The identification of nonlinear dynamic systems using radial basis function (RBF) neural models is studied in this paper. Given a model selection criterion, the main objective is to effectively and efficiently build a parsimonious compact neural model that generalizes well over unseen data. This is achieved by simultaneous model structure selection and optimization of the parameters over the continuous parameter space. It is a mixed-integer hard problem, and a unified analytic framework is proposed to enable an effective and efficient two-stage mixed discrete-continuous identification procedure. This novel framework combines the advantages of an iterative discrete two-stage subset selection technique for model structure determination and the calculus-based continuous optimization of the model parameters. Computational complexity analysis and simulation studies confirm the efficacy of the proposed algorithm. This paper is concerned with the global asymptotic stability of a class of Cohen-Grossberg neural networks with both multiple time-varying delays and continuously distributed delays. Two classes of amplification functions are considered, and some sufficient stability criteria are established to ensure the global asymptotic stability of the concerned neural networks, which can be expressed in the form of linear matrix inequality and are easy to check. Furthermore, some sufficient conditions guaranteeing the global robust stability are also established in the case of parameter uncertainties. In this paper, first, we investigate the CNN templates producing periodic patterns. Next, two image processing algorithms using periodic pattern formation in cellular neural networks are proposed. By applying one to a certain image, area having spatial uniformity is removed from the original image and only parts without spatial uniformity remain. Simulation results show that when this algorithm is applied to an image containing characters (texts) or a human face image, only characters or eyes and mouth are extracted. Also, by applying the other to texture image, periodicity is enhanced in area having spatial periodicity, and texture can be segmented. Simulation results show that when this algorithm is applied to image that consists of four kinds of textures, each texture area can be segmented. A novel artificial neural network (NN)-based technique is proposed for enabling smart sensors to operate in harsh environments. The NN-based sensor model automatically linearizes and compensates for the adverse effects arising due to nonlinear response characteristics and nonlinear dependency of the sensor characteristics on the environmental variables. To show the potential of the proposed NN-based technique, we have provided results of a smart capacitive pressure sensor (CPS) operating under a wide range of temperature variation. A multilayer perceptron is utilized to transfer the nonlinear CPS characteristics at any operating temperature to a linearized response characteristics. Through extensive simulated experiments, we have shown that the NN-based CPS model can provide pressure readout with a maximum full-scale error of only [+ or -] 1.5% over a temperature range of -50 to 200 [degrees]C with excellent linearized response for all the three forms of nonlinear dependencies considered. Performance of the proposed technique is compared with a recently proposed computationally efficient NN-based extreme learning machine. The proposed multilayer perceptron based model is tested by using experimentally measured real sensor data, and found to have satisfactory performance. In this paper, we show how a cellular nonlinear network with 1-bit weight programmability can be used for processing black and white image data. When using such a binary-programmable network, some templates need to be processed algorithmically, in other words, divided into subtasks that are processed consecutively. We classify templates into groups based on their properties and give guidelines as to how the division into subtasks (when applicable) is performed. A large collection of templates suitable for the proposed model is shown. We also describe one possible cell structure that realizes the binary-programmable model. The cell is modeled with Matlab and selected template simulations are shown. In this paper, a biologically inspired, CNN-based, multi-channel, texture boundary detection technique is presented. The proposed approach is similar to human vision system. The algorithm is simple and straightforward such that it can be implemented on the cellular neural networks (CNNs). CNN contains several important advantages, such as efficient real-time processing capability and feasible very large-scale integration (VLSI) implementation. The proposed algorithm also had been widely tested on synthetic texture images. Those texture images are randomly selected from the Brodatz textures database [1]. According to our simulation results, the boundaries of uniform textures can be detected quite successfully. For the nonuniform or nonregular textures, the results also indicate meaningful properties, and the properties also are consistent to the human visual sensation. The proposed algorithm also has been implemented on the CNN Universal Machine (CNN-UM), and yields similar results as the simulation on the PC. Based on the efficient performance of CNN-UM, the algorithm becomes very fast. Index Terms--Cellular neural networks (CNNs), early vision system, Gabor filter, retinex model, texture segregation.

The paper considers the full-range (FR) model of cellular neural networks (CNNs) in the case where the neuron nonlinearities are ideal hard-comparator functions with two vertical straight segments. The dynamics of FR-CNNs, which is described by a differential inclusion, is rigorously analyzed by means of theoretical tools from set-valued analysis and differential inclusions. The fundamental property proved in the paper is that FR-CNNs are equivalent to a special class of differential inclusions termed differential variational inequalities. A sound foundation to the dynamics of FR-CNNs is then given by establishing the existence and uniqueness of the solution starting at a given point, and the existence of equilibrium points. Moreover, a fundamental result on trajectory convergence towards equilibrium points (complete stability) for reciprocal standard CNNs is extended to reciprocal FR-CNNs by using a generalized Lyapunov approach. As a consequence, it is shown that the study of the ideal case with vertical straight segments in the neuron nonlinearities is able to give a clear picture and analytic characterization of the salient features of motion, such as the sliding modes along the boundary of the hypercube defined by the hard-comparator nonlinearities. Finally, it is proved that the solutions of the ideal FR model are the uniform limit as the slope tends to infinity of the solutions of a model where the vertical segments in the nonlinearities are approximated by segments with finite slope. In this paper, two related problems, global asymptotic stability (GAS) and global robust stability (GRS) of neural networks with time delays, are studied. First, GAS of delayed neural networks is discussed based on Lyapunov method and linear matrix inequality. New criteria are given to ascertain the GAS of delayed neural networks. In the designs and applications of neural networks, it is necessary to consider the deviation effects of bounded perturbations of network parameters. In this case, a delayed neural network must be formulated as a interval neural network model. Several sufficient conditions are derived for the existence, uniqueness, and GRS of equilibria for interval neural networks with time delays by use of a new Lyapunov function and matrix inequality. These results are less restrictive than those given in the earlier references.
