A Gaussian integer is a complex number whose real and imaginary parts are both integers. Meanwhile, a sequence is defined as perfect if and only if it has an ideal periodic auto-correlation function. This paper proposes a method for constructing sparse perfect Gaussian integer sequences (SPGISs) in which most of the sequence elements are zero. The proposed SPGISs are obtained by linearly combining four base sequences or their cyclic-shift equivalents using nonzero Gaussian integer coefficients of equal magnitudes. Each base sequence contains four nonzero elements belonging to the set \\pm 1, \pm j\. The number of nonzero elements of the constructed SPGISs depends on the choice of complex coefficients and cyclic shifts. However, each SPGIS has at most 16 nonzero elements, irrespective of the sequence length. A systematic investigation is performed into the properties of the SPGISs and their Fourier dual equivalents. Finally, a general expression is derived for a perfect Gaussian integer sequence (PGIS) of length $4n$, where $n$ is any positive integer and most of the sequence elements are nonzero. The paper proposed a novel intelligent transmission surface (ITS) aided transmitter in an intelligent reflection surface (IRS) assisted multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network. The ITS deployed in the transmitter architecture can reduce the power consumption in signal beamforming at the base station (BS), and the IRS can help the information transfer from the ITS-aided transmitter to the users. We first maximize the weighted sum rate (WSR) of the users by jointly designing the beamforming vector at the BS and the phase shifts of ITS and IRS. To solve this non-convex optimization problem, we propose an effective algorithm in which the Lagrangian dual transform, the alternative optimization (AO) algorithm and the quadratic transform (QT) method are adopted to simplify the objective function. Then, the bisection search and the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm are considered to design the optimal beamforming vector and phase shifts of ITS and IRS, respectively. Furthermore, the paper explores the energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem to emphasize the value of the ITS-assisted transmitter in terms of power savings. In this paper, we consider deploying an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) to enhance the downlink (DL) energy transfer and uplink (UL) information transmission efficiency for secure multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless powered communication networks (WPCNs). We aim to maximize the secrecy throughput of all users by jointly optimizing the DL/UL time allocation, the energy transmit covariance matrix of hybrid access point (AP), the information transmit beamforming matrix of users and the phase shifts of IRS in DL/UL, subject to constraints of energy/information transmit power at the hybrid AP/users and that of unit-modulus IRS phase shifts for DL/UL. To tackle the non-convex problem, we first transform the original problem into an equivalent form based on the mean-square error (MSE) method given time allocation, and then apply the alternating algorithm to update the optimization variables iteratively. Specifically, the energy covariance matrix and the information beamforming matrix are obtained based on the dual subgradient method. For the IRS phase shifts, we investigate two IRS beamforming reflection setups, namely different DL/UL IRS beamforming and identical DL/UL IRS beamforming. For the former case, the second-order cone programming technique and the Majorization-Minimization algorithm/element by element iterative algorithm are applied to obtain the DL and UL IRS phase shifts, respectively. For the latter case, the IRS phase shifts are obtained by the successive convex approximation technique. To further reduce the computational complexity of the single-user system, we derive the closed-form solutions of IRS phase shifts in each iteration for the two different reflection setups. Cell-free millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications have been proposed as promising enablers for the next generation wireless networks. In this paper, we study the user association and hybrid beamforming in cell-free mmWave systems without full channel state information (CSI) acquisition. We consider a cloud radio access network (C-RAN), where multiple remote radio heads (RRHs) are distributed to communicate with users via analog beamforming, and connected to a centralized baseband unit (BBU) through fronthaul links which executes digital beamforming. We aim to jointly design user association, hybrid beamforming, and fronthaul compression with the aid of uplink training. A train-and-design framework is developed to achieve this goal. In particular, we first propose a two-stage uplink training approach to assist RRH-level design, during which the analog beamforming and user association are obtained. After that, digital beamforming and fronthaul compression are optimized at BBU based on the training results. Two performance metrics are considered in this paper, i.e. weighted sum-rate maximization and max-min fairness. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed train-and-design framework for both sum-rate maximization and max-min fairness performance metrics. We provide the first-ever performance evaluation of orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation in cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. To investigate the trade-off between performance and overhead, we apply embedded pilot-aided and superimposed pilot-based channel estimation methods. We then derive a closed-form expression for the individual user downlink and uplink spectral efficiencies (SEs) as a function of the numbers of APs, users and delay-Doppler domain channel estimate parameters. Based on these analytical results, we also present new scaling laws that the AP’s and user’s transmit power should satisfy, to sustain a desirable quality of service. It is found that when the number of APs, $M_{a}$ , grows without bound, we can reduce the transmit power of each user and AP proportionally to $1/M_{a}$ and $1/M_{a}^{2}$ , respectively, during the uplink and downlink phases. We compare the OTFS performance with that of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) at high-mobility conditions. Our findings reveal that, OTFS modulation with embedded pilot-based channel estimation provides up to 20-fold gain over the OFDM counterpart in terms of 95%-likely per-user downlink SE. In this study, we present a unifying framework for future reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted space shift keying (SSK) systems; we additionally propose two novel transmission schemes. The key strategies surrounding this concept, namely power-sensing RIS-SSK and partitioned RIS-SSK, grant knowledge of the activated transmitter (Tx) antenna index at the RIS, which, when using SSK, allows us to adjust the reflection phases. The performance of the proposed scheme is investigated in terms of the theoretical average bit error rate (ABER), and the effect of non-ideal transceivers. The performance is then compared to that of a reference RIS-SSK scheme, and a complexity analysis is provided. The obtained results, verified by extensive computer simulations, demonstrate that the partitioned and power-sensing RIS-SSK schemes achieve a higher ABER than the reference one. Moreover, hardware impairments clearly have a critically degrading impact on the system performance for all schemes, and should be carefully taken into account in future communication systems. To reduce the computational complexity and channel estimation overhead for multi-intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication, we consider a joint design of the hybrid precoders at the base station and the passive precoders at the IRSs to maximize the ergodic spectral efficiency by exploiting the twin-timescale channel state information (CSI). Specifically, the digital precoder is designed according to the instantaneous CSI of a reduced-dimensional assist channel matrix, while the IRS passive reflection coefficient matrices and the analog precoder are optimized using the statistical CSI of all links. However, such a design problem is challenging to solve due to the non-convexity and the twin timescale. This work proposes efficient algorithms to jointly design the precoders, where the update of the IRS reflection coefficient matrices is independent of the hybrid precoders and the design of the analog precoder is independent of the digital precoder. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms and provide the application scenes of the fully-connected and subarray-connected architectures. The results also show that the ergodic spectral efficiency for the fully-connected architecture using the twin-timescale CSI can approach that using the existing CSI schemes with less channel estimation overhead and computational complexity. We provide a mutual information lower bound that can be used to analyze the effect of training in models with unknown parameters. For large-scale systems, we show that this bound can be calculated using the difference between two derivatives of a conditional entropy function. We provide a step-by-step process for computing the bound, and apply the steps to a quantized large-scale multiple-antenna wireless communication system with an unknown channel. The massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission technology has recently attracted much attention in the non-geostationary, e.g., low earth orbit (LEO) satellite communication (SATCOM) systems since it can significantly improve the energy efficiency (EE) and spectral efficiency. In this work, we develop a hybrid analog/digital precoding technique in the massive MIMO LEO SATCOM downlink, which reduces the onboard hardware complexity and power consumption. In the proposed scheme, the analog precoder is implemented via a more practical twin-resolution phase shifting (TRPS) network to make a meticulous tradeoff between the power consumption and array gain. In addition, we consider and study the impact of the distortion effect of the nonlinear power amplifiers (NPAs) in the system design. By jointly considering all the above factors, we propose an efficient algorithmic approach for the TRPS-based hybrid precoding problem with NPAs. In massive grant-free transmission, joint user activity detection (UAD) and channel estimation (CE) is essential for data recovery at the receiver, which has been extensively researched in frequency-flat fading scenarios. However, in practical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based systems, frequency-selective fading (FSF) leads to a significant increase in the number of channel coefficients to be estimated, imposing new challenges for the design of joint UAD and CE algorithms. Therefore, this paper investigates joint UAD and CE for OFDM-based massive grant-free transmission over FSF channels. Firstly, by employing the discrete cosine transform (DCT), the joint estimation problem is formulated as the compressed sensing (CS) problem with the reduced dimension of the DCT-domain channel response vector. Then, based on the low-dimension sparse channel model, we develop a hybrid message passing (HMP) algorithm under the constrained Bethe free energy (BFE) minimization framework to achieve efficient joint UAD and CE. To deal with the lack of the DCT-domain prior information in practical scenarios, we parameterize it as the Cauchy distribution or the Laplacian distribution and learn their parameters by the proposed HMP algorithm. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has emerged as a promising technique to enhance wireless communication performance cost-effectively. The existing literature has mainly considered IRS being deployed near user terminals to improve their performance. However, this approach may incur a high cost if IRSs need to be densely deployed in the network to cater to random user locations. To avoid such high deployment cost, in this paper we consider a new IRS aided wireless network architecture, where IRSs are deployed in the vicinity of each base station (BS) to assist in its communications with distributed users regardless of their locations. Besides significantly enhancing IRSs’ signal coverage, this scheme helps reduce the IRS-associated channel estimation overhead as compared to conventional user-side IRSs, by exploiting the nearly static BS-IRS channels over short distance. For this scheme, we propose a new two-stage transmission protocol to achieve IRS channel estimation and reflection optimization for uplink data transmission efficiently. In addition, we propose effective methods for solving the user-IRS association problem based on long-term/statistical channel knowledge and the selected user-IRS-BS cascaded channel estimation problem. Finally, all IRSs’ passive reflections are jointly optimized with the BS’s multi-antenna receive combining to maximize the minimum achievable rate among all users for data transmission. Numerical results show that the proposed co-site-IRS empowered BS scheme can achieve significant performance gains over the conventional BS without co-site IRS and existing schemes for IRS channel estimation and reflection optimization, thus enabling an appealing low-cost and high-performance BS design for future wireless networks. To accommodate the stringent requirements of massive connectivity and ultra-high throughput, both reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) have been perceived as the key techniques for future communication networks. In this paper, a versatile framework is conceived to boost transmit power efficiency for RIS-enabled multi-group NOMA networks in the presence of coordinated multi-point (CoMP) reception and imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC). Particularly, a group-level SIC (GSIC) method is proposed to eliminate the decoded group’s interference together with the well-designed transceivers to mitigate the aggregated interference, including the intra-group interference, the residual interference caused by imperfect SIC, and the interference of NOMA users decoded later. According to the novel framework, a power minimization problem is formulated by collaboratively optimizing the transmit power and the phase shifts. To render the problem tractable, an alternating scheme is developed to optimize the transmit power and the phase shifts iteratively. Specifically, the transmit powers for the users in the same group are devised by a parallel iteration algorithm, whilst the phase shifts are optimized by a sequential rotation method. The increasing demands of power supply and data rate for mobile devices promote the research of simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). Optical SWIPT, as known as simultaneous light information and power transfer (SLIPT), has the potential for providing high-capacity communication and high-power wireless charging. However, SLIPT technologies based on light-emitting diodes have low efficiency due to energy dissipation over the air. Laser-based SLIPT technologies need strict positioning accuracy and scanning resolution, which may lead to the increase of costs and complexity. In this paper, we propose a mobile SLIPT scheme based on spatially separated laser resonator (SSLR) and intra-cavity second harmonic generation. The power and data are transferred via separated frequencies, while they share the same self-aligned resonant beam path, without the needs of receiver positioning and beam steering. We establish the analysis model of the resonant beam power and its second harmonic power. Numerical results show that the proposed system can achieve watt-level battery charging power and above 10-bit/s/Hz achievable rate at 6-m distance, which satisfies the requirements of most indoor mobile devices. We propose novel compression algorithms for time-varying channel state information (CSI) in wireless communications. The proposed scheme combines (lossy) vector quantisation and (lossless) compression. First, the new vector quantisation technique is based on a class of parametrised companders applied on each component of the normalised CSI vector. Our algorithm chooses a suitable compander in an intuitively simple way whenever empirical data are available. Then, the sequences of quantisation indices are compressed using a context-tree-based approach. Essentially, we update the estimate of the conditional distribution of the source at each instant and encode the current symbol with the estimated distribution. The algorithms have low complexity, are linear-time in both the spatial dimension and time duration, and can be implemented in an online fashion. As a promising technology with disruptive innovation, user-centric network can meet the data traffic demand and user service demand in the future mobile networks. It completely transforms the traditional cell-centric paradigm into user-centric paradigm, requiring the deployment of a large number of access points (APs). However, the massive deployment of APs leads to issues such as high hardware cost, huge power consumption and complex interference management. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), as another promising technology, can expand signal coverage, suppress interference, reduce hardware cost and power consumption. Inspired by this, we propose a novel RIS assisted user-centric network that uses RIS to replace some low utilization APs to reduce cost as well as power consumption, and deploy more RIS to achieve energy-efficient user-centric communication. In order to take full advantages of RIS, we jointly optimize passive beamforming at RIS and power control at AP to maximize the energy efficiency of the network. Since this problem is intractable and non-convex, an effectively alternating optimization algorithm, capitalizing on fractional programming and successive lower-bound maximization is proposed. Computation over multiple access channels (CoMAC) has been proposed to solve the problem of spectrum scarcity in wireless networks, which combines communication and computation efficiently using the superposition property of wireless channels. In this paper, we consider a multi-cluster CoMAC network, whose performance is affected by the inter-cluster interference and the non-uniform fading. To minimize the sum mean squared error of signals aggregated at different fusion centers (FCs), we propose a transceiver design for multi-cluster CoMAC. Specifically, we adopt a uniform-forcing transmitter design to formulate the receiver design as a quadratic sum-of-ratios problem with nonconvex quadratic constraints. Then, we propose a branch-and-bound algorithm to find its optimal solution with a given error tolerance. To solve the problem in a decentralized way, we develop a distributed algorithm based on the primal decomposition theory. Each subproblem is solved by using the successive convex approximation method. Further combining Lagrange duality, we derive the optimal solution structure of each subproblem, based on which we can find the solution with lower complexity. The integration of aerial platforms to provide ubiquitous coverage and connectivity for densely deployed terrestrial networks is expected to be a reality in the emerging sixth-generation networks. Energy-effificient and secure transmission designs are two important components for integrated terrestrial-aerial networks (ITAN). Inlight of the potential of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) for significantly reducing the system power consumption and boosting information security, this paper proposes a multi-layer RIS-assisted secure ITAN architecture to defend against simultaneous jamming and eavesdropping attacks, and investigates energy-efficient hybrid beamforming for it. Specifically, with the availability of imperfect angular channel state information (CSI), we propose a block coordinate descent (BCD) framework for the joint optimization of the user’s received decoder, the terrestrial and aerial digital precoder, and the multi-layer RIS analog precoder to maximize the system energy efficiency (EE) performance. For the design of the received decoder, a heuristic beamforming scheme is proposed to convert the worst-case design problem into a min-max one and facilitate the developing a closed-form solution. For the design of the digital precoder, we propose an iterative sequential convex approximation approach via capitalizing the auxiliary variables and first-order Taylor series expansion. Finally, a monotonic vertex-update algorithm with a penalty convex-concave procedure (P-CCP) is proposed to obtain the analog precoder with satisfactory performance. This paper investigates intelligent reflecting surface based backscatter communication (IRS-BackCom), in order to realize computational task offloading of energy-constrained mobile edge computing network in a self-sustainable manner. Specifically, the system operation is divided into two phases. In the first one, the ambient signal energy from a power beacon (PB) either provides the energy supply of local computing and energy harvesting circuits, or flows into the energy storage, when reaching the IRS. In the second one, the stored energy is used to enable IRS-BackCom for partial computational data offloading and energize local computing circuit. Based on this, the maximization problem of sum computational bits is formulated. By jointly optimizing the beamforming vector at the PB, the backscatter matrix at the IRS, the time scheduling of two-phase process, as well as the time of local computing, sum computational bits are maximized. In addition, this paper proposes element clustering to realize BackCom, so as to reduce the control and computation complexity of IRS. According to different operating mechanisms, two cluster operation modes are considered, namely independent cluster operation mode and joint cluster operation mode. Millimeter wave (mmWave) and massive MIMO systems are intrinsic components of 5G and beyond. These systems rely on using beamforming codebooks for both initial access and data transmission. Current beam codebooks, however, generally consist of a large number of narrow beams that scan all possible directions, leading to large training overhead. Further, these codebooks do not normally account for hardware impairments or possible non-uniform array geometries, and their calibration process is expensive. To overcome these limitations, this paper develops an efficient online machine learning framework that learns how to adapt the codebook beam patterns to the specific deployment, surrounding environment, user distribution, and hardware characteristics. This is done by designing a novel complex-valued neural network architecture in which the neuron weights directly model the beamforming weights of the analog phase shifters, accounting for the key hardware constraints. This model learns the codebook beams through online and self-supervised training avoiding the need for explicit channel state information. This respects the practical situations where the channel is imperfect or hard to obtain. Simulation results highlight the capability of the proposed solution in learning environment and hardware aware beam codebooks, which reduce the training overhead and improve the robustness against possible hardware impairments. Due to their ability to create favorable line-of-sight (LoS) propagation environments, intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) are regarded as promising enablers for future millimeter-wave (mm-wave) wireless communication. In this paper, we investigate channel estimation for IRS-assisted mm-wave multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems. By leveraging the sparsity of mm-wave channels in the angular domain, we formulate the channel estimation problem as an $\ell _{1}$ -norm regularized optimization problem with fixed-rank constraints. To tackle the non-convexity of the formulated problem, an efficient algorithm is proposed by capitalizing on alternating minimization and manifold optimization (MO), which yields a locally optimal solution. To further reduce the computational complexity of the estimation algorithm, we propose a compressive sensing- (CS-) based channel estimation approach. In particular, a three-stage estimation protocol is put forward where the subproblem in each stage can be solved via low-complexity CS methods. Furthermore, based on the acquired channel state information (CSI) of the cascaded channel, we design a passive beamforming algorithm for maximization of the spectral efficiency. Simulation results reveal that the proposed MO-based estimation (MO-EST) and beamforming algorithms significantly outperform two benchmark schemes while the CS-based estimation (CS-EST) algorithm strikes a balance between performance and complexity. This paper investigates physical layer security for a large-scale WSN with random multiple access, where each fusion center in the network randomly schedules a number of sensors to upload their sensed data subject to the overhearing of randomly distributed eavesdroppers. We propose an uncoordinated random jamming scheme in which those unscheduled sensors send jamming signals with a certain probability to defeat the eavesdroppers. With the aid of stochastic geometry theory and order statistics, we derive analytical expressions for the connection outage probability and secrecy outage probability to characterize transmission reliability and secrecy, respectively. Based on the obtained analytical results, we formulate an optimization problem for maximizing the sum secrecy throughput subject to both reliability and secrecy constraints, considering a joint design of the wiretap code rates for each scheduled sensor and the jamming probability for the unscheduled sensors. We provide both optimal and low-complexity sub-optimal algorithms to tackle the above problem, and further reveal various properties on the optimal parameters which are useful to guide practical designs. In particular, we demonstrate that the proposed random jamming scheme is beneficial for improving the sum secrecy throughput, and the optimal jamming probability is the result of trade-off between secrecy and throughput. We also show that the throughput performance of the sub-optimal scheme approaches that of the optimal one when facing a stringent reliability constraint or a loose secrecy constraint. In this work, we propose quantum assisted eigenvalue estimation and target detection algorithms for a large sensor array via Hamiltonian simulation. Quantum algorithms provide complexity advantage of a certain class of problems on a quantum computer with fewer physical resources as compared to their classical counterparts. The proposed algorithms make use of the quantum phase estimation (QPE) as its core computing component. We have introduced an analytical quantum framework to map from classical to quantum in the context of target detection. Target detection involves an appropriate choice of threshold based on the probability of detection or false alarm. We exploited the massive sensor array structure and invoked the random matrix theory to propose an optimal threshold. It also takes into account the quantum measurement noise in the framework. Numerical simulations are performed to ascertain the efficacy of the proposed framework. The results suggest near term applications of the quantum algorithm for large-scale linear systems. Caching popular contents at edge networks (such as small-cell base stations) has been proposed to deal with the ever-growing mobile traffic. At the meantime, recommendation system is able to shape user demands for further prompting caching gain. In this paper, we study a multi-antenna multi-cell edge network employing transmit beamforming with caching-aware recommendation and user association. We first establish a framework for the joint problem of beamforming, user association, content caching and recommendation to minimize the content transmission delay of mobile users, by specifying a set of necessary conditions for all four component functions of the network. The resulting optimization problem corresponds to a non-convex, multi-timescale, and mixed-integer programming problem, which is hard to handle. To deal with the difficulty in solving the joint optimization problem by the direct formulation, we equivalently decompose it into three sub-problems. Then, we develop a computationally-efficient iterative algorithm to obtain the sub-optimal solution, where the three subproblems are tackled iteratively. In this paper, we investigate the modeling and design of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted optical communication systems, which can circumvent the line-of-sight (LOS) requirement in multi-link free space optical (FSO) systems. The FSO laser beams incident on the optical IRSs have a Gaussian power intensity profile and a nonlinear phase profile, whereas the plane waves in radio frequency (RF) systems have a uniform power intensity profile and a linear phase profile. Given these substantial differences, the results available for IRS-assisted RF systems are not applicable to IRS-assisted FSO systems. Therefore, we develop a new analytical channel model for point-to-point IRS-assisted FSO systems based on the Huygens-Fresnel principle. Our analytical model captures the impact of the size, position, and orientation of the IRS as well as its phase shift profile on the end-to-end channel. To allow the sharing of the optical IRS by multiple FSO links, we propose three different protocols, namely the time division (TD), IRS-division (IRSD), and IRS homogenization (IRSH) protocols. The proposed protocols address the specific characteristics of FSO systems including the non-uniformity and possible misalignment of the laser beams. Furthermore, to compare the proposed IRS sharing protocols, we analyze the bit error rate (BER) and the outage probability of IRS-assisted multi-link FSO systems in the presence of inter-link interference. Our simulation results validate the accuracy of the proposed analytical channel model for IRS-assisted FSO systems and confirm that this model is applicable for both large and intermediate IRS-receiver lens distances. Furthermore, we show that for the proposed IRSD and IRSH protocols, inter-link interference becomes negligible if the laser beams are properly centered on the IRS and the transceivers are carefully positioned, respectively. This paper considers an uplink reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, where the phase shifts of the RIS are designed relying on statistical channel state information (CSI). Considering the complex environment, the general Rician channel model is adopted for both the users-RIS links and RIS-BS links. We first derive the closed-form approximate expressions for the achievable rate which holds for arbitrary numbers of base station (BS) antennas and RIS elements. Then, we utilize the derived expressions to provide some insights, including the asymptotic rate performance, the power scaling laws, and the impacts of various system parameters on the achievable rate. We also tackle the sum-rate maximization and the minimum user rate maximization problems by optimizing the phase shifts at the RIS based on genetic algorithm (GA). Finally, extensive simulations are provided to validate the benefits by integrating RIS into conventional massive MIMO systems. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is an emerging cost-efficient technology to enhance communication performance by implementing a large number of passive reflecting elements with tunable phases in wireless systems. In this paper, we propose a general framework for the IRS-aided MIMO system designs under both single-user and multi-user setups, in which the diverse performance metrics including weighted mutual information and weighted MSE, and the realistic multiple weighted power constraint are taken into consideration. Leveraging the alternating optimization approach, the optimal IRS phase shifts are obtained in semi-closed forms. Specifically, based on the matrix-monotonic optimization theory, it is found that optimizing IRS phase shifts is essentially equivalent to tuning the eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors of the MSE matrix. Then the proposed general framework is extended to a multi-user system by introducing a majorization-minimization (MM)-based method for IRS phase shift optimization. Simulation results show that our proposed optimal design brings significant enhancement on the chosen performance metric compared to the traditional MIMO systems without the IRS, and also significantly outperforms various benchmark designs in both single-user and multi-user systems. In this paper, we consider a real-time deep learning-based symbol detection approach for MIMO-OFDM systems. To exploit the temporal correlation of the wireless channel and the time-frequency structure of OFDM signals, a recurrent neural network (RNN) with deep feedforward output layers is introduced, where the recurrent layers and feedforward output layers are designed to process time-domain and frequency-domain information respectively. Reservoir computing (RC), a special type of RNN, and extreme learning machine (ELM), a special type of feedforward neural network, are chosen as the corresponding building blocks to facilitate over-the-air training. An online training loss objective is introduced to recursively update the neural weights in real-time. We believe this is the first work in the literature to realize real-time machine learning for MIMO-OFDM symbol detection, i.e., conducting NN-based symbol detection on an OFDM symbol basis. We demonstrate that (1) the IEEE standardized WiFi training sequence can be directly applied as the real-time training sequence (2) the symbol detection performance can be further improved by using our theoretically derived pilot pattern. Evaluation results show that our RC-ELM-based symbol detection method outperforms traditional model-based techniques as well as state-of-the-art learning-based approaches in highly dynamic channel environments for real-time symbol detection. In this paper, we conceive the design of dynamic wireless networks assisted by multiple intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs), where the connection states between users and IRSs are capable of being updated timely. Taking into account the time-varying states of the system, we further construct a long-term dynamic process. Our goal is to maximize the time average sum-rate of the dynamic system under the time average rate and power constraints of users, via jointly optimizing the power allocation at users and the reflecting coefficients at IRSs. With the aid of Lyapunov concept-based drift-plus-penalty (DPP) algorithm, the long-term optimization problem is formulated as an infinite-horizon time-average one. Subsequently, the fractional programming method based on Lagrangian dual transform is applied to optimize power allocation and reflecting coefficients in an iterative manner, and the closed-form solutions of power and reflecting coefficients can be obtained at each iteration. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the convergence and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Further performance comparisons indicate that the proposed algorithm can maintain a balance between supply and demand for resource allocation and improve the fairness of users. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a promising technology to extend the wireless signal coverage and support the high performance communication. By intelligently adjusting the reflection coefficients of a large number of passive reflecting elements, the IRS can modify the wireless propagation environment in favour of signal transmission. Different from most of the prior works which did not consider any cooperation between IRSs, in this work we propose and study a cooperative double-IRS aided multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system under the line-of-sight (LoS) propagation channels. We investigate the capacity maximization problem by jointly optimizing the transmit covariance matrix and the passive beamforming matrices of the two cooperative IRSs. Although the above problem is non-convex and difficult to solve, we transform and simplify the original problem by exploiting a tractable characterization of the LoS channels. Then we develop a novel low-complexity algorithm whose complexity is independent of the number of IRS elements. Moreover, we analyze the capacity scaling orders of the double-IRS aided MIMO system with respect to an asymptotically large number of IRS elements or transmit power, which significantly outperform those of the conventional single-IRS aided MIMO system, thanks to the cooperative power gain brought by the double-reflection link and the spatial multiplexing gain harvested from the two single-reflection links. Extensive numerical results are provided to show that by exploiting the LoS channel properties, our proposed algorithm can achieve a desirable performance with low computational time. Also, our capacity scaling analysis is validated, and the double-IRS system is shown to achieve a much higher rate than its single-IRS counterpart as long as the number of IRS elements or the transmit power is not small. Nonlinear self-interference (SI) cancellation is crucial for eliminating the impact of the transmitter-side nonlinearity on the comprehensive SI cancellation performance in full-duplex radios. However, in the propagation environment with rich reflection paths of signals, the number of the delayed taps required for time-domain nonlinear SI cancellation booms exponentially with the increase of the multi-path number, leading to unacceptable complexity. In this paper, a novel frequency-domain nonlinear SI canceller based on successive interference cancellation (SIC) technique is proposed for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulated full-duplex systems subjected to both transmitter nonlinearity and receiver nonlinearity. The proposed frequency-domain nonlinear SIC (FD-NSIC) cancels nonlinear components one by one via separately estimating the channel frequency response suffered by each order nonlinear component, which significantly relaxes the computational cost. Besides, to avoid the influence of the strong correlation between nonlinear components, orthogonalization is operated before SIC to white basis functions, which accelerates the convergence speed of the proposed FD-NSIC. Simulations are explicitly performed, showing that compared with the conventional frequency-domain nonlinear canceller based on recursive least squares (RLS) channel estimation, the proposed FD-NSIC is capable of canceling the SI to the noise floor with only 52% computational cost under 50 dB interference-to-noise ratio. This paper presents density evolution (DE) techniques based on reciprocal channel approximation (RCA) for general bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) systems. The original RCA-based DE (RCA-DE) technique is implemented under the assumption of binary-input additive white Gaussian noise channels (BI-AWGNCs). In BICM systems, however, $M$ -ary modulation schemes are generally used, and they can be regarded as to be a parallel transmission of $\log _{2} M$ bits. Thus, $\log _{2} M$ separate bit-level channels, which are not Gaussian equivalent, need to be considered. In order to extend the conventional RCA-DE technique to BICM systems, we first establish a model of protograph BICM ensembles. Two methods are developed based on the bit error rate (BER) and the BICM capacity in order to find a corresponding BI-AWGNC that models each of the bit-level channels. Using these methods, we implement the protograph RCA-DE technique for BICM systems and show that it achieves an accurate estimation. As a practical application of the proposed RCA-DE method, we design bit interleavers in order to achieve better BICM performance in the 3GPP New Radio (NR) LDPC coding system. This paper considers a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided millimeter wave (mmWave) downlink communication system where hybrid analog-digital beamforming is employed at the base station (BS). We formulate a power minimization problem by jointly optimizing hybrid beamforming at the BS and the response matrix at the RIS, under the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints at all users. The problem is highly challenging to solve due to the non-convex SINR constraints as well as the unit-modulus phase shift constraints for both the RIS reflection coefficients and the analog beamformer. A two-layer penalty-based algorithm is proposed to decouple variables in SINR constraints, and manifold optimization is adopted to handle the non-convex unit-modulus constraints. We also propose a low-complexity sequential optimization method, which optimizes the RIS reflection coefficients, the analog beamformer, and the digital beamformer sequentially without iteration. Furthermore, the relationship between the power minimization problem and the max-min fairness (MMF) problem is discussed. Simulation results show that the proposed penalty-based algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art semidefinite relaxation (SDR)-based algorithm. In this paper, we study multi-user multi-antenna wireless power transfer (WPT) systems, where each antenna at the energy harvesting (EH) nodes is connected to a dedicated non-linear rectifier. We propose optimal transmit strategies which maximize a weighted sum of the average harvested powers at the EH nodes subject to a constraint on the power budget of the transmitter. First, for multiple-input single-output (MISO) WPT systems, we prove that the optimal strategy employs maximum ratio transmission (MRT) beamforming and scalar symbols with arbitrary phases and discrete amplitudes following a probability density function (pdf) with at most two mass points. Then, we prove that for single-input multiple-output (SIMO) WPT systems, the optimal transmit symbol amplitudes are discrete random variables, whose pdf also has no more than two mass points. For general multi-user MIMO WPT, we show that the optimal transmit strategy employs scalar unit-norm symbols with arbitrary phases and at most two beamforming vectors. To determine these vectors, we formulate a non-convex optimization problem and obtain an optimal solution based on monotonic optimization. Since the computational complexity of the optimal solution is high, we propose a low-complexity iterative algorithm to obtain a suboptimal solution, which achieves near-optimal performance. Our simulation results reveal that the proposed transmit strategy for multi-user MIMO WPT systems outperforms baseline schemes based on a linear EH model and a single beamforming vector. For a given transmit power budget, we show that the harvested power saturates when increasing the number of transmit antennas. Finally, we observe that the harvested power region spanned by multiple EH nodes is convex and the power harvested at one EH node can be traded for a higher harvested power at the other nodes. As larger bandwidths are used in multiple antenna wireless systems, the frequency selectivity of the antenna arrays starts to impact rate. Motivated by optimizing the achievable rate in compact antenna arrays, we present a system model that incorporates the effects of mutual coupling (MC) of wideband physically realizable single-input multiple-output (SIMO) and multiple-input single-output (MISO) antenna systems. For the SIMO system setup, we extract the noise correlation matrices for two different antenna array configurations (parallel and co-linear). We optimize the inter-element spacing in each alignment while maximizing the achievable rate and fixing the transmit power. Then, we compare the two compact antenna designs to a perfectly matched single omni-directional antenna while accounting for MC. Likewise, for the MISO antenna system, we derive the optimal beamformer that maximizes the achievable rate using the same antenna configurations as the SIMO system. Then, we study the impact of MC and develop a new single-port matching technique for wideband antenna arrays. Using ideas from Chu and Bode/Fano theories, we characterize the maximum achievable rate over the single-input single-output wireless communication channels under a restriction on the antenna size at the receiver. By employing circuit-theoretic multiport models for radio communication systems, we derive the information-theoretic limits of compact antennas. We first describe an equivalent Chu’s antenna circuit under the physical realizability conditions of its reflection coefficient. Such a design allows us to subsequently compute the achievable rate for a given receive antenna size thereby providing a physical bound on the system performance that we compare to the standard size-unconstrained Shannon capacity. We also determine the effective signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) which strongly depends on the antenna size and experiences an apparent finite-size performance degradation where only a fraction of Shannon capacity can be achieved. We further determine the optimal signaling bandwidth which shows that impedance matching is essential in both narrowband and broadband scenarios. We also examine the achievable rate in presence of interference showing that the size constraint is immaterial in interference-limited scenarios. Finally, our numerical results of the derived achievable rate as function of the antenna size and the SNR reveal new insights for the physically consistent design of radio systems. The energy efficiency (EE) of femtocells is always limited by the surrounding radio environments in heterogeneous networks (HetNets), such as walls and obstacles. In this paper, we propose to deploy reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) to improve the EE of femtocells. However, perfect channel state information is more difficult to obtain due to the passive characteristics of RISs and non-cooperative relationship between different tiers. Besides, the low-cost transceivers and reflecting units suffer nontrivial hardware impairments (HWIs) due to the hardware limitations of practical systems. To this end, we investigate a realistic robust beamforming design based on max-min fairness for an RIS-aided HetNet under channel uncertainties and residual HWIs. The joint optimization of transmit beamforming vectors of femto base stations (FBSs) and the phase-shift matrices of RISs is formulated as a non-convex problem to maximize the minimum EE of the femtocell subject to the constraints of the maximum transmit power of FBSs, the quality of service of users, and unit modulus phase-shift constraints of RISs. We develop an iterative block coordinate descent-based algorithm which exploits the semi-definite relaxation, the S-procedure, and the singular value decomposition method. Despite the wide utilization of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), UAV communications are susceptible to eavesdropping due to air-ground line-of-sight channels. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is capable of reconfiguring the propagation environment, and thus is an attractive solution for integrating with UAV to facilitate the security in wireless networks. In this paper, we investigate the secure transmission design for an IRS-assisted UAV network in the presence of an eavesdropper. With the aim at maximizing the average secrecy rate, the trajectory of UAV, the transmit beamforming, and the phase shift of IRS are jointly optimized. To address this sophisticated problem, we decompose it into three sub-problems and resort to an iterative algorithm to solve them alternately. First, we derive the closed-form solution to the active beamforming. Then, with the optimal transmit beamforming, the passive beamforming optimization problem of fractional programming is transformed into corresponding parametric sub-problems. Moreover, the successive convex approximation is applied to deal with the non-convex UAV trajectory optimization problem by reformulating a convex problem which serves as a lower bound for the original one. This paper studies the joint estimation of channel fading and user activity for the uplink of a grant-free massive machine-type communication system. Comparing with previous studies, we consider more practical aspects of the system, including non-i.i.d. signature matrices, low-resolution quantization, and random users activated by an unknown sparse rate. A new estimation algorithm, termed hybrid decentralized generalized expectation consistent (HyDeGEC), is then derived based on a hybrid network that applies scalar message passing for the prior inference and vector message passing for the likelihood inference. This new algorithm outperforms many state-of-the-art techniques in terms of robustness (to non-i.i.d. signatures), complexity (in computation per iteration), and/or estimation accuracy (of the channel and the activity rate). The state evolution of the algorithm is also analyzed, which, as validated by simulations, can capture precisely the algorithm’s per-iteration behavior in MSE. In frequency-division duplexing systems, the downlink channel state information (CSI) acquisition scheme leads to high training and feedback overhead. In this work, we propose an uplink-aided downlink channel acquisition framework using deep learning to reduce such overhead. We consider the entire downlink CSI acquisition process, including the downlink pilot design, channel estimation, and feedback. First, we propose an adaptive pilot design module by exploiting the correlation in magnitude among bidirectional channels in the angular domain to improve channel estimation. Second, to avoid the bit allocation problem during the feedback module, we concatenate the complex channel and embed the uplink channel magnitude to the channel reconstruction at the base station. Finally, we combine the two modules and compare two popular uplink-aided downlink channel acquisition frameworks. One framework estimates and subsequently feeds back the channel at the user equipment. In the other framework, the user equipment directly feeds back the received pilot signals to the base station. Results reveal that with the help of the uplink channel, directly feeding back pilot signals can save approximately 20% of feedback bits. This work thus provides a guideline for future research. In this work, we study the outage probability (OP) at the destination of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted communication system in a $\kappa -\mu $ fading environment. A practical system model that takes into account the presence of phase error due to quantization at the IRS when a) source-destination (SD) link is present and b) SD link is absent is considered. First, an exact expression is derived, and then we derive three simple approximations for the OP using the following approaches: (i) uni-variate dimension reduction, (ii) moment matching and, (iii) Kullback–Leibler (KL) divergence minimization. The resulting expressions for OP are simple to evaluate and quite tight even in the tail region. The validity of these approximations is demonstrated using extensive Monte Carlo simulations. We also study the impact of the number of bits available for quantization, the position of IRS with respect to the source and destination and the number of IRS elements on the OP for systems with and without an SD link. We propose an efficient method for designing broad beams with spatially flat array factor and efficient power utilization for cell-specific coverage in communication systems equipped with large antenna arrays. To ensure full power efficiency, the method is restricted to phase-only weight manipulations. Our framework is based on the discovered connection between dual-polarized beamforming and polyphase Golay sequences. Exploiting this connection, we propose several methods for array expansion from smaller to larger sizes, while preserving the radiation pattern. In addition, to fill the gaps in the feasible array sizes, we introduce the concept of $\epsilon $ -complementarity that relaxes the requirement on zero side lobes of the sum aperiodic autocorrelation function of a sequence pair. Furthermore, we develop a modified Great Deluge algorithm (MGDA) that finds $\epsilon $ -complementary pairs of arbitrary length, and hence enables broad beamforming for arbitrarily-sized uniform linear arrays. We also discuss the extension of this approach to two-dimensional uniform rectangular arrays. In this paper, we study the statistical characterization and modeling of distributed multi-reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided wireless systems. Specifically, we consider a practical system model where the RISs with different geometric sizes are distributively deployed, and wireless channels associated to different RISs are assumed to be independent but not identically distributed (i.n.i.d.). We propose two purpose-oriented multi-RIS-aided schemes, namely, the exhaustive RIS-aided (ERA) and opportunistic RIS-aided (ORA) schemes. A mathematical framework, which relies on the method of moments, is proposed to statistically characterize the end-to-end (e2e) channels of these schemes. It is shown that either a Gamma distribution or a Log-Normal distribution can be used to approximate the distribution of the magnitude of the e2e channel coefficients in both schemes. With these findings, we evaluate the performance of the two schemes in terms of outage probability (OP) and ergodic capacity (EC), where tight approximate closed-form expressions for the OP and EC are derived. Representative results show that the ERA scheme outperforms the ORA scheme in terms of OP and EC. In addition, under i.n.i.d. fading channels, the reflecting element settings and location settings of RISs have a significant impact on the system performance of both the ERA or ORA schemes. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) stands out as a promising technology by enhancing the electromagnetic wave propagation environment with its passive reflecting elements. In this paper, we focus on the ergodic sum-rate analysis and maximization of the RIS-assisted uplink multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiple-access channel (MAC) under Rician fading by exploiting full statistical channel state information (CSI). The spatial correlations at the base station, the users, and the RIS are also considered. By using the replica method originated in statistical physics, the closed-form asymptotic ergodic sum-rate of the system is first derived in the large-system regime on the account of the unique channel structure of the RIS-assisted MIMO-MAC system. Then, based on the derived asymptotic ergodic sum-rate, we propose an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm to jointly design the transmit covariance matrix of users and the phase-shifting matrix of RIS with full statistical CSI. Simulation results are also demonstrated to verify the accuracy of the derived asymptotic ergodic sum-rate and the superiority of the proposed AO algorithm. The results reveal that the derived closed-form asymptotic ergodic sum-rate matches very well with the Monte Carlo results even for a small number of antennas, and the proposed AO algorithm can achieve up to 10 bps/Hz gain at high signal-to-noise (SNR) regime, which is therefore valuable for future RIS-assisted MIMO-MAC system designs. The bistatic backscatter architecture, with its extended range, enables flexible deployment opportunities for backscatter devices. In this paper, we study the placement of power beacons (PBs) in bistatic backscatter networks to maximize the guaranteed coverage distance (GCD), defined as the distance from the reader within which backscatter devices are able to satisfy a given quality-of-service constraint. This work departs from conventional energy source placement problems by considering the performance of the additional backscatter link on top of the energy transfer link. We adopt and optimize a symmetric PB placement scheme to maximize the GCD. The optimal PB placement under this scheme is obtained using either analytically tractable expressions or an efficient algorithm. Numerical results provide useful insights into the impacts of various system parameters on the PB placement and the resulting GCD, plus the advantages of the adopted symmetric placement scheme over other benchmark schemes. Hardware impairment is inevitable in many wireless systems. It is particularly severe in low-cost applications due to the imperfect components used. In this paper, the channel estimation and non-coherent detection problems of hardware impaired signals are studied for a single-carrier, single-antenna and single-hop system. Specifically, three different cases are investigated: signals with additive distortion only, signals with in-phase and quadrature imbalance only, and signals with both impairments. The maximum likelihood and Gaussian approximation methods are used to derive the new non-coherent detectors for amplitude modulated signals, while the maximum likelihood and moment-based methods are employed to design the new channel estimators for all signals. Numerical results show that the new non-coherent detectors outperform the existing non-coherent detectors in the presence of hardware impairment. The performance gain can be as high as 8 dB. They also show that the new channel estimators have much higher accuracy than the existing estimator. This paper investigates robust and secure multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) downlink communications assisted by a self-sustainable intelligent reflection surface (IRS), which can simultaneously reflect and harvest energy from the received signals. We study the joint design of beamformers at an access point (AP) and the phase shifts as well as the energy harvesting schedule at the IRS for maximizing the system sum-rate. The design is formulated as a non-convex optimization problem taking into account the wireless energy harvesting capability of IRS elements, secure communications, and the robustness against the impact of channel state information (CSI) imperfection. Subsequently, we propose a computationally-efficient iterative algorithm to obtain a suboptimal solution to the design problem. In each iteration, $\mathcal {S}$ -procedure and the successive convex approximation are adopted to handle the intermediate optimization problem. Our simulation results unveil that: 1) there is a non-trivial trade-off between the system sum-rate and the self-sustainability of the IRS; 2) the performance gain achieved by the proposed scheme is saturated with a large number of energy harvesting IRS elements; 3) an IRS equipped with small bit-resolution discrete phase shifters is sufficient to achieve a considerable system sum-rate of the ideal case with continuous phase shifts. This paper considers the downlink of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (CNOMA) systems. Our objective is to minimize the total transmit power by jointly optimizing the active beamforming vectors, transmit-relaying power, and RIS phase shifts. The formulated problem is a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem. To tackle this problem, the alternating optimization approach is utilized to decouple the variables. In each alternative procedure, the optimal solutions for the active beamforming vectors, transmit-relaying power and phase shifts are obtained. However, the proposed algorithm has high complexity since the optimal phase shifts are solved by integer linear programming (ILP) whose computational complexity is exponential in the number of variables. To strike a good computational complexity-optimality trade-off, a low-complexity suboptimal algorithm is proposed by adopting the iterative penalty function based semidefinite programming (SDP) and the successive refinement approaches. Numerical results illustrate that: i) the proposed RIS-CNOMA system, aided by our proposed algorithms, outperforms the conventional CNOMA system. ii) the proposed low-complexity suboptimal algorithm can achieve near-optimal performance. iii) whether the RIS-CNOMA system outperforms the RIS assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (RIS-NOMA) system depends not only on the users’ locations but also on the RIS’s location. In this paper, we investigate the uplink communication of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted system, in which an user equipment (UE) with single radio frequency (RF) chain delivers information to an access point (AP) by adopting the spatial modulation (SM). Specifically, we first investigate the transmit SM (TSM) scheme and jointly optimize the UE’s power allocation matrix and the RIS reflection coefficients to enhance the system reliability. We formulate a non-convex optimization problem to reduce the system symbol-error-rate (SER) and propose a novel penalty-alternative optimizing algorithm to obtain a near-optimal solution. Following this, we show that with the assistant of RIS, receive SM (RSM) scheme can also be performed even if the UE has only one RF chain. Based on this observation, a novel RIS-assisted RSM scheme is proposed, which can provide a low cost and complexity solution for system realization. The reflection coefficients of the RIS are also optimized for the proposed RSM. Numerical results show that the RIS-assisted TSM can achieve a lower SER than the conventional communication scheme (CTS) without SM and the proposed RSM scheme has lower detection complexity than that of CTS. It is also shown that the performance of the TSM and RSM schemes is more sensitive to the quantization accuracy of the phase of the RIS coefficients than that of the amplitude. Symbiotic radio (SR) is a promising technology for energy- and spectrum-efficient wireless communication, which exploits passive communication for Internet-of-Things (IoT) transmission and achieves a mutualistic spectrum sharing between the passive and active transmissions. In this paper, we study an reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) empowered symbiotic radio over a broadcasting system, i.e., a base station (BS) broadcasts signals to multiple primary receivers (PRs) under the assistance of an RIS, while the RIS also transmits information to an IoT receiver (IR) by riding over the broadcasting signals. We formulate a problem to minimize the BS’s transmit power by jointly optimizing the BS’s active precoding and the RIS’s passive beamforming, under the signal-to-noise-ratio constraints of the primary and IoT transmissions. However, the problem is challenging to be solved optimally, since the variables are coupled and the constraints are non-convex. An iterative algorithm based on block coordinated descent (BCD) and semidefinite relaxation (SDR) techniques is first proposed, and its convergence together with complexity are analyzed. Then, to tackle the problem of high computational complexity caused by SDR technique, we further propose an alternative algorithm based on generalized power method (GPM) technique. Simulation results validate that the proposed system outperforms the traditional broadcasting system without RIS. The GPM-based algorithm achieves nearly the same transmit power performance as SDR-based algorithm, with a significantly reduced computational complexity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we devise a highly efficient machine learning-based channel estimation for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, in which the training of the estimator is performed online. A simple learning module is employed for the proposed learning-based estimator. The training process is thus much faster and the required training data is reduced significantly. Besides, a training data construction approach utilizing least square (LS) estimation results is proposed so that the training data can be collected during the data transmission. The feasibility of this novel construction approach is verified by theoretical analysis and simulations. Based on this construction approach, two alternative training data generation schemes are proposed. One scheme transmits additional block pilot symbols to create training data, while the other scheme adopts a decision-directed method and does not require extra pilot overhead. Simulation results show the robustness of the proposed channel estimation method. Furthermore, the proposed method shows better adaptation to practical imperfections compared with the conventional minimum mean-square error (MMSE) channel estimation.
