In the control of variable flux reluctance machine (VFRM) excited by zero-sequence current, neglecting the zero-sequence resistive voltage drop would cause a large calculation deviation of the stator voltage, which can saturate the inverter and influence the switching from constant torque region to flux-weakening region. To solve with this problem, a flux-weakening control method considering the zero-sequence resistive voltage drop for VFRM is proposed. Firstly, the relationship between dq-axis voltages, zero-sequence voltage and the maximum voltage is presented. Secondly, based on the deduced voltage constraint, the calculation of optimal reference currents in flux-weakening region is presented by using Lagrange multiplier method. Since the zero-sequence voltage is considered, the calculation accuracy of the stator voltage and the utilization rate of DC link voltage are improved, which improves the output power capability. High-frequency oscillations caused by voltage source converters (VSCs) in current control timescale (less than 20 ms) have brought great challenges to the security and stable operation of the VSC-dominated power systems. However, relevant studies on this multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system still lack enough mechanism cognitions of its voltage amplitude/phase dynamics. Thus, this paper will propose a single-input single-output (SISO) equivalent method of this MIMO system to separately study its amplitude/phase dynamics. First, a linearized VSC model based on internal voltage motion equation in current control timescale is derived. This model can explicitly depict VSC's self-characteristic, which is suitable for multi-VSC voltage amplitude/phase dynamic analyses. Then, with reserving and converting the interactions of other outputs into one output, the MIMO system based on this VSC model can be equivalent into the amplitude motion and the phase motion, respectively. These two SISO systems are extremely convenient for engineers to study the mechanisms of the voltage amplitude/phase dynamics. Besides, this SISO equivalent method of the MIMO system can also be used to quantitatively analyze the interactions among the multi-VSC. This paper proposes a novel mesh-based equivalent magnetic network (EMN) model for performance analysis and optimal design of permanent magnet (PM) machines. The key contribution of the EMN model is that a generalized air-gap model solution is proposed by considering the machine motion of PM machines. Meanwhile, a modular modeling method is presented, and then the optimal design of PM machines can be investigated without repetitive programming and modeling. Two kinds of mesh elements are comprehensively utilized in the EMN model, and a hybrid rotor PM (HRPM) machine with interior PM and surface PM configuration is selected as an example to illustrate the development processes of EMN model. Meanwhile, the electromagnetic characteristics of HRPM machine are calculated by the proposed EMN model, such as back electromotive force, air-gap flux density distribution, and average torque. In this paper, by solving the Maxwell's equations, an analytical model is developed for the prediction of the air gap flux density in the eccentric permanent magnet (PM)-inset machines at no-load and on-load conditions. Since in this model neither Schwartz–Christoffel transformation nor perturbation analysis is used, it is fast and accurate. In the modeling process, the stator of the eccentric machine is replaced with an equivalent surface current (ESC), which is injected at the stator bore. Distribution of the ESC is unknown and must be selected, such that the resultant tangential field satisfies the boundary condition at the stator bore contour. To apply this condition, the flux density of the PMs, armature current, and the ESC are obtained by applying the subdomain analysis and using a conformal transformation. The armature current and ESC are considered as a surface current sheet at the stator bore. The back electromotive force and inductances of the eccentric machine are obtained in the proposed model. In addition, using the Maxwell stress tensor, the unbalanced magnetic force, and the electromagnetic torque are computed. Finally, the model is verified by means of finite element analysis. Modern grid codes require wind turbines (WTs), e.g., type-4 WTs, to have low voltage ride-through (LVRT) capability, and recently, great attention has been attracted on the stability issues of WTs during the period of the LVRT. In this paper, we investigate the influences of the LVRT control on the stability of type-4 WTs under severe voltage sags in very weak grids. First, by proposing a novel quasi-static modeling method, we explore the existence of the WT's equilibrium during the LVRT. It is shown that the WT can lose the equilibrium under certain circumstances, leading to instability of the whole WT system. Furthermore, we use the small-signal analysis to illustrate that even there exists an equilibrium, the WT can become linearly unstable due to the dynamics of the current references generated by the LVRT control. Permanent magnet (PM) synchronous machines (PMSMs) with concentrated windings (CW) exhibit high content of space harmonics leading to non–sinusoidal distribution of PM flux linkage and phase inductances in addition to the non-sinusoidal wave shape of the induced electromotive force. The ideal single reference frame-based PMSM model considers these parameters to be sinusoidal and does not include the effect of harmonics. Hence, computation of electromagnetic torque using ideal model can lead to deviation from the actual waveform. In this paper, a novel analytical model for electromagnetic torque has been derived using multiple reference frames (MRF) incorporating non-sinusoidal aspects of CW PMSM. Initially, the PM flux linkage and inductances in abc frame are extended by incorporating higher order harmonics. Then, the extended model is transformed into dq–axis using MRF rotating at speeds of dominant harmonics in PM flux linkages and inductances, the fundamental being the electrical rotor frequency. Based on this MRF model, a comprehensive electromagnetic torque model for the CW PMSM is derived. Dual stator-winding induction generator (DWIG) is one kind of emerging multiport electrical machine. It has become a promising direction in the last two decades, especially for stand-alone power systems and renewable energy power systems. This paper mainly focuses on the DWIG with similar-poles stator windings and cage-type rotor. An overview of DWIG and its system is given. Recent advances of this generator in system topologies, mathematical model, optimal design, control strategies, and performance analysis are presented. Large torque and voltage ripple are inherent drawbacks of doubly salient generators. This paper first introduces torque sharing function (TSF) into the application of a dual-channel three-phase 12/8 poles doubly salient permanent magnet generator (DSPMG) to reduce torque and voltage ripple. Based on the principle of copper losses minimization, a new TSF is proposed through theoretical analysis and numerical computation. The proposed TSF is compared to conventional TSFs according to three evaluation criteria. In order to achieve satisfying and consistent steady state and dynamic performances over the whole operation range, gain scheduling PI controller is adopted to overcome the highly nonlinear characteristic of the DSPMG. Besides, with compensators of back-EMF, cogging torque and losses adopted as feed-forward, a dual closed-loop generation control system is detailed designed. Overheating is a negative effect that induction motors suffer under either mechanical or electrical anomalous conditions, which can decrement the motors' useful life or produce catastrophic damage. In this sense, a new approach for assisting in the analysis and solution of problems related to overheating in induction motors is the correlation of thermal effects between the abovementioned conditions. In this study, a methodology for the experimental extraction of mathematical models that correlate the thermal effect on the induction motor stator due to voltage unbalance and mechanical overload is developed. In general, the proposed methodology is based on thermal gradients at different points of an induction motor stator. These thermal gradients are generated from either voltage unbalance or mechanical overload. For voltage unbalance estimation, the definitions of IEEE standard 141, IEEE standard 1159, and NEMA norm are considered. The correlation models are carried out and validated experimentally on a three-phase induction motor of 746 W (1 hp). A parameter estimation method for deep-bar induction machines is presented. The parameters are estimated using two instantaneous voltage and current waveforms during a direct startup. The instantaneous input impedance is used as a stator indicator to solve a constrained nonlinear optimization problem that outputs the model's parameters. For such purposes, a novel analytical expression for the instantaneous input impedance is introduced. The method is validated in two distinct National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) design type induction machines (designs A and B), and the accuracy of the obtained parameters is determined by comparing the instantaneous input impedance magnitude and angle errors between the deep-bar and single-cage models with experimental data. The two tested motors showed an improvement when implementing the deep-bar model with the estimated parameters. The error decrease is more significant for the NEMA design B motor which corresponds to a deep-bar rotor construction. Finally, the single-cage and deep-bar models are simulated and their outputs are compared to experimental waveforms. The deep-bar model with the estimated parameters outperforms the single-cage model, showing excellent agreement between the experimental and simulated mechanical speed, stator currents, and electromagnetic torque. Six-phase electrical machines have received significant attention in the literature due to their use in special purpose applications (e.g., aircraft, naval, and vehicular systems). Recently, such machines have also been considered for renewable energy systems including wind generators. Modeling of such machines in commonly available transient simulation programs is not straightforward, especially when the machine model is interfaced with external inductive network and/or power electronic converters. The available modeling approaches include the classical qd 0 model, the coupled-circuit-phase-domain and the voltage-behind-reactance (VBR) models (each having its interfacing challenges). This paper extends the prior research in this area and proposes a constant-parameter VBR model that has a very convenient constant RL−branch interfacing circuit (even for salient pole machines), which makes it simple to implement in most state-variable-based simulations programs. In this paper, a high-performance torque control scheme of an interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) is introduced, which focuses on both steady state and transient torque dynamics of the IPMSM under the maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) condition. For the proposed control scheme with model-based torque correction, an accurate and efficient torque control with robust torque response can be achieved for the MPTA operation. Global stability and performance of the proposed torque control scheme are theoretically guaranteed. The current limitation of the IPMSM is easily handled without anti-windup and without degrading the torque dynamics or stability even the torque demand is beyond the maximum reachable torque. Implementation issues of the proposed control scheme to the real IPMSM plant with parameter variation are discussed. With the compensation of the linear and nonlinear inverter voltage drop, a robust and accurate torque response for the real-time MTPA operation can be achieved by an adaptive current control and online parameter estimation. This paper presents and experimentally validates a new control scheme for electrical drive systems, named cascaded predictive speed and current control. This new strategy uses the model predictive control (MPC) concept. It has a cascaded structure like that found in field-oriented control or direct torque control. Therefore the control strategy has two loops, external and internal, both implemented with model predictive control. The external loop controls the speed, while the inner loop controls the stator currents. The inner control loop is based on Finite Control Set Model Predictive Control, and the external loop uses MPC deadbeat, making full use of the inner loop's highly dynamic response. Experimental results show that the proposed strategy has a performance that is comparable to the classical control strategies but that it is overshoot-free and provides a better time response. The flying-capacitor-based multilevel converter is one of the well-known breeds of the multilevel power converters. This paper proposes a new flying-capacitor-based multilevel converter to minimize the number of flying capacitors (FCs) and power switches. The advantage of the proposed FC-based multilevel converter in comparison with the conventional flying-capacitor multicell converter is that it needs fewer FCs. Also, in comparison with the stacked multicell converter, the proposed multilevel converter requires fewer semiconductor switches. In order to balance the voltage of the FCs in proposed multilevel converter, a new active voltage balancing method which is fully implemented using logic-form equations is presented. The proposed voltage balancing method measures output current and FC voltages to generate switching states to produce the required output voltage level, as well as balance the FCs voltages at their reference values. The output voltage of the proposed multilevel converter controlled with suggested active voltage balancing method can be modulated with any pulse-width-modulation (PWM) method, such as phase-shifted-carrier PWM or level-shifted-carrier PWM. Simulation results and experimental measurements of proposed FC-based multilevel converter are presented to verify the performance of the proposed converter, and its novel switching and modulation strategy, which is based on the active voltage balancing method. In this paper, the study of the torque and power versus speed characteristics for a family of five-phase surface-mounted permanent magnet machine is carried out. With considering hypotheses [linear magnetic modeling, only first and third harmonic terms in the back electromotive force (EMF) and current spectrums], an optimization problem that aims to maximize the torque for given maximum peak voltage and root mean square (RMS) current is formulated: the optimal torque sharing among the two virtual machines (the two dq-axis subspaces) that represent the real five-phase machine is thus calculated for any mechanical speed. For an inverter and a dc voltage sized with only considering the first harmonic of back EMF and current, the problem is solved with changing the virtual machine back EMFs and inductances ratios. With the introduction of the maximum torque/speed point, maximum power/speed point, and maximum reachable speed, it can be shown that, if the inductance ratio is large enough for given Volt–Ampere rating, the machine can produce higher torque without reducing its speed range, thus meaning that the capability of the inverter to work is improved with the use of the third harmonic. The complexity and strong nonlinearity of the model of a self-excited induction generator hinder the systematic design of a voltage regulation system. Using a special reference frame aligned with the stator voltage vector, the paper succeeds in developing a control-oriented linearized model that relates small deviations of the capacitance, load admittance, and angular velocity, to corresponding deviations of the voltage amplitude. Transfer functions are also computed based on the linear model. A stability analysis predicts rapidly decaying oscillatory transients combined with a primary component with slower exponential decay. This paper proposes a new simplified model of a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) that is integrated with a rotor-side converter for studies of large-scale transient stability. This model accurately considers the rotor field dynamics of an induction generator to yield simulation results that are more accurate in terms of voltage stability, as well as angle stability. The purpose of this paper is to provide a simple but effective DFIG model for the study of large-scale transient stability, and to examine the important aspects of rotor voltage and rotor slip power. This new simplified DFIG model with an electric/turbine control system was tested against a six-machine and 23-bus system, and the responses obtained in case studies of transient stability were compared with those of a PSS/E program. In this paper, new expressions are introduced for the determination of the maximum power point (MPP) of photovoltaic (PV) systems as explicit functions of the five parameters of the single-diode model employing the Lambert W function. These equations provide the voltage and current at MPP in a direct and straightforward manner, thus dispensing with any need for iterative solution. They are initially derived for a PV system operating under uniform conditions, and subsequently extended for mismatched conditions at the PV string level. The novelty of these formulae lies in their solid theoretical foundation, which supports their validity in the general case and offers a well-founded symbolic formulation for the MPP evaluation problem. A new method of hierarchically partitioning the numerical calculations associated with the finite-element analysis of rotating electrical machinery is set forth. In this method, the device is partitioned geometrically and hierarchically into its constituent subsystems. Each Newton–Raphson iteration in a magnetically nonlinear device involves the hierarchical solution of relatively compact linear algebraic equations. This is contrasted with conventional approaches involving the formation or updating and solution of a single but large-dimensional sparse equation. In addition to an improvement in the computational efficiency, this approach facilitates efficient management of rotation. The proposed approach is demonstrated to require less than one-fourth the computation time, while producing identical results to those of a conventional formulation when solving for cogging torque and back electromotive force (back-EMF) of a permanent-magnet synchronous machine. We formulate the control of reactive power generation by photovoltaic inverters in a power distribution circuit as a constrained optimization that aims to minimize power losses subject to finite inverter capacity and upper and lower voltage limits at all nodes in the circuit. When voltage variations along the circuit are small and losses of both real and reactive powers are small compared with the respective flows, the resulting optimization problem is convex. Moreover, the cost function is separable enabling a distributed online implementation with node-local computations using only local measurements augmented with limited information from the neighboring nodes communicated over cyber channels. Such an approach lies between the fully centralized and local policy approaches previously considered. We explore protocols based on the dual-ascent method and on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMMs), and find that the ADMM protocol performs significantly better. Power system operates close to its operational limit to achieve a higher level of utilization of the grid infrastructure. As a result, its transient behavior is of great importance to prevent violation of the operation limits. This paper proposes an internal model control (IMC)-based approach for voltage-sourced converters (VSC) to improve their dynamic behavior. This IMC controller is designed based on a detailed model of the VSC. The proposed control approach has superior performance, i.e., faster step response and less overshoot, and higher axes decoupling than the conventional dq-current control method. The proposed IMC-based controller has a straightforward design procedure, and can be implemented using simple PI and PID controllers. Several case studies are presented to evaluate and compare the transient performance of the IMC-based controller with conventional dq current control subsequent to step changes in the set points of direct and quadrature axes current, single-phase fault, and three-phase fault. The aim of this study is to describe a synchronous generator emulator prototype based on a three-phase power electronics converter. The physical structure of the emulator and its relation with the generator mathematical model is described. A voltage-behind-reactance model is used to reproduce the behavior of the generator.
