A study presents an adaptive genetic algorithm to estimate the ridges in paper fingerprints. It is based on the fact that the ridges of fingerprints are parallel, and is adaptive because the likelihood of crossover and mutation, which are parameters of the algorithm proposed, are estimated online. Experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm performs well and is able to delineate the ridges even when the images are of poor quality.

The paper presents a new method for digital image encoding and decoding using the fractal concept of iterated transformations. The technique, known as fractal block coding, capitalizes on the self-transformability of an image and consists of obtaining a fractal code which is then iterated to converge into a fractal estimate of the source image. Results of monochrome image encoding and image reconstruction are also presented, along with a study on the connection between vector quantizers and fractal block coders.

A comment is presented about a paper, by Xiong et al, about translation- and scale-invariant adaptive wave transforms.

The capturing of digital imagery by scanning with double-sided printing often results in the reverse side showing through in the scan of the top side because the paper is semi-opaque. The phenomenon of show-through is discussed and an adaptive filtering scheme is described.
