When multiple ornaments are expressed in both sexes, they are generally assumed to be maintained by mutual sexual selection and have a function in mate choice. In the Long- tailed Finch Poephila acuticauda both sexes exhibit multiple ornaments that vary in their expression in either size (pintail and throat patch) or colour (bill) between individuals and sexes. We assessed whether these ornaments are maintained by mutual sexual selection by exploring whether individuals in a wild population paired assortatively with respect to these ornamental traits, and the degree to which the expression of these ornamental traits was indicative of reproductive success. We found no evidence of assortative pairing with respect to variation in homologous ornaments or body condition in the two sexes. In addition, we found no effect of ornament expression on the reproductive success of either males or females. Our findings suggest that the expression of these apparently ornamental traits in both sexes of this species may play no current role in mutual mate selection or as indicator traits of reproductive performance. We are currently unable to identify any function for these very elaborate ornaments in either sex of this species and suggest that the typical assumption that all such traits have an ornamental function may need further examination. Elongated tails are elaborate plumage traits possessed by a variety of bird species. Sexual selection has long been the dominant hypothesis for explaining why certain species possess such long tails. During the past three decades, however, alternative hypotheses have been proposed and tested. Here, we review evidence, and the lack thereof, for four hypothesised functions of elongated tails in birds: sexual selection, aerodynamic enhancement, anti‐predation signalling and perch balancing. Sexual selection has received the most attention, though with inconsistent support. The other three hypothesised functions, in contrast, have gained less attention, with perch balancing remaining largely speculative. After reviewing and synthesizing information about these functions, we show that our current knowledge of avian elongated tails is not comprehensive. To advance our understanding of this topic, we suggest (1) devising a uniform definition of elongated tails that can be applied to a wide variety of bird species, (2) further investigation of less‐studied functions of such tails, (3) conducting meta‐analyses to discover the origins and trait correlates of elongated tails, (4) considering the possibility that elongated tails serve multiple functions simultaneously, and (5) testing unexplored functions of elongated tails. Elaborate avian feather ornaments have proven to be enigmatic because their function is often unclear, even though they are used in courtship and social displays. Male and female Whiskered Auklets Aethia pygmaea display on their faces four elaborate feather ornaments that serve both courtship and mechanosensory functions: three bilateral pairs of white facial plume tracts (superorbital, suborbital and auricular) and a slender black forehead crest, each consisting of several filoplumes. We studied left–right symmetry in the three antenna‐like bilateral white head plumes of 721 wild‐caught marked individuals (162 of known sex, 94 of known age that were 1–16 years old) during 1992–2009. Auricular and suborbital plumes were slightly more asymmetric in subadults (1‐year‐olds) than in adults (≥ 2 years old) but the opposite was true for superorbital plumes. Ornament asymmetries were not sexually dimorphic, nor were they significantly related to individual body condition, body size or age, except that superorbital plume asymmetry decreased significantly with tarsus length. Relative asymmetry (scaled for ornament size) of all three ornaments was negatively correlated with plume size, as predicted by some sexual selection models, but variation in asymmetries was large and differences between left (L) and right (R) sides in most birds were probably too small to be detected visually. Marginal mean absolute asymmetries (|L–R|) of super‐ and suborbital plumes were correlated with ocean climate during the preceding year when the birds would have been moulting, suggesting that fluctuating asymmetry at the population level might be a useful index of environmental stress in this seabird. The spectacular bilaterally expressed facial plumes displayed by Whiskered Auklets provide an interesting test case for questions about asymmetry in sexually and naturally selected traits. The authors discuss the alternatives to sexual selection in detailed monomorphic species of birds. They state that female-female competition for sexual or non-sexual resources could result to the development of elaboration in females, in which female ornaments bring information on fighting ability or dominance. They mentions that it is possible for long-tailed Finches not to mate assortatively since they have a signalling work in only one sex.

Recent climatic variation has led to a change in size or mass in some species. The Black‐vented Shearwater Puffinus opisthomelas is endemic to the California Current System, a highly variable system, giving us cues as to the effects of interannual variability on predators. Here, we report the results of a comparison of biometrics measurement in the short term, 4 years, with different environmental conditions. We found that environmental variability has a direct effect on the body condition of the species, affecting not only body mass but also wing length, with shorter wings as a carry‐over effect of adverse conditions. Avian species have developed a range of markers for transmitting information, among them ornamented plumage, behavioural patterns and conspicuous bill structures. Members of the marine subfamily Fraterculinae have some of the most visibly noticeable ornaments among seabirds, and some species have been recently found to possess fluorescent properties in seasonally acquired bill plates. We examined a member of this subfamily, the Rhinoceros Auklet Cerorhinca monocerata, for fluorescence in the upper and lower mandibles as well as the namesake horn grown in preparation for mate selection. In the context of sexual selection, animals have developed a variety of cues conveying information about the sex of an individual to conspecifics. In many colonial seabird species, where females and males are monomorphic and do not show obvious differences in external morphology, acoustic cues are an important signal for individual and sex recognition. Here, we study the vocal and morphological sex dimorphism in the King Penguin Aptenodytes patagonicus, a colonial, monomorphic seabird for which our knowledge about the role of vocalizations and morphology in mate choice is very limited. Data were collected at Possession Island, Crozet Archipelago, in a breeding colony consisting of about 16 000 breeding pairs. Using measurements of six morphological features and analysing acoustic parameters of call recordings of adult individuals, we show that King Penguins can be sexed based on a single morphological measurement of the beak with an accuracy of 79%. We found a sex‐specific syntax in adult King Penguin calls that provided a 100% accurate method to distinguish between the sexes in our study population. To confirm the method at the species level, we analysed calls recorded from King Penguin adults in Kerguelen Island, 1300 km away from our study population and found the same accuracy of the sex‐specific syntax. This sex‐specific syllable arrangement is rare in non‐passerines and is a first step in understanding the mate choice process in this species. Choosing the right mate is crucial for successful breeding, particularly in monogamous species with long and extensive bi‐parental care, and when the breeding pair is presumed to last many seasons. We investigated the degree of assortative mating in the Little Auk Alle alle, a long‐lived seabird with long‐term pair bonds and bi‐parental care for fixed (morphological) and labile (physiological, behavioural) traits. Using randomization tests, we suggest assortative mating with respect to wing length, extent of the white area on the upper eyelid and hormonal stress response (the difference between stress‐induced and baseline corticosterone levels). The ultimate explanations for avian brood parasitism have been studied intensively as a model system for coevolution, but little is known about the proximate mechanisms, for example hormonal regulation, underlying brood parasitic behaviour. In this study, we explored seasonal hormone profiles in two brood parasitic Cuculus species breeding in the Republic of Korea. As brood parasites have relatively simple breeding stages without incubation and provisioning, we predicted that during the breeding season individuals would exhibit similar levels of testosterone (T) and stress-induced corticosterone ( CORT), hormones that are known to be closely related to the transition of breeding stages. We also assessed how these hormone profiles were associated with traits such as body size and sex. Overall, male cuckoos showed similarly high T levels throughout the breeding season, as predicted, but individual variation became greater as the season progressed. Individual CORT levels tended to decrease as the season progressed, although the decrease was significant only in Common Cuckoos Cuculus canorus. We also found that male Lesser Cuckoos Cuculus poliocephalus showed a much higher level of T than females, as expected, but this sexual difference was not observed in Common Cuckoos. Our results suggest that the seasonal hormone profiles of avian brood parasites are likely to be similar to typical hormone profiles expected for non-brood parasites during the breeding season. This may suggest that not only the breeding cycle but also other factors such as social interaction may be affected by hormonal changes. Understanding the mechanisms that influence variation in sexually selected ornaments in seabirds has been challenging owing to the difficulty of capturing and sampling individuals outside of the breeding period when ornaments are usually grown. Stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopes were used to examine the influence of pre-breeding diet composition on ornament size in the Rhinoceros Auklet Cerorhinca monocerata, a socially monogamous seabird that breeds in the North Pacific. We analysed stable isotopes in adult feathers grown during the pre-alternate moult, which allowed us to infer diet composition during the pre-breeding (February–March) period. Females that fed more on inshore fish had larger horns than females that fed more on euphausiids (also known as krill; Euphausiacea). Body size was a stronger predictor of horn height in males than females, suggesting that ornaments may serve as different signals for each sex. This study provides evidence that diet during the pre-breeding period can influence ornament size and emphasizes the importance of understanding individual ecology throughout the annual cycle for determining the factors that influence mate choice and fitness. Female ornamentation has received little attention in studies of sexual selection. Traditionally, female ornaments have been explained as a genetically correlated response to selection in males. However, recent findings suggest that female ornaments may be adaptive. Southern populations of Pied Flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca are suited for studies of female ornamentation because, in addition to the white wing patch, some females also express the white forehead patch characteristic of males. We thus addressed the associations of these two ornaments with female age and with some health and breeding parameters in a Spanish population of Pied Flycatchers. Female ornament expression was not associated with haemoparasite prevalences, clutch size or parental provisioning effort. However, females expressing the white forehead patch raised more fledglings, and females with larger wing patches bred earlier, had higher number of hatchlings and showed increased levels of total serum immunoglobulins. Thus, these two unrelated epigamic ornaments may indicate some aspects of female quality. Further experimental studies could test the possibility that these plumage traits might function as signals to the males or might be used during female–female aggressive encounters in competition for nest-sites and mates. In sexually dichromatic birds, females may adaptively adjust the sex ratio of their offspring prior to hatching in relation to male ornamentation, for example, by producing more sons when paired to a highly attractive partner. However, to our knowledge no studies have investigated offspring sex ratio modification in species in which both sexes are ornamented, and it is unknown whether such a process would be adaptive. Here we examine variation in offspring sex ratio in the mutually ornamented Black Swan Cygnus atratus. Brood sex ratio was not related to the degree of ornament elaboration in either parent, or to extra-pair paternity. We suggest that parental attractiveness may not be inherited in a sex-linked manner, or may be largely non-heritable. Thus, females may not benefit from biasing the sex ratio of their offspring in relation to parental attractiveness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We studied the prebreeding moult and resulting plumage in a long-distance migrant sandpiper (Scolopacidae), the Great Knot Calidris tenuirostris, on the non-breeding grounds (northwest Australia), on arrival at the staging grounds after the first migratory flight (eastern China) and on or near the Russian breeding grounds (Russian data from museum specimens). We show that breeding plumage scores and breast blackness were affected not only by the increase in moulted feathers but also in the wearing down of overlaying pale tips of fresh feathers. Birds migrating from Australia and arriving in China had completed or suspended moult, but more moult must occur in Asia as Russian specimens had moulted more of their mantle and scapular feathers. Russian birds had significantly more red feathering on their upperparts than had birds in Australia or those arriving in China. The increase in reddish feathers cannot by accounted for simply by continuation of the prealternate moult. Instead, a third, presupplemental moult must occur, in which red-marked feathers replace some scapular and especially mantle feathers that were acquired in a prealternate moult only 1–3 months earlier. Great Knot sexes show little size and plumage dimorphism, whereas two other sandpipers that have supplemental plumages (Ruff Philomachus pugnax and Bar-tailed Godwit Limosa lapponica) are thought to be highly sexually selected. The article discusses about the assortative mating by tail streamer length in Red-tailed tropicbirds Phaethon rubricauda breeding in the Coral Sea. Most studies of intersexual selection have focused on the evolution of extravagant male ornaments. Relatively little attention has been paid to female ornamentation, despite the fact that both males and females of many species display similar ornaments that are akin to the profligate male adornments of polygynous species. Seabirds are typically considered to be model examples of monogamous birds in which parental care is shared equally, and thus would appear to be ideal candidates for studies of mutual mate choice.

Research into sexual selection and animal ornamentation has been largely directed at males in sexually dimorphic species. In contrast, there is relatively little empirical information on female ornamentation. Using the European Shag Phalacrocorax aristotelis, a species in which both sexes have an ornamental crest during pair formation, we investigated the evidence for (1) a correlation between crest size and breeding performance and (2) assortative pairing on crest size. Crest size appeared unrelated to age in either sex, though our sample of males did not include first-time breeders. The year of study was one in which overall breeding performance at the colony was poor. Females that did not subsequently produce a clutch had significantly smaller crests during the courtship period than those that did, suggesting a link between ornament size and current condition. This relationship was also significant in males. Among those birds that did produce eggs, there was a significant relationship between ornament size and laying date, again significant in both sexes, with early breeders having larger crests. Early breeding is generally associated with relatively high breeding performance in European Shags. Given that both males and females contribute substantially to parental care and that there will be intrasexual differences in quality, choosiness is likely to be favoured in both sexes, and individuals were found to be paired assortatively with respect to crest size.
