Abstract: A study of the vertical cloud structure of oval BA and its red color change is presented in this third part of our complete analysis. A large interest in Jupiter’s anticyclone BA was created by its reddening that occurred between 2005 and 2006. In this work we quantify the color change in oval BA by using images taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in six filters from the near ultraviolet (F250W) to the deep methane band in the near infrared (F892N). Reflectivity changes are noteworthy in nadir viewing geometry at the ultraviolet and blue wavelengths (F250W, F330W and F435W filters) but almost undetectable or inside error bars in the rest of filters (F550M, F658N and F892N). The observed reflectivity variations are discussed in terms of a commonly accepted vertical cloud structure model for jovian anticyclones in order to explore some causes for the color alteration. Our models of the observed reflectivity variation show that the vortex clouds did not change its vertical extension (top pressure) or its optical depth. We find that a change occurred in the absorbing properties of the particles populating the upper aerosols (single scattering albedo and imaginary refractive index). A discussion on the thermo-physical and dynamical properties of the vortex that could be in the origin of the color change is also presented. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this work we analyze and compare the vertical cloud structure of Saturn''s Equatorial Zone in two different epochs: the first one close to the Voyagers flybys (1979–1981) and the second one in 2004, when the Cassini spacecraft entered its orbit around the planet. Our goal is to retrieve the altitude of cloud features used as zonal wind tracers in both epochs. We reanalyze three different sets of photometrically calibrated published data: ground-based in 1979, Voyager 2 PPS and ISS observations in 1981, and we analyze a new set of Hubble Space Telescope images for 2004. For all situations we reproduced the observed reflectivity by means of a similar vertical model with three layers. The results indicate the presence of a changing tropospheric haze in 1979–1981 (, ) and in 2004 (, ) where the tracers are embedded. According to this model the Voyager 2 ISS images locate cloud tracers moving with zonal velocities of 455 to 465 (±2) m/s at a pressure level of 360±140 mbar. For HST observations, our previous works had showed cloud tracers moving with zonal wind speeds of at a pressure level of about . All these values are calculated in the same region (). This speed difference, if interpreted as a vertical wind shear, requires a change of per scale height, two times greater than that estimated from temperature observations. We also perform an initial guess on Cassini ISS vertical sounding levels, retrieving values compatible with HST ones and Cassini CIRS derived vertical wind shear, but not with Voyager wind measurements. We conclude that the wind speed velocity differences measured between 1979–1981 and 2004 cannot be explained as a wind shear effect alone and demand dynamical processes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We present a study of the vertical structure of clouds and hazes in the upper atmosphere of Saturn''s Southern Hemisphere during 1994–2003, about one third of a Saturn year, based on Hubble Space Telescope images. The photometrically calibrated WFPC2 images cover the spectral region between the near-UV (218–255 nm) and the near-IR (953–1042 nm), including the 890 nm methane band. Using a radiative transfer code, we have reproduced the observed center-to-limb variations in absolute reflectivity at selected latitudes which allowed us to characterize the vertical structure of the entire hemisphere during this period. A model atmosphere with two haze layers has been used to study the variation of hazes with latitude and to characterize their temporal changes. Both hazes are located above a thick cloud, putatively composed of ammonia ice. An upper thin haze in the stratosphere (between 1 and 10 mbar) is found to be persistent and formed by small particles (radii ). The lower thicker haze close to the tropopause level shows a strong latitudinal dependence in its optical thickness (typically τ∼20–40 at the equator but τ∼5 at the pole, at 814 nm). This tropospheric haze is blue-absorbent and extends from 50 to 100 mbar to about ∼400 mbar. Both hazes show temporal variability, but at different time-scales. First, there is a tendency for the optical thickness of the stratospheric haze to increase at all latitudes as insolation increases. Second, the tropospheric haze shows mid-term changes (over time scales from months to 1–2 years) in its optical thickness (typically by a factor of 2). Such changes always occur within a rather narrow latitude band (width ∼5–10°), affecting almost all latitudes but at different times. Third, we detected a long-term (∼10 year) decrease in the blue single-scattering albedo of the tropospheric haze particles, most intense in the equatorial and polar areas. Long-term changes follow seasonal insolation variations smoothly without any apparent delay, suggesting photochemical processes that affect the particles optical properties as well as their size. In contrast, mid-term changes are sudden and show various time-scales, pointing to a dynamical origin. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images (1997–2002) do not show a hexagonal wave in the south pole that is a counterpart of the northern one (D. A. Godfrey 1988, Icarus76, 335–356). However, a polar jet similar to that in which the north polar hexagonal wave is embedded has been discovered in the southern hemisphere. The HST images also reveal the existence of a small polar “cap” about 2000 km in diameter that marks the rotational pole of the planet, as well as unexpected changes in the nearby cloud structure on a timescale of years. Abstract: Saturn''s southern pole was observed at high resolution by the Cassini Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS) during the spacecraft insertion orbit in July 2004. Cloud tracking of individual features on images taken at a wavelength of 938 nm reveal the existence of a strong polar vortex enclosed by a jet with maximum speed of relative to System III rotation frame, and peak at 87 °S planetographic latitude. Radiative transfer models of the reflected light, based on the Cassini images complemented by Hubble Space Telescope images from March 2004, indicate that the aerosol particles in the vortex are structured vertically in three detached layers. We find two hazes and one dense cloud distributed in altitude between (top of the dense cloud) and few mbar (top of the stratospheric haze), spanning a vertical altitude range of . The vortex area coincides with a thermal hot spot recently reported, indicating that winds decrease with altitude above polar clouds. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A study of the dynamics of the second largest anticyclone in Jupiter, Oval BA, and its red colour change that occurred in late 2005 is presented in a three part study. The first part, this paper, deals with its long-term kinematical and dynamical behaviour monitored since its formation in 2000 to September 2008 using ground-based observations archived at the public International Outer Planet Watch (IOPW) database. The vortex changed its zonal drift velocity from 1.8ms−1 in the period 2000–2002 to 0.8ms−1 in 2002–2003, and to 2.5ms−1 since late 2003. It also migrated southwards by 1.0±0.5° in latitude between 2000 and 2004, remaining afterwards at an almost fixed latitude position. During the period 2000–2007, the oval also changed its triangular-like shape to a more symmetrical one. No latitudinal change was found in the months before the development of a red annulus in its interior. The colour change took place in less than 5months in 2005–2006 and no red colour feature was observed to have been present or entrained by BA months before the annulus development. After detailed examination of the four encounters between BA and GRS that took place during this 9 year period, we did not detect any noticeable change in its drift rate or in apparent structure associated with the encounters at cloud level. Also, the area of BA did not significantly change in this period. Additionally, we found that BA displays a long-term oscillation of ∼160days in its longitude position with peak to peak amplitude of 1.2°. Numerical experiments using the global circulation model EPIC reproduce accurately the shape, connecting it to its latitude migration, and morphology of the oval and confirm that no strong interaction between BA and the GRS is possible at least in the current situation. Abstract: In this second part of our study of the large jovian anticyclone BA we present detailed measurements of its internal circulation and numerical models of its interaction with the zonal jets and nearby cyclonic regions. We characterized the flow using high-resolution observations obtained by the Cassini spacecraft in December 2000 (9 months after the genesis of BA as a result of the merger of two large White Ovals), by the ACS camera onboard HST in January 2005 and April 2006 and by the New Horizons spacecraft in February 2007. Cloud motions were derived from high-resolution images using an automatic correlator that provides a large sampling of the motions in images separated by short time intervals (30min–2h). The internal wind structure did not change when the oval changed its color reddening in late 2005–early 2006 and all four datasets from 2000 to 2007 consistently show a similar wind regime: an asymmetric intense anticyclonic vortex with faster winds in its Southern portion with mean speeds of 110m/s and peak velocities of 135m/s. These speeds are slightly higher than those measured in the three White Ovals predecessors of BA by the Voyagers [Mitchell, J.L., Beebe, R.F., Ingersoll, A.P., Garneau, G.W., 1981. J. Geophys. Res. 86, 8751–8757] and Galileo [Vasavada, A.R., and 13 colleagues, 1998. Icarus 135, 265–275] but not as much as it has been recently reported [Simon-Miller, A.A., Chanover, N.J., Orton, G.S., Sussman, M., Tsavaris, I.G., Karkoschka, E., 2006. Icarus 185, 558–562; Cheng, A.F., and 14 colleagues, 2008. Astronom. J. 135, 2446–2452]. The asymmetry of the velocities in the vortex is a consequence of the interaction of BA with the zonal circulation and emerges as a natural result in high-resolution simulations of the vortex dynamics using the EPIC model.
