Microwave radiometers measure weak thermal emission from the Earth, which is broadband in nature. Radio frequency interference (RFI) originates from active transmitters and is typically narrow band, directional, and continuous or intermittent. The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Microwave Imager (GMI) has seen RFI caused by ocean reflections from direct broadcast and communication satellites in the shared 18.7-GHz allocated band. This paper focuses on the use of a complex signal kurtosis algorithm to detect direct broadcast satellite (DBS) signals at 18.7 GHz. An experiment was conducted in August 2017 at the Harvest oil platform, located about 10 km off the coast of central California. Data were collected for direct and ocean reflected DBS transmissions in the K- and Ku-bands from a commercial geostationary satellite. Results are presented for the complex kurtosis performance for a five-channel quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signal versus the seven-channel case. As the spectrum becomes more occupied, detector performance decreases. Filtering of RFI in the fully occupied spectrum is very difficult, and detection using the complex kurtosis detector is only possible for very large interference-to-noise ratio (INR) values at −5 dB and higher. As compared with conventional methods for measuring ocean surface currents, spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) offers cloud-penetrating ocean-current observation capability at high spatial resolution. While some studies have shown the potential of SAR for studying ocean surface currents through feature tracking, they have only analyzed a few images to demonstrate the basic measurement technique, and no concise general technique has been developed. This paper shows the application of the maximum cross correlation (MCC) method to generate ocean surface currents from nearly two years of available sequential spaceborne C-band SAR imagery from the Envisat ASAR and ERS-2 Advanced Microwave Instrument SAR sensors over the coastal California Current System. The data processing strategies are discussed in detail, and results are compared with HF radar measured currents. One-dimensional wavenumber spectra of the SAR-derived surface currents agree with the k-2 power law, as predicted by sub mesoscale resolution models. Comparisons with HF radar currents show encouraging results with MCC SAR vectors oriented slightly counterclockwise relative to HF radar vectors. MCC SAR surface currents are found to have larger magnitudes than HF radar currents (≈11 cm/s), which may be due to the fact that SAR penetrates only a few centimetres into the ocean surface whereas HF radar currents are averaged over the top 1 m of the ocean surface. The larger part of this magnitude difference is contained in the along-shore component, which can be attributed to higher HF radar accuracy in the direct radial cross-shore measurements as compared with along-shore components derived from multiple cross-shore radial measurements. The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) is one of the key environmental remote-sensing instruments onboard the Suomi National Polar-Orbiting Partnership spacecraft, which was successfully launched on October 28, 2011 from the Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. Following a series of spacecraft and sensor activation operations, the VIIRS nadir door was opened on November 21, 2011. The first VIIRS image acquired signifies a new generation of operational moderate resolution-imaging capabilities following the legacy of the advanced very high-resolution radiometer series on NOAA satellites and Terra and Aqua Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer for NASA's Earth Observing system. VIIRS provides significant enhancements to the operational environmental monitoring and numerical weather forecasting, with 22 imaging and radiometric bands covering wavelengths from 0.41 to 12.5 microns, providing the sensor data records for 23 environmental data records including aerosol, cloud properties, fire, albedo, snow and ice, vegetation, sea surface temperature, ocean color, and nigh-time visible-light-related applications. Preliminary results from the on-orbit verification in the postlaunch check-out and intensive calibration and validation have shown that VIIRS is performing well and producing high-quality images. This paper provides an overview of the on-orbit performance of VIIRS, the calibration/validation (cal/val) activities and methodologies used. It presents an assessment of the sensor initial on-orbit calibration and performance based on the efforts from the VIIRS-SDR team. Field measurements of dielectric properties of hypersaline deposits were realized over an arid site located in Death Valley, CA. The dielectric constant of salt and water mixtures is usually high but can show large variations, depending on the considered salt. We confirmed values observed on the field with laboratory measurements and used these results to model both the amplitude and phase behaviors of the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) signal at C- and L-bands. Our analytical simulations allow reproducing specific copolar signatures observed in both Airborne SAR (AIRSAR) and Spaceborne Imaging Radar (SIR-C) data, corresponding to the saltpan of the Cottonball Basin. More precisely, the main objective of the present paper is to understand the influence of soil salinity as a function of soil moisture on the dielectric constant of soils and then on the backscattering coefficients recorded by airborne and spaceborne SAR systems. We also propose the copolarized backscattering ratio and phase difference as indicators of moistened and salt-affected soils. More precisely, we show that these copolar indicators should allow monitoring of the seasonal variations of the dielectric properties of saline deposits at both C- and L-bands. Because of the frequency dependence of the ionic conductivity, we also show that L-band SAR systems should be efficient tools for detecting both soil moisture and salinity, while C-band SAR systems are more suitable for the monitoring of soil moisture only. Through the study of terrestrial evaporitic environments by means of spaceborne SAR systems, our results could also be of great interest for defining future planetary missions, particularly for the exploration of Mars. The Cerro Prieto geothermal field (CPGF) lies at the step-over between the imperial and the Cerro Prieto faults in northern Baja California, Mexico. While tectonically this is the most active section of the southern San Andreas Fault system, the spatial and temporal deformation in the area is poorly resolved by the sparse global positioning system (GPS) network coverage. Moreover, interferograms from satellite observations spanning more than a few months are decorrelated due to the extensive agricultural activity in this region. Here we investigate the use of frequent, short temporal baseline interferograms offered by the new Sentinel-1A satellite to recover two components of deformation time series across these faults. Following previous studies, we developed a purely geometric approach for image alignment that achieves better than 1/200 pixel alignment needed for accurate phase recovery. We construct interferometric synthetic aperture radar time series using a coherence-based small baseline subset method with atmospheric corrections by means of common-point stacking. We did not apply enhanced spectral diversity because the burst discontinuities are generally small (<1.4 mm) and can be effectively captured during the atmospheric corrections. With these algorithms, the subsidence at CPGF is clearly resolved. The maximum subsidence rate of 160 mm/yr, due to extraction of geothermal fluids and heat, dominates the ~40 mm/yr deformation across the proximal ends of the imperial, the Cerro Prieto, and the indiviso faults. Sea surface nitrate (SSN) is an important parameter to characterize physical and biogeochemical processes, particularly to quantify oceanic new primary production, yet its remote estimation from satellite has been difficult due to the complex relationships between environmental variables and SSN. In the central and southern sections of the California Current System (CSCCS), this challenge is attempted through modeling, validation, and extensive tests in different oceanic scenarios. Specifically, using extensive SSN datasets collected by many cruises spanning 40 years (1978–2018) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) estimated sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a (Chl), a stacking random forest (SRF) model of SSN has been developed and validated with a spatial resolution of ~4 km. The model showed an overall performance of root mean square difference (RMSD) $=0.83\,\,\mu $ mol/kg, with coefficient of determination ($R^{2}) =0.87$ , mean bias $= -0.11\,\,\mu $ mol/kg, and mean ratio = 1.15 for SSN ranging between 0.05 and $19.90~\mu $ mol/kg ($N =1034$). Furthermore, tests of the model with its original parameterization for the upwelling period, oceanic period, and winter period all showed satisfactory performance with an overall RMSD of 1.95 $\mu $ mol/kg. The sensitivity of the SRF model to uncertainties of MODIS SST and Chl was examined, with induced uncertainties of $\le 2.22~\mu $ mol/kg. The extensive evaluation and sensitivity tests indicated the robustness of the SRF model in estimating SSN in the study area of the CSCCS, and it could serve as a robust approach for other regions once sufficient in situ SSN data are available for model calibration. Sun glint obscures the radiance originating from within the water, but it also mirrors the solar radiance after transmission through the atmosphere. The difference between a glint-contaminated pixel and a nearby nonglint pixel from a spectral image prior to atmospheric correction yields a direct estimate of the spectral transmission of solar radiance which can then be used both to confirm atmospheric models and to retrieve an estimate of remote sensing reflectance. Temporal decorrelation is one of the main limitations for recovering interseismic deformation along the San Andreas Fault system using interferometric synthetic aperture radar. To assess the improved correlation properties of L-band with respect to C-band, we analyzed L-band Advanced Land Observation Satellite (ALOS) interferograms with a range of temporal and spatial baselines over three vegetated areas in California and compared them with corresponding C-band European Remote Sensing Satellite (ERS) interferograms. Over the highly vegetated Northern California forests in the Coast Range area, ALOS remains remarkably well correlated over a 2-year period, whereas an ERS interferogram with a similar temporal and spatial baseline lost correlation. In Central California near Parkfield, we found a similar pattern in decorrelation behavior, which enabled the recovery of a fault creep and a local uplifting signal at L-band that was not apparent at C-band. In the Imperial Valley in Southern California, both ALOS and ERS have low correlation over farmlands. ALOS has lower correlation over some sandy surfaces than ERS, probably due to low signal-to-noise ratio. In general, L-band interferograms with similar seasonal acquisitions have higher correlation than those with dissimilar season. For both L- and C-band, correlation over vegetated areas decreases with time for intervals less than 1 year and then remains relatively constant at longer time intervals. The decorrelation time for L-band is more than 2 years in the forest in California whereas that for C-band is less than 6 months. Overall, these results suggest that L-band interferograms will reveal near-fault interseismic deformation once sufficient data become available. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ten underflights of the Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS) with Conical Scanning Millimeter-wave Imaging Radiometer (CoSMIR) onboard the NASA ER-2 aircraft were conducted over the coastal region of California between March 2004 and March 2005. The measured brightness temperature (Tb) values from both sensors are collocated and compared at frequencies of 50.3, 52.8, 53.6, 91.655, 150, 183.3 ± 1,183.3 ± 3, and 183.3 ± 6.6 GHz. The more transparent channels at 50.3, 91.655, and 150 GHz are strongly affected by the changes in surface emission and low-level liquid clouds. Thus, the average differences in Tb values (δTb), measured by the two sensors, and their changes from flight to flight are difficult to assess. For the remaining opaque channels, using the CoSMIR measurements as reference, the lowest SSMIS Tb values occur when the SSMIS is completely under the Earth's shadow. As the satellite moves out of the Earth's shadow in the ascending passes, the SSMIS Tb values are found to gradually increase with more exposure to the sun. The magnitudes of these Tb changes are about 4-5 K for the three 183.3-GHz channels and about 2 K for the 52.8- and 53.6-GHz channels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The standard atmospheric correction algorithm for the five thermal infrared (TIR) bands of the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) is based on radiative transfer calculation using the MODTRAN code. Atmospheric profiles input to MODTRAN are extracted from either the Global Data Assimilation System (GDAS) product or the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) climatology model. The present study provides validation results of this algorithm. First, in situ lake surface temperatures measured in 13 vicarious calibration (VC) experiments were compared with surface temperatures retrieved from ASTER data. As the results, the mean bias was 0.8 and 1.8 K for GDAS and NRL, respectively. The NRL model performed worse than GDAS for four experiments at Salton Sea, CA, probably because the model was not suitable for this site, which has typically higher surface temperature and humidity than other VC sites. Next, the algorithm was validated based on the max-min difference (MMD) of water surface emissivity retrieved from each of 163 scenes acquired globally. As a result, the algorithm error increased quadratically with the precipitable water vapor (PWV) content of the atmosphere, and the expected MMD error was 0.049 and 0.067 for GDAS and NRL, respectively, with a PWV of 3 cm, where 0.05 on MMD is roughly corresponding to -0.8 or +2.3 K on the retrieved surface temperature error. The algorithm performance degraded markedly when the surface temperature exceeded about 25°C, particularly for NRL. Consequently, GDAS performs better than NRL as expected, while both will perform less well for humid conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Multispectral Thermal Imager (MTI) is a 15-band satellite-based imaging system. Two of the bands (J, K) are located in the mid-infrared (3-5 μm) wavelength region: J, 33-4.1 μm and K, 4.9-5.1 μm, and three of the bands (L, M, N) are located in the thermal infrared (8-12 μm) wavelength region: L, 8.0-8.4 μm; M, 8.4-8.8 μm; and N, 10.2-10.7 μm. The absolute radiometric accuracy of the MTI data acquired in bands J-N was assessed over a period of approximately three years using data from the Lake Tahoe, CA/NV automated validation site. Assessment involved using a radiative transfer model to propagate surface skin temperature measurements made at the lime of the MTI overpass to predict the vicarious at-sensor radiance. The vicarious at-sensor radiance was convolved with the MTI system response functions to obtain the vicarious at-sensor MI! radiance in bands J-N. The vicarious radiances were then compared with the instrument measured radiances. In order to avoid any reflected solar contribution in the mid-infrared bands, only nighttime scenes were used in the analysis of bands J and K. Twelve cloud-free scenes were used in the analysis of the data from the mid-infrared bands (J, K), and 23 cloud-free scenes were used in the analysis of the thermal infrared bands (L, M, N). The scenes had skin temperatures ranging between 4.4 and 18.6 °C. The skin temperature was found to be, on average, 0.18 ± 0.36 °C cooler than the bulk temperature during the day and 0.65 ± 0.31 °C cooler than the bulk temperature at night. The smaller skin effect during the day was attributed to solar heating. The mean and standard deviation of the percent differences between the vicarious (predicted) at-sensor radiance convolved to the MTI bandpasses and the MTI measured radiances were -1.38 ± 2.32, -2.46 ± 1.96, -0.04 ± 0.78, -1.97 ± 0.62, -1.59 ± 0.55 for bands J-N, respectively. From spectral solar irradiance extinction measuresments in the visible range carried out at Sierra Nevada (2950 m a.s.l.) during July 1998, the characteristics of the aerosol column in the free troposphere have been measured. The results show that in stable atmospheric conditions, the column-integrated aerosol takes an optical depth (AOD) at 500 nm of 0.02 ± 0.02, and an average radius in the accumulation mode of 015 μm, with a likely Atlantic origin. In unstable situations, the AOD at 500 nm can increase by more than an order of magnitude, and the aerosols' origin is uncertain, since air masses can arrive from different sources at different altitudes.
