We consider precoder design for maximizing the weighted sum rate (WSR) of successive zero-forcing dirty paper coding (SZF-DPC). For this problem, the existing precoder designs often assume a sum power constraint (SPC) and rely on the singular value decomposition (SVD). The SVD-based designs are known to be optimal but require high complexity. We first propose a low-complexity optimal precoder design for SZF-DPC under SPC, using the QR decomposition. Then, we propose an efficient numerical algorithm to find the optimal precoders subject to per-antenna power constraints (PAPCs). To this end, the precoder design for PAPCs is formulated as an optimization problem with a rank constraint on the covariance matrices. A well-known approach to solve this problem is to relax the rank constraints and solve the relaxed problem. Interestingly, for SZF-DPC, we are able to prove that the rank relaxation is tight. Consequently, the optimal precoder design for PAPCs is computed by solving the relaxed problem, for which we propose a customized interior-point method that exhibits a superlinear convergence rate. Two suboptimal precoder designs are also presented and compared to the optimal ones. Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) is intended to supplant legacy (optical) bar code scanning technology found in many logistic and retail applications. RFID is distinguished by inexpensive, low power and compact form factor tags, whose longevity and efficacy are predicated on using passive communication techniques and on-tag power harvesting. Such tags employ backscatter modulation, which does not require any active RF components. As a result, backscatter has become an attractive design choice for short-range communications in power constrained wireless sensor networking scenarios. The purpose of this work is two-fold. First, it aims to expose backscatter communication as an emerging topic to a communication systems-theoretic audience. Since backscatter modulation and on-tag power harvesting efficiency are coupled, it is necessary to re-examine notions of power and spectral efficiency from an energy-constraint perspective; this leads to novel coded modulation schemes for future RFID systems. Further, we investigate RFID MIMO systems where the channel fading encountered has different statistics than the classical Rayleigh fading model. This paper studies transmission strategies for the downlink of a cloud radio access network, in which the base stations are connected to a centralized cloud computing-based processor with digital fronthaul or backhaul links. We provide a system-level performance comparison of two fundamentally different strategies, namely, the data-sharing strategy and the compression strategy, which differ in the way the fronthaul/backhaul is utilized. It is observed that the performance of both strategies depends crucially on the available fronthaul or backhaul capacity. When the fronthaul/backhaul capacity is low, the data-sharing strategy performs better, while under moderate-to-high fronthaul/backhaul capacity, the compression strategy is superior. Using insights from such a comparison, we propose a novel hybrid strategy, combining the data-sharing and compression strategies, which allows for better control over the fronthaul/backhaul capacity utilization. This paper provides an analytical performance characterization of both the uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) user-centric network multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, where a cooperating base station (BS) cluster is formed for each user individually and the clusters for different users may overlap. In this model, cooperating BSs (each equipped with multiple antennas) jointly perform zero-forcing beamforming to the set of single-antenna users associated with them. As compared with a baseline network MIMO system with disjoint BS clusters, the effect of user-centric clustering is that it improves signal strength in both the UL and DL, while reducing cluster-edge interference in the DL. This paper quantifies these effects by assuming that BSs and users form Poisson point processes and by further approximating both the signal and interference powers using Gamma distributions of appropriate parameters. We show that BS cooperation provides significant gain as compared to single-cell processing for both the UL and DL, but the advantage of user-centric clustering over the baseline disjoint clustering system is significant for the DL cluster-edge users only. Although the analytic results are derived with the assumption of perfect channel state information and infinite backhaul between the cooperating BSs, they nevertheless provide architectural insight into the design of the future cooperative cellular networks. The universal filtered multicarrier (UFMC) modulation is among the most considered solutions for the realization of beyond orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) air interfaces for future wireless networks. This paper focuses on the design and analysis of a UFMC transceiver equipped with multiple antennas and operating at millimeter-wave carrier frequencies. This paper provides the full mathematical model of an MIMO-UFMC transceiver, taking into account the presence of hybrid analog/digital beamformers at both ends of the communication links. Then, several detection structures are proposed, both for the case of single-packet isolated transmission and for the case of multiple-packet continuous transmission. In the latter situation, this paper also considers the case in which no guard time among adjacent packets is inserted, trading off an increased level of interference with higher values of spectral efficiency. At the analysis stage, several considered detection structures and transmission schemes are compared in terms of bit-error rate, root-mean-square error, and system throughput. The numerical results show that the proposed transceiver algorithms are effective and that the linear minimum mean-square error (MMSE) data detector is capable of well managing the increased interference brought by the removal of guard times among consecutive packets, thus yielding throughput gains of about 10%–13%. The effect of phase noise at the receiver is also numerically assessed, and it is shown that the recursive implementation of the linear MMSE exhibits some degree of robustness against this disturbance. This paper studies the subcarrier allocation and precoder design problem for downlink multiple-input-multiple-output-orthogonal frequency-division multiple access systems. The criterion is to maximize the energy efficiency (EE) of the system. We adopt the time-sharing concept to allocate each subcarrier to one user, which results in a criterion similar with that of rate maximization. However, this approach does not make it possible to solve the problem for any value of the transmit power. We found that there exist gaps along the direction of total transmit power when the user selection switches for each subcarrier, which leads to a discontinuous EE function, for which quasi-concavity has to be checked. We first show that the sufficient conditions obtained for the subcarrier allocation approach are the optimal ones among all possibilities with the same transmit power. Then, we show that the proposed subcarrier allocation results in a discontinuous and quasi-concave EE function. We also give an upper bound of the EE function when the proposed sufficient conditions are not met. This paper investigates the hybrid precoding design for millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems with finite-alphabet inputs. The mmWave MIMO system employs partially-connected hybrid precoding architecture with dynamic subarrays, where each radio frequency (RF) chain is connected to a dynamic subset of antennas. We consider the design of analog and digital precoders utilizing statistical and/or mixed channel state information (CSI), which involve solving an extremely difficult problem in theory: First, designing the optimal partition of antennas over RF chains is a combinatorial optimization problem, whose optimal solution requires an exhaustive search over all antenna partitioning solutions; Second, the average mutual information under mmWave MIMO channels lacks closed-form expression and involves prohibitive computational burden; and Third, the hybrid precoding problem with given partition of antennas is nonconvex with respect to the analog and digital precoders. To address these issues, this paper first presents a simple criterion and the corresponding low complexity algorithm to design the optimal partition of antennas using statistical CSI. Then, it derives the lower bound and its approximation for the average mutual information, in which the computational complexity is greatly reduced compared to calculating the average mutual information directly. In addition, it also shows that the lower bound with a constant shift offers a very accurate approximation to the average mutual information. This paper further proposes utilizing the lower bound approximation as a low-complexity and accurate alternative for developing a manifold-based gradient ascent algorithm to find near-optimal analog and digital precoders. This paper investigates the optimal signal detection problem with a particular interest in large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The problem is NP-hard and can be solved optimally by searching the shortest path on the decision tree. Unfortunately, the existing optimal search algorithms often involve prohibitively high complexities, which indicates that they are infeasible in large-scale MIMO systems. To address this issue, we propose a general heuristic search algorithm, namely, hyper-accelerated tree search (HATS) algorithm. The proposed algorithm employs a deep neural network (DNN) to estimate the optimal heuristic, and then use the estimated heuristic to speed up the underlying memory-bounded search algorithm. This idea is inspired by the fact that the underlying heuristic search algorithm reaches the optimal efficiency with the optimal heuristic function. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm reaches almost the optimal bit error rate (BER) performance in large-scale systems, while the memory size can be bounded. In the meanwhile, it visits nearly the fewest tree nodes. This indicates that the proposed algorithm reaches almost the optimal efficiency in practical scenarios, and thereby it is applicable for large-scale systems. Optimal data detection of data transmitted over a linear channel can always be implemented through the Viterbi algorithm (VA). However, in many cases of interest the memory of the channel prohibits direct application of the VA. A popular and conceptually simple method in this case, studied since the early 1970s, is to first filter the received signal in order to shorten the memory of the channel, and then to apply a VA that operates with the shorter memory. We shall refer to this general concept as a channel shortening (CS) receiver. Although studied for almost four decades, an information theoretic understanding of what such a simple receiver solution is actually doing is not available. In this paper, we show that an optimized CS receiver has a direct correspondance to the chain rule of mutual information. Furthermore, we show that the tools for analyzing the ensuing achievable rates from an optimized CS receiver are precisely the same as those used for analyzing the achievable rates of a minimum mean-square-error (MMSE) receiver. Cell-free massive MIMO is one of the key technologies for future wireless communications, in which users are simultaneously and jointly served by all access points (APs). In this paper, we investigate the minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimation of effective channel coefficients in cell-free massive MIMO systems with massive connectivity. To facilitate the theoretical analysis, only single measurement vector (SMV) based MMSE estimation is considered in this paper, i.e., the MMSE estimation is performed based on the received pilot signals at each AP separately. Inspired by the decoupling principle of replica symmetric postulated MMSE estimation of sparse signal vectors with independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) non-zero components, we develop the corresponding decoupling principle for the SMV based MMSE estimation of sparse signal vectors with independent and non-identically distributed (i.n.i.d.) non-zero components, which plays a key role in the theoretical analysis of SMV based MMSE estimation of the effective channel coefficients in cell-free massive MIMO systems with massive connectivity. Subsequently, based on the obtained decoupling principle of MMSE estimation, likelihood ratio test and the optimal fusion rule, we perform user activity detection based on the received pilot signals at only one AP, or cooperation among the entire set of APs for centralized or distributed detection. Via theoretical analysis, we show that the error probabilities of both centralized and distributed detection tend to zero when the number of APs tends to infinity while the asymptotic ratio between the number of users and pilots is kept constant. We also investigate the asymptotic behavior of oracle estimation in cell-free massive MIMO systems with massive connectivity via random matrix theory. Moreover, in order to demonstrate the potential performance loss of SMV based MMSE estimation, which does not employ the correlation between the received pilot signals at different APs, the multiple measurement vector (MMV) based MMSE estimation, i.e., joint MMSE estimation with pilot signals from all APs, is analyzed via numerical results. Numerical analysis shows that the theoretical analyze with our decoupling principle for the SMV based MMSE estimation of sparse signal vectors with i.n.i.d. non-zero components matches well with the numerical results. Molecular communication via diffusion (MCvD) is a molecular communication method that utilizes the free diffusion of carrier molecules to transfer information at the nanoscale. Due to the random propagation of carrier molecules, intersymbol interference (ISI) is a major issue in an MCvD system. Alongside ISI, interlink interference (ILI) is also an issue that increases the total interference for the MCvD-based multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) approaches. Inspired by the antenna index modulation (IM) concept in traditional communication systems, this paper introduces novel IM-based transmission schemes for MCvD systems. In this paper, molecular space shift keying (MSSK) is proposed as a novel modulation for molecular MIMO systems, and it is found that this method combats ISI and ILI considerably better than the existing MIMO approaches. For nanomachines that have access to two different molecules, the direct extension of MSSK, quadrature MSSK (QMSSK) is also proposed. QMSSK is found to combat ISI considerably well while not performing well against ILI-caused errors. In order to combat ILI more effectively, another dual-molecule-based novel modulation scheme called the molecular spatial modulation (MSM) is proposed. In this paper, we consider device-to-device (D2D) communication that is underlaid in a multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system and proposes a new framework for power control and pilot allocation. In this scheme, the cellular users (CUs) in each cell get orthogonal pilots which are reused with reuse factor one across cells, while all the D2D pairs share another set of orthogonal pilots. We derive a closed-form capacity lower bound for the CUs with different receive processing schemes. In addition, we derive a capacity lower bound for the D2D receivers and a closed-form approximation of it. We provide power control algorithms to maximize the minimum spectral efficiency (SE) and to maximize the product of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios in the network. Different from prior works, in our proposed power control schemes, we consider joint pilot and data transmission optimization. Finally, we provide a numerical evaluation, where we compare our proposed power control schemes with the maximum transmit power case and the case of conventional multi-cell massive MIMO without D2D communication. In this paper, we consider a simple coding scheme for spatial modulation, where the same set of active transmit antennas is repeatedly used over consecutive multiple transmissions. Based on a Gaussian approximation, an approximate maximum likelihood (ML) detection problem is formulated to detect the indices of active transmit antennas. We show that the solution to the approximate ML detection problem can achieve a full coding gain. Furthermore, we develop a low-complexity iterative algorithm to solve the problem with low complexity based on a well-known machine learning approach, i.e., variational inference. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can have a near ML performance. A salient feature of the proposed algorithm is that its complexity is independent of the number of active transmit antennas, whereas an exhaustive search for the ML problem requires a complexity that grows exponentially with the number of active transmit antennas. This paper addresses point-to-point communication over block-fading channels with independent fading blocks. When both channel state information at the transmitter and receiver (CSIR) are available, most achievable schemes use separable coding, i.e., coding independently and in parallel over different fading states. Unfortunately, separable coding has drawbacks, including large memory requirements at both communication ends. In this paper, a lattice coding and decoding scheme is proposed that achieves the ergodic capacity without separable coding, with lattice codebooks and decoding decision regions that are universal across channel realizations. We first demonstrate this result for fading distributions with discrete, finite support whose sequences are robustly typical. Results are then extended to continuous fading distributions, as well as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In addition, a variant of the proposed scheme is presented for the MIMO ergodic fading channel with CSIR only, where we prove the existence of a universal codebook that achieves rates within a constant gap to capacity for finite-support fading distributions. Cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is an alternative topology for future wireless networks, where a large number of single-antenna access points (APs) are distributed over the coverage area. There are no cells but all users are jointly served by the APs using network MIMO methods. Prior works have claimed that the CF massive MIMO inherits the basic properties of cellular massive MIMO, namely, channel hardening and favorable propagation. In this paper, we evaluate if one can rely on these properties when having a realistic stochastic AP deployment. Our results show that channel hardening only appears in special cases, for example, when the pathloss exponent is small. However, by using 5–10 antennas per AP, instead of one, we can substantially improve the hardening. Only spatially well-separated users will exhibit favorable propagation, but when adding more antennas and/or reducing the pathloss exponent, it becomes more likely for favorable propagation to occur. The conclusion is that we cannot rely on the channel hardening and the favorable propagation when analyzing and designing the CF massive MIMO networks, but we need to use achievable rate expressions and resource allocation schemes that work well also in the absence of these properties. In wireless communication systems, channel state feedback (CSF) is widely used to improve link performance. However, CSF consumes extra system resources and results in transmission overhead. In this paper, we evaluate such resource consumption in terms of bit rate and provide an explicit expression for the lower bound of the CSF overhead. We propose an overhead optimization mechanism under the constraint of channel state reconstruction accuracy. The numerical simulations show that our paper is beneficial to select the optimum CSF parameters, including the average bit number and channel state feedback period. It is also shown that the proposed overhead optimization scheme is able to reduce the system resource consumption with a guaranteed reconstruction accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates the achievable performance of cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with low resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) at both the access points (APs) and users. A closed-form expression for the achievable rate is derived, which enables the study of the effects of AP number, antenna number per AP, user number, and ADC resolution on the achievable rate. In addition, a simple asymptotic approximation for the individual user rate is presented, which shows that the user rate is mainly constrained by the ADC resolution at the user. Moreover, we propose an ADC resolution bits allocation scheme aiming at maximizing the sum rate subject to the total ADC resolution bits constraint, which substantially outperforms the equal ADC resolution bits allocation scheme. Furthermore, a max–min power control scheme is proposed, which not only ensures user fairness, but also improves the achievable rate. This paper studies multi-user multi-cell visible light communications networks in which each cell is composed of multiple light emitting diode (LED) arrays. The use of multiple LED transmitters enables each cell to support multiple users by means of precoding techniques. In such multi-user multi-cell networks, the signal for each user can be severely interfered not only by the signals that are intended to other users in the same cell, i.e., intra-cell interference, but also by the signals for users of the other cells, i.e., inter-cell interference. While intra-cell interference can be handled by the underlying precoding scheme, it is hard to deal with the inter-cell one. This paper focuses on cell coordination/cooperation strategies and their corresponding coordinated/cooperative precoder designs as the approaches to alleviate, or possibly, to cancel out the inter-cell interference. We first derive lower and upper bounds on the capacity of Gaussian interference channels with amplitude constraints on the input and the interference. Capitalizing on derived bounds and the zero-forcing scheme as the underlying precoding technique, optimal coordinated/cooperative precoding designs to maximize users’ sum-rate are investigated under the non-negativity and amplitude-limited constraints on the channel inputs. In conventional multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems with frequency division duplexing (FDD), channel acquisition and precoder optimization processes have been designed separately although they are highly coupled. This paper studies an end-to-end design of downlink MU-MIMO systems which include pilot sequences, limited feedback, and precoding. To address this problem, we propose a novel deep learning (DL) framework which jointly optimizes the feedback information generation at users and the precoder design at a base station (BS). Each procedure in the MU-MIMO systems is replaced by intelligently designed multiple deep neural networks (DNN) units. At the BS, a neural network generates pilot sequences and helps the users obtain accurate channel state information. At each user, the channel feedback operation is carried out in a distributed manner by an individual user DNN. Then, another BS DNN collects feedback information from the users and determines the MIMO precoding matrices. A joint training algorithm is proposed to optimize all DNN units in an end-to-end manner. In addition, a training strategy which can avoid retraining for different network sizes for a scalable design is proposed. The cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CFmMIMO) aims to provide uniform quality of service (QoS) for all users, and can be used in small-area scenarios such as indoor industrial networks. This paper studies the CFmMIMO system for indoor industrial scenarios. Firstly, an access point (AP) grouping based hierarchical network topology is proposed. Based on this, we propose an effective AP selection method. To reduce pilot contamination, a pilot assignment scheme based on inspection robot (IR) location is proposed. Considering the high reliability requirement of industrial data transmission, the power control and backhaul combining are jointly optimized to maximize the minimum signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR). The scalability of the proposed CFmMIMO system is analyzed, and a scalable power control method is proposed. The simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the AP selection method, pilot assignment scheme, and the joint optimization algorithm for power control and backhaul combining. Based on the efficient generalized water-filling with group peak power constraints (GWFGP), this paper proposes an iterative algorithm to compute the optimal solutions to system throughput (sum-rate) maximization problems. This class of problems is equipped with the multiuser multiple input multiple output multiple access channels (MU-MIMO MAC) in the general communication systems. The proposed iterative GWFGP algorithm (IGWFGP) has two levels of loops. The inner loop aims at computing the solution to each member in the family, while the outer loop aims at computing the solution to the target problem based on the results obtained by the inner loop. Both GWFGP and the convergence theory of an algorithm are used in the inner loop and the outer loop respectively. Furthermore, by exploiting the concept of variable weighting factor for covariance update, IGWFGP owns fast convergence and provides optimal solutions to the sum rate maximization problems. The usage of the convergence theory in IGWFGP and the algorithm of GWFGP are efficient and novel. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no prior algorithm has been reported in the open literature to solve the targeted problem in this paper. In addition, the proposed algorithm does not require to choose the initial value for computation. This paper studies a multiple-input–single-output (MISO) broadcast channel (BC) featuring simultaneous wireless information and power transfer, where a multiantenna access point (AP) delivers both information and energy via radio signals to multiple single-antenna receivers simultaneously, and each receiver implements either information decoding (ID) or energy harvesting (EH). In particular, pseudorandom sequences that are a priori known and therefore can be cancelled at each ID receiver are used as the energy signals, and the information-theoretically optimal dirty paper coding is employed for the information transmission. We characterize the capacity region for ID receivers by solving a sequence of weighted sum-rate (WSR) maximization (WSRMax) problems subject to a maximum sum-power constraint for the AP, and a set of minimum harvested power constraints for individual EH receivers. The problem corresponds to a new form of WSRMax problem in MISO-BC with combined maximum and minimum linear transmit covariance constraints (MaxLTCCs and MinLTCCs), which differs from the celebrated capacity region characterization problem for MISO-BC under a set of MaxLTCCs only and is challenging to solve. By extending the general BC–multiple-access-channel duality, which is only applicable to WSRMax problems with MaxLTCCs, and applying the ellipsoid method, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm to solve this problem globally optimally. Furthermore, we also propose two suboptimal algorithms with lower complexity by assuming that the information and energy signals are designed separately. Millimeter wave (mmWave) and massive MIMO systems are intrinsic components of 5G and beyond. These systems rely on using beamforming codebooks for both initial access and data transmission. Current beam codebooks, however, generally consist of a large number of narrow beams that scan all possible directions, leading to large training overhead. Further, these codebooks do not normally account for hardware impairments or possible non-uniform array geometries, and their calibration process is expensive. To overcome these limitations, this paper develops an efficient online machine learning framework that learns how to adapt the codebook beam patterns to the specific deployment, surrounding environment, user distribution, and hardware characteristics. This is done by designing a novel complex-valued neural network architecture in which the neuron weights directly model the beamforming weights of the analog phase shifters, accounting for the key hardware constraints. This model learns the codebook beams through online and self-supervised training avoiding the need for explicit channel state information. This respects the practical situations where the channel is imperfect or hard to obtain. This paper applies multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission methods to multiwire communication systems. Using channel matrices generated from a binder MIMO channel model, a performance assessment of digital subscriber line (DSL) technology based on MIMO transmission methods finds that symmetric data rates of more than 1 Gbps are achievable over four twisted pairs (category 3) for a 300 m range. This paper investigates a cache-aided cloud radio access network (C-RAN), comprising a central unit, $K$ base stations (BSs) each with $N_{T}$ antennas, and $M$ users each with $N_{R}$ antennas, where each BS and user have local caches to store some popular contents from the central unit. For this cache-aided network, we propose the linear network coded (NC) wireless caching that consists of linear wireless network coding assisted cache placement phase and signal-space alignment (SSA) enabled content delivery phase. In the cache placement phase, we design a joint NC caching function at the BSs to store linear combinations of messages from the central unit, as a form of linear wireless network coding. In the content delivery phase, we design the SSA pattern based on the NC caching to guide the precoding designs at BSs. Then, each user can reliably decode its requested messages by receiver shaping and reverse NC operation. The primary contribution of this work is to achieve the coding gain induced by the integration of linear wireless network coding and SSA, which has been not exploited in the field of wireless coded caching. In particular, to deal with high temporal variability of user requests, we show that the proposed cache placement is invariant to different user requests in the worst-case caching, without any shared caching messages at different BSs. Furthermore, we verify that the proposed scheme is also compatible with the insufficient caching scenario at the BSs. In addition, we analyze the achievable sum degrees of freedom (DoF) for the proposed caching network. This paper considers multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output systems, where the channels are spatially correlated Rician fading. The channel model is composed of a deterministic line-of-sight path and a stochastic non-line-of-sight component describing a practical spatially correlated multipath environment. We derive the statistical properties of the minimum mean squared error (MMSE), element-wise MMSE, and least-square channel estimates for this model. Using these estimates for maximum ratio combining and precoding, rigorous closed-form uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) achievable spectral efficiency (SE) expressions are derived and analyzed. The asymptotic SE behavior, when using the different channel estimators, are also analyzed. The numerical results show that the SE is higher when using the MMSE estimator than that of the other estimators, and the performance gap increases with the number of antennas. The matched-filter (MF) detector is the lowest complexity linear detector in practical MIMO spatial multiplexing systems. Its performance is significantly affected by the number of available antennas and an operating channel SNR. In this paper, we analyze the exact performance of the MF detector without any restrictions on the numbers of the transmit and receive antennas. To this end, we first develop the exact, closed-form expression of the MF detector output over uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels with an arbitrary number of antennas. Based on this result, we derive the exact closed-form bit error rate expressions for uncoded BPSK, QPSK, and $M$ -ary QAM signaling, which can be seen as the generalized forms of the conventional receiver diversity based on maximum ratio combining. We also elucidate the conditions on the numbers of antennas and channel SNR, where the use of MF detector should become effective. Furthermore, in the case of coded MIMO systems, we develop the optimal metric derived from the exact MF output. The corresponding mutual information justifies the simulated performance of LDPC-encoded MIMO spatial multiplexing with the MF detector over ideally interleaved Rayleigh fading channels. This paper investigates the joint user scheduling (US) and user association (UA) problem for OFDMA-based networks under the centralized radio access network (C-RAN) architecture. We first formulate the joint optimization problem for US and UA, which is intractable in its exact form, and therefore, we propose a corresponding upper bound problem, with much lower computational complexity, with the help of a novel continuous rate function. We show that the upper bound problem can be further converted into an equivalent convex optimization problem via geometric programming (GP) that can be solved with inter-baseband unit coordination, which is viable in the C-RAN architecture. Furthermore, we show that the solutions of the convex upper bound problem can be mapped into the solution space of the original joint US and UA problem with a small gap. As a practically implementable solution to the original problem, a heuristic-based scheduler has been developed to obtain quasi-optimal UA and US solutions for the uplink (UL) as well as the downlink (DL) transmissions. Massive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) systems can suffer from coherent intercell interference due to the phenomenon of pilot contamination. This paper investigates a two-layer decoding method that mitigates both coherent and non-coherent interference in multi-cell Massive MIMO. To this end, each base station (BS) first estimates the channels to intra-cell users using either minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) or element-wise MMSE estimation based on uplink pilots. The estimates are used for local decoding on each BS followed by a second decoding layer where the BSs cooperate to mitigate inter-cell interference. An uplink achievable spectral efficiency (SE) expression is computed for arbitrary two-layer decoding schemes. A closed form expression is then obtained for correlated Rayleigh fading, maximum-ratio combining, and the proposed large-scale fading decoding (LSFD) in the second layer. We also formulate a sum SE maximization problem with both the data power and LSFD vectors as optimization variables. Since this is an NP-hard problem, we develop a low-complexity algorithm based on the weighted MMSE approach to obtain a local optimum. Physical layer network coding (PNC) has been studied to serve wireless network MIMO systems with much lower backhaul load than approaches such as Cloud Radio Access Network (Cloud-RAN) and coordinated multipoint (CoMP). In this paper, we present a design guideline of engineering applicable PNC to fulfil the request of high user densities in 5G wireless RAN infrastructure. We show that the proposed design criteria guarantee that: 1) the whole system operates over binary system; 2) the PNC functions utilized at each access point overcome all singular fade states; and 3) the destination can unambiguously recover all source messages, while the overall backhaul load remains at the lowest level. We then develop a two-stage search algorithm to identify the optimum PNC mapping functions which greatly reduces the real-time computational complexity. The impact of estimated channel information and reduced number of singular fade states in different QAM modulation schemes are studied in this paper. In this paper, we study the effective capacity and quality of service (QoS) exponent for low-latency communications through multiple channels under fading. We consider both the cases where the instantaneous channel state information (CSI) and statistical CSI are available at a transmitter that may have sporadic traffics. In particular, when a fixed transmission rate is chosen by the transmitter with statistical CSI, we derive an upper-bound on the (packet) error probability, which can be used not only to guarantee a certain reliability but also to derive a lower-bound on the QoS exponent for short-packet transmissions under fading. Simulation results with short-length codes are obtained and compared with the derived bounds on the error probability and QoS exponent, which show that the derived bounds are reasonably tight to be used to guarantee reliability (in terms of the error probability) as well as latency (in terms of the QoS exponent). We propose and study the cooperative multi-input multi-output (MIMO) architecture to enable and improve the secrecy transmissions between clusters of mobile devices in the presence of an eavesdropper with certain location constraint. The cooperative MIMO system in this paper (referred to as reconfigurable distributed MIMO) is formed by temporarily activating clusters of nearby trusted mobile devices, with each cluster being centrally coordinated by its corresponding cluster head. We assume that the transmitters apply a practical eigendirection precoding scheme to transmit the confidential signal and artificial noise, while the eavesdropper can be located in multiple possible locations in the proximity. We first obtain the expression of the secrecy rate, where the required average mutual information between the transmitters and the eavesdropper is characterized by closed-form approximations. The proposed approximations are especially useful in the secrecy rate maximization, where the original non-convex problem can be solved by the successive convex approximations. Numerical results show that the secrecy rate can be significantly improved by leveraging the location constraint of the eavesdropper, compared to the existing result. This paper analyzes how the distortion created by hardware impairments in a multiple-antenna base station affects the uplink spectral efficiency (SE), with a focus on massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO). This distortion is correlated across the antennas but has been often approximated as uncorrelated to facilitate (tractable) SE analysis. To determine when this approximation is accurate, basic properties of distortion correlation are first uncovered. Then, we separately analyze the distortion correlation caused by third-order non-linearities and by quantization. Finally, we study the SE numerically and show that the distortion correlation can be safely neglected in massive MIMO when there are sufficiently many users. Under independent identically distributed Rayleigh fading and equal signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), this occurs for more than five transmitting users. Other channel models and SNR variations have only minor impact on the accuracy. We also demonstrate the importance of taking the distortion characteristics into account in the receive combining. The availability of accurate channel state information (CSI) is essential in multiuser massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. However, most published works focus on frequency-flat channel estimation which requires that the estimation must be repeated for every frequency slot, e.g., subcarrier, in a broadband system. Since the channels in the frequency-domain are the Fourier transform of a small set of time-domain channel coefficients, the time-domain channel estimation requires that fewer parameters be estimated. In this paper, we propose a semi-blind, time-domain, channel estimation technique for frequency-selective massive MIMO systems. Our solution depends on the subspace spanned by the signal eigenvectors of the received signal covariance matrix. Importantly, since the receiver samples at the symbol rate, time-domain-based estimation inherently has available enough samples for an accurate matrix estimate. To avoid asymptotic assumptions, we express each channel vector as a linear combination of the signal eigenvectors. We estimate the linear combination using a set of training symbols. Given the many samples of the received signal in the time-domain, we obtain a better channel estimate compared to conventional subcarrier-wise frequency-domain channel estimation. Unlike the previous published results, in this paper, we do not assume orthogonality of users’ channels or knowledge of large-scale fading coefficients. Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology equips the transmitters with the multiple antennas. It can combine with energy harvesting (EH) to lift the spectrum efficiency and make use of a greener energy resource. A power grid is added to serve as a supplementary source to regulate the not-so-stable harvested energy supply of the system. Besides the MIMO technology being used, the power allocated to the user provided by both EH and the power grid is subject to the epoch power upper bound constraints. The background of these constraints comes from field requirements, such as avoiding the saturation of power allocated to the user(s), avoiding system-level out-of-band power leakage, and reducing interference with other transmitter(s) due to the non-linearity generated via the transmitting mechanisms to the user(s). The epoch power upper bound constraints make this problem more challenging, with the controllable power grid energy budget and its allocation. This paper applies our recently proposed geometric water-filling with group upper bounded power constraints and recursion machinery to form the proposed algorithm for solving the proposed throughput maximization problem. Our algorithm is precisely defined, and further provides the exact solution via the lower degree polynomial complexity. This point is very suitable for the massive MIMO system. Multi-channel (MC) optical wireless communication (OWC) systems employing wave-division multiplexing for outdoors free-space optical communications, or multi-user time-division multiple access for indoors visible-light communications, e.g., can be modeled as parallel channels. Multi-input multi-output OWC systems can also be transformed, possibly with some performance loss, to parallel channels using pre-/post-coding. Studying the performance of such MC-OWC systems requires characterizing the capacity of the underlying parallel channels. In this paper, upper and lower bounds on the capacity of constant parallel OWC channels with a total average intensity constraint are derived. Then, this paper focuses on finding intensity allocations that maximize the lower bounds given channel-state information at the transmitter (CSIT). Due to its nonconvexity, the Karush–Kuhn–Tucker conditions are used to describe a list of candidate allocations. Instead searching exhaustively for the best solution, low-complexity near-optimal algorithms are proposed. The resulting optimized lower bound nearly coincides with capacity at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Under a quasi-static channel model and in the absence of CSIT, outage probability upper and lower bounds are derived. Those bounds also meet at high SNR, thus characterizing the outage capacity in this regime. Finally, the results are extended to a system with both average and peak intensity constraints. The integration of local device-to-device (D2D) communications and cellular connections has been intensively studied to satisfy co-existing D2D and cellular communication demand. In future cellular networks, there will be numerous standby users possessing D2D communication capabilities in close proximity to each other. Considering that these standby users do not necessarily request D2D communications all the time, in this paper we propose a hybrid D2D-cellular scheme to make use of these standby users and to improve the rate performance for cellular users. More specifically, through D2D links, a virtual antenna array can be formed by sharing antennas across different terminals to realize the diversity gain of MIMO channels. This paper considers the use of millimeter wave links to enable high data rate D2D communications. We then design an orthogonal D2D multiple access protocol and formulate the optimization problem of joint cellular and D2D resource allocation for downlink transmissions using the proposed scheme. We obtain a closed-form solution for D2D resource allocation, which reveals useful insights for practical system design. Hardware calibration is essential to restore the uplink/downlink channel reciprocity for multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems operating in a time division duplexing mode. Unfortunately, due to the associated overhead, calibration cannot be performed frequently; furthermore, any calibration procedure leaves behind a residual mismatch between the uplink and downlink channels. In this paper, we study the effects of these calibration errors on the achievable rates in the downlink of a multi-cell, multi-user, and distributed massive MIMO system. Specifically, we develop accurate, yet simple, lower-bounds on the per-user achievable rate, assuming either zero-forcing (ZF) or matched filtering (MF) are used. We also introduce a performance loss coefficient as a measure of sensitivity of the performance to the calibration errors. Using this measure, we identify the conditions under which ZF precoding is more sensitive to calibration errors than MF. Finally, we consider the robust weighted sum-rate maximization problem to mitigate the degrading effects of non-ideal calibration. Our numerical experiments show that the rate lower-bounds developed in this paper accurately quantify the impacts of non-ideal calibration on performance. Communication at millimeter wave frequencies will be one of the essential new technologies in 5G. Acquiring an accurate channel estimate is the key to facilitate advanced millimeter wave hybrid multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) precoding techniques. Millimeter wave MIMO channel estimation, however, suffers from a considerably increased channel use overhead. This happens due to the limited number of radio frequency (RF) chains that prevent the digital baseband from directly accessing the signal at each antenna. To address this issue, recent research has focused on adaptive closed-loop and two-way channel estimation techniques. In this paper, unlike the prior approaches, we study a non-adaptive, hence rather simple, open-loop millimeter wave MIMO channel estimation technique. We present a random phase rotation design of channel subspace sampling signals and show that they obey the restricted isometry property (RIP) with high probability. We then formulate the channel estimation as a low-rank subspace decomposition problem and, based on the RIP, show that the proposed framework reveals resilience to a low signal-to-noise ratio. It is revealed that the required number of channel uses ensuring a bounded estimation error is linearly proportional to the degrees of freedom of the channel, whereas it converges to a constant value if the number of RF chains can grow proportionally to the channel dimension while keeping the channel rank fixed. In particular, we show that the tighter the RIP characterization the lower the channel estimation error is. We also devise an iterative technique that effectively finds a suboptimal, but stationary, solution to the formulated problem. The proposed technique is shown to have improved channel estimation accuracy with a substantially low channel use overhead as compared to that of previous closed-loop and two-way adaptation techniques. This paper considers the uplink of multiuser multiple-input multiple-output systems, where several mobile stations (MSs) cooperatively transmit hybrid messages, including common messages and private messages, to a single base station (BS). We aim to jointly design transmit precoding at the MSs’ side and antenna selection at the BS side to maximize the achievable system throughput while reducing implementation complexity. The problem at hand is nonconvex and difficult to solve due to the antenna selection constraint. By exploiting the problem structure and linear relaxation, we propose using the Frank–Wolfe method and the well-known weighted mean-square error minimization approach to tackle the problem, leading to an efficient iterative algorithm. Moreover, due to the large number of antennas, the sparsity of antenna selection is also taken into account by introducing an $l_{0}$ -norm penalty function into the objective function. To tackle this nonconvex and discontinuous problem, we resort to quadratic approximation with smooth optimization and extend our proposed algorithm to the sparse optimization problem. Zero-forcing (ZF) precoding plays an important role for massive MIMO downlink due to its near optimal performance. However, the high computation cost of the involved matrix inversion hinders its application. In this paper, we adopt the first order Neumann series (NS) for a low-complexity approximation. By introducing a relaxation parameter jointly with the channel non-orthogonality between one selected user and others into the precondition matrix, we propose the identity-plus-column NS (ICNS) method. By further choosing the user with the least channel orthogonality with others, the ordered ICNS method is also proposed. Moreover, the sum-rate approximations of the proposed ICNS method and the competitive existing identity matrix based NS (INS) method are derived in closed-form, based on which the performance loss of ICNS due to inversion approximation compared with ideal ZF and its performance gain over INS are explicitly analyzed for three typical massive MIMO scenarios. Finally, simulations verify our analytical results and also show that the proposed two designs achieve better performance-complexity tradeoff than ideal ZF and existing low-complexity ZF precodings for practical large antenna number, correlated channels, and not-so-small loading factor. Social and communication networks interact with each other in multifaceted ways, yet these interactions are often considered to be secondary in throughput, privacy and security analysis for communication networks. In this paper, full-duplex (FD) and half-duplex (HD) multi-antenna cooperative communication systems are studied by taking both physical links and social connections into account. An optimal beamformer for maximizing communication rate in the proposed socio-technological setting aims to balance between the direct link and the cooperating link as well as respecting the trust degree between the users. The resulting optimization problems are nontrivial to solve, even numerically, as they are not convex. The complexity of the problems is significantly reduced by showing that a linear combination of the direct and cooperating links’ channel vectors maximizes the achievable rate. Then, a computationally efficient numerical solution is used to maximize the rates both in the FD and HD modes. This paper investigates methods to achieve high-rate data transmission through metallic barriers using ultrasound. Multiple-input-multiple-output-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) is employed in conjunction with interference mitigation techniques to reduce throughput-limiting crosstalk. Several crosstalk mitigation strategies are investigated and their theoretical and practical bit-loaded data rates are determined for the general case of $A$ transmitters and $A$ receivers ($A \times A$ MIMO). A physical MIMO acoustic-electric channel array is formed using a 40 mm (1.575 in) thick steel barrier with seven pairs of 4 MHz nominal resonant frequency piezoelectric disk transducers, each with 10 mm (0.394 in) diameter. To investigate the effects of crosstalk, the transducers are closely spaced, and each transmitter–receiver pair is coaxially aligned on opposing sides of the metallic barrier. It is shown that, with the use of crosstalk mitigation techniques, the aggregate multichannel theoretical capacity performance scales linearly with the number of channels. This paper also investigates the use of novel power allocation techniques in a MIMO-OFDM acoustic-electric channel, which show significant throughput performance gains over conventional bit-loading and greedy bit-filling techniques. Finally, this paper presents a study on the effects of transducer misalignment on the multichannel theoretical capacity and achievable data transmission rates using bit-loading techniques. In this paper, we investigate the simultaneous wireless information and power transfer in a multiple-input multiple-output decode-and-forward relay system, where the relay is an energy harvesting (EH) multi-antenna node equipped with an EH receiver and an information decoding (ID) receiver. The relay harvests the energy from the radio frequency signals sent by the source and uses it to forward the signals to the destination. The main objective in this paper is to maximize the achievable transmission rate of the overall link by optimizing the source/relay precoders. First, we study an upper bound on the maximum achievable rate where we assume that the EH and ID receivers operate simultaneously and have access to the whole power of the received signals. Afterward, we study two practical schemes, which are the power splitting and time switching schemes, where the ID and EH receivers have partial access to the power or duration of the received signals. For each scheme, we have studied the complexity and the performance comparison. In addition, we considered the case of the imperfect channel estimation error and we have observed its impact on the achievable end-to-end rate and the harvested energy at the relay. This paper considers a K-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channel (IC) where 1) the channel state information obtained by the transmitters (CSIT) is completely outdated and 2) the number of transmit antennas at each transmitter, i.e., M is greater than the number of receive antennas at each user, i.e., N. The usefulness of the delayed CSIT was first identified in a K-phase retrospective interference alignment (RIA) scheme proposed by Maddah-Ali and Tse for the multiple-input single-output broadcast channel, but the extension to the MIMO IC is a non-trivial step as each transmitter only has the message intended for the corresponding user. Recently, Abdoli et al. focused on a single-input single-output IC and solved such bottleneck by inventing a K-phase RIA with distributed overheard interference retransmission. In this paper, we propose two K-phase RIA schemes suitable for the MIMO IC by generalizing and integrating some key features of both Abdoli's and Maddah-Ali's works. The two schemes jointly yield the best known sum degrees-of-freedom (DoF) performance so far. For the case (M/N)≥K, the achieved sum DoF is asymptotically given by (64/15)N when K→∞. In this paper, two major multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) transmission techniques such as spatial modulation (SM) and spatial multiplexing (SMX) are considered. In particular, the focus is on an interference scenario, where an SM MIMO system interferes with a conventional SMX MIMO system. The interference caused by SM has a peculiar behavior. In SMX MIMO networks, the interference subspace is fixed in a given coherence time interval. It can be estimated accurately, and interference suppression techniques can be applied accordingly. However, the interference caused by an SM system has no fixed interference subspace, and it changes in every single channel use. Therefore, SM interference could pose some unique challenges to SMX MIMO systems in some scenarios. In this paper, the effect of SM interference on SMX MIMO systems and methods to overcome/reduce the adverse effects caused by SM interference are studied.
