Human detection is one of the long-standing computer vision tasks, and it has been a cornerstone for many real-world applications, such as photo album organization, video surveillance, and autonomous driving. Benefiting from deep learning technologies, such as convolutional neural networks and modern object detectors, have been achieving much improved accuracy in generic object detection tasks. In this paper, we aim to improve deep learning-based human detection. Our main idea is to exploit semantic context information for human detection by using deep-learnt semantic features provided by semantic segmentation masks. Segmentation masks play as an attention mechanism and enforce the detectors to focus on the image regions where potential object candidates are likely to appear. Meanwhile, the extra segmentation mask channel can also guide the convolutional kernels to automatically learn more discriminative features which make it easier to distinguish the background and foreground. We implement our methods with two popular detection frameworks, i.e., faster R-CNN and SSD and experimentally analyze the effectiveness of the proposed methods. Evaluation results on the widely used MS-COCO dataset and the very recent CrowdHuman dataset are provided. Crowd counting is an important task in computer vision, which has many applications in video surveillance. Although the regression-based framework has achieved great improvements for crowd counting, how to improve the discriminative power of image representation is still an open problem. Conventional holistic features used in crowd counting often fail to capture semantic attributes and spatial cues of the image. In this paper, we propose integrating semantic information into learning locality-aware feature (LAF) sets for accurate crowd counting. First, with the help of a convolutional neural network, the original pixel space is mapped onto a dense attribute feature map, where each dimension of the pixelwise feature indicates the probabilistic strength of a certain semantic class. Then, LAF built on the idea of spatial pyramids on neighboring patches is proposed to explore more spatial context and local information. Finally, the traditional vector of locally aggregated descriptor (VLAD) encoding method is extended to a more generalized form weighted-VLAD (W-VLAD) in which diverse coefficient weights are taken into consideration. Abstract-Efficiently and accurately detecting pedestrians plays a very important role in many computer vision applications such as video surveillance and smart cars. In order to find the right feature for this task, we first present a comprehensive experimental study on pedestrian detection using state-of-the-art locally extracted features (e.g., local receptive fields, histogram of oriented gradients, and region covariance). Building upon the findings of our experiments, we propose a new, simpler pedestrian detector using the covariance features. Unlike the work in [1], where the feature selection and weak classifier training are performed on the Riemannian manifold, we select features and train weak classifiers in the Euclidean space for faster computation. To this end, AdaBoost with weighted Fisher linear discriminant analysis-based weak classifiers are designed. A cascaded classifier structure is constructed for efficiency in the detection phase. Experiments on different datasets prove that the new pedestrian detector is not only comparable to the state-of-the-art pedestrian detectors but it also performs at a faster speed. To further accelerate the detection, we adopt a faster strategy-multiple layer boosting with heterogeneous features-to exploit the efficiency of the Haar feature and the discriminative power of the covariance feature. Experiments show that, by combining the Haar and covariance features, we speed up the original covariance feature detector [1] by up to an order of magnitude in detection time with a slight drop in detection performance. In this paper, we propose a semantics-aware visual object tracking method, which introduces semantics into the tracking procedure and extends the model of an object with explicit semantics prior to enhancing the robustness of three key aspects of the tracking framework, i.e., appearance model, search scheme, and scale adaptation. We first present a semantic object proposal generation method for video sequences to generate high-quality category-oriented object proposals. Then, a hybrid semantics-aware tracking algorithm with semantic compatibility is proposed. This algorithm takes full advantages of globally sparse semantic object proposal prediction and locally dense prediction with a template model and semantic distractor-aware color appearance model. Furthermore, we propose to exploit semantics to localize object accurately via an energy minimization framework-based scale adaptation method, which jointly integrates dense location prior, instance-specific color, and category-specific semantic information. Depth estimation from single monocular images is a key component in scene understanding. Most existing algorithms formulate depth estimation as a regression problem due to the continuous property of depths. However, the depth value of input data can hardly be regressed exactly to the ground-truth value. In this paper, we propose to formulate depth estimation as a pixelwise classification task. Specifically, we first discretize the continuous ground-truth depths into several bins and label the bins according to their depth ranges. Then, we solve the depth estimation problem as classification by training a fully convolutional deep residual network. Compared with estimating the exact depth of a single point, it is easier to estimate its depth range. More importantly, by performing depth classification instead of regression, we can easily obtain the confidence of a depth prediction in the form of probability distribution. With this confidence, we can apply an information gain loss to make use of the predictions that are close to ground-truth during training, as well as fully-connected conditional random fields for post-processing to further improve the performance. Compared with other applications in computer vision, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have underperformed on pedestrian detection. A breakthrough was made very recently using sophisticated deep CNN (DCNN) models, with a number of handcrafted features or explicit occlusion handling mechanism. In this paper, we show that by reusing the convolutional feature maps of a DCNN model as image features to train an ensemble of boosted decision models, we are able to achieve the best reported accuracy without using specially designed learning algorithms. We empirically identify and disclose important implementation details. We also show that pixel labeling may be simply combined with a detector to boost the detection performance. By adding complementary handcrafted features such as optical flow, the DCNN-based detector can be further improved. We advance the state-of-the-art results by lowering the log-average miss rate from 11.7% to 8.9% on the Caltech data set and from 11.2% to 8.6% on the Inria data set. Encouraged by the success of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in image classification, recently much effort is spent on applying the CNNs to the video-based action recognition problems. One challenge is that a video contains a varying number of frames, which is incompatible to the standard input format of the CNNs. Existing methods handle this issue either by directly sampling a fixed number of frames or bypassing this issue by introducing a 3D convolutional layer, which conducts convolution in spatial-temporal domain. In this paper, we propose a novel network structure, which allows an arbitrary number of frames as the network input. The key to our solution is to introduce a module consisting of an encoding layer and a temporal pyramid pooling layer. The encoding layer maps the activation from the previous layers to a feature vector suitable for pooling, whereas the temporal pyramid pooling layer converts multiple frame-level activations into a fixed-length video-level representation. In addition, we adopt a feature concatenation layer that combines the appearance and motion information. Compared with the frame sampling strategy, our method avoids the risk of missing any important frames. Compared with the 3D convolutional method, which requires a huge video data set for network training, our model can be learned on a small target data set because we can leverage the off-the-shelf image-level CNN for model parameter initialization. In this paper, we introduce the idea of blockwise classification to count objects. The current mainstream method for counting objects is to regress the density map or to regress the redundant count map via a deep convolutional neural network (CNN). However, these methods suffer from two critical issues: inaccurately generated regression targets and serious sample imbalances. First, the ground truth density map is generated by convolving the dot map using a Gaussian kernel. Because an inappropriate kernel can cover the background or uncover objects, this approach introduces a form of noise, and therefore results in ambiguities when training the networks. Second, inhomogeneously distributed objects often exist in images, which gives rise to a data collection bias. This leads to a long-tailed distribution of region counts, which is a typical characteristic that occurs with imbalanced samples; therefore, underestimations in high-density regions and overestimations in low-density regions are common. In this paper, we address these two issues within one framework—blockwise count level classification. The intuition behind this idea is that while it may not be possible to provide an exact count of pixels or patches, it is possible to provide a count of a region that falls within a certain interval with high confidence. Our method classifies the count levels of each block produced by nonlinearly quantizing the continuous counts, thus transforming the imbalance of sample patch counts into a class imbalance of count levels. Consequently, an information-entropy-inspired loss can be applied to alleviate this issue. Through ablative studies, we analyze the impact of imbalanced data, Gaussian kernel sizes, quantization errors, and the effectiveness of each module in our method. Without bells and whistles, our method outperforms or performs competitively with other state-of-the-art approaches on seven object-counting benchmarks, including four crowd-counting datasets from ShanghaiTech, WorldExpo’10, UCF-QNRF and UCF_CC_50, one vehicle-counting dataset (TRANCOS), one maize-tassel-counting dataset (MTC), and one challenging sonar fish-counting dataset that we constructed. Most existing algorithms for depth estimation from single monocular images need large quantities of metric ground-truth depths for supervised learning. We show that relative depth can be an informative cue for metric depth estimation and can be easily obtained from vast stereo videos. Acquiring metric depths from stereo videos are sometimes impracticable due to the absence of camera parameters. In this paper, we propose to improve the performance of metric depth estimation with relative depths collected from stereo movie videos using existing stereo matching algorithm. We introduce a new “relative depth in stereo” (RDIS) dataset densely labeled with relative depths. We first pretrain a ResNet model on our RDIS dataset. Then, we finetune the model on RGB-D datasets with metric ground-truth depths. During our finetuning, we formulate depth estimation as a classification task. This re-formulation scheme enables us to obtain the confidence of a depth prediction in the form of probability distribution. With this confidence, we propose an information gain loss to make use of the predictions that are close to ground-truth. Edge-preserving smoothing is a fundamental procedure for many computer vision and graphic applications. This can be achieved with either local methods or global methods. In most cases, global methods can yield superior performance over the local ones. However, local methods usually run much faster than the global ones. In this paper, we propose a new global method that embeds the bilateral filter (BLF) in the least squares (LS) model for efficient edge-preserving smoothing. The proposed method can show comparable performance with the state-of-the-art global method. Meanwhile, since the proposed method can take advantages of the efficiency of the BLF and the LS model, it runs much faster. In addition, we show the flexibility of our method which can be easily extended by replacing the BLF with its variants. They can be further modified to handle more applications.
