The NASA-JPL Deep Space 1 Mission (DS1) encountered the short-period Jupiter-family comet 19/P Borrelly on September 22, 2001, about 8 days after perihelion. DS1's payload contained a remote-sensing package that included a 1024 square CCD and a near IR spectrometer with ~12nm resolution. Prior to its closest approach, the remote-sensing package on the spacecraft obtained 25 CCD images of the comet and 45 near-IR spectra.

Photometric observations of the five medium-sized satellites of Saturn were obtained with the 60-inch telescope at Palomar Mountain Observatory during the Ring Plane Crossing in August 1995.

Spectral reflectances and geometic albedos between 2300 and 3250 A are determined for 45 asteroids from data acquired by the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite. The geometric albedos are consistently low, ranging from approximately 0.02 for C-type asteroids to approximately 0.08 for M-type asteroids. An exception is the single E-type asteroid (44 Nysa) with a geometric albedo of 0.3 at 2950 A. We find that the three major asteroid taxonomic classes persist into the UV. The taxonomic classes are distinguished primarily by their albedos, but S types are generally redder than C or M types. The first ultraviolet phase curved of asteroids are presented.

Topographic features affect the scattering properties of planetary surfaces by casting shadows and altering the local incidence and emission angles. Measurements of this phenomenon were obtained on the Cornell goniometer for both high and low albedo surfaces. For the low albedo surface, the decrease in reflected radiation due to topography increases sharply with increasing phase angle, whereas for the high albedo sample the effects are approximately constant between phase angles of 30 and 70 deg. The observations are in good agreement with a theoretical model in the case of the dark surface. However, for the high albedo surface the model overestimates the effects by a factor of 2, since it does not include the partial illumination of shadows by multiple scattering. For both high and low albedo surfaces, the effects of topography do not become significant until a phase angle of 30-40 deg.

A radiative transfer model, derived largely from the work of Hapke (1981) and Goguen (1981), is fit to Voyager imaging observations of Europa, Mimas, Enceladus, and Rhea. It is possible to place constraints on the single-scattering albedo, the porosity of the optically active upper regolith, the single-particle phase function, and, in the cases of Europa and Mimas, the mean-slope angle of macroscopic surface features. The texture of the surfaces of the Saturnian satellites appears to be similar to the earth's moon. However, Europa is found to have a distinctly more compact regolith and a more forward-scattering single-particle phase function.

The scattering properties of the icy satellites of Saturn are studied. Scans of intensity along the photometric equator near opposition are analyzed, and disk-resolved measurements of intensity are fitted to simple photometric functions. Histograms of the albedo distribution across the satellite disks are constructed, and the geometric albedos are determined as a function of wavelength. It is found that, at low phase angles, Rhea and Dione closely follow lunar behavior with almost no limb darkening. Mimas, Tethys, and especially Enceladus show significant limb darkening at low phase angles, which suggest multiple scattering is important for their surfaces. No satellite's surface can be described by Lambert's law. The darker satellites are redder, and the darker areas of each satellite are redder. A longitudinal dark stripe which represents a 15 percent decrease in albedo is situated near the center of the trailing side of Tethys. Mimas and Enceladus both have remarkably flat spectral reflectances into the ultraviolet.
