The lack of acceptable temporal resolution of climate projections hinders proper assessment of the future performance of low-impact development (LID) systems in small catchments when continuous simulations are required (e.g. to evaluate infiltration). This study applied a simulation optimization approach to maximize infiltration with LIDs at minimum costs in a small urban catchment (0.67 km2). We coupled the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) with the Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) to determine near-optimal locations of bioretentions, green roofs, and permeable pavements. The temporal resolution of rainfall projections was disaggregated from 24 hours to 15 minutes using the Bartlett-Lewis rectangular method to evaluate the performance and robustness of the optimized solutions under different budgets and climate scenarios. Results suggest that LIDs can mitigate climate change impacts with relatively inexpensive solutions. This study aimed to assess the effective spatial characteristics of input features by using physics-informed, machine learning (ML)-based inundation forecasting models. To achieve this aim, inundation depth data were simulated using a numerical hydrodynamic model to obtain training and testing data for these ML-based models. Effective spatial information was identified using a back-propagation neural network, an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system, support vector machine, and a hybrid model combining support vector machine and a multi-objective genetic algorithm. The conventional average rainfall determined using the Thiessen polygon method, raingauge observations, radar-based rainfall data, and typhoon characteristics were used as the inputs of the aforementioned ML models. These models were applied in inundation forecasting for Yilan County, Taiwan, and the hybrid model had the best forecasting performance. Modularity as a system of separate and independent sub-tasks is the appropriate way to improve the performance of artificial neural network (ANN) models in hydrological processes. Using this approach, a block combined neural network (BCNN) structure incorporated with genetic algorithm (GA) and an additional decision block is suggested in this study. The optimum topology of embedded networks in each block was detected using a vector-based method subjected to different internal characteristics. This model was then applied on 879 bedload datasets, considering velocity, discharge, mean grain size, slope, and depth as model inputs over streams in Idaho, USA. The correct classification rate of predicted bedload using BCNN (89.77%) showed superior performance accuracy compared to other ANNs, and to empirical models. Results of computed error metrics and confusion matrixes also demonstrated outstanding progress in BCNN relative to other models. This study aimed to develop a new approach to build a functioning groundwater monitoring system by detecting a reduced set of observation wells (OWs) that optimally matches the hydraulic heads measured by other OWs within the field, namely as leader wells (LWs). The optimization models used in this work are the well-known genetic algorithm (GA) and modified genetic algorithm (MGA) and a new progressive combination (PC) model. Optimization was applied to achieve three sequential selection processes: best input combinations (BICk), LWs and core leader wells (CLWs). This approach was applied to the Assiut New Barrage (ANB), a megaproject located in Assiut city, Egypt. The results show that nine LWs among 33 OWs are adequate for regular monitoring, with a reduction ratio of 72.72%. Accurate prediction of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration is important for managing healthy aquatic ecosystems. This study investigates the comparative potential of the emotional artificial neural network-genetic algorithm (EANN-GA), and three ensemble techniques, i.e. emotional artificial neural network (EANN), feedforward neural network (FFNN), and neural network ensemble (NNE), to predict DO concentration in the Kinta River basin of Malaysia. The performance of EANN-GA, EANN, FFNN, and NNE models in predicting DO was evaluated using statistical metrics and visual interpretation. Appraisal of the results revealed a promising performance of the NNE-M3 model (Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) = 0.8743/0.8630, correlation coefficient (CC) = 0.9351/0.9113, mean square error (MSE) = 0.5757/0.6833 mg/L, root mean square error (RMSE) = 0.7588/0.8266 mg/L, and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) = 20.6581/14.1675) during the calibration/validation period compared to EANN-GA, EANN, and FFNN models in DO prediction in the study basin. Climate patterns, including rainfall prediction, is one of the most complex problems for hydrologist. It is inherited by its natural and stochastic phenomena. In this study, a new approach for rainfall time series forecasting is introduced based on the integration of three stochastic modelling methods, including the seasonal differencing, seasonal standardization and spectral analysis, associated with the genetic algorithm (GA). This approach is specially tailored to eradicate the periodic pattern effects notable on the rainfall time series stationarity behaviour. Two different climates are selected to evaluate the proposed methodology, in tropical and semi-arid regions (Malaysia and Iraq). The results show that the predictive model registered an acceptable result for the forecasting of rainfall for both the investigated regions. The attained determination coefficient (R2) for the investigated stations was approx. 0.91, 0.90 and 0.089 for Mosul, Baghdad and Basrah (Iraq), and 0.80, 0.87 and 0.94 for Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Johor (Malaysia). To improve the convergence of multiple-site weather generators (SWGs) based on the brute force algorithm (MBFA), a genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed to search the overall optimal correlation matrix. Precipitation series from weather generators are used as input to the hydrological model, the soil and water assessment tool (SWAT), to generate runoff over the Red Deer watershed, Canada for further runoff analysis. The results indicate that the SWAT model using SWG-generated data accurately represents the mean monthly streamflow for most of the months. The multi-site generators were capable of better representing the monthly streamflow variability, which was notably underestimated by the single-site version. In terms of extreme flows, the proposed method reproduced the observed extreme flow with smaller bias than MBFA, while the single-site generator significantly underestimated the annual maximum flows due to its poor capability in addressing partial precipitation correlations. A method is presented for optimal load dispatch in large-scale hydropower plants using a genetic algorithm integrated with simulated annealing. The genetic algorithm overcomes dependence on an initial value and provides parallel processing and fast convergence, whereas simulated annealing prevents prematurity and retrieving of the local instead of the global optimum. Thus, the integrated genetic-simulated annealing algorithm improves efficiency and robustness to obtain solutions close to the global optimum. We evaluated the proposed algorithm to determine the optimal load dispatch of 32 units of the Three Gorges Hydropower Plant in China. Test results show that the minimum water consumption obtained using the proposed algorithm is similar to the optimum obtained from a previously proposed "improved" genetic algorithm when the total load of the plant is relatively high. The estimation of sediment yield is important in design, planning and management of river systems. Unfortunately, its accurate estimation using traditional methods is difficult as it involves various complex processes and variables. This investigation deals with a hybrid approach which comprises genetic algorithm-based artificial intelligence (GA-AI) models for the prediction of sediment yield in the Mahanadi River basin, India. Artificial neural network (ANN) and support vector machine (SVM) models are developed for sediment yield prediction, where all parameters associated with the models are optimized using genetic algorithms simultaneously. Water discharge, rainfall and temperature are used as input to develop the GA-AI models. The performance of the GA-AI models is compared to that of traditional AI models (ANN and SVM), multiple linear regression (MLR) and sediment rating curve (SRC) method for evaluating the predictive capability of the models. Several models for simulation of water balance processes in semi-arid mountainous basins were developed by coupling different modules of existing water balance models (WBM). Snow accumulation and snowmelt rate relationships extracted from the McCabe-Markstrom, Guo, Rao-Al Wagdany and WASMOD-M WBMs, originally developed for basins with humid climate, were coupled with the Jazim WBM, primarily developed for arid basins. Karaj Basin, central Iran, with snowy autumn–winter and dry summer periods, was selected to assess model performance. The model parameters were optimized using a genetic algorithm (GA). All coupled models performed better than the non-modified (original) WBMs in the study basin. The coupled Jazim–McCabe-Markstrom model provided the best performance in simulating low and high monthly flows. It estimated the snowmelt runoff values more accurately than other proposed coupled models because the linear relationships used in the snow module of the McCabe-Markstrom model are more compatible with snow variations in the Karaj Basin. In this study, a data-driven streamflow forecasting model is developed, in which appropriate model inputs are selected using a binary genetic algorithm (GA). The process involves using a combination of a GA input selection method and two adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems (ANFIS): subtractive (Sub)-ANFIS and fuzzy C-means (FCM)-ANFIS. Moreover, the application of wavelet transforms coupled with these models is tested. Long-term data for the Lighvan and Ajichai basins in Iran are used to develop the models. The results indicate considerable improvements when GA selection and wavelet methods are used in both models. For example, the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) coefficient for Lighvan using FCM-ANFIS is 0.74. However, when GA selection is applied, the NSE is improved to 0.85. Water operating rules have been universally used to operate single reservoirs because of their practicability, but the efficiency of operating rules for multi-reservoir systems is unsatisfactory in practice. For better performance, the combination of water and power operating rules is proposed and developed in this paper. The framework of deriving operating rules for multi-reservoirs consists of three modules. First, a deterministic optimal operation module is used to determine the optimal reservoir storage strategies. Second, a fitting module is used to identify and estimate the operating rules using a multiple linear regression analysis (MLR) and artificial neural networks (ANN) approach. Last, a testing module is used to test the fitting operating rules with observed inflows. The Three Gorges and Qing River cascade reservoirs in the Changjiang River basin, China, are selected for a case study. It is shown that the combination of water and power operating rules can improve not only the assurance probability of output power, but also annual average hydropower generation when compared with designed operating rules. It is indicated that the characteristics of flood and non-flood seasons, as well as sample input (water or power), should be considered if the operating rules are developed for multi-reservoirs. The honey-bees mating programming (HBMP) algorithm is introduced as a novel tool for predicting suspended sediment concentration for the Mad River catchment near Arcata, USA. The paper also applies gene expression programming (GEP) as a comparison and shows that these two approaches can the produce transparent, nonlinear relationships between the independent and dependent variables. Some modifications have been made to the HBMP algorithm to improve its capability and efficiency. The results achieved from this method and GEP are compared with two different sediment rating curves based on regression techniques. Reservoir operation is studied for the Daule Peripa and Baba system in Ecuador, where El Niño events cause anomalously heavy precipitation. Reservoir inflow is modelled by a Markov-switching model using El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) indices as input. Inflow is forecast using 9-month lead time ENSO forecasts. Monthly reservoir releases are optimized with a genetic algorithm, maximizing hydropower production during the forecast period and minimizing deviations from storage targets. The method is applied to the existing Daule Peripa Reservoir and to a planned system including the Baba Reservoir. Optimized operation is compared to historical management of Daule Peripa. Hypothetical management scenarios are used as the benchmark for the planned system, for which no operation policy is known. Upper bounds for operational performance are found via dynamic programming by assuming perfect knowledge of future inflow. An accurate definition of river geometry is essential to implement one-dimensional (1D) hydraulic models and, in particular, appropriate spacing between cross-sections is key for capturing a river’s hydraulic behaviour. This work explores the potential of an entropy-based approach, as a complementary method to existing guidelines, to determine the optimal number of cross-sections to support 1D hydraulic modelling. To this end, given a redundant collection of existing cross-sections, a location subset is selected minimizing total correlation (as a measure of redundancy) and maximizing joint entropy (as a measure of information content). The problem is posed as a multi-objective optimization problem and solved using a genetic algorithm: the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA)-II. The proposed method is applied to a river reach of the Po River (Italy) and compared to standard guidelines for 1D hydraulic modelling. An alternative procedure for assessment of reservoir Operation Rules (ORs) under drought situations is proposed. The definition of ORs for multi-reservoir water resources systems (WRSs) is a topic that has been widely studied by means of optimization and simulation techniques. A traditional approach is to link optimization methods with simulation models. Thus the objective here is to obtain drought ORs for a real and complex WRS: the Júcar River basin in Spain, in which one of the main issues is the resource allocation among agricultural demands in periods of drought. To deal with this problem, a method based on the combined use of genetic algorithms (GA) and network flow optimization (NFO) is presented. The GA used was PIKAIA, which has previously been used in other water resources related fields. This algorithm was linked to the SIMGES simulation model, a part of the AQUATOOL decision support system (DSS). Several tests were developed for defining the parameters of the GA. The optimization of various ORs was analysed with the objective of minimizing short-term and long-term water deficits. The results show that simple ORs produce similar results to more sophisticated ones. The usefulness of this approach in the assessment of ORs for complex multi-reservoir systems is demonstrated. A nonlinear, multi-objective optimization methodology is presented that seeks to maximize free product recovery of light non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPLs) while minimizing operation cost, by introducing the novel concept of optimal alternating pumping and resting periods. This process allows more oil to flow towards the extraction wells, ensuring maximum free product removal at the end of the remediation period with minimum groundwater extraction. The methodology presented here combines FEHM (Finite Element Heat and Mass transfer code), a multiphase groundwater model that simulates LNAPL transport, with three evolutionary algorithms: the genetic algorithm (GA), the differential evolution (DE) algorithm and the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The proposed optimal free-phase recovery strategy was tested using data from a field site, located near Athens, Greece. The PSO and DE solutions were very similar, while that provided by the GA was inferior, although the computation time was roughly the same for all algorithms. One of the most efficient algorithms (PSO) was chosen to approximate the optimal Pareto front, a method that provides multiple options to decision makers. The water cloud model is used to account for the effect of vegetation water content on radar backscatter data. The model generally comprises two parameters that characterize the vegetated terrain, A and B, and two bare soil parameters, C and D. In the present study, parameters A and B were estimated using a genetic algorithm (GA) optimization technique and compared with estimates obtained by the sequential unconstrained minimization technique (SUMT) from measured backscatter data. The parameter estimation was formulated as a least squares optimization problem by minimizing the deviations between the backscatter coefficients retrieved from the ENVISAT ASAR image and those predicted by the water cloud model. The bias induced by three different objective functions was statistically analysed by generating synthetic backscatter data. It was observed that, when the backscatter coefficient data contain no errors, the objective functions do not induce any bias in the parameter estimation and the true parameters are uniquely identified. However, in the presence of noise, these objective functions induce bias in the parameter estimates. For the cases considered, the objective function based on the sum of squares of normalized deviations with respect to the computed backscatter coefficient resulted in the best possible estimates. A comparison of the GA technique with the SUMT was undertaken in estimating the water cloud model parameters. For the case considered, the GA technique performed better than the SUMT in parameter estimation, where the root mean squared error obtained from the GA was about half of that obtained by the SUMT. New mathematical programming models are proposed, developed and evaluated in this study for estimating missing precipitation data. These models use nonlinear and mixed integer nonlinear mathematical programming (MINLP) formulations with binary variables. They overcome the limitations associated with spatial interpolation methods relevant to the arbitrary selection of weighting parameters, the number of control points within a neighbourhood, and the size of the neighbourhood itself. The formulations are solved using genetic algorithms. Daily precipitation data obtained from 15 rain gauging stations in a temperate climatic region are used to test and derive conclusions about the efficacy of these methods. The developed methods are compared with some naïve approaches, multiple linear regression, nonlinear least-square optimization, kriging, and global and local trend surface and thin-plate spline models. The effect of data pre-processing while developing artificial intelligence (AI) -based data-driven techniques, such as artificial neural networks (ANN), model trees (MT) and linear genetic programming (LGP), is studied for Pawana Reservoir in Maharashtra, India. The daily one-step-ahead inflow forecasts are compared with flows generated from a univariate autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model. For the full-year data series, a large error is found mainly due to the occurrence of zero values, since the reservoir is located in an intermittent river. Hence, all the techniques are evaluated using two data series: 18 years of daily full-year inflow data (from 1 January to 31 December); and 18 years of daily monsoon season inflow data (from 1 June to 31 October) to take into account the intermittent nature of the data. The relevant range of inputs for each category is selected based on autocorrelation and partial autocorrelation analyses of the inflow series. Conventional pre-processing methods, such as transformation and/or normalization of data, do not perform well because of the large variation in magnitudes, as well as the many zero values (65% of the full-year data series). Therefore, the input data are pre-processed into un-weighted moving average (MA) series of 3 days, 5 days and 7 days. The 3-day MA series performs better, maintaining the peak inflow pattern as in the actual data series, while the coarser-scale (5-day and 7-day) MA series reduce the peak inflow pattern, leading to more errors in peak inflow prediction. The results indicate that AI methods are powerful tools for modelling the daily flow time series with appropriate data pre-processing, in spite of the presence of many zero values. The time-lagged recurrent network (TLRN) ANN modelling technique applied in this study maps the inflow forecasting in a better way than the standard multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural networks, especially in the case of the seasonal data series. The MT technique performs equally well for low and medium inflows, but fails to predict the peak inflows. However, LGP outperforms the other AI models, and also the ARIMA model, for all inflow magnitudes. Accurate forecasting of streamflow is essential for the efficient operation of water resources systems. The streamflow process is complex and highly nonlinear. Therefore, researchers try to devise alterative techniques to forecast streamflow with relative ease and reasonable accuracy, although traditional deterministic and conceptual models are available. The present work uses three data-driven techniques, namely artificial neural networks (ANN), genetic programming (GP) and model trees (MT) to forecast river flow one day in advance at two stations in the Narmada catchment of India, and the results are compared. All the models performed reasonably well as far as accuracy of prediction is concerned. It was found that the ANN and MT techniques performed almost equally well, but GP performed better than both these techniques, although only marginally in terms of prediction accuracy in normal and extreme events. Unconfined aquifer parameters, viz. transmissivity, storage coefficient, specific yield and delay index from a pumping test are estimated using the genetic algorithm optimization (GA) technique. The parameter estimation problem is formulated as a least-squares optimization, in which the parameters are optimized by minimizing the deviations between the field-observed and the model-predicted time-drawdown data. Boulton's convolution integral for the determination of drawdown is coupled with the GA optimization technique. The bias induced by three different objective functions: (a) the sum of squares of absolute deviations between the observed and computed drawdown; (b) the sum of squares of normalized deviations with respect to the observed drawdown; and (c) the sum of squares of normalized deviations with respect to the computed drawdown, is statistically analysed. It is observed that, when the time-drawdown data contain no errors, the objective functions do not induce any bias in the parameter estimates and the true parameters are uniquely identified. However, in the presence of noise, these objective functions induce bias in the parameter estimates. For the case considered, defining the objective function as the sum of the squares of absolute deviations between the observed and simulated drawdowns resulted in the best possible estimates. A comparison of the GA technique with the curve-matching procedure and a conventional optimization technique, such as the sequential unconstrained minimization technique (SUMT), is made in estimating the aquifer parameters from a reported field pumping test in an unconfined aquifer.
