Recently, food recognition has received more and more attention in image processing and computer vision for its great potential applications in human health. Most of the existing methods directly extracted deep visual features via convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for food recognition. Such methods ignore the characteristics of food images and are, thus, hard to achieve optimal recognition performance. In contrast to general object recognition, food images typically do not exhibit distinctive spatial arrangement and common semantic patterns. In this paper, we propose a multi-scale multi-view feature aggregation (MSMVFA) scheme for food recognition. MSMVFA can aggregate high-level semantic features, mid-level attribute features, and deep visual features into a unified representation. These three types of features describe the food image from different granularity. Therefore, the aggregated features can capture the semantics of food images with the greatest probability. For that solution, we utilize additional ingredient knowledge to obtain mid-level attribute representation via ingredient-supervised CNNs. High-level semantic features and deep visual features are extracted from class-supervised CNNs. Considering food images do not exhibit distinctive spatial layout in many cases, MSMVFA fuses multi-scale CNN activations for each type of features to make aggregated features more discriminative and invariable to geometrical deformation. Finally, the aggregated features are more robust, comprehensive, and discriminative via two-level fusion, namely multi-scale fusion for each type of features and multi-view aggregation for different types of features. In addition, MSMVFA is general and different deep networks can be easily applied into this scheme. Extensive experiments and evaluations demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art recognition performance on three popular large-scale food benchmark datasets in Top-1 recognition accuracy. Video-based human action recognition is currently one of the most active research areas in computer vision. Various research studies indicate that the performance of action recognition is highly dependent on the type of features being extracted and how the actions are represented. Since the release of the Kinect camera, a large number of Kinect-based human action recognition techniques have been proposed in the literature. However, there still does not exist a thorough comparison of these Kinect-based techniques under the grouping of feature types, such as handcrafted versus deep learning features and depth-based versus skeleton-based features. In this paper, we analyze and compare 10 recent Kinect-based algorithms for both cross-subject action recognition and cross-view action recognition using six benchmark datasets. In addition, we have implemented and improved some of these techniques and included their variants in the comparison. Our experiments show that the majority of methods perform better on cross-subject action recognition than cross-view action recognition, that the skeleton-based features are more robust for cross-view recognition than the depth-based features, and that the deep learning features are suitable for large datasets. Deep convolutional neural networks have largely benefited computer vision tasks. However, the high computational complexity limits their real-world applications. To this end, many methods have been proposed for efficient network learning, and applications in portable mobile devices. In this paper, we propose a novel Moving-Mobile-Network, named M2Net, for landmark recognition, equipped each landmark image with located geographic information. We intuitively find that M2Net can essentially promote the diversity of the inference path (selected blocks subset) selection, so as to enhance the recognition accuracy. The above intuition is achieved by our proposed reward function with the input of geo-location and landmarks. We also find that the performance of other portable networks can be improved via our architecture. We construct two landmark image datasets, with each landmark associated with geographic information, over which we conduct extensive experiments to demonstrate that M2Net achieves improved recognition accuracy with comparable complexity. Analysis of egocentric video has recently drawn attention of researchers in the computer vision as well as multimedia communities. In this paper, we propose a weakly supervised superpixel level joint framework for localization, recognition and summarization of actions in an egocentric video. We first recognize and localize single as well as multiple action(s) in each frame of an egocentric video and then construct a summary of these detected actions. The superpixel level solution helps in precise localization of actions in addition to improving the recognition accuracy. Superpixels are extracted within the central regions of the egocentric video frames; these central regions being determined through a previously developed center-surround model. A sparse spatio-temporal video representation graph is constructed in the deep feature space with the superpixels as nodes. A weakly supervised solution using random walks yields action labels for each superpixel. After determining action label(s) for each frame from its constituent superpixels, we apply a fractional knapsack type formulation for obtaining a summary (of actions). This paper proposes a new method of calculating a matching metric for motion estimation. The proposed method splits the information in the source images into multiple scale and orientation subbands, reduces the subband values to a binary representation via an adaptive thresholding algorithm, and uses mutual information to model the similarity of corresponding square windows in each image. A moving window strategy is applied to recover a dense estimated motion field whose properties are explored. The proposed matching metric is a sum of mutual information scores across space, scale, and orientation. This facilitates the exploitation of information diversity in the source images. Experimental comparisons are performed amongst several related approaches, revealing that the proposed matching metric is better able to exploit information diversity, generating more accurate motion fields. Driven by recent vision and graphics applications such as image segmentation and object recognition, computing pixel-accurate saliency values to uniformly highlight foreground objects becomes increasingly important. In this paper, we propose a unified framework called pixelwise image saliency aggregating (PISA) various bottom-up cues and priors. It generates spatially coherent yet detail-preserving, pixel-accurate, and fine-grained saliency, and overcomes the limitations of previous methods, which use homogeneous superpixel based and color only treatment. PISA aggregates multiple saliency cues in a global context, such as complementary color and structure contrast measures, with their spatial priors in the image domain. The saliency confidence is further jointly modeled with a neighborhood consistence constraint into an energy minimization formulation, in which each pixel will be evaluated with multiple hypothetical saliency levels. Instead of using global discrete optimization methods, we employ the cost-volume filtering technique to solve our formulation, assigning the saliency levels smoothly while preserving the edge-aware structure details. In addition, a faster version of PISA is developed using a gradient-driven image subsampling strategy to greatly improve the runtime efficiency while keeping comparable detection accuracy. Extensive experiments on a number of public data sets suggest that PISA convincingly outperforms other state-of-the-art approaches. Identifying the underlying models in a set of data points that is contaminated by noise and outliers leads to a highly complex multi-model fitting problem. This problem can be posed as a clustering problem by the projection of higher-order affinities between data points into a graph, which can be clustered using spectral clustering. Calculating all possible higher-order affinities is computationally expensive. Hence, in most cases, only a subset is used. In this paper, we propose an effective sampling method for obtaining a highly accurate approximation of the full graph, which is required to solve multi-structural model fitting problems in computer vision. The proposed method is based on the observation that the usefulness of a graph for segmentation improves as the distribution of the hypotheses that are used to build the graph approaches the distribution of the actual parameters for the given data. In this paper, we approximate this actual parameter distribution by using a $k$ th-order statistics-based cost function, and the samples are generated using a greedy algorithm that is coupled with a data sub-sampling strategy. The experimental analysis shows that the proposed method is both accurate and computationally efficient compared with the state-of-the-art robust multi-model fitting techniques. Articulated hand pose estimation is one of core technologies in human–computer interaction. Despite the recent progress, most existing methods still cannot achieve satisfactory performance, partly due to the difficulty of the embedded high-dimensional nonlinear regression problem. Most existing data-driven methods directly regress 3D hand pose from 2D depth image, which cannot fully utilize the depth information. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-view convolutional neural network (CNN)-based approach for 3D hand pose estimation. To better exploit 3D information in the depth image, we project the point cloud generated from the query depth image onto multiple views of two projection settings and integrate them for more robust estimation. Multi-view CNNs are trained to learn the mapping from projected images to heat-maps, which reflect probability distributions of joints on each view. These multi-view heat-maps are then fused to estimate the optimal 3D hand pose with learned pose priors, and the unreliable information in multi-view heat-maps is suppressed using a view selection method. Experimental results show that the proposed method is superior to the state-of-the-art methods on two challenging data sets. Studies on human motion have attracted a lot of attentions. Human motion capture data, which much more precisely records human motion than videos do, has been widely used in many areas. Motion segmentation is an indispensable step for many related applications, but current segmentation methods for motion capture data do not effectively model some important characteristics of motion capture data, such as Riemannian manifold structure and containing non-Gaussian noise. In this paper, we convert the segmentation of motion capture data into a temporal subspace clustering problem. Under the framework of sparse subspace clustering, we propose to use the geodesic exponential kernel to model the Riemannian manifold structure, use correntropy to measure the reconstruction error, use the triangle constraint to guarantee temporal continuity in each cluster and use multi-view reconstruction to extract the relations between different joints. Therefore, exploiting some special characteristics of motion capture data, we propose a new segmentation method, which is robust to non-Gaussian noise, since correntropy is a localized similarity measure. We also develop an efficient optimization algorithm based on block coordinate descent method to solve the proposed model. Our optimization algorithm has a linear complexity while sparse subspace clustering is originally a quadratic problem. Event cameras such as DAVIS can simultaneously output high temporal resolution events and low frame-rate intensity images, which own great potential in capturing scene motion, such as optical flow estimation. Most of the existing optical flow estimation methods are based on two consecutive image frames and can only estimate discrete flow at a fixed time interval. Previous work has shown that continuous flow estimation can be achieved by changing the quantities or time intervals of events. However, they are difficult to estimate reliable dense flow, especially in the regions without any triggered events. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning-based dense and continuous optical flow estimation framework from a single image with event streams, which facilitates the accurate perception of high-speed motion. Specifically, we first propose an event-image fusion and correlation module to effectively exploit the internal motion from two different modalities of data. Then we propose an iterative update network structure with bidirectional training for optical flow prediction. Therefore, our model can estimate reliable dense flow as two-frame-based methods, as well as estimate temporal continuous flow as event-based methods. Extensive experimental results on both synthetic and real captured datasets demonstrate that our model outperforms existing event-based state-of-the-art methods and our designed baselines for accurate dense and continuous optical flow estimation. Person detection has attracted great attention in the computer vision area and is an imperative element in human-centric computer vision. Although the predictive performances of person detection networks have been improved dramatically, they are vulnerable to adversarial patch attacks. Changing the pixels in a restricted region can easily fool the person detection network in safety-critical applications such as autonomous driving and security systems. Despite the necessity of countering adversarial patch attacks, very few efforts have been dedicated to defending person detection against adversarial patch attack. In this paper, we propose a novel defense strategy that defends against an adversarial patch attack by optimizing a defensive frame for person detection. The defensive frame alleviates the effect of the adversarial patch while maintaining person detection performance with clean person. The proposed defensive frame in the person detection is generated with a competitive learning algorithm which makes an iterative competition between detection threatening module and detection shielding module in person detection. Existing crowd counting designs usually exploit multi-branch structures to address the scale diversity problem. However, branches in these structures work in a competitive rather than collaborative way. In this paper, we focus on promoting collaboration between branches. Specifically, we propose an attention-guided collaborative counting module (AGCCM) comprising an attention-guided module (AGM) and a collaborative counting module (CCM). The CCM promotes collaboration among branches by recombining each branch’s output into an independent count and joint counts with other branches. The AGM capturing the global attention map through a transformer structure with a pair of foreground-background related loss functions can distinguish the advantages of different branches. The loss functions do not require additional labels and crowd division. In addition, we design two kinds of bidirectional transformers (Bi-Transformers) to decouple the global attention to row attention and column attention. The proposed Bi-Transformers are able to reduce the computational complexity and handle images in any resolution without cropping the image into small patches. Reading arbitrary-shaped text in an end-to-end fashion has received particularly growing interested in computer vision. In this paper, we study the problem of scene text spotting, which aims to detect and recognize text from cluttered images simultaneously and propose an end-to-end trainable neural network named Boundary TextSpotter. Different from existing methods that describe the shape of text instance with bounding box or shape mask, Boundary TextSpotter formulates it as a set of boundary points. Besides, the representation of such boundary points provides the order of reading text. Benefiting from the representation on both detection and recognition, Boundary TextSpotter can easily deal with the text of arbitrary shapes. Further, to efficiently detect the boundary points of the text, a single-stage text detector is proposed, which can almost perform at a real-time speed. Experiments on three challenging datasets, including ICDAR2015, Total-Text and CTW1500 demonstrate that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art or competitive results, meanwhile significantly improving the inference speed. Many computer vision applications rely on feature detection and description, hence the need for computationally efficient and robust 4D light field (LF) feature detectors and descriptors. In this paper, we propose a novel light field feature descriptor based on the Fourier disparity layer representation, for light field imaging applications. After the Harris feature detection in a scale-disparity space, the proposed feature descriptor is then extracted using a circular neighborhood rather than a square neighborhood. It is shown to yield more accurate feature matching, compared with the LiFF LF feature, with a lower computational complexity. In order to evaluate the feature matching performance with the proposed descriptor, we generated a synthetic stereo LF dataset with ground truth matching points. Experimental results with synthetic and real-world dataset show that our solution outperforms existing methods in terms of both feature detection robustness and feature matching accuracy. Feature matching is a fundamental problem in many computer vision tasks. This paper proposes a novel effective framework for mismatch removal, named LOcality-guided Global-preserving Optimization (LOGO). To identify inliers from a putative matching set generated by feature descriptor similarity, we introduce a fixed-point progressive approach to optimize a graph-based objective, which represents a two-class assignment problem regarding an affinity matrix containing global structures. We introduce a strategy that a small initial set with a high inlier ratio exploits the topology of the affinity matrix to elicit other inliers based on their reliable geometry, which enhances the robustness to outliers. Geometrically, we provide a locality-guided matching strategy, i.e., using local topology consensus as a criterion to determine the initial set, thus expanding to yield the final feature matching set. In addition, we apply local affine transformations based on reference points to determine the local consensus and similarity scores of nodes and edges, ensuring the validity and generality for various scenarios including complex nonrigid transformations. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed LOGO, which is competitive with the current state-of-the-art methods. A holistic understanding of dynamic scenes is of fundamental importance in real-world computer vision problems such as autonomous driving, augmented reality and spatio-temporal reasoning. In this paper, we propose a new computer vision benchmark: Video Panoptic Segmentation (VPS). To study this important problem, we present two datasets, Cityscapes-VPS and VIPER together with a new evaluation metric, video panoptic quality (VPQ). We also propose VPSNet++, an advanced video panoptic segmentation network, which simultaneously performs classification, detection, segmentation, and tracking of all identities in videos. Specifically, VPSNet++ builds upon a top-down panoptic segmentation network by adding pixel-level feature fusion head and object-level association head. The former temporally augments the pixel features while the latter performs object tracking. Furthermore, we propose panoptic boundary learning as an auxiliary task, and instance discrimination learning which learns spatio-temporally clustered pixel embedding for individual thing or stuff regions, i.e., exactly the objective of the video panoptic segmentation problem. Our VPSNet++ significantly outperforms the default VPSNet, i.e., FuseTrack baseline, and achieves state-of-the-art results on both Cityscapes-VPS and VIPER datasets. While humans can effortlessly transform complex visual scenes into simple words and the other way around by leveraging their high-level understanding of the content, conventional or the more recent learned image compression codecs do not seem to utilize the semantic meanings of visual content to their full potential. Moreover, they focus mostly on rate-distortion and tend to underperform in perception quality especially in low bitrate regime, and often disregard the performance of downstream computer vision algorithms, which is a fast-growing consumer group of compressed images in addition to human viewers. In this paper, we (1) present a generic framework that can enable any image codec to leverage high-level semantics and (2) study the joint optimization of perception quality and distortion. Our idea is that given any codec, we utilize high-level semantics to augment the low-level visual features extracted by it and produce essentially a new, semantic-aware codec. We propose a three-phase training scheme that teaches semantic-aware codecs to leverage the power of semantic to jointly optimize rate-perception-distortion (R-PD) performance. As an additional benefit, semantic-aware codecs also boost the performance of downstream computer vision algorithms. Distinguishing between dynamic foreground objects and a mostly static background is a fundamental problem in many computer vision and computer graphics tasks. This paper presents a novel online video background identification method with the assistance of inertial measurement unit (IMU). Based on the fact that the background motion of a video essentially reflects the 3D camera motion, we leverage IMU data to realize a robust camera motion estimation for identifying background feature points by only investigating a few historical frames. We observe that the displacement of the 2D projection of a scene point caused by camera rotation is depth-invariant, and the rotation estimation by using IMU data can be quite accurate. We thus propose to analyze 2D feature points by decomposing the 2D motion into two components: rotation projection and translation projection. In our method, after establishing the 3D camera rotations, we generate the depth-relevant 2D feature point movement induced by the camera 3D translation. Then, by examining the disparity between inter-frame offset and the projection of estimated 3D camera motion, we can identify the background feature points. In the experiments, our online method is able to run at 30FPS with only 1 frame latency and outperforms state-of-the-art background identification and other relevant methods. Glass is very common in the real world. Influenced by the uncertainty about the glass region and the varying complex scenes behind the glass, the existence of glass poses severe challenges to many computer vision tasks, making glass segmentation as an important computer vision task. Glass does not have its own visual appearances but only transmit/reflect the appearances of its surroundings, making it fundamentally different from other common objects. To address such a challenging task, existing methods typically explore and combine useful cues from different levels of features in the deep network. As there exists a characteristic gap between level-different features, i.e., deep layer features embed more high-level semantics and are better at locating the target objects while shallow layer features have larger spatial sizes and keep richer and more detailed low-level information, fusing these features naively thus would lead to a sub-optimal solution. In this paper, we approach the effective features fusion towards accurate glass segmentation in two steps. First, we attempt to bridge the characteristic gap between different levels of features by developing a Discriminability Enhancement (DE) module which enables level-specific features to be a more discriminative representation, alleviating the features incompatibility for fusion. Second, we design a Focus-and-Exploration Based Fusion (FEBF) module to richly excavate useful information in the fusion process by highlighting the common and exploring the difference between level-different features. Combining these two steps, we construct a Progressive Glass Segmentation Network (PGSNet) which uses multiple DE and FEBF modules to progressively aggregate features from high-level to low-level, implementing a coarse-to-fine glass segmentation. In addition, we build the first home-scene-oriented glass segmentation dataset for advancing household robot applications and in-depth research on this topic. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms 26 cutting-edge models on three challenging datasets under four standard metrics. The code and dataset will be made publicly available. Unsupervised active learning has become an active research topic in the machine learning and computer vision communities, whose goal is to choose a subset of representative samples to be labeled in an unsupervised setting. Most of existing approaches rely on shallow linear models by assuming that each sample can be well approximated by the span (i.e., the set of all linear combinations) of the selected samples, and then take these selected samples as the representative ones for manual labeling. However, the data do not necessarily conform to the linear models in many real-world scenarios, and how to model nonlinearity of data often becomes the key point of unsupervised active learning. Moreover, the existing works often aim to well reconstruct the whole dataset, while ignore the important cluster structure, especially for imbalanced data. In this paper, we present a novel deep unsupervised active learning framework. The proposed method can explicitly learn a nonlinear embedding to map each input into a latent space via a deep neural network, and introduce a selection block to select the representative samples in the learnt latent space through a self-supervised learning strategy. In the selection block, we aim to not only preserve the global structure of the data, but also capture the cluster structure of the data in order to well handle the data imbalance issue during sample selection. Meanwhile, we take advantage of the clustering result to provide self-supervised information to guide the above processes. Finally, we attempt to preserve the local structure of the data, such that the data embedding becomes more precise and the model performance can be further improved. Inferring the scene illumination from a single image is an essential yet challenging task in computer vision and computer graphics. Existing works estimate lighting by regressing representative illumination parameters or generating illumination maps directly. However, these methods often suffer from poor accuracy and generalization. This paper presents Geometric Mover’s Light (GMLight), a lighting estimation framework that employs a regression network and a generative projector for effective illumination estimation. We parameterize illumination scenes in terms of the geometric light distribution, light intensity, ambient term, and auxiliary depth, which can be estimated by a regression network. Inspired by the earth mover’s distance, we design a novel geometric mover’s loss to guide the accurate regression of light distribution parameters. With the estimated light parameters, the generative projector synthesizes panoramic illumination maps with realistic appearance and high-frequency details. Extensive experiments show that GMLight achieves accurate illumination estimation and superior fidelity in relighting for 3D object insertion. Tubular structure tracking is a crucial task in the fields of computer vision and medical image analysis. The minimal paths-based approaches have exhibited their strong ability in tracing tubular structures, by which a tubular structure can be naturally modeled as a minimal geodesic path computed with a suitable geodesic metric. However, existing minimal paths-based tracing approaches still suffer from difficulties such as the shortcuts and short branches combination problems, especially when dealing with the images involving complicated tubular tree structures or background. In this paper, we introduce a new minimal paths-based model for minimally interactive tubular structure centerline extraction in conjunction with a perceptual grouping scheme. Basically, we take into account the prescribed tubular trajectories and curvature-penalized geodesic paths to seek suitable shortest paths. The proposed approach can benefit from the local smoothness prior on tubular structures and the global optimality of the used graph-based path searching scheme. Experimental results on both synthetic and real images prove that the proposed model indeed obtains outperformance comparing with the state-of-the-art minimal paths-based tubular structure tracing algorithms. Deconvolutional networks have attracted extensive attention and have been successfully applied in the field of computer vision. In this paper we propose a novel two-branch deconvolutional network (TBDN) that can improve the performance of conventional deconvolutional networks and reduce the computational complexity. A feasible iterative algorithm is designed to solve the optimization problem for the TBDN model, and a theoretical analysis of the convergence and computational complexity for the algorithm is also provided. The application of the TBDN in stereo matching is presented by constructing a disparity estimation network. Along with the outstanding performance of the deep neural networks (DNNs), considerable research efforts have been devoted to finding ways to understand the decision of DNNs structures. In the computer vision domain, visualizing the attribution map is one of the most intuitive and understandable ways to achieve human-level interpretation. Among them, perturbation-based visualization can explain the “black box” property of the given network by optimizing perturbation masks that alter the network prediction of the target class the most. However, existing perturbation methods could make unexpected changes to network predictions after applying a perturbation mask to the input image, resulting in a loss of robustness and fidelity of the perturbation mechanisms. In this paper, we define class distortion as the unexpected changes of the network prediction during the perturbation process. To handle that, we propose a novel visual interpretation framework, Robust Perturbation, which shows robustness against the unexpected class distortion during the mask optimization. With a new cross-checking mask optimization strategy, our proposed framework perturbs the target prediction of the network while upholding the non-target predictions, providing more reliable and accurate visual explanations. We evaluate our framework on three different public datasets through extensive experiments. Furthermore, we propose a new metric for class distortion evaluation. In both quantitative and qualitative experiments, tackling the class distortion problem turns out to enhance the quality and fidelity of the visual explanation in comparison with the existing perturbation-based methods. Recent studies have pointed out that many well-developed Visual Question Answering (VQA) models are heavily affected by the language prior problem. It refers to making predictions based on the co-occurrence pattern between textual questions and answers instead of reasoning upon visual contents. To tackle this problem, most existing methods focus on strengthening the visual feature learning capability to reduce this text shortcut influence on model decisions. However, few efforts have been devoted to analyzing its inherent cause and providing an explicit interpretation. It thus lacks a good guidance for the research community to move forward in a purposeful way, resulting in model construction perplexity towards overcoming this non-trivial problem. In this paper, we propose to interpret the language prior problem in VQA from a class-imbalance view. Concretely, we design a novel interpretation scheme whereby the loss of mis-predicted frequent and sparse answers from the same question type is distinctly exhibited during the late training phase. It explicitly reveals why the VQA model tends to produce a frequent yet obviously wrong answer, to a given question whose right answer is sparse in the training set. Based upon this observation, we further propose a novel loss re-scaling approach to assign different weights to each answer according to the training data statistics for estimating the final loss. We apply our approach into six strong baselines and the experimental results on two VQA-CP benchmark datasets evidently demonstrate its effectiveness. Change detection is one of the most commonly encountered low-level tasks in computer vision and video processing. A plethora of algorithms have been developed to date, yet no widely accepted, realistic, large-scale video data set exists for benchmarking different methods. Presented here is a unique change detection video data set consisting of nearly 90 000 frames in 31 video sequences representing six categories selected to cover a wide range of challenges in two modalities (color and thermal infrared). A distinguishing characteristic of this benchmark video data set is that each frame is meticulously annotated by hand for ground-truth foreground, background, and shadow area boundaries—an effort that goes much beyond a simple binary label denoting the presence of change. This enables objective and precise quantitative comparison and ranking of video-based change detection algorithms. This paper discusses various aspects of the new data set, quantitative performance metrics used, and comparative results for over two dozen change detection algorithms. It draws important conclusions on solved and remaining issues in change detection, and describes future challenges for the scientific community. Estimating optical flow from successive video frames is one of the fundamental problems in computer vision and image processing. In the era of deep learning, many methods have been proposed to use convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for optical flow estimation in an unsupervised manner. However, the performance of unsupervised optical flow approaches is still unsatisfactory and often lagging far behind their supervised counterparts, primarily due to over-smoothing across motion boundaries and occlusion. To address these issues, in this paper, we propose a novel method with a new post-processing term and an effective loss function to estimate optical flow in an unsupervised, end-to-end learning manner. Specifically, we first exploit a CNN-based non-local term to refine the estimated optical flow by removing noise and decreasing blur around motion boundaries. This is implemented via automatically learning weights of dependencies over a large spatial neighborhood. Because of its learning ability, the method is effective for various complicated image sequences. Secondly, to reduce the influence of occlusion, a symmetrical energy formulation is introduced to detect the occlusion map from refined bi-directional optical flows. Then the occlusion map is integrated to the loss function. Extensive experiments are conducted on challenging datasets, i.e. FlyingChairs, MPI-Sintel and KITTI to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. Integer Linear Programming (ILP) formulations of multi-label Markov random fields (MRFs) models with global connectivity priors were investigated previously in computer vision. In these works, only Linear Programming (LP) relaxations or simplified versions of the problem were solved. This paper investigates the ILP of MRF with exact connectivity priors via a branch-and-cut method, which provably finds globally optimal solutions. It enforces connectivity priors iteratively by a cutting plane method, and provides feasible solutions with a guarantee on sub-optimality even if we terminate it earlier. The proposed ILP can be applied as a post-processing method on top of any existing multi-label segmentation approach. As it provides globally optimal solution, it can be used off-line to serve as quality check for any fast on-line algorithm. Furthermore, the scribble based model presented in this paper could be potentially used to generate ground-truth proposals for any deep learning based segmentation. We demonstrate the power and usefulness of our model by extensive experiments on the BSDS500 and PASCAL VOC dataset. The experiments show that our proposed model achieves great performance, yielding provably global optimum in most instances and that provably good optimization solutions also provide good segmentation accuracy, even with the limited computing time of few seconds. Computing the convolution between a 2D signal and a corresponding filter with variable orientations is a basic problem that arises in various tasks ranging from low level image processing (e.g. ridge/edge detection) to high level computer vision (e.g. pattern recognition). Through decades of research, there still lacks an efficient method for solving this problem. In this paper, we investigate this problem from the perspective of approximation by considering the following problem: what is the optimal basis for approximating all rotated versions of a given bivariate function? Surprisingly, solely minimising the $L^{2}$ -approximation-error leads to a rotation-covariant linear expansion, which we name Fourier-Argand representation. This representation presents two major advantages: 1) rotation-covariance of the basis, which implies a “strong steerability” — rotating by an angle $\alpha $ corresponds to multiplying each basis function by a complex scalar $e^{-ik\alpha }$ ; 2) optimality of the Fourier-Argand basis, which ensures a few number of basis functions suffice to accurately approximate complicated patterns and highly direction-selective filters. We show the relation between the Fourier-Argand representation and the Radon transform, leading to an efficient implementation of the decomposition for digital filters. Video captioning is a significant challenging task in computer vision and natural language processing, aiming to automatically describe video content by natural language sentences. Comprehensive understanding of video is the key for accurate video captioning, which needs to not only capture the global content and salient objects in video, but also understand the spatio-temporal relations of objects, including their temporal trajectories and spatial relationships. Thus, it is important for video captioning to capture the objects’ relationships both within and across frames. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an object-aware spatio-temporal graph (OSTG) approach for video captioning. It constructs spatio-temporal graphs to depict objects with their relations, where the temporal graphs represent objects’ inter-frame dynamics, and the spatial graphs represent objects’ intra-frame interactive relationships. The main novelties and advantages are: (1) Bidirectional temporal alignment: Bidirectional temporal graph is constructed along and reversely along the temporal order to perform bidirectional temporal alignment for objects across different frames, which provides complementary clues to capture the inter-frame temporal trajectories for each salient object. (2) Graph based spatial relation learning: Spatial relation graph is constructed among objects in each frame by considering their relative spatial locations and semantic correlations, which is exploited to learn relation features that encode intra-frame relationships for salient objects. (3) Object-aware feature aggregation: Trainable VLAD (vector of locally aggregated descriptors) models are deployed to perform object-aware feature aggregation on objects’ local features, which learn discriminative aggregated representations for better video captioning. A hierarchical attention mechanism is also developed to distinguish contributions of different object instances. Experiments on two widely-used datasets, MSR-VTT and MSVD, demonstrate our proposed approach achieves state-of-the-art performances in terms of BLEU@4, METEOR and CIDEr metrics. Arbitrary shape text spotting remains a challenging computer vision task. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end trainable unified framework for arbitrary shape text spotting to overcome the limitations inherent in the existing methods. Specifically, we propose to perceive and understand text based on different levels of semantics, $i.e$., holistic-, pixel- and sequence-level semantics, and then unify the recognized semantics for robust text spotting. To implement the framework, we customize the detection and mask branches of Mask R-CNN to explore both holistic- and pixel-level semantics for text recognition. According to the recognition results, the text spotting task can then be formulated in the two-dimensional feature space. Then, by feeding the two-dimensional feature maps into an additional text recognition branch, our framework further delivers one-dimensional sequence-level semantics for text recognition based on an attention-based sequence-to-sequence network. Finally, the results from all the three levels of semantics are merged as the final result. Therefore, our framework is capable of simultaneously recognizing texts from both the one- and two-dimensional perspectives, achieving highly comprehensive text recognition. In addition, because some existing datasets lack character-level annotations, the extensive descriptions of texts from our framework further allow us to use only word-level annotations as weak supervision for training a robust text spotting model. Online image hashing aims to update hash functions on-the-fly along with newly arriving data streams, which has found broad applications in computer vision and beyond. To this end, most existing methods update hash functions simply using discrete labels or pairwise similarity to explore intra-class relationships, which, however, often deteriorates search performance when facing a domain gap or semantic shift. One reason is that they ignore the particular semantic relationships among different classes, which should be taken into account in updating hash functions. Besides, the common characteristics between the label vectors (can be regarded as a sort of binary codes) and to-be-learned binary hash codes have left unexploited. In this paper, we present a novel online hashing method, termed Similarity Preserving Linkage Hashing (SPLH), which not only utilizes pairwise similarity to learn the intra-class relationships, but also fully exploits a latent linkage space to capture the inter-class relationships and the common characteristics between label vectors and to-be-learned hash codes. Specifically, SPLH first maps the independent discrete label vectors and binary hash codes into a linkage space, through which the relative semantic distance between data points can be assessed precisely. As a result, the pairwise similarities within the newly arriving data stream are exploited to learn the latent semantic space to benefit binary code learning. To learn the model parameters effectively, we further propose an alternating optimization algorithm. Edge detection is one of the most fundamental operations in the field of image analysis and computer vision as a critical preprocessing step for high-level tasks. It is difficult to give a generic threshold that works well on all images as the image contents are totally different. This paper presents an adaptive, robust and effective edge detector for real-time applications. According to the 2D entropy, the images can be clarified into three groups, each attached with a reference percentage value based on the edge proportion statistics. Compared with the attached points along the gradient direction, anchor points were extracted with high probability to be edge pixels. Taking the segment direction into account, these points were then jointed into different edge segments, each of which was a clean, contiguous, 1-pixel wide chain of pixels. Experimental results indicate that the proposed edge detector outperforms the traditional edge following methods in terms of detection accuracy. Memorability measures how easily an image is to be memorized after glancing, which may contribute to designing magazine covers, tourism publicity materials, and so forth. Recent works have shed light on the visual features that make generic images, object images or face photographs memorable. However, these methods are not able to effectively predict the memorability of outdoor natural scene images. To overcome this shortcoming of previous works, in this paper, we provide an attempt to answer: “what exactly makes outdoor natural scenes memorable”. To this end, we first establish a large-scale outdoor natural scene image memorability (LNSIM) database, containing 2,632 outdoor natural scene images with their ground truth memorability scores and the multi-label scene category annotations. Then, similar to previous works, we mine our database to investigate how low-, middle- and high-level handcrafted features affect the memorability of outdoor natural scenes. In particular, we find that the high-level feature of scene category is rather correlated with outdoor natural scene memorability, and the deep features learnt by deep neural network (DNN) are also effective in predicting the memorability scores. Moreover, combining the deep features with the category feature can further boost the performance of memorability prediction. Therefore, we propose an end-to-end DNN based outdoor natural scene memorability (DeepNSM) predictor, which takes advantage of the learned category-related features. Then, the experimental results validate the effectiveness of our DeepNSM model, exceeding the state-of-the-art methods. Finally, we try to understand the reason of the good performance for our DeepNSM model, and also study the cases that our DeepNSM model succeeds or fails to accurately predict the memorability of outdoor natural scenes. Convolutional operator learning is gaining attention in many signal processing and computer vision applications. Learning kernels has mostly relied on so-called patch-domain approaches that extract and store many overlapping patches across training signals. Due to memory demands, patch-domain methods have limitations when learning kernels from large datasets – particularly with multi-layered structures, e.g., convolutional neural networks – or when applying the learned kernels to high-dimensional signal recovery problems. The so-called convolution approach does not store many overlapping patches, and thus overcomes the memory problems particularly with careful algorithmic designs; it has been studied within the “synthesis” signal model, e.g., convolutional dictionary learning. This paper proposes a new convolutional analysis operator learning (CAOL) framework that learns an analysis sparsifying regularizer with the convolution perspective, and develops a new convergent Block Proximal Extrapolated Gradient method using a Majorizer (BPEG-M) to solve the corresponding block multi-nonconvex problems. To learn diverse filters within the CAOL framework, this paper introduces an orthogonality constraint that enforces a tight-frame filter condition, and a regularizer that promotes diversity between filters. Numerical experiments show that, with sharp majorizers, BPEG-M significantly accelerates the CAOL convergence rate compared to the state-of-the-art block proximal gradient (BPG) method. Numerical experiments for sparse-view computational tomography show that a convolutional sparsifying regularizer learned via CAOL significantly improves reconstruction quality compared to a conventional edge-preserving regularizer. Pothole detection is one of the most important tasks for road maintenance. Computer vision approaches are generally based on either 2D road image analysis or 3D road surface modeling. However, these two categories are always used independently. Furthermore, the pothole detection accuracy is still far from satisfactory. Therefore, in this paper, we present a robust pothole detection algorithm that is both accurate and computationally efficient. A dense disparity map is first transformed to better distinguish between damaged and undamaged road areas. To achieve greater disparity transformation efficiency, golden section search and dynamic programming are utilized to estimate the transformation parameters. Otsu’s thresholding method is then used to extract potential undamaged road areas from the transformed disparity map. The disparities in the extracted areas are modeled by a quadratic surface using least squares fitting. To improve disparity map modeling robustness, the surface normal is also integrated into the surface modeling process. Furthermore, random sample consensus is utilized to reduce the effects caused by outliers. By comparing the difference between the actual and modeled disparity maps, the potholes can be detected accurately. Finally, the point clouds of the detected potholes are extracted from the reconstructed 3D road surface. The experimental results show that the successful detection accuracy of the proposed system is around 98.7% and the overall pixel-level accuracy is approximately 99.6%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Superpixel segmentation of 2D images has been widely used in many computer vision tasks. Previous algorithms model the color, position, or higher spectral information for segmenting a 2D image. However, limited to the Gaussian imaging principle in a traditional camera, where each pixel is formed by summing lots of light rays from different angles, there is not a thorough segmentation solution to eliminate the ambiguity in defocus and occlusion boundary areas. In this paper, we consider the essential element of image pixel, i.e., rays in light space, and propose light field superpixel (LFSP) to eliminate the ambiguity. The LFSP is first defined mathematically and then two evaluation metrics, named LFSP self-similarity and effective label ratio, are proposed to evaluate the refocus-invariant and full-sliced properties of segmentation. By building a clique system containing 80 neighbors in light field, a robust refocus-invariant LFSP segmentation algorithm is developed. Experimental results on both synthetic and real light field datasets demonstrate the advantages over the current state of the art in terms of traditional evaluation metrics. Additionally, the LFSP self-similarity evaluations under different light field refocus levels show the refocus-invariance of the proposed algorithm. The full-sliced property of the proposed LFSP algorithm is verified by comparing it with the classical supervoxel algorithms. Mismatch removal is a key step in many computer vision problems. In this paper, we handle the mismatch removal problem by adopting shape interaction matrix (SIM). Given the homogeneous coordinates of the two corresponding point sets, we first compute the SIMs of the two point sets. Then, we detect the mismatches by picking out the most different entries between the two SIMs. Even under strong affine transformations, outliers, noises, and burstiness, our method can still work well. Actually, this paper is the first non-iterative mismatch removal method that achieves affine invariance. Extensive results on synthetic 2D points matching data sets and real image matching data sets verify the effectiveness, efficiency, and robustness of our method in removing mismatches. Moreover, when applied to partial-duplicate image search, our method reaches higher retrieval precisions with shorter time cost compared with the state-of-the-art geometric verification methods. Graph cuts are widely used in computer vision. To speed up the optimization process and improve the scalability for large graphs, Strandmark and Kahl introduced a splitting method to split a graph into multiple subgraphs for parallel computation in both shared and distributed memory models. However, this parallel algorithm (the parallel BK-algorithm) does not have a polynomial bound on the number of iterations and is found to be non-convergent in some cases due to the possible multiple optimal solutions of its sub-problems. To remedy this non-convergence problem, in this paper, we first introduce a merging method capable of merging any number of those adjacent sub-graphs that can hardly reach agreement on their overlapping regions in the parallel BK-algorithm. Based on the pseudo-boolean representations of graph cuts, our merging method is shown to be effectively reused all the computed flows in these sub-graphs. Through both splitting and merging, we further propose a dynamic parallel and distributed graph cuts algorithm with guaranteed convergence to the globally optimal solutions within a predefined number of iterations. In essence, this paper provides a general framework to allow more sophisticated splitting and merging strategies to be employed to further boost performance. Learning similarity of two images is an important problem in computer vision and has many potential applications. Most of the previous works focus on generating image similarities in three aspects: global feature distance computing, local feature matching, and image concepts comparison. However, the task of directly detecting the class agnostic common objects from two images has not been studied before, which goes one step further to capture image similarities at the region level. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end image Common Object Detection Network (CODN) to detect class agnostic common objects from two images. The proposed method consists of two main modules: locating module and matching module. The locating module generates candidate proposals of each two images. The matching module learns the similarities of the candidate proposal pairs from two images, and refines the bounding boxes of the candidate proposals. The learning procedure of CODN is implemented in an integrated way and a multi-task loss is designed to guarantee both region localization and common object matching. Defocus blur detection is an important and challenging task in computer vision and digital imaging fields. Previous work on defocus blur detection has put a lot of effort into designing local sharpness metric maps. This paper presents a simple yet effective method to automatically obtain the local metric map for defocus blur detection, which based on the feature learning of multiple convolutional neural networks (ConvNets). The ConvNets automatically learn the most locally relevant features at the super-pixel level of the image in a supervised manner. By extracting convolution kernels from the trained neural network structures and processing it with principal component analysis, we can automatically obtain the local sharpness metric by reshaping the principal component vector. Meanwhile, an effective iterative updating mechanism is proposed to refine the defocus blur detection result from coarse to fine by exploiting the intrinsic peculiarity of the hyperbolic tangent function. Action recognition has been extensively researched in computer vision due to its potential applications in a broad range of areas. The key to action recognition lies in modeling actions and measuring their similarity, which however poses great challenges. In this paper, we propose learning match kernels between actions on Grassmann manifold for action recognition. Specifically, we propose modeling actions as a linear subspace on the Grassmann manifold; the subspace is a set of convolutional neural network (CNN) feature vectors pooled temporally over frames in semantic video clips, which simultaneously captures local discriminant patterns and temporal dynamics of motion. To measure the similarity between actions, we propose Grassmann match kernels (GMK) based on canonical correlations of linear subspaces to directly match videos for action recognition; GMK is learned in a supervised way via kernel target alignment, which is endowed with a great discriminative ability to distinguish actions from different classes. The proposed approach leverages the strengths of CNNs for feature extraction and kernels for measuring similarity, which accomplishes a general learning framework of match kernels for action recognition. We have conducted extensive experiments on five challenging realistic data sets including Youtube, UCF50, UCF101, Penn action, and HMDB51. The proposed approach achieves high performance and substantially surpasses the state-of-the-art algorithms by large margins, which demonstrates the great effectiveness of proposed approach for action recognition. Mismatch removal is a key step in many computer vision problems that involve point matching. The existing methods for checking geometric consistency mainly focus on similarity or affine transformations. In this paper, we propose a novel mismatch removal method that can cope with the projective transformation between two corresponding point sets. Our approach is based on the augmented homogeneous coordinates matrix constructed from the coordinates of anchor matches, whose degeneracy can indicate the correctness of anchor matches. The set of anchor matches is initially all the matches and is iteratively updated by calculating the difference between the estimated matched points, which can be easily computed in a closed form, and the actually matched points and removing those with large differences. Experimental results on synthetic 2D point matching data sets and real image matching data sets verify that our method achieves the highest $F$ -score among all the methods under similarity, affine, and projective transformations with noises and outliers. Our method can also achieve faster speed than all other iterative methods. Those non-iterative methods with slight advantage in speed are not competitive in accuracy when compared with ours. We also show that the set of anchor matches is stable through the iteration and the computation time grows very slowly with respect to the number of matched points. Many analysis-based regularizations proposed so far employ a common prior information, i.e., edges in an image are sparse. However, in local edge regions and texture regions, this prior may not hold. As a result, the performance of regularizations based on the edge sparsity may be unsatisfactory in such regions for image-related inverse problems. These regularizations tend to smooth out the edges while eliminating the noise. In other words, these regularizations’ abilities of preserving edges are limited. In this paper, a new prior that the corner points in a natural image are sparse was proposed to construct regularizations. Intuitively, even in local edge regions and texture regions, the sparsity of corner points may still exist, and hence, the regularizations based on it can achieve better performance than those based on the edge sparsity. As an example, by utilizing the sparsity of corner points, we proposed a new regularization based on Noble’s corner measure function. Our experiments demonstrated the excellent performance of the proposed regularization for both image denoising and deblurring problems, especially in local edge regions and texture regions. Foreground and background cues can assist humans in quickly understanding visual scenes. In computer vision, however, it is difficult to detect salient objects when they touch the image boundary. Hence, detecting salient objects robustly under such circumstances without sacrificing precision and recall can be challenging. In this paper, we propose a novel model for salient region detection, namely, the foreground-center-background (FCB) saliency model. Its main highlights as follows. First, we use regional color volume as the foreground, together with perceptually uniform color differences within regions to detect salient regions. This can highlight salient objects robustly, even when they touched the image boundary, without greatly sacrificing precision and recall. Second, we employ center saliency to detect salient regions together with foreground and background cues, which improves saliency detection performance. Finally, we propose a novel and simple yet efficient method that combines foreground, center, and background saliency. Experimental validation with three well-known benchmark data sets indicates that the FCB model outperforms several state-of-the-art methods in terms of precision, recall, F-measure, and particularly, the mean absolute error. In this paper a special class of functions called smoothlets is presented. They are defined as a generalization of wedgelets and second-order wedgelets. Unlike all known geometrical methods used in adaptive image approximation, smoothlets are continuous functions. They can adapt to location, size, rotation, curvature, and smoothness of edges. The M-term approximation of smoothlets is O(M^-3). In this paper, an image compression scheme based on the smoothlet transform is also presented. From the theoretical considerations and experiments, both described in the paper, it follows that smoothlets can assure better image compression than the other known adaptive geometrical methods, namely, wedgelets and second-order wedgelets. Entropy-based divergence measures have proven their effectiveness in many areas of computer vision and pattern recognition. However, the complexity of their implementation might be prohibitive in resource-limited applications, as they require estimates of probability densities which are expensive to compute directly for high-dimensional data. In this paper, we investigate the usage of a non-parametric distribution-free metric, known as the Henze–Penrose test statistic to obtain bounds for the $k$ -nearest neighbors ($k$ -NN) classification accuracy. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and the reliability of this metric in estimating the inter-class separability. While action recognition has become an important line of research in computer vision, the recognition of particular events, such as aggressive behaviors, or fights, has been relatively less studied. These tasks may be extremely useful in several video surveillance scenarios, such as psychiatric wards, prisons, or even in personal camera smartphones. Their potential usability has led to a surge of interest in developing fight or violence detectors. One of the key aspects in this case is efficiency, that is, these methods should be computationally fast. “Handcrafted” spatio-temporal features that account for both motion and appearance information can achieve high accuracy rates, albeit the computational cost of extracting some of those features is still prohibitive for practical applications. The deep learning paradigm has been recently applied for the first time to this task too, in the form of a 3D convolutional neural network that processes the whole video sequence as input. However, results in human perception of other’s actions suggest that, in this specific task, motion features are crucial. This means that using the whole video as input may add both redundancy and noise in the learning process. In this paper, we propose a hybrid “handcrafted/learned” feature framework which provides better accuracy than the previous feature learning method, with similar computational efficiency. A large number of saliency models, each based on a different hypothesis, have been proposed over the past 20 years. In practice, while subscribing to one hypothesis or computational principle makes a model that performs well on some types of images, it hinders the general performance of a model on arbitrary images and large-scale data sets. One natural approach to improve overall saliency detection accuracy would then be fusing different types of models. In this paper, inspired by the success of late-fusion strategies in semantic analysis and multi-modal biometrics, we propose to fuse the state-of-the-art saliency models at the score level in a para-boosting learning fashion. First, saliency maps generated by several models are used as confidence scores. Then, these scores are fed into our para-boosting learner (i.e., support vector machine, adaptive boosting, or probability density estimator) to generate the final saliency map. In order to explore the strength of para-boosting learners, traditional transformation-based fusion strategies, such as Sum, Min, and Max, are also explored and compared in this paper. To further reduce the computation cost of fusing too many models, only a few of them are considered in the next step. Experimental results show that score-level fusion outperforms each individual model and can further reduce the performance gap between the current models and the human inter-observer model. Recognizing human activities from videos is a fundamental research problem in computer vision. Recently, there has been a growing interest in analyzing human behavior from data collected with wearable cameras. First-person cameras continuously record several hours of their wearers’ life. To cope with this vast amount of unlabeled and heterogeneous data, novel algorithmic solutions are required. In this paper, we propose a multitask clustering framework for activity of daily living analysis from visual data gathered from wearable cameras. Our intuition is that, even if the data are not annotated, it is possible to exploit the fact that the tasks of recognizing everyday activities of multiple individuals are related, since typically people perform the same actions in similar environments, e.g., people working in an office often read and write documents). In our framework, rather than clustering data from different users separately, we propose to look for clustering partitions which are coherent among related tasks. In particular, two novel multitask clustering algorithms, derived from a common optimization problem, are introduced. Our experimental evaluation, conducted both on synthetic data and on publicly available first-person vision data sets, shows that the proposed approach outperforms several single-task and multitask learning methods.
