Dormant aquatic invertebrates can remain viable in riverbed sediment during dry phases, forming a source for recolonisation during wet periods. Regional differences in capacity for invertebrates to survive drying in this way are poorly understood, but may indicate regional differences in vulnerability to altered flow regimes. We compared diversity of invertebrates in dry sediment from intermittent rivers in temperate and semi-arid Australia after 4-8 weeks of drying. We predicted adaptations of semi-arid biota to severe and unpredictable drying would make dry sediment a more significant recolonisation source, with higher relative diversity when compared with temperate rivers. Emerging aquatic invertebrate assemblages were compared to those sampled in nearby pools, as a common drying refuge. Relative taxa richness in rehydrated sediments was higher in the semi-arid region (83 ± 16% of pool taxa) than the temperate (47 ± 6% of pool taxa), despite lower overall richness (24 taxa in semi-arid, 32 taxa in temperate). Semi-arid rivers had greater potential for dry riverbeds to act as a source for recolonisation, given high relative diversity and abundance in dry sediment, combined with the frequent absence of alternative refuges. Dams constitute a major threat to aquatic ecosystems world-wide by modifying habitat and impairing opportunities for many freshwater fish. Subsequently, there can be a loss in fish diversity and change in the species distributions and population structure that ultimately contribute to changes in trophic structure and ecosystem function. In this study, stable isotope analysis (SIA) was used to compare trophic interaction and niche space of five fish species residing upstream and downstream of a significant barrier (Tallowa Dam) on the Shoalhaven River in south-eastern Australia. Significant reduction in niche space was found among predator/prey species residing in upstream habitat, implying limited dietary opportunity. Mixing calculations for Macquaria novemaculeata confirmed ontogenetic differences upstream and downstream of the dam. Causal mechanisms for this variability in trophic structure include habitat modification and/or discontinuity in river connectivity. SIA provides a useful tool for demonstrating the effect of barriers and/or impoundments on aquatic ecosystems, and for developing future monitoring programmes to evaluate restoration strategies. Willows ( Salix spp.) are listed as a weed of national significance in Australia. Despite this recognition, functional effects of willows on streams compared to native species are largely unknown. Leaves supply carbon to instream food webs, but may also act as surfaces for biofilm, and thus can contribute in different ways to stream metabolism. Salix fragilis L. and Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. leaves that had been colonised by biofilms were placed into chambers in laboratory conditions, and metabolic rates were measured. Gross Primary Production (GPP) of biofilms on E. camaldulensis leaves after 10 days of incubation were significantly greater than biofilms on S. fragilis leaves. S. fragilis leaves displayed greater rates of microbial decomposition per leaf mass. Autotrophic biomass was one hundred fold greater on E. camaldulensis leaves. The biofilm on E. camaldulensis leaves is likely to support a greater population of grazers, compared to S. fragilis. The alien S. fragilis leaves, therefore, are fuelling a different component of the food web to endemic E. camaldulensis leaves. Endemic Eucalyptus spp. leaves play an important role in temperate Australian streams as a substrate for autotrophic growth and provide a year round pathway for carbon to reach secondary invertebrate consumers. Highly seasonal rivers can experience extended low flow, and often dry, periods. Macroinvertebrate and flow data were used to explore hypotheses on the effects of antecedent hydrology and the low-flow, dry-season period on macroinvertebrate assemblages in northern Australia. Composition differed between early and late dry seasons. Taxa were more sensitive to water quality and more rheophilous in the early dry season when their habitats were lotic than when habitats later became lentic. As flow magnitudes in the antecedent dry season and on the sampling day increased, the habitats became more oxygenated and, in turn, macroinvertebrate richness increased. Higher wet-season flow magnitudes, flow variability and rates of fall were correlated with lower richness in the following dry season. Alteration of the flow-disturbance regime that increases the likelihood of flow cessation in macroinvertebrate habitats, or extends the duration of the dry season beyond that previously experienced in these highly seasonal systems, may alter the resistance and resilience of assemblages such that the seasonal decline and recovery of biodiversity may no longer be so reliable. Given the projected increase in low-flow incidence in many regions of the world, future research needs to examine the effects of reduced flow, flow cessation and stream drying as multiple, interacting stressors on stream biota. Riparian vegetation typically provides substantial allochthonous material to aquatic ecosystems where micro-organisms can play an important role in organic matter degradation which can support consumer biomass. We examined the effects of leaf litter quality (e.g., leaf nutrients, lignin and cellulose content), leaf species mixing, and microbial community diversity on in-stream breakdown rates of litter from dominant riparian trees ( Melaleuca argentea, M. leucadendra, and Nauclea orientalis) in both a perennial and intermittent river in Australia's wet-dry tropics. Leaf mass remaining after 82 days of in-stream incubation was negatively correlated ( P < 0.05) with initial leaf N and P content while initial lignin and cellulose content had no statistically significant effect. Breakdown rates of incubated leaves of both Melaleuca and Nauclea were significantly higher in mixed litter bags compared with single species litter bags. Although it was expected that leaf N content would decrease from initial levels during decomposition, we found either similar or slightly higher N content following in-stream incubation suggesting microbial colonisation increased overall N content. Stable isotopes of δC and δN for the major sources and consumers in both rivers provide evidence that leaf litter was an important macroinvertebrate food source in the perennial river where heavy shading may limit algal production. However, in the intermittent river where riparian cover was low, benthic algae were the major organic carbon source for consumers. Our findings suggest that riparian tree species influence rates of in-stream organic matter processing, microbial community composition, and aquatic food web dynamics in tropical wet-dry streams. Stream food web function is often assessed using carbon stable isotope assessments of the relative contribution of autochthonous and allochthonous sources of organic matter to consumer diets. As a result, variability in source signatures can strongly influence the assessment of carbon flows. To examine the implications of temporal source variability on food web interpretations, benthic algal δ13C signatures were measured over 8 weeks in five streams in subtropical Queensland, Australia. All food webs were largely driven by benthic algal carbon; however, substantial week-to-week variation in benthic algal δ13C signatures modified the calculated contributions of algae to consumer diets, with differences in autochthonous contributions of up to 11% between weeks. In addition, variable algal signatures led to many occasions in which the δ13C signatures of some consumers was beyond the range of available sources, meaning the mixing model analyses did not have a valid solution. Together, these findings suggest that temporal variability in algal δ13C signatures can strongly influence the interpretation of carbon flows in stream food webs. Future food web studies should assess the temporal variability of sources prior to sampling consumers, in order to characterise end member signatures and their relevance to consumers at the time of collection. The prevalence of catch-and-release factors known to adversely affect the mortality or physical condition of Australian bass Macquaria novemaculeata were surveyed across a range of anglers throughout impoundments and rivers in New South Wales. Subsamples of tournament-caught fish were also monitored in tanks for 1 h after being weighed to quantify immediate mortalities and sublethal physical damage. Most fish were caught on actively fished artificial baits, and were mouth hooked (96%), which resulted in no immediate mortality amongst monitored fish and a low frequency of mortality-causing factors in surveys. However, fish that were weighed-in during tournaments often had fin damage (52% of fish) and/or barotrauma (25% of fish, in impoundments only), and were held in live wells with poor water-quality. The prevalence of these sublethal effects varied considerably according to the specific seasons, locations, rules and procedures of each tournament; but could not be reliably attributed to any of the recorded catch-and-release variables (except for dissolved oxygen, which was significantly influenced by live-well volume). While these results validate the current release of angled Australian bass as a means of conserving their stocks, the potential for adverse effects could nevertheless be minimised via simple changes to conventional handling. The association of diatom assemblages to salinity was studied in 95 lakes and streams ranging from freshwater to hypersaline in the south-west of Western Australia. The relationship between environmental variables and species composition was explored using canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and partial CCA. Salinity was shown to account for a significant and independent amount of variation in the diatom data, enabling a transfer function to be developed based on the final dataset, which consisted of 89 sites and 150 diatom taxa. The most successful model was derived using tolerance-downweighted weighted averaging. Summary statistics showed that the transfer function performed very well with a high coefficient of determination and low prediction errors that remained high after the cross-validation method of jackknifing ( r = 0.97 and r = 0.89). This suggests that salinity can be accurately predicted using relative abundances of diatoms, and the model can now be applied to paleolimnological reconstructions. However, the transfer function also provides the basis for use in future biomonitoring studies to detect increases in salinity for lakes and streams most at risk, as well as to evaluate the success of remediation measures implemented to secondary salinised systems. Stable isotope signatures (δ13C and δ15N) were used to compare trophic linkages between epilithic periphyton and three families of macroinvertebrates (Baetidae, Leptophlebiidae and Gripopterygidae) in riffles of two rivers with developed catchments (including agriculture, urbanization, impoundment and flow regulation) and two with undeveloped catchments (native forest with no major impoundments) in the Murrumbidgee River system, New South Wales, Australia. Periphyton had much higher average δ15N values and lower average C:N ratios in the developed rivers than in the undeveloped rivers, probably because of the combined effects of nutrient enrichment, upstream impoundment and alteration of riparian vegetation. The invertebrates were generally slightly depleted in 13C and 15N relative to expected values if they were assimilating whole periphyton alone, which suggests that they were assimilating periphyton components selectively or also consuming other foods. The match in isotope signatures between periphyton and invertebrates was only slightly weaker in the developed than in the undeveloped rivers, suggesting that development did not greatly disrupt trophic linkages between periphyton and these invertebrates. A river classification framework is needed to make good management and planning decisions about river health and biodiversity. We developed a multi-attribute ecological river typology to address this need in the Australian State of New South Wales (801,428 km2). Multivariate patterns in data collected from 322 reference sites were used to define river types for each attribute: abiotic features (10 types), fish assemblages (6 types) and macroinvertebrate assemblages from river edges (8 types) and riffle zones (5 types). We used classification tree analysis to define broad regions for each attribute and then to construct identification keys for river types within each region using slope, elevation, maximum distance from source, latitude and mean annual rainfall. These keys allow the mapping of the likely spatial extent of river types and the assignment of a multi-attribute river-type identity to a river reach anywhere in the State. We used the average dissimilarity distances among the river types and the rates of misclassification of reference sites to assess the reliability of the assignments for different attributes in different regions. This approach to river classification can be applied anywhere in the world, resulting in simple to highly complex typologies depending on data availability. In data-poor areas it may result in a single attribute typology based on remotely derived variables and a coarsely defined reference condition. Southeastern Australia is presently experiencing one of the worst droughts observed in the region in the last 200 years. The consequences of drought have been far reaching both for human consumptive uses and for aquatic ecosystems, and serve to highlight several important aspects of the nature of droughts, their ecological impacts, and how humans respond to them. Running water ecosystems are the dominant form of freshwater ecosystem in Australia, yet, despite the high frequency of drought we lack a basic understanding of the consequences of long-term droughts (as distinct from seasonal droughts) as an ecosystem disturbance, and more is known about drought effects on flowing than on standing waters. Drought is well defined and characterised meteorologically, but hydrologically its characterisation is equivocal. While drought severely impacts natural aquatic ecosystems, its effects have been and are exacerbated by direct and indirect anthropogenic modifications to streams and their catchments. In streams the major impacts are the loss of water and habitat availability, and the reduction, if not severing, of connectivity (lateral, longitudinal and vertical). Despite the relative frequency of drought in Australia we have failed to develop long-term management strategies capable of contending with droughts and their impacts, particularly in catchments where human disturbances have reduced the natural resistance and resilience of aquatic ecosystems, and where the demand for consumptive water use is high and rising. Here, we provide a commentary on drought and its implications for the management of freshwater ecosystems. We begin with a general discussion of drought and its impacts on streams and rivers before discussing some of the more specific management issues and response strategies that have arisen in response to the current drought in Australia. Throughout we consider global as well as local examples. We conclude by highlighting important knowledge gaps and by providing some general principles for better incorporating droughts and their impacts into river management strategies. Diatom blooms in the middle reaches of the shallow, freshwater, Hunter River, Australia, are a frequent nuisance to river users. During a 4-year study, blooms of Cyclotella meneghiniana and Nitzschia spp. coincided with water temperatures above 23°C and flows below 400 Ml d−1 that lasted for more than 12 days. Redundancy analysis showed that water temperature was positively related, and antecedent flow was negatively related, to the abundance of both taxa. Addition experiments indicated that nutrients are seldom limiting to growth. It is suggested that a combination of faster growth rates at higher temperatures and longer retention times at low flows allows bloom populations to develop. Simulation modelling showed that flow regulation and water extraction have decreased flows in the river during summer, and consequently have probably increased the number of diatom blooms. The estuary of the lower River Murray features a complex mosaic of lakes, coastal lagoons and interconnecting channels. The waters of these wetlands are degraded as a result of river regulation, water abstraction, salinisation, sedimentation and the recent constriction of the River mouth. Palaeolimnologial analysis of sediment cores in two wetlands reveals that salinity in the large terminal Lake Alexandrina was only moderately influenced by tidal inflow, particularly over the past ca. 2000 years. It is now largely fresh as a result of isolation by a series of barriers completed by 1940 AD. In contrast, the seaward portion of the Coorong, a back barrier coastal lagoon, was determined to be a subsaline estuary strongly influenced by marine inflows. These findings contrast somewhat with the Coorong’s current Ramsar classification as a saline lagoon. Riverine diatoms, typical of the fossil flora of Lake Alexandrina, are rare or absent in the Holocene sediments of the Coorong, other than for a short period in the late Holocene in the northernmost end of the lagoon. The palaeolimnological evidence for independent evolution of these wetlands is consistent with geomorphic evidence of a stranded, last interglacial shoreline that acted as a sill limiting the exchange of flows between Lake Alexandrina and the Coorong lagoon. Normans Lagoon and 3-Gum pond are small floodplain water bodies adjacent to the Murray River, south-eastern Australia, and often have a visible film/sheen across their surface. Since few studies have provided quantitative comparisons of the surface and subsurface layer communities of shallow freshwater lakes, we determined the contributions of the surface and subsurface populations to overall algal biomass when a surface film was visible, and when it was not visible. We examined the algae and cyanobacteria present at the air–water interface of each water body, and compared the findings with those for the water immediately below the surface, and for the overall water column. The algal groupings Trachelomonas spp., other Euglenophyceae (principally Euglena spp.), Chlorophyceae and Cyanobacteria usually comprised >95% of the measured biovolume within all samples. Samples from the air–water interface were considerably enriched (up to 200-fold) with respect to algal biovolume, whether or not a visible surface film was present, and elevated cell counts were observed within the air–water interface for motile organisms such as Trachelomonas spp. and green unicellular flagellates. The reverse was true for the cyanobacterium Planktolyngbya however, with greater concentrations occurring at depth. In terms of its contribution to the overall algal/cyanobacterial populations within each water body, the surface layer was found to be responsible for <1–20% of the biovolume over the entire water column. Multivariate statistical analysis confirmed there were significant differences between the communities of the air–water interface and those of the water below, and that these differences occurred both in the presence and absence of a visible surface film/sheen. In studies using macroinvertebrates as indicators for monitoring rivers and streams, species level identifications in comparison with lower resolution identifications can have greater information content and result in more reliable site classifications and better capacity to discriminate between sites, yet many such programmes identify specimens to the resolution of family rather than species. This is often because it is cheaper to obtain family level data than species level data. Choice of appropriate taxonomic resolution is a compromise between the cost of obtaining data at high taxonomic resolutions and the loss of information at lower resolutions. Optimum taxonomic resolution should be determined by the information required to address programme objectives. Costs saved in identifying macroinvertebrates to family level may not be justified if family level data can not give the answers required and expending the extra cost to obtain species level data may not be warranted if cheaper family level data retains sufficient information to meet objectives. We investigated the influence of taxonomic resolution and sample quantification (abundance vs. presence/absence) on the representation of aquatic macroinvertebrate species assemblage patterns and species richness estimates. The study was conducted in a physically harsh dryland river system (Condamine-Balonne River system, located in south-western Queensland, Australia), characterised by low macroinvertebrate diversity. Our 29 study sites covered a wide geographic range and a diversity of lotic conditions and this was reflected by differences between sites in macroinvertebrate assemblage composition and richness. The usefulness of expending the extra cost necessary to identify macroinvertebrates to species was quantified via the benefits this higher resolution data offered in its capacity to discriminate between sites and give accurate estimates of site species richness. We found that very little information (<6%) was lost by identifying taxa to family (or genus), as opposed to species, and that quantifying the abundance of taxa provided greater resolution for pattern interpretation than simply noting their presence/absence. Species richness was very well represented by genus, family and order richness, so that each of these could be used as surrogates of species richness if, for example, surveying to identify diversity hot-spots. It is suggested that sharing of common ecological responses among species within higher taxonomic units is the most plausible mechanism for the results. Based on a cost/benefit analysis, family level abundance data is recommended as the best resolution for resolving patterns in macroinvertebrate assemblages in this system. This study examines the ecological effects of serial impoundments (three dams) on a rocky upland stream in southeastern Australia. Physical, chemical and biological changes were quantified and interpreted within a three-level hierarchy of effects model developed previously by Petts [1984, Impounded Rivers. John Wiley and Sons, New York] and the Australian Rivers Assessment System (AUSRIVAS) to predict pre-dam biota. First-order effects were decreased median monthly discharges and floods of lesser magnitude following construction of the dams. No effect on water characteristics (pH, electrical conductivity and major ions) was evident. The second-order effect on channel morphology was a decrease in bank-full cross-sectional area by up to 75% because of reduced flows. At all sites, the predominantly cobble streambed was armoured and generally highly stable. The discharge required to initiate movement of the streambed surface sediments (38.9 m3 s−1) was 40% less frequent since construction of the dams, implying alteration to the natural disturbance regime for benthic biota. Benthic algal growth appeared more prolific at sites directly below dams. Fewer macroinvertebrate taxa than expected and modified assemblages within 1 km of all three dams were third-order effects. Compared to reference conditions, macroinvertebrate samples from the sites directly below the dams had relatively more Chironomidae larvae, Oligochaeta and Acarina, and fewer of the more sensitive taxa, Plecoptera, Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera and Coleoptera. This paper presents the approach and methods used, and the outputs generated, in the derivation of numeric biological objectives for the protection of rivers and streams across Victoria, Australia. Biological objectives have been designed for inclusion in State government legislation for the protection of the State’s waterways. The objectives were developed using data from extensive macroinvertebrate sampling of multiple reference sites across the State. Regional variations are incorporated into the objective-setting process by using an a priori, macroinvertebrate-based regionalisation of the State. The objectives consist of four separate components, including a measure of diversity, two biotic indices and a measure of community composition. The objectives are designed for use across broad regions and any attempt to extend the system to subregional levels would require a careful consideration of the influence of scale upon the grouping of reference sites. Benthic macroinvertebrates are commonly used in rapid bioassessment programs of rivers and streams with a few standard measures used to assess condition. These include AUSRIVAS predictive models, indices such as SIGNAL and EPT and a simple measure of taxa richness, number of families. Data in these programs are usually identified to family level. Until recently, there has been no assessment of the performance of these standard measures to specific environmental gradients. In addition, the level of identification remains contentious, with family level considered adequate in broadscale assessments whereas finer levels of resolution may be preferable in other situations. We tested whether finer levels of taxonomic resolution (of all taxa and just EPTs) improved detection of two environmental gradients – salinity and habitat simplification (through increased sandiness) – and also whether alternative indices enhanced detection of these gradients. Multivariate techniques demonstrated that different invertebrate communities were readily apparent for the salinity gradient (measured as electrical conductivity at the time of sampling) but less so for the habitat simplification gradient (measured as %sand in the riffle). By contrast, the standard measures (listed above) had low r 2 values with EC (<0.34) for the salinity dataset but higher r 2 values with %sand (up to 0.72) in the habitat simplification dataset. Species level data and species EPT data did not account for much more variation in the data than their family level equivalents. Reformulating the EPT data from numbers of taxa to % of the community improved these relationships in some cases. Alternative indices based on Crustacea and Mollusca showed strong relationships to the salinity gradient but not to habitat simplification. Multivariate predictive models are widely used tools for assessment of aquatic ecosystem health and models have been successfully developed for the prediction and assessment of aquatic macroinvertebrates, diatoms, local stream habitat features and fish. We evaluated the ability of a modelling method based on the River InVertebrate Prediction and Classification System (RIVPACS) to accurately predict freshwater fish assemblage composition and assess aquatic ecosystem health in rivers and streams of south-eastern Queensland, Australia. The predictive model was developed, validated and tested in a region of comparatively high environmental variability due to the unpredictable nature of rainfall and river discharge. The model was concluded to provide sufficiently accurate and precise predictions of species composition and was sensitive enough to distinguish test sites impacted by several common types of human disturbance (particularly impacts associated with catchment land use and associated local riparian, in-stream habitat and water quality degradation). The total number of fish species available for prediction was low in comparison to similar applications of multivariate predictive models based on other indicator groups, yet the accuracy and precision of our model was comparable to outcomes from such studies. In addition, our model developed for sites sampled on one occasion and in one season only (winter), was able to accurately predict fish assemblage composition at sites sampled during other seasons and years, provided that they were not subject to unusually extreme environmental conditions (e.g. extended periods of low flow that restricted fish movement or resulted in habitat desiccation and local fish extinctions). This study assessed benthic macroinvertebrates and periphyton and its responses to managed river-flows, in riffles downstream of three dams on the Cotter River, Australian Capital Territory. Benthic macroinvertebrates and periphyton were also assessed in adjacent tributaries of the river, as well as in a nearby unregulated river and its tributaries. Food sources of four macroinvertebrate taxa (Leptophlebiidae, Elmidae, Glossosomatidae and Orthocladiinae) were determined by stable isotope analysis of the invertebrates and their potential food, in conjunction with examination of the gut contents of individual invertebrates. Components of benthic periphyton were the main food source for the selected taxa. Orthocladiinae consumed primarily amorphous detritus, while Elmidae, Glossosomatidae and Leptophlebiidae consumed diatoms. Enclosed benthic chambers were used to measure the response of benthic metabolism to monthly flow spikes released from one of the dams. The balance of benthic metabolism as measured by the Production/Respiration ratio (P/R) showed a shift towards production after the release of flow spikes. At sites downstream of the dams, there was more periphyton chlorophyll-a in the form of filamentous green algae than at sites in the unregulated river and the tributaries, and macroinvertebrate taxa using periphyton as a food resource were missing or reduced in abundance relative to sites without dams. However, the site downstream of the dam with environmental flow releases had more macroinvertebrate taxa and less periphyton cholorophyll-a content than sites downstream of dams without managed environmental flows, suggesting that a more suitable food supply resulting from environmental flow releases shifted macroinvertebrate communities towards those of unregulated streams. Diatoms and macroinvertebrates are both commonly used for biological assessment of stream condition. As the use of biological assessment techniques increases, resource managers will need to make decisions on which biological tool to use for a particular study. In a study of the Kiewa River, Victoria, Australia we assessed these two components of the biota—macroinvertebrates and diatoms—using indices and pattern analysis, and comparing them with an a priori landscape classification. We also assessed the relationship exhibited between the biological results and environmental variables which are usually significant in stream ecosystems. To make the data comparable we used categorical abundances for both data sets. The pattern analyses showed complementary results, with diatoms more closely related to water quality variables, whereas macroinvertebrates were primarily related to catchment and habitat features. An analysis of a combined data set (diatoms plus macroinvertebrates) showed no extra information was gained. Using categorisation to create consistency between data sets was shown to reduce the information and affect results from the diatom analyses. The results suggested that the locally derived bioassessment models and indices provided a more accurate assessment of the sites than the overseas-derived diatom index. The outcomes are complicated by issues of data weighting, whereby a presence/absence diatom index may have performed better than abundance-weighted indices due to strong dominance of one or two species at a site. Patterns of spatial autocorrelation of biota may reveal much about underlying ecological and biological forces responsible for generating the patterns. Operationally, ecological work and many applied problems (e.g., impact detection, ecosystem health assessment using reference sites) require statistical knowledge of autocorrelation patterns. Here, we report on assemblage-level autocorrelation in the benthic-invertebrate assemblages of riffles in two adjacent, relatively pristine rivers in south-eastern Victoria, Australia (40 km reaches of the Wellington and Wonnangatta rivers). The assemblages of the Wellington River were strongly autocorrelated, but those of the Wonnangatta River showed a distance-independent pattern. There was no effect of taxonomic resolution, rarity protocols or whole-assemblage surrogates on the inferred levels of autocorrelation. We conclude that there is little evidence that one can assume the pattern of spatial relationships among invertebrate faunas within a river, and this probably holds true for the usual set of taxonomic resolutions and subsets used to discern changes wrought by human impacts. Australian science has made rapid advances in the last decade in understanding eutrophication processes in inland waters and estuaries. The freshwater research on which these advances are based was triggered by well-publicised blooms of cyanobacteria during the 1980s and early 1990s, particularly a 1000 km long bloom on the Darling River. In estuaries the study which greatly enhanced our understanding but simultaneously served to stimulate further research into estuarine eutrophication, the Port Phillip Bay Study, was initially designed to address perceived problems of toxicants in the Bay but provided profound insights into drivers for, and ecosystem responses to, eutrophication. Subsequent estuarine research has largely been stimulated by management questions arising from Australia’s increasing coastal development for residential purposes. The research has shown that some of the beliefs extant at the time of the blooms were incorrect. For example, it is now clear that stratification and light penetration, not nutrient availability, are the triggers for blooms in the impounded rivers of southeastern Australia, although nutrient exhaustion limits the biomass of blooms. Again, nitrogen seems to play as important a role as phosphorus does in controlling the biomass of these freshwater blooms. The research has also shown that aspects of eutrophication, such as nutrient transport, are dominated by different processes in different parts of Australia. Many of the biophysical processes involved in eutrophication have now been quantified sufficiently for models to be developed of such processes as sediment-nutrient release, stratification, turbidity and algal growth in both freshwater and estuarine systems. In some cases the models are reliable enough for the knowledge gained in particular waterbodies to be applied elsewhere. Thus, there is now a firm scientific foundation for managers to rely upon when managing algal blooms. Whilst these findings have already been presented to managers and communities throughout Australia, there is still a considerable way to go before they are absorbed into their modus operandi. Dryland rivers occur over much of Australia’s inland and have some of the most variable patterns of flow in the world. Despite their dominance in terms of Australia’s river types, dryland rivers have not been the focus of the recent increase in research on indicators of river health, mostly owing to their spatial remoteness and relatively low levels of water resource development and human disturbance. Most rivers in arid and semi-arid regions are ephemeral, and only carry significant flows during the wetter months or following infrequent but intense rainfall events. It is not known which, if any, of the existing approaches to river health assessment can be used to accurately assess the health of these large ephemeral rivers. This paper considers why the standard methods for interpreting the currently-used indicators for river health may need to be adapted for variable systems and suggests the use of trends that recognise natural variation in indicator values for undertaking this. It is now accepted that most of the rivers and streams of Australia have been degraded to varying extents by European settlement. The scale and level of this degradation have been documented by State and Federal government authorities. To halt and reverse the degradation in the next two decades, it is crucial that the conservation and restoration of streams, rivers, riparian zones, and catchments become paramount in land and water management. Effective stream restoration requires a coordinated effort at the catchment level rather than at the level of many individual local sites. Monitoring, including the gathering of before-restoration data, and the setting of feasibly-attainable goals are key components of effective restoration. In planning projects and setting goals, it needs to be recognized that some goals may only be attained in the long-term. Large-scale restoration projects will require partnerships to be formed between resource managers and scientists, with other stakeholders possibly involved. Selected projects could be adaptively managed with the emphasis on gaining scientific knowledge on the effects of management interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Urbanization is acknowledged as one of the most severe threats to stream health, spawning recent research efforts into methods to ameliorate these negative impacts. Attention has focused on streams in densely-populated cities but less populous regional urban centres can be equally prone to some of the same threats yet might not meet the conventional definitions of urban. Several recent reviews have identified the changes to streams that occur during urbanization but they note that few ecological studies have explored ecosystem-level responses, typically focusing instead on state variables such as invertebrate abundance. In many regional urban streams, changes to the extent of impervious drainage have implications for their hydrology and channel morphology but the influence of these changes on fundamental ecosystem processes of leaf litter breakdown and transport compared with those in nearby rural streams are poorly known. The widespread practice of planting exotic trees along riparian zones and street margins draining into urban streams further exacerbates the disruption of natural organic matter dynamics. The combination of seasonal leaf fall by exotic species and the altered drainage patterns through urbanization in Armidale, a regional town in New South Wales, Australia, resulted in contrasting patterns of benthic organic matter storage over 18 months compared to nearby reference and rural streams. Macroinvertebrate detritivore densities were low in the urban stream, implying disruption of the usual biological pathways of leaf breakdown. Understanding the interactions of hydrology, drainage pattern, leaf input and biological attributes of a stream is crucial for managers trying to restore stream ecosystem services without incurring public concern about the appearance of regional urban streams.
