The Niger Delta at the southernmost part of Nigeria, is a large and ecologically sensitive region. Natural and anthropogenic activities, such as subsidence, sea-level rise, upstream dams and reservoirs, dredging and overabstraction of groundwater, disturb this equilibrium, leading to adjustments in ecological conditions and boundaries. Ecological changes affecting large areas cannot be explained by local observation. Relating observed effects to causes of environmental behaviour therefore requires a regionalized data collection, that provides a broader perspective of the issues involved with resultant ease in the identification of common problems and formulation of effective solutions.

Understanding potential evapotranspiration (PET) changes under climate change is of great importance for hydrological research. The trends of PET changes and their driving forces were investigated in the Lancang (LRB) and Yarlung Zangbo (YRB) river basins, southwest China, using diagnosis graphs and the Mann-Kendall test. Analysis of variance was applied to examine the contribution of different climatic variables to PET. The results show that: (i) there was a statistically significant increase in PET in the period of 1957–2015 in the LRB, while it showed a markedly decreasing trend in the YRB; (ii) PET in both basins is fairly sensitive to wind speed, relative humidity, solar radiation and maximum air temperature, and the interactions between wind speed and relative humidity are also important; and (iii) the increase in PET in the LRB is due mainly to the increase in maximum air temperature and decrease in relative humidity, while declines in wind speed and solar radiation are the main reasons for the decrease in PET in the YRB.

Dealing with uncertainty is key in socio-hydrological analysis. As such, thinking through what uncertainties mean for whom and when is key. This discussion contribution introduces three issues related to defining uncertainties. The first issue deals with the problem of defining uncertainty as a given external reality. The second issue deals with who decides about relevant uncertainties. The third issue deals with the issue whether coupled human-hydrological systems can be seen as existing on their own. Finally, the text provides two examples of hydrological research that try to be explicit about our dealing with multiple (interpretations of) realities.

Flood frequency estimation is crucial in both engineering practice and hydrological research. Regional analysis of flood peak discharges is used for more accurate estimates of flood quantiles in ungauged or poorly gauged catchments. This is based on the identification of homogeneous zones, where the probability distribution of annual maximum peak flows is invariant, except for a scale factor represented by an index flood. The numerous applications of this method have highlighted obtaining accurate estimates of index flood as a critical step, especially in ungauged or poorly gauged sections, where direct estimation by sample mean of annual flood series (AFS) is not possible, or inaccurate. Therein indirect methods have to be used. Most indirect methods are based upon empirical relationships that link index flood to hydrological, climatological and morphological catchment characteristics, developed by means of multi-regression analysis, or simplified lumped representation of rainfall–runoff processe...

The increasing level of competition in scientific publishing arguably has a greater negative impact on hydrologists from developing countries and specifically young scientists. This paper discusses the constraints they face and offers suggestions to authors and the hydrological community about how these may be mitigated. These include a lack of access to resources to assist with creating good publications, the difficulty of publishing research based on relatively scarce data, a common problem in many developing countries, and a lack of familiarity with the process of publishing scientific material together with limited access to mentorship from experienced authors. A key point is to ensure that the research question addressed has a broad interest beyond the local study area. However, the more limited hydrological knowledge and the water resources problems of developing countries represent opportunities for internationally relevant research, particularly within the nexus between hydrology and society, or between science and practice. Both of these are high on the international hydrological research agenda.

This review adopts the position that many practical problems in managing water systems can now be adequately dealt with because of the advances in hydrological sciences over the past few decades. Hydrologists can be proud of their achievements. If this is accepted, what is the future for hydrological sciences? It is contended that this future lies in two main directions. One is the application of existing hydrological knowledge and techniques to water problems of the developing world. Several examples are given based mainly on experience in WMO/Technical cooperation projects. The second is in expanding the agenda of hydrological research to embrace other closely related fields. These include the seeking of better understanding of (a) the role of vegetation in the hydrological cycle especially in semiarid regions, (b) the relationship between climatic systems and water resources and (c) environmental hydrology, the linking of hydrological issues with water and air quality.
