The feasibility of electrically conductive paper as a low-cost and eco-friendly alternative to copper is presented for application as an antenna conductor in UHF radio-frequency identification (RFID) systems. The conductivity of the paper is determined to be 50 S/m and the effect of such a low conductivity on the radiation performance of a half-wavelength dipole is investigated through simulation and experimental measurements. The radiation efficiency of a dipole cut from a 0.4 mm thick conductive paper sheet is measured to be 5.0%, which translates to an RFID tag read range of 22% of that obtained using copper. This performance is deemed unacceptable for most antenna applications. However, through simulation a conductivity of 500 S/m is identified as a reasonable target for the developers of conductive paper as the current distribution and terminal properties of the resulting antenna become similar to those observed when using copper. The radiation efficiency is projected at 56 % in this case, resulting in an RFID read range of 73% of that obtained using copper. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

A complete characterization of the inkjet printing process using metallic nanoparticle inks on a paper substrate for microwave frequencies up to 12.5 GHz as well as its application to low-cost, high gain and wideband antenna design are demonstrated in this work. Laser and heat sintering of metallic nanoparticles are compared on paper substrate for the first time which demonstrate immense cost and time benefits of laser sintering. The antennas fabricated using the characterized process include a Vivaldi for the UWB band which exhibits a significantly higher gain of up to 8 dBi as compared to the currently published inkjet printed antennas, and a novel slow-wave log periodic dipole array which employs a new miniaturization technique to show 20% width reduction. A microstrip line on very thin membrane substrate (0.05 mm) is slot-coupled through a thick air substrate (12.7 mm) to excite an L-band radiating patch element. A breadboard unit achieved a relatively wide bandwidth of 100 MHz (8%). Very narrow coupling slot is used with aspect ratio of 160 (conventional slot aspect ratio is between 10 to 30). This new feed design makes the thin-membrane or inflatable array antenna technology more practical. It reduces the number of thin-membrane layers required for a dual-pol wide-band inflatable array from three layers in a previous design to two layers. In addition, this technology allows the thin-membrane array antenna elements to be readily integrated with thin-membrane-mounted transmit/receive (T/R) modules. Calculation shows that, without the patch, the micros trip line and slot combination can also radiate as a paper-thin (0.05 mm) radiator at the L-band frequencies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we derive formulas that calculate the impedance parameters (Z-parameters) of multiple antennas near objects to analyze wireless power transfer. Furthermore, we propose a method to calculate the impedance parameters of antennas, the maximum power transfer efficiency, and the optimum load impedance of a wireless power transfer system using equivalent current that generate the same electromagnetic field as that generated by an antenna in transmitting mode. An accurate bistatic scattering center model for cone-shaped targets is proposed in this paper. The model describes the overall attributes of dominant bistatic scattering centers. It includes not only the sliding scattering centers on the smooth surface and bottom edge, but also the scattering centers induced by creeping waves and traveling waves which are not considered in the previous models. To validate the proposed model, the results based on this model are compared with precise scattered fields computed by the full-wave numerical method, namely the hybrid finite element-boundary integral-multilevel fast multipole algorithm (FE-BI-MLFMA). Excellent agreement has been achieved. In contrast to the traditional assumption, it is concluded in this paper that the scattering centers of creeping waves and traveling waves are important, and can not be ignored particularly under bistatic mode. Light-weight antenna arrays require utilizing the same antenna aperture to provide multiple functions (e.g., communications and radar) in separate frequency bands. In this paper, we present a novel antenna element design for a dual-band array, comprising interleaved printed dipoles spaced to avoid grating lobes in each band. The folded dipoles are designed to be resonant at octave-separated frequency bands (1 and 2 GHz), and inkjet-printed on photographic paper. Each dipole is gap-fed by voltage induced electromagnetically from a microstrip line on the other side of the substrate. This nested element configuration shows excellent corroboration between simulated and measured data, with 10-dB return loss bandwidth of at least 5% for each band and interchannel isolation better than 15 dB. The measured element gain is 5.3 to 7 dBi in the two bands, with cross-polarization less than -25 dBi. A large array containing 39 printed dipoles has been fabricated on paper, with each dipole individually fed to facilitate independent beam control. Measurements on the array reveal broadside gain of 12 to 17 dBi in each band with low cross-polarization. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Fundamental bounds on antenna gain are found via convex optimization of the current density in a prescribed region. Various constraints are considered, including self-resonance and only partial control of the current distribution. Derived formulas are valid for arbitrarily shaped radiators of a given conductivity. All the optimization tasks are reduced to eigenvalue problems, which are solved efficiently. The second part of this paper deals with superdirectivity and its associated minimal costs in efficiency and Q-factor. This paper is accompanied by a series of examples practically demonstrating the relevance of the theoretical framework and entirely spanning a wide range of material parameters and electrical sizes used in antenna technology. The presented results are analyzed from a perspective of effectively radiating modes. In contrast to a common approach utilizing spherical modes, the radiating modes of a given body are directly evaluated and analyzed here. All crucial mathematical steps are reviewed in the appendices, including a series of important subroutines to be considered making it possible to reduce the computational burden associated with the evaluation of electrically large structures and structures of high conductivity. Numerous medical operations employ blood transfusions, requiring X-ray irradiated blood for safety concerns. Current irradiation techniques can be significantly improved by replacing standard visual indicators with wireless dosimeter tags that automate the process, reducing inefficiencies, and eliminating blood wastage. A key requirement of the proposed dosimeter tag is flexible and efficient antennas that can be mounted on blood bags. This paper presents the design of a low-cost inkjet-printed dipole antenna on flexible Kapton substrate for a 2.45 GHz radio frequency identification (RFID) dosimeter tag. The tag is to be used in a lossy blood environment, which can severely affect antenna radiation performance. To mitigate this, the concept of artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) unit cells is investigated for best impedance and gain performance. When integrated with a dipole radiator, the fabricated AMC-backed antenna maintains broadside radiation with gains of 4.1–4.8 dBi under planar and bending conditions, and on a lossy blood bag. In a rectenna configuration, the antenna can power sensors for ranges up to 1 m. Measured output dc voltages up to 1.7 V are achieved across a 25 $\text{k}\Omega $ resistor. there has been a renewed interest in phased arrays based on non regular lattices or overlapped subarrays for different types of applications ranging from spaceborne to ground antennas, from civil to military systems. The objective of this special issue consists in providing an overview of the current state-of-the-art in this field, highlighting the latest developments and innovations, and proposing new applications, solutions and challenges for the future. The main topics considered are: 1. sparse and thinned arrays; 2. overlapped and interlaced subarrays; 3. beamforming and multibeam excitation of irregular arrays; 4. fabrication and signal distribution networks for large arrays; 5. overlapped and non-regular conformal arrays; 6. synthesis using irregular and overlapped subarrays. Most of the papers selected are in the area of array antennas based on nonregular lattices. Papers were selected based on detailed peer review and relevance to the topic. Papers are grouped into two main categories: a) array antennas based on non-regular lattices and b) array antennas organized in overlapped subarrays. The papers are briefly summarized. Antennas that operate in the very low frequency (LF) band and below are useful for a number of applications, including long-distance and underwater communication. When constrained in size, the antennas are electrically small and very inefficient. This has motivated the need for novel approaches to LF antenna design. Here, we present concepts for antennas that generate electromagnetic signals from mechanical motion. We first review the generated fields and efficiency of conventional magnetic and electric dipole transmitters. This is then extended to their mechanical counterparts for comparison. Our results show that the motion of magnets or electrets (the electrical analog of a magnet) can efficiently radiate electromagnetic energy when coupled to a low-loss electromechanical suspension. Mechanical antennas, with spatial dimensions on the order of a meter, can theoretically exceed the performance of conventional short dipole and coil transmitters by more than eight orders of magnitude for frequencies of 1 kHz and below. It is found that for very low-frequency (VLF) signals, the mode-conversion interference produces a cycle slip during the sunrise or sunset transition at certain distances far away from the transmitter. In this paper, an anisotropic terrestrial waveguide with abrupt effective height change of 20 km geometry has been adopted to investigate the diurnal behaviors of amplitude and phase caused by the night-to-day transition. At the waveguide junction, sequential determinations of transmission and reflection coefficients are determined by the resulting linear equations from field matching. Field calculations across the day-to-night transition are carried out by using a reciprocity theorem correspondingly. This paper illustrates that VLF wave propagation experiences multimode interference in periodic variations in amplitude during sunrise and sunset over a long propagation path. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the performance of Fresnel lens antennas is investigated in detail. The performance is evaluated in terms of aperture efficiency and stable radiation pattern over a wide frequency band. This paper proposes an efficient technique for enhancing aperture efficiency by smoothly compensating for the spherical phase front arriving upon the lens surface. The feeder has been optimized to fit an axially symmetric cosn-like radiation pattern. For this, an accurate technological process has been used to manufacture a lens that allows for smooth compensation of the phase shift. The lens is compared with a classic Fresnel lens having the same physical dimensions and feeding system. The improvement is validated by measurement, which has revealed a maximum measured gain of 38.9 dBi corresponding to a maximum measured aperture efficiency of 59% with a −2 dB radiation frequency bandwidth of 29.25 GHz around 90 GHz. This amounts to an aperture efficiency enhancement of 60% and −2 dB radiation frequency bandwidth enhancement of 72% as compared with those of the classic Fresnel lens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
