Trophic polymorphism and temporal reproductive isolation are the drivers of sympatric differentiation in many fish taxa. We present a new case of ecologically based diversification of Arctic charr in a Transbaikalian mountain lake inhabited by reproductively isolated dwarf and normal forms. These forms differ in size, diets and morphology and breed, respectively, in April–May and in September–October representing a rare example of sympatric spring- and autumn-spawning charr pair. Microsatellite analysis reveals clear-cut genetic differences and low-level hybridization between them. Dwarf form charr are planktivorous and manifest uniform slow growth. Normal form charr, though genetically homogeneous, are highly heterogeneous in size-at-age. They are subdivided into omnivorous small-size and piscivorous large-size groups, which can be considered as incipient forms at an early divergence stage. As evidenced by back-calculated growth data, their size-at-age heterogeneity results from highly variable individual growth patterns, which include different combinations of slow and fast growth periods presumably associated with spawning and non-spawning years. It is considered that allopatric speciation proceeds slower than sympatric speciation and rarely results in rapid differentiation of populations. In particular, high intraspecific divergence in fishes from recently glaciated freshwater systems is typically observed within flocks of sympatric forms, not between geographically isolated populations. We present an alternative case of fast and profound eco-morphological and genetic divergence between two allopatric Transbaikalian populations of Arctic charr. In one, charr are predominantly piscivorous with sparse short gill rakers; in the other, predominantly planktivorous with dense long gill rakers. Gill raker number differs with no overlap and there is considerable differentiation in other meristic and morphometric characters. Both populations manifest exceptionally low variability at microsatellite loci coupled with substantial interpopulational differences in allele composition obviously resulting from genetic drift. Still, they form a monophyletic clade in microsatellite phylogenetic tree of Transbaikalian charr and share the same mtDNA control region haplotype, which evidences their common origin. According to genetic dating, the divergence of the populations occurred about 14 thousand years ago. Our study shows that high differentiation between local charr populations can emerge in allopatry over a short time if speciation is driven by trophic specialization and is facilitated by small population sizes. Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus (L.) complex has two or more sympatric forms in many lakes representing a subject for discussions on the mechanisms of their origin and taxonomic status. To determine the number of sympatric forms in three large lakes of the Norilo-Pyasinskaya water system (Taimyr) and their reproductive and phylogenetic relationships, 17 microsatellite loci, sequences of the mtDNA control region, and several morphological characteristics were analyzed. Our data indicate that eight reproductively isolated forms inhabit lakes Lama and Kapchuk, and at least three forms are distributed in Lake Sobach'e. The origin of the forms is associated with the secondary contact and hybridization of the European and Siberian phylogenetic lineages. The same names of the forms from different lakes of Taimyr and Chukotka, for example, Boganida charr and Dryagin's charr, may reflect their certain morphological similarity, but rarely close relationships. Our data indirectly indicate that introgressive hybridization and biogeographical changes of the lakes within the region in the last glacial and post-glacial periods played a significant role in the formation of a high Arctic charr biodiversity. Many life-history events in aquatic invertebrates are triggered by seasonal changes in water temperature, but other ecological factors may be important as well. To rule out the confounding effects of changing water temperature, we studied the seasonal dynamics of an aquatic invertebrate community and their effect on a top fish predator in a thermally stable freshwater spring in South Iceland. We sampled benthic invertebrates five times over a year and conducted a mark-recapture study on the top predator in the system, small benthic Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus (L.). We assessed variation in diet composition and feeding preferences by calculating the electivity and individual specialisation of each fish at each sampling time. There was a clear separation of winter and summer communities for the benthic invertebrates. The variation in prey availability was also reflected in the fish diet, with higher feeding selectivity in summer than in winter for the highly abundant Chironomidae larvae. In contrast, individual specialisation as a measure of intrapopulation niche variation was higher in winter when prey availability was lower. We furthermore found that groundwater amphipods might play an important role in the winter diet of spring-dwelling Arctic charr. In conclusion, seasonal variation in the invertebrate community is an important factor to consider and has the potential to alter the phenotype (e.g. growth rates) and behaviour (e.g. feeding preferences) of higher trophic levels. Catchment-scale variation between lake habitats has the potential to simultaneously influence the trophic niche and parasite community of fish hosts. In this study, we investigated the trophic niche and parasite community of sympatric Arctic charr and brown trout populations from two inter-connected southern Norwegian lakes at different altitudes. Arctic charr and brown trout occupied profundal and littoral habitats in each lake, respectively, whereas brown trout replaced Arctic charr in pelagic habitats of the lower altitude lake. Distinct between-lake differences in diet and parasite community composition were noted for brown trout; however, both fish species showed highly overlapping trophically transmitted parasite communities regardless of the habitats each species used. Our results suggest that environmental differences over relatively limited geographical distances have the potential to influence fish habitat use and parasite community structure. Parallelism in trophic niches of polymorphic populations of Arctic charr was investigated in two similar subarctic lakes, Tårnvatn and Skøvatn, in northern Norway. Analysis of eleven microsatellite loci confirmed, respectively, the existence of three and two genetically differentiated morphs. Three methods were used to describe their trophic niches: habitat choice and stomach contents for the recent feeding behaviour, and trophically transmitted parasites and stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) as proxies for the longer term trophic niche differences. The results showed a distinct segregation in trophic resource utilization of the different morphs. Tårnvatn has three morphs: a littoral omnivorous (LO), a small-sized profundal benthivorous (PB), and a large-sized profundal piscivorous (PP). In contrast, a novel Arctic charr morph was discovered in Skøvatn: a small-sized profundal zooplanktivorous-morph (PZ), which when compared to the sympatric LO-morph, had distinct stable isotope values and a contrasting parasite community. A parallelism in habitat choice and external morphology was found among the small-sized, deep-water morphs and between the upper-water, omnivorous LO-morphs in both lakes. There was a no parallel pattern in diet choice between the PB- and the PZ-morphs. Niche diversification of polymorphic Arctic charr can be altered by multiple anthropogenic stressors. The opossum-shrimp (Mysis relicta) was introduced to compensate for reduced food resources for fish following hydropower operations in Lake Limingen, central Norway. Based on habitat use, stomach contents, stable isotopes (δ13C, δ15N) and trophically transmitted parasites, the zooplanktivorous upper water-column dwelling 'normal' morph was clearly trophically separated from two sympatric deep-water morphs (the 'dwarf' and the 'grey') that became more abundant with depth (> 30 m). Mysis dominated (50–60%) charr diets in deeper waters (> 30 m), irrespective of morph. Mysis and/or zooplankton prey groups caused high dietary overlap (> 54%) between the 'dwarf' morph and the two other 'normal' and 'grey' morphs. After excluding Mysis, the dietary overlap dropped to 34% between the two profundal morphs, as the 'dwarf' fed largely on deep-water zoobenthos (39%), while the 'grey' morph fed on fish (59%). The time-integrated trophic niche tracers (trophically transmitted parasites and stable isotopes) demonstrated only partial dietary segregation between the two deep-water morphs. The high importance of Mysis in Arctic charr diets may have reduced the ancestral niche segregation between the deep-water morphs and thereby increased their resource competition and potential risk of hybridization. Anadromous Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, migrate back to freshwater in late summer to spawn and/or overwinter. While seasonal movement patterns during the freshwater residency period are generally understood, specifics of the short temporal activity patterns remain poorly characterized. This study used temperature and accelerometer sensing telemetry to describe the diel activity patterns of 21 overwintering anadromous Arctic charr in a lake in southern Labrador, Canada. Tagged individuals displayed diurnal activity patterns throughout the overwinter residency period marked by greater activity during the day than at night and distinctive peaks of activity at the beginning and the end of each daylight period. Diurnal patterns were interpreted as driven by prey and light availability in the upper water column because of known linkages between light and foraging efficiency. Movement activity also increased as a function of temperature during the spawning and ice breakup periods, but not during winter when increased movement activity was correlated with colder temperatures. No association was found between movement activity and body size over the size range (36.0–48.5 cm) of fish studied. The divergence of reproductive strategies is an important development toward intraspecific diversification. We describe contrasting spawning patterns of parapatric and sympatric Arctic charr forms in two interconnected lakes Kiryalta-3 and Kiryalta-4 in Transbaikalia for comparison to charr reproduction in nine more lakes of this region. In each Kiryalta lake, two charr forms (small and large) differing in growth and diet are present, in Kiryalta-3 they are morphologically more distinct than in Kiryalta-4. In Kiryalta-3, the spawning of the small form was recorded in autumn and spring suggesting two subpopulations; spawning time of the large form is unknown. In Kiryalta-4, both forms spawn in autumn. Overall, reproductive patterns of Transbaikalian charr vary greatly in spawning time, duration, location, depth, and bottom substrate. Different populations and sympatric forms spawn in early or late autumn, spring, summer, or during more than one season, including the littoral or profundal zone, over rocks or silt, and from 1–2 weeks to at least 7 months. Peak spawning time difference between sympatric forms can reach up to 5 months, and is correlated with morphological and genetic differences. The trophic ecology of piscivorous Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus (L.); charr) in the food webs of large subarctic lakes is not well understood. We assessed charr diets, parasites, growth, maturity, and stable isotope ratios in Fennoscandian subarctic lakes dominated by monomorphic or polymorphic whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus (L.)) populations. Charr density was low in all lakes, except in profundal habitats. Charr shifted to piscivory at small size (16–25 cm total length) and consumed a range of prey-fish sizes (2–25 cm). Cannibalism was observed in a few individuals from one monomorphic whitefish lake. Charr matured at 37–51 cm (5–8 years old), grew to 52–74 cm maximum observed length and 47–83 cm asymptotic length. Charr increased total area of convex hull and core stable isotopic diversity area of the fish community by 51–98% and 44–51% in monomorphic whitefish lakes, but only 8–11% and 7–10% in polymorphic whitefish lakes. The difference was due to increasing food-chain length in monomorphic whitefish lakes, whereas reliance on littoral carbon did not change. Charr were the top piscivores in monomorphic whitefish lakes, but played a less important role in polymorphic whitefish lakes, which contained a more diverse predator fauna. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Trophically transmitted parasites are known to impair fish growth in experimental studies, but this is not well documented in natural populations. For Arctic charr [Salvelinus alpinus (L.)], individual growth is positively correlated with food consumption. However, increased food consumption will increase the exposure to trophically transmitted parasites. Using a correlative approach, we explore the association between parasite abundance and the individual growth of Arctic charr from five lakes within the same watercourse. The studied parasite species differ in their life cycles and cost to the host. We predicted a positive association between parasite abundance and fish growth for parasites of low pathogenicity reflecting high consumption rates, and a negative association at higher parasite abundances for more costly parasites. We found no direct negative associations between parasite abundance and fish growth. The relationship between parasite abundance and growth was linearly positive for the low costly Crepidostomum sp. and concave for the more costly Eubothrium salvelini. In natural fish populations, the negative effects of parasites on fish growth might be outweighed by the energy assimilated from feeding on the intermediate host. Insights from long-term subsistence fisheries data can improve our understanding of the population-specific responses of Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, to environmental conditions. In this study, associations were found between temporal environmental variation and Arctic charr length- and weight-based growth using data from fish captured in the Hornaday River fishery. Overall, spring precipitation and summer air temperature appear to be the most important environmental influences on Arctic charr probably because of their respective impacts on the opportunities for acquiring surplus energy for growth. A pattern of decreasing age-related importance of temperature and increasing age-related importance of precipitation suggested that the coupling between growth and environmental effects varied by life-period. The changing prominence of each variable seems to result from the shift in apportioning energy for increases in length to increases in weight, likely as a result of the onset of maturation. The linkage of population characteristics to environmental conditions provides a baseline reference against which future data may be compared to determine the significance of any observed changes in population characteristics as a result of continuing ecological change in the north. The Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus populations of Windermere, England's largest natural lake in the Lake District of north-west England, have been studied since the 1940s. However, the species' cultural importance has a much longer history and these populations have been fished since 1223. As early as 1660, Arctic charr were exploited in a high-profile commercial net fishery and greatly enjoyed by locals and in a 'potted' form by wealthier members of UK society. However, overfishing led to substantially decreased catches and commercial netting was stopped in 1921. Local fishing for Arctic charr persists to the present as a small recreational plumb-line fishery using artificial lures. These fishing activities and resulting catches have long held great cultural interest for the local community and visiting national and international tourists. The cultural importance of the Arctic charr populations of Windermere has recently been the subject of national media interest that culminated in a 2017 documentary film highlighting environmental issues facing the Arctic charr and also celebrating the role of this iconic species in the cultural life of Windermere. In addition, international recognition of the Arctic charr populations of Windermere also contributed to the Lake District becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Foraging trait specialization is important for polymorphic Arctic charr and whitefish, but visual capabilities of different morphs are unexplored. Photoreceptor complements and absorbance spectra of rod visual pigments were studied by microspectrophotometry in two sympatric Arctic charr morphs and three sympatric whitefish morphs from two subarctic lakes. Four spectral classes of photoreceptor cells, rods and three types of cones, were found in all morphs of both species. Arctic charr rods had a pure A1 pigment (rhodopsin) with wavelength of maximum absorbance λ ≈ 511-512 nm and no significant differences either between littoral and profundal morphs or sampling times (January/August). Rods of littoral and pelagic whitefish had practically pure A2 pigment (porphyropsin), whereas profundal whitefish had chromophore mixtures with A2:A1 ≈ 0.8:0.2 in June, A1 decreasing to a smaller fraction in September. λ values of littoral and pelagic whitefish rods were similar and did not change significantly with season (539.3 ± 0.3 nm/539.3 ± 1.1 nm and 538.4 ± 0.4/539.8 ± 0.3 nm in June/September) but differed from profundal whitefish ( λ = 531.5 ± 0.8/536.7 ± 1.0 nm). The Arctic charr ( Salvelinus alpinus) is a relatively stenothermal fish that displays a high degree of biological plasticity. Although primarily a freshwater fish, there are anadromous populations at the northernmost limits of the distributional range. Developmental plasticity has both advantages and disadvantages for establishment in culture, with variable growth rates and early onset of sexual maturation at small size being distinctly disadvantageous. In addition, a requirement for water of low temperature for egg production (4-7°C) and early development limits the possibilities of farming Arctic charr outside of its natural distributional range. On the other hand, a tolerance of high stocking density (60-150 kg m) makes it a candidate for rearing in recirculation systems where effective use of both water and rearing unit volume are at a premium. It is possible to farm some strains of charr in either fresh water or brackish water (20 ‰) throughout the year, but year-round farming in full-strength seawater (33-35 ‰) does not seem to be feasible. Photo-thermal manipulation can be used to influence feeding, growth, salinity tolerance and the reproductive cycle. Water quality requirements seem to be similar to those of other salmonids. Parasite communities can show large differences in species composition between sympatric host species. Here, we assessed how divergent resource use of polymorphic populations of Arctic charr from two environmentally similar sub-arctic lakes was related to parasite community composition. Large similarities in parasite infections were found for both the reproductively isolated littoral-spawning omnivore LO-morph and the profundal-spawning benthivore PB-morph, reflecting cross-lake similarities in resource use. Furthermore, whereas the PB-morph had the lowest richness and abundance of parasite species in both lakes, a third morph, the profundal-spawning piscivorous PP-morph (one lake only), had the highest parasite richness and accumulated parasites by preying upon fish. These results highlight that host ecology and abiotic factors are important for structuring parasite communities. The dissimilarities in the local parasite species pool between the lakes suggest that stochastic events as well as transmission abilities are involved in structuring the parasite communities. The parallel divergent parasite infections between morphs may form an arena for parasite-mediated selection promoting the incipient speciation process in concert with other factors. The deep-water PB-morphs may avoid parasites by specialising in parasite-poor but low-productive habitats, while the piscivorous PP-morph aggregates infections of detrimental parasites through specialising on energetically rich but generally more heavily parasitised prey. The trophic niches of Arctic charr and brown trout differ when the species occur in sympatry. Their trophically transmitted parasites are expected to reflect these differences. Here, we investigate how the infections of Diphyllobothrium dendriticum and D. ditremum differ between charr and trout. These tapeworms use copepods as their first intermediate hosts and fish can become infected as second intermediate hosts by consuming either infected copepods or infected fish. We examined 767 charr and 368 trout for Diphyllobothrium plerocercoids in a subarctic lake. The prevalence of D. ditremum was higher in charr (61.5%) than in trout, (39.5%), but the prevalence of D. dendriticum was higher in trout (31.2%) than in charr (19.3%). Diphyllobothrium spp. intensities were elevated in trout compared to charr, particularly for D. dendriticum. Large fish with massive parasite burdens were responsible for the high Diphyllobothrium spp. loads in trout. We hypothesize that fish prey may be the most important source for the Diphyllobothrium spp. infections in trout, whereas charr predominantly acquire Diphyllobothrium spp. by feeding on copepods. The Arctic char ( Salvelinus alpinus) species 'complex' has fascinated biologists for decades particularly with respect to how many species there are and their geographic distributions. I review recent research on the species complex, focussing on biodiversity within northwestern North America, which indicates (i) what was once considered a single taxon consists of three taxa: S. alpinus (Arctic char), S. malma (Dolly Varden), and S. confluentus (bull trout), (ii) morphological and genetic data indicate that S. alpinus and S. malma, and S. malma and S. confluentus exist as distinct biological species in sympatry, (iii) sympatric forms of S. alpinus exist in Alaska as in other areas of the Holarctic, (iv) Dolly Varden comprises two well-differentiated subspecies, S. m. malma and S. m. lordi, in the eastern Pacific and the northwestern Canadian Arctic that meet at a contact zone on the southern edge of the Alaska Peninsula, and (v) Dolly Varden and bull trout consist of several population assemblages that have legal status as distinct conservation units under US and Canadian law. This research has significantly revised what constitutes the S. alpinus species 'complex', provided insights into the ecology and genetics of co-existence, and promoted conservation assessment that better represents biodiversity within Salvelinus. A geographically and genetically comprehensive analysis of relationships among putative taxa of Pan-Pacific Salvelinus is still required to better quantify the number of taxa and their origins. Arctic charr ( Salvelinus alpinus) is generally considered an inferior piscivore compared to brown trout ( Salmo trutta). However, we demonstrate that a recently described profundal spawning piscivore PP-morph of Arctic charr in a subarctic lake has evolved typical piscivore traits (i.e. large jaws, robust skulls), similar to the co-occurring brown trout but different from the sympatric littoral spawning omnivore LO-morph of Arctic charr. A few large-sized LO-morph, most large-sized PP-morph and trout constitute the piscivore guild, but they differed in prey fish selection. Of the fish-eating deep-water PP-morph, 52% had consumed charr, with a peak during the polar night period (68-80% in November-January). In contrast, the LO-morph and trout were mainly (~90%) inter-specific piscivores eating stickleback. Consequently, the PP-morph was the main charr predator and started to feed on fish at a smaller size and took larger prey relative to their body length than the trout. Stable isotope (δC, δN) ratios reflect the dietary specialisations in the upper-water (LO-morph, trout) and the deep-water (PP-morph) environments, besides the piscivorous behaviour of the PP-morph and trout. The existence of a shallow-water piscivore (trout) may explain the origin of this PP-morph, taking benefit of underutilised resources of small-sized Arctic charr in the deep-water habitat. Phenotypic variation in populations of fishes that inhabit postglacial lakes is often associated with trophic specialisations. A common sympatric foraging divergence seen in Arctic charr is into either plankton or littoral-zoobenthos feeding specialisms. In this study, we report a sympatric polymorphic Arctic charr population which is not centred on this divergence but instead manifests as a plankton (pelagic)-profundal zoobenthos foraging specialisms. The head shape of profundal fish was round and robust, the body thick set and pectoral fins long and wide. In contrast, the head of pelagic fish was pointed and slender, the body fusiform in shape and with short, narrow pectoral fins. There was no difference between profundal and pelagic fish in gill raker number. Body lipid content was significantly higher in pelagic fish as were the number or Diphyllobothrium cysts. The carbon isotope ratio was more heavily depleted in profundal fish. There was no dietary overlap in the prey items recovered from stomach contents of profundal and pelagic fish. We suggest the proximate driver behind the sympatric divergence was the successful exploitation of the profundal zone. The influence of interspecific interactions and habitat characteristics on the ecological niche of species' populations is a controversial issue in ecology. We explored the niche use of Arctic charr ( Salvelinus alpinus L.) in seven relatively large and deep lakes in southern Norway. We aimed to investigate how the presence of potentially competitive fish species, such as whitefish ( Coregonus lavaretus L.), perch ( Perca fluviatilis L.) and brown trout ( Salmo trutta L.), and the lake morphometry affects the littoral reliance and niche breadth of Arctic charr. Stable isotope (δC and δN) analyses showed that Arctic charr relied less on littoral food resources than brown trout and perch but had largely overlapping niche with whitefish. Arctic charr showed narrower niche use (i.e. less individual variation in δC and δN) than the other fish species in all seven lakes, particularly in communities where both littoral and pelagic competitors were present. Our results demonstrate that Arctic charr rely much less on littoral resources (<50%) in large and deep lakes in southern Scandinavia than in small, shallower subarctic lakes, and that interspecific interactions with both littoral and pelagic resource competitors can lead to niche compression of this generalist salmonid fish. A population of small-sized Arctic charr living their entire life cycle in deep water was recently found in Lake Skogsfjordvatn, Northern Norway. Their phenotype and life history closely resembles the profundal charr morph in another subarctic Norwegian lake, Fjellfrøsvatn. Fjellfrøsvatn has one littoral omnivorous and one small profundal benthivorous (PB) charr morph coexisting with brown trout, whereas Skogsfjordvatn has migratory salmon, trout, charr and eel populations in addition to threespined sticklebacks, resident trout and three resident charr morphs of which one is a large piscivorous profundal morph. We predicted that the small profundal charr morph in Skogsfjordvatn would have a similar trophic niche to the PB-morph in Fjellfrøsvatn and tested this by using stomach content and stable isotope (δC and δN) analyses. Profundal benthic invertebrates, mainly chironomid larvae, Pisidium sp. mussels and small crustaceans, dominated the diets, and the δC and δN values indicated almost identical long-term trophic niches of the PB-morphs in both lakes. The prediction was therefore supported. This seems to indicate that the small profundal Arctic charr morphs in these lakes have evolved in parallel, in nearly identical and stable habitat and dietary niches in spite of likely different ecological interactions within the contrasting fish communities. We contrast the genetic consequences of allopatric and sympatric divergence from the littoral spawning Arctic charr morph from Lake Fjellfrøsvatn. The littoral spawning Arctic charr has sympatrically diverged into a natural profundal adapted morph and via a recent (1930) translocation of about 40 adult Arctic charr established a new allopatric population in a nearby lake (Takvatn). The sympatric morph-pair in Fjellfrøsvatn was more genetically differentiated ( F = 0.121), the derived profundal morph had higher genetic variation (H = 0.740 ± 0.220; N = 4.87), and had a higher proportion of linkage disequilibrium among loci, than the Takvatn charr derived in allopatry ( F = 0.066; H = 0.584 ± 0.193; N = 0.29). The genetic differentiation in allopatry supports a scenario of rapid population expansion, despite genetic founder effects, whereas the genetic differentiation found in the sympatric morph-pair suggests that this divergence is older and supports a scenario of divergence under ongoing gene flow. We suggest that the differences between the two types of divergence may originate from temporal effects and differences in life histories between the two derived populations along with specific factors related to the initial stages of the divergence. Seasonal dietary shifts by Arctic charr ( Salvelinus alpinus (L.)) are common in subarctic lakes, but less is known about how the shift to pelagic zooplankton feeding during the growing season affects stable isotope ratios and mercury concentrations. We sampled Arctic charr, zooplankton and benthic macroinvertebrates from oligotrophic Lake Galggojavri, northern Norway, in June, August and September. Stomach content, age, total length, weight, condition and sex were recorded for all individuals, and liver and muscle tissues were sampled for stable isotope (δC, δN) and total mercury analyses. We predicted that a dietary shift to zooplankton would lead to depleted C and increased mercury levels in charr. Arctic charr consumed benthic prey in June, but shifted to zooplankton feeding in August-September. Stable isotope mixing models revealed increased pelagic reliance towards September. Mercury content in liver increased from June to September, whereas muscle showed opposite trend. In stepwise multiple regression analyses, mercury content in muscle was explained by fish length, month and δC ( R = 0.46), whereas in liver month, δC and δN were the main explaining factors ( R = 0.69). Temperature changes affect salmonids across a hierarchy of spatial and temporal scales, so that shifts in thermal river regimes may influence interspecific interactions in sympatric species. In Northern Norway, anadromous populations of Arctic charr ( Salvelinus alpinus) and Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar) coexist, but in recent years landings of Arctic charr have decreased, while those of Atlantic salmon have been stable or even increased. Here we studied relative abundance, habitat use and growth rate of sympatric stream-living juveniles of both species in Veidnes River, where they are the only fish species present. In 1998/2000, juvenile Arctic charr dominated, especially in the upper and colder part of the river. In 2010, however, Atlantic salmon juveniles were now prominent in all habitat types, whereas nearly all Arctic charr were captured in slow-flowing water near the river bank. Summer air temperature has increased in the region during the last decade. Positive correlations between summer temperatures and back-calculated growth rates were documented in both species, but the growth response was significantly higher in Atlantic salmon. Accordingly, we suggest that juvenile Atlantic salmon may benefit from a warmer climate in northernmost Norway, at the expense of the more cold-water-adapted Arctic charr. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The occurrence of trophically transmitted intestinal parasites in Arctic charr was analyzed from data material collected over two decades from Lake Takvatn, northern Norway. The main objectives were to investigate (i) between-year variation in parasite infracommunity composition, (ii) between-host variation in infracommunity composition, and (iii) possible interspecific interaction between parasites. The trematode Crepidostomum spp. and the cestode Eubothrium salvelini were most prevalent and had the highest mean intensities whereas the cestodes Proteocephalus sp. and Cyathocephalus truncatus were uncommon taxa. No clear indication of interspecific parasite interactions was evident. By far the most frequent infracommunity composition was E. salvelini co-existing with only Crepidostomum spp. Despite some indications of individual dietary specialization in Arctic charr, this strong species co-occurrence suggests that the majority of fish had been preying on the very different intermediate hosts of both parasites. Overall, even though some sporadic between-year variation was present, no long-term or cyclical variation in infracommunity composition and mean intensity was revealed, suggesting that the host-parasite system is in a steady state. Minor between-year variation was likely the result of changes in habitat and dietary utilization by Arctic charr, possibly linked to documented changes in the fish community structure of the lake. Three genetically discrete morphs of Arctic charr in Loch Rannoch, Scotland originated from a recent divergence within the lake (in situ) (piscivore and benthivore morphs) and from secondary contact of two older lineages (ex situ; a planktivore-piscivore/benthivore divergence). To test if the expression of traits with strong functional roles was linked to the age of the divergence, fin and gill anatomy, and dentition were quantified and compared across morphs. Five additional working hypotheses suggesting a rank order of trait expression amongst morphs were also tested. The planktivorous morph had more rays in the dorsal and pectoral fins, longer gill rakers (but not more) as well as a smaller gill cavity than the other two morphs. The piscivorous morph had more palatine teeth and longer teeth on the mandible, pre-maxillary and glossohyal bones, and a larger buccal cavity. These differences indicate a differential response to selection in these functional anatomical features most likely related to morph foraging specialisms. Notably, between-morph divergences in the expression of these traits were not simply linked to the length of divergence between morphs and have arisen equally quickly in the recent (in situ ) divergence as they have in older, ex situ divergences. Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus (L.), occur as anadromous, resident, and landlocked populations within their circumpolar distribution. While resident Arctic charr reside in freshwater their entire life, anadromous Arctic charr migrate to sea in the summer due to the increased resource availability, but return to freshwater to overwinter and/or spawn. The migratory behaviour in Arctic charr is generally restricted to the northern range of their distribution area. The objective of this study was to estimate the amount of straying and contemporary gene flow among anadromous Arctic charr from eight river systems in northern Norway to illuminate the role of straying for the contemporary genetic stability of the populations. The results revealed that Arctic charr frequently stray among watercourses, especially among those in close geographical proximity, although strays were found nearly 500 km from their river of origin. While straying was revealed among six river systems, the results also revealed limited or no contemporary gene flow among the nine populations identified in the eight sampled river systems. We assessed the food resource partitioning of three fish species (Arctic charr, Atlantic salmon and alpine bullhead) living in sympatry in a subarctic river. Fish were sampled monthly during the ice-free season (May-October), and dietary overlap among the species was calculated according to Schoener's index. In October, the diet overlap among all three species was high (>70%). In contrast, large to modest food resource partitioning occurred among Arctic charr and the other two species from May to September (27-59% overlap), whereas there was a distinct diet overlap between Atlantic salmon and alpine bullhead in May, August and September (>64%), but not in July (53%). Surface prey (terrestrial and emerged aquatic insects), probably caught at the surface, were important for Arctic charr in August and September (24.9 and 46.6%, respectively), whereas the other fish species mainly fed on Apatania stigmatella, Mystrophora intermedia and Ephemerella aurivilli. Alpine bullhead seemed to feed close to the bottom, Atlantic salmon used both the bottom and water of various depths, whereas Arctic charr showed the greatest capacity to forage at the water surface. Loch Leven, U.K., contains brown trout (Salmo trutta), eel (Anguilla anguilla), minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus), perch (Perca fluviatilis), pike (Esox lucius) and three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), with brook lamprey (Lampetra planeri) and stone loach (Barbatula barbatula) also present in its tributaries. Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus), Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and flounder (Platichthys flesus) are now extinct. The brown trout population has supported a world-renowned recreational fishery for over a century, although a decline in fishery performance led to extensive stocking between 1983 and 2006, including with non-native rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). This review combines historical information with contemporary gill-net and hydroacoustic surveys. In 2008, brown trout, perch and three-spined sticklebacks were abundant, but pike and stone loach were rare. The obstruction of migratory routes was probably responsible for the loss of Atlantic salmon and flounder, while a lowering of water level likely caused the extinction of Arctic charr and contributed to a reduction in pike abundance. Perch abundance has fluctuated markedly, being influenced by disease and eutrophication, although a reduction in nutrients and associated recovery of macrophytes are likely to have benefitted this species. In France, the Arctic charr ( Salvelinus alpinus) is native in only two lakes (Lakes Bourget and Geneva), in the most southerly part of its distribution area. It is a profundal morph living at depths of between 30 and 100 m in Lake Geneva. Following considerable stocking of Lake Geneva with juvenile Arctic charr and some good results during the 1980s, catches are currently declining. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain this decrease, but the potential influence of warming of the lake in the 1990s has not been considered. This article studies the relationship between the strength of the cohorts and the temperature in Lake Geneva from 1992 to 2002, and discusses the various potential causes of the population collapse observed. The findings reveal close correlation between water temperature and the strength of the cohorts. Due to extensive cannibalism, Arctic char ( Salvelinus alpinus (L.)) often represent the two highest trophic levels in Arctic freshwater ecosystem where Arctic char often is the only freshwater fish present. There is a general lack of char stock size and production estimates from Arctic lakes although high catchability and late maturation of large piscivorous individuals raise considerable management challenges because large growing forms are a valued resource. Here, we use mark-recapture to estimate the biomass of both invertebrate feeding dwarfs (60–150 mm) and their cannibalistic conspecifics (>150 mm) in a small Arctic lake at Bear Island (74.5°N, 19.0°E; 11.3 ha; mean depth 1.8 m). Biomass was 10.1 and 2.0 kg ha−1 and production was 2.1 and 0.5 kg ha−1 yr−1 for dwarfs and cannibals, respectively. All the production of invertebrate feeding small char was removed by the cannibals. The low production of the Arctic lake ecosystems combined with high catchability of large piscivorous char indicates that these stocks may be particularly vulnerable to exploitation. A species-specific fractionation equation for Arctic charr ( Salvelinus alpinus (L.)) was developed experimentally for use in ecological studies of temperature-driven phenologies for the species. Juvenile Arctic charr were reared in controlled conditions at different temperatures (2–14°C), with three replicates of each temperature. Otoliths from the fish and water samples from the chambers were analysed for oxygen isotope composition and used to estimate temperature-dependent fractionation equations relating the isotopic ratio to rearing temperature. A linear and a second order polynomial relationship were estimated and validated using comparable Arctic charr data from another study. Temperatures predicted using the polynomial equation were not significantly different from recorded experimental temperatures, whereas with the linear equation there were significant differences between the predicted and measured temperatures. The polynomial equation also showed the least bias as measured by mean predictive error. Statistical comparisons of the polynomial fractionation equation to a similarly estimated equation for brook charr ( Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitchill)) indicated significant differences. Results imply the need for species-specific fractionation equations, even for closely related fish. Results further suggest the polynomial form of the fractionation equation will facilitate more accurate characterisation of water temperatures suitable for use in ecological studies of temperature-driven phenologies of Arctic charr. Many animal species show individual foraging specialisms when potential prey requires prey-specific foraging strategies. Arctic charr are often found as benthic (macroinvertebrate) or pelagic (plankton) foraging specialists. Here, we tested specifically if given a choice of prey with different characteristics individuals would specialise in a single prey type and if individuals would chose prey based on their expressed trophic morphology, in a laboratory experiment and in a field observation. When offered a choice of benthic and pelagic prey most individuals (73%) showed that 100% fidelity to a single foraging source. Naïve individuals (not previously exposed to natural prey) with more robust head and mouth shape were more likely to forage on a benthic prey source (chironomids). In contrast, individuals with a more fusiform body, larger eye, but more slender head shape were more likely to specialise on pelagic prey ( Artemia). Field observations of a natural population of Arctic charr from Loch Doine identified specialists foraging on either plankton or macrobenthos (on the basis of stomach contents) and some generalists. Morphological analysis showed that significant differences in shape reflecting recent foraging history. These results support the hypothesis that the availability of discrete, different prey types results in discrete foraging specialisms which in turn may result in the expression of discrete alternative phenotypes through subsequent plastic ontogenetic process. We conclude that this provides a partial explanation for why ecologically driven evolution processes are particularly prevalent in fishes from post-glacial lake systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several studies have revealed relationships between annual size-at-catch and various climatic factors for anadromous Arctic charr ( Salvelinus alpinus) captured as part of the commercial fishery at Nain, Labrador (Nunatsiavut), Canada. Here, changes in growth patterns are examined among cohorts subject to differing lifetime temperature regimes, thereby considering the cumulative effects of past climate conditions instead of only annual fluctuations in temperature. An anomalous cold period, occurring in the Labrador region during the 1990s, was associated with a reduction in mean size-at-age for cohorts passing through this period. The physiological effect of temperature on growth was further exacerbated by a coincident change in the regional availability of preferred prey species. Mean sizes-at-age for cohorts experiencing a subsequent warm period, however, were not significantly larger than those observed for cohorts experiencing average cumulative lifetime temperatures. The latter result may be indicative of broader changes in ecosystem dynamics, exploitation rates and behaviour that coincided with the increase in temperature. The growth changes observed for the Nain Arctic charr stock complex indicate that climatic fluctuations can have both direct physiological effects on Arctic charr growth patterns as well as indirect effects through changes in ecosystem dynamics such as prey availability. Arctic charr and European whitefish are common species in northern Europe, but have a parapatric distribution pattern and rarely coexist in substantial densities within the same lake. Whitefish is considered to be the strongest competitor, usually causing competitive relegation or exclusion of co-occurring charr. Some exceptions do however occur, and the present study addresses niche utilization and resource partitioning of an Arctic charr population coexisting with whitefish and grayling in a subarctic lake. There was a distinct resource partitioning with respect to habitat and diet utilization of the three species. Grayling were exclusively caught in shallow near-shore areas, feeding chiefly on surface insects and Trichoptera larvae. Whitefish dominated in all lake habitats, feeding predominantly on small-sized planktonic and benthic crustaceans. Arctic charr were mainly found along the benthic profile, feeding predominantly on insects and snails and showing a low dietary overlap with whitefish which appeared to have monopolised the zooplankton resources. The highly restricted trophic niche of Arctic charr suggests a severe competitive impact due to the presence of whitefish, but the coexistence of the two species may be facilitated by the presence of grayling. Biological data from 66 populations of Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, from eastern North America were analysed to test the applicability of the countergradient hypothesis as an explanation of differences in seasonally adjusted growth rates. Samples were obtained along a 37° latitudinal gradient and partitioned among anadromous, normal lacustrine, and dwarf lacustrine Arctic charr morphotypes. Models relating length-at-age or age-specific growth rates to latitude were estimated for each morphotype. Length-at-age declined with latitude for anadromous and lacustrine charr. Age-specific growth rates also varied with latitude, particularly for normal lacustrine charr. Results of analyses provide support for the countergradient hypothesis in growth performance of normal lacustrine morphotypes, where northern populations compensate for the shorter growth season with a greater rate of growth than southern populations. Anadromous charr exhibited equivocal evidence of countergradient variation, while results for dwarf lacustrine Arctic charr populations were inconclusive owing to the limited range of ages, and latitudes for which data were available. The trophic niche and parasite infection of Arctic charr ( Salvelinus alpinus) were explored in two lakes with sympatric burbot ( Lota lota) and two lakes without burbot in subarctic Norway. The CPUE of burbot and charr were similar in one lake, but burbot had a low population density in the other. Burbot were benthivorous in both lakes. Other co-occurring species like brown trout ( Salmo trutta), Atlantic salmon parr ( Salmo salar), grayling ( Thymallus thymallus) and minnow ( Phoxinus phoxinus) were also benthivores. At high densities, benthivorous burbot forced the whole Arctic charr population to utilise mainly the limnetic trophic niche. In contrast, at low burbot density or without burbot present, Arctic charr were primarily benthivorous in the littoral zone. Thus, a clear interactive segregation in diet was observed between Arctic charr and burbot at high burbot densities. There was also a high predation pressure from burbot on young Arctic charr along the benthic zones. The extensive use of zooplankton as prey caused a high parasite infection pressure of copepod transmitted Diphyllobothrium spp. larvae, with the potential for high negative impact on the Arctic charr population. As the benthivore trophic niche was occupied by burbot, the ecological opportunities for polymorphism with benthivorous ecotypes or morphs of Arctic charr were probably prevented. Therefore, the sympatry with burbot seems to have large ecological and evolutionary consequences for this Arctic charr population compared with neighbouring lakes where burbot is absent. The UK lies towards the southernmost distribution limit of the circumpolar Arctic charr ( Salvelinus alpinus), and native populations of high national conservation value occur in all four component countries. However, given the temperature requirements of this species and the already relatively mild UK climate, there is strong reason to expect a significant negative impact of climate change on local populations. Data were assembled from repeated Arctic charr population assessments using combinations of hydroacoustics, gill netting, entrapment records and fisheries catches at five Scottish populations, five English populations and one Welsh population. These data were then used to test the hypotheses that there has been a widespread decline of Arctic charr in the UK and that it can be attributed at least in part to climate change. Ten of the 11 studied populations exhibited significant 1990-onwards declines in abundance, while only the most northerly population showed a significant increase. Overall, there was a significant positive relationship between the observed population decline ranking and a vulnerability to climate change ranking based on water body latitude, altitude and mean depth. These observations support the hypothesis that this species has suffered a recent and widespread decline in the UK, and although additional factors are undoubtedly also involved in some specific cases, climate change is a significant factor. Stable coexistence of Arctic charr and whitefish does occur in a number of native lake fish communities in Scandinavia. Even so, whitefish introductions into Arctic charr lakes have resulted in serious decline and possibly local extinction of Arctic charr. In this article, we analyze the habitat use and diet of the two species in five Norwegian lakes differing in basin shape and environmental conditions. In two of the lakes, both species are native, and appear to live in a relatively stable coexistence. Here, whitefish mainly occupy the littoral and upper pelagic zone, while Arctic charr live in the deeper habitats. Diets are generally quite different in terms of the zooplankton species eaten. In the three other lakes, either whitefish or both species have been introduced. In the shallowest lake, habitat segregation is similar to that seen in the pristine lakes, although Arctic charr appears to be on the brink of extinction. In the remaining two lakes, however, Arctic charr dominates, and occurs in higher numbers than whitefish in all the habitats. Our observations indicate that coexistence of the two species in oligotrophic and relatively pristine lakes requires an extensive profundal zone to serve as a refugium for Arctic charr. If the littoral zone is rendered inaccessible or unprofitable for whitefish due to dominance of a third competitor or predator, or as a result of lake regulation, then Arctic charr may be the dominant species. Arctic charr is the only freshwater fish in most of the High Arctic, with both resident, anadromous, and landlocked populations present. The anadromous Arctic charr is particularly highly sought-after, and has been an important food source for people living in Arctic regions. A recent decline in harvest in many areas has been related to over-exploitation by extensive gillnetting. Very few studies, if any, have estimated the gillnet efficiency for harvesting anadromous Arctic charr. In this study, all anadromous Arctic charr ascending the lake, Linnévatn, in western Spitsbergen, Svalbard, were marked over a period of 5 weeks, in July–August 2008. Recaptures in the lake were obtained by gillnetting with three mesh sizes (39, 45, and 52 mm measured knot-to-knot) during three periods. The total number of anadromous charr in the lake was estimated by both Schnabel and Petersen mark-recapture methods. The catchability increased significantly with fish size. Anadromous charr in the length-class 40.0–56.9 cm captured by the legal mesh size in Svalbard lakes (52 mm) had a mean catchability of 0.0023 per gillnet per 2 h fishing effort, and the catch quota which is set at 40 charr for Linnévatn by the Governor of Svalbard, would have been filled by less than five gillnets, each used for 6 h. Although this short fishing time may give an overestimation of catchability due to the avoidance of gear saturation, the high catchability values still indicate that anadromous Arctic charr populations may be extremely vulnerable to gillnetting. This comparative study explores how low temperatures affect the mortality and growth of first generation hatchery-reared progeny of subarctic populations of Arctic charr ( Salvelinus alpinus L.) and European whitefish ( Coregonus lavaretus L.). Replicate fish groups where held under simulated natural light regimes (70°N) at three constant temperatures (1, 3 and 6°C). The mortality of Arctic charr was low (≤1.4%) at all temperature treatments, whereas the mortality of whitefish increased with decreasing temperature from 6% at 6°C to 33% at 1°C. The Arctic charr exhibited higher growth rates than whitefish at all three temperature regimes. All groups of Arctic charr increased in weight, whereas whitefish held at 1°C did not gain weight throughout the experimental period of 133 days. Arctic charr exhibited a large intraspecific variability in growth leading to large variations in size-structure, whereas whitefish in contrast showed very homogenous growth and size-structure patterns; a dissimilarity probably related to species-specific differences in antagonistic behaviour. Evidently, Arctic charr are more cold water adapted than whitefish and are able to maintain growth at extremely low temperatures. Three ecologically and morphologically distinct forms of Arctic charr ( Salvelinus alpinus L.) have been identified in Loch Rannoch, Scotland, whose evolutionary status and origins are incompletely understood. A study was made of restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLPs) detected variation in the D-loop, ND1 and cytochrome b regions of the mitochondrial genome, encompassing >3500 bp. Eight RFLP haplotypes were identified that clustered into three distinct clans based on restriction differences and into four clans based on sequence differences. Significant differences in RFLP frequencies were found among all morph groups. The pelagic morph was highly divergent from the two benthic forms, with the benthic forms having variants from only one genetic clan while the pelagic was dominated by a single variant from another clan. The relative divergence observed among benthic and pelagic forms is ~10 fold greater when nucleotide divergence among the haplotypes, as well as haplotype frequency differences, is taken into account. Sequence divergence between haplotypes in the two main clans is of a similar order to that between haplotypes in these clans and a charr from North America. In contrast, divergence among the two benthic morphs relates entirely to differences in haplotype frequencies. The study confirms the genetic distinctiveness of the pelagic and benthic forms as well as of the two benthic forms. It strongly supports previous evidence that the genetic divergence between the pelagic and benthic populations is allopatric in origin. Additionally, the results strongly suggest that the two benthic populations have undergone peripatric divergence through the sequential colonisation of the two basins by one lineage, followed by their spatial separation and reproductive isolation. Results and experiences from a selective breeding programme aiming at improving the performance of an Arctic charr strain in aquaculture are presented. The programme, which has been running since 1985, uses traditional quantitative genetic methods based on relatedness and trait measurements. Traits considered included growth, age at sexual maturity, flesh colour, fat content and other features. Estimates in the early phase of the programme showed promising heritabilities for most traits, e.g. growth heritabilities of 0.34–0.52, and suggested that improvement by selection was feasible. Several traits such as a high rate of early maturation and poor flesh colour that were considered problematic by the Arctic charr farming industry at the programme’s start no longer hamper farming. Considerable improvement of growth by selection, estimated at 8% per generation, has contributed to shortening the production cycle in commercial farming. Results from studies of genotype–environment interactions are presented and discussed. Poor survival of fertilised eggs is a major problem in Swedish Arctic charr farming as indicated by presented survival rates. Efforts have consistently been made to avoid inbreeding in the selected strain, and at the present seventh generation the accumulated increase in inbreeding is estimated from pedigree data to be only approximately 5%. We present an overview of 27 years of experience of domestication and farming of Arctic charr ( Salvelinus alpinus) in Sweden. The domestication process included an evaluation of suitable strains for farming, a breeding programme and the study of the biological and behavioural characteristics of the species. Traits of three different Arctic charr populations differing in ecology and appearance were compared during initial 2-year trials under farming conditions. The best-performing population with respect to the growth rate and the lowest frequency of early sexual maturation was a piscivore form and this became the foundation for a breeding programme intended to select for an Arctic charr strain suitable for farming. After 23 years and 7 generations, our selective breeding has resulted in a fast-growing, late-maturing strain much appreciated by farmers. The biological and behavioural characteristics studied included annual and diel locomotor activity, feeding, social and thermal behaviour. Applying our findings in these areas has greatly improved both profits and conditions for the fish. Other investigations have focused on the application and further evaluation of the results from research in practical farming trials, such as evaluation of growth at different farms with different temperature conditions, optimal time and stocking density for start-feeding and evaluation of different feeding schedules. In Sweden, Arctic charr is mainly farmed in net pens situated in nutritionally depleted and extremely unproductive water reservoirs formed by damming rivers to create electric power. Judicious farming of Arctic charr in such reservoirs can restore their nutritional and productivity state to that which existed before regulation. Site selection criteria for Arctic charr farming in such waters have been developed. Two life-history variants of Arctic charr ( Salvelinus alpinus), anadromous and lake-resident, have been previously identified in lakes of Southern Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada. In accordance with classical life-history theory, it is hypothesised that anadromous charr will delay maturation in both size and age, and have increased fecundity (per spawning event) in comparison with lake-resident charr. Sagittal otoliths and biological data were collected for both life-history variants within the three studied lakes: Iqalugaarjuit, Qasigiat and Qinngu. Sagittal otoliths were embedded in epoxy resin, cross-sectioned for age determination, and imaged for back-calculation (size and age). Back-calculated data in each lake were fit to von Bertalanffy growth models for each life-history variant and compared via analysis of residual sums of squares. Anadromous charr had greater mean size at maturity and experienced a delay in mean age at maturity in comparison with lake-residents. The relationship between size and fecundity or egg diameter did not differ between the two life-history variants. Growth models indicate that the overall growth coefficients of lake-resident and anadromous charr were different in all three studied lakes. The Brody growth coefficient for all lake-resident charr populations was greater than anadromous individuals indicating that maximum length was reached at a rapid rate, resulting in a smaller asymptotic length. Indirect evidence suggests that anadromous and lake-resident charr belong to one reproductive population. This article reports on the work of the Irish Char Conservation Group, a voluntary Non-Government Organisation set up in 2000 to promote the conservation of Arctic char Salvelinus alpinus in Ireland. The basic terms of reference of the group, its operations and achievements are outlined. Since 2001, the Irish Char Conservation Group has surveyed 47% of known Arctic char loughs in Ireland, updating records and recording previously undiscovered populations ( n = 8). Research in partnership with other agencies is ongoing, providing information necessary for informed management decisions concerning the species. The group interfaces with the relevant statutory bodies in Ireland on a number of levels and endeavours to be as proactive as possible in facilitating research by collecting material and archiving samples for scientific research. The group interfaces with the public through a range of media in an effort to promote understanding amongst the general public of issues affecting Arctic char and its importance from biodiversity and heritage perspectives. We examined trophic positions and fatty acid concentrations of riverine, lacustrine, and aquaculture diet and fish in Austrian pre-alpine aquatic ecosystems. It was hypothesized that dietary fatty acid (FA) profiles largely influence the FA composition of the salmonids Salvelinus alpinus, Salmo trutta, and Oncorhynchus mykiss. We analyzed trophic positions using stable isotopes (δ15N) and tested for correlations with polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) concentrations. Gut content analysis revealed benthos (rivers), pellets (aquaculture), and zooplankton (lakes) as the predominant diet source. Results of dorsal muscle tissues analysis showed that the omega-3 PUFA, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6 n − 3), was the mostly retained PUFA in all fish of all ecosystems, yet with the highest concentrations in S. alpinus from aquaculture (mean: 20 mg DHA/g dry weight). Moreover, we found that eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5 n − 3) in fish of natural habitats (rivers, lakes) was the second most abundant PUFA (3–5 mg/g DW), whereas aquaculture-raised fish had higher concentrations of the omega-6 linoleic acid (18:2 n – 6; 9–11 mg/g DW) than EPA. In addition, PUFA patterns showed that higher omega-3/-6 ratios in aquacultures than in both riverine and lacustrine fish. Data of this pilot field study suggest that salmonids did not seem to directly adjust their PUFA to dietary PUFA profiles in either natural habitats or aquaculture and that some alterations of PUFA are plausible. Finally, we suggest that trophic positions of these freshwater salmonids do not predict PUFA concentrations in their dorsal muscle tissues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Climate change is anticipated to have differential effects on the salmonid and percid-cyprinid components of lake fish communities, which may in turn impact the foraging conditions and so population biology of top aquatic predators including northern pike ( Esox lucius Linnaeus). Since the 1940s, extensive monitoring has been undertaken on the northern pike, the salmonid Arctic charr ( Salvelinus alpinus) and the percid Eurasian perch ( Perca fluviatilis) populations and environmental features of the mesotrophic north and eutrophic south basins of Windermere in the English Lake District, UK Analysis of data from 1982 to 2006 revealed basin-specific changes in the degree of eutrophication, but a common warming of the lake in the 1990s was accompanied by contrasting trends in the two basins’ northern pike populations. Following a common temporary increase in catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) during the 1980s in response to a lake-wide decrease in fishing pressure, CPUE of the south basin subsequently decreased while that of the north basin showed a second increase in the late 1990s to reach a peak in 2000. In addition, the mean weight at length of female northern pike was initially similar between the two basins but then increased in the north basin from the early 1990s to the early 2000s before decreasing, while in the south basin it has shown a decrease since 2000. These changes are interpreted with respect to contrasting trends in potential prey populations, including an overall decrease in the abundance of the coldwater Arctic charr, particularly in the more eutrophic south basin where hypolimnetic oxygen levels have fallen to very low levels, and a recent marked increase in the abundance of the warmwater roach ( Rutilus rutilus) in both basins.
