We studied downstream migration of 256 radio-tagged Atlantic salmon smolts passing a low-head power station where technical facilities have been improved to allow safe migration via several bypass routes. Extra mortality was 7 and 17% (two years) in the power station reservoir, and a minimum of 10 and 13% at the power station compared to in a control stretch. The majority of the smolts followed the main flow at the power station, towards the turbines. Sloped bar racks with 10 mm bar spacing hindered smolts from entering the turbines, hence there was no turbine mortality. Smolts used surface openings in the racks, which directed them to a bypass route outside the turbines. The extra mortality in the reservoir and at the power station was related to physical injuries in bypass routes and to predation. The mortality risk in the reservoir and at the power station decreased with increasing migration speed. Migration speeds increased with water discharge. Migration was slower when the smolts passed the power station than on other stretches. This study shows that hydropower regulation caused elevated mortality and delays for downstream migrating fish, even with improved technical facilities to reduce mortality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This resampling study in 338 semi-permanent plots analyses changes in river macrophyte diversity in 70 water courses (small streams to medium-sized rivers) from four regions of the northwest German lowlands during the last six decades. The total macrophyte species pool decreased between the 1950s and 2010/2011 by 28% (from 51 to 37 species), mean plot-level species richness by 19% (from 4.7 to 3.8 species per relevé) and the number of red-listed species by 40% (from 30 to 18 species). Species loss was associated with marked change in species traits: species with presumably higher mechanical stress tolerance (indicated by low specific leaf area and short leaf longevity) are more abundant today. Nearly, half of the species present in the 1950s had either disappeared or been replaced by other species in the recent relevés. The dramatic impoverishment is likely a consequence of continued nutrient input that drove oligo- and mesotraphent species to extinction, and of restructuring and maintenance works in the water courses that reduced stagnant and undisturbed river habitats, where stress-intolerant species can persist. Efficient measures to reduce the nutrient load and to re-naturalise stream and river beds are urgently needed to halt and reverse the loss of macrophyte diversity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We compared habitat diversity and morphodynamics of 'actively' restored reaches (including removal of bank fixation, widening and large wood placement) with 'passively' restored reaches (abandonment of channel maintenance) and adjacent non-restored control reaches in medium-sized Central European mountain rivers. Habitat diversity and river morphology were mapped in two consecutive years and changes in habitat composition (channel features, substrates) and morphological changes (active depth and width) were quantified. In both years, habitat diversity was generally higher in the restored reaches compared to their non-restored counterparts, and significantly differed between restoration approaches, with average values in actively restored reaches being about 60% larger than in passively restored reaches. Channel feature composition differed significantly, both between restored and unrestored reaches, and between restoration approaches, whereas substrate composition was similar in all investigated reaches, indicating that restoration had a higher effect on mesohabitat than on microhabitat conditions. Interannual habitat dynamics in respect to channel feature composition were larger in the actively restored compared to the passively restored reaches, while substrate composition remained fairly constant in all reaches. Regarding morphodynamics, changes in depth and width of actively restored reaches differed significantly from changes in passively restored ones in three of the four elements compared. Our findings imply increased habitat richness, diversity and habitat dynamics in the restored reaches, especially in actively restored ones. Analysis of discharge data suggests that flood events exceeding critical shear stress of the bed material, and the time span since restoration determine the potential for morphological changes. This article comprises a literature analysis of 41 river rehabilitation projects to assess the short-term (5 years) ability of indicator groups to demonstrate progress towards river rehabilitation goals. Positive indications were compared to land-use, river size, rehabilitation intervention and time. A questionnaire was developed to investigate river manager's interpretation of rehabilitation success and to assess their level of adherence to recommendations in the literature with regard to rehabilitation assessment on a conceptual level. A total of 54 responses were received from respondents based in Germany, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The results indicate that macroinvertebrate indicators, while widely used in assessing river rehabilitation efforts, exhibited a lower frequency of positive responses than most other indicator types in the short term. Conversely, terrestrial floodplain indicators exhibited the most frequent level of positive response for all ecological type indicators leading to recommendations for further investigations into their use for short-term monitoring. Assessment procedures recommended in literature are largely followed, illustrating the advances that have been made with regard to assessment planning. Indicator responses are influenced by scale factors, for example, land-use and river size, that are often not considered by rehabilitation managers. While an emphasis is placed on ecological, hydrological and morphological indicators in monitoring schemes, the socioeconomic perspective (emphasized in the literature as forming an integral part of the river system) is neglected. Different national assessment concepts impede the harmonization of river quality classifications using macrophytes in Europe. This study describes a procedure to identify similarities between the national methods for ecological quality assessment of Austria, Belgium (Flanders and Wallonia), France, Germany, Great Britain and Poland. Based on an international data set covering three European stream types we identified sites commonly assessed as high status by most methods. A mean index derived from averaging the national assessment results per stream site was then correlated with the abundance of each macrophyte taxon. We defined common macrophyte indicator scores using these correlation coefficients. This enabled the description of type-specific macrophyte communities under near-natural and degraded conditions, and the development of a common metric (mICM) that was correlated with all national methods. The weaker relations of the Flemish and German methods were improved by adjusting national indicator scores of selected macrophyte taxa that deviated from the common indicator scores. The analysis of common high status sites provided mICM reference values. A novel aquatic bioassay with Lemna minor (duckweed), a representative of higher plants, was applied to pore waters (interstitial waters) from river sediments. The results have been used for the ecotoxicological assessment of sediments in several German rivers. The aim of the present study is to demonstrate the usefulness of a macrophyte bioassay, as a supplement to the standardised algae bioassays, with regard to the ecotoxicological assessment of aquatic systems. The objective of the current study was to identify hydromorphological variables that are suitable to define and describe hydromorphological degradation. Stream type-specific and spatial scale-dependent multivariate analysis (Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling, NMS) of 106 hydromorphological variables derived from 275 samples at 147 sites and indicator value analysis (IndVal) resulted in the identification of key factors describing hydromorphological differences in Central European lowland streams. Sample sites represented six European stream types from Sweden (1 stream type), The Netherlands (2 stream types), and Germany (3 stream types). The four large-scale hydro(geo)morphological variables: catchment size, geology (`% moraines', `% alluvial deposits'), and natural land use (`% natural forest') explained inter-stream type differences best. On the smaller site scale, riparian vegetation described inter-stream type differences best. On catchment scale, `% natural forest', and `agricultural land use' illustrated inter-stream type hydromorphological degradation of all six stream types very well. Four site related variables (`% wooded riparian vegetation', `% shading', `average stream width', and `% macrolithal (cobbles, 20 to 40 cm long) account for hydromorphological degradation on the smaller reach-scale. An analysis of indicator variables restricted to German stream types only resulted in four factors, namely `% xylal' (tree trunks, branches, roots, etc.), `no of debris dams >0.3 m3', `no of logs >10 cm ∅', and `% fixed banks' as important descriptors of hydromorphological degradation. Intra-stream type hydromorphological degradation is illustrated for `mid-sized sand bottom streams in the German lowlands'. For this stream type, a clear gradient of degradation was revealed, and 25 variables were identified to entirely characterize reference conditions and degradation. The variables that described the degradation gradient best were combined to the new German Structure Index (GSI), which can be implemented to continuously measure hydromorphological degradation. We developed a new Multimetric Index for stream assessment, which is mainly focussed on the impact of hydromorphological degradation on the macroinvertebrate fauna. The index was developed for five German stream types, three of which are located in the lowlands of Northern Germany and two in the lower mountainous areas. For each stream type sites representing different stages of hydromorphological degradation were investigated; the macroinvertebrate fauna of each site was sampled two or three times in 2000 (83 sites and 174 samples altogether). In addition, more than 200 parameters describing the hydromorphology of the sites have been recorded. The assessment system was developed separately for each of the stream types. The development process included (1) the generation of a new index (`German Fauna Index'), (2) the selection of faunal metrics, which correlate to hydromorphological degradation and (3) the combination of the selected metrics into a Multimetric Index. To correlate faunal metrics and hydromorphological degradation, a `Structure Index' describing the alteration of stream morphology was generated. A correlation matrix of the selected metrics and the structure index is presented. The `German Fauna Index' is based on taxa, which predominantly occur at sites of a certain morphological degradation class. The selection process of taxa included in the new index was in a first step based on data sampled in this study and supplemented by literature data. For one stream type (mid-sized mountain streams) the process of metric selection and validation is described in detail, including a correlation matrix of the metrics and a validation of the metrics with data on additional sampling sites. Our study attempted a new approach to biological assessment in Germany that would comply with the requirements of the European Union Water Framework Directive. We developed a multimetric index for use throughout Germany, based on the macrozoobenthos and devised along the guidelines formulated by Karr & Chu (1999). The index contains twelve measures, chosen for their discriminatory power in assessing general impairment as well as specific stressors (e.g., impoundments, acidification, organic or chemical pollution), the inclusion of all meaningful ecological metric categories, interrelationship as low as possible and the feasibility of using them in all geographic stream classes of Germany. Due to the availability of data over time the method was developed in three steps. In step 1 we studied the stressor specific response of biological attributes to additional stress by comparing each of 162 sites impaired by a known factor with a nearby site, which was morphologically comparable, but impaired to a lesser extent. The resulting list of 17 candidate metrics for a multimetric index was validated in step 2 using a set of model data from our own investigations. This step included data from not or minimally disturbed reference sites and the design of a five-class-scale of human impact to permit the use of dose-response curves, but no differentiation of stream types. The multimetric index IBI 12 was developed using dose-response curves, correlation coefficients and graphical analysis. The index was improved in the third step, calculations for this based on a dataset containing about 4000 macrozoobentos samples from over 900 streams and rivers in Germany, collected by water management authorities and researchers. The final version of the method uses type specific reference conditions, but the same set of 12 metrics for all stream types. This new IBI 12 is suitable to fulfil the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive. It correlates with a Spearman's R of 0.76 with the general state of impairment for every stream type, and a Spearman's R between 0.6 and 0.87 with the most important specific stressors like sewage or morphological degradation. It proved to correlate higher with those stressors than any single index as yet used in Germany. The stressor specific analysis also substantiated that no single metric was really stressor specific with the exception of an acidity index. Even the well established Saprobic indices responded quite well to other stressors besides organic pollution. The results suggest that a separate assessment of specific stressors might be only possible by analysing the reaction pattern of an array of metrics. Further improvement of the index could be achieved by advances in stream typology and the reference conditions, as well as by a higher degree of standardisation to decrease the scatter caused by variations in sampling season, methodology and determination level.
