As the dense molecular cloud that was the precursor of our Solar System was collapsing to form a protosun and the surrounding solar-nebula accretion disk, infalling interstellar grains were heated much more effectively by radiation from the forming protosun than by radiation from the disk's accretion shock. Accordingly, we have estimated the temperatures experienced by these infalling grains using radiative diffusion calculations whose sole energy source is radiation from the protosun. Although the calculations are 1-dimensional, they make use of 2-D, cylindrically symmetric models of the density structure of a collapsing, rotating cloud. The temperature calculations also utilize recent models for the composition and radiative properties of interstellar grains (Pollack et al. 1994. Astrophys. J. 421, 615-639), thereby allowing us to estimate which grain species might have survived, intact, to the disk accretion shock and what accretion rates and molecular-cloud rotation rates aid that survival. Not surprisingly, we find that the large uncertainties in the free parameter values allow a wide range of grain-survival results: (1) For physically plausible high accretion rates or low rotation rates (which produce small accretion disks), all of the infalling grain species, even the refractory silicates and iron, will vaporize in the protosun's radiation field before reaching the disk accretion shock. (2) For equally plausible low accretion rates or high rotation rates (which produce large accretion disks), all non-ice species, even volatile organics, will survive intact to the disk accretion shock. These grain-survival conclusions are subject to several limitations which need to be addressed by future, more sophisticated radiative-transfer models. Nevertheless, our results can serve as useful inputs to models of the processing that interstellar grains undergo at the solar nebula's accretion shock, and thus help address the broader question of interstellar inheritance in the solar nebula and present Solar System. These results may also help constrain the size of the accretion disk: for example, if we require that the calculations produce partial survival of organic grains into the solar nebula, we infer that some material entered the disk intact at distances comparable to or greater than a few AU. Intriguingly, this is comparable to the heliocentric distance that separates the C-rich outer parts of the current Solar System from the C-poor inner regions.

We present moderate-resolution (lambda/delta lambda = 300 to 370) reflectance spectra of Mars from 2.04 to 2.44 micrometers that were obtained at UKIRT during the 1993 opposition. Seven narrow absorption features were detected and found to have a Mars origin. By comparison with solar and Mars atmospheric spectra, five of these features were attributed all or in part to Mars atmospheric CO2 or CO(2.052 +/- 0.003, 2.114 +/- 0.002, 2.150 +/- 0.003, 2.331 +/- 0.001, and 2.357 +/- 0.002 micrometers). Two of the bands (2.331 +/- 0.001 and 2.357 +/- 0.002 micrometers) appear to have widths and depths that are consistent with additional, nonatmospheric absorptions, although a solar contribution cannot be entirely ruled out. Two other weak bands centered at 2.278 +/- 0.002 and 2.296 +/- 0.002 micrometers may be at least partially mineralogic in origin. The data provide no conclusive identification of the mineralogy responsible for these absorption features. However, examination of terrestrial spectral libraries and previous moderate spectral resolution mineral studies indicates that the most likely origin of these features is either (bi)carbonate or (bi)sulfate anions in framework silicates or (Fe, Mg)-OH bonds in sheet silicates. If the bands are caused by phyllosilicate minerals, then an explanation must be found for the extremely narrow widths of the cation-OH features in the Mars spectra as compared to terrestrial minerals.

A coupled problem of diffusion and condensation is solved for the H2SO4-H2O system in Venus' cloud layer. The position of the lower cloud boundary and profiles of the H2O and H2SO4 vapor mixing ratios and of the H2O/H2SO4 ratio of sulfuric acid aerosol and its flux are calculated as functions of the column photochemical production rate of sulfuric acid, Phi(sub H2SO4). Variations of the lower cloud boundary are considered. Our basic model, which is constrained to yield f(sub H2O) (30 km) = 30 ppm (Pollack et al. 1993), predicts the position of the lower cloud boundary at 48.4 km coinciding with the mean Pioneer Venus value, the peak H2SO4 mixing ratio of 5.4 ppm, and the H2SO4 production rate Phi(sub H2SO4) = 2.2 x 10(exp 12)/sq cm/s. The sulfur to sulfuric acid mass flux ratio in the clouds is 1:27 in this model, and the mass loading ratio may be larger than this value if sulfur particles are smaller than those of sulfuric acid. The model suggests that the extinction coefficient of sulfuric acid particles with radius 3.7 micrometers (mode 3) is equal to 0.3/km in the middle cloud layer. The downward flux of CO is equal to 1.7 x 10(exp 12)/sq cm/s in this model. Our second model, which is constrained to yield f(sub H2O) = 10 ppm at the lower cloud boundary, close to the value measured by the Magellan radiooccultations, predicts the position of this boundary to be at 46.5 km, which agrees with the Magellan data; f(sub H2O) (30 km) = 90 ppm, close to the data of Moroz et al. (1983) at this altitude; Phi(sub H2SO4) = 6.4 x 10(exp 12)/sq cm/s; and Phi(sub co) = 4.2 x 10(exp 12)/sq cm/s. The S/H2SO4 flux mass ratio is 1:18, and the extinction coefficient of the mode 3 sulfuric acid particles is equal to 0.9 km in the middle cloud layer. A strong gradient of the H2SO4 vapor mixing ratio near the bottom of the cloud layer drives a large upward flux of H2SO4, which condenses and forms the excessive downward flux of liquid sulfuric acid, which is larger by a factor of 4-7 than the flux in the middle cloud layer. This is the mechanism of formation of the lower cloud layer. Variations of the lower cloud layer are discussed. Our modeling of the OCS and CO profiles in the lower atmosphere measured by Pollack et al. (1993) provides a reasonable explanation of these data and shows that the rate coefficient of the reaction SO3 + CO yields CO2 + SO2 is equal to 10(exp -11) exp(-(13,100 +/- 1000)/T) cc/s. The main channel of the reaction between SO3 and OCS is CO2 + (SO)2, and its rate coefficient is equal to 10(exp -11) exp(-(8900 +/- 500)/T) cc/s. In the conditions of Venus' lower atmosphere, (SO)2 is removed by the reaction (SO)2 + OCS yields CO + S2 + SO2. The model predicts an OCS mixing ratio of 28 ppm near the surface.

Numerical calculations of the linear response of a 2D gaseous disk to the perturbations induced by a protoplanet and the corresponding torque are presented. When the pressure gradient is taken into account, torques are increased in disks with gradients in either surface density and sound speed, the effect of the latter being much greater for the same-sized gradient as measured by the power law index. The torques in turn may be used to calculate timescales for orbital migration of protoplanets.

The 5-25 micron real and imaginary refraction indices are presented for palagonite and the silicates pyrophyllite, kaolinite, serpentine, montmorillonite, saponite, and orthopyroxene. Optical constants in the region of the H2O-bending fundamental near 6 microns are obtained for saponite, montmorillonite, and palagonite. It is established that, if a pellet of pure material can be polished to a mirror finish, the optical constants of such noncohesive materials as clays are easily derivable.

A 1D quasi-spherical approximation is presently used under the assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium to model giant-planet formation processes that encompass the accretion and transport of angular momentum for both radiative and convective zones. These calculations have been conducted up to masses comparable to those of Saturn. Angular momentum transport is strong, leading to strong concentration of angular momentum in the outer convective zones which develop envelope masses greater than 30 earth masses. When the models are allowed to contract near the calculation's end, the ratio of centrifugal force to gravity at the outer radius rises sufficiently to validate the quasi-spherical approximation.

The Martian southern hemisphere atmospheric water vapor column abundance measurements reported agree with Viking Orbiter atmospheric water detectors during early southern spring and southern autumnal equinox; profiles obtained in southern mid- and late summer, however, indicate the presence of twice as much water both in the southern hemisphere and planetwide. This discrepancy is accounted for by the high optical depths created by two global dust storms during the Viking year, while the present observations were obtained in the case of the relatively dust-free atmosphere of the 1988-1989 opposition.

The results of a comparison of laboratory spectral reflectance measurements of particulate mixtures of both hydrated silicates and palagonite with water ice, on the one hand, with two previously unpublished reflectance spectra of Callisto, yield direct support for the hypothesis that the measured reflectance of Callisto includes a substantial nonice component. Hapke's (1981) equations are used in a theoretical model for thorough analysis of telescopic data; a comparison of the calculation results thus obtained with measured reflectance data for Callisto indicate that three-component, ice/magnetite/serpentine mixtures are a better match for telescopic data than two-component ice mixtures.

One-dimensional, spherically symmetric hydrodynamic calculations of the effect of the impact of a 1-2 earth mass body on the gaseous envelope of Uranus, characterizing the impact as a partition of energy such that a fraction is deposited directly into the envelope, while the rest heats the core. A sharp transition is found between the cases of nearly-complete retention and dispersal, corresponding to energy-deposition values above or below a critical value. Within a realistic parameter range, the angular momentum of the Uranus system may be explained, together with the retention of a gaseous envelope of about 1 earth mass.

Viking lander camera images of the Sun were used to compute atmospheric optical depth at two sites over a period of 1 to 1/3 martian years. The complete set of 1044 optical depth determinations is presented in graphical and tabular form. Error estimates are presented in detail. Otpical depths in the morning (AM) are generally larger than in the afternoon (PM). The AM-PM differences are ascribed to condensation of water vapor into atmospheric ice aerosols at night and their evaporation in midday. A smoothed time series of these differences shows several seasonal peaks. These are simulated using a one-dimensional radiative convective model which predicts martial atmospheric temperature profiles. A calculation combinig these profiles with water vapor measurements from the Mars Atmospheric Water Detector is used to predict when the diurnal variations of water condensation should occur. The model reproduces a majority of the observed peaks and shows the factors influencing the process. Diurnal variation of condensation is shown to peak when the latitude and season combine to warm the atmosphere to the optimum temperature, cool enough to condense vapor at night and warm enough to cause evaporation at midday.

The conditions under which Mars could have had a warm wet climate during its early evolution are explored by means of numerical simulations, incorporating more accurate data on the opacity of gaseous CO2 and H2O in the solar and thermal spectral regions (McClatchey et al., 1971) into the one-dimensional radiative-convective greenhouse model of Kasting and Ackerman (1986). The results are presented in extensive graphs and characterized in detail, with consideration of atmospheric CO2 loss rates, sources of atmospheric CO2, CO2 partitioning between atmosphere and hydrosphere, the Mars volatile inventory, the CO2 geochemical cycle, climate evolution, and observational tests. It is concluded that greenhouse conditions (requiring atmospheric CO2 of 1-5 bar) could have existed for a period of about 1 Gyr if the total surficial inventory of CO2 was 2-10 bar.

A model of convective turbulence which takes radiative dissipation, rotation, and convective motion anisotropy into account, on the basis of a closure for the nonlinear interactions that employs the growth rates of hydrodynamic instabilities, is used to obtain a theoretical framework for modeling the primordial solar nebula. It is assumed that convection is the sole source of turbulence causing the solar nebula to evolve. Vertical structure equations in the thin disk approximation are developed and a detailed comparison with the previous solar nebula convective models of such workers as Lin et al. (1981, 1982) is undertaken. The present values for the turbulent efficiency are much lower and more sensitive to opacity and surface density, resulting in low turbulent speeds, a more massive disk, a lower accretion rate 'best value', and a longer characteristic dispersal time for the disk. It is concluded that convection may not be the dominant source of turbulence needed to evolve young solar/stellar nebulae.

The present calculation of giant planet evolution proceeds under the hypothesis that the solid cores formed by small particle accretion later attracted their gaseous envelopes from the solar nebula gravitationally. Evolutionary calculations are presented for the beginning of gaseous envelope formation around the core mass; the growth of core and envelope to a critical core mass; the derivation of high luminosity from the envelope mass due to gravitational contraction, and the termination of both core and envelope accretion on a time-scale of 5 Gyr.

An evaluation is made of the capacity of planetesimals to penetrate the envelopes of giant planets during their growth phase, by means of a core instability mechanism in which the growing core becomes gradually more adept in the gravitational concentration of gas from its solar nebula environment, until a runaway gas accretion occurs. If most of the accreted mass is contained in planetesimals larger that about 1 km, the critical core mass for runaway accretion will not significantly change when planetesimal dissolution is taken into account; it is accordingly suggested that giant planet envelopes should contain above-solar proportions of virtually all elements, relative to hydrogen.

Models possessing an upper haze layer of finite optical depth and a lower cloud layer of infinite optical depth at discrete altitudes are used to bound the wavelength-averaged phase integrals and bolometric albedos of Uranus and Neptune. The models differ in the assumed value of the particles' single scattering phase function and the wavelength dependence of the haze optical depth. A range of phase functions, from the isotropic to those characterizing Titan, Jupiter, and Saturn atmosphere particles, are discussed. The results obtained imply that the meteorological regimes in the observable atmospheres of Uranus and Neptune may differ considerably; internal heat flux could play a much more important role for Neptune than for Uranus.

The Rosseland mean opacity owing to grains was calculated as a function of temperature and density for nebulae having solar elemental abundances. The values of the mean opacity were evaluated with a generalized formulation allowing for anisotropic scattering. The values of the mean opacity do not depend sensitively on the choice of the particle size distribution function, provided that there are few particles having sizes in excess of several tens of microns. The results indicate that thermal convection in primordial nebulae occurs over broader ranges of altitudes at low temperatures than at high temperatures, and for size distributions for which extensive aggregation has not yet occurred.

The four-to-fivefold difference in water abundance between the earth and Venus may reflect either initial differences in the bulk volatile content of the two planets, or massive water loss mechanisms on Venus. These two possibilities were investigated by performing thermodynamic calculations on the heterogeneous system C-O-H-N-S, varying C/H upward from its 0.033 terrestrial value. While atmospheric H2O decreases as bulk C/H increases, the latter would have to rise to an improbably high value in order to account for the low water abundance on Venus through initial deficiency alone. Calculations suggest that if the outgassed C/H on Venus was higher than on earth by even a factor of 5, it would have been sufficient for CO to become competitive with FeO as a sink for oxygen. Together with the lower initial water abundance value that follows from a higher C/H ratio, water loss due to CO may have been a major factor.

A one-dimensional radiative-convective model is used to compute temperature and water vapor profiles as functions of solar flux for an earthlike atmosphere. The troposphere is assumed to be fully saturated, with a moist adiabatic lapse rate, and changes in cloudiness are neglected. Predicted surface temperatures increase monotonically from -1 to 111 C as the solar flux is increased from 0.81 to 1.45 times its present value. The results imply that the surface temperature of a primitive water-rich Venus should have been at least 80-100 C and may have been much higher. Water vapor should have been a major atmospheric constituent at all altitudes, leading to the rapid hydrodynamic escape of hydrogen. The oxygen left behind by this process was presumably consumed by reactions with reduced minerals in the crust.

As the dominant nonthermal mechanism for the escape of hydrogen in past Venus atmospheres, the charge exchange of H(+) with H would have provided an escape flux close to the diffusion-limiting value for H-mixing ratios up to 0.002 at the homopause, which also marks the onset of hydrodynamic flow. Charge exchange therefore represents a viable mechanism through which Venus could have lost up to an earth-equivalent ocean of water from its atmosphere over geologic time. Present Venus atmosphere estimates are based on in situ Pioneer Venus mission measurements, and assumptions in the course of extrapolation to past atmospheres have been with respect to the nature of the bulge, circulation pattern, and ion temperature.

Radial intensity scans of a Voyager 2 high phase angle image of Titan have been inverted to yield vertical extinction profiles at 1 deg intervals around the limb. A detached haze layer with peak particle number densities of about 0.2 cu/cm exists at all latitudes south of about 45 N, and at an altitude of 300-350 km. The optical depth 0.01 level lies at a radius of 2932 + or - 5 km at the equator and at a radius of 2915 + or - 10 km over the poles (altitudes of 357 + or - 5 and 340 + or - 10 km, respectively). In addition to the haze layer at 300-350 km, there is a small enhancement in the extinction at about 450 km which exists at all latitudes between 75 deg S and about 60 deg N.

A one-dimensional photochemical-dynamic model is used to study hydrodynamic loss of hydrogen from a primitive, water-rich atmosphere on Venus. The escape flux is calculated as a function of the H2O mixing ratio at the atmospheric cold trap. The cold trap mixing ratio is then related in an approximate fashion to the H2O concentration in the lower atmosphere. Hydrodynamic escape should have been the dominant loss process for hydroogen when the H2O mass mixing ratio in the lower atmosphere exceeded approximately 0.1. The escape rate would have depended upon the magnitude of the solar ultraviolet flux and the atmospheric EUV heating efficiency and, to a lesser extent, on the O2 content of the atmosphere. The time required for Venus to have lost the bulk of a terrestrial ocean of water is on the order of a billion years. Deuterium would have been swept away along with hydrogen if the escape rate was high enough, but some D/H enrichment should have occurred as the escape rate slowed down.

An analysis is presented of the physical characteristics and photochemical aftereffects of the 1908 Tunguska explosive cometary meteor, whose physical manifestations are consistent with a five million ton object's entry into the earth's atmosphere at 40 km/sec. Aerodynamic calculations indicate that the shock waves emanating from the falling meteor could have generated up to 30 million tons of nitric oxide in the stratosphere and mesosphere. A fully interactive one-dimensional chemical-kinetics model of atmospheric trace constituents is used to estimate the photochemical consequences of such a large NO injection. The 35-45% hemispherical ozone depletion predicted by the model is in keeping with the 30 + or - 15% ozone variation reported for the first year after the Tunguska fall. Attention is also given to the optical anomalies which followed the event for indications of NO(x)-O(x) chemiluminescent emissions, NO2 solar absorption, and meteoric dust turbidity, along with possible climate changes due to the nearly one million tons of pulverized dust deposited in the mesosphere and stratosphere by the meteor.

A spectrum of Saturn obtained from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory exhibits an emission peak at 6.8 microns attributed to ethane, but is otherwise dominated by absorption from 5.3 to 7.2 microns. While the large absorption in this spectral region is consistent with the presence of ammonia gas or ammonia ice, or both, such an explanation is inconsistent with the lack of a major absorption near 3.0 microns.

Theoretical models are presented of the brightness of Saturn's rings at microwave wavelengths (0.34-21.0 cm) including both intrinsic ring emission and diffuse scattering by the rings of the planetary emission. In addition, several previously existing sets of interferometric observations of the Saturn system at 0.83, 3.71, 6.0, 11.1, and 21.0 cm wavelengths are analyzed. A comparison of models and experimental data make it possible to establish improved constraints on the properties of the rings. In particular, it is found that (1) the maximum optical depths in the rings is 1.5 + or - 0.3 referred to visible wavelengths; (2) a significant decrease in ring optical depths from 3.7 to 21.0 cm makes it possible to rule out the possibility that more than 30% of the cross section of the rings is composed of particles larger than about a meter; and (3) the ring particles cannot be primarily of silicate composition (independently of particle size), and the particles cannot be primarily smaller than about 0.1 cm, independently of composition.

The response of Martian climate to changes in solar energy deposition caused by variations of the Martian orbit and obliquity is examined. A systematic study is presented of the seasonal cycles of carbon dioxide, water, and dust to provide a complete picture of the climate for various orbital configurations. A new theory for the formation of the polar laminae is developed on the basis of this systematic examination. For the present orbital configuration and climate of Mars, it is shown that regolith damping of the seasonal CO2 cycle is unlikely; the mean atmospheric pressure is probably in equilibrium with the regolith; the low albedo of the north H2O polar cap can be explained by an admixture of 85% ice and 15% dust; and the albedo of the polar caps and the polar heat budget are very sensitive to small variations in dust deposition.

A physical model of the formation and growth of aerosols in the atmosphere of Titan has been constructed in light of the observed correlation between variations in Titan's albedo and the sunspot cycle. The model was developed to fit spectral observations of deep methane bands, pressures, temperature distributions, and cloud structure, and is based on a one-dimensional physical-chemical model developed to simulate the earth's stratospheric aerosol layer. Sensitivity tests reveal the model parameters to be relatively insensitive to particle shape but sensitive to particle density, with high particle densities requiring larger aerosol mass production rates to produce compatible clouds. Solution of the aerosol continuity equations for particles of sizes 13 A to about 3 microns indicates the importance of a warm upper atmosphere and a high-altitude mass injection layer, and the production of aerosols at very low aerosol optical depths. Limits are obtained for the chemical production of aerosol mass and the eddy diffusion coefficient, and it is found that an increase in mass input causes a decrease in mean particle size.

A similitude parameter is derived which is based on theoretical considerations of erosion due to sand in saltation. This parameter has been used to correlate wind tunnel experiments of particle flow over model craters. The characteristics of the flow field in the vicinity and downstream of a crater are discussed and it is shown that erosion is initiated in areas lying under a pair of trailing vortices. The erosion rate parameter is used to calculate erosion rates on Mars, reported in Part 2, to be published later.

During its active lifetime Mariner 9 obtained 32 high-resolution pictures of Phobos, and 9 of Deimos. The spacecraft orbit was adequate for about 80% complete coverage of Phobos. However, the coverage of the outer satellite was restricted to the Mars-facing side. The approaches used in processing the pictures are discussed. For each satellite picture a coordinate grid of the satellite was obtained with the aid of a computer.

A comparison of aircraft-based measurement data on Venus' near-infrared (1.2- to 4.1-micron) reflection spectrum with computer generated spectra of a number of cloud candidates shows a 75-% or more concentrated water solution of sulfuric acid to give the only acceptable match to the profile of Venus' strong 3-micron absorption feature. However, the measurement data obtained also show a modest decline in reflectivity from 2.3-micron to 1.2-micron wavelength, which is inconsistent with the flat spectrum of sulfuric acid in this spectral region. It is hypothesized that this decline is due to impurities in the sulfuric acid droplets.

A euphotic zone seems to exist at about 1 cm subsurface in the Martian epilith. At this depth, visible light is still intense enough to be utilized by conceivable photosynthetic organisms; but the germicidal ultraviolet intensities at the Martian surface have been reduced to values manageable by terrestrial life. Such euphotic zone organisms would experience moderately high Martian temperatures at equatorial latitudes and can be dispersed readily during global dust storms. During such storms the Martian euphotic zone may reach the surface. The aerosol content of the Martian atmosphere can be monitored by multiband single-line scans of the sun at large zenith angles by the Viking lander camera; and the postulated euphotic zone organisms can be searched for with the Viking lander sample arm and biology experiments.

The evolutionary and static models of Jupiter and Saturn were calculated with homogeneous solar composition mantles and dense cores of material consisting of solar abundances of SiO2, MgO, Fe, and Ni. Evolutionary sequences for Jupiter were calculated with cores of mass ranging from 2 to 8% of the Jovian mass; the Saturn sequences ranged from cores of mass of 16 to 22% of total mass. Two envelope mixtures representative of the solar abundances were used: they contained mass fraction of 0.74 and 0.77 of hydrogen, respectively, and 0.24 and 0.21 mass fractions of helium. For Jupiter, the observations of the temperature at 1 bar pressure, of radius and of internal luminosity were best fit by evolutionary models with a core mass of about 6.5% and chemical composition of 0.77 mass fraction of hydrogen and 0.21 mass fraction of helium. The cooling time calculated for Saturn was 2.6 x 10 to the 9th yr, almost a factor of 2 less than the percentage of the solar system.

Evolutionary calculations are presented for spherically symmetric protoplanetary configurations with a homogeneous solar composition and with masses of 1000, 1500, 28,500 and 42,000 solar masses. Recent improvements in equation-of-state and opacity calculations are incorporated. Sequences start as subcondensations in the solar nebula with densities of 10 to the -10th to 10 to the -11th g/cu cm, evolve through a hydrostatic phase lasting 100 thousand to 10 million years, undergo dynamic collapse due to dissociation of molecular hydrogen, and regain hydrostatic equilibrium with densities of about 1 g/cu cm. The nature of the objects at the onset of the final phase of cooling and contraction is discussed and compared with previous calculations.

An analysis of Titan's solar phase variation as a function of wavelength together with the continuum geometric albedo makes it possible to set limits on the real part of the refractive index and on the average particle size of the aerosol component of Titan's atmosphere of between about 1.5 and 2.0 and between 0.20 microns and about 0.35 microns, respectively. If the real part of the refractive index is known the average particle size can be determined to within a few percent, and varies inversely with the real part of the refractive index. Using this information in a two-layer model of a methane-aerosol atmosphere and comparing the result with Titan's visible and near-infrared methane spectrum leads to the conclusion that the top layer of Titan's atmosphere contains 0.01 km atm of methane and 2.5 extinction optical depths of aerosol, while the data are consistent with a bottom layer containing 2.2 km atm of methane and about 7.5 aerosol optical depths for a real part of the refractive index equal to 1.7 and an average particle size of 0.25 microns.

The results of a series of laboratory experiments initiated to simulate Martian eolian erosion are presented. Experiments were conducted under Martian atmospheric pressure and compared to natural eolian sand produced on earth. It is reported that the less dense atmosphere on Mars resulted in more energetic eolian erosion manifested by an slightly higher rate of grain rounding and surface textures that included semicircular depressions termed 'popouts'. It is suggested that physical and chemical weathering may proceed more rapidly on Mars than on earth, given a sufficient supply of water vapor. In addition, clay mineral formations should be facilitated by the presence of large amounts of disrupted material. Finally, it is noted that the disrupted material could increase the ability of the soil to act as a reservoir for water thereby provisionally explaining the large amount of bound water on the surface soil material over much of Mars.

An investigation of the Martian polar cap winds and their response to a variety of factors is carried out by numerical experiments based on a zonally symmetric primitive equation model. The seasonal thermal forcing, mass exchange between polar caps and atmosphere, large-scale topography, and polar cap size are discussed, noting that topography has a small effect, but the circulation intensity increases with cap size. The model results show that surface winds near the edge of a retreating polar cap are enhanced, and that the surficial wind indicators near the south pole are formed during spring and those near the north pole during winter. It is suggested that the high-latitude dune fields in the northern hemisphere are formed when the terrain is covered by frost, and that the saltating particles are 'snowflakes' which formed by the mechanism proposed by Pollack (1976). The model results for the winter simulation compare favorably with general circulation model (GCM) calculations.

Known properties of the current solar system and Bodenheimer's (1977) model of early Jovian evolution are employed to develop a mechanism for satellite capture based on gas drag in primordial circumplanetary envelopes. In particular, the deceleration and fragmentation of two parent bodies passing through an extended primordial Jovian nebula may account for the clusters of prograde and retrograde satellites of Jupiter. Subsequently, the fragments probably underwent limited orbital evolution, and were dispersed by collision with a stray body. The heavy element cores of the outer planets may also be due to primordial gas drag capture. Nebular drag capture of the Martian satellites Phobos and Deimos, Neptune's Nereid and Triton, and Saturn's Phoebe and Iapetus is also conceivable.

Observational data related to climatic change on Venus, earth and Mars are reviewed. The channel features on Mars suggest an early to intermediate epoch of warmer and wetter climate, while the layered polar deposits imply more recent periodic variations in climate. A more reducing atmosphere, which would have produced an enhanced greenhouse effect, may have been responsible for warmer periods in the early history of Mars and earth. Detailed calculations relating atmospheric pressure and composition to the temperature state of Mars are presented. The possibility of a runaway greenhouse effect on Venus resulting in the emplacement of volatiles entirely in the atmosphere is also examined. Periodic variations in orbital eccentricity and axial obliquity may have contributed to alternating glacial and interglacial periods on earth. Mechanisms accounting for the laminated terrain of Mars, and the influence of Martian tectonic distortions on the planet's climate also receive attention.

Reflectivity spectra of the trailing and leading sides of Io, Europa, Callisto, and Ganymede are analyzed which were obtained at an altitude of 41,000 ft from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory with circular variable filter-wheel spectrometers in the spectral region from 0.7 to 5.5 microns. The data are compared with laboratory spectrum and with synthetic spectra constructed on the basis of simple multiscattering theory. The 2.9-micron feature in Callisto's spectra is attributed primarily to bound water; the fractional amounts of water-ice cover on the trailing and leading sides of Ganymede and on the leading side of Europa are estimated. The bare-ground areas on Ganymede are shown to have reflectivity properties comparable to those of Callisto's surface in the studied spectral region, and the surfaces of both satellites are found to contain significant quantities of bound water. It is suggested that minor but significant amounts of ferrous-bearing material (either ferrous salts or alkali feldspars) can account for the 1.35-micron feature of Io.

The shape and absolute value of Venus' reflectivity spectrum is measured in the 1.2- to 4.0 micrometer spectral region with a circular variable filter wheel spectrometer having a spectral resolution of 1.5%. Comparing these spectra with synthetic spectra generated with a multiple-scattering computer code, a number of properties of the Venus clouds are inferred. Evidence is obtained indicating that the clouds are made of a water solution of sulfuric acid in their top unit optical depth, and that the clouds are made of this material down to an optical depth of at least 25. In addition, the acid concentration is 84 plus or minus 2% H2SO4 by weight in the top unit optical depth, the total optical depth of the clouds is 37.5 plus or minus 12.5, and the cross-sectional weighted mean particle radius lies between 0.5 and 1.4 micrometers in the top unit optical depth of the clouds. It is found that the average volume mixing ratio of H2SO4 and H2O contained in the cloud material both equal approximately 2 x 10 to the -6. Employing vapor pressure arguments, the acid concentration is shown to equal 84 plus or minus 6% at the cloud bottom and the water vapor mixing ratio beneath the clouds lies between 6 x 10 to the -4 and 10 to the -2.

A far-IR emission spectrum of Venus covering the wavelength range from 17 to 38 microns is examined which was obtained on five nights at an altitude of 14 km with the 30-cm telescope of the NASA Lear Jet. The spectrum is found to be characterized by an overall continuum level with noticeable absorption shortward of 20 microns and longward of 30 microns as compared with a 245-K blackbody. The continuum level is taken as implying a continuous source of opacity in the Venusian atmosphere over the entire range from 17 to 38 microns with increased opacity shortward of 20 microns and longward of 30 microns. It is shown that a haze of sulfuric acid droplets can provide the necessary opacity and explain the observed depressions. A pressure level of roughly 200 mb is deduced for this spectrum.

The radar backscattering characteristics of compositional and structural models of Saturn's rings are calculated and compared with observations of the absolute value, wavelength dependence, and degree of depolarization of the rings' radar cross section (reflectivity). The doubling method is used to calculate reflectivities for systems that are many particles thick using optical depths derived from observations at visible wavelengths. If the rings are many particles thick, irregular centimeter- to meter-sized particles composed primarily of water ice attain sufficiently high albedos and scattering efficiencies to explain the radar observations. In that case, the wavelength independence of radar reflectivity implies the existence of a broad particle size distribution; a narrower size distribution is also a possibility. Particles of primarily silicate composition are ruled out by the radar observations. Purely metallic particles may not be ruled out on the basis of existing radar observations. A monolayer of very large ice 'particles' that exhibit multiple internal scattering may not yet be ruled out.

Data obtained with the infrared interferometric spectrometer (IRIS) aboard Mariner 9 during the global Martian dust storm of 1971-1972 are analyzed to study the particle sizes in detail, estimate the dust particle size distribution, and determine the dust optical depth. Theoretical spectra of the emergent intensity from dust clouds with properties similar to those of the Martian cloud are generated, deficiencies of the approximation used are discussed, and the information content of the IR aerosol spectra is assessed. Analysis of IRIS spectra from a series of orbits spread through the early months of the Mariner 9 mission indicates that the dust could have been either igneous material with an SiO2 content similar to or higher than that of a typical terrestrial sediment or clay minerals similar to those on earth. In either case, the Martian dust was differentiated by geologic or weathering processes. The dust particle size distribution between 1 and 10 microns is found to have a slope similar to that of terrestrial dust size distributions far from source regions.

A gravitational-contraction history is calculated for a homogeneous quasi-equilibrium Saturn model of solar composition without a rock-ice core and without allowance for the possible separation of hydrogen and helium. The calculations begin at the time when Saturn's radius was ten times its current value, and the subsequent gravitational contraction is followed for 4.5 billion years. The results obtained are given in terms of the path of the evolving model on the H-R diagram, the variation of central temperature with central density, the time variation of radius and internal luminosity, and the energy changes that take place during the evolution. These results are compared with those of similar calculations for Jupiter, and the internal structure of the evolutionary models is examined in detail. The Saturn calculations yield a radius at the current epoch that is 9% larger than the observed value and an excess luminosity comparable to that observed. It is noted that an inhomogeneous model containing a solar-mix envelope and a central rocky core has a radius equal to the observed value.

Results are reported for wind-tunnel experiments performed to determine the threshold friction speed of particles with different densities. Experimentally determined threshold speeds are plotted as a function of particle diameter and in terms of threshold parameter vs particle friction Reynolds number. The curves are compared with those of previous experiments, and an A-B curve is plotted to show differences in threshold speed due to differences in size distributions and particle shapes. Effects of particle diameter are investigated, an expression for threshold speed is derived by considering the equilibrium forces acting on a single particle, and other approximately valid expressions are evaluated. It is shown that the assumption of universality of the A-B curve is in error at very low pressures for small particles and that only predictions which take account of both Reynolds number and effects of interparticle forces yield reasonable agreement with experimental data. Effects of nonerodible surface roughness are examined, and threshold speeds computed with allowance for this factor are compared with experimental values. Threshold friction speeds on Mars are then estimated for a surface pressure of 5 mbar, taking into account all the factors considered.

Threshold wind speeds for setting particles into motion on Mars are estimated by evaluating experimentally observed threshold friction velocities and determining the ratio of this velocity to the threshold wind speed at the top of earth's atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). Turning angles between the direction of the wind at the top of the ABL and the wind stress at the surface are also estimated. Detailed consideration is given to the dependence of the threshold wind speed at the top of the ABL on particle diameter, surface pressure, air temperature, atmospheric stability and composition, surface roughness, and interparticle cohesion. The results are applied to interpret a number of phenomena that have been observed on Mars and are attributable to aeolian processes. It is shown that: (1) minimum threshold wind speeds of about 50 to 100 m/sec are required to cause particle motion on Mars under 'favorable' conditions; (2) particle motion should be infrequent and strongly correlated with proximity to small topographical features; (3) in general, particle motion occurs more readily at night than during the day, in winter polar areas than equatorial areas around noon, and for H2O or CO2 ice particles than for silicate particles; and (4) the boundary between saltating and suspendible particles is located at a particle diameter of about 100 microns.

The paper investigates constraints imposed on the ice content of Saturn's satellites and rings by the planet's high luminosity during the early part of its quasi-equilibrium contraction phase. It is assumed that the addition of ices to the satellites was not completed until after the start of the quasi-equilibrium contraction and that the condensation of ices ceased at the same time within the primordial nebulae of Jupiter and Saturn. Using previously derived limits on the time of condensation cessation for Jupiter's system, the following tentative conclusions are made: (1) Titan is the innermost satellite at whose position a methane-containing ice could condense; (2) water ice could have condensed at the positions of all the satellites; (3) the systematic decrease in the mass of the regular satellites with decreasing distance from the planet may have been caused, in part, by the larger time intervals, for the closer satellites, between the start of contraction and the first condensation of ices at their positions; and (4) ammonia ices, primarily NH4SH, were able to condense at the positions of all but the innermost satellites. It is also shown that water ice could have condensed in the region of the rings near the end of the condensation period.

Martian secular changes and dark area regeneration attributed to movement of sand, dust and wind caused by elevation and slope differences

Polarization measurements were carried out in orange light for Phobos and Deimos on the Mariner 9 A-camera system at large phase angles. The presence of regoliths on the satellites is indicated by a comparison of the measurement data with the results of laboratory measurements on powdered rock samples. Four different sets of assumptions concerning the filter factors were taken into account in the data reduction process.
