In this note, a novel conception called virtual clock, which is defined by an artificial timer over a finite cycle, is introduced for stability analysis of discrete-time switched linear systems under minimum dwell-time constraint. Two necessary and sufficient conditions associated with a virtual clock with a sufficient length are proposed to ensure the global uniform asymptotic stability of discrete-time switched linear systems. For the two nonconservative stability criteria, the lifted version maintains the convexity in system matrices. Based on the lifted convex conditions, the extensions to $\ell _2$ -gain computation and $\mathcal {H}_\infty$ control problems are presented in the sequel. In particular, a novel virtual-clock-dependent controller is designed, which outperforms the traditional mode-dependent and common gain controllers. Inspired by the idea of multiple Lyapunov functions ($\mathtt {MLFs}$), we use piecewise continuous scalar functions to investigate the stabilizability of time-varying switched systems. Starting with time-varying switched linear systems, we first combine the idea of $\mathtt {MLFs}$ with the existence of asymptotically (exponentially, uniformly exponentially) stable functions to provide necessary and sufficient conditions for their asymptotic (exponential, uniform exponential) stabilizability. Compared to traditional differential Lyapunov inequalities, we release the requirement on negative definiteness of the derivatives of $\mathtt {MLFs}$. Successively, the above results are extended to time-varying switched nonlinear systems. Then, two illustrative examples are given to show the applicability of our theoretical results. In this note, we study the stabilization problem of positive switched linear system (PSLS) with disturbance. By introducing a class of weak common linear copositive Lyapunov functions, we design time-dependent switching rules under which the system is asymptotically stable. Both continuous-time and discrete-time PSLS are taken into consideration, and the obtained results are also extended to nonpositive switched systems. This technical note establishes a novel result for adaptive asymptotic tracking control of uncertain switched linear systems. The result exploits a recently proposed stability condition for switched systems. In particular, a time-varying positive definite Lyapunov function is used to develop a novel piecewise continuous model-reference adaptive law and a dwell-time switching law. In contrast with previous research, where asymptotic tracking was possible only in the presence of a common Lyapunov function for the reference models, in this work asymptotic tracking is shown in a more general setting. Additionally, in the presence of persistence of excitation, the controller parameter estimation errors will converge to zero asymptotically. The main contribution of this work consists in establishing a symmetry between adaptive control of classical non-switched linear systems and adaptive control of switched linear systems. This paper introduces the notion of common zeroing-output systems (CZOS) to analyze the stability of switched systems. The concept of CZOS allows one to verify weak zero-state detectability. It characterizes a common behavior of any individual subsystem when the output signal for each subsystem is “approaching” zero. Heuristically speaking, it removes the effect of switching behavior, and thus enables one to analyze stability properties in systems with complex switching signals. With the help of CZOS, the Krasovskii–LaSalle theorem can be extended to switched nonlinear time-varying systems with both arbitrary switching and more general restricted switching cases. For switched nonlinear time-invariant systems, the needed detectability condition is further simplified, leading to several new stability results. Particularly, when a switched linear time-invariant system is considered, it is possible to generate a recursive method, which combines a Krasovskii–LaSalle result and a nested Matrosov result, to find a CZOS if it exists. We show that existence of a global polynomial Lyapunov function for a homogeneous polynomial vector field or a planar polynomial vector field (under a mild condition) implies existence of a polynomial Lyapunov function that is a sum of squares (sos) and that the negative of its derivative is also a sum of squares. This result is extended to show that such sos-based certificates of stability are guaranteed to exist for all stable switched linear systems. For this class of systems, we further show that if the derivative inequality of the Lyapunov function has an sos certificate, then the Lyapunov function itself is automatically a sum of squares. These converse results establish cases where semidefinite programming is guaranteed to succeed in finding proofs of Lyapunov inequalities. Finally, we demonstrate some merits of replacing the sos requirement on a polynomial Lyapunov function with an sos requirement on its top homogeneous component. In this work, we study the stability of an autonomous discrete-time linear switched system whose switching sequences are generated by a Muller automaton. This system arises in various engineering problems such as distributed communication and automotive engine control. The asymptotic stability of this system, referred to as regular asymptotic stability (RAS), generalizes two well-known definitions of stability of autonomous discrete-time linear switched systems, namely absolute asymptotic stability (AAS) and shuffle asymptotic stability (SAS). We also extend these stability definitions to robust versions. We show that absolute asymptotic stability, robust absolute asymptotic stability and robust shuffle asymptotic stability are equivalent to exponential stability. In addition, by using the Kronecker product, we prove that a robust regular asymptotic stability problem is equivalent to the conjunction of several robust absolute asymptotic stability problems. In this technical note, a necessary and sufficient stability criterion for switched linear systems under dwell-time constraint is proposed by employing a class of time-scheduled homogeneous polynomial Lyapunov functions with a sufficiently large degree. The key feature of this nonconservative condition lies in its convexity in the system matrices, which explicitly facilitates its further extension to uncertain systems. Then, in order to obtain numerically testable condition, a family of LMI conditions are presented with the aid of the idea of dividing the dwell-time interval into a finite number of segments. It is proved that the non-conservativeness can be maintained with a sufficiently large interval dividing parameter. In the end, the result is straightforwardly extended to the uncertain case in virtue of the convexity in the system matrices. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate our findings. In this note, the stabilization problem for a class of discrete-time switched linear systems with additive disturbances is investigated. The considered switching signals are of mode-dependent persistent dwell-time (MPDT) property and the disturbances are assumed to be amplitude-bounded. By constructing a quasi-time-varying (QTV) Lyapunov function, a QTV stabilizing controller is designed for the nominal system such that the resulting closed-loop system is globally uniformly asymptotically stable. In the presence of bounded additive disturbances, a MPDT robust positive invariant set is determined for the error system between the nominal system and disturbed system. A concept of generalized robust positive invariant (GRPI) set under admissible MPDT switching is further proposed for the error system. It is demonstrated that the disturbed system is also asymptotically stable in the sense of converging to the MPDT GRPI set that can be regarded as the cross section of a uniform tube of the disturbed system. We investigate the stabilizability of switched linear systems of differential-algebraic equations (DAEs). For such systems we introduce a parameterized family of switched ordinary differential equations that approximate the dynamic behavior of the switched DAE. A necessary and sufficient criterion for the stabilizability of a switched DAE system using time-dependent switching is obtained in terms of these parameterized approximations. Furthermore, we provide conditions for the stabilizability of switched DAEs via fast switching as well as using solely the consistency projectors of the constituent systems. This article deals with stability of continuous-time switched systems under constrained switching. Given a family of systems, possibly containing unstable dynamics, we characterize a new class of switching signals under which the switched system generated by it and the family of systems is globally asymptotically stable. Our characterization of such stabilizing switching signals involves the asymptotic frequency of switching, the asymptotic fraction of activation of the constituent systems, and the asymptotic densities of admissible transitions among them. In this technical note, the problem of switching stabilization for slowly switched linear systems is investigated. In particular, the considered systems can be composed of all unstable subsystems. Based on the invariant subspace theory, the switching signal with mode-dependent average dwell time (MDADT) property is designed to exponentially stabilize the underlying system. Furthermore, sufficient condition of stabilization for switched systems with all stable subsystems under MDADT switching is also given.
