In this paper, simple methodologies of deep learning application to conventional multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems are presented. The deep learning technologies with deep neural network (DNN) structure, emerging technologies in various engineering areas, have been actively investigated in the field of communication engineering as well. In the physical layer of conventional communication systems, there are practical challenges of application of DNN: calculating complex number in DNN and designing proper DNN structure for a specific communication system model. This paper proposes and verifies simple solutions for the difficulty. First, we apply a basic DNN structure for signal detection of one-tap MIMO channel. Second, convolutional neural network (CNN) and recurrent neural network (RNN) structures are presented for MIMO system with multipath fading channel. Our DNN structure for one-tap MIMO channel can achieve the optimal maximum likelihood detection performance, and furthermore, our CNN and RNN structures for multipath fading channel can detect the transmitted signal properly. To solve practical challenges for implementing deep learning-based algorithm in MIMO signal detector such as handling complex number or designing proper neural network for a specific communication system, (Baek et al., 2019) has proposed candidate implementation methodologies with simple verification experiments. According to (Baek et al., 2019), it was shown that the proposed algorithms can achieve the optimal ML performance. However, due to the lack of explanation on the experimental environment, it is difficult for readers to reproduce the presented experiments and obtain the same results. Ambient backscatter (AB) communication enables the backscatter devices to modulate and transmit data by reflecting surrounding digital video broadcasting (DVB) signals, and has emerged as a promising solution to connect low-power and small-sized devices in Internet of Things (IoT). Unfortunately, the AB receiver may suffer from the strong direct-link interference (DLI) transmitted from the ambient DVB station, making it difficult to decode the backscattered signal (BS) directly. In this paper, to tackle this issue, we propose a DLI cancellation method for AB communications over ambient DVB signals. First, a general signal processing operation for DLI cancellation at the AB receiver is designed, where neither special design on waveform nor cooperation between the ambient DVB station and the backscatter transceiver is required. Then, by minimizing the residual reception power after DLI cancellation, a three-layer parameter searching algorithm is proposed to separate the BS from the ambient DVB signal, which is of low implementation complexity. Simulation results show that when the DLI-to-BS ratio (ISR) is greater than 30 dB, the proposed DLI cancellation method can effectively suppress the DLI at the AB receiver, and the demodulation and capacity performance of the ambient DVB transmission and the backscatter transmission are barely deteriorated, as compared with the scenarios of original DVB transmission without BS and pure backscatter transmission without DLI. This paper presents an alternative approach to real-valued signal representation and proposes an improved successive interference cancellation (SIC)-based detection scheme using the alternative signal representation for non-uniform constellations (NUCs) in Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0. Since I/Q polarization interleaving in ATSC 3.0 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) precoding performs a non-linear operation, it makes it difficult to use conventional suboptimal detection schemes based on interference cancellation. Therefore, the alternative signal representation is designed to easily apply various suboptimal detection schemes. Further, to obtain more robustness and lower complexity, a suboptimal detection scheme based on the alternative signal representation and interference cancellation with QR decomposition is proposed. The proposed detection scheme exploits the structural properties of NUCs and jointly detects the real and imaginary parts as a block. In addition, by considering one or more candidate symbols in the interference cancellation for the proposed detection scheme, the performance and the complexity are trade-offs according to the number of the considering candidate symbols. Simulation results show that the proposed detection scheme with a slight increase of the complexity significantly outperforms a linear detection under fixed and mobile channels. Electronically steerable parasitic array radiator (ESPAR) antenna is a novel low-cost technique to gain comparable diversity order to that of using multiple antennas while maintaining one radio frequency (RF) front-end, low power consumption, and simple wiring at the mobile receiver. It has huge potential to realize high energy efficiency for multiple and massive antennas systems. The main drawback of the ESPAR based OFDM system is that the channel estimation (CE) usually should be realized in time-domain with a huge computational complexity (CC) because the received signal to each parasitic element is overlapped each other both in frequency and time domain. This article will propose three ways to reduce the complexity of CE for the ESPAR-OFDM system. The parallel multi-column compressive sensing (CS) algorithm was first introduced to detect all locations of channel impulse response simultaneously using one small segment of sensing matrix. Furthermore, by exploiting the symmetrical properties of Digital Fourier transform (DFT), the size of matrix to decrease the CC of matrix operation. Finally, by selecting a small set of row vectors of sensing matrix at the receiver side, the CC involved in CS algorithm can be reduced. From the analysis and simulated results, the proposed method can obtain more than 90% CC reduction for CE of ESPAR-OFDM receiver can be confirmed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The outage performance of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique has received intense attention in order to ensure the ultra-reliability requirement for broadcasting systems. In this article, the outage probability at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is asymptotically studied for MIMO channels to thoroughly investigate the transmission reliability. To fully capture the spatial correlation effects, the MIMO fading channel matrix is modelled according to three types of Kronecker correlation structure, i.e., independent, semi-correlated and full-correlated Rayleigh MIMO channels. The outage probabilities under all three Kronecker models are expressed as weighted sum representations of generalized Fox’s H functions. The tractable results empower the asymptotic outage analyses, which are conducted not only to reveal helpful insights into understanding the behavior of fading effects, but also to offer useful design guideline for MIMO configurations. Particularly, the asymptotic outage probability is proved to be a monotonically increasing and convex function of the transmission rate. In the absence of the channel state information (CSI), the transmitter tends to equally allocate the total transmit power among its antennas to enhance the reception reliability especially in high SNR regime. For multi-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MU-MIMO) system, transmitter utilizes a pre-equalizer based precoding to cancel inter-stream interference for parallel transmission with the aid of accurate feedback of channel state information (CSI) from all receivers. The correct power scaling factor, which normalizes the symbols power of precoding to be a constant one, is required at each receiver. Due to CSI error and limitation of feed-forward link, the received inaccurate power scaling factor will shrink or expand the received constellation points which severely degrades the performance of MIMO system. In this paper, using nonlinear vector perturbation (VP) and linear zero-forcing (ZF) precoding, we analyze the impact of inaccurate power scaling factor on the performance of a MIMO precoding system. The analyzed results show that the mismatched modulo size from inaccurate power scaling factor severely degrades the performance of the VP system, especially for high order M-QAM modulation. In addition, the performance degradation is strongly related with the distribution of representation points for each M-QAM symbol. For linear ZF precoding, the performance loss from the shrinked or expanded constellation points is severe for system using high order M-QAM. In addition, to alleviate the performance degradation, we propose a VP system using partial perturbation points (PPP). By limiting the region of redundant points with vector perturbation for partial M-QAM symbols, the performance degradation due to the inaccurate power scaling factor can be alleviated. Computer generated holograms represent a novel digital media that with adequate processing tools and the advance of holographic display technologies will foster the development of true immersive video technologies applications. A digital hologram typically conveys a considerable amount of data making compression and image quality evaluation tools necessary for the development of practical applications. This paper proposes an objective evaluation of the performances of state-of-the-art compression techniques applied to digital holographic data. The experimental analysis takes into account several holographic images reconstructing the holograms from different perspectives and distances. The results of the exploratory study are reported, discussed and complemented with a statistical analysis of the hologram data under test, providing insights for computer-generated holography compression techniques design. Compressed sensing (CS) is one of the hottest research topics in the sparse signal reconstruction problem. But CS implementation has a drawback of high computational complexity due to calculation between large size of matrices. In this paper, we will propose a low-complexity CS hardware realization for channel estimation in the integrated services digital broadcasting-terrestrial (ISDB-T) system using several optimization methods to reduce the implementation complexity of CS usage. Since the ISDB-T is based on orthogonal frequency division and multiplexing system, the measurement matrix of CS computation is a truncated discrete Fourier transform (DFT) matrix. We can exploit the symmetrical property of this DFT matrix to significantly reduce its multiplication complexity and random access memory usage. To achieve fast reconstruction period, this paper also provides a hardware architecture for the proposed method and its realization in field programmable gate array. The simulation results show that the proposed methods can achieve lower complexity CS-based channel estimation with almost the identical system performance with the conventional method. The digital video broadcasting—second generation terrestrial (DVB-T2) standard has adopted a preamble called P1 symbol to achieve the fast time and frequency synchronization. The P1 symbol also carries basic transmission parameters of DVB-T2 system, such as fast Fourier transform size, guard interval size and transmission type—single input single output or multiple input single output, etc. In this paper, we propose an improved preamble which is modulated by a novel hybrid differential modulation scheme that can provide transmit diversity gain to achieve the same performance of coherent transmission. The proposed preamble has demonstrated a significantly improved signaling error rate performance over various channel conditions compared to the conventional P1 symbol in DVB-T2.
