The problem of communicating over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with lattice codes is addressed in this paper. Theoretically, Voronoi constellations have proved to yield very powerful lattice codes when the fine/coding lattice is AWGN-good and the coarse/shaping lattice has an optimal shaping gain. However, achieving Shannon capacity with these premises and practically implementable encoding algorithms is in general not an easy task. In this paper, a new way to encode and demap Construction-A Voronoi lattice codes is presented. As a meaningful application of this scheme, the second part of the paper is focused on Leech constellations of low-density Construction-A (LDA) lattices: LDA Voronoi lattice codes are presented whose numerically measured waterfall region is situated at less than 0.8 dB from Shannon capacity. These LDA lattice codes are based on dual-diagonal nonbinary low-density parity-check codes. Visible light communication (VLC) is one of the main technologies driving the future 5G communication systems due to its ability to support high data rates with low power consumption, thereby facilitating high speed green communications. To further increase the capacity of VLC systems, a technique called non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been suggested to cater to increasing demand for bandwidth, whereby users’ signals are superimposed prior to transmission and detected at each user equipment using successive interference cancellation. Some recent results on NOMA exist which greatly enhance the achievable capacity as compared with the orthogonal multiple access techniques. However, one of the performance-limiting factors affecting VLC systems is the nonlinear characteristics of a light emitting diode (LED). This paper considers the nonlinear LED characteristics in the design of pre-distorter for cognitive radio inspired NOMA in VLC, and proposes singular value decomposition-based Chebyshev precoding to improve performance of nonlinear multiple-input multiple-output NOMA-VLC. A novel and generalized power allocation strategy is also derived in this paper, which is valid even in scenarios when users experience similar channels. This paper proposes a new paradigm for spectrum sharing between cellular wireless communications (CWC) and radio astronomy systems (RAS). In contrast to the existing paradigm of geographical and spectral isolation between CWC and RAS, this paper develops a three phase spectrum access, which enables geographical and spectral coexistence between CWC and RAS. Shared spectrum access zone (SSAZ) is created around the RAS site and CWC cells within the SSAZ follow the three phase spectrum access scheme while those outside the SSAZ have full spectrum access. In addition, system characteristics-based improved spectrum sharing is developed. Furthermore, a built-in fine tuning mechanism is presented for addressing mismatches between design and practical environments as well as for facilitating service evolutions. Performance evaluation results demonstrate that the proposed paradigm offers 1) certain guaranteed spectrum access to RAS, which is impossible in the existing paradigm, 2) capability to handle higher peak and mean traffics to CWC under spectrum restructuring of both CWC and RAS bands, and 3) overall improved spectrum utilization. As real-time applications typically require short length code words, this paper analyzes the minimum achievable code word error rate of the given finite-length code words, namely, maximum likelihood (ML) decoding error probability. For coding schemes ML decoding is too complex, the key contribution of this paper is to analytically assess the performance gap between ML decoding and a practical decoding scheme. We analyze the combination of turbo codes and bit-interleaved coded-modulation that is a spectrally efficient coding scheme adopted in 3GPP long term evolution (LTE). In single-input single-output (SISO) systems, it was shown in the literature that turbo decoding delivers near-ML decoding performance. In this paper, we extend the analysis to a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system. In contrast to the SISO case, the turbo principle-based iterative decoding scheme is subject to appreciable performance loss compared with the ML decoding, even in good MIMO channel conditions. For this reason, we further analyze potential reasons and examine possible improvements. By means of simulation, it is shown that convergence to a non-ML code word rather than non-convergence is the key reason for the observed performance loss in good channel conditions. A novel approach is here presented to superimpose a low-priority data stream on a high-priority data stream for OFDM systems. The main improvement with respect to conventional hierarchical modulation, which is included with the same purpose in various wireless technologies, is that the low-priority data stream can be decoded from the received subcarrier symbols without any previous equalization for multipath fading channels. As a consequence, the expected performance is nearly invariant of the channel estimation method used to equalize the channel. The low-priority stream is inserted adopting a gain-invariant dirty paper coding based on Rational Dither Modulation, which was proposed for data hiding applications. In this paper an analysis of the developed system is presented and several simulations have been carried out using DVB-T system parameters to verify the validity of the proposed approach. The experimental results show the better performance of the proposed method with respect to that of a conventional hierarchical modulation, particularly when the accuracy of the estimated channel response decreases. We consider practical schemes for binary dirty-paper channels and broadcast channels (BCs) with two receivers and varying channel quality. With the BC application in mind, this paper proposes a new design for binary dirty paper coding (DPC). By exploiting the concept of coset binning, the complexity of the system is greatly reduced when compared to the existing works. Some design challenges of the coset binning approach are identified and addressed. The proposed binary DPC system achieves similar performance to the state-of-the-art, superposition-coding-based system while demonstrating significant advantages in terms of complexity and flexibility of system design. For binary BCs, achieving the capacity generally requires the superposition of a normal channel code and a carefully designed channel code with non-uniform bit distribution. The non-uniform bit distribution is chosen according to the channel conditions. Therefore, to achieve the capacity for binary BCs with varying channel quality, it is necessary to use quantization codes of different rates, which significantly increases the implementation complexity. In this paper, we also propose a broadcast scheme that generalizes the concept of binary DPC, which we term soft DPC. By combining soft DPC with time sharing, we achieve a large percentage of the capacity for a wide range of channel quality with little complexity overhead. Our scheme uses only one fixed pair of codes for users 1 and 2, and a single quantization code, which possesses many practical advantages over traditional time sharing and superposition coding solutions and provides strictly better performance. This paper focuses on channel prediction techniques for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Previous channel predictors are based on theoretical channel models, which would be deviated from realistic channels. In this paper, we develop and compare a vector Kalman filter (VKF)-based channel predictor and a machine learning (ML)-based channel predictor using the realistic channels from the spatial channel model (SCM), which has been adopted in the 3GPP standard for years. First, we propose a low-complexity mobility estimator based on the spatial average using a large number of antennas in massive MIMO. The mobility estimate can be used to determine the complexity order of developed predictors. The VKF-based channel predictor developed in this paper exploits the autoregressive (AR) parameters estimated from the SCM channels based on the Yule-Walker equations. Then, the ML-based channel predictor using the linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE)-based noise pre-processed data is developed. Numerical results reveal that both channel predictors have substantial gain over the outdated channel in terms of the channel prediction accuracy and data rate. The ML-based predictor has larger overall computational complexity than the VKF-based predictor, but once trained, the operational complexity of ML-based predictor becomes smaller than that of VKF-based predictor. Optimal data detection of data transmitted over a linear channel can always be implemented through the Viterbi algorithm (VA). However, in many cases of interest the memory of the channel prohibits direct application of the VA. A popular and conceptually simple method in this case, studied since the early 1970s, is to first filter the received signal in order to shorten the memory of the channel, and then to apply a VA that operates with the shorter memory. We shall refer to this general concept as a channel shortening (CS) receiver. Although studied for almost four decades, an information theoretic understanding of what such a simple receiver solution is actually doing is not available. In this paper, we show that an optimized CS receiver has a direct correspondance to the chain rule of mutual information. Furthermore, we show that the tools for analyzing the ensuing achievable rates from an optimized CS receiver are precisely the same as those used for analyzing the achievable rates of a minimum mean-square-error (MMSE) receiver. Minimizing the symbol error in the uplink of multi-user multiple input multiple output systems is important, because the symbol error affects the achieved signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and thereby the spectral efficiency of the system. Despite the vast literature available on minimum mean squared error (MMSE) receivers, previously proposed receivers for block fading channels do not minimize the symbol error in time-varying Rayleigh fading channels. Specifically, we show that the true MMSE receiver structure does not only depend on the statistics of the CSI error, but also on the autocorrelation coefficient of the time-variant channel. It turns out that calculating the average SINR when using the proposed receiver is highly non-trivial. In this paper, we employ a random matrix theoretical approach, which allows us to derive a quasi-closed form for the average SINR, which allows to obtain analytical exact results that give valuable insights into how the SINR depends on the number of antennas, employed pilot and data power and the covariance of the time-varying channel. We benchmark the performance of the proposed receiver against recently proposed receivers and find that the proposed MMSE receiver achieves higher SINR than the previously proposed ones, and this benefit increases with increasing autoregressive coefficient. Many applications of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) require deploying sensors in hostile environments, where an adversary may eavesdrop communications. To secure communications in WSNs, the $q$ -composite key predistribution scheme has been proposed in the literature. In this paper, we investigate secure $k$ -connectivity in WSNs operating under the $q$ -composite scheme, in consideration of the unreliability of wireless links. Secure $k$ -connectivity ensures that any two sensors can find a path in between for secure communication, even when $k-1$ sensors fail. We present conditions on how to set the network parameters such that the network has secure $k$ -connectivity asymptotically almost surely. The result is given in the form of a sharp zero–one law. Supporting parallel multi-priority data streams is vital for maintaining the quality of service (QoS) in vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication. Hence, the European telecommunications standard institute (ETSI) has defined four packet types, with varying priority levels, to be used as broadcast packets in such communication. This paper studies the medium access control (MAC) layer performance of IEEE 802.11p and cellular-V2X (C-V2X) Mode 4 using discrete-time Markov chain (DTMC) based models, while considering parallel multi-priority data streams. The overall model consists of four queue models with their respective traffic generators, which are appropriately linked with the DTMCs modeling the MAC layer operations of IEEE 802.11p and C-V2X Mode 4. Closed-form solutions for the steady-state probabilities of the models are obtained, which are then utilized to derive expressions for key performance indicators at the MAC layer. Numerical results are provided to draw insights on the MAC layer performance of the two technologies. IEEE 802.11p is comparatively superior in average delay, and at maintaining fairness among multi-priority data streams, whereas C-V2X Mode 4 exhibits better collision resolution, which leads to its higher throughput. This paper studies the minimum-age scheduling problem in a wireless sensor network where an access point (AP) monitors the state of an object via a set of sensors. The freshness of the sensed state, measured by the age-of-information (AoI), varies at different sensors and is not directly observable to the AP. The AP has to decide which sensor to query/sample in order to get the most updated state information of the object (i.e., the state information with the minimum AoI). In this paper, we formulate the minimum-age scheduling problem as a multi-armed bandit problem with partially observable arms and explore the greedy policy to minimize the expected AoI sampled over an infinite horizon. To analyze the performance of the greedy policy, we 1) put forth a relaxed greedy policy that decouples the sampling processes of the arms, 2) formulate the sampling process of each arm as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP), and 3) derive the average sampled AoI under the relaxed greedy policy as a sum of the average AoI sampled from individual arms. Numerical and simulation results validate that the relaxed greedy policy is an excellent approximation to the greedy policy in terms of the expected AoI sampled over an infinite horizon. Cell-free massive MIMO is one of the key technologies for future wireless communications, in which users are simultaneously and jointly served by all access points (APs). In this paper, we investigate the minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimation of effective channel coefficients in cell-free massive MIMO systems with massive connectivity. To facilitate the theoretical analysis, only single measurement vector (SMV) based MMSE estimation is considered in this paper, i.e., the MMSE estimation is performed based on the received pilot signals at each AP separately. Inspired by the decoupling principle of replica symmetric postulated MMSE estimation of sparse signal vectors with independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) non-zero components, we develop the corresponding decoupling principle for the SMV based MMSE estimation of sparse signal vectors with independent and non-identically distributed (i.n.i.d.) non-zero components, which plays a key role in the theoretical analysis of SMV based MMSE estimation of the effective channel coefficients in cell-free massive MIMO systems with massive connectivity. Subsequently, based on the obtained decoupling principle of MMSE estimation, likelihood ratio test and the optimal fusion rule, we perform user activity detection based on the received pilot signals at only one AP, or cooperation among the entire set of APs for centralized or distributed detection. Via theoretical analysis, we show that the error probabilities of both centralized and distributed detection tend to zero when the number of APs tends to infinity while the asymptotic ratio between the number of users and pilots is kept constant. We also investigate the asymptotic behavior of oracle estimation in cell-free massive MIMO systems with massive connectivity via random matrix theory. Moreover, in order to demonstrate the potential performance loss of SMV based MMSE estimation, which does not employ the correlation between the received pilot signals at different APs, the multiple measurement vector (MMV) based MMSE estimation, i.e., joint MMSE estimation with pilot signals from all APs, is analyzed via numerical results. Numerical analysis shows that the theoretical analyze with our decoupling principle for the SMV based MMSE estimation of sparse signal vectors with i.n.i.d. non-zero components matches well with the numerical results. Molecular communication via diffusion (MCvD) is a molecular communication method that utilizes the free diffusion of carrier molecules to transfer information at the nanoscale. Due to the random propagation of carrier molecules, intersymbol interference (ISI) is a major issue in an MCvD system. Alongside ISI, interlink interference (ILI) is also an issue that increases the total interference for the MCvD-based multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) approaches. Inspired by the antenna index modulation (IM) concept in traditional communication systems, this paper introduces novel IM-based transmission schemes for MCvD systems. In this paper, molecular space shift keying (MSSK) is proposed as a novel modulation for molecular MIMO systems, and it is found that this method combats ISI and ILI considerably better than the existing MIMO approaches. For nanomachines that have access to two different molecules, the direct extension of MSSK, quadrature MSSK (QMSSK) is also proposed. QMSSK is found to combat ISI considerably well while not performing well against ILI-caused errors. In order to combat ILI more effectively, another dual-molecule-based novel modulation scheme called the molecular spatial modulation (MSM) is proposed. The construction of a quasi-cyclic low density parity-check (QC-LDPC) matrix is usually carried out in two steps. In the first step, a prototype matrix is defined according to certain criteria (size, girth, check and variable node degrees, and so on). The second step involves the expansion of the prototype matrix. During this last phase, an integer value is assigned to each non-null position in the prototype matrix corresponding to the right-rotation of the identity matrix. The problem of determining these integer values is complex. The state-of-the-art solutions use either some mathematical constructions to guarantee a given girth of the final QC-LDPC code, or a random search of values until the target girth is satisfied. In this paper, we propose an alternative/complementary method that reduces the search space by defining large equivalence classes of topologically identical matrices through row and column permutations using additive, structural, and multiplicative transformations. Selecting only a single element per equivalence class can reduce the search space by a few orders of magnitude. Then, we use the formalism of constraint programming to list the exhaustive sets of solutions for a given girth and a given expansion factor. This paper presents the system design, calibration, and example measurements of a novel ultra-wideband, low-cost, real-time channel sounder. The channel sounder operates in the frequency range from 3 to 18 GHz with a 15-GHz bandwidth thus providing a Fourier delay resolution of 66.7 ps. It sequentially measures overlapping sub-bands of 1-GHz bandwidth to cover the whole frequency range. By using a waveform generator and a digitizer with relatively lower sample rates, the design significantly lowers the cost compared with sampling the whole band simultaneously. With the transmitting power of 40 dBm, the maximum measurable path loss is 132 dB without accounting for possible antenna gains. In this paper, we also describe the calibration procedure along with the method to stitch sub-bands into a combined channel response across 15 GHz of bandwidth. The channel sounder performance is compared with a vector network analyzer (VNA) measurements acquired in the same static channels. In contrast to VNAs, however, our channel sounder can measure the whole band in 6 ms and can, thus, operate in dynamic environments with coherence time more than 6 ms. This paper focuses on the design and evaluation of pragmatic schemes for delay-sensitive communication. Specifically, this contribution studies the operation of data links that employ incremental redundancy as a means to shield information bits from the degradation associated with unreliable channels. While this inquiry puts forth a general methodology, exposition centers around erasure channels because they are well suited for analysis. Nevertheless, the goal is to identify both structural properties and design guidelines that are broadly applicable. Conceptually, this paper leverages a methodology, termed sequential differential optimization, aimed at identifying near-optimal block sizes for hybrid ARQ. This technique is applied to erasure channels and it is extended to scenarios where throughput is maximized subject to a constraint on the feedback rate. The analysis shows that the impact of the coding strategy adopted and the propensity of the channel to erase symbols naturally decouple when maximizing throughput. Ultimately, block size selection is informed by approximate distributions on the probability of decoding success at every stage of the incremental transmission process. This novel perspective, which rigorously bridges hybrid automatic repeat request and coding, offers a computationally efficient framework to select code rates and blocklengths for incremental redundancy. In this paper, we consider device-to-device (D2D) communication that is underlaid in a multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system and proposes a new framework for power control and pilot allocation. In this scheme, the cellular users (CUs) in each cell get orthogonal pilots which are reused with reuse factor one across cells, while all the D2D pairs share another set of orthogonal pilots. We derive a closed-form capacity lower bound for the CUs with different receive processing schemes. In addition, we derive a capacity lower bound for the D2D receivers and a closed-form approximation of it. We provide power control algorithms to maximize the minimum spectral efficiency (SE) and to maximize the product of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios in the network. Different from prior works, in our proposed power control schemes, we consider joint pilot and data transmission optimization. Finally, we provide a numerical evaluation, where we compare our proposed power control schemes with the maximum transmit power case and the case of conventional multi-cell massive MIMO without D2D communication. In this paper, we consider a simple coding scheme for spatial modulation, where the same set of active transmit antennas is repeatedly used over consecutive multiple transmissions. Based on a Gaussian approximation, an approximate maximum likelihood (ML) detection problem is formulated to detect the indices of active transmit antennas. We show that the solution to the approximate ML detection problem can achieve a full coding gain. Furthermore, we develop a low-complexity iterative algorithm to solve the problem with low complexity based on a well-known machine learning approach, i.e., variational inference. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can have a near ML performance. A salient feature of the proposed algorithm is that its complexity is independent of the number of active transmit antennas, whereas an exhaustive search for the ML problem requires a complexity that grows exponentially with the number of active transmit antennas. This paper investigates the dynamic access point (AP) clustering and precoding problem in the downlink of user-centric virtual cell networks. The goal is to maximize the weighted sum spectral efficiency (SE) while satisfying the power constraints and AP clustering constraints in adjacent time slots (TSs). By adopting the random walk mobility to model the mobile user equipments’ movement behaviors, we consider dynamic and time-varying channel conditions. Therefore, the weighted sum SE maximization programming takes the form of discrete-time sequence of mixed-integer non-convex optimization problems. In this paper, we propose to solve this sequential problem in two stages. In the first stage, a dynamic AP clustering approach based on discrete particle swarm optimization is developed. This approach takes the advantage of the channel correlation by exploiting the relationship between AP clustering solutions in adjacent TSs to improve the SE performance and reduce complexity. In the second stage, given the AP clustering solution obtained in the first stage, a distributed precoding algorithm is devised via applying the weighted minimum mean square error method. By combining these two stages, we propose a novel dynamic AP clustering and precoding algorithm (DAPC-Pre). The effectiveness of the proposed DAPC-Pre algorithm is verified by the simulation results. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is currently considered as a promising technology for the next-generation wireless networks. In this paper, the error rate performance of NOMA systems is investigated over Nakagami- $m$ fading channels, while considering imperfect successive interference cancelation. In particular, this paper focuses on the pairwise error probability (PEP) analysis, where exact PEP expressions are derived to characterize the performance of all users under different fading conditions. The obtained PEP expressions are then used to derive an exact union bound on the bit error rate (BER). Through the derived PEP expressions, the asymptotic PEP analysis is presented to investigate the maximum achievable diversity gain of NOMA users. Moreover, using the derived BER bound, the power allocation problem for all users in NOMA systems is considered under average power and users BER constraints, which allows realizing the full potential of NOMA. Monte Carlo simulation and numerical results are presented to corroborate the derived analytical expressions and give valuable insights into the error rate performance of each user and the achievable diversity gain. A generalized framework of spectrum sensing disruption for a power-limited adversary is proposed in this paper. In the literature, a conventional sensing attack typically assumes that the adversary has perfect knowledge of the spectral usage status. The framework in this paper considers a more general case where there are uncertainties in the estimates at the adversary. These uncertainties are modeled utilizing the probability of detection and the probability of false alarm. Then, the sum of the conditional probabilities of false detection at the secondary within the spectral range of interest, conditioned on the adversary’s estimated spectrum usage status, is maximized. It is shown that the optimal sensing attack, given perfect estimation is a special case of the proposed framework. When the adversary has perfect spectrum usage information, this framework reduces to a previously demonstrated optimal sensing disruption. When the adversary has imperfect information on the spectral status, the proposed framework is significantly more robust than conventional sensing attacks. In this paper, we investigate the performance of the Viterbi decoding algorithm with/without Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) over a Rician flat fading channel with unlimited interleaving. We show that the decay rate of the average bit error probability with respect to the bit energy to noise ratio is at least equal to $d_{f}$ at high-bit energy to noise ratio for both cases (with ARQ and without ARQ), where $d_{f}$ is the free distance of the convolutional code. The Yamamoto-Itoh flag helps to reduce the average bit error probability by a factor of $4^{d_{f}}$ with a negligible retransmission rate. We also prove an interesting result that the average bit error probability decays exponentially fast with respect to the Rician factor for any fixed bit energy per noise ratio. In this paper, we construct new families of classical convolutional codes (CCC’s) and new families of quantum convolutional codes (QCC’s). The CCC’s are derived from (block) algebraic geometry (AG) codes. Furthermore, new families of CCC’s are constructed by applying the techniques of puncturing, extending, expanding, and by the direct product code construction applied to AG codes. In addition, utilizing the new CCC’s constructed here, we obtain new families of QCC’s. The parameters of these new codes are good. Spatially-coupled (SC) codes are a family of graph-based codes that have attracted significant attention, thanks to their capacity approaching performance and low decoding latency. An SC code is constructed by partitioning an underlying block code into a number of components and coupling their copies together. In this paper, we first introduce a general approach for the enumeration of detrimental combinatorial objects in the graph of finite-length SC codes. Our approach is general in the sense that it effectively works for SC codes with various partitioning schemes, column weights, and memories. Next, we present a two-stage framework for the construction of high performance binary SC codes optimized for the additive white Gaussian noise channels; we aim at minimizing the number of detrimental combinatorial objects in the error floor region. In the first stage, we deploy a novel partitioning scheme, called the optimal overlap partitioning, to produce the optimal partitioning corresponding to the smallest number of detrimental objects. In the second stage, we apply a new circulant power optimizer to further reduce the number of detrimental objects in the lifted graph. SC codes constructed by our new framework have up to two orders of magnitude error floor performance improvement and up to 0.6 dB SNR gain compared to prior state-of-the-art SC codes. Joint pushing and caching is recognized as an efficient remedy to the problem of spectrum scarcity incurred by tremendous mobile data traffic. In this paper, we design the optimal joint pushing and caching policy to maximize bandwidth utilization, which is of fundamental importance to mobile telecom carriers. In particular, we consider a multiuser wireless network with multicast opportunities where each user is equipped with a cache of limited size. First, we formulate the stochastic optimization problem as an infinite horizon average cost Markov decision process. By the structural analysis, we show that how the optimal policy achieves a balance between the current transmission cost and the future average transmission cost. We also show that the optimal average transmission cost decreases with the cache sizes, revealing a tradeoff between storage and bandwidth. Then, due to the fact that obtaining a numerical optimal solution suffers the curse of dimensionality and implementing it requires a centralized controller and global system information, we develop a low-complexity decentralized policy (LDP) by using a linear approximation of the value function and transforming challenging discrete optimization problems into difference of convex (DC) problems, which can be efficiently solved by using DC algorithms. We also obtain an upper bound on the performance gap between the average cost of LDP and the minimum average cost, which can be easily evaluated. Next, we propose an online decentralized algorithm to implement the proposed LDP, when priori knowledge of user demand processes is not available. Finally, using numerical results, we demonstrate the advantage of the proposed solutions over some existing designs. This paper investigates how much the rate region of the two-user Gaussian interference channel can be enlarged by allowing the two source nodes to cooperate. Two cooperative transmission schemes are proposed, based on dirty-paper coding and the assumption that the radio bandwidth is partitioned into two parts, and each part is utilized by one source node. The achievable rate regions and the outage performance of these two schemes are compared with the simplified Han-Kobayashi scheme, which is an efficient coding scheme for the interference channel. Simulation results show that in some channel realizations, the rate region of the Han-Kobayashi scheme is a subset of the rate regions of our two proposed cooperative transmission schemes. Furthermore, a significant gain in outage performance can be obtained, as the cooperative schemes have twice the diversity order of the simplified Han-Kobayashi scheme. While both cooperative schemes are able to yield large diversity gain, one of them can be implemented by simple decoder. With the rise of critical machine-to-machine applications, next generation wireless communication systems must meet challenging requirements with respect to latency and reliability. A key question in this context relates to channel state estimation, which allows the transmitter to adapt the code rate to the channel state. In this paper, we characterize the tradeoff between the training sequence length and data codeword length: shorter channel estimation leaves more time for the payload transmission but reduces the estimation accuracy and causes more decoding errors. Using lower coding rates can mitigate this effect, but may result in a higher backlog of data at the transmitter. In order to optimize the training sequence length and the rate adaptation scheme with respect to the delay performance, we employ queuing analysis on top of accurate models of the physical layer. We obtain an analytically tractable solution to the problem by deriving a closed-form approximation for the decoding error probability due to imperfect channel knowledge and finite-blocklength channel coding. The optimized training sequence length and rate adaptation strategy can reduce the delay violation probability by an order of magnitude, compared with suboptimal strategies that do not consider the delay constraints. This paper addresses point-to-point communication over block-fading channels with independent fading blocks. When both channel state information at the transmitter and receiver (CSIR) are available, most achievable schemes use separable coding, i.e., coding independently and in parallel over different fading states. Unfortunately, separable coding has drawbacks, including large memory requirements at both communication ends. In this paper, a lattice coding and decoding scheme is proposed that achieves the ergodic capacity without separable coding, with lattice codebooks and decoding decision regions that are universal across channel realizations. We first demonstrate this result for fading distributions with discrete, finite support whose sequences are robustly typical. Results are then extended to continuous fading distributions, as well as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In addition, a variant of the proposed scheme is presented for the MIMO ergodic fading channel with CSIR only, where we prove the existence of a universal codebook that achieves rates within a constant gap to capacity for finite-support fading distributions. Zero correlation zone (ZCZ) sequence sets and Golay complementary sets (GCSs) have different correlation properties and hence have different engineering applications. A number of constructions of ZCZ sequence sets and GCSs have been proposed, respectively, in the literature. In addition, some ZCZ sequence sets can be constructed from mutually orthogonal GCSs. In this paper, the relationship between GCSs and ZCZ sets is discovered further. We propose a new type of sequence sets which are ZCZ sequence sets and also GCSs. They are called the Golay-ZCZ sequence sets in this paper. Therefore, they have low peak-to-average power ratios when employed in OFDM systems due to the good autocorrelation properties of GCSs. Besides, the Golay-ZCZ sets possess zero autocorrelations and cross-correlations within their ZCZ and hence have the potential application to synchronization. Faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) transmission employing antenna polarization multiplexing and higher order modulation (HoM) schemes can significantly increase the spectral efficiency (SE) of the existing wireless backhaul links. However, the benefits of each of these SE enhancement techniques come with a price. While FTN introduces inter-symbol interference, a dual-polarized (DP) transmission suffers from cross-polarization interference (XPI), and HoM makes a communication system vulnerable to phase-noise (PN) distortions. In this paper, we investigate, for the first time, a DP-FTN HoM transmission system. We propose a XPI cancellation and PN mitigation structure, coupled with adaptive decision-feedback equalization or linear precoding, to jointly mitigate interference and accomplish carrier-phase tracking. The DP systems combined with the FTN signaling presented in this paper offer more than 150% increase in SE compared with a single-polarized Nyquist transmission. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithms is demonstrated through computer simulations of a coded DP-FTN microwave communication system in the presence of PN. Numerical results suggest that with the proposed interference cancellation methods, a DP-FTN transmission can yield a 3–5.5-dB performance improvement over an equivalent DP-Nyquist system that employs a higher modulation order to achieve the same data rate. Cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is an alternative topology for future wireless networks, where a large number of single-antenna access points (APs) are distributed over the coverage area. There are no cells but all users are jointly served by the APs using network MIMO methods. Prior works have claimed that the CF massive MIMO inherits the basic properties of cellular massive MIMO, namely, channel hardening and favorable propagation. In this paper, we evaluate if one can rely on these properties when having a realistic stochastic AP deployment. Our results show that channel hardening only appears in special cases, for example, when the pathloss exponent is small. However, by using 5–10 antennas per AP, instead of one, we can substantially improve the hardening. Only spatially well-separated users will exhibit favorable propagation, but when adding more antennas and/or reducing the pathloss exponent, it becomes more likely for favorable propagation to occur. The conclusion is that we cannot rely on the channel hardening and the favorable propagation when analyzing and designing the CF massive MIMO networks, but we need to use achievable rate expressions and resource allocation schemes that work well also in the absence of these properties. This paper treats the problem of optimal resource allocation over time in a finite-horizon setting, in which the resource become available only sequentially and in incremental values, and the utility function is concave and can freely vary over time. Such resource allocation problems have direct applications in data communication networks (e.g., energy harvesting systems). This problem is studied extensively for special choices of the concave utility function (time invariant and logarithmic) in which case the optimal resource allocation policies are well-understood. This paper treats this problem in its general form and analytically characterizes the structure of the optimal resource allocation policy and devises an algorithm for computing the exact solutions analytically. An observation instrumental to devising the provided algorithm is that there exist time instances at which the available resources are exhausted, with no carryover to future. This algorithm identifies all such instances, which in turn, facilitates breaking the original problem into multiple problems with significantly reduced dimensions. Furthermore, some widely used special cases in which the algorithm takes simpler structures are characterized, and the application to the energy harvesting systems is discussed. Numerical evaluations are provided to assess the key properties of the optimal resource allocation structure and to compare the performance with the generic convex optimization algorithms. This paper investigates the design and analysis of minimum mean square error (MMSE) turbo decision feedback equalization (DFE), with expectation propagation (EP), for single carrier modulations. Classical non iterative DFE structures have substantial advantages at high-data rates, even compared with turbo linear equalizers-interference cancellers (LE-IC), hence making turbo DFE-IC schemes an attractive solution. In this paper, we derive an iterative DFE-IC, capitalizing on the use of soft feedback based on expectation propagation, along with the use of prior information for improved filtering and interference cancellation. This turbo iterative DFE-IC significantly outperforms turbo LE-IC, especially at high-spectral efficiency and also exhibits performance improvements over existing DFE-IC variants. The proposed scheme can also be self-iterated, as done in the recent trend on EP-based equalizers, and it is shown to be an attractive alternative to linear self-iterated receivers. For time-varying (TV) filter equalizers, an efficient matrix inversion scheme is also proposed, considerably reducing the computational complexity relative to existing methods. Using finite-length and asymptotic analysis on a severely selective channel, the proposed DFE-IC is shown to achieve higher rates than known alternatives, with better waterfall thresholds and faster convergence, while keeping a similar computational complexity. This paper analyzes an emerging architecture of cellular network utilizing both planar base stations uniformly distributed in the Euclidean plane and base stations located on roads. An example of this architecture is that where, in addition to conventional planar cellular base stations and users, vehicles also play the role of both base stations and users. A Poisson line process is used to model the road network and, conditionally on the lines, linear Poisson point processes are used to model the vehicles on the roads. The conventional planar base stations and users are modeled by the independent planar Poisson point processes. We use Palm calculus to investigate the statistical properties of a typical user in such a network. Specifically, this paper discusses two different Palm distributions, with respect to the user point processes depending on its type: planar or vehicular. We derive the distance to the nearest base station, the association of the typical users, and the coverage probability of the typical user. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive characterization of coverage of all possible cellular transmissions in this setting, namely, vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure, infrastructure-to-vehicle, and infrastructure-to-infrastructure. An NoC (network on chip) constructed with silicon photonic microrings can be implemented with CMOS technology and integrated with processor cores on the same die. Each microring in the NoC has two switching states, one consuming significantly less power than the other. Different routing schemes can lead to different numbers of microrings in the high-power consumption state, and result in different power consumptions for the NoC. In an earlier work, a looping-based routing algorithm was proposed which exploits the different power consumption characteristics of the two switching states of a microring so as to minimize the power consumption of a Benes-type NoC; but this algorithm cannot provide an optical solution. In this paper, we will show the necessary and sufficient conditions for finding the optimal solution for a Benes-type NoC. We also present a new routing algorithm. Compared with the algorithm of the previous work, the new algorithm can reduce the number of microrings in the high-power-consumption state by as many as $(n - 2)\cdot 2^{n-2}$ in a $2^{n}\times 2^{n}$ Benes-type NoC for certain interconnection patterns. In this paper, we propose a new adaptive modulation based on the wavelet packet transform, which targets a good resistance against frequency selective channels while avoiding a large PAPR. Classical multi-carrier modulation schemes divide the channel bandwidth into narrowband sub-channels to improve its robustness against frequency selective fading. However, they suffer from the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) problem, which occurs due to a random constructive addition of sub-carriers. By contrast, single carrier modulation schemes, where each transmitted symbol fully occupies the bandwidth, are more sensitive to frequency selective environments and less affected by the PAPR problem. In this paper, we show how the bandwidth division can be reconfigurable and adapted to the channel properties, and we provide several examples to prove that the proposed adaptive modulation represents an alternative modulation which is adjustable between two extreme cases: single carrier modulation and classical multi-carrier modulation. In wireless communication systems, channel state feedback (CSF) is widely used to improve link performance. However, CSF consumes extra system resources and results in transmission overhead. In this paper, we evaluate such resource consumption in terms of bit rate and provide an explicit expression for the lower bound of the CSF overhead. We propose an overhead optimization mechanism under the constraint of channel state reconstruction accuracy. The numerical simulations show that our paper is beneficial to select the optimum CSF parameters, including the average bit number and channel state feedback period. It is also shown that the proposed overhead optimization scheme is able to reduce the system resource consumption with a guaranteed reconstruction accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper considers a diffusion-based molecular communication system, where the transmitter uses reaction shift keying (RSK) as the modulation scheme. We focus on the demodulation of RSK signal at the receiver. The receiver consists of a front-end molecular circuit and a back-end demodulator. The front-end molecular circuit is a set of chemical reactions consisting of multiple chemical species. The optimal demodulator computes the posteriori probability of the transmitted symbols given the history of the observation. The derivation of the optimal demodulator requires the solution to a specific Bayesian filtering problem. The solution to this Bayesian filtering problem had been derived for a few specific molecular circuits and specific choice(s) of observed chemical species. The derivation of such solution is also lengthy. The key contribution of this paper is to present a general solution to this Bayesian filtering problem, which can be applied to any molecular circuit and any choice of observed species. This paper proposes a leader–follower-based model of mobile molecular communication networks for target detection applications. The proposed model divides the application functionalities of molecular communication networks into two types of mobile bio-nanomachine: leader and follower bio-nanomachines. Leader bio-nanomachines distribute in the environment to detect a target and create an attractant gradient around the target. Follower bio-nanomachines move according to the attractant gradient established by leader bio-nanomachines; they approach the target and perform necessary functionalities, such as releasing drug molecules. This paper develops mathematical expressions for the proposed model, describes wet laboratory experiments designed to estimate model parameters, and performs biologically realistic computer simulation experiments to evaluate the performance of the proposed model. The main contributions of this paper are to demonstrate the functional division of molecular communication networks, which will facilitate the design and development of molecular communication networks. The emergence of interference alignment (IA) as a degrees-of-freedom optimal strategy motivates the need to investigate whether IA can be leveraged to aid conventional network utility maximization algorithms, which are typically only capable of finding locally optimal solutions. To test the usefulness of IA in this context, this paper proposes a two-stage optimization framework for the downlink of a $G$ -cell multi-antenna network with $K$ users/cell. The first stage of the proposed framework focuses on nulling interference from a set of dominant interferers using IA, while the second stage optimizes transmit and receive beamformers to maximize a network-wide utility using the IA solution as the initial condition. Further, this paper establishes a set of new feasibility results for partial IA that can be used to guide the number of dominant interferers to be nulled in the first stage. Through simulations on specific topologies of a cluster of base stations, it is observed that the impact of IA depends on the choice of the utility function and the presence of out-of-cluster interference. In the absence of out-of-cluster interference, the proposed framework outperforms straightforward optimization when maximizing the minimum rate, while providing marginal gains when maximizing sum rate.
