Owing to the limits of incident energy and hardware system, hyperspectral (HS) images always suffer from low spatial resolution, compared with multispectral (MS) or panchromatic (PAN) images. Therefore, image fusion has emerged as a useful technology that is able to combine the characteristics of high spectral and spatial resolutions of HS and PAN/MS images. In this paper, a novel HS and PAN image fusion method based on convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed. The proposed method incorporates the ideas of both hyper-sharpening and MS pan-sharpening techniques, thereby employing a two-stage cascaded CNN to reconstruct the anticipated high-resolution HS image. Technically, the proposed CNN architecture consists of two sub-networks, the detail injection sub-network and unmixing sub-network. The former aims at producing a latent high-resolution MS image, whereas the latter estimates the desired high-resolution abundance maps by exploring the spatial and spectral information of both HS and MS images. Moreover, two model-training fashions are presented in this paper for the sake of effectively training our network. Experiments on simulated and real remote sensing data demonstrate that the proposed method can improve the spatial resolution and spectral fidelity of HS image, and achieve better performance than some state-of-the-art HS pan-sharpening algorithms. Image segmentation is the foundation of high-level image analysis and image understanding. How to effectively segment an image into regions that are “meaningful” to the human visual perception and ensure that the segmented regions are consistent at different resolutions is still a very challenging issue. Inspired by the idea of the Nonsymmetry and Anti-packing pattern representation Model in the Lab color space (NAMLab) and the “global-first” invariant perceptual theory, in this paper, we propose a novel framework for hierarchical image segmentation. Firstly, by defining the dissimilarity between two pixels in the Lab color space, we propose an NAMLab-based color image representation approach that is more in line with the human visual perception characteristics and can make the image pixels fast and effectively merge into the NAMLab blocks. Then, by defining the dissimilarity between two NAMLab-based regions and iteratively executing NAMLab-based merging algorithm of adjacent regions into larger ones to progressively generate a segmentation dendrogram, we propose a fast NAMLab-based algorithm for hierarchical image segmentation. Finally, the complexities of our proposed NAMLab-based algorithm for hierarchical image segmentation are analyzed in details. The experimental results presented in this paper show that our proposed algorithm when compared with the state-of-the-art algorithms not only can preserve more details of the object boundaries, but also it can better identify the foreground objects with similar color distributions. Near-infrared gray images captured along with corresponding visible color images have recently proven useful for image restoration and classification. This paper introduces a new coloring method to add colors to near-infrared gray images based on a contrast-preserving mapping model. A naive coloring method directly adds the colors from the visible color image to the near-infrared gray image. However, this method results in an unrealistic image because of the discrepancies in the brightness and image structure between the captured near-infrared gray image and the visible color image. To solve the discrepancy problem, first, we present a new contrast-preserving mapping model to create a new near-infrared gray image with a similar appearance in the luminance plane to the visible color image, while preserving the contrast and details of the captured near-infrared gray image. Then, we develop a method to derive realistic colors that can be added to the newly created near-infrared gray image based on the proposed contrast-preserving mapping model. Experimental results show that the proposed new method not only preserves the local contrast and details of the captured near-infrared gray image, but also transfers the realistic colors from the visible color image to the newly created near-infrared gray image. Learning-based infrared small object detection methods currently rely heavily on the classification backbone network. This tends to result in tiny object loss and feature distinguishability limitations as the network depth increases. Furthermore, small objects in infrared images are frequently emerged bright and dark, posing severe demands for obtaining precise object contrast information. For this reason, we in this paper propose a simple and effective “U-Net in U-Net” framework, UIU-Net for short, and detect small objects in infrared images. As the name suggests, UIU-Net embeds a tiny U-Net into a larger U-Net backbone, enabling the multi-level and multi-scale representation learning of objects. Moreover, UIU-Net can be trained from scratch, and the learned features can enhance global and local contrast information effectively. More specifically, the UIU-Net model is divided into two modules: the resolution-maintenance deep supervision (RM-DS) module and the interactive-cross attention (IC-A) module. RM-DS integrates Residual U-blocks into a deep supervision network to generate deep multi-scale resolution-maintenance features while learning global context information. Further, IC-A encodes the local context information between the low-level details and high-level semantic features. Extensive experiments conducted on two infrared single-frame image datasets, i.e., SIRST and Synthetic datasets, show the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed UIU-Net in comparison with several state-of-the-art infrared small object detection methods. Video super-resolution (VSR) has become one of the most critical problems in video processing. In the deep learning literature, recent works have shown the benefits of using adversarial-based and perceptual losses to improve the performance on various image restoration tasks; however, these have yet to be applied for video super-resolution. In this paper, we propose a generative adversarial network (GAN)-based formulation for VSR. We introduce a new generator network optimized for the VSR problem, named VSRResNet, along with new discriminator architecture to properly guide VSRResNet during the GAN training. We further enhance our VSR GAN formulation with two regularizers, a distance loss in feature-space and pixel-space, to obtain our final VSRResFeatGAN model. We show that pre-training our generator with the mean-squared-error loss only quantitatively surpasses the current state-of-the-art VSR models. Finally, we employ the PercepDist metric to compare the state-of-the-art VSR models. We show that this metric more accurately evaluates the perceptual quality of SR solutions obtained from neural networks, compared with the commonly used PSNR/SSIM metrics. In this paper, a new video super-resolution reconstruction (SRR) method with improved robustness to outliers is proposed. Although the regularized least mean squares (R-LMSs) are one of the SRR algorithms with the best reconstruction quality for its computational cost, and is naturally robust to registration inaccuracies, its performance is known to degrade severely in the presence of innovation outliers. By studying the proximal point cost function representation of the R-LMS iterative equation, a better understanding of its performance under different situations is attained. Using statistical properties of typical innovation outliers, a new cost function is then proposed and two new algorithms are derived, which present improved robustness to outliers while maintaining computational costs comparable with that of R-LMS. The Monte–Carlo simulation results illustrate that the proposed method outperforms the traditional and regularized versions of LMS, and is competitive with state-of-the-art SRR methods at a much smaller computational cost. This paper proposes a new method of calculating a matching metric for motion estimation. The proposed method splits the information in the source images into multiple scale and orientation subbands, reduces the subband values to a binary representation via an adaptive thresholding algorithm, and uses mutual information to model the similarity of corresponding square windows in each image. A moving window strategy is applied to recover a dense estimated motion field whose properties are explored. The proposed matching metric is a sum of mutual information scores across space, scale, and orientation. This facilitates the exploitation of information diversity in the source images. Experimental comparisons are performed amongst several related approaches, revealing that the proposed matching metric is better able to exploit information diversity, generating more accurate motion fields. Unsupervised image-to-image translation aims to learn the mapping from an input image in a source domain to an output image in a target domain without paired training dataset. Recently, remarkable progress has been made in translation due to the development of generative adversarial networks (GANs). However, existing methods suffer from the training instability as gradients passing from discriminator to generator become less informative when the source and target domains exhibit sufficiently large discrepancies in appearance or shape. To handle this challenging problem, in this paper, we propose a novel multi-constraint adversarial model (MCGAN) for image translation in which multiple adversarial constraints are applied at generator’s multi-scale outputs by a single discriminator to pass gradients to all the scales simultaneously and assist generator training for capturing large discrepancies in appearance between two domains. We further notice that the solution to regularize generator is helpful in stabilizing adversarial training, but results may have unreasonable structure or blurriness due to less context information flow from discriminator to generator. Therefore, we adopt dense combinations of the dilated convolutions at discriminator for supporting more information flow to generator. With extensive experiments on three public datasets, cat-to-dog, horse-to-zebra, and apple-to-orange, our method significantly improves state-of-the-arts on all datasets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thermography is a useful imaging technique as it works well in poor visibility conditions. High-resolution thermal imaging sensors are usually expensive and this limits the general applicability of such imaging systems. Many thermal cameras are accompanied by a high-resolution visible-range camera, which can be used as a guide to super-resolve the low-resolution thermal images. However, the thermal and visible images form a stereo pair and the difference in their spectral range makes it very challenging to pixel-wise align the two images. The existing guided super-resolution (GSR) methods are based on aligned image pairs and hence are not appropriate for this task. In this paper, we attempt to remove the necessity of pixel-to-pixel alignment for GSR by proposing two models: the first one employs a correlation-based feature-alignment loss to reduce the misalignment in the feature-space itself and the second model includes a misalignment-map estimation block as a part of an end-to-end framework that adequately aligns the input images for performing guided super-resolution. We conduct multiple experiments to compare our methods with existing state-of-the-art single and guided super-resolution techniques and show that our models are better suited for the task of unaligned guided super-resolution from very low-resolution thermal images. Deep convolutional neural networks have been applied by automobile industries, Internet giants, and academic institutes to boost autonomous driving technologies; while progress has been witnessed in environmental perception tasks, such as object detection and driver state recognition, the scene-centric understanding and identification still remain a virgin land. This mainly encompasses two key issues: 1) the lack of shared large datasets with comprehensively annotated road scene information and 2) the difficulty to find effective ways to train networks concerning the bias of category samples, image resolutions, scene dynamics, and capturing conditions. In this paper, we make two contributions: 1) we introduce a large-scale dataset with over 110 k images, dubbed DrivingScene, covering traffic scenarios under different weather conditions, road structures, and environmental instances and driving places, which is the first large-scale dataset for multi-class traffic scenes classification and 2) we propose a multi-label neural network for road scene recognition, which incorporates both single- and multi-class classification modes into a multi-level cost function for training with imbalanced categories and utilizes a deep data integration strategy to improve the classification ability on hard samples. Traditional image resizing methods, such as uniform scaling and content-aware image retargeting, are designed to preserve the visually salient contents of an image while resizing it. In this paper, we propose a novel image resizing approach called recognition-oriented image retargeting. Its goal is to preserve the distinctive local features for recognition instead of the traditional visual saliency during resizing. Moreover, we also apply our approach to image matching and image retrieval applications to verify its performance. Meanwhile, using our approach to these applications is able to solve some of the challenging problems in their fields. In image matching application, we find that our approach shows promising preservation of local feature descriptors. In image retrieval task, extensive experiments on Oxford5K, Holidays, Paris, and Flickr100k data sets demonstrate that our approach consistently outperforms other image retargeting methods by large margins in the aspects of retrieval precision and query bits. In this paper, we propose an effective novel content-aware chroma reconstruction (CACR) method for screen content images (SCIs). After receiving the decoded downsampled YUV image on the client side, our fast chroma-copy approach reconstructs the missing chroma pixels in the flat regions of SCI. Then, for non-flat regions, a non-flat region-based winner-first voting (NRWV) strategy is proposed to identify the chroma subsampling scheme used on the server side prior to compression. Further, an effective adaptive hybrid approach is proposed to reconstruct each missing chroma pixel in the non-flat region by fusing the two reconstructed results, one from our modified NRWV-based chroma subsampling-binding and luma-guided chroma reconstruction scheme, which favors the sharp edges in SCI, as well as the other from the bicubic interpolation scheme, which favors blurred and continuous-tone textures. Further, based on the identified chroma subsampling scheme, a geometry alignment-based error compensation approach is proposed to enhance the reconstructed chroma image. Based on typical test SCIs and JCT-VC screen content videos, comprehensive experiments are carried out in HEVC-16.17 to demonstrate that in terms of quality, visual effect, and quality-bitrate tradeoff of the reconstructed SCIs, our CACR method significantly outperforms the existing state-of-the-art methods. We study the dual problem of image super-resolution (SR), which we term image compact-resolution (CR). Opposite to image SR that hallucinates a visually plausible high-resolution image given a low-resolution input, image CR provides a low-resolution version of a high-resolution image, such that the low-resolution version is both visually pleasing and as informative as possible compared to the high-resolution image. We propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) for image CR, namely, CNN-CR, inspired by the great success of CNN for image SR. Specifically, we translate the requirements of image CR into operable optimization targets for training CNN-CR: the visual quality of the compact resolved image is ensured by constraining its difference from a naively downsampled version and the information loss of image CR is measured by upsampling/super-resolving the compact-resolved image and comparing that to the original image. Accordingly, CNN-CR can be trained either separately or jointly with a CNN for image SR. We explore different training strategies as well as different network structures for CNN-CR. Our experimental results show that the proposed CNN-CR clearly outperforms simple bicubic downsampling and achieves on average 2.25 dB improvement in terms of the reconstruction quality on a large collection of natural images. We further investigate two applications of image CR, i.e., low-bit-rate image compression and image retargeting. Experimental results show that the proposed CNN-CR helps achieve significant bits saving than High Efficiency Video Coding when applied to image compression and produce visually pleasing results when applied to image retargeting. Image restoration methods aim to recover the underlying clean image from corrupted observations. The expected patch log-likelihood (EPLL) algorithm is a powerful image restoration method that uses a Gaussian mixture model (GMM) prior on the patches of natural images. Although it is very effective for restoring images, its high runtime complexity makes the EPLL ill-suited for most practical applications. In this paper, we propose three approximations to the original EPLL algorithm. The resulting algorithm, which we call the fast-EPLL (FEPLL), attains a dramatic speed-up of two orders of magnitude over EPLL while incurring a negligible drop in the restored image quality (less than 0.5 dB). We demonstrate the efficacy and versatility of our algorithm on a number of inverse problems, such as denoising, deblurring, super-resolution, inpainting, and devignetting. To the best of our knowledge, the FEPLL is the first algorithm that can competitively restore a $512\times 512$ pixel image in under 0.5 s for all the degradations mentioned earlier without specialized code optimizations, such as CPU parallelization or GPU implementation. A scaler is one of the most important modules in various video applications, such as ultra-high definition TV and scalable video systems. A variety of scaling techniques have been used to increase the video quality when the resolution of the source image has to be up- and down-scaled. Some conventional schemes exploit the property of local block data. Others consider the edge information of the data to be scaled. In this paper, we formulate a scaling problem to minimize the information loss resulting from the resizing process. The loss is considered in both the spatial and the frequency domains, and then it is minimized to optimize the kernel of the scaler. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm reduces the information loss more than conventional schemes. Image processing in hexagonal lattice has many advantages rather than square lattice. Researchers have addressed benefits of hexagonal structure in applications such as binarization, rotation, scaling and edge detection. Approximately all existing hardwares for capturing and displaying images are based on square lattice. Therefore, the best way for using advantages of hexagonal lattice is to find a proper software approach to convert square pixels to hexagonal ones. This paper presents a hexagonal platform based on interpolation which addresses three existing hexagonal challenges including imperfect hexagonal shape, inaccurate intensity level of hexagonal pixels and lower resolution in hexagonal space. The proposed interpolation is computed by overlaps between square and hexagonal pixels. Overlap types are formulated mathematically in 8 separate cases. Each overlap case is detected automatically and used to compute final gray-level intensity of hexagonal pixels. It is mathematically and experimentally shown that the proposed method satisfies necessary conditions for square-to-hexagonal conversion. The proposed scheme is evaluated on synthetic and real images with 10 different levels of noise in interpolation and edge detection applications. In synthetic images, the proposed method achieves the best figure of merit (FOM) 99.92% and 98.67% in high and low SNRs 100 and 20, respectively. Obtaining a high-quality frontal face image from a low-resolution (LR) non-frontal face image is primarily important for many facial analysis applications. However, mainstreams either focus on super-resolving near-frontal LR faces or frontalizing non-frontal high-resolution (HR) faces. It is desirable to perform both tasks seamlessly for daily-life unconstrained face images. In this paper, we present a novel Vivid Face Hallucination Generative Adversarial Network (VividGAN) for simultaneously super-resolving and frontalizing tiny non-frontal face images. VividGAN consists of coarse-level and fine-level Face Hallucination Networks (FHnet) and two discriminators, i.e., Coarse-D and Fine-D. The coarse-level FHnet generates a frontal coarse HR face and then the fine-level FHnet makes use of the facial component appearance prior, i.e., fine-grained facial components, to attain a frontal HR face image with authentic details. In the fine-level FHnet, we also design a facial component-aware module that adopts the facial geometry guidance as clues to accurately align and merge the frontal coarse HR face and prior information. Meanwhile, two-level discriminators are designed to capture both the global outline of a face image as well as detailed facial characteristics. The Coarse-D enforces the coarsely hallucinated faces to be upright and complete while the Fine-D focuses on the fine hallucinated ones for sharper details. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our VividGAN achieves photo-realistic frontal HR faces, reaching superior performance in downstream tasks, i.e., face recognition and expression classification, compared with other state-of-the-art methods. Self-similarity is a prominent characteristic of natural images that can play a major role when it comes to their denoising, restoration or compression. In this paper, we propose a novel probabilistic model that is based on the concept of image patch similarity and applied to the problem of Single Image Super Resolution. Based on this model, we derive a Variational Bayes algorithm, which super resolves low-resolution images, where the assumed distribution for the quantified similarity between two image patches is heavy-tailed. Moreover, we prove mathematically that the proposed algorithm is both an extended and superior version of the probabilistic Non-Local Means (NLM). Its prime advantage remains though, which is that it requires no training. A comparison of the proposed approach with state-of-the-art methods, using various quantitative metrics shows that it is almost on par, for images depicting rural themes and in terms of the Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) with the best performing methods that rely on trained deep learning models. On the other hand, it is clearly inferior to them, for urban themed images and in terms of all metrics, especially for the Mean-Squared-Error (MSE). In addition, qualitative evaluation of the proposed approach is performed using the Perceptual Index metric, which has been introduced to better mimic the human perception of the image quality. This evaluation favors our approach when compared to the best performing method that requires no training, even if they perform equally in qualitative terms, reinforcing the argument that MSE is not always an accurate metric for image quality. Image restoration methods based on convolutional neural networks have shown great success in the literature. However, since most of networks are not deep enough, there is still some room for the performance improvement. On the other hand, though some models are deep and introduce shortcuts for easy training, they ignore the importance of location and scaling of different inputs within the shortcuts. As a result, existing networks can only handle one specific image restoration application. To address such problems, we propose a novel adaptive residual network (ARN) for high-quality image restoration in this paper. Our ARN is a deep residual network, which is composed of convolutional layers, parametric rectified linear unit layers, and some adaptive shortcuts. We assign different scaling parameters to different inputs of the shortcuts, where the scaling is considered as part parameters of the ARN and trained adaptively according to different applications. Due to the special construction of ARN, it can solve many image restoration problems and have superior performance. We demonstrate its capabilities with three representative applications, including Gaussian image denoising, single image super resolution, and JPEG image deblocking. Experimental results prove that our model greatly outperforms numerous state-of-the-art restoration methods in terms of both peak signal-to-noise ratio and structure similarity index metrics, e.g., it achieves 0.2–0.3 dB gain in average compared with the second best method at a wide range of situations. In this paper, we propose a novel L0 -regularized optimization framework for image downscaling. The optimization is driven by two L0 -regularized priors. The first prior, gradient-ratio prior, is based on the observation that the number of edges in the downscaled image is approximately inverse square proportional to the downscaling factor. By introducing L0 norm sparsity to the gradient ratio, the downscaled image is able to preserve the most salient edges as well as the visual perception of the original image. The second prior, downsampling prior, is to constrain the downsampling matrix so that pixels of the downscaled image are estimated according to those optimal neighboring pixels. Extensive experiments on the Urban100 and BSDS500 data sets show that the proposed algorithm achieves superior performance over the state-of-the-arts, in terms of both quality and robustness. In this paper, we propose a new framework for hierarchical image segmentation based on iterative contraction and merging. In the proposed framework, we treat the hierarchical image segmentation problem as a sequel of optimization problems, with each optimization process being realized by a contraction-and-merging process to identify and merge the most similar data pairs at the current resolution. At the beginning, we perform pixel-based contraction and merging to quickly combine image pixels into initial region-elements with visually indistinguishable intra-region color difference. After that, we iteratively perform region-based contraction and merging to group adjacent regions into larger ones to progressively form a segmentation dendrogram for hierarchical segmentation. Comparing with the state-of-the-art techniques, the proposed algorithm can not only produce high-quality segmentation results in a more efficient way, but also keep a lot of boundary details in the segmentation results. In this paper, we aim at super-resolving a low-resolution texture under the assumption that a high-resolution patch of the texture is available. To do so, we propose a variational method that combines two approaches that are texture synthesis and image reconstruction. The resulting objective function holds a nonconvex energy that involves a quadratic distance to the low-resolution image, a histogram-based distance to the high-resolution patch, and a nonlocal regularization that links the missing pixels with the patch pixels. As for the histogram-based measure, we use a sum of Wasserstein distances between the histograms of some linear transformations of the textures. The resulting optimization problem is efficiently solved with a primal-dual proximal method. Experiments show that our method leads to a significant improvement, both visually and numerically, with respect to the state-of-the-art algorithms for solving similar problems. A new multi-scale deep learning (MDL) framework is proposed and exploited for conducting image interpolation in this paper. The core of the framework is a seeding network that needs to be designed for the targeted task. For image interpolation, a novel attention-aware inception network (AIN) is developed as the seeding network; it has two key stages: 1) feature extraction based on the low-resolution input image; and 2) feature-to-image mapping to enlarge image’s size or resolution. Note that the designed seeding network, AIN, needs to be trained with a matched training dataset at each scale. For that, multi-scale image patches are generated using our proposed pyramid cut, which outperforms the conventional image pyramid method by completely avoiding aliasing issue. After training, the trained AINs are then combined for processing the input image in the testing stage. Extensive experimental simulation results obtained from seven image datasets (comprising 359 images in total) have clearly shown that the proposed MAIN consistently delivers highly accurate interpolated images. Regularization-based image restoration is one of the most powerful tools in image processing and computer vision thanks to its flexibility for handling various inverse problems. However, designing an optimal regularization function still remains unsolved since natural images and related scene types have a complex structure. In this paper, we present a general and principled framework, called deeply aggregated alternating minimization (DeepAM). We design a convolutional neural network (CNN) to implicitly parameterize the regularizer of the alternating minimization (AM) algorithm. Contrary to the conventional AM algorithm based on a point-wise proximal mapping, the DeepAM projects intermediate estimate into a set of natural images via deep aggregation. Since the CNN is fully integrated into the AM procedure, all parameters can be jointly optimized through end-to-end training. These properties enable the DeepAM to converge with a small number of iterations, while maintaining an algorithmic simplicity. We show that the DeepAM outperforms state-of-the-art methods, including nonlocal-based methods, Plug-and-Play regularization, and recent data-driven approaches. The effectiveness of our framework is demonstrated in a variety of image restoration tasks: Guassian denoising, deraining, deblurring, super-resolution, color-guided depth upsampling, and RGB/NIR restoration. Low-light image enhancement is a challenging task that has attracted considerable attention. Pictures taken in low-light conditions often have bad visual quality. To address the problem, we regard the low-light enhancement as a residual learning problem that is to estimate the residual between low- and normal-light images. In this paper, we propose a novel Deep Lightening Network (DLN) that benefits from the recent development of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). The proposed DLN consists of several Lightening Back-Projection (LBP) blocks. The LBPs perform lightening and darkening processes iteratively to learn the residual for normal-light estimations. To effectively utilize the local and global features, we also propose a Feature Aggregation (FA) block that adaptively fuses the results of different LBPs. We evaluate the proposed method on different datasets. Numerical results show that our proposed DLN approach outperforms other methods under both objective and subjective metrics. Face recognition in the wild is now advancing towards light-weight models, fast inference speed and resolution-adapted capability. In this paper, we propose a bridge distillation approach to turn a complex face model pretrained on private high-resolution faces into a light-weight one for low-resolution face recognition. In our approach, such a cross-dataset resolution-adapted knowledge transfer problem is solved via two-step distillation. In the first step, we conduct cross-dataset distillation to transfer the prior knowledge from private high-resolution faces to public high-resolution faces and generate compact and discriminative features. In the second step, the resolution-adapted distillation is conducted to further transfer the prior knowledge to synthetic low-resolution faces via multi-task learning. By learning low-resolution face representations and mimicking the adapted high-resolution knowledge, a light-weight student model can be constructed with high efficiency and promising accuracy in recognizing low-resolution faces. Experimental results show that the student model performs impressively in recognizing low-resolution faces with only 0.21M parameters and 0.057MB memory. Light field imaging, which captures spatial-angular information of light incident on image sensors, enables many interesting applications such as image refocusing and augmented reality. However, due to the limited sensor resolution, a trade-off exists between the spatial and angular resolutions. To increase the angular resolution, view synthesis techniques have been adopted to generate new views from existing views. However, traditional learning-based view synthesis mainly considers the image quality of each view of the light field and neglects the quality of the refocused images. In this paper, we propose a new loss function called refocused image error (RIE) to address the issue. The main idea is that the image quality of the synthesized light field should be optimized in the refocused image domain because it is where the light field is viewed. We analyze the behavior of RIE in the spectral domain and test the performance of our approach against previous approaches on both real (INRIA) and software-rendered (HCI) light field datasets using objective assessment metrics such as MSE, MAE, PSNR, SSIM, and GMSD. The task of single image super-resolution (SISR) is a highly ill-posed inverse problem since reconstructing the high-frequency details from a low-resolution image is challenging. Most previous CNN-based super-resolution (SR) methods tend to directly learn the mapping from the low-resolution image to the high-resolution image through some complex convolutional neural networks. However, the method of blindly increasing the depth of the network is not the best choice because the performance improvement of such methods is marginal but the computational cost is huge. A more efficient method is to integrate the image prior knowledge into the model to assist the image reconstruction. Indeed, the soft-edge has been widely applied in many computer vision tasks as the role of an important image feature. In this paper, we propose a Soft-edge assisted Network (SeaNet) to reconstruct the high-quality SR image with the help of image soft-edge. The proposed SeaNet consists of three sub-nets: a rough image reconstruction network (RIRN), a soft-edge reconstruction network (Edge-Net), and an image refinement network (IRN). The complete reconstruction process consists of two stages. In Stage-I, the rough SR feature maps and the SR soft-edge are reconstructed by the RIRN and Edge-Net, respectively. In Stage-II, the outputs of the previous stages are fused and then fed to the IRN for high-quality SR image reconstruction. Extensive experiments show that our SeaNet converges rapidly and achieves excellent performance under the assistance of image soft-edge. Eye tracking technology in low resolution scenarios is not a completely solved issue to date. The possibility of using eye tracking in a mobile gadget is a challenging objective that would permit to spread this technology to non-explored fields. In this paper, a knowledge based approach is presented to solve gaze estimation in low resolution settings. The understanding of the high resolution paradigm permits to propose alternative models to solve gaze estimation. In this manner, three models are presented: a geometrical model, an interpolation model and a compound model, as solutions for gaze estimation for remote low resolution systems. Since this work considers head position essential to improve gaze accuracy, a method for head pose estimation is also proposed. The methods are validated in an optimal framework, I2Head database, which combines head and gaze data. The experimental validation of the models demonstrates their sensitivity to image processing inaccuracies, critical in the case of the geometrical model. Static and extreme movement scenarios are analyzed showing the higher robustness of compound and geometrical models in the presence of user’s displacement. The performance of single image super-resolution (SISR) has been largely improved by innovative designs of deep architectures. An important claim raised by these designs is that the deep models have large receptive field size and strong nonlinearity. However, we are concerned about the question that which factor, receptive field size or model depth, is more critical for SISR. Towards revealing the answers, in this paper, we propose a strategy based on dilated convolution to investigate how the two factors affect the performance of SISR. Our findings from exhaustive investigations suggest that SISR is more sensitive to the changes of receptive field size than to the model depth variations, and that the model depth must be congruent with the receptive field size to produce improved performance. These findings inspire us to design a shallower architecture which can save computational and memory cost while preserving comparable effectiveness with respect to a much deeper architecture. Convolutional Neural Networks have achieved significant success across multiple computer vision tasks. However, they are vulnerable to carefully crafted, human-imperceptible adversarial noise patterns which constrain their deployment in critical security-sensitive systems. This paper proposes a computationally efficient image enhancement approach that provides a strong defense mechanism to effectively mitigate the effect of such adversarial perturbations. We show that deep image restoration networks learn mapping functions that can bring off-the-manifold adversarial samples onto the natural image manifold, thus restoring classification towards correct classes. A distinguishing feature of our approach is that, in addition to providing robustness against attacks, it simultaneously enhances image quality and retains models performance on clean images. Furthermore, the proposed method does not modify the classifier or requires a separate mechanism to detect adversarial images. The effectiveness of the scheme has been demonstrated through extensive experiments, where it has proven a strong defense in gray-box settings. The proposed scheme is simple and has the following advantages: 1) it does not require any model training or parameter optimization, 2) it complements other existing defense mechanisms, 3) it is agnostic to the attacked model and attack type, and 4) it provides superior performance across all popular attack algorithms. Noisy image super-resolution (SR) is a significant challenging process due to the smoothness caused by denoising. Iterative back-projection (IBP) can be helpful in further enhancing the reconstructed SR image, but there is no clean reference image available. This paper proposes a novel back-projection algorithm for noisy image SR. Its main goal is to pursuit the consistency between LR and SR images. We aim to estimate the clean reconstruction error to be back-projected, using the noisy and denoised reconstruction errors. We formulate a new cost function on the principal component analysis (PCA) transform domain to estimate the clean reconstruction error. In the data term of the cost function, noisy and denoised reconstruction errors are combined in a region-adaptive manner using texture probability. In addition, the sparsity constraint is incorporated into the regularization term, based on the Laplacian characteristics of the reconstruction error. Finally, we propose an eigenvector estimation method to minimize the effect of noise. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can perform back-projection in a more noise-robust manner than the conventional IBP, and harmoniously work with any other SR methods as a post-processing. Human parsing and matting play important roles in various applications, such as dress collocation, clothing recommendation, and image editing. In this paper, we propose a lightweight hybrid model that unifies the fully-supervised hierarchical-granularity parsing task and the unsupervised matting one. Our model comprises two parts, the extensible hierarchical semantic segmentation block using CNN and the matting module composed of guided filters. Given a human image, the segmentation block stage-1 first obtains a primitive segmentation map to separate the human and the background. The primitive segmentation is then fed into stage-2 together with the original image to give a rough segmentation of human body. This procedure is repeated in the stage-3 to acquire a refined segmentation. The matting module takes as input the above estimated segmentation maps and produces the matting map, in a fully unsupervised manner. In this paper, we focus on restoring high-resolution facial images under noisy low-resolution scenarios. This problem is a challenging problem as the most important structures and details of captured facial images are missing. To address this problem, we propose a novel local patch-based face super-resolution (FSR) method via the joint learning of the contextual model. The contextual model is based on the topology consisting of contextual sub-patches, which provide more useful structural information than the commonly used local contextual structures due to the finer patch size. In this way, the contextual models are able to recover the missing local structures in target patches. In order to further strengthen the structural compensation function of contextual topology, we introduce the recognition feature as additional regularity. Based on the contextual model, we formulate the super-resolved procedure as a contextual joint representation with respect to the target patch and its adjacent patches. The high-resolution image is obtained by weighting contextual estimations. In this paper, we propose a novel multiple pyramids based image inpainting method using local patch statistics and geometric feature-based sparse representation to maintain texture consistency and structure coherence. First, we approximate each patch in the target region (region to be inpainted) by statistically dominant local candidate patches to preserve local consistency. Then each approximated patch is refined by a sparse representation of candidate patches based on local steering kernel (LSK) feature to retain texture quality. We also propose a multiple pyramids based approach to generate several inpainted versions of the input image, one for each of the pyramids. Finally, we combine the inpainted images by gradient-based weighted average to produce the final inpainted image. This approach helps to maintain structure coherence and to remove artifacts which may appear in the inpainted images due to different initial scales of the individual pyramids. The proposed method is tested on a wide range of natural images for scratch and blob/object removal. In earlier work, we proposed a super-resolution (SR) method that required the availability of two low resolution (LR) sequences corresponding to two different sampling rates, where images from one sequence were used as a basis to represent the polyphase components (PPCs) of the high resolution (HR) image, while the other LR sequences provided the reference LR image (to be super-resolved). The (simple) algorithm implemented by Salem and Yagle is only applicable when the scene is static. In this paper, we recast our approach to SR as a two-stage example-based algorithm to process dynamic scenes. We employ feature selection to create, from the LR frames, local LR dictionaries to represent PPCs of HR patches. To enforce sparsity, we implement Gaussian generative models as an efficient alternative to L1-norm minimization. Estimation errors are further reduced using what we refer to as the anchors, which are based on the relationship between PPCs corresponding to different sampling rates. In the second stage, we revert to simple single frame SR (applied to each frame), using HR dictionaries extracted from the super-resolved sequence of the previous stage. The second stage is thus a reiteration of the sparsity coding scheme, using only one LR sequence, and without involving PPCs. Dictionary-based super-resolution (SR) algorithms usually select dictionary atoms based on the distance or similarity metrics. Although the optimal selection of the nearest neighbors is of central importance for such methods, the impact of using proper metrics for SR has been overlooked in literature, mainly due to the vast usage of Euclidean distance. In this paper, we present a very fast regression-based algorithm, which builds on the densely populated anchored neighborhoods and sublinear search structures. We perform a study of the nature of the features commonly used for SR, observing that those features usually lie in the unitary hypersphere, where every point has a diametrically opposite one, i.e., its antipode, with same module and angle, but the opposite direction. Even though, we validate the benefits of using antipodally invariant metrics, most of the binary splits use Euclidean distance, which does not handle antipodes optimally. In order to benefit from both the worlds, we propose a simple yet effective antipodally invariant transform that can be easily included in the Euclidean distance calculation. We modify the original spherical hashing algorithm with this metric in our antipodally invariant spherical hashing scheme, obtaining the same performance as a pure antipodally invariant metric. We round up our contributions with a novel feature transform that obtains a better coarse approximation of the input image thanks to iterative backprojection. Subpixel-based image scaling can improve the apparent resolution of displayed images by controlling individual subpixels rather than whole pixels. However, improved luminance resolution brings chrominance distortion, making it crucial to suppress color error while maintaining sharpness. Moreover, it is challenging to develop a scheme that is applicable for various subpixel arrangements and for arbitrary scaling factors. In this paper, we address the aforementioned issues by proposing a generalized continuous-domain analysis model, which considers the low-pass nature of the human visual system (HVS). Specifically, given a discrete image and a grid-like subpixel arrangement, the signal perceived by the HVS is modeled as a 2D continuous image. Minimizing the difference between the perceived image and the continuous target image leads to the proposed scheme, which we call continuous-domain analysis for subpixel-based scaling (CASS). To eliminate the ringing artifacts caused by the ideal low-pass filtering in CASS, we propose an improved scheme, which we call CASS with Laplacian-of-Gaussian filtering. Experiments show that the proposed methods provide sharp images with negligible color fringing artifacts. Our methods are comparable with the state-of-the-art methods when applied on the RGB stripe arrangement, and outperform existing methods when applied on other subpixel arrangements. It is widely acknowledged that single image super-resolution (SISR) methods play a critical role in recovering the missing high-frequencies in an input low-resolution image. As SISR is severely ill-conditioned, image priors are necessary to regularize the solution spaces and generate the corresponding high-resolution image. In this paper, we propose an effective SISR framework based on the enhanced non-local similarity modeling and learning-based multi-directional feature prediction (ENLTV-MDFP). Since both the modeled and learned priors are exploited, the proposed ENLTV-MDFP method benefits from the complementary properties of the reconstruction-based and learning-based SISR approaches. Specifically, for the non-local similarity-based modeled prior [enhanced non-local total variation, (ENLTV)], it is characterized via the decaying kernel and stable group similarity reliability schemes. For the learned prior [multi-directional feature prediction prior, (MDFP)], it is learned via the deep convolutional neural network. The modeled prior performs well in enhancing edges and suppressing visual artifacts, while the learned prior is effective in hallucinating details from external images. Combining these two complementary priors in the MAP framework, a combined SR cost function is proposed. Finally, the combined SR problem is solved via the split Bregman iteration algorithm. Bit-depth expansion (BDE) is important for displaying a low bit-depth image in a high bit-depth monitor. Current BDE algorithms often utilize traditional methods to fill the missing least significant bits and suffer from multiple kinds of perceivable artifacts. In this paper, we present a deep residual network-based method for BDE. Based on the different properties of flat and non-flat areas, two channels are proposed to reconstruct these two kinds of areas, respectively. Moreover, a simple yet efficient local adaptive adjustment preprocessing is presented in the flat-area-channel. By combining the benefits of both the traditional debanding strategy and network-based reconstruction, the proposed method can further promote the subjective quality of the flat area. Transmission and compression technologies advancement over the past decade led to a shift of multimedia content towards cloud systems. Multiple copies of the same video are available through numerous distribution systems. Different compression levels, algorithms and resolutions are used to match the requirements of particular applications. As 4k display technologies are rapidly adopted, resolution enhancement algorithms are of vital importance. Current solutions do not take into account the particularities of different video encoders, while video reconstruction methods from compressed sources do not provide resolution enhancement. In this paper, we propose a multi source compressed video enhancement framework, where each description can have a different compression level and resolution. Using a variational formulation based on a modern proximal dual splitting algorithm, we efficiently combine multiple descriptions of the same video. Two applications are proposed: combining two compressed low resolution (LR) descriptions of a video sequence into a high resolution (HR) description and enhancing a compressed HR video using a LR compressed description. Tests are performed over multiple video sequences encoded with high efficiency video coding, at different compression levels and resolutions obtained through multiple down-sampling methods. Dilated convolutions support expanding receptive field without parameter exploration or resolution loss, which turn out to be suitable for pixel-level prediction problems. In this paper, we propose multiscale single image super-resolution (SR) based on dilated convolutions. We adopt dilated convolutions to expand the receptive field size without incurring additional computational complexity. We mix standard convolutions and dilated convolutions in each layer, called mixed convolutions, i.e., in the mixed convolutional layer, and the feature extracted by dilated convolutions and standard convolutions are concatenated. We theoretically analyze the receptive field and intensity of mixed convolutions to discover their role in SR. Mixed convolutions remove blind spots and capture the correlation between low-resolution (LR) and high-resolution (HR) image pairs successfully, thus achieving good generalization ability. We verify those properties of mixed convolutions by training 5-layer and 10-layer networks. We also train a 20-layer deep network to compare the performance of the proposed method with those of the state-of-the-art ones. Moreover, we jointly learn maps with different scales from a LR image to its HR one in a single network. Depth information is being widely used in many real-world applications. However, due to the limitation of depth sensing technology, the captured depth map in practice usually has much lower resolution than that of color image counterpart. In this paper, we propose to combine the internal smoothness prior and external gradient consistency constraint in graph domain for depth super-resolution. On one hand, a new graph Laplacian regularizer is proposed to preserve the inherent piecewise smooth characteristic of depth, which has desirable filtering properties. A specific weight matrix of the respect graph is defined to make full use of information of both depth and the corresponding guidance image. On the other hand, inspired by an observation that the gradient of depth is small except at edge separating regions, we introduce a graph gradient consistency constraint to enforce that the graph gradient of depth is close to the thresholded gradient of guidance. We reinterpret the gradient thresholding model as variational optimization with sparsity constraint. In this way, we remedy the problem of structure discrepancy between depth and guidance. Finally, the internal and external regularizations are casted into a unified optimization framework, which can be efficiently addressed by ADMM. In this paper, we propose a Weighted Local sparse representation based Depth Image Super-Resolution (WLDISR) schemes aiming at improving the Virtual View Image (VVI) quality of 3D video system. Different from color images, depth images are mainly used to provide geometrical information in synthesizing VVI. Due to the view synthesis characteristics difference between textural structures and smooth regions of depth images, we divide the depth images into edge and smooth patches and learn two local dictionaries, respectively. Meanwhile, the weight term is derived and incorporated explicitly in the cost function to denote different importance of edge structures and smooth regions to the VVI quality. Then, local sparse representation and weighted sparse representation are jointly used in both dictionary learning and reconstruction phases in depth image super-resolution. Based on different optimizations on learning and reconstruction modules, three WLDISR schemes, WLDISR-D, WLDISR-R, and WLDISR-ALL, are proposed. Experimental results on 3D sequences demonstrate that the proposed WLDISR-D, WLDISR-R, and WLDISR-ALL schemes can achieve more than 1.9-, 2.03-, and 2.16-dB gains on average, respectively, in terms of the VVIs’ quality, as compared with the state-of-the-art schemes. Example learning-based single image super-resolution (SR) is a promising method for reconstructing a high-resolution (HR) image from a single-input low-resolution (LR) image. Lots of popular SR approaches are more likely either time-or space-intensive, which limit their practical applications. Hence, some research has focused on a subspace view and delivered state-of-the-art results. In this paper, we utilize an effective way with mixture prior models to transform the large nonlinear feature space of LR images into a group of linear subspaces in the training phase. In particular, we first partition image patches into several groups by a novel selective patch processing method based on difference curvature of LR patches, and then learning the mixture prior models in each group. Moreover, different prior distributions have various effectiveness in SR, and in this case, we find that student-t prior shows stronger performance than the well-known Gaussian prior. In the testing phase, we adopt the learned multiple mixture prior models to map the input LR features into the appropriate subspace, and finally reconstruct the corresponding HR image in a novel mixed matching way. Single-image super-resolution (SR) reconstruction via sparse representation has recently attracted broad interest. It is known that a low-resolution (LR) image is susceptible to noise or blur due to the degradation of the observed image, which would lead to a poor SR performance. In this paper, we propose a novel robust edge-preserving smoothing SR (REPS-SR) method in the framework of sparse representation. An EPS regularization term is designed based on gradient-domain-guided filtering to preserve image edges and reduce noise in the reconstructed image. Furthermore, a smoothing-aware factor adaptively determined by the estimation of the noise level of LR images without manual interference is presented to obtain an optimal balance between the data fidelity term and the proposed EPS regularization term. An iterative shrinkage algorithm is used to obtain the SR image results for LR images. The proposed adaptive smoothing-aware scheme makes our method robust to different levels of noise. This paper presents a Markov random field (MRF)-based image inpainting algorithm using patch selection from groups of similar patches and optimal patch assignment through joint patch refinement. In patch selection, a novel group formation strategy based on subspace clustering is introduced to search the candidate patches in relevant source region only. This improves patch searching in terms of both quality and time. We also propose an efficient patch refinement scheme using higher order singular value decomposition to capture underlying pattern among the candidate patches. This eliminates random variation and unwanted artifacts as well. Finally, a weight term is computed, based on the refined patches and is incorporated in the objective function of the MRF model to improve the optimal patch assignment. Depth map sensed by low-cost active sensor is often limited in resolution, whereas depth information achieved from structure from motion or sparse depth scanning techniques may result in a sparse point cloud. Achieving a high-resolution (HR) depth map from a low resolution (LR) depth map or densely reconstructing a sparse non-uniformly sampled depth map are fundamentally similar problems with different types of upsampling requirements. The first problem involves upsampling in a uniform grid, whereas the second type of problem requires an upsampling in a non-uniform grid. In this paper, we propose a new approach to address such issues in a unified framework, based on sparse representation. Unlike, most of the approaches of depth map restoration, our approach does not require an HR intensity image. Based on example depth maps, sub-dictionaries of exemplars are constructed, and are used to restore HR/dense depth map. In the case of uniform upsampling of LR depth map, an edge preserving constraint is used for preserving the discontinuity present in the depth map, and a pyramidal reconstruction strategy is applied in order to deal with higher upsampling factors. For upsampling of non-uniformly sampled sparse depth map, we compute the missing information in local patches from that from similar exemplars. Furthermore, we also suggest an alternative method of reconstructing dense depth map from very sparse non-uniformly sampled depth data by sequential cascading of uniform and non-uniform upsampling techniques. Measuring the similarity between the patches in images is a fundamental building block in various tasks. Naturally, the patch size has a major impact on the matching quality and on the consequent application performance. Under the assumption that our patch database is sufficiently sampled, using large patches (e.g., $21 \,\, \times \,\, 21$ ) should be preferred over small ones (e.g., $7 \,\, \times \,\, 7$ ). However, this dense-sampling assumption is rarely true; in most cases, large patches cannot find relevant nearby examples. This phenomenon is a consequence of the curse of dimensionality, stating that the database size should grow exponentially with the patch size to ensure proper matches. This explains the favored choice of small patch size in most applications. Is there a way to keep the simplicity and work with small patches while getting some of the benefits that large patches provide? In this paper, we offer such an approach. We propose to concatenate the regular content of a conventional (small) patch with a compact representation of its (large) surroundings—its context. Therefore, with a minor increase of the dimensions (e.g., with additional ten values to the patch representation), we implicitly/softly describe the information of a large patch. The additional descriptors are computed based on a self-similarity behavior of the patch surrounding. We show that this approach achieves better matches, compared with the use of conventional-size patches, without the need to increase the database-size. Also, the effectiveness of the proposed method is tested on three distinct problems: 1) external natural image denoising; 2) depth image super-resolution; and 3) motion-compensated frame-rate up conversion. Labeling connected components and calculating the Euler number in a binary image are two fundamental processes for computer vision and pattern recognition. This paper presents an ingenious method for identifying a hole in a binary image in the first scan of connected-component labeling. Our algorithm can perform connected component labeling and Euler number computing simultaneously, and it can also calculate the connected component (object) number and the hole number efficiently. The additional cost for calculating the hole number is only $O(H)$ , where $H$ is the hole number in the image. Our algorithm can be implemented almost in the same way as a conventional equivalent-label-set-based connected-component labeling algorithm.
