Metacommunity structure depends on environmental and spatial factors. Stream fishes are constrained to disperse within dendritic networks and waterfalls and other barriers add resistance to species dispersal. We evaluated the importance of environmental and spatial effects on fish metacommunity composition, adopting different models of spatial distance: overland, watercourse, resistance (physical barriers), cost distance (watercourse resistance), and asymmetrical dispersal (considering flow direction). Fishes were sampled in 31 riffle sites of a small subtropical basin of southern Brazil (~ 250 km2 effective study area). Using redundancy analysis (RDA) and variance partitioning, we found the best model was the one including flow direction weighted by watercourse distance plus environmental variables (overall adj-R2 = 0.42). However, the explanation of fish composition was greatly improved by weighting spatial distance by stream channel sinuosity or height of barriers. Reach slope and width were the two significant environmental variables. Our study supports that dispersal, in addition to environmental factors, affects stream fish metacommunity even in a watershed of small spatial extent. Detecting spatial effects in a small watershed depends on considering realistic watershed features that affect fish dispersal in drainage networks such as waterfalls and other physical barriers, and distance along the watercourse and flow direction. Seasonal environments favor the evolution of capital breeding, whereby reproduction uses surplus energy from resources acquired during an earlier period. Consequently, reproductive effort in capital breeders is expected to depend on traits associated with energy storage rather than environmental conditions at the time of reproduction. Based on a 15-year dataset, we investigate the effect of phenotype (body size and condition) and environmental conditions (intensity of hydrological seasons, predator density, and density of conspecifics) on fecundity three capital breeding fish species from the strongly seasonal Amazon River floodplain: Psectrogaster rutiloides, Triportheus angulatus, and Acestrorhynchus falcirostris. Fecundity of all three species was strongly correlated with phenotype and modulated by unfavorable environmental conditions during the period of reproduction, especially high density of conspecifics. Fecundity was negatively affected by the density of conspecifics for small females of A. falcirostris, and for T. angulatus females with poor body condition. Fecundity of P. rutiloides declined during periods of drought when density of conspecifics was highest. A clear tradeoff between quantity and quality of oocytes was found only for P. rutiloides. This study highlights that reproductive allocation of capital breeders in seasonal environments is strongly linked to environmental conditions before and during the reproductive period. Phytoplankton in karst lakes is characterized by co-occurrence of chrysophytes (Chrysophyceae), dinoflagellates (Dinophyceae), and diatoms (Bacillariophyta) as the most diverse and abundant group. Using Reynolds functional approach in ecological phytoplankton investigations makes karstic lakes comparable and facilitates interpretation of their responses to changing environmental conditions. Accurate taxonomic identification to species level, based on precise resolution of specific characteristics by electron microscopy, is essential in order to correctly associate species into coda. This paper defines the most abundant centric diatoms and coexisting species in the phytoplankton of karst lakes in Croatia as a contribution to better description of phytoplankton functional groups dominated by centric diatoms. Several representatives for diatom-based Reynolds functional groups of four lakes in Croatia were described in this paper: Pantocsekiella costei and Stephanocostis chantaica for group A, Pantocsekiella ocellata and Cyclotella distinguenda for group B, and Stephanodiscus neoastraea for group C, together with their ecological preferences which clearly correspond to pertaining functional classification. Emphasizing species' trait similarities over differences, functional feeding guilds underrepresent functional diversity within stream communities. Species within guilds commonly overlap in their distributions and must partition their shared resources to coexist. Guild partitioning strategies may be revealed by the dissimilar responses the species show to environmental conditions, and these responses may be predicted from species-specific traits. To test this, I examined a grazer guild in a mountain stream dominated by three mayflies, Baetis, Epeorus, and Cinygmula. My objective was to determine how these species responded to gradients of current velocity, stream depth, and rock size and the abundance of algal food. I sampled 35 streambed locations and measured near-bed current velocity and depth at nine points at each location before sampling macroinvertebrates with a Surber sampler. Nine of the sampled rocks were measured for size, and benthic algae were collected from four of them. Multiple regression and non-metric multi-dimensional scaling (NMDS) revealed that each mayfly had unique responses to current velocity, depth, rock size, and algal abundance. Baetis correlated with depth, current velocity, and the interaction of these variables. Epeorus correlated exclusively with current velocity, and Cinygmula correlated with depth in interaction with other variables. Algal abundance by itself was a poor predictor of mayfly abundance, and NMDS indicated that individual species responses were not good predictors of mayfly assemblage patterns. Nevertheless, the mayflies' idiosyncratic responses to current velocity, depth, and rock size supported the notion that these variables are components of unique partitioning strategies. The hornwort Ceratophyllum demersum is a loosely attached to the bottom or free-floating vascular macrophyte, which builds dense stands in nutrient-rich waters. The hornwort stands are usually monospecific communities with a negligible contribution of other aquatic plants. However, some published literature data and our own observations evidenced the co-occurrence of densely growing Ceratophyllum and other macrophytes, including charophytes, which by contrast to hornwort are indicative of clear and less productive waters. Thus, the aim of this study was to identify the charophyte species growing in C. demersum stands and to define the environmental conditions promoting this co-occurrence. In 18 natural lakes of Western Poland, 60 stands of Ceratophyllum demersum were studied in the years 2001-2005. A total of 25 species built the studied stands. As many as eight charophyte species, 13 vascular plants, two moss species and one filamentous alga co-occurred with C. demersum. Among charophytes rare to Poland Chara polyacantha and Nitella gracilis were identified. Nitellopsis obtusa and Chara globularis revealed the highest frequencies along with Myriophyllum spicatum. Morphology of lakes combined with water quality, particularly transparency, appeared to regulate the coexistence of charophytes and C. demersum, macrophytes usually competing with each other. The aim of this research was to determine if population attributes and growth of an estuarine pulmonate could be used as bioindicators of environmental conditions in New Zealand estuaries. We quantified the size distribution of the deposit feeding Amphibola crenata in areas which contrasted in contaminant inputs. Within a small estuary, location and tidal level significantly affected A. crenata density. The highest mean abundances were found at the most contaminated site, close to the waste treatment discharge point, compared with lower densities at two river sites and close to the estuary mouth. The population structure was site-specific with juveniles present in historically contaminated areas. Growth of A. crenata held in experimental cages for 6 weeks was highest for medium length individuals from close to the waste discharge point and least for individuals from the estuary mouth. Sediment surface microalgal biomass (chlorophyll a), representing the potential food supply for A. crenata was greatest at the least contaminated site, and lowest at the most polluted site. The abundance, population structure and growth rate of A. crenata are attributes that may be used as ecological bioindicators, reflecting the complex environmental conditions within New Zealand estuaries. Fish and zooplankton populations of nine Ethiopian freshwater lakes were quantitatively sampled along a North-South gradient. Differences in altitude and latitude resulted in a temperature gradient from North to South. We tested three hypotheses: (1) the degree of zooplanktivory decreases with water temperature, i.e. from North to South; (2) the degree of zooplanktivory increases with the abundance of large-bodied zooplankton; and (3) the pattern of zooplanktivory in eutrophic Ethiopian water bodies differs from other tropical and temperate water bodies. Proportions of zooplanktivory in the fish communities did not show a geographical trend, but mainly depended on fish species, zooplankton density and the availability of large-bodied cladocerans. The degree of zooplanktivory in eutrophic Ethiopian water bodies differs from other eutrophic water bodies, both temperate and tropical. In Ethiopia, the degree of zooplanktivory can be both low and high, in contrast with other tropical water bodies where zooplanktivory is generally low and with temperate eutrophic water bodies where it is generally high. Temporary depression wetlands form a characteristic feature of the wet-season landscape in the south-western Cape region of South Africa, yet they remain largely unstudied. We hypothesized that the loss of sclerophyllous Sand fynbos habitat around these temporary wetlands causes in-wetland physico-chemical changes. We expected to observe a decrease in the concentration of humic substances in wetlands and a corresponding rise in surface water pH as fynbos cover decreases around wetlands, in this case owing to alien vegetation invasion. A set of 12 differentially invaded temporary depression wetlands within a Sand fynbos ecosystem in Cape Town were repeatedly sampled during the 2009 wet season. Multivariate gradient analysis techniques revealed associations between fynbos cover bordering wetlands and various physico-chemical and biotope constituents within wetlands. Univariate linear regression models reported strong and temporally consistent negative relationships between terrestrial fynbos vegetation cover and wetland pH and positive relationships with humic content. Results indicate that replacement of Sand fynbos with alien vegetation causes a reduction of humic input to wetlands, which in turn has knock-on effects on other wetland environmental constituents such as pH. Ghar El Melh (Northern Tunisia) is a shallow eutrophicated lagoon (total surface area 35.6 km2) which was one of the primary sites within the MELMARINA project. It is connected to the Mediterranean through a dredged opening and receives untreated sewage from two towns and a catchment of 131 km2. During the past decade the lagoon’s water quality has deteriorated and vegetation has changed. Ruppia sp. has diminished and green macroalgae (mainly Cladophora sp.) has increased. Frequent resuspension of fine alluvial sediment has reduced both water transparency and angiosperm ( Ruppia sp.) vegetation cover. Flash floods during winter deliver most of the load of sediment and nutrients from the catchment to the lagoon. Options for restoring the angiosperm cover in the lagoon have been analysed using a model system developed for the main part of the lagoon consisting of a 2-D hydrodynamic model coupled to an ecological model. The ecological model includes a combined description of eutrophication and sediment transport with rooted vegetation ( Ruppia sp.), benthic macroalgae, benthic microalgae, phytoplankton and suspended matter and nutrients. A separate sediment module includes pools of nutrients, organic carbon and fine sediment. Deposition and resuspension of the sediment pools are dependent on current and wind-generated shear stress. The load of nutrients and fine sediment was estimated through calibrating the model against measured water quality data and sediment deposition rates. The anthropogenic load from July 2003 to July 2004 was 33,000 tonnes fine sediment, 182 tonnes total N and 26 tonnes total P. A net import of sediment and nutrients from the sea was simulated, driven by the relatively high concentrations of suspended matter and particulate-bound N and P measured in coastal Mediterranean water outside the lagoon. Hydrological and hydrodynamic characteristics are important controls in all wetlands including coastal lagoons. Enhanced understanding of lagoon functioning can be obtained through the acquisition and interpretation of hydrological, meteorological and related data. The MELMARINA Project investigated links between hydrological and ecological conditions within North African coastal lagoons. It employed three primary sites: Merja Zerga in Morocco, Ghar El Melh in Tunisia and Lake Manzala in Egypt. Hydrological, meteorological and related data were acquired for these lagoons. Data included precipitation, evaporation, wind speed and direction, freshwater discharges into the lagoons, tides beyond the lagoons in the open sea, lagoon bathymetry and time series of lagoon water levels/depths. Data were acquired from secondary sources (including online archives) and targeted field survey and monitoring programmes. Interpretation of these data provides insights into the hydrological functioning of the lagoons and contributed to the modelling requirements of MELMARINA. The functioning of Merja Zerga is dominated by the exchange of water between the Atlantic and the lagoon. Large, tidally induced oscillations in water level are responsible for the inundation of extensive inter-tidal mudflats whilst the rapid replacement of water by exchanges with the sea diminishes the influence of freshwater inflows and winter rainfall. The smaller Mediterranean tides reduce the magnitude of lagoon–sea exchanges and result in much smaller water level oscillations within Ghar El Melh. As a result, this lagoon lacks the inter-tidal environments found within the Moroccan site and hydrodynamic conditions are more likely influenced by wind set up. This article describes the use of satellite imagery for identifying key environmental characteristics within three North African coastal lagoons (Merja Zerga, Morocco; Ghar El Melh, Tunisia and Lake Manzala, Egypt) and for detecting the major environmental changes within these environments. A combination of Landsat MSS, Landsat TM, Landsat ETM+ and ASTER imagery was acquired for the three sites for a period covering the last three decades (1972–2004). Following geometric correction and enhancement, the interpretation of the most recent image acquired for each of the three lagoons provides important insights into their current conditions. For Merja Zerga, these include the distribution of the largest channels which drain extensive inter-tidal mudflats and the two major depositional features associated with sources of freshwater. The distribution of marginal aquatic vegetation is highlighted as is the intensive use of the surrounding landscape for agriculture. Intensive agriculture around Ghar El Melh is also indicated. The influence of the Mejerda River, which was diverted away from the lagoon over 100 years ago, is shown to persist as a residual area of deltaic deposits in shallow water that has been eroded over time. Coastal processes including the direction of the alongshore sediment transport and the influence of engineering work associated with port construction can also be recognised. Within Lake Manzala, vegetated islands divide the lake into a series of sub-basins which can be clearly distinguished. The large influence of human activities within this lake can be identified and include reclamation for agriculture and the conversion of parts of the lake bed for fish farms. Generalized additive models are proposed for a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms for anchovy variations in abundance. Environmental variables derived from satellite imagery (surface chlorophyll, sea surface temperature and wind-mixing index), river discharge (Rhône River and Ebre River) and anchovy landings (landings per unit of effort) as proxy for abundance were used, and three fishing zones were defined along the Catalan Coast. A time shift among wind index mixing, sea surface temperature and chlorophyll was observed for these variables to be significantly correlated with anchovy. Results pointed out to processes that appear to greatly influence species abundance and affect different life stages of anchovy (conditions preceding reproduction, larvae growth and survival and recruits growth). A high proportion of anchovy LPUE variability could be explained by environmental variables. Thus, some univariate models explained deviance are more than 50%, even up to around 70% of anchovy variability. In several cases the deviance explained by a given variable was even higher at the longer time-lags. Among all univariate and bivariate models fitted, the model that best explained anchovy LPUE variability, 79% of total deviance, was a model proposed for the central zone, based on the additive effect of surface chlorophyll and Rhône River discharge, considering time lags of 15 and 18 months, respectively, for each variable. Macroinvertebrate communities in alpine streams have rarely been examined over more than two consecutive years or at sub-monthly temporal resolution during the summer melt season, in relation to a range of stream physicochemical habitat measurements. This paper addresses these research gaps by investigating the inter- (late melt season, 1996–2003) and intra-annual (bi-weekly; June–September, 2002–2003) community compositional stability and persistence of three alpine streams fed from different water sources (snow, glaciers and groundwater) in the Taillon–Gabiétous catchment, French Pyrénées. Inter-annual community stability and persistence decreased from 1996 to 2003; however, groundwater stream communities changed less than those in the main glacial stream. Intra-annual community stability varied spatially and temporally, particularly in relation to water quality variables (water temperature and suspended sediment concentration); water quantity (stream discharge) was less important perhaps due to taxa possessing adaptations to flow variability. The 15 most abundant taxa were consistently more stable and persistent than the entire stream community suggesting a common pool of taxa in these streams. Overall, the results support the view that streams originating from different alpine water sources are characterised by distinct benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages, and demonstrate the value of sampling at nested temporal scales (inter-annual to bi-weekly) for understanding how these stream ecosystems function. A relational database linking benthic diatom records, taxonomic nomenclature including synonyms, and corresponding environmental data has been built in MS Access. It allowed flexible and long-term use of a relatively important amount of data (~3000 records) gathered in the framework of the EC-funded PAEQANN project, gathering precise and documented information both about benthic diatoms and quantitative or semi-quantitative environmental data. Such a database has been shown to be a useful tool for the definition of benthic diatom typology at a multi-regional scale, the prediction of the impact of environmental characteristics on the structure of diatom communities, and additionally for a new insight on the auto-ecology of some taxa. This database could serve as a template for further work on diatoms and, after some implementation, on other freshwater communities. We studied the structural characteristics of the littoral epilithon in nine lentic water bodies at Hope Bay, Antarctic Peninsula, during summer 2002. At each site we measured the main physical and chemical variables and took epilithic samples for the analysis of dry weigh, ash, ash-free dry weight and chlorophyll a concentration. Distance from the sea of each water body was also considered. One site was selected for sampling lakes and ponds, except for Boeckella lake, where two sampling sites (A and B) were selected due to the heterogeneity of its littoral zone. Three stones for chlorophyll a analysis and another three to estimate dry weight, ash and ash-free dry weight, were taken randomly about 1 m away from the shore-line of each sampling site. Measurements of physical and chemical characteristics were obtained similarly. Water samples for chemical analysis were taken sub-superficially. Lakatos's system of classification and the Autotrophic Index were used to make functional inferences about the epilithic communities. Two PCA analyses were made to classify the water bodies according to environmental features and epilithic variables. In the latter, major patterns in data of epilithon were subsequently interpreted based on environmental data using external validation. Pingüi pond, located in the middle of the penguin rookery, was considered as a passive sample in both PCA analyses due to its extreme characteristics. Limnological features of the studied water bodies were similar to those of other Maritime Antarctic lakes. According to the Lakatos's index, 60% of the sampled lakes had high epilithic mass and a same proportion showed an inorganic type of epilithon The fact that 40% of the water bodies were autotrophic confirmed the importance of benthos as primary producer. According to environmental features, the well-defined groups of lakes emerged from the PCA were mainly determined by distance from the sea, pH, conductivity and salinity, and corresponded to the principal hydrological basins found in the region. Based on the results of the second PCA, littoral epilithon was affected by nitrate concentration and conductivity. In this ordination, water bodies from the same hydrological basin were separated probably as a result of a very complex inter-play of factors with a site-specific response to particular microhabitat characteristics.
