proportions (or abundances). Endmember extraction algorithms can be employed for recovering the spectral signatures while abundances are estimated using an inversion step. Recent works have shown that exploiting spatial dependencies between image pixels can improve spectral unmixing. Markov random fields (MRF) are classically used to model these spatial correlations and partition the image into multiple classes with homogeneous abundances. This paper proposes to define the MRF sites using similarity regions. These regions are built using a self-complementary area filter that stems from the morphological theory. This kind of filter divides the original image into flat zones where the underlying pixels have the same spectral values. Once the MRF has been clearly established, a hierarchical Bayesian algorithm is proposed to estimate the abundances, the class labels, the noise variance, and the corresponding hyperparameters. A hybrid Gibbs sampler is constructed to generate samples according to the corresponding posterior distribution of the unknown parameters and hyperparameters. The state-of-the-art interactive image segmentation algorithms are sensitive to the user inputs and often unable to produce an accurate boundary with a small amount of user interaction. They frequently rely on laborious user editing to refine the segmentation boundary. In this paper, we propose a robust and accurate interactive method based on the recently developed continuous-domain convex active contour model. The proposed method exhibits many desirable properties of an effective interactive image segmentation algorithm, including robustness to user inputs and different initializations, the ability to produce a smooth and accurate boundary contour, and the ability to handle topology changes. The aim of this paper is to describe a novel and completely automated technique for carotid artery (CA) recognition, far (distal) wall segmentation, and intima–media thickness (IMT) measurement, which is a strong clinical tool for risk assessment for cardiovascular diseases. The architecture of completely automated multiresolution edge snapper (CAMES) consists of the following two stages: 1) automated CA recognition based on a combination of scale–space and statistical classification in a multiresolution framework and 2) automated segmentation of lumen–intima (LI) and media–adventitia (MA) interfaces for the far (distal) wall and IMT measurement. Our database of 365 B-mode longitudinal carotid images is taken from four different institutions covering different ethnic backgrounds. The ground-truth (GT) database was the average manual segmentation from three clinical experts. The mean distance \pm standard deviation of CAMES with respect to GT profiles for LI and MA interfaces were 0.081 \pm 0.099 and 0.082 \pm 0.197 mm, respectively. The IMT measurement error between CAMES and GT was 0.078 \pm 0.112 mm. CAMES was benchmarked against a previously developed automated technique based on an integrated approach using feature-based extraction and classifier (CALEX). Although CAMES underestimated the IMT value, it had shown a strong improvement in segmentation errors against CALEX for LI and MA interfaces by 8% and 42%, respectively. The overall IMT measurement bias for CAMES improved by 36% against CALEX. Finally, this paper demonstrated that the figure-of-merit of CAMES was 95.8% compared with 87.4% for CALEX. The combination of multiresolution CA recognition and far-wall segmentation led to an automated, low-complexity, real-time, and accurate technique for carotid IMT measurement. Validation on a multiethnic/multi-institutional data set demonstrated the robustness of the technique, which can constitute a clinically valid IMT measurement for assistance in atherosclerosis disease management. A new formulation of active contours based on explicit functions has been recently suggested. This novel framework allows real-time 3-D segmentation since it reduces the dimensionality of the segmentation problem. In this paper, we propose a B-spline formulation of this approach, which further improves the computational efficiency of the algorithm. We also show that this framework allows evolving the active contour using local region-based terms, thereby overcoming the limitations of the original method while preserving computational speed. Computers are developing along with a new trend from the dual-core and quad-core processors to ones with tens or even hundreds of cores. Multimedia, as one of the most important applications in computers, has an urgent need to design parallel coding algorithms for compression. Taking intraframe/image coding as a start point, this paper proposes a pure line-by-line coding scheme (LBLC) to meet the need. In LBLC, an input image is processed line by line sequentially, and each line is divided into small fixed-length segments. The compression of all segments from prediction to entropy coding is completely independent and concurrent at many cores. Results on a general-purpose computer show that our scheme can get a 13.9 times speedup with 15 cores at the encoder and a 10.3 times speedup at the decoder. Ideally, such near-linear speeding relation with the number of cores can be kept for more than 100 cores. In addition to the high parallelism, the proposed scheme can perform comparatively or even better than the H.264 high profile above middle bit rates. At near-lossless coding, it outperforms H.264 more than 10 dB. At lossless coding, up to 14% bit-rate reduction is observed compared with H.264 lossless coding at the high 4:4:4 profile. In this paper, we introduce a method to detect co-saliency from an image pair that may have some objects in common. The co-saliency is modeled as a linear combination of the single-image saliency map (SISM) and the multi-image saliency map (MISM). The first term is designed to describe the local attention, which is computed by using three saliency detection techniques available in literature. To compute the MISM, a co-multilayer graph is constructed by dividing the image pair into a spatial pyramid representation. Each node in the graph is described by two types of visual descriptors, which are extracted from a representation of some aspects of local appearance, e.g., color and texture properties. In order to evaluate the similarity between two nodes, we employ a normalized single-pair SimRank algorithm to compute the similarity score. In this paper, geometrical analysis is used to extract novel straight line segment features from the wings around the peaks of the Hough Transform (HT). Based on these features, a practical segment detection method is proposed which has the ability to determine complete straight line segment parameters including the location of the center, length, slope and the Euclidean distance to the origin. The proposed method does not rely on edge point verification in the image space, i.e., the complete set of segment features are determined only using the information embodied in the HT data. The proposed method can distinguish between highly collinear straight line segments. Segment detection is robust to disturbing edge points, especially ones collinear with the object. A predefined collinear segment resolution that provides a theoretical criterion to determine straight line contiguity is derived. In this paper, we propose an approach for tracking an object of interest based on 3-D range data. We employ particle filtering and active contours to simultaneously estimate the global motion of the object and its local deformations. The proposed algorithm takes advantage of range information to deal with the challenging (but common) situation in which the tracked object disappears from the image domain entirely and reappears later. To cope with this problem, a method based on principle component analysis (PCA) of shape information is proposed. In the proposed method, if the target disappears out of frame, shape similarity energy is used to detect target candidates that match a template shape learned online from previously observed frames. Thus, we require no a priori knowledge of the target's shape. Experimental results show the practical applicability and robustness of the proposed algorithm in realistic tracking scenarios. Intensity inhomogeneity often occurs in real-world images, which presents a considerable challenge in image segmentation. The most widely used image segmentation algorithms are region-based and typically rely on the homogeneity of the image intensities in the regions of interest, which often fail to provide accurate segmentation results due to the intensity inhomogeneity. This paper proposes a novel region-based method for image segmentation, which is able to deal with intensity inhomogeneities in the segmentation. First, based on the model of images with intensity inhomogeneities, we derive a local intensity clustering property of the image intensities, and define a local clustering criterion function for the image intensities in a neighborhood of each point. This local clustering criterion function is then integrated with respect to the neighborhood center to give a global criterion of image segmentation. In a level set formulation, this criterion defines an energy in terms of the level set functions that represent a partition of the image domain and a bias field that accounts for the intensity inhomogeneity of the image. Therefore, by minimizing this energy, our method is able to simultaneously segment the image and estimate the bias field, and the estimated bias field can be used for intensity inhomogeneity correction (or bias correction). Our method has been validated on synthetic images and real images of various modalities, with desirable performance in the presence of intensity inhomogeneities. Experiments show that our method is more robust to initialization, faster and more accurate than the well-known piecewise smooth model. Finding meaningful groupings of image primitives has been a long-standing problem in computer vision. This paper studies how salient groupings can be produced using established theories in the field of visual perception alone. The major contribution is a novel definition of the Gestalt principle of Prägnanz, based upon Koffka's definition that image descriptions should be both stable and simple. Our method is global in the sense that it operates over all primitives in an image at once. It works regardless of the type of image primitives and is generally independent of image properties such as intensity, color, and texture. A novel experiment is designed to quantitatively evaluate the groupings outputs by our method, which takes human disagreement into account and is generic to outputs of any grouper. We also demonstrate the value of our method in an image segmentation application and quantitatively show that segmentations deliver promising results when benchmarked using the Berkeley Segmentation Dataset (BSDS). Image segmentation plays an important role in computer vision and image analysis. In this paper, image segmentation is formulated as a labeling problem under a probability maximization framework. To estimate the label configuration, an iterative optimization scheme is proposed to alternately carry out the maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation and the maximum likelihood (ML) estimation. The MAP estimation problem is modeled with Markov random fields (MRFs) and a graph cut algorithm is used to find the solution to the MAP estimation. The ML estimation is achieved by computing the means of region features in a Gaussian model. Our algorithm can automatically segment an image into regions with relevant textures or colors without the need to know the number of regions in advance. Its results match image edges very well and are consistent with human perception. Comparing to six state-of-the-art algorithms, extensive experiments have shown that our algorithm performs the best. In this paper, an automatic histogram threshold approach based on a fuzziness measure is presented. This work is an improvement of an existing method. Using fuzzy logic concepts, the problems involved in finding the minimum of a criterion function are avoided. Similarity between gray levels is the key to find an optimal threshold. Two initial regions of gray levels, located at the boundaries of the histogram, are defined. Then, using an index of fuzziness, a similarity process is started to find the threshold point. Depending on implementation, active contours have been classified as geometric or parametric active contours. Parametric contours, irrespective of representation, are known to suffer from the problem of irregular bunching and spacing out of curve points during the curve evolution. In a spline-based implementation of active contours, this leads to occasional formation of loops locally, and subsequently the curve blows up due to instabilities. this paper, we analyze the reason for this problem and propose solution to alleviate the same. We propose an ordinary differential equation (ODE) for controlling the curve parametrization during evolution by including a tangential force. We show that the solution of the proposed ODE is bounded. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for segmentation and tracking tasks on closed as well as open contours. In this paper, we propose a novel solution to an arbitrary noncausal, multidimensional hidden Markov model (HMM) for image and video classification. First, we show that the noncausal model can be solved by splitting it into multiple causal HMMs and simultaneously solving each causal HMM using a fully synchronous distributed computing framework, therefore referred to as distributed HMMs. Next we present an approximate solution to the multiple causal HMMs that is based on an alternating updating scheme and assumes a realistic sequential computing framework. The parameters of the distributed causal HMMs are estimated by extending the classical 1-D training and classification algorithms to multiple dimensions. The proposed extension to arbitrary causal, multidimensional HMMs allows state transitions that are dependent on all causal neighbors. We, thus, extend three fundamental algorithms to multidimensional causal systems, i.e., 1) expectation-maximization (EM), 2) general forward-backward (GFB), and 3) Viterbi algorithms. In the simulations, we choose to limit ourselves to a noncausal 2-D model whose noncausality is along a single dimension, in order to significantly reduce the computational complexity. In this paper, we present two related multigrid algorithms for multiphase image segmentation. Algorithm I solves the model by Vese-Chan. We first generalize our recently developed multigrid method to this multiphase segmentation model (MG1); we also give a local Fourier analysis for the local smoother which leads to a new and more effective smoother. Although MG1 is found many magnitudes faster than the fast method of additive operator splitting (AOS), both algorithms are not robust with regard to the initial guess. To overcome this dependence on the initial guess, we consider a hierarchical segmentation model which achieves multiphase segmentation by repeated use of the Chan-Vese two-phase model; our Algorithm II solves this model by a multigrid algorithm (MG2). In this paper, we develop a new unified approach for laser radar range anomaly suppression, range profiling, and segmentation. This approach combines an object-based hybrid scene model for representing the range distribution of the field and a statistical mixture model for the range data measurement noise. The image segmentation problem is formulated as a minimization problem which jointly estimates the target boundary together with the target region range variation and background range variation directly from the noisy and anomaly-filled range data. This formulation allows direct incorporation of prior information concerning the target boundary, target ranges, and background ranges into an optimal reconstruction process. Curve evolution techniques and a generalized expectation-maximization algorithm are jointly employed as an efficient solver for minimizing the objective energy, resulting in a coupled pair of object and intensity optimization tasks. The method directly and optimally extracts the target boundary, avoiding a suboptimal two-step process involving image smoothing followed by boundary extraction. Experiments are presented demonstrating that the proposed approach is robust to anomalous pixels (missing data) and capable of producing accurate estimation of the target boundary and range values from noisy data. This paper addresses the problem of image segmentation by means of active contours, whose evolution is driven by the gradient flow derived from an energy functional that is based on the Bhattacharyya distance. In particular, given the values of a photo- metric variable (or of a set thereof), which is to be used for classifying the image pixels, the active contours are designed to converge to the shape that results in maximal discrepancy between the empirical distributions of the photometric variable inside and outside of the contours. The above discrepancy is measured by means of the Bhattacharyya distance that proves to be an extremely useful tool for solving the problem at hand. The proposed methodology can be viewed as a generalization of the segmentation methods, in which active contours maximize the difference between a finite number of empirical moments of the ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ distributions. Furthermore, it is shown that the proposed methodology is very versatile and flexible in the sense that it allows one to easily accommodate a diversity of the image features based on which the segmentation should be performed. As an additional contribution, a method for automatically adjusting the smoothness properties of the empirical distributions is proposed. Such a procedure is crucial in situations when the number of data samples (supporting a certain segmentation class) varies considerably in the course of the evolution of the active contour. In this case, the smoothness properties of the empirical distributions have to be properly adjusted to avoid either over-or underestimation artifacts. Although simple and efficient, traditional feature-based texture segmentation methods usually suffer from the intrinsical less inaccuracy, which is mainly caused by the oversimplified assumption that each textured subimage used to estimate a feature is homogeneous. To solve this problem, an adaptive segmentation algorithm based on the coupled Markov random field (CMRF) model is proposed in this paper. The CMRF model has two mutually dependent components: one models the observed image to estimate features, and the other models the labeling to achieve segmentation. When calculating the feature of each pixel, the homogeneity of the subimage is ensured by using only the pixels currently labeled as the same pattern. With the acquired features, the labeling is obtained through solving a maximum a posteriori problem. In our adaptive approach, the feature set and the labeling are mutually dependent on each other, and therefore are alternately optimized by using a simulated annealing scheme. With the gradual improvement of features' accuracy, the labeling is able to locate the exact boundary of each texture pattern adaptively. The proposed algorithm is compared with a simple MRF model based method in segmentation of Brodatz texture mosaics and real scene images. In this paper, we propose a PDE-based level set method. Traditionally, interfaces are represented by the zero level set of continuous level set functions. Instead, we let the interfaces be represented by discontinuities of piecewise constant level set functions. Each level set function can at convergence only take two values, i.e., it can only be 1 or -1; thus, our method is related to phase-field methods. Some of the properties of standard level set methods are preserved in the proposed method, while others are not. Using this new method for interface problems, we need to minimize a smooth convex functional under a quadratic constraint. The level set functions are discontinuous at convergence, but the minimization functional is smooth. We show numerical results using the method for segmentation of digital images. Multifractal analysis is becoming more and more popular in image segmentation community, in which the box-counting based multifractal dimension estimations are most commonly used. However, in spite of its computational efficiency, the regular partition scheme used by various box-counting methods intrinsically produces less accurate results. In this paper, a novel multifractal estimation algorithm based on mathematical morphology is proposed and a set of new multifractal descriptors, namely the local morphological multifractal exponents is defined to characterize the local scaling properties of textures. A series of cubic structure elements and an iterative dilation scheme are utilized so that the computational complexity of the morphological operations can be tremendously reduced. Both the proposed algorithm and the box-counting based methods have been applied to the segmentation of texture mosaics and real images. We propose a novel algorithm to partition an image with low depth-of-field (DOF) into focused object-of-interest (OOI) and defocused background. The proposed algorithm unfolds into three steps. In the first step, we transform the low-DOF image into an appropriate feature space, in which the spatial distribution of the high-frequency components is represented. This is conducted by computing higher order statistics (HOS) for all pixels in the low-DOF image. Next, the obtained feature space, which is called HOS map in this paper, is simplified by removing small dark holes and bright patches using a morphological filter by reconstruction. Finally, the OOI is extracted by applying region merging to the simplified image and by thresholding. Unlike the previous methods that rely on sharp details of OOI only, the proposed algorithm complements the limitation of them by using morphological filters, which also allows perfect preservation of the contour information. In this paper, we propose a new video inpainting method which applies to both static or free-moving camera videos. The method can be used for object removal, error concealment, and background reconstruction applications. To limit the computational time, a frame is inpainted by considering a small number of neighboring pictures which are grouped into a group of pictures (GoP). More specifically, to inpaint a frame, the method starts by aligning all the frames of the GoP. This is achieved by a region-based homography computation method which allows us to strengthen the spatial consistency of aligned frames. Then, from the stack of aligned frames, an energy function based on both spatial and temporal coherency terms is globally minimized. This energy function is efficient enough to provide high quality results even when the number of pictures in the GoP is rather small, e.g. 20 neighboring frames. This drastically reduces the algorithm complexity and makes the approach well suited for near real-time video editing applications as well as for loss concealment applications. Experiments with several challenging video sequences show that the proposed method provides visually pleasing results for object removal, error concealment, and background reconstruction context.
