Quantum error mitigation (QEM) is a class of promising techniques for reducing the computational error of variational quantum algorithms. In general, the computational error reduction comes at the cost of a sampling overhead due to the variance-boosting effect caused by the channel inversion operation, which ultimately limits the applicability of QEM. Existing sampling overhead analysis of QEM typically assumes exact channel inversion, which is unrealistic in practical scenarios. In this treatise, we consider a practical channel inversion strategy based on Monte Carlo sampling, which introduces additional computational error that in turn may be eliminated at the cost of an extra sampling overhead. In particular, we show that when the computational error is small compared to the dynamic range of the error-free results, it scales with the square root of the number of gates. By contrast, the error exhibits a linear scaling with the number of gates in the absence of QEM under the same assumptions. Hence, the error scaling of QEM remains to be preferable even without the extra sampling overhead. Our analytical results are accompanied by numerical examples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes an efficient simulation method based on importance sampling to estimate the random-coding error probability of coded modulation. The technique is valid for complex-valued modulations over Gaussian channels, channels with memory, and naturally extends to fading channels. The simulation method is built on two nested importance samplers to respectively estimate the pairwise error probability and generate the channel input and output. The effect of the respective number of samples on the overall bias and variance of the estimate of the error probability is characterized. For a memoryless channel, the estimator is shown to be consistent and with a small variance, growing with the square root of the code length, rather than the exponential growth of a standard Monte Carlo estimator. This paper introduces a time-domain nondata-aided maximum-likelihood (ML) estimation of Doppler frequency for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) over doubly selective fading channels with the Clarke–Jakes–Doppler spectrum. The proposed approach adopts the repetitive signal structure of OFDM, such as the cyclic prefix, which can be used for synchronization purpose. The originally derived ML estimation results in a high computational cost; therefore, after gaining insights into the log-likelihood function, we further design an algorithm with reduced complexity. The proposed algorithm only has a complexity $\sim O(QN_{d})$ , where $Q$ and $N_{d}$ denote the numbers of repetitive parts and samples in a repetitive part, respectively. In contrast to conventional works based on (data aided) channel estimates and/or assuming that channels are flat fading, the proposed method employs the cyclostationary feature of received signals and is not sensitive to channel estimation error and unknown channel phases. Furthermore, the Cramér–Rao lower bounds of the Doppler frequency estimate over nonline-of-sight (NLOS) and line-of-sight multipath fading channels are analyzed. Channel reciprocity in time-division duplexing (TDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems can be exploited to reduce the overhead required for the acquisition of channel state information (CSI). However, perfect reciprocity is unrealistic in practical systems due to random radio-frequency (RF) circuit mismatches in uplink and downlink channels. This can result in a significant degradation in the performance of linear precoding schemes, which are sensitive to the accuracy of the CSI. In this paper, we model and analyse the impact of RF mismatches on the performance of linear precoding in a TDD multi-user massive MIMO system, by taking the channel estimation error into considerations. We use the truncated Gaussian distribution to model the RF mismatch, and derive closed-form expressions of the output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio for maximum ratio transmission and zero forcing precoders. We further investigate the asymptotic performance of the derived expressions, to provide valuable insights into the practical system designs, including useful guidelines for the selection of the effective precoding schemes. We address multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication employing spatial modulation (SM) with dual-polarized (DP) antennas. The proposed architecture adds the polarization dimension to the conventional SM mappings and offers performances, which are comparable to or under certain conditions even better than those of the uni-polarized systems while occupying half as much space. We consider the generalized spatially correlated Rayleigh and Rician fading channel models and present an average bit-error probability upper bounding framework for the proposed DP SM-MIMO system. The theoretical error analysis is also extended to the case where the channel coefficients are estimated with Gaussian estimation errors. This upper bounding method is also used to determine the conditions in which the dual-polarized SM is better than equivalent systems with uni-polarized antennas. Theoretical derivations are also validated by extensive simulations, both corroborating that SM combined with dual-polarization forms an attractive alternative not only for its improved multiplexing gains and space efficiency but also for performance gains over correlated channels. In most of compressed sensing (CS) contributions, the sparsity of interesting signals is usually assumed to be prior. It may incur performance degradation of CS in such environments, where the sparsity order of channel occupancy changes dynamically. Therefore, sparsity order estimation (SOE) is vital, so that the sampling rate can be adjusted adaptively to exploit fully CS techniques. This paper studies the SOE problem for wideband cognitive radio. To investigate this issue, at first, the theoretical expression of sparsity order of the considered signals is derived via random matrix theory. The theoretical analysis shows that the sparsity order can be expressed with the ratio, which consists of the trace of measured signals’ covariance matrix, compression sampling ratio, signal-to-noise ratio, and so on. And then, according to the theoretical expressions, a novel SOE approach is presented. In the proposed method, the trace of measured signals’ covariance matrix is first calculated, and second, the sparsity order is estimated based on the trace. Compared with the previous work, the proposed algorithm, besides the lower computational complexity, has some superior performance, such as better robustness, smaller SOE error, and so on. Tag population estimation has recently attracted significant research attention due to its paramount importance on a variety of radio-frequency identification (RFID) applications. However, most, if not all, of the existing estimation mechanisms are proposed for the static case where tag population remains constant during the estimation process, thus leaving the more challenging dynamic case unaddressed, despite the fundamental importance of the latter case on both the theoretical analysis and the practical application. In order to bridge this gap, we devote this paper to designing a generic framework of stable and accurate tag population estimation schemes based on the Kalman filter for both the static and dynamic RFID systems. Technically, we first model the dynamics of RFID systems as discrete stochastic processes and leverage the techniques in the extended Kalman filter and cumulative sum control chart to estimate tag population for both the static and dynamic systems. By employing the Lyapunov drift analysis, we mathematically characterize the performance of the proposed framework in terms of estimation accuracy and convergence speed by deriving the closed-form conditions on the design parameters under which our scheme can stabilize around the real population size with bounded relative estimation error that tends to zero with exponential convergence rate. To localize the wireless sensor networks nodes, only the hop-based information (i.e., hops’ number, average hop size, and so on) has been, so far, exploited by range-free techniques, with poor-accuracy, however. In this paper, we show that localization accuracy may greatly benefit from joint exploitation, at no cost, of the information already provided by the forwarding nodes (i.e., relays) between each anchor (i.e., position aware) and sensor nodes pair. As such, we develop a novel range-free localization algorithm, derive its average location estimation error (LEE) in closed-form, and compare it in LEE performance with the best representative algorithms in the literature. We show that the proposed algorithm outperforms them in accuracy. In contrast to the latter, we further prove that it is able to achieve an LEE average and variance of about 0 when the number of sensors is large enough, thereby achieving an unprecedented accuracy performance among range-free techniques. Adapting the power of secondary users (SUs) while adhering to constraints on the interference caused to primary receivers (PRxs) is a critical issue in underlay cognitive radio (CR). This adaptation is driven by the interference and transmit power constraints imposed on the secondary transmitter (STx). Its performance also depends on the quality of channel state information (CSI) available at the STx of the links from the STx to the secondary receiver and to the PRxs. For a system in which an STx is subject to an average interference constraint or an interference outage probability constraint at each of the PRxs, we derive novel symbol error probability (SEP)-optimal, practically motivated binary transmit power control policies. As a reference, we also present the corresponding SEP-optimal continuous transmit power control policies for one PRx. We then analyze the robustness of the optimal policies when the STx knows noisy channel estimates of the links between the SU and the PRxs. Altogether, our work develops a holistic understanding of the critical role played by different transmit and interference constraints in driving power control in underlay CR and the impact of CSI on its performance. In this paper, we demonstrate that the sampling property of a delta function can be used to quantify integration dynamically. The proposed approach reduces integration to a sampling. The sampling point is obtained in terms of a constant or fading parameter. We illustrate an example using Rayleigh fading channel. We investigate the dynamic behavior of the sampling error probability, relative error and sampling point error of the proposed integration. We extend the result to the general order rectangular QAM with Nakagami-n fading. In this paper, power allocation between pilots and data symbols is investigated to maximize energy efficiency (EE) for downlink orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) networks. We first derive an EE function considering channel estimation error, which depends on large-scale channel gains of multiple users, allocated power to pilots and data symbols, and circuit power consumption. Then an optimization problem is formulated to maximize the EE under overall transmit power constraint. Exploiting the quasiconcavity property of the EE function, we propose an alternating optimization method in the low transmit power region and reformulate a joint quasiconcave problem in the high transmit power region. Analysis and simulation results show that the power ratio for pilots decreases with the circuit power. When the circuit power is small, the optimal overall transmit power increases with the circuit power. Otherwise, the optimal transmit power does not depend on it. Transmitting more data symbols to the users with higher channel gains improves the EE but at a cost of sacrificing the fairness among multiple users. Simulation results also demonstrate that compared with spectral efficiency (SE)-oriented design, the EE-oriented design can improve the EE performance significantly with a relatively small SE loss. A log-max generalized bit log-likelihood ratio (GLLR) was derived in an earlier work of Wang et al. for soft decision decoding of quadrature amplitude modulation that takes into account channel estimation error. The results in the above paper show that the GLLR metric outperforms the conventional LLR metric that does not account for channel estimation error. In trying to reproduce the results of the above paper, our simulations indicate that their results were obtained without proper scaling of the transmit constellation. Conversely, through simulations, we demonstrate that by properly scaling the constellation to have unity average energy, the GLLR metric does not result in a noticeable advantage in the bit error rate over the conventional LLR metric for practically meaningful values of the channel estimation error.
