In small aquatic ecosystems, communities are strongly affected by environmental filtering such as disturbances and fine-scale heterogeneity of physicochemical properties. Aim of this study was to examine the effects of abiotic variables on phytoplankton richness in 30 subarctic rock pools in Finnish Lapland and further to test species-area and productivity-diversity relationships. We used Moran's correlograms to examine if phytoplankton richness and explanatory variables show spatial autocorrelation. We then related phytoplankton richness to physical, chemical and spatial variables (derived from Principal Coordinates of Neighbor Matrices based on either overland or water course distances) using generalized linear model (GLM). Correlograms did not indicate clear gradient-like spatial structures in the data. According to the best-approximating GLM, phytoplankton richness showed a highly significant positive relationship with total P concentrations, which differed by one magnitude among the pools, and showed also a marginally significant negative relationship with conductivity. Richness scaled nonsignificantly with pool volume. We conclude that rock pools with higher nutrient availability are capable of supporting more phytoplankton species in this low-energy ecosystem. We did not find any support for the species-area relationship across the pools possibly because the pools were similarly affected by random disturbances irrespective of their volume. The taxonomic composition and biomass of phytoplankton in the San Joaquin River, California, were examined in relation to water depth, flow regime, and water chemistry. Without substantial tributary inflow, maintenance demands exceeded algal production during summer and autumn in this eutrophic, `lowland type' river due to light-limiting conditions for algal growth. Streamflow from tributaries that drain the Sierra Nevada contributed to a substantial net gain in algal production during the spring and summer by increasing water transparency and the extent of turbulence. Abundances of the major taxa (centric diatoms, pennate diatoms and chlorophytes) indicated differing responses to the longitudinal variation in water depth and flow regime, with the areal extent of pools and other geomorphic features that influence time-for-development being a major contributing factor to the selection of species. Tychoplanktonic species were most abundant upstream and in tributaries that drain the San Joaquin Valley. Seasonally-varying factors such as water temperature that influence algal growth rates also contributed significantly to the selection of species. Phytoplankton dynamics in Lake Muggelsee, a eutrophic and polymicticlake in Berlin, and in the inflowing lowland River Spree have been comprehensively investigated during the last two decades. Zooplankton dynamics, nutrient supply, light climate, duration of ice cover and of summer stratification have also been regularly measured to help to explain phytoplankton development. The first period (1978-1990) was characterised by high nutrient loads and dominance of cyanobacteria from spring to autumn. Since then, loads of phosphorus and nitrogen have been lowered by 40-50%. Oscillatoria-like cyanobacteria (Limnothrixredekei, Planktothrix agardhii) were favored under hypertrophic conditions in both the polymictic lake and the river, but they have disappeared nearly completely after nutrient reduction. Development of these species depended on meteorological conditions and nutrient supply in spring rather than on seasonal averages of nutrient concentrations. Diatoms have became dominant and chlorophytes have increased their share of the biomass since the nutrient load was reduced. Species com- position changed even within the algal groups. Retention time of water and duration of thermal stratification of the water column modified phytoplankton structure. Mobile algae like Microcystis or Ceratiumoccurred in the lake during stratification periods. Otherwise, species composition in the shallow, polymictic lake was very similar to that in the inflowing lowland river. Species with high starting biomass, fed by high riverine import, resting stages or perennation were selected in this flushed system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
