The advanced MEdium Resolution Spectral Imager (MERSI II) is a major instrument onboard the Chinese FengYun 3D satellite, which was launched in November 2017. Extensive measurements were performed during MERSI II prelaunch testing to ensure effective characterization for on-orbit calibration. This paper gives a brief overview of the prelaunch performance testing conducted for MERSI II, as well as its improvements in terms of instrument design compared to MERSI I. The prelaunch calibration methodology and radiometric performance are detailed, including dynamic range, signal-to-noise ratio, noise equivalent differential temperature, linearity, and response uniformity. The assessment results indicate that most bands perform effectively with mirror specification noncompliances in a few reflective solar bands (RSBs). In addition, investigation of the stability and uniformity of the spherical integrating source indicates that they have a critical impact on the performance assessment and prelaunch calibration of RSBs. The temperature-dependence features of thermal emissive bands’ performances are also discussed in terms of their sensitivity to the operating temperature of the focal plane assembly and instrument circumstance. Terrestrial laser scanning is a promising tool for estimating leaf angle (including leaf inclination and azimuthal angles) distribution (LAD). However, previous studies focus on the retrieval of leaf inclination angle distribution, very few studies have considered the distribution of leaf azimuthal angle due to the restriction of measurement techniques. In this paper, we developed a new method to obtain more accurate leaf inclination and azimuthal angle estimations based on leaf point cloud segmentation and filtration and then fit LAD functions using two-parameter Beta-distribution model. In addition, we constructed a new projection coefficient model with two parameters $G(\theta $ , $\varphi$) using Nilson’s algorithm based on the accurate retrieval of LAD. To assess the influence of leaf numbers on leaf inclination and azimuthal angle estimations, we modeled 160 individual leaves and 10 trees with different leaf numbers. In addition, to validate the final results, we also sampled three magnolia trees with different leaf numbers and manually measured leaf inclination and azimuthal angles of all their leaves using an angle measurement device. All results showed that the method proposed in this paper can provide accurate leaf inclination and azimuthal angles (leaf inclination angle: $R^{2} = 0.98$ , RMSE = 24° and leaf azimuthal angle: $R^{2} = 0.99$ , RMSE = 3.44°). The simulated LAD and $G(\theta $ , $\varphi$) estimations based on these leaf inclination and azimuthal angles were strongly correlated with those obtained from ground truth measurements ($P >0.05$). Feature matching, which refers to establishing reliable correspondences between two sets of feature points, is a critical prerequisite in feature-based image registration. This paper proposes a simple yet surprisingly effective approach, termed as guided locality preserving matching, for robust feature matching of remote sensing images. The key idea of our approach is merely to preserve the neighborhood structures of potential true matches between two images. We formulate it into a mathematical model, and derive a simple closed-form solution with linearithmic time and linear space complexities. This enables our method to accomplish the mismatch removal from thousands of putative correspondences in only a few milliseconds. To handle extremely large proportions of outliers, we further design a guided matching strategy based on the proposed method, using the matching result on a small putative set with a high inlier ratio to guide the matching on a large putative set. This strategy can also significantly boost the true matches without sacrifice in accuracy. Experiments on various real remote sensing image pairs demonstrate the generality of our method for handling both rigid and nonrigid image deformations, and it is more than two orders of magnitude faster than the state-of-the-art methods with better accuracy, making it practical for real-time applications. Image decolorization is known to be an effective way in transferring a color image into a gray one while well preserving the major information of all three bands. In this paper, a simple yet effective hyperspectral image visualization framework based on decolorization, named decolorization based hyperspectral visualization, is proposed, which enables us to fully exploit the benefits of decolorization technique. The proposed framework consists of the following two main steps. First, the hyperspectral image is partitioned into nine subsets of adjacent hyperspectral bands and the averaged band of each subset is calculated. Then, the dimension reduced image is further divided into three groups of adjacent bands, and the bands in each group are fused by using an image decolorization method. The main contribution of this paper is that the strong correlations in two different fields, i.e., image decolorization and hyperspectral image visualization, are first built. Experiments performed on several real hyperspectral data sets demonstrate that the proposed framework can obtain outstanding visualization performance in terms of both subjective and objective evaluations. Super-resolution image reconstruction has been utilized to overcome the problem of spatial resolution limitation in hyperspectral (HS) imaging. To improve the spatial resolution of HS image, this paper proposes an HS-multispectral (MS) fusion method, which exploits spatial and spectral correlations and proper regularization. High spatial correlation between MS image and the desired high-resolution HS image is conserved via an over-completed dictionary, and the spectral degradation between them projected onto the space of sparsity is applied as the spectral constraint. The high spectral correlation between high-spatial- and low-spatial-resolution HS image is preserved through linear spectral unmixing. The idea of an interactive feedback proposed in our previous work is also used when dealing with spatial reconstruction and unmixing. Low-rank property is introduced in this paper to regularize the sparse coefficients of the HS patch matrix, which is utilized as the spatial constraint. Experiments on both simulated and real data sets demonstrate that the proposed fusion algorithm achieves lower spectral distortions and the super-resolution results are superior to those of other state-of-the-art methods. The aim of this paper is to interpret and characterize the changes of the 3-D polarimetric scattering signatures of agricultural crops at C-band and to relate them to temporal changes of the soil and plant parameters. For this, a time series of multibaseline (MB) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data acquired at C-band by the airborne F-SAR system of the German Aerospace Center over the Wallerfing test site in Germany was analyzed. The availability of MB SAR data enables the resolution of scattering contributions in height by means of SAR tomography. The tomographic profiles at different polarizations were analyzed regarding temporal changes for different crop types. First, it was investigated if the center of mass (CoM) of the vertical reflectivity profiles as a single parameter enables the tracking of changes in soil and vegetation. The results show that the vertical reflectivity profiles and their CoM do not allow resolving the ambiguity if a change originates from soil or vegetation dynamics as expected. Thus, the scattering contributions from ground and volume were separated in height, using a filtering approach, and used for the estimation of the ground and volume scattering powers by means of covariance matching. Comparing the outputs with coincident ground measurements showed that dielectric as well as geometric changes in the vegetation are traceable by the separated ground and volume powers. Finally, the estimated powers were analyzed with respect to orientation effects, i.e., to polarimetric anisotropic behavior. They were found to be not significant for the crops under study at C-band. Contemporary surveillance systems mainly use video cameras as their primary sensor. However, video cameras possess fundamental deficiencies, such as the inability to handle low-light environments, poor weather conditions, and concealing clothing. In contrast, radar devices are able to sense in pitch-dark environments and to see through walls. In this paper, we investigate the use of micro-Doppler (MD) signatures retrieved from a low-power radar device to identify a set of persons based on their gait characteristics. To that end, we propose a robust feature learning approach based on deep convolutional neural networks. Given that we aim at providing a solution for a real-world problem, people are allowed to walk around freely in two different rooms. In this setting, the IDentification with Radar data data set is constructed and published, consisting of 150 min of annotated MD data equally spread over five targets. Through experiments, we investigate the effectiveness of both the Doppler and time dimension, showing that our approach achieves a classification error rate of 24.70% on the validation set and 21.54% on the test set for the five targets used. A novel algorithm for 3-D interferometric inverse synthetic aperture radar (InISAR) imaging of ship target with complex motion via orthogonal double baseline is presented. For the ship target with a certain translational velocity and 3-D rotation, the distance between any scatterers on the target and the radar is analyzed in detail, and the keystone transform is used to reduce the impact of migration through resolution cell of ship target with big size. Then, the fractional Fourier transform is adopted to achieve the 2-D ISAR image of the target, and the mismatch of the ISAR images achieved by the three radars is solved by the image coregistration method according to the 1-D range profile. Finally, the 3-D InISAR image of the ship target is achieved with the interferometric operation with the three ISAR images. The effectiveness of the proposed method is proved by some simulation results, and the influence of different motion parameters on the 3-D imaging of ship target is analyzed simultaneously in this paper. In this paper, the motion parameters’ estimation problem in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging is extended to the multidimensional case, and the azimuth signal of a moving target with velocities and accelerations in three directions is modeled as a polynomial-phase signal (PPS). To estimate the multidimensional motion parameters of the moving target from the azimuth PPS, a multi-SAR system is required. On this basis, a new method based on the cubic phase function (CPF) is proposed to estimate the Doppler phase coefficients (DPCs) of the PPS. And, all the first- and second-order motion terms can be derived from the DPC. Classification is an important technique for remote sensing data interpretation. In order to enhance the performance of a supervised classifier and ensure the lowest possible cost of the training samples used in the process, active learning (AL) can be used to optimize the training sample set. At the same time, integrating spatial information can help to enhance the separability between similar classes, which can in turn reduce the need for training samples in AL. To effectively integrate spatial information into the AL framework, this paper proposes a new active relearning (ARL) model for remote sensing image classification. In particular, our model is used to relearn the spatial features on the classification map, which contributes significantly to enhancing the performance of the classifier. We integrate the relearning model into the AL framework, with the aim to accelerate the convergence of AL and further reduce the labeling cost. Under the newly developed ARL framework, we propose two spatial–spectral uncertainty criteria to optimize the procedure for selecting new training samples. Furthermore, an adaptive multiwindow ARL model is also introduced in this paper. Our experiments with two hyperspectral images and two very high resolution images indicate that the ARL model exhibits faster convergence speed with fewer samples than traditional AL methods. Cloud radiative forcing climate signals cannot be detected and proved sufficiently by the existing space-based Earth Radiation Budget (ERB) measurements due to the insufficient instrument calibration accuracy, relative to the sizes of mere decadal-scale trends. This paper, therefore, introduces a new project called the Moon and ERB Experiment (MERBE). Its methodology is for all earth observations using broadband thermal detectors, such as bolometers, to adhere toward more traceable calibration standards based on scans of our moon. This traceability limits instrument-dependent biases and spurious drifts for the past decades of existing earth data measurements as well as future measurements. The goal of the MERBE project is to substantially increase existing satellite climate data accuracy; therefore, a reexamination of all aspects of space-based ERB device calibration was also warranted. This paper concentrates on the improvement of ERB data quality from the level of detector voltages and onward. A component model of bolometer thermal and electronic time response and offset effects is used to design an improved inversion filter, which deconvolves path direction dependence of a scanning thermal detector. For every ERB instrument on the TRMM, Terra, Aqua, and SNPP satellites, instantaneous error reductions are achieved in all recovered MERBE radiance measurements. Detecting moving targets in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery has recently gained a lot of interest as a way to augment optical moving target detection and classification in adverse (e.g., cloudy) weather conditions. In this paper, we primarily focus on the problem of detecting and imaging moving targets in single-channel (or summed multichannel) SAR data. Single-channel-based methods provide the ability to do detection well below the normal minimum detectable velocity (MDV) of multichannel-based GMTI. This can be particularly important for small radar antennas, which tend to have high conventional GMTI MDV. We also show results for multiple channel geolocation after single-channel detection and imaging. The algorithms consist of the following steps. We first suppress the stationary scene by comparing noncoherent time-subimages. We then detect the movers by applying a set of possible motion corrections to the image and use a novel matched filter to detect the movers in this space. We can then image the moving targets using standard SAR focusing techniques and geolocate the movers using multichannel (if available) along-track interferometry. This paper presents an evaluation of the quality of data from the MicroWave Humidity Sounder-2, flown on the FY-3C polar orbiting satellite, and first results of trials assimilating the data in all-sky conditions in the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts’ assimilation system. This instrument combines traditional microwave humidity sounding capabilities at 183 GHz with new channels at 118 GHz, which have never before been available from space. The aim of this paper is twofold: to contribute to the calibration/validation of this satellite by evaluating the data and to test for the first time the impact of assimilating 118-GHz sounding channels in a global numerical weather prediction system. MWHS-2 was first evaluated by comparing observation minus short-range forecast statistics to similar instruments, which indicated that the quality was generally similar. Adding the 118- and 183-GHz channels to the full operational observing system led to small improvements in the short-range (~12 h) forecast accuracy for both sets of channels, and improvements in the 2–4-day wind forecast accuracy for the 183-GHz channels. Short-range forecasts were improved for global humidity in particular when assimilating the 183-GHz channels (0.5% improvement) and for cloud and low-level wind in the Southern Hemisphere extra-tropics when assimilating the 118-GHz channels (by, respectively, 0.5% and 0.2%). In the absence of other atmospheric observations, assimilating the 118-GHz channels improved the global forecast accuracy, but the overall impact was less than for the 183-GHz channels, or for equivalent Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-A channels. Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) is an important technique for tree stem detection. In this paper, a point-based method for stem detection is proposed using single-scan TLS data. One of the main concerns is the point density, which decreases rapidly with the increasing distance to the scanner position. In the proposed method, the search radius is generated adaptively, based on the relationship between the distance and point density, to make sure that the neighborhood maintains a similar scale to the corresponding point density. The belonging of each point is recognized with cuckoo search-based support vector machine, and the points labeled as stem are then clustered and filtered for further verification. The threshold for the small cluster filtering is also adaptive to deal with the problem of the cluster point number decreasing as a function of distance. The stem position is calculated with the lowest cylinder from the cluster segmentation and modeling for the stem mapping. Experiments were carried out on two plots with radii of more than 130 m. The overall detection rate was 76.1%, and 75% of the stems outside 80 m were detected with the adaptive radius, despite the point density being less than 5 cm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we propose two methods to optimize scattering mechanism vectors in polarimetric interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) dealing with high-resolution SAR data. The methods optimize an interferogram by focusing on the pixel-by-pixel variation of the scattering mechanisms. We show the efficacy of the methods using fully polarimetric interferometric radar data obtained from the Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2 PALSAR-2 to generate accurate digital elevation models successfully. Finally, we confirm the importance of considering the polarization in such InSAR systems by comparing parameters optimized in the proposed methods with those calculated from the well-known Pauli coherency matrix. It has been previously demonstrated that it is possible to perform remote vibrometry using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) in conjunction with the discrete fractional Fourier transform (DFrFT). Specifically, the DFrFT estimates the chirp parameters (related to the instantaneous acceleration of a vibrating object) of a slow-time signal associated with the SAR image. However, ground clutter surrounding a vibrating object introduces uncertainties in the estimate of the chirp parameter retrieved via the DFrFT method. To overcome this shortcoming, various techniques based on subspace decomposition of the SAR slow-time signal have been developed. Nonetheless, the effectiveness of these techniques is limited to values of signal-to-clutter ratio ≥5 dB. In this paper, a new vibrometry technique based on displaced-phase-center antenna (DPCA) SAR is proposed. The main characteristic of a DPCA-SAR is that the clutter signal can be canceled, ideally, while retaining information on the instantaneous position and velocity of a target. In this paper, a novel method based on the extended Kalman filter (EKF) is introduced for performing vibrometry using the slow-time signal of a DPCA-SAR. The DPCA-SAR signal model for a vibrating target, the mathematical characterization of the EKF technique, and vibration estimation results for various types of vibration dynamics are presented. Repeat-pass spaceborne differential synthetic aperture radar interferometry (DInSAR) is commonly used to measure surface deformation. However, the phase delay due to the atmospheric water vapor has a significant influence on the accuracy of DInSAR results. On the other hand, the signal delay in DInSAR can give the spatial variation information of water vapor during the two image acquisitions. There are some ripple-like phase signals in DInSAR, which are probably due to the mountain wave in the study area. In this paper, the weather research and forecasting (WRF) model is used to simulate the atmospheric delay and compared to the phase delay derived from DInSAR results to understand the mountain-wave phases in interferograms. The results indicate that the ripple-like phase signal in the DInSAR phase is due to different intensities of the mountain wave in two acquisitions. The WRF model can be used to explain the mechanism of mountain-wave phase in DInSAR, which may then, hopefully, be used for DInSAR atmospheric correction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Inspired by recent development of artificial satellite, remote sensing images have attracted extensive attention. Recently, notable progress has been made in scene classification and target detection. However, it is still not clear how to describe the remote sensing image content with accurate and concise sentences. In this paper, we investigate to describe the remote sensing images with accurate and flexible sentences. First, some annotated instructions are presented to better describe the remote sensing images considering the special characteristics of remote sensing images. Second, in order to exhaustively exploit the contents of remote sensing images, a large-scale aerial image data set is constructed for remote sensing image caption. Finally, a comprehensive review is presented on the proposed data set to fully advance the task of remote sensing caption. Extensive experiments on the proposed data set demonstrate that the content of the remote sensing image can be completely described by generating language descriptions. This paper evaluates the calibration quality during the blackbody (BB) warm-up cool-down cycle for thermal emissive bands onboard Aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). This evaluation utilizes data from Aqua MODIS Collection 6 Level-1B products and VIIRS Sensor Data Records in 6-min granule format provided by the NASA Land Science Investigator-led Processing System. Nearly simultaneous hyperspectral measurements from the Aqua Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) and the S-NPP Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) are used as references for MODIS and VIIRS, respectively. Each AIRS footprint of 13.5 km is co-located with multiple MODIS pixels while each CrIS field of view of 14 km is co-located with multiple VIIRS pixels. The corresponding AIRS-simulated MODIS and CrIS-simulated VIIRS radiances are derived by convolutions based on sensor-dependent relative spectral response functions. In this paper, the analysis mainly focuses on the bands that are used in sea surface temperature products. The results show that there is virtually no impact for MODIS bands 22 and 23 and bands 31 and 32 for a BB temperature below 290 K; however, when the BB temperature increases above 290 K, the impact is up to 0.3 K for bands 22 and 23 and 0.05 K for bands 31 and 32, respectively. For VIIRS, BB temperature-dependent drifts are observed in M15 and M16, which can reach 0.15 and 0.1 K, respectively, over the operational BB temperature range and the VIIRS brightness temperature range. The reconstruction of urban buildings from large-scale airborne laser scanning point clouds is an important research topic in the geoscience field. Large-scale urban scenes usually contain a large number of object categories and many overlapped or closely neighboring objects, which poses great challenges for classifying and modeling buildings from these data sets. In this paper, we propose a deep reinforcement learning framework that integrates a 3-D convolutional neural network, a deep Q-network, and a residual recurrent neural network for the efficient semantic parsing of large-scale 3-D point clouds. The proposed framework provides an end-to-end automatic processing method that maps the raw point cloud to the classification results of the given categories. After obtaining the building classes, we utilize an edge-aware resampling algorithm to consolidate the point set with noise-free normals and clean preservation of sharp features. Finally, 2.5-D dual contouring, which is a data-driven approach, is introduced to generate urban building models from the consolidated point clouds. Due to the very high orbit, the apparent features of geosynchronous synthetic aperture radar (GEOSAR) are the curved trajectory and long integration time, which can lead to severe coupling between the azimuth and the range directions and, therefore, complicates the resolution evaluation. The traditional analytical approach based on the 2-D division may produce large resolution error, and the numerical approach may suffer from huge computation burden. Therefore, an analytical resolution evaluation approach for GEOSAR based on the local feature of the ambiguity function is studied in this paper. The proposed approach is validated with simulation data to be of high efficiency and accuracy. In addition, the proposed approach is also demonstrated to be capable of evaluating the resolution for other complex platforms, and of evaluating the 3-D resolution of a SAR system. Hyperspectral image (HSI) noise reduction is an active research topic in HSI processing due to its significance in improving the performance for object detection and classification. In this paper, we propose a joint spectral and spatial low-rank (LR) regularized method for HSI denoising, based on the assumption that the free-noise component in an observed signal can exist in latent low-dimensional structure while the noise component does not have this property. The proposed HSI denoising method not only considers the traditional LR property across the spectral domain but also leverages nonlocal LR property over the spatial domain. The main contribution of this paper is the incorporation of the low-rankness-based nonlocal similarity into sparse representation to characterize the spatial structure. Specially, the similar patches in each cluster usually contain similar sharp structure such as edges and textures; LR performed on cluster entitles to achieve a lower rank than that on the global spectral correlation. To make the proposed method more tractable and robust, we develop a variable splitting-based technique to solve the optimization problem. Experiment results on both simulated and real hyperspectral data sets demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art methods with significant improvements both visually and quantitatively. Chang'e-3 (CE-3) has been the first spacecraft to soft land on the moon since the Soviet Union's Luna 24 in 1976. The spacecraft arrived at Mare Imbrium on December 14, 2013, and the same day, Yutu lunar rover separated from lander to start its exploration of the surface and the subsurface around the landing site. The rover was equipped, among other instruments, with two lunar penetrating radar systems having a working frequency of 60 and 500 MHz. The radars acquired data for about two weeks while the rover was slowly moving along a path of about 114 m. At navigation point N0209, the rover got stacked into the lunar soil and after that only data at a fixed position could be collected. The low-frequency radar data have been analyzed by different authors and published in two different papers, which reported totally controversial interpretations of the radar cross sections. This paper is devoted to resolve such controversy by carefully analyzing and comparing the data collected on the moon by Yutu rover and on earth by a prototype of LPR mounted onboard a model of the CE-3 lunar rover. Such analysis demonstrates that the deep radar features previously ascribed to the lunar shallow stratigraphy are not real reflectors, rather they are signal artifacts probably generated by the system and its electromagnetic interaction with the metallic rover. This paper investigated the sensitivity of passive microwave L-band soil moisture (SM) retrieval from multiangle airborne brightness temperature data obtained under morning and afternoon conditions from the National Airborne Field Experiment conducted in southeast Australia in 2006. Ground measurements at a dryland focus farm including soil texture, soil temperature, and vegetation water content were used as ancillary data to drive the retrieval model. The derived SM was then in turn evaluated with the ground-measured near-surface SM patterns. The results of this paper show that the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity target accuracy of 0.04 m3·m-3 for single-SM retrievals is achievable irrespective of the 6 A.M. and 6 P.M. overpass acquisition times for moisture conditions≥0.15 m3·m-3. Additional tests on the use of the air temperature as proxy for the vegetation temperature also showed no preference for the acquisition time. The performance of multiparameter retrievals of SM and an additional parameter proved to be satisfactory for SM modeling--independent of the acquisition time--with root-mean-square errors less than 0.06 m3·m-3 for the focus farm. This paper describes an experiment that was carried out in the North Sea off the Sylt island in May 2012 with the aim to study the influence of the maritime boundary layer conditions on the propagation of radar signals under low grazing angle geometry and to establish a sea clutter database at different frequencies with a view to contribute to new sea clutter models. The radar measurements were carried out with the highly versatile radar called MEMPHIS operating in sea configuration at X-, Ka-, and W-band, simultaneously. As concerns the oceanographic and atmospheric characterization, the collection of measurements was done with a sophisticated suite of sensors partly mounted on the research vessel (RV) Elisabeth Mann Borgese (EMB) and onboard different types of buoys, a catamaran, and a tethered balloon. Over a period of four days, a comprehensive and valuable data set was successfully collected including clutter measurements under different geometrical configurations and propagation runs with corner reflectors mounted onboard RV EMB. An insight into the overall approach is given together with many measurement examples for a very detailed oceanographic and meteorological characterization and a vast number of multifrequency radar acquisitions, showing the complexity of different parameters that have to be considered for sensor performance assessment and prediction. Image change detection (CD) is a challenging problem, particularly when images come from different sensors. In this paper, we present a novel and reliable CD model, which is first based on the estimation of a robust similarityfeature map generated from a pair of bitemporal heterogeneous remote sensing images. This similarity-feature map, which is supposed to represent the difference between the multitemporal multisensor images, is herein defined, by specifying a set of linear equality constraints, expressed for each pair of pixels existing in the before-and-after satellite images acquired through different modalities. An estimation of this overconstrained problem, also formulated as a nonlocal pairwise energy-based model, is then carried out, in the least square sense, by a fast linear-complexity algorithm based on a multidimensional scaling mapping technique. Finally, the fusion of different binary segmentation results, obtained from this similarity-feature map by different automatic thresholding algorithms, allows us to precisely and automatically classify the changed and unchanged regions. The proposed method is tested on satellite data sets acquired by real heterogeneous sensor, and the results obtained demonstrate the robustness of the proposed model compared with the best existing state-of-the-art multimodal CD methods recently proposed in the literature. Pansharpening usually refers to the fusion of a high spatial resolution panchromatic (PAN) image with a higher spectral resolution but coarser spatial resolution multispectral (MS) image. Owing to the wide applicability of related products, the literature has been populated by many papers proposing several approaches and studies about this issue. Many solutions require a preliminary spectral matching phase wherein the PAN image is matched with the MS bands. In this paper, we propose and properly justify a new approach for performing this step, demonstrating that it yields state-of-the-art performance. The comparison with existing spectral matching procedures is performed by employing four data sets, concerning different kinds of landscapes, acquired by the Pléiades, WorldView-2, and GeoEye-1 sensors. Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) radio occultation (RO) has been widely used in the prediction of weather, climate, and space weather, particularly in the area of tropospheric analyses. However, one of the issues with GNSS RO measurements is that they are interfered with by the signals reflected from the earth's surface. Many RO events are subject to such interfered GNSS measurements, which are considerably difficult to extract from the GNSS RO measurements. To precisely identify interfered RO events, an improved machine learning approach--a gradient descent artificial neural network (ANN)-aided radio-holography method--is proposed in this paper. Since this method is more complex than most other machine learning methods, for improving its efficiency through the reduction in computational time for near-real-time applications, a scale factor and a regularization factor are also adjusted in the ANN approach. This approach was validated using Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate/FC-3 atmPhs (level 1b) data during the period of day of year 172-202, 2015, and its detection results were compared with the flag data set provided by Radio Occultation Meteorology Satellite Application Facilities for the performance assessment and validation of the new approach. The results were also compared with those of the support vector machine method for improvement assessment. The TanDEM-X mission is the first free flying bistatic SAR mission. It has the primary objective to generate within a short time frame a global digital elevation model (DEM) of 10-m absolute vertical accuracy and 2-m relative height accuracy. For that, the whole land mass has been mapped at least twice with different baselines. The success of the mission depends on the accuracy of the final DEM and therefore on the reliability of the phase unwrapping (PU) algorithm. Hence, a robust and versatile PU method, which is in accordance with the acquisition concept, is necessary. This paper presents a new method that combines bistatic high-resolution interferometric data in order to perform an accurate PU on a huge amount of data. The dual-baseline PU correction (DB-PUC) framework addresses this challenge by correcting errors that occurred during the single-baseline PU procedure. It benefits from the additional information available through the differential interferogram and the stereo-radargrammetric phase, which are used to correct region-wise the ambiguity bands of the misestimated unwrapped phases to be less sensitive to noise and possible temporal changes. The multilevel of the DB-PUC approach makes it flexible, computationally efficient, and well adapted to deal with the various PU error scenarios. In this paper, the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) calibration for low-frequency missions by means of stable point targets is presented. Calibration at low frequency involves the absolute radiometric calibration, the antenna pattern and pointing characterization and validation, and the distortion system parameters' estimation. The use of traditional instrumentation, such as a polarimetric active radar calibrator, a corner reflector, or an active transponder, may be costly and can reduce the time the instrument is used for operational acquisitions. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the potentiality in calibration of point targets for which the radar cross section and the time stability have been characterized. Given a calibration site, once that a set of the stable point targets have been detected by the analysis of an interferometric stack of SAR acquisitions, they may be used as passive calibrators for the validation of radiometry, elevation antenna pattern, and pointing estimation. We show that, although less targets are expected to be found in P- or L- band than in C- or X-band, a sufficient amount (about 250 targets per acquisition) can provide an accuracy in antenna pattern estimation of about 0.04 dB, if the target accuracy is 0.1 dB at 1◝. The concept of information fusion has gained a widespread interest in many fields due to its complementary properties. It makes systems more robust against uncertainty. This paper presents a new approach for the well-logging estimation problem by using a fusion methodology. The natural gammaray tool (NGT) is considered as an important instrument in the well logging. The NGT detects changes in natural radioactivity emerging from the variations in concentrations of micronutrients as uranium (U), thorium (Th), and potassium (K). The main goal of this paper is to have precise estimation of the concentrations of U, Th, and K. Four types of Kalman filters are designed to estimate the elements using the NGT sensor. Then, a fusion of the Kalman filters is utilized into an integrated framework by an ordered weighted averaging (OWA) operator to enhance the quality of the estimations. A real covariance of the output error based on the innovation matrix is utilized to design weighting factors for the OWA operator. The simulation studies indicate not only a reliable performance of the proposed method compared with the individual Kalman filters but also a better response in contrast with previous fusion methodologies. Deep models with multiple layers have demonstrated their potential in learning abstract and invariant features for better representation and classification of remote sensing images. Moreover, metric learning (ML) is usually introduced into the deep models to further increase the discrimination of deep representations. However, the usual deep ML methods treat the training samples in each training batch in the stochastic gradient descent-based learning procedure independently, and thus, they neglect the important contextual (structural) information in the training samples. In this paper, we first introduce deep structural ML (DSML) into the literature of remote sensing scene classification and specifically capture and use the structural information during the training on the remote sensing images. Further analysis demonstrates that DSML usually makes many learned metric parameters similar. This similarity leads to obvious model redundancy and thus decreases the representational ability of the model. To address this problem, this paper proposes a new diversity-promoting DSML (D-DSML) method by regularizing the learning procedure by a diversity-promoting prior over the parameter factors. The proposed D-DSML encourages the parameter factors to be uncorrelated, such that each factor can model unique information, and thus, the model's description ability and classification performance would be significantly improved. Experiments over six real-world remote sensing scene data sets demonstrate that the proposed method obtains much better results than those obtained by the original deep models and has comparable or even better performances when compared with state-of-the-art methods. This paper presents the first experimental demonstration of the virtual bandwidth synthetic aperture radar (VB-SAR) imaging scheme. VB-SAR is a newly developed subsurface imaging technique which, in stark contrast to traditional close proximity ground penetrating radar schemes, promises imaging from remote standoff platforms such as aircraft and satellites. It specifically exploits the differential interferometric SAR (DInSAR) phase history of a radar wave within a drying soil volume to generate high-resolution vertical maps of the scattering through the soil volume. For this study, a stack of C-band vertically polarized DInSAR images of a sandy soil containing a buried target was collected in the laboratory while the soil moisture was varied--first during controlled water addition, and then during subsequent drying. The wetting image set established the moisture-phase relationship for the soil, which was then applied to the drying DInSAR image set using the VB-SAR scheme. This allowed retrieval of high-resolution VB-SAR imagery with a vertical discrimination of 0.04 m from a stack of 1-m vertical resolution DInSAR images. Polarimetric coherence, which has the potential to reveal physical properties of scatterers, is an important source for polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) data investigation. Target structure and orientation relative to the PolSAR illumination direction are key factors affecting the polarimetric coherence degree. The relative orientation between a sensor and a target can be adjusted using the rotating processing along the radar's line of sight. The main idea of this paper is to extend the traditional polarimetric coherence at a given rotation state (θ = 0) to the rotation domain (θ ∈ [-π, π)) along the radar's line of sight for hidden information exploration. A visualization and characterization tool named as a polarimetric coherence pattern for two arbitrary polarization channels is proposed and developed. This interpretation tool is able to view the variation of polarimetric coherence in the rotation domain containing rich orientation diversity information which is seldom considered. A set of characterization features are derived to completely describe a polarimetric coherence pattern thereafter. Experimental studies with unmanned aerial vehicle SAR (UAVSAR) PolSAR data over crop areas have validated that polarimetric coherence patterns vary in terms of polarization combinations and crop types. The proposed characterization features show good potential to differentiate polarimetric responses from different land covers. Furthermore, a classification scheme combining the selected proposed features and the commonly used roll-invariant features is developed for quantitative and application investigation. Comparison studies with both UAVSAR and Airborne SAR (AIRSAR) data clearly demonstrate the superiority of the proposed classification to the conventional classification with only roll-invariant features. The overall classification accuracies for the seven and eleven land covers of UAVSAR and AIRSAR data are, respectively, increased from 90.21% and 93.87% to 95.12% and 94.63% by the proposed classification scheme. Panchromatic (PAN) and multispectral (MS) imagery classification is one of the hottest topics in the field of remote sensing. In recent years, deep learning techniques have been widely applied in many areas of image processing. In this paper, an end-to-end learning framework based on deep multiple instance learning (DMIL) is proposed for MS and PAN images' classification using the joint spectral and spatial information based on feature fusion. There are two instances in the proposed framework: one instance is used to capture the spatial information of PAN and the other is used to describe the spectral information of MS. The features obtained by the two instances are concatenated directly, which can be treated as simple fusion features. To fully fuse the spatial-spectral information for further classification, the simple fusion features are fed into a fusion network with three fully connected layers to learn the high-level fusion features. Classification experiments carried out on four different airborne MS and PAN images indicate that the classifier provides feasible and efficient solution. It demonstrates that DMIL performs better than using a convolutional neural network and a stacked autoencoder network separately. In addition, this paper shows that the DMIL model can learn and fuse spectral and spatial information effectively, and has huge potential for MS and PAN imagery classification. The assessment of satellite image classifications is usually carried out using a test sample assumed as the ground truth, from which a confusion matrix is derived. There are cases where the reference data, even those coming from a ground survey, are affected by errors and do not represent a reliable truth. In the field of geophysical parameter retrieval, the triple collocation (TC) technique is applied for validating remotely sensed products when the source of test data (e.g., ground data) does not represent a reliable reference. TC is able to retrieve the error variances of three systems observing the same target parameter, assuming that their errors are independent. In this paper, we exploit the same idea to test the classification accuracy in cases where the ground truth is not available. We extend the TC approach to the classification problem for a general number of classes, but we solve it numerically for a two-class problem (i.e., collapsed and noncollapsed buildings). The specific case refers to the detection of L'Aquila 2009 earthquake damage from very high-resolution optical data. The image classification, performed by exploiting an object-based analysis, is compared with those from two different ground surveys carried out after the earthquake by different teams and with different purposes. This paper demonstrates the power of the TC approach for assessing the classification accuracy with no reliable ground truth available, and provides an insight into the problem of assessing damage, from satellite and on ground, in a very critical and unsafe situation, like the one occurring after an earthquake. Corner feature matching remains a difficult task for wide-baseline images because of viewpoint distortion, surface discontinuities, and partial occlusions. In this paper, we propose a robust Harris corner matching method based on the quasi-homography transform (QHT) and self-adaptive window. Our method is divided into three steps. First, high-quality Harris corners were extracted from stereo images using optimal detecting, and initial matches were simultaneously acquired by integrating complementary affine-invariant features and the scale-invariant feature transform descriptor. Second, the pair of fundamental matrices was estimated based on the initial matches and improved random sample consensus algorithm. Subsequently, the global QHT was produced by duplicate epipolar geometries. Third, conjugate Harris corners were obtained by combining QHT and normalized cross correlation, and the accuracy of the corresponding points was further improved based on self-adaptive least-squares matching (SALSM). Experiments on six groups of wide-baseline images demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, and a comprehensive comparison with the existing corner matching algorithms indicates that our method has notable superiority in terms of accuracy and distribution. The main contribution of this paper is that the proposed global QHT can reduce the search range effectively for candidates, and the proposed SALSM can notably improve the accuracy of the corresponding corners. In order to solve the accuracy problem caused by lens distortions of nonmetric digital cameras mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle, the estimation for initial values of lens distortion must be studied. Based on the fact that radial lens distortions are the most significant of lens distortions, a simple and efficient method for radial lens distortion estimation is proposed in this paper. Starting from the coplanar equation, the geometric characteristics of the relative orientation equations are explored. This paper further proves that the radial lens distortion can be linearly estimated in a continuous relative orientation model. The proposed procedure only requires a sufficient number of point correspondences between two or more images obtained by the same camera; thus it is suitable for a natural scene where the lack of straight lines and calibration objects precludes most previous techniques. Non-Rayleigh distributed radar clutter is widely reported in studies of radar scattering from sea and land surfaces. Existing models of scattered field amplitude distributions have been developed primarily through empirical fits to the statistics of radar backscatter measurements. In contrast, this paper investigates a physics-based approach to determine the amplitude distributions of fields scattered from rough surfaces using Monte Carlo simulations and analytical methods, for both backscattering and bistatic configurations. The rough surface is represented using a “two-scale” model. An individual surface facet contains “small-scale” roughness, for which scattered fields are evaluated using the second-order small slope approximation. Individual surface facets are tilted by the slopes of the “large-scale” roughness in a given observation. The results show that non-Rayleigh amplitude distributions are obtained when tilting is performed, and that the departure from the Rayleigh distribution becomes more significant as the variance of the tilting slope increases. Further analysis shows that this departure results from variations in the mean scattering amplitude from a facet (the texture) as tilting occurs. The distribution of the texture is studied and compared with existing models. Finally, the distribution of the scattered field amplitude is modeled through the compound Gaussian model, first using the distribution of the texture, and then in terms of the probability density function of tilting slopes (which avoids the requirement of the knowledge of the texture distribution). Hyperspectral imagery (HSI) exploitation typically requires spectral signatures for target detection and identification algorithms. As the longwave infrared (LWIR) region of the electromagnetic spectrum is dominated by thermal emission, spectral radiance measurements are influenced by object temperature, and thus, estimates of target temperature may be necessary for emissivity retrieval to support these algorithms. Therefore, lack of accurate temperature information poses a significant challenge for HSI target detection and identification. Previous studies have demonstrated LWIR hyperspectral unmixing in both radiance and emissivity domains using in-scene target signatures. Here, a radiance-domain LWIR material identification algorithm for subpixel target identification of solid materials is developed by combining spectral radiance and linear mixing models with Bayesian model averaging. Application to experimental LWIR HSI illustrates that the algorithm effectively distinguishes between solid materials with a high degree of spectral similarity and reduces the probability of false alarms by at least one order of magnitude over a standard adaptive coherence estimator detector. Limits of identification are inferred from the imagery and found to depend on material type, target size, and target geometry. For the sensor and materials in this paper, the results imply that targets of nominally 5 m2 in size with strong spectral features can be identified for ground sampling distances (GSDs) on the order of 5-10 m (with abundances as low as ~10%) whereas blackbody-like materials are difficult to distinguish for GSDs larger than approximately 3 m. The ocean surface current is a very important parameter of ocean dynamic environment. It is connected to global climate change, marine environment forecasting, marine navigation, engineering security, and so on. The observation and prediction of ocean surface current have attracted more and more concern. Doppler Scatterometer (DopScat) is a new type of radar for ocean surface wind and current field remote sensing. The ocean surface current inversion method of DopScat impacts the measurement accuracy directly. In this paper, we establish the simulation model of a DopScat and provide the radial velocity error model. The numerical ocean surface Doppler spectrum model is also introduced and validated with the empirical geophysical model function in C-band (CDOP). The suitable ocean wave elevation spectrum and directional distribution function are selected. What is more, this paper establishes the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) method to retrieve the ocean surface current and wind simultaneously. The retrieval accuracy for different positions in cross track, different wind speeds, and different current speeds are analyzed. At last, the global ocean current field is observed by DopScat and the ocean current is retrieved. In our simulation, the orbit parameters and observation geometry of DopScat are the same as that of HY-2A scatterometer. The retrieval results show that global current speed standard deviation can be smaller than 0.18 m/s for five days and 0.5 ^\circ \times 0.5 ^\circ grid average. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

To facilitate the detection of hydraulic fractures by electromagnetic survey, a discontinuous Galerkin frequency-domain (DGFD) method is introduced in this paper to efficiently model the fracture responses under complicated geophysical environments. In the proposed DGFD method, the computational domain can be split into multiple subdomains with nonconformal meshes. The Riemann solver (upwind flux) is introduced to evaluate the numerical flux. The impedance transition boundary condition (ITBC) is employed to facilitate fracture modeling by approximating fractures as surfaces. Numerical results show that the ITBC works well for different fracture conductivities, dipping angles, operation frequencies, as well as different sources. For both small- and large-scale fractures, it also shows good agreement with the references. The responses of fractures increase as their conductivities become larger. Large dipping angles can cause spikes on the responses in a borehole. For a magnetic source, higher operation frequencies can enhance the signal level, while for an electric source, the sensitivity to frequency is small. When no borehole is considered, the responses due to an electric source are in general larger than those due to a magnetic one. However, when a borehole with conductive mud is included, the responses can be reversed for the electric and magnetic sources. For multiple fractures outside a cased borehole, the signal level of an electric source is significantly reduced, while that of a magnetic source remains at a similar level compared with the scenario without a casing. This paper analyzes the large positive bias of sea surface temperature (SST) retrievals of selected remotely sensed algorithms recorded during the simultaneous occurrence of upwelling and atmospheric subsidence along the coastal waters of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The optimal estimator (OE) for retrieving SST and the multichannel (MCSST) and nonlinear (NLSST) estimators are compared using Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer-3 data. The in situ SST (SSTbuoy) data set used to validate the remotely sensed SST retrievals was collected from five moored buoys (four in the open sea and one in coastal waters). The principal results of this paper are as follows. First, the sensitivity analyses show that OE is quite susceptible to the first-guess SST rather than to the humidity profiles. Second, the comparison between the SSTOE and 365 cloud-free SSTbuoy measurements in open sea waters presents an root mean squared error (RMSE), bias, and standard deviation (STD) with the intervals of [0.5, 0.6], [−0.51, 0.13], and [0.27, 0.48], respectively. Third, the MCSST, NLSST, and OE SST produce a positive bias that can reach 5 K during simultaneous upwelling and atmospheric subsidence in coastal waters. Such unexpected errors are due to low SST values and water vapor compression in the lower layer of the atmosphere related to a temperature inversion. Fourth, an alternative approach using SSTbuoy obtained on the previous day as a first guess instead of the climatological SST significantly improves the errors (SSTOE–SSTbuoy) by reducing RMSE, bias, and STD by 58% (from 3.30 to 1.39 K), 73% (from 3.00 to 0.80 K), and 19% (from 1.38 to 1.12 K), respectively. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) is a whisk broom scanning radiometer, which is onboard the Terra and Aqua spacecraft. Both MODIS instruments have successfully completed more than 12 years of on-orbit flight. The long-wave infrared (LWIR) photovoltaic bands (bands 27–30, 6.72–9.73 μm) on the LWIR focal plane assembly in Terra MODIS have contamination due to electronic crosstalk. In this paper, we examine Terra MODIS band 28 (7.33 μm) crosstalk effects, their impact, and mitigation. The crosstalk signal is identified and characterized using the regular lunar observations acquired by MODIS. It is evident from the derived crosstalk coefficients that the contamination was mainly from bands 27 (6.72 μm), 29 (8.55 μm), and 30 (9.73 μm). The crosstalk coefficients are generally a small positive quantity in the early to middle part of the mission with a few exceptions, and then changing directions. A linear correction algorithm is applied to both L1B calibration and retrieval to qualitatively and quantitatively assess the impact and improvements in this paper. Attention has been devoted to multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems in recent years. The applications of MIMO SAR systems, which involve high-resolution wide-swath remote sensing, 3-D imaging, and multibaseline interferometry, are seriously limited by the available sets of orthogonal waveforms. Although orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) chirp waveforms are proposed to avoid intrapulse interferences, this waveform scheme has not been investigated for practical implementation. In this paper, challenges in implementing the OFDM chirp waveforms on practical systems are analyzed and solved. First, the small extra carrier frequency between the mutually orthogonal waveforms, which renders the OFDM chirp waveforms not strictly on common spectral support, is avoided by improving the modulation of the OFDM chirp waveform. Second, the tedious demodulation, which is realized by circular-shift addition in the time domain and subcarrier extraction in the frequency domain, is improved. Third, the radar systematic error and the Doppler shift, which introduce bandwidth leakage and degrade the waveform orthogonality significantly, are compensated. Finally, taking all these challenges into consideration, a novel signal processing algorithm along with a MIMO SAR system model is proposed. The validation of in-orbit instrument performance requires both stability in calibration source and also calibration corrections to compensate for instrument changes. Unlike internal calibrations, the Moon offers an external source whose signal variance is predictable and nondegrading. This paper describes a method of validation using lunar observations scanning near full moon by the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) Flight Model (FM)-1 and FM-2 aboard the Terra satellite, FM-3 and FM-4 aboard the Aqua satellite, and, as of 2012, FM-5 aboard Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership. Given the stability of the source, adjustments within the data set are based entirely on removing orbital effects. Lunar observations were found to require a consistent data set spanning at least two to three years in length to examine instrument stability due to the final step when lunar libration effects are addressed. Atmospheric refraction in the troposphere causes the propagation speed of electromagnetic signals to be less than the light speed. This creates a difference between the actual propagation path delay and the distance of the geometrical straight-line path, i.e., a quantity known as the tropospheric delay. As classical imaging algorithms for spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) do not take the tropospheric delay into account, imaging filters are designed based on the assumption of rectilinear propagation with the light speed. Therefore, a residual phase exists in imaging results, which affects focusing quality under the condition of high resolution. In order to compensate for the impact of tropospheric delay on focusing performance, this paper modifies the spaceborne SAR echo model and then proposes an imaging compensation algorithm. The key to this algorithm is to fit a range delay coefficient based on the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service model of zenith delay and Niell mapping function, which projects the zenith delay onto the looking direction. Noise contamination is a ubiquitous problem in hyperspectral images (HSIs), which is a challenging and promising theme in many remote sensing applications. A large number of methods have been proposed to remove noise. Unfortunately, most denoising methods fail to take full advantages of the high spectral correlation and to simultaneously consider the specific noise distributions in HSIs. Recently, a spectral–spatial adaptive hyperspectral total variation (SSAHTV) was proposed and obtained promising results. However, the SSAHTV model is insensitive to the image details, which makes the edges blur. To overcome all of these drawbacks, a spectral–spatial kernel method for HSI denoising is proposed in this paper. The proposed method is inspired by the observation that the spectral–spatial information is highly redundant in HSIs, which is sufficient to estimate the clear images. In this paper, a spectral–spatial kernel regularization is proposed to maintain the spectral correlations in spectral dimension and to match the original structure between two spatial dimensions. Moreover, an adaptive mechanism is developed to balance the fidelity term according to different noise distributions in each band. Therefore, it cannot only suppress noise in the high-noise band but also preserve information in the low-noise band. A physical approach to synthesize fractal surfaces for a reliable and controllable use within remote-sensing applications is presented in this paper. In particular, the physical criteria to determine the minimum number of tones of the Weierstrass–Mandelbrot (WM) function needed to adequately synthesize realizations of fractional Brownian motion (fBm) processes are analytically derived. The presented rationale relies on considering, in an appropriate range of scales, the WM function as a spectral sampling of the fBm process, and linking the number of sampling functions to the width of the scale range and to the sampling rate; hence, it is shown how to set the lower and the upper scales according to a given remote-sensing problem. In this paper, the condition for determining the WM wavenumber sampling rate is analytically derived.
