Semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) are essential components in modern optical communication systems and photonic networks. They are used to perform many useful all-optical functions, such as linear amplification, ultrafast signal processing and efficient wavelength conversion. Theoretical models, based on rate equations, have been very successful in describing the performance characteristics of bulk and quantum well lasers and SOAs where excellent agreement between calculated and measured data has been obtained.
