Abstract

New intense muon beams with flux several orders of magnitude higher than at present muon facilities would allow many novel experimental studies that were until now statistically not feasible. The investigation of the nuclear properties of short-lived nuclei using muonic atom spectroscopy would become possible. A feasibility study at RIKEN-RAL muon facility using the cold hydrogen film method to produce radioactive muonic atoms is in progress. A new surface ionization type ion source was recently installed to expand the variety of available ions. Encouraging experimental results were obtained with stable alkaline-earth and rare-earth isotope ions implanted in solid deuterium films. The latest results are reported in this paper. Abstract

Abstract: Muon-catalyzed fusion was investigated in thin solid deuterium films to determine the experimental feasibility of slow µ– production by detection of dd fusion protons as well as slow µ– collection utilizing a large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer. The spatial distribution of the fusion reaction in the film was extracted, and an optimum thickness for slow µ– emission was deduced. Collected 10 keV µ– were also successfully detected. However, the dd fusion yield being insufficient, we were not able to distinguish slow µ– via µCF from degraded µ–.

17. Towards slow μ− production via muon catalyzed fusion

Abstract

Slow µ- production via dd-µCF using a two-layer arrangement is investigated. To determine its feasibility, experimental measurements are now in progress using the muonic X-ray detection method. The following experimental steps are being considered: (1) measurement of the number of µ- stopped inside a solid H2/D2 layer by detecting pµ Ka X-rays, (2) “hot” dµ emission detection by placing a secondary target at a distance of 10–30 mm from the layer and by detecting specific delayed X-rays, (3) measurement of the disappearance of dµ emission as the added D2 layer is increased, (4) dd-µCF measurement by detecting fusion protons, and (5) slow µ- emission detection. Results of the initial test experiment are presented.
