This article investigates the event-triggered control problem for switched affine systems (SASs). The presence of affine terms brings many difficulties on the exclusion of triggering Zeno behavior when ensuring asymptotic stability. We propose an event-triggered control strategy dynamically updated with triggering to solve this problem, in which the triggering condition is associated with the affine terms and given with a time-varying term that is updated at triggering instants. Based on the triggering strategy, the controllers for subsystems and a switching rule are designed to achieve asymptotic stability of the resulting closed-loop system. Moreover, due to the special feature of event-triggered SASs, a new method for proving the exclusion of Zeno behavior is given. This article investigates the stability of continuous-time switched linear systems with dwell-time constraints. A fresh insight into this established problem is provided via novel stability conditions that require the solution to a family of differential Lyapunov equations and algebraic Lyapunov equations. The proposed analysis, which leads to a peculiar Lyapunov function that is decreasing in between and at switching instants, enjoys the following properties: it achieves the same dwell time as the well-known result in the research “stability and stabilization of continuous time switched linear systems” by Geromel and Colaneri; it removes the increasing computational complexity of the linear interpolation method; it leads to a straightforward counterpart for discrete-time switched linear systems.We show the application of this methodology to the problem of adaptive control of switched linear systems with parametric uncertainties. Inspired by the idea of multiple Lyapunov functions ($\mathtt {MLFs}$), we use piecewise continuous scalar functions to investigate the stabilizability of time-varying switched systems. Starting with time-varying switched linear systems, we first combine the idea of $\mathtt {MLFs}$ with the existence of asymptotically (exponentially, uniformly exponentially) stable functions to provide necessary and sufficient conditions for their asymptotic (exponential, uniform exponential) stabilizability. Compared to traditional differential Lyapunov inequalities, we release the requirement on negative definiteness of the derivatives of $\mathtt {MLFs}$. Successively, the above results are extended to time-varying switched nonlinear systems. Then, two illustrative examples are given to show the applicability of our theoretical results. We study feedback control for a discrete-time integrator with unitary delay in the presence of quantization both in the control action and in the measurement of the controlled variable. In some applications the quantization effects can be neglected, but when high precision is needed, they have to be explicitly accounted for in control design. In this paper, we propose a switched control solution for minimizing the effect of quantization of both the control and controlled variables for the considered system, that is quite common in the computing systems domain, for example, in thread scheduling, clock synchronization, and resource allocation. We show that the switched solution outperforms the one without switching, designed by neglecting quantization, and analyze necessary and sufficient conditions for the controlled system to exhibit periodic solutions in the presence of an additive constant disturbance affecting the control input. This paper introduces the notion of common zeroing-output systems (CZOS) to analyze the stability of switched systems. The concept of CZOS allows one to verify weak zero-state detectability. It characterizes a common behavior of any individual subsystem when the output signal for each subsystem is “approaching” zero. Heuristically speaking, it removes the effect of switching behavior, and thus enables one to analyze stability properties in systems with complex switching signals. With the help of CZOS, the Krasovskii–LaSalle theorem can be extended to switched nonlinear time-varying systems with both arbitrary switching and more general restricted switching cases. For switched nonlinear time-invariant systems, the needed detectability condition is further simplified, leading to several new stability results. Particularly, when a switched linear time-invariant system is considered, it is possible to generate a recursive method, which combines a Krasovskii–LaSalle result and a nested Matrosov result, to find a CZOS if it exists. We show that existence of a global polynomial Lyapunov function for a homogeneous polynomial vector field or a planar polynomial vector field (under a mild condition) implies existence of a polynomial Lyapunov function that is a sum of squares (sos) and that the negative of its derivative is also a sum of squares. This result is extended to show that such sos-based certificates of stability are guaranteed to exist for all stable switched linear systems. For this class of systems, we further show that if the derivative inequality of the Lyapunov function has an sos certificate, then the Lyapunov function itself is automatically a sum of squares. These converse results establish cases where semidefinite programming is guaranteed to succeed in finding proofs of Lyapunov inequalities. Finally, we demonstrate some merits of replacing the sos requirement on a polynomial Lyapunov function with an sos requirement on its top homogeneous component. This technical note focuses on stability analysis and control design of switched affine systems in discrete-time domain. The stability conditions are obtained by taking into account that the system trajectories, governed by a certain switching function, converge to a set of attraction \boldsymbol\mathcal V containing a desired equilibrium point. These conditions follow from the adoption of a general quadratic Lyapunov function whose time variation is bounded above by a concave-convex function with center determined by minimax theory. Our main contribution is to provide a stabilizing state feedback switching function and an invariant set of attraction \boldsymbol\mathcal V_* with minimum volume as far as this class of quadratic Lyapunov functions is adopted. In this work, we study the stability of an autonomous discrete-time linear switched system whose switching sequences are generated by a Muller automaton. This system arises in various engineering problems such as distributed communication and automotive engine control. The asymptotic stability of this system, referred to as regular asymptotic stability (RAS), generalizes two well-known definitions of stability of autonomous discrete-time linear switched systems, namely absolute asymptotic stability (AAS) and shuffle asymptotic stability (SAS). We also extend these stability definitions to robust versions. We show that absolute asymptotic stability, robust absolute asymptotic stability and robust shuffle asymptotic stability are equivalent to exponential stability. In addition, by using the Kronecker product, we prove that a robust regular asymptotic stability problem is equivalent to the conjunction of several robust absolute asymptotic stability problems. This article investigates the stability of positive switched linear systems. We start from motivating examples and focus on the case when each switched subsystem is marginally stable (in the sense that all the eigenvalues of the subsystem matrix are in the closed left-half plane with those on the imaginary axis simple) instead of asymptotically stable. A weak excitation condition is first proposed such that the considered positive switched linear system is exponentially stable. An extension to the case without dwell time assumption is also presented. Then, we study the influence of time-varying delay on the stability of the considered positive switched linear system. We show that the proposed weak excitation condition for the delay-free case is also sufficient for the asymptotic stability of the positive switched linear system under unbounded time-varying delay. In addition, it is shown that the convergence rate is exponential if there exists an upper bound for the delay, irrespective of the magnitude of this bound. In this technical note, the problem of switching stabilization for slowly switched linear systems is investigated. In particular, the considered systems can be composed of all unstable subsystems. Based on the invariant subspace theory, the switching signal with mode-dependent average dwell time (MDADT) property is designed to exponentially stabilize the underlying system. Furthermore, sufficient condition of stabilization for switched systems with all stable subsystems under MDADT switching is also given.
