Magnetic random-access memory (MRAM) is a promising memory technology due to its high density, non-volatility, and high endurance. However, achieving high memory fidelity incurs high write-energy costs, which should be reduced for large-scale deployment of MRAMs. In this paper, we formulate a biconvex optimization problem to optimize write fidelity given energy and latency constraints. The basic idea is to allocate non-uniform write pulses depending on the importance of each bit position. The fidelity measure we consider is mean squared error (MSE), for which we optimize write pulses via alternating convex search (ACS). We derive analytic solutions and propose an alternating water-filling algorithm by casting the MRAM’s write operation as communication over parallel channels. Hence, the proposed alternating water-filling algorithm is computationally more efficient than the original ACS while their solutions are identical. Since the formulated biconvex problem is non-convex, both the original ACS and the proposed algorithm do not guarantee global optimality. However, the MSEs obtained by the proposed algorithm are comparable to the MSEs by complicated global nonlinear programming solvers. Furthermore, we prove that our algorithm can reduce the MSE exponentially with the number of bits per word. For an 8-bit accessed word, the proposed algorithm reduces the MSE by a factor of 21. We also evaluate MNIST dataset classification supposing that the model parameters of deep neural networks are stored in MRAMs. The numerical results show that the optimized write pulses can achieve 40% write-energy reduction for the same classification accuracy. This paper investigates different precoding strategies for rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) in the downlink of multi-cell visible light communication (VLC) networks. Since classical Shannon capacity formula does not hold for VLC, we first provide a lower bound on the channel capacity for RSMA in such interfering networks. Then, we formulate a spectral efficiency maximization problem to jointly find the optimal rate-splitting and transmit precoding. Beside that, since cell-edge users suffer from additional inter-cell interference, we propose to design the precoders of different RSMA signals utilizing coordinated beamforming (CB). Subsequently, aiming to improve the performance of the CB design for RSMA, while maintain a reduced complexity, we introduce two enhanced precoding strategies for RSMA. To the best of the authors’ knowledge such a contribution has not been considered before in the open literature. It is shown in the paper that the formulated optimization problem is non-convex and a sub-optimal, yet, a low complexity solution can be obtained efficiently using semi-definite relaxation combined with successive convex approximation. Through analytical results, we illustrate the flexibility and superiority of the proposed precoding strategies for RSMA over conventional coordinated space division multiple access and non-orthogonal multiple access for different scenarios and network loads. This paper studies the capacity of the two-user intensity-modulation/direct-detection (IM/DD) interference channel (IC), which is relevant in the context of multi-user optical wireless communications. Despite some known single-letter capacity characterizations for general discrete-memoryless ICs, a computable capacity expression for the IM/DD IC is missing. In this paper, we provide tight and easily computable inner and outer bounds for a general two-user IM/DD IC under peak and average optical intensity constraints. The bounds enable characterizing the asymptotic sum-rate capacity in the strong and weak interference regimes, as well as the generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) in the symmetric case. Using the obtained bounds, the GDoF of the IM/DD IC is shown to have a ‘W’ shape similar to the Gaussian IC with power constraints. The obtained bounds are also evaluated numerically in different interference regimes to show their tightness, and used to study the performance of on-chip and indoor OWC systems. The combination of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been recognized as a critical method to improve the sixth generation networks performance. In this paper, a distributed RIS-aided downlink multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) NOMA systems with discrete phase shifts are studied, where the channel directions from base station to paired users can be manipulated with the assistance of RISs by employing the concept of signal alignment. In order to ensure base station can flexibly serve some users with NOMA and others users with spatial division multiple access, a unified precoder and decoder are provide to cancel inter-cluster interference. Subsequently, the channel statistics over Nakagami- $m$ fading channels are derived for near and far users. In particular, considering the cascade channel gain may exists two different cases, Beaulieu series is further adopted to characterize their corresponding cumulative distribution function. In what follows, the outage probability and ergodic rate for three situations within one cluster are derived by utilizing the obtained channel statistics, respectively. Based on the derived results, we also analyze the diversity order and high signal-to-noise ratio slope to provide essential insights into the considered systems. Finally, simulation results are presented to reveal that: 1) selecting the setting of 3-bits resolution can realize a near-aligned performance for our proposed systems; 2) the cascade channel statistic caused by RIS can be evaluated with any number of RIS element and any channel gain via Beaulieu series. This paper presents a part of our ground-breaking work on evaluation of buildings in terms of wireless friendliness at the building-design stage. The main goal is to devise building design practices that provide for a good performance of wireless networks deployed in buildings. In this paper, the interference gain (IG) and power gain (PG) are defined as two figures of merit (FoM) of the wireless performance of buildings. The FoMs bridge the gap between building design and wireless communications industries. An approach to derive exact closed-form equations for these FoMs is proposed for the first time. The derived analytic expressions facilitate straightforward and more computationally efficient numerical evaluation of the proposed FoMs as compared to Monte Carlo simulations for well-known indoor propagation models. It is shown that the derived closed-form expression can be readily employed to evaluate the impact of building properties, such as the sizes and the aspect ratios (ARs) of rooms, on the wireless performance. Underwater environments create a challenging channel for communications. In this paper, we design a novel receiver system by exploring the machine learning technique–Deep Belief Network (DBN) – to combat the signal distortion caused by the Doppler effect and multi-path propagation. We evaluate the performance of the proposed receiver system in both simulation experiments and sea trials. Our proposed receiver system comprises of DBN based de-noising and classification of the received signal. First, the received signal is segmented into frames before the each of these frames is individually pre-processed using a novel pixelization algorithm. Then, using the DBN based de-noising algorithm, features are extracted from these frames and used to reconstruct the received signal. Finally, DBN based classification of the reconstructed signal occurs. Our proposed DBN based receiver system does show better performance in channels influenced by the Doppler effect and multi-path propagation with a performance improvement of 13.2dB at 10−3 Bit Error Rate (BER). The visible light communication (VLC) can provide data transmission via the illumination light emitting diodes (LED). This paper introduces a new model to analyze the bit error rate (BER) of binary phase modulation in VLC for an arbitrary modulation depth and data duty cycle while taking into account both the Gaussian and signal-dependent shot noise. The impact of the driver design on the BER and its impact on ripple have not been considered in detail before. We compare two different LED driver schemes, namely directly adapting the driver control loop and binary shunting. We address data rate, BER, and power efficiency, for which we propose to use the extra energy per symbol above unmodulated light. We further introduce an analysis of the effect that (truncated) ripple interference has in the (matched or other) filter of the receiver. Ripple causes a harmful interference in VLC, and thus a BER expression is derived to include its effect. Two approximations are proposed to model the ripple interference, and their accuracies are compared by simulations. In this paper, a new two-phase-feedback-based user-scheduling-and-beamforming method is proposed for multi-user multiple-input multiple-output downlink in the context of two-stage beamforming. The key ideas of the proposed method are: 1) to use a set of orthogonal reference beams and construct a cone around each reference beam to select “nearly-optimal” semi-orthogonal users based only on channel quality indicator feedback; and 2) to apply post-user-selection beam design with zero-forcing beamforming (ZFBF) based on channel state information (CSI) feedback only from the selected users. It is proven that the proposed scheduling-and-beamforming method is asymptotically optimal as the number of users increase. Furthermore, the proposed scheduling-and-beamforming method almost achieves the performance of the existing semi-orthogonal user selection with ZFBF that requires full CSI for all users, with a significantly reduced amount of required channel information which is even less than that required by random beamforming. In this paper, we propose a mechanism to ensure the proper functioning of a wireless sensor network (WSN) in the presence of static and proactive jammer within the network. Existing research works have primarily focused on the detection of jammer node within the network and ameliorating its consequent effects on the network. However, these countermeasures to mitigate the effect of the jammer suffer from certain limitations as WSNs are primarily resource constrained and most of the countermeasures are computationally intensive. The objective of this paper is to prevent the disruption of the network in the presence of jamming by bypassing the jammed zone and setting up alternative paths. The alternative paths are chosen with the maximum link quality in order to maintain the quality of service of the network even after jamming. This paper proposes Link-quality Aware Path SElection (LAPSE) algorithm that chooses alternative paths based on the optimal link quality. LAPSE is based on optimal decision rule and its design considers the fallible nature of the nodes while choosing/rejecting a particular link. Finally, the performance of the proposed algorithm, LAPSE, is evaluated in terms of the network parameters—packet delivery rate, network throughput, transmission energy, node lifetime, and network lifetime. In this paper, we study the capacity and symbol error probability (SEP) of generalized spatial modulation (GSM) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) using measured channels that are obtained by channel sounding in an indoor office environment at 60GHz. Spatial modulation (SM) and GSM are emerging low-complexity MIMO schemes that have been extensively researched for low-GHz (below 6GHz) communications. Recently, they have been considered and shown to be promising also for (mmWave) communications. In the simplest possible case, they require only one RF chain both at the transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX), and thus, are especially attractive for mmWave communications, in which the number of RF chains needs to be as low as possible. Despite of some early works on the theoretical analysis of SM/GSM for mmWave communications, there have been no investigations using real-world channel data. We focus on the office line-of-sight (LOS) scenario and investigate three problems: 1) the performance of GSM using the extracted LOS component of measured channels; 2) the impact of non-LOS NLOS components on the performance of GSM; and 3) possible simple modulation and reception algorithms for GSM that rely only on the LOS component of the channel. The results being reported in this paper not only validate the main claims of previous studies based on ideal pure LOS channels, but also lead to novel findings. One major conclusion is that NLOS components are harmful to the SEP of GSM and should be avoided. As another important outcome, our results strongly motivate the use of precoding in GSM systems to simultaneously improve the channel capacity and reduce the physical size of MIMO arrays (thus eliminating one major issue of LOS GSM). This paper investigates the design of non-binary protograph low-density parity-check codes for the Poisson channel with $m$ -ary pulse position modulation. The field order over which the code is constructed is matched to the pulse position modulation order yielding a coded modulation scheme. The optimization of the low-density parity-check code structure is performed via protograph density evolution on a surrogate $m$ -ary erasure channel. The surrogate design is illustrated to be not only accurate, but also robust for a range of practical values of channel background noise and various modulation orders. As a result the proposed codes show excellent performance over the Poisson channel with pulse position modulation outperforming competing schemes. As a side-product of this paper, finite-length benchmarks on the block error probability are provided, together with a union bound to characterize the code performance in the error floor region. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM), special form of multicarrier modulation, is the cornerstone of broad range of current standards. In addition, fifth-generation (5G) terrestrial wireless networks, advancing at accelerated speed, continue to use OFDM air interface. The first part of this paper endeavors to apply OFDM-like signaling for broadband satellite transmission in the forward direction, from gateway to terminals. Two layers of multicarrier operation are invoked. One allows multiple signals to share single on-board high-power amplifier. The other layer permits transmitted symbols from individual signals to modulate multiple narrowband OFDM subcarriers, followed by interpolating filters to suppress interference into adjacent signals and limit out-of-band emission to be compatible with satellite uplink. The second part of this paper proposes novel nonlinear compensation techniques, applied at the transmitter or receiver, and combination of both. Two performance assessments are provided: one exploiting information-theoretic framework using ideal channel coding; another based on total degradation using practical forward-error correction codes. We show that performance loss from nonlinear distortion can be significantly reduced when adopting the proposed correction methods. Furthermore, it is possible to use OFDM-like signaling over satellite, while being competitive, and in some cases surpassing, traditional systems with single-carrier modulation employing state-of-the-art enhanced receiver architecture. The error floor phenomenon in many low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes is caused by combinatorial objects in their Tanner graph, known as absorbing sets. In this paper, we highlight a threshold behavior for the min-sum decoding algorithm in the graph of an absorbing set with fixed-point representation of messages. For an absorbing set of interest in a binary LDPC code we can compute the threshold, a novel real-valued parameter that is closely related to its harmfulness. We show that absorbing sets with negative thresholds cannot trap the decoder if the dynamic range of the extrinsic messages is large enough. We also prove that, in regular LDPC codes, absorbing sets with negative thresholds exist if the variable node degree is odd. The examples presented in this paper show that odd-column-weight LDPC codes can have many absorbing sets with negative thresholds, but that these absorbing sets do not trap a well-designed decoder. A transmitter sends a packetized message over a fading channel using packet-level erasure coding and physical-layer channel coding of each resultant packet. Given an overall code rate, this paper finds the optimal rates of the erasure code and the channel code to minimize the transmit power required for a certain message error probability. This paper considers a practically important fading model in which the number of block fades in a transmitted channel codeword increases with the codeword length. Such a model applies, for example, in a time-varying channel with a fixed coherence time. The rate at which diversity grows with codeword length plays an important role in the optimization problem. If the diversity growth factor is large enough, then the erasure code plays a minor role, having an optimal rate that is essentially nondecreasing with decreasing overall rate. We prove analytically that, on a channel with linear growth in diversity, as overall rate decreases, the optimal erasure code rate eventually increases to its maximum possible value (e.g., a rate of 1 for an erasure code with no overhead). Additionally, we also consider the optimization problem of minimizing the message error probability given a transmit power. This paper considers the problem of analytically assessing the maximum achievable rates (capacity) of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmissions when the receiver, for complexity reasons, only accounts for the common phase error (CPE) effect due to phase noise impairments with inter-carrier interference (ICI) treated as noise. By recognizing that the functional form of the CPE with respect to the phase noise realization is actually a free design parameter, determination of the capacity is posed as a functional optimization problem with respect to the, so-called, CPE function. A simple lower bound of the capacity is obtained, revealing the performance degradation due to the unknown CPE at the receiver, as well as the suboptimal performance achieved in severe phase noise conditions by the conventional CPE function that is routinely employed in previous works. The existence of an optimal number of subcarriers that balances the effects of the (unknown) CPE and ICI is highlighted and critical system design/operation issues, such as selection of the CPE function and effect of unknown channel on the achievable rate, are discussed. The analysis in this paper can be employed for determining the suitability of OFDM in phase noise channels and provides a tractable utility function for resource allocation purposes. In this paper, a delay diversity orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (DD OFDM) transmission scheme in amplify-and-forward (AF) full-duplex relay systems is investigated. One direct source-to-destination link, one relay forwarding link, and residual self-interference are considered in the system. The necessary cyclic prefix length is investigated and a suitable AF relay protocol in the full-duplex relay OFDM system is proposed. This paper demonstrates that the AF relay link and the direct source-to-destination link can be combined to provide spatial diversity. The key is that the DD OFDM scheme is used to transform the spatial diversity into increased channel frequency diversity that is further exploited by using the bit-interleaved coding. This paper studies lossy transmission of a memoryless bivariate Gaussian source over a bandwidth-mismatched memoryless Gaussian broadcast channel with two receivers, where each receiver is interested in reconstructing only one source component. For both bandwidth expansion and compression regimes, novel hybrid digital/analog (HDA) coding schemes are proposed. With appropriate choice of parameters, our schemes are shown to specialize to separate source–channel coding studied by Gao and Tuncel, and is, therefore, superior to it in both bandwidth regimes. Our scheme for bandwidth expansion also outperforms the HDA coding scheme of Behroozi et al. On the other hand, if a proposed conjecture (supported by numerical observations) is indeed true, the same superiority follows for the bandwidth compression regime as well. Finally, when the bandwidth expansion/compression ratio approaches 1, both of our schemes become optimal as their performance approaches that of the bandwidth-matched scheme of Tian et al. In this paper, a simple energy-efficient physical layer modulation scheme termed as random number modulation (RNM) is proposed. It is a class of new systems that harness the randomness of pseudo random number generators (RNGs) for efficient communication, and adds a new degree of freedom to digital communication systems. It is also highly adaptable to high-rate, low-latency, and low-rate, high-energy efficiency scenarios. This paper includes a detailed system model, preliminary performance analysis, and extended discussions. The performance of the proposed system is analyzed in terms of symbol and block error probabilities, energy efficiency, and latency. It is shown that there is a fundamental tradeoff between the energy efficiency and the latency of the proposed system, and they can be easily software programmable allowing devices to adapt to different circumstances and environments rapidly. Based on the efficient generalized water-filling with group peak power constraints (GWFGP), this paper proposes an iterative algorithm to compute the optimal solutions to system throughput (sum-rate) maximization problems. This class of problems is equipped with the multiuser multiple input multiple output multiple access channels (MU-MIMO MAC) in the general communication systems. The proposed iterative GWFGP algorithm (IGWFGP) has two levels of loops. The inner loop aims at computing the solution to each member in the family, while the outer loop aims at computing the solution to the target problem based on the results obtained by the inner loop. Both GWFGP and the convergence theory of an algorithm are used in the inner loop and the outer loop respectively. Furthermore, by exploiting the concept of variable weighting factor for covariance update, IGWFGP owns fast convergence and provides optimal solutions to the sum rate maximization problems. The usage of the convergence theory in IGWFGP and the algorithm of GWFGP are efficient and novel. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no prior algorithm has been reported in the open literature to solve the targeted problem in this paper. In addition, the proposed algorithm does not require to choose the initial value for computation. Linear coding schemes have been the main choice of coding for the additive white Gaussian noise broadcast channel (AWGN-BC) with noiseless feedback in the literature. The achievable rate regions of these schemes go well beyond the capacity region of the AWGN-BC without feedback. In this paper, a concatenated coding design for the $K$-user AWGN-BC with noisy feedback is proposed that relies on linear schemes as inner codes to achieve rate tuples outside the no-feedback capacity region. The boundary of an achievable rate region of purely linear coding schemes for noiseless feedback is shown to be arbitrarily closely approached by the concatenated coding scheme for sufficiently small feedback noise levels. Then, a linear coding scheme for the $K$-user symmetric AWGN-BC with noisy feedback is presented and optimized for use in the concatenated coding scheme. For noiseless feedback, the presented linear coding scheme achieves the optimal sum-rate of linear-feedback coding. Geographic routing protocols greatly reduce the requirements of topology storage and provide flexibility in the accommodation of the dynamic behavior of mobile ad hoc networks. This paper presents performance evaluations and comparisons of two geographic routing protocols and the popular AODV protocol. The tradeoffs among the average path reliabilities, average conditional delays, average conditional numbers of hops, and area spectral efficiencies and the effects of various parameters are illustrated for finite ad hoc networks with randomly placed mobiles. This paper uses a dual method of closed-form analysis and simple simulation that is applicable to most routing protocols and provides a much more realistic performance evaluation than has previously been possible. In a diffusion-based molecular communication network, transmitters and receivers communicate by using signalling molecules (or ligands) in a fluid medium. This paper assumes that the transmitter uses different chemical reactions to generate different emission patterns of signalling molecules to represent different transmission symbols, and the receiver consists of receptors. When the signalling molecules arrive at the receiver, they may react with the receptors to form ligand-receptor complexes. Our goal is to study the demodulation in this setup assuming that the transmitter and receiver are synchronised. We derive an optimal demodulator using the continuous history of the number of complexes at the receiver as the input to the demodulator. We do that by first deriving a communication model which includes the chemical reactions in the transmitter, diffusion in the transmission medium and the ligand-receptor process in the receiver. This model, which takes the form of a continuous-time Markov process, captures the noise in the receiver signal due to the stochastic nature of chemical reactions and diffusion. We then adopt a maximum a posteriori framework and use Bayesian filtering to derive the optimal demodulator. We use numerical examples to illustrate the properties of this optimal demodulator. This paper studies a multiple-input–single-output (MISO) broadcast channel (BC) featuring simultaneous wireless information and power transfer, where a multiantenna access point (AP) delivers both information and energy via radio signals to multiple single-antenna receivers simultaneously, and each receiver implements either information decoding (ID) or energy harvesting (EH). In particular, pseudorandom sequences that are a priori known and therefore can be cancelled at each ID receiver are used as the energy signals, and the information-theoretically optimal dirty paper coding is employed for the information transmission. We characterize the capacity region for ID receivers by solving a sequence of weighted sum-rate (WSR) maximization (WSRMax) problems subject to a maximum sum-power constraint for the AP, and a set of minimum harvested power constraints for individual EH receivers. The problem corresponds to a new form of WSRMax problem in MISO-BC with combined maximum and minimum linear transmit covariance constraints (MaxLTCCs and MinLTCCs), which differs from the celebrated capacity region characterization problem for MISO-BC under a set of MaxLTCCs only and is challenging to solve. By extending the general BC–multiple-access-channel duality, which is only applicable to WSRMax problems with MaxLTCCs, and applying the ellipsoid method, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm to solve this problem globally optimally. Furthermore, we also propose two suboptimal algorithms with lower complexity by assuming that the information and energy signals are designed separately. The millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequency band is seen as a key enabler of multigigabit wireless access in future cellular networks. In order to overcome the propagation challenges, mmWave systems use a large number of antenna elements both at the base station and at the user equipment, which leads to high directivity gains, fully directional communications, and possible noise-limited operations. The fundamental differences between mmWave networks and traditional ones challenge the classical design constraints, objectives, and available degrees of freedom. This paper addresses the implications that highly directional communication has on the design of an efficient medium access control (MAC) layer. The paper discusses key MAC layer issues, such as synchronization, random access, handover, channelization, interference management, scheduling, and association. This paper provides an integrated view on MAC layer issues for cellular networks, identifies new challenges and tradeoffs, and provides novel insights and solution approaches. A primary source of increased read time on nand flash comes from the fact that, in the presence of noise, the flash medium must be read several times using different read threshold voltages for the decoder to succeed. This paper proposes an algorithm that uses a limited number of rereads to characterize the noise distribution and recover the stored information. Both hard and soft decoding are considered. For hard decoding, this paper attempts to find a read threshold minimizing bit error rate (BER) and derives an expression for the resulting codeword error rate. For soft decoding, it shows that minimizing BER and minimizing codeword error rate are competing objectives in the presence of a limited number of allowed rereads, and proposes a tradeoff between the two. The proposed method does not require any prior knowledge about the noise distribution but can take advantage of such information when it is available. Each read threshold is chosen based on the results of previous reads, following an optimal policy derived through a dynamic programming backward recursion. The method and results are studied from the perspective of an SLC Flash memory with Gaussian noise, but this paper explains how the method could be extended to other scenarios. Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication plays a pivotal role in intelligent transport systems (ITS) with cellular-vehicle to everything (C-V2X) and IEEE 802.11p being the two competing enabling technologies. This paper presents multi-dimensional discrete-time Markov chain (DTMC) based models to study the medium access control (MAC) layer performance of the IEEE 802.11p standard and C-V2X Mode 4, considering periodic cooperative awareness messages (CAMs) and event-driven decentralized environmental notification messages (DENMs). Closed-form solutions for the steady-state probabilities of the models are obtained, which are then utilized to derive expressions for several key performance metrics. Numerical results are provided to draw insights on the performance. In particular, a performance comparison between IEEE 802.11p and C-V2X Mode 4 in terms of the average delay, the collision probability, and the channel utilization is presented. The results show that IEEE 802.11p is superior in terms of average delay, whereas C-V2X Mode 4 excels in collision resolution. Although 5G networks have enabled mobile users to get a better experience, task scheduling remains challenging for massive Internet of Things (IoT) devices in remote areas. This paper investigates the task scheduling problem for delay-aware IoT applications in civil aircraft-augmented space-air-ground integrated networks (CAA-SAGIN), where the normalized sky access platforms (SAPs) can collect and forward the terrestrial tasks. Specifically, we first propose an access control scheme for a non-preemptive priority queuing system and a transmission control scheme with cross-layer optimization. Secondly, considering the uncertain distribution of the transmission numbers and generated data, we formulate a robust two-stage stochastic optimization problem of delay minimization. With the proposed robust task scheduling with risk aversion (RTS-RA) algorithm, the original problem can be decomposed into two subproblems, which can be further transformed into tractable semi-definite program (SDP) problems respectively. Simulation results show that the cross-layer optimization scheme can achieve a good tradeoff between delay and throughput. Also, the RTS-RA algorithm outperforms the exiting offloading schemes in terms of end-to-end delay, transmitted data, and energy consumption with lower computational complexity. This paper proposes an effective and novel multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL)-based method for solving the joint virtual network function (VNF) placement and routing (P&R), where multiple service requests with differentiated demands are delivered at the same time. The differentiated demands of the service requests are reflected by their delay- and cost-sensitive factors. We first construct a VNF P&R problem to jointly minimize a weighted sum of service delay and resource consumption cost, which is NP-complete. Then, the joint VNF P&R problem is decoupled into two iterative subtasks: placement subtask and routing subtask. Each subtask consists of multiple concurrent parallel sequential decision processes. By invoking the deep deterministic policy gradient method and multi-agent technique, an MADRL-P&R framework is designed to perform the two subtasks. The new joint reward and internal rewards mechanism is proposed to match the goals and constraints of the placement and routing subtasks. We also propose the parameter migration-based model-retraining method to deal with changing network topologies. Corroborated by experiments, the proposed MADRL-P&R framework is superior to its alternatives in terms of service cost and delay, and offers higher flexibility for personalized service demands. In this paper, the role of feedback in two-way full-duplex Gaussian channel (TW-FD-GC) is revisited. First, we propose a practical coding scheme for the TW-FD-GC, which is based on the noisy type of the well-known Schalkwijk-Kailath (SK) feedback scheme. We show that though this scheme cannot achieve the capacity of the TW-FD-GC, the codeword length that achieves desired decoding error probability is extremely short. Then, we further prove that the proposed scheme is secure by itself, i.e., the achievable rate region of the proposed scheme is also an achievable secrecy rate region of the two-way full-duplex Gaussian wiretap channel (TW-FD-GWTC). In addition, for the TW-FD-GWTC, numerical result shows that the secrecy sum rate of our proposed scheme can be as large as those achieved by existing schemes in the literature for some cases. Next, we extend the proposed scheme to the TW-FD-GC with Gaussian state interference non-causally known by the corresponding transmitter. We show that the interference can be perfectly canceled by this extended scheme. Finally, we prove that this extended scheme is also secure by itself, and numerical result shows that this extended scheme may perform better than the existing ones in the literature. Multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM), a fundamental transmission scheme, promises high throughput and robustness against multipath fading. However, these benefits rely on the efficient detection strategy at the receiver and come at the expense of the extra bandwidth consumed by the cyclic prefix (CP). We use the iterative orthogonal approximate message passing (OAMP) algorithm in this paper as the prototype of the detector because of its remarkable potential for interference suppression. However, OAMP is computationally expensive for the matrix inversion per iteration. We replace the matrix inversion with the conjugate gradient (CG) method to reduce the complexity of OAMP. We further unfold the CG-based OAMP algorithm into a network and tune the critical parameters through deep learning (DL) to enhance detection performance. Simulation results and complexity analysis show that the proposed scheme has significant gain over other iterative detection methods and exhibits comparable performance to the state-of-the-art DL-based detector at a reduced computational cost. Furthermore, we design a highly efficient CP-free MIMO-OFDM receiver architecture to remove the CP overhead. This architecture first eliminates the intersymbol interference by buffering the previously recovered data and then detects the signal using the proposed detector. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the designed receiver offers a higher spectral efficiency than traditional receivers. Over the past few years, the use of wireless sensor networks in a range of Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios has grown in popularity. Since IoT sensor devices have restricted battery power, a proper IoT data aggregation approach is crucial to prolong the network lifetime. To this end, current approaches typically form a virtual aggregation backbone based on a connected dominating set or maximal independent set to utilize independent transmissions of dominators. However, they usually have a fairly long aggregation delay because the dominators become bottlenecks for receiving data from all dominatees. The problem of time-efficient data aggregation in multichannel duty-cycled IoT sensor networks is analyzed in this paper. We propose a novel aggregation approach, named LInk-delay-aware REinforcement (LIRE), leveraging active slots of sensors to explore a routing structure with pipeline links, then scheduling all transmissions in a bottom-up manner. The reinforcement schedule accelerates the aggregation by exploiting unused channels and time slots left off at every scheduling round. LIRE is evaluated in a variety of simulation scenarios through theoretical analysis and performance comparisons with a state-of-the-art scheme. Faster-than-Nyquist signaling (FTNS) has already been shown to increase the communication capacity on certain channels such as additive white Gaussian noise and block flat multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Rayleigh fading channels. The following issues, however, remain unresolved: 1) whether FTNS enables a capacity increase in generalized MIMO Rayleigh fading channels that are selective in time, frequency, and space; and 2) how channel selectivities affect the capacity and if present, the FTN capacity gain. To address the issues, this paper firstly investigates the ergodic capacity of MIMO-FTN transmission over triply-selective fading channels. We derive a low-complexity approximate capacity formula and also show how it degenerates in other channel models, such as doubly-selective single-input single-output fading channels, which can be considered as the special cases of triply-selective fading channels. The capacity evaluation results obtained under different channel conditions show that: 1) MIMO-FTN outperforms MIMO-Nyquist in terms of capacity; 2) the FTN gains are nearly consistent, while the FTN gains obtained in the frequency-selective fading channels are slightly higher than those obtained in the flat fading channels. In this paper, a multi-vehicle multi-task non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) assisted mobile edge computing (MEC) system with passive eavesdropping vehicles is investigated. To heighten the performances of edge vehicles, we propose a vehicle grouping pairing method, which utilizes vehicles near the MEC to assist edge vehicles as full-duplex relays. For promoting transmission security, we employ artificial noise to interrupt eavesdropping vehicles. Furthermore, we derive the approximate expression of the secrecy outage probability of the system. The combined optimization of vehicle task division, power allocation, and transmit beamforming is formulated to minimize the total delay of task completion for edge vehicles. Then, we design a power allocation and task scheduling algorithm based on the genetic algorithm to solve the mixed-integer non-linear programming problem. Plane spiral orbital angular momentum (PSOAM) mode-groups (MGs) and multiple-input multiple-output non-orthogonal multiple access (MIMO-NOMA) serve as two emerging techniques for achieving high spectral efficiency (SE) in the next-generation networks. In this paper, a PSOAM MGs based multi-user MIMO-NOMA system is studied, where the base station transmits data to users by utilizing the generated PSOAM beams. For such scenario, the interference between users in different PSOAM mode groups can be avoided, which leads to a significant performance enhancement. We aim to maximize the energy efficiency (EE) of the system subject to the constraints of the total transmission power and the minimum data rate. This designed optimization problem is non-convex owing to the interference among users, and hence is quite difficult to tackle directly. To solve this issue, we develop a dual layer resource allocation algorithm where the bisection method is exploited in the outer layer to obtain the optimal EE and a resource distributed iterative algorithm is exploited in the inner layer to optimize the transmit power. Besides, an alternative resource allocation algorithm with Deep Belief Networks (DBN) is proposed to cope with the requirement for low computational complexity. Simulation results verify the theoretical findings and demonstrate the proposed algorithms on the PSOAM MGs based MIMO-NOMA system can obtain a better performance comparing to the conventional MIMO-NOMA system in terms of EE. Wireless communications are vulnerable to cyber attackers, which now have the flexibility to choose their type of attack. In this paper, combined with intelligent reflect surface (IRS), we jointly optimize base station beamforming and IRS reflected beamforming to counter smart attackers, thereby improving system security. Considering that attackers can flexibly choose their attack methods, such as jamming or eavesdropping, we make the base station intelligent by using reinforcement learning, which can predict the attack methods of attackers and choose whether to add artificial noise into the transmitted signals. At the same time, the interaction between the base station and the smart attackers are established as a non-cooperative game, the Nash equilibrium of the game is derived. Based on this, the base station anti-smart attackers strategy based on Deep Q-learning (DQN) is proposed, which can restrain the attack of the attacker to improve the security of the system. It can be verified from the simulation results that the proposed anti-smart attackers strategy can effectively enhance the secrecy rate of the wireless communication system, resist the attacker’s attack, and intelligently transmit artificial noise to improve system security. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has emerged as a promising technique to enhance wireless communication performance cost-effectively. The existing literature has mainly considered IRS being deployed near user terminals to improve their performance. However, this approach may incur a high cost if IRSs need to be densely deployed in the network to cater to random user locations. To avoid such high deployment cost, in this paper we consider a new IRS aided wireless network architecture, where IRSs are deployed in the vicinity of each base station (BS) to assist in its communications with distributed users regardless of their locations. Besides significantly enhancing IRSs’ signal coverage, this scheme helps reduce the IRS-associated channel estimation overhead as compared to conventional user-side IRSs, by exploiting the nearly static BS-IRS channels over short distance. For this scheme, we propose a new two-stage transmission protocol to achieve IRS channel estimation and reflection optimization for uplink data transmission efficiently. In addition, we propose effective methods for solving the user-IRS association problem based on long-term/statistical channel knowledge and the selected user-IRS-BS cascaded channel estimation problem. Finally, all IRSs’ passive reflections are jointly optimized with the BS’s multi-antenna receive combining to maximize the minimum achievable rate among all users for data transmission. Numerical results show that the proposed co-site-IRS empowered BS scheme can achieve significant performance gains over the conventional BS without co-site IRS and existing schemes for IRS channel estimation and reflection optimization, thus enabling an appealing low-cost and high-performance BS design for future wireless networks. In this paper, we consider a mobile molecular communication (MC) system consisting of two mobile nanomachines, a transmitter and a receiver, propelled by a positive drift velocity and Brownian motion in a realistic blood-vessel-type flow regime. Considering the nonlinear movement of the nanomachines, an extended Kalman filter is employed to estimate the distance from the transmitter. Furthermore, based on the predicted distance, to keep the number of received molecules for bit 1 at a stable level, we employ power control on the number of transmitted molecules based on the distance between the transmitter and the receiver and the residual molecules in the channel from the previous transmission. Finally, the optimal detection threshold is obtained by minimizing the error probability. It is verified that a fixed optimal detection threshold can be effective for the power control scheme in the mobile MC. The increasing demands of power supply and data rate for mobile devices promote the research of simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). Optical SWIPT, as known as simultaneous light information and power transfer (SLIPT), has the potential for providing high-capacity communication and high-power wireless charging. However, SLIPT technologies based on light-emitting diodes have low efficiency due to energy dissipation over the air. Laser-based SLIPT technologies need strict positioning accuracy and scanning resolution, which may lead to the increase of costs and complexity. In this paper, we propose a mobile SLIPT scheme based on spatially separated laser resonator (SSLR) and intra-cavity second harmonic generation. The power and data are transferred via separated frequencies, while they share the same self-aligned resonant beam path, without the needs of receiver positioning and beam steering. We establish the analysis model of the resonant beam power and its second harmonic power. Numerical results show that the proposed system can achieve watt-level battery charging power and above 10-bit/s/Hz achievable rate at 6-m distance, which satisfies the requirements of most indoor mobile devices. In this paper, we propose a precoded faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling technique for time-domain single-carrier index-modulated symbol transmission. More precisely, eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) precoding is adopted for the FTN transmission of data bits modulated by single-carrier time-domain index modulation (IM). While the FTN scheme increases the spectral efficiency and data rate by increasing the density of transmit symbols, the time-domain IM works towards the same objective while maintaining symbol sparsity. We analytically derive the constrained capacity of the proposed system. Our simulation results show that the proposed scheme has better bit error ratio (BER) performance than the conventional FTN-IM scheme, particularly for the scenario of a higher packing ratio. With the proposed scheme, a 2.5 dB performance gain is observed at the BER of 10−4, where the packing ratio is 0.7 and the roll-off factor is 0.5 in the channel-uncoded scenario. We further analyze our scheme’s performance by characterizing its minimum Euclidean distance and inter-symbol interference. Furthermore, we present a three-stage serially concatenated iterative detection architecture for the proposed EVD-FTN-IM signaling scheme. In this paper, we present a class of hybrid coupled serially concatenated codes (HC-SCC), in which coupling is achieved by re-encoding partial outputs from both the outer and the inner encoders. Firstly, we derive the exact density evolution (DE) equations over the binary erasure channels (BECs) for the HC-SCCs, which can be used to analyze the impact of the coupling ratios and the coupling memories on the performances of the HC-SCCs. Secondly, we present a genie-aided lower bound for the proposed HC-SCCs to estimate their error-floors. Thirdly, we use the DE equations to design randomly punctured HC-SCCs, including rate-compatible HC-SCCs. The analytical and the numerical results show that: 1) for comparable coupling memories, the iterative decoding thresholds of the proposed HC-SCC ensembles are better than those of the recently introduced spatially coupled serially concatenated code (SC-SCC) ensembles and the partially parity-coupled turbo code (PPC-TC) ensembles; 2) with outer coupling memory five and inner coupling memory five, the iterative decoding thresholds of the rate-compatible HC-SCCs over the BECs are 0.0003 away from the corresponding channel capacities for a wide range of coding rates; 3) simulation results over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels and the BECs are provided to confirm the performance advantages of the HC-SCCs. Particularly, the simulation results show that the HC-SCCs admit lower error-floor than the SC-SCCs and the rate-compatible HC-SCCs perform better than the PPC-TCs, which are consistent with the results of DE analysis. Mobile services are becoming more diverse, making them have different demands on communications, computing, and caching (3C) resources in mobile systems. Unlike the traditional work that considers only one type of service, this paper designs a unified framework to characterize the different kinds of services, and jointly optimizes the 3C resources of the base station (BS) and mobile devices to provide differentiated quality of service (QoS) for diverse services. In the proposed framework, we model the task required by the mobile device to be generated at the BS, the mobile device, or both of them, which means the requested tasks are served through different paths, consuming different bandwidth, computing and caching resources. Since diverse services have different QoS, we formulate a multi-objective programming (MOP) to optimize the allocation of the 3C resources for minimizing the total delay while maximizing the number of executed tasks requested by the mobile devices. We transform the MOP problem as a multi-objective Markov decision process (MO-MDP) and design a multi-objective proximal policy optimization (MO-PPO) algorithm to solve the MO-MDP. The proposed MO-PPO first trains two sub-policies separately for the two objectives, and then combines them to search for Pareto dominating solutions. By alternately perform the separate training and the combination, we can finally obtain a set of Pareto optimal solutions and the corresponding Pareto front. Simulation results show that the proposed MO-PPO outperforms traditional methods in finding a higher-quality set of Pareto optimal solutions and can more appropriately allocate 3C resources to different types of services. Symbol-level precoding (SLP), which converts the harmful multi-user interference (MUI) into beneficial signals, can significantly improve symbol-error-rate (SER) performance in multi-user communication systems. While enjoying symbolic gain, however, the complicated non-linear symbol-by-symbol precoder design suffers high computational complexity exponential with the number of users, which is unaffordable in realistic systems. In this paper, we propose a novel low-complexity grouped SLP (G-SLP) approach and develop efficient design algorithms for typical max-min fairness and power minimization problems. In particular, after dividing all users into several groups, the precoders for each group are separately designed on a symbol-by-symbol basis by only utilizing the symbol information of the users in that group, in which the intra-group MUI is exploited using the concept of constructive interference (CI) and the inter-group MUI is also effectively suppressed. In order to further reduce the computational complexity, we utilize the Lagrangian dual, Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions and the majorization-minimization (MM) method to transform the resulting problems into more tractable forms, and develop efficient algorithms for obtaining closed-form solutions to them. Extensive simulation results illustrate that the proposed G-SLP strategy and design algorithms dramatically reduce the computational complexity without causing significant performance loss compared with the traditional SLP schemes. In this paper, we consider an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted cognitive radio system and maximize the secondary user (SU) rate by jointly optimizing the transmit power of secondary transmitter (ST) and the IRS’s reflect beamforming, subject to the constraints of the minimum required signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio at the primary receiver, the ST’s maximum transmit power, and the unit modulus of the IRS reflect beamforming vector. This joint optimization problem can be solved suboptimally by the non-convex optimization techniques, which however usually require complicated mathematical transformations and are computationally intensive. To address this challenge, we propose an algorithm based on the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) method. To achieve a higher learning efficiency and a lower reward variance, we propose another algorithm based on the soft actor-critic (SAC) method. In these proposed algorithms, a reward impact adjustment approach is proposed to improve their learning efficiency and stability. Simulation results show that the two proposed algorithms can achieve comparable SU rate performance with much shorter running time, as compared to the existing non-convex optimization-based benchmark algorithm, and that the proposed SAC-based algorithm learns faster and achieves a higher average reward with lower variance, as compared to the proposed DDPG-based algorithm. Terahertz (THz) band communications are envisioned as a key technology for 6G and Beyond. As a fundamental wireless infrastructure, THz communication can boost abundant promising applications. In 2014, our team published two comprehensive roadmaps for the development and progress of THz communication networks, which helped the research community to start research on this subject afterwards. The topic of THz communications became very important and appealing to the research community due to 6G wireless systems design and development in recent years. Many papers are getting published covering different aspects of wireless systems using the THz band. With this paper, our aim is looking back to the last decade and revisiting the old problems and pointing out what has been achieved in the research community so far. Furthermore, in this paper, open challenges and new research directions still to be investigated for the THz band communication systems are presented, by covering diverse topics ranging from devices, channel behavior, communication and networking, to physical testbeds and demonstration systems. To realize high energy-efficient, high spectrum-efficient, and high-throughput data transmission, a multi-carrier differential chaos shift keying communication system with hybrid index modulation, referred to as HIM-MC-DCSK system, is proposed in this paper. In the HIM-MC-DCSK system, we intelligently integrate the carrier-number-index technique and carrier-index technique into the MC-DCSK modulation in order to significantly boost the transmission efficiency in wireless communication systems. Especially, we use a pair of orthogonal signals to represent the active and inactive subcarriers in the HIM-MC-DCSK system so as to exploit all the subcarriers to transmit information bits. In addition, the theoretical bit-error-rate (BER) expressions of the HIM-MC-DCSK system are derived over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and multipath Rayleigh fading channels. Also, the data rate, spectrum efficiency, energy efficiency, and complexity of the proposed system are carefully analyzed. Millimeter wave (mmWave) and massive MIMO systems are intrinsic components of 5G and beyond. These systems rely on using beamforming codebooks for both initial access and data transmission. Current beam codebooks, however, generally consist of a large number of narrow beams that scan all possible directions, leading to large training overhead. Further, these codebooks do not normally account for hardware impairments or possible non-uniform array geometries, and their calibration process is expensive. To overcome these limitations, this paper develops an efficient online machine learning framework that learns how to adapt the codebook beam patterns to the specific deployment, surrounding environment, user distribution, and hardware characteristics. This is done by designing a novel complex-valued neural network architecture in which the neuron weights directly model the beamforming weights of the analog phase shifters, accounting for the key hardware constraints. This model learns the codebook beams through online and self-supervised training avoiding the need for explicit channel state information. This respects the practical situations where the channel is imperfect or hard to obtain. Simulation results highlight the capability of the proposed solution in learning environment and hardware aware beam codebooks, which reduce the training overhead and improve the robustness against possible hardware impairments.
