Diatoms have been widely used in stream health assessments as they are highly sensitive to water quality. There is no standardised method for diatom-based stream health assessments causing many substrates, both natural and artificial, to be used. Few studies have investigated the impact of substrate type on diatom assemblages in streams with highly variable water levels. To determine if the substrate type affects these assessments, diatoms were analysed from an artificial substrate (rope), rock and mud, from 17 sites in the Mount Lofty Ranges, South Australia. Rope has been advocated as a substrate as it mimics aquatic plants, while having advantages of artificial substrates (e.g. standardised habitat). We found that substrate type did not affect the stream health assessment based on the Diatom Species Index for Australian Rivers and hence the additional cost of deploying ropes in such studies is unlikely to be warranted. However, substrate type influenced diatom–nutrient relationships, with no relationship between nutrients in the stream water and diatoms in the mud substrate—possibly due to the nutrient subsidy provided by mud. Therefore, by contrast, the absence of nutrients provided by the rope substrate indicates it is suited to studies of nutrient status and sensitivity in streams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Temporary streams are submitted to high seasonal hydrological variations which induce habitat fragmentation. Global change promotes longer non-flow periods, affecting hydrological continuity and the distribution of biological assemblages in river networks. We aimed to investigate the effects of hydrological discontinuity on phototrophic biofilm assemblages in a Mediterranean stream, at both network and habitat scales. At the network scale during basal flow conditions, mostly nitrate and DOC concentrations were associated to the taxonomical and trait distribution of algae and cyanobacterial assemblages. Cyanobacteria dominated at the upstream and downstream sites of the network, while green algae and diatoms were abundant in its middle part. At the habitat scale, hydrological discontinuity promoted large changes in biofilm composition between riffles and pools, where pools were inhabited preferentially by green algae and riffle habitats by cyanobacteria. Our findings emphasize the myriad of factors affecting the spatial distribution of phototrophic biofilms, which become more heterogeneous according to water flow interruption. Under the predicted climate change scenarios, spatial heterogeneity in temporary streams may increase, which will lead to change phototrophic biofilm assemblages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Epilithic algal community structure and function are important indicators of stream ecosystem health and are sensitive to ambient environmental changes. In this study, we examined the impact of light and nutrients on epilithic algal community structure and function by an in situ nutrient addition and shaded canopy experiment in subtropical streams in China. Epilithic algae structure, dominated by diatoms, was significantly different with nutrient addition and light reduction. Nutrient addition increased the epilithic algae and diatom density, colonial life-forms, planktonic diatoms, and high-profile diatoms but decreased the low-profile diatoms. The shaded canopy increased the low-profile diatoms but decreased the adnate life-forms, planktonic diatoms, and high-profile diatoms. Epilithic metabolism, including gross primary production (GPP), net daily metabolism (NDM), and production/respiration (P/R) increased with nutrient addition, while respiration (R) only increased when the canopy was open with nutrient addition. Epilithic GPP had a significant positive correlation with diatom density (P < 0.01, R2 = 0.9425). Our results indicated that changes in epilithic algae structure due to changes in riparian canopy coverage and nutrients could affect epilithic algal community function. Forestry-related land use can cause increasing instream sedimentation, burying and eradicating stream bryophytes, with severe ecological consequences. However, there is limited understanding of the relative roles and overall importance of the two frequently co-occurring stressors, increased fine sediments and loss of bryophytes, to stream biodiversity and ecosystem functions. By using random forest modeling and partial dependence functions, we studied the relative importance of stream bryophytes and fine sediments to multiple biological endpoints (leaf-decaying fungi, diatom, bryophyte, and benthic macroinvertebrate communities; leaf decomposition) using field survey data from headwater streams. Stream bryophyte abundance and richness were negatively related to fine sediment cover, highlighting the detrimental effect of sedimentation on bryophytes. However, bryophyte abundance was consistently more important a determinant of variation in community composition than was fine sediment cover. Leaf decomposition was influenced by shredder abundance, water temperature and, to a lesser degree, stream size. Our results suggest that the loss of stream bryophytes due to increasing sedimentation, rather than fine sediments per se, seems to be the key factor affecting multiple biological responses. Enhancing the re-establishment of bryophyte stands could partly compensate for the negative impacts of sedimentation on bryophytes and, consequently, on several other components of boreal stream ecosystems. Estuarine Pettaquamscutt River is a unique habitat 10 km in length with physical and biogeochemical characteristics analogous to a miniature fjord. Its meromictic upper basins are characterized by a permanent oxic–anoxic vertical gradient in which a well-oxygenated upper layer overlies a deeper, anoxic reservoir, with persistent blooms of phototrophic anoxygenic bacteria (Chromatium, Chlorobium) at the oxic–anoxic transition layer. A diverse assemblage of nanoplanktonic, centric diatoms (Cyclotella caspia, Thalassiosira pseudonana, cf. Cyclotella cryptica) dominated the seasonal phytoplankton cycle in the aerobic layer, similar to comparable meromictic habitats elsewhere. This assemblage of nano-centric diatoms appears to be trait-separated from other species clusters and is potentially useful as a functional group flora with ecophysiology diagnostic of marine estuarine rivers and meromictic habitat niche structure. The most conspicuous phytoplankton feature, however, was the year-round occurrence of the photoautotrophic euglenid Euglenaformis (Euglena) proxima, restricted in its upper water column distribution to the O2–H2S boundary layer where it formed a consortium with the photosynthetic green and purple sulfur bacteria community. The association of E. proxima with meromixis, H2S, and phototrophic anoxygenic bacteria is similar to that reported previously in a brackish Norwegian oyster poll and a brackish loch in Scotland. Bioassessment to evaluate stream integrity and determine changes related to point-source discharges is typically focused in wadeable streams, with limited understanding of seasonal and annual variation. We used a multi-year (n = 13), multi-site (n = 5–7), seasonally (spring and fall) sampled dataset to evaluate spatial and temporal patterns in diatom assemblages relative to measured environmental variables, land use, and pulp and paper mill discharges in a wadeable stream (Codorus Creek, PA) and three non-wadeable rivers (Leaf River, MS; McKenzie and Willamette rivers, OR). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and permutational ANOVA (PERMANOVA) showed that significant spatial differences in commonly used diatom biotic integrity/diagnostic metrics and assemblage structure were common in the wadeable stream, but rare in the non-wadeable rivers. Season-specific diatom patterns were observed in all streams regardless of size, but annual variation was more prevalent in the non-wadeable rivers. Environmental variables explained 35–58% of the variability in diatoms in the spring and 33–50% in the fall, with physical habitat characteristics associated with stream morphology and seasonality more important than those associated with anthropogenic inputs such as land use and point sources. Some local communities contribute more to beta diversity than others, which has been known as compositional uniqueness or local contribution to beta diversity. Compositional uniqueness should correlate positively with environmental uniqueness and site isolation. We evaluated compositional uniqueness (total and in terms of species replacement and nestedness) of periphytic diatoms and insects in subtropical streams and tested for correlates of these metrics. We sampled 90 riffles in a near-pristine catchment in the southeast Atlantic Forest of Brazil. The total compositional uniqueness for diatoms and insects were not associated to riffle position. However, the total compositional uniqueness of diatoms (presence–absence data), was correlated with the uniqueness of streambed substrate composition, while the total compositional uniqueness of insects did not correlate with any explanatory variable. The compositional uniqueness in terms of nestedness (presence–absence data) for diatoms and for insects (abundance data) was correlated positively with the uniqueness of substrate composition. Compositional uniqueness in terms of species replacement (abundance data) for insects was correlated negatively with the uniqueness of substrate composition. Our results indicate that subtle differences in environmental uniqueness, play a role in determining beta diversity in near-pristine streams. Establishing ecological assessment schemes is challenging when gradients are short and there are no sites with minimal anthropogenic alteration against which metrics can be calibrated. This is the situation for large rivers in Romania and this paper describes efforts to establish meaningful ecological status concepts. The intercalibration exercise, conducted as part of Water Framework Directive (WFD) implementation, has provided a metric ("phytobenthos Intercalibration Common Metric", pICM) which allows ecological status in different countries to be expressed on a common scale. The average boundary positions of countries who participated in this exercise provided a "common view" of status and, together with pICM, offer an "off-the-shelf" solution for countries unable to develop independent methods. However, even when expressed as pICM, Romanian phytobenthos data have a weak relationship with nutrients. Analysis of chemical data and comparison with similar data from elsewhere in Europe confirm that there are few sites with significantly elevated nutrient concentrations. Incorporation of the Romanian data into the larger dataset produced a stronger relationship from which the status of phytobenthos in very large rivers in Romania could be confirmed. We review the literature on species flocks in diatoms. Past descriptions of species flocks in diatoms are of few species and do not demonstrate monophyly of the taxa explicitly. The genus Tetralunata, with 19 taxa described from Lake Toba, Indonesia, may be the best example to date of species flocks in freshwater diatoms. Other examples for this group are evaluated, from ancient lakes, river drainages and islands, to more geologically short-lived areas and habitats. Other examples may reside in the Rift Valley lakes of East Africa, Amazonia, lakes Baikal, and Ohrid, and some islands such as New Caledonia, Sulawesi, and Madagascar. It would appear that the phenomenon is not expressed in Hawaii, which has endemic, but very few, species. It is interesting to note that nearly all of the examples of species flocks of extant diatoms are of those groups that possess a raphe system. The role of molecular studies to study species flocks is discussed. Other features not traditionally examined to recognize species-level distinctions (physiology, ecology) which may be useful in the future to help identify species flocks in freshwater diatoms. The objective of this study was to evaluate the response of stream diatom assemblages to changes in water quality in different land-use settings. Water quality sampling and benthic diatom community data were collected in April and September 2013 at 95 sampling stations in the Manyame Catchment, Zimbabwe. The data collected were subjected to multivariate statistical techniques; CCA and cluster analysis to determine environmental gradients along which the diatom species were distributed as well as to elucidate hypothesized differences in community structure per land-use type. Three land-use categories were identified in this study: commercial agricultural, communal agricultural and urban-mining areas in order of increasing human disturbance. No significant differences in physical and chemical variables were recorded between the two sampling periods. Study sites were grouped into roughly three broad categories based on CCA and cluster analysis. As pollution increased, low to moderate pollution tolerant species such as Cocconeis placentula, Surirella linearis and Surirella robusta were replaced by high pollution tolerant species such as Pinnularia braunii, Tryblionella coarcata, Luticola goeppertiana and Stauroneis smithii. Fatty acids are integral components of periphyton and differ among algal taxa. We examined seasonal patterns in periphyton fatty acids in six minimally disturbed headwater streams in Pennsylvania's Appalachian Mountains, USA. Environmental data and periphyton were collected across four seasons for fatty acid and algal taxa content. Non-metric multidimensional scaling ordination suggested significant seasonal differences in fatty acids; an ordination on algal composition revealed similar seasonal patterns, but with slightly weaker separation of summer and fall. Summer and fall fatty acid profiles were driven by temperature, overstory cover, and conductivity and winter profiles by measures of stream size. Ordination on algal composition suggested that summer and fall communities were driven by overstory and temperature, whereas winter communities were driven by velocity. The physiologically important fatty acid 18:3ω6 was highest in summer and fall. Winter samples had the highest 20:3ω3. Six saturated fatty acids differed among the seasons. Periphyton fatty acids profiles appeared to reflect benthic algal species composition. This suggests that periphyton fatty acid composition can be useful in characterizing basal food resources and stream water quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The sampling skills of three common European fish species ( Barbus barbus, Chondrostoma nasus and Squalius cephalus) were tested to assess their potential as biomonitors of past changes in river water quality through the analysis of diatoms in fish guts. The study was performed on three rivers with different chemical and physical conditions. Comparison of similarity indices revealed low diatom assemblage resemblance between epilithic samples and samples collected from fish guts at the same locality. In contrast, a mixed-effect linear model identified significant differences between locations through comparison of diatom-based water quality indices. Among fish species, diatom indices calculated from gut samples of B. barbus and C. nasus were in most cases not significantly different from those from epilithic samples while those from S. cephalus were often significantly different. The results of the study demonstrate that diatom analysis of fish guts provides a clear distinction between eutrophic and hypereutrophic rivers. Finer nutrient variations within hypereutrophic conditions were also found to be significant for some diatom indices. We studied the effects of flow reduction on epibenthic algal assemblages by comparing up- and down-stream reaches of ten Hong Kong streams subject to different degrees of water abstraction during 2007-2008. Downstream discharge declined by 71 and 54% during the wet and dry seasons, respectively. Algal responses varied seasonally and according to morphological guild and reflecting reductions in discharge and current velocity, or changes in total nitrogen and phosphate, or their combined effects. Significant inter-reach assemblage differences were observed during the both seasons, but wet-season assemblage structure was not directly influenced by any flow-related variable. During the dry season, scouring-tolerant prostrate/adnate diatoms (especially Achnanthes, Cocconeis) were relatively abundant upstream, whereas intolerant stalked ( Eunotia, Gomphonema) and mobile diatoms were more numerous downstream. Both low- and high-profile (erect diatoms, Chamaesiphon, Calothrix) guilds were sensitive to changes in nutrients. Low-flow conditions downstream, surprisingly, enhanced algal diversity, and richness. Based on the linear response of Cocconeis (mainly C. placentula) to discharge reduction, we recommend that >65% of dry-season discharge should be maintained in downstream reaches in order to sustain near-natural algal assemblages; 32% of discharge is required to avoid substantial alterations in assemblage structure. One of the most striking features of the diatom Didymosphenia geminata, which has increased markedly in abundance in a number of countries in recent years, is the very large branched stalks. In order to help understanding their role, an ultrastructural study was carried out on two populations, one from a stream in northern England and the other from a river on Vancouver Island, Canada. In both cases, the main part of the stalk had a central reticulate core surrounded by an outer region with dense fibres. A longitudinal structure in the uppermost part of the stalk just under the collar surrounding the base of the cell may perhaps correspond to a tube. The structure of the septa formed where branches divide is also described. Phosphomonoesterase activity known to be present in the stalks was shown to occur in the inner peripheral layers of the stalks and especially in the collar area. The results show that stalks have a complex structure suggesting their importance for their phosphatase activity to overcome low inorganic phosphate concentrations. Their large surface may function in herbivory avoidance, a better exposure of cells to turbulent conditions to increase nutrient uptake, adsorption of limiting elements and gas exchange. Intercalibration of ecological status class boundaries between member states is a requirement of the European Union's Water Framework Directive. Although a preliminary intercalibration of boundaries established for phytobenthos has been performed, a number of questions remain, including the extent to which variations in taxonomic concepts used in different member states influences the position of these boundaries. In this paper, the robustness of the diatom-based metrics used for intercalibration is assessed. Whilst use of genus-level identification led to a loss of ecological information, merging representatives of closely-related taxa has little effect on these metrics. Similarly, taxa that occur only rarely or never have high relative abundances in a dataset can also be ignored without the loss of ecological information. Similar results were obtained when modern taxonomic concepts were compared with concepts in use 80 years ago. Fine scale taxonomy may play a valuable role within member states; however, our results suggest that, at a continental scale, a simplified approach to diatom taxonomy should not affect intercalibration results. The literature on monitoring rivers using benthic algal communities is reviewed, especially that for Europe during the past 20 years. In particular, papers in a series of symposia at approximately 3-year intervals are considered to assess the extent to which aims and methods have shifted. A variety of methods were being tested in the early 1990s, and some put to practical use. However, the requirements of the EU Urban Waste Water Directive in 1991 have gradually narrowed procedures in most countries outside Scandinavia to the use of indices based on benthic diatoms to monitoring nutrients, especially phosphate. Most countries in Europe now adopt one of a few indices. The same indices are being used to deal with the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive introduced in 2000 to achieve good ecological status by 2015. It is argued, however, that features of upland river sites require the development of revised indices for this purpose. Features of many sites include highly variable nutrient concentrations and ratios, and the greater importance of organic phosphate. Two possible approaches are suggested to developing a revised index. One is a diatom index which incorporates information about the environmental features important here. In 2009, seventeen analysts participated in a pan-European diatom ring-test (intercalibration), analyzing nine samples from seven countries following the European standard EN 14407. The objective of this exercise was to agree on practical conventions on diatom identification to facilitate future intercalibration work and to assess the extent to which national differences in sample analysis (counting protocol and identification conventions) contribute to variability in EU-level comparisons of diatom-based methods. Differences in the reported taxa lists were large, but not a major source of variation in values of a common metric (the phytobenthos Intercalibration Common Metric, ICM). Therefore, every country can apply its own identification conventions for national assessments, and still be fairly confident that the ICM reflects the national classification of its streams. Part of the index variation was due to differences in counting protocols and care should be taken when handling broken valves, girdle views and small taxa. Diatoms are major contributors to global carbon fixation and constitute a significant portion of biofilms found in lotic ecosystems. Despite their widespread abundance and the fact that extensive studies have been performed on morphological features of frustules, molecular tools for the identification of diatoms are not commonly available. This study focuses on the development of oligonucleotide probes for the detection of diatom species relevant to water quality assessment. The selected panel of diatoms covers all the species found in water of varying quality from the rivers of central-East Apennine (Italy). Small subunit rRNA-targeted probes were applied to a microarray platform as well as to a new technique termed Primer-Probe, with the aim of obtaining a molecular tool suitable for accurate identification of both single and mixed species diatom populations. The Primer-Probe technique together with dot-blot assays proved to be ideal for the preliminary screening of a large set of DNA oligonucleotides designed by ARB software. It was shown that microarrays, as a promising technology for rapid and simultaneous detection of a wide range of species-specific genetic markers, can be adapted to monitor changes within a diatom community. It is suggested that microarrays will provide a molecular basis for microbial identification to support standard microscopy techniques used by ecologists and environmental scientists for monitoring water quality. Current bioassessment efforts are focused on small wadeable streams, at least partly because assessing ecological conditions in non-wadeable large rivers poses many additional challenges. In this study, we sampled 20 sites in each of seven large rivers in the Pacific Northwest, USA, to characterize variation of benthic diatom assemblages among and within rivers relative to environmental conditions. Analysis of similarity (ANOSIM) indicated that diatom assemblages were significantly different among all the seven rivers draining different ecoregions. Longitudinal patterns in diatom assemblages showed river-specific features. Bray-Curtis dissimilarity index values did not increase as a function of spatial distance among the sampled reaches within any river but the Malheur. Standardized Mantel r of association between assemblage similarity and spatial distance among sites ranged from a high of 0.69 (Malheur) to a low of 0.18 (Chehalis). In the Malheur River, % monoraphids, nitrogen-tolerant taxa, and beta-mesosaprobous taxa all decreased longitudinally while % motile taxa, especially Nitzschia, showed an opposite trend, reflecting a strong in-stream water quality gradient. Similar longitudinal trends in water quality were observed in other rivers but benthic diatom assemblages showed either weak response patterns or no patterns. Our study indicated that benthic diatom assemblages can clearly reflect among-river factors. The relationships between benthic diatom assemblages and water quality within each river may depend on the strength of the water quality gradients, interactive effects of water quality and habitat conditions, and diatom sampling design. This study analyzes the relationship between physical and chemical factors and the algal communities in tropical streams in micro-watersheds where >70% of their area has different land uses, specifically, cloud mountain forest, coffee plantations, and livestock pastures. Physical, chemical, and biological variables were measured monthly in each stream over a 1-year period. The concentrations of nitrates + nitrites, total suspended solids (TSS), and silica in the streams were found to differ during the dry and rainy seasons. Coffee-plantation streams showed the highest levels of suspended solids, nitrates + nitrites, and sulfates. Based on chlorophyll a concentration, the forest and coffee-plantation streams are oligo-mesotrophic, while pasture streams are meso-eutrophic. Forest streams displayed the lowest levels of richness and algal diversity, followed by coffee-plantation streams, whereas pasture streams were the most diverse. Chlorophyll a concentration and species richness depended on land use and season. Forest coverage was positively correlated with acidophilous and oligo-eutraphentic diatom species. Coffee coverage displayed a significant positive correlation with motile species and a significant negative correlation with pollution-sensitive diatom taxa. The results show that diatom assemblages responded to micro-watershed conditions and can be used to monitor the effects of land use on streams in tropical regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diatom-based stream bioassessment is constantly being improved to meet the increasing demands of water quality management. This study examined whether percentage of live diatoms (PLD) in periphyton communities can be used as a metric of human disturbance in streams and rivers. The analyzed dataset (587 sites) was collected over the course of 3 years (2000-2002) from 12 Western US states (US EPA's Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program). The mean PLD in Western streams and rivers was low (34.50%) and highly variable (range 2.08-97.02%). It did not differ significantly between the Mountains (MT, 36.38%) and the Xeric (XE, 35.49%) ecoregions, but it was significantly ( P < 0.05) greater than that in the Plains ecoregion (PL, 28.27%). PLD distinguished reference from impacted sites in the MT ( P < 0.05) and somewhat in the PL ( P = 0.05). However, PLD exhibited opposite patterns in the two ecoregions. It increased with human disturbance in the MT and decreased in the PL due to a potential subsidy-stress gradient of available resources. The different pattern may be largely interpreted by the quality of the reference conditions in each ecoregion. In the MT ecoregion, the selected reference sites may resemble very closely the natural state in this ecoregion. In contrast, human disturbance is much more pervasive in the low-land PL ecoregion and the 'reference sites' may reflect the best attainable conditions in this ecoregion. PLD as a metric has potential for monitoring human disturbance of streams, if reference sites represent natural conditions and differing responses among regions are included in expected effects. Benthic diatoms are important indicators of human impacts on streams. Epilithic diatoms are collected most often for bioassessments, but potentially important ecological information from other habitats could be missed. Within our study region, substrata ranged from 100% rock to 100% sandy silt at 61 sites, leading us to question the appropriateness of sampling solely epilithic surfaces in riffles. We compared two protocols for collecting diatoms: (1) epilithic habitat samples (EHS) within riffles and (2) multi-habitat samples (MHS), which proportionately included different habitats (e.g., riffles and pools) and substrata (e.g., sand, silt, and rock). Three streams were not compared because rocks were absent. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling indicated that diatom communities from EHS and MHS responded similarly to alkalinity and agricultural gradients, and Procrustes analysis showed that ordinations were similar ( P < 0.01). Percent motile diatoms and metrics indicating high or low P and N from MHS showed stronger relationships with land use variables than those metrics from EHS. Bray-Curtis (BC) similarity between the protocols increased as diversity and richness decreased in MHS, as agricultural impacts increased, and as motile diatoms became more abundant in EHS, which likely indicated greater habitat homogeneity or an overriding effect of water chemistry. The two protocols classified 78% of sites concordantly as minimally impacted or impacted. Multi-habitat sampling is preferred where stream habitats vary greatly because it assessed land use impacts more effectively than EHS, while indicating water chemistry impacts as effectively. Multiple habitats also contained greater species diversity, which is important to documenting species distributions, and were always available for sampling, whereas epilithic habitats could be sparse or absent. Periphyton is a commonly used biomonitoring tool for streams. Often only one or few riffles are sampled and assumed to be representative of a stream reach. Current literature focuses on periphyton heterogeneity at small scales, on individual rocks within a riffle, and larger scales, within watersheds or ecoregions. The intermediate scales, within single riffles or among riffles, have not been adequately addressed. The purpose of this research was to determine how many riffles must be sampled in order to represent a reach and whether the number of necessary riffles varied with stream health. Since periphyton is sensitive to habitat change, it was hypothesized that heterogeneity would be primarily partitioned among riffles. Eight to ten consecutive riffles were sampled at eight individual stream reaches. Sampled reaches were categorized based on previously collected bioassesment data: three non-attaining, three partially-attaining, and two fully-attaining water quality standards as defined by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. Data were analyzed using the Bray-Curtis Similarity Index, Hill’s N2 dominance diversity index, and the Acid Mine Drainage Diatom Index of Biotic Integrity. Diatoms appeared to be patchily distributed within a reach. This patchiness often led to varied relative abundance of common species and the introduction or loss of rare species among riffles. To account for this variation within a reach, at least two riffles should be sampled. However, a multimetric index may correctly classify a stream based on a one-riffle sample. There are many rivers in northwest Spain as a consequence of the mountainous landscape and the granitic geology subjected to Atlantic influences. Water and epilithic diatoms samples were collected at 72 sites in Galicia flowing into the Atlantic Ocean and Cantabrian Sea in summer 2002–2003 and spring 2004. These sites included minimally disturbed sites, defined as reference sites, and impacted sites which were influenced by different human pressures. We used the diatom assemblages to calculate diatom indices using the Omnidia software, but we also developed new metrics based on the similarity of species composition in reference sites. The response of the metrics was tested in relation to physicochemical variables. We developed a diatom multimetric index (MDIAT) as a combination of metric values. The sensitivity of the MDIAT to organic and nutrient stressors supports the use of this index to classify the ecological status of Galician rivers. The MDIAT showed higher correlations with some variables and nutrients than the individual metrics. According to the MDIAT, 69% of the sites sampled in Galician coastal rivers achieve good ecological status. The MDIAT has been developed specifically for Galician granitic rivers (NW Spain), and has been intercalibrated at the European level in the Central Baltic Rivers GIG. Physical constrains such as water discharge, suspended solids and turbidity act as dominant factors in driving the planktonic diatom assemblages of the River Adige (North-Eastern Italy). Two sampling stations, characterised by different hydromorphological features (Cortina all’Adige and Boara Pisani, with torrential and more potamal characteristics, respectively) were sampled fortnightly following an integrated approach encompassing physical, chemical and biological measurements and aiming at identifying the dominant factors controlling the temporal development of the community. A morpho-functional approach was used to classify the diatom assemblages where Morpho-Functional Diatom Groups (MFDG) were defined for diatom genera, according to their morphology, habitat selection and modality of adhesion to river substrate. In the two sampling points, algal growth was never limited by nutrients or zooplankton. The irregular development of MFDG was determined by the stochastic hydrological events and changes in variables related to water discharge (suspended solids and light attenuation). Tychoplanktonic, benthic and drifted taxa (such as Diatoma spp., Encyonema spp., Navicula spp. and Nitzschia spp.) were dominant in the torrential station (Cortina all’Adige), while the contribution of euplanktonic unicellular centric taxa (such as Cyclotella spp., and Stephanodiscus spp.) was higher in the potamal station (Boara Pisani). Diatoms have been routinely used to monitor the ecological status of French rivers. Since 2000, this monitoring has been carried out to comply with the Water Framework Directive. Ecoregions corresponding to the aquatic fauna and flora of rivers were originally defined on the basis of physical descriptors, designated “hydro-ecoregions” in France. Since, they have been simplified into diato-ecoregions for diatoms. In this study, data sets for benthic diatoms from rivers in north-eastern France were used to identify four main groups of diatom assemblages. The first such assemblage is found in small rivers with crystalline geologies in mountainous massifs with neutral to slightly acidic pH. The second assemblage occurs in small rivers flowing on limestone in lowland regions with an alkaline pH. The third corresponds to the assemblage found in large rivers in limestone lowland regions, and the fourth in highly mineralized rivers with high levels of chloride. Within each of these main assemblages, several communities have been characterized corresponding to different levels of pollution: from pristine to highly polluted. Multivariate analysis showed that the underlying geology was the main factor structuring the diatom assemblages, followed by the pollution level. River size had little impact on diatoms. Statistical tests showed that diato-ecoregions provided little information about diatom assemblages in the studied region, whereas there was a close correlation between diatoms and hydro-ecoregions. Nevertheless, these hydro-ecoregions did not account for the diatom assemblages in the highly mineralized rivers. These ecoregions could be further improved by merging the hydro-ecoregions of the crystalline mountainous massifs, all of which shared the same diatom assemblages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Morphological variations of the Caloneis schumanniana (Grunow) Cleve species complex were studied using multivariate analysis. Populations of three species, synonymized in the literature, i.e., C. schumanniana, Caloneis limosa (Kützing) Patrick and Caloneis lewisii Patrick, were analyzed. Their morphological and ecological characteristics were evaluated and outlined for the sampled streams by US EPA’s Western Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program. Geographic separation among the three taxa was not resolved. This study showed that C. schumanniana has wider ecological tolerance than C. limosa and C. lewisii. Despite the ecological overlap, specific ecological preferences of C. limosa and C. lewisii were described. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Didymosphenia geminata is a stalk-forming freshwater diatom which was historically found primarily in oligotrophic lakes and streams, but has recently become a nuisance species in many lotic systems worldwide. In the last 5–8 years, D. geminata has become established in Boulder Creek and South Boulder Creek, two regulated montane streams in the Front Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Factors that may influence the growth of D. geminata were monitored during the summer of 2006. D. geminata abundance decreased in Boulder Creek after an unusual flood event caused by 3 days of sustained rainfall in the headwaters of the watershed. However, within a week, coverage had been restored to pre-flood levels. Variations in D. geminata abundance among sites were found to be negatively correlated with total dissolved phosphorus concentrations and bed movement, as measured by Shields stress. In contrast, D. geminata abundance was not significantly correlated with temperature, conductivity, pH, total suspended solids, or dissolved inorganic nitrogen. Our results suggest that bed movement may be a dominant scouring mechanism that acts to control the growth and distribution of D. geminata. The potential role of total dissolved phosphorus and bed movement in decreasing D. geminata coverage adds to the limited base of knowledge regarding controls on the growth and distribution of this species, and could be investigated by researchers studying D. geminata blooms in other stream ecosystems. The association of diatom assemblages to salinity was studied in 95 lakes and streams ranging from freshwater to hypersaline in the south-west of Western Australia. The relationship between environmental variables and species composition was explored using canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and partial CCA. Salinity was shown to account for a significant and independent amount of variation in the diatom data, enabling a transfer function to be developed based on the final dataset, which consisted of 89 sites and 150 diatom taxa. The most successful model was derived using tolerance-downweighted weighted averaging. Summary statistics showed that the transfer function performed very well with a high coefficient of determination and low prediction errors that remained high after the cross-validation method of jackknifing ( r = 0.97 and r = 0.89). This suggests that salinity can be accurately predicted using relative abundances of diatoms, and the model can now be applied to paleolimnological reconstructions. However, the transfer function also provides the basis for use in future biomonitoring studies to detect increases in salinity for lakes and streams most at risk, as well as to evaluate the success of remediation measures implemented to secondary salinised systems. The European Union (EU)’s Water Framework Directive (WFD) requires that all Member States participate in intercalibration exercises in order to ensure that ecological status concepts and assessment levels are consistent across the EU. This paper describes one such exercise, performed by the countries in the Central/Baltic Geographical Intercalibration Group stretching from Ireland in the west to Estonia in the east and from the southern parts of Scandinavia to the northern regions of Spain and Italy (but excluding alpine regions, which were intercalibrated separately). In this exercise, methods used to measure ecological status of rivers using benthic diatoms were compared. Ecological status is estimated as the ratio between the observed value of a biological element and the value expected in the absence of significant human impact. Approaches to defining the ‘reference sites’, from which these ‘expected’ values were derived, varied from country to country. Minimum criteria were established as part of the exercise but there was still considerable variation between national reference values, reflecting typological differences that could not be resolved during the exercise. A simple multimetric index was developed to compare boundary values using two widely used diatom metrics. Boundary values for high/good status and good/moderate status set by each participant were converted to their equivalent values of this intercalibration metric using linear regression. Variation of ±0.05 EQR units around the median value was considered to be acceptable and the exercise provided a means for those Member States who fell significantly above or below this line to review their approaches and, if necessary, adjust their boundaries. It is unclear whether differentiating live and dead diatoms would enhance the accuracy and precision of diatom-based stream bioassessment. We collected benthic diatom samples from 25 stream sites in the Northern Oregon Coast ecoregion. We counted live diatoms (cells with visible chloroplasts) and then compared the counts with those generated using the conventional method (clean counts). Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) showed that the diatom assemblages generated from the two counts were overall similar. The relationships between the two diatom assemblages (summarized as NMDS ordination axes) and the environmental variables were also similar. Both assemblages correlated well with in-stream physical habitat conditions (e.g., channel dimensions, substrate types, and canopy cover). The conventional diatom method provides taxonomic confidence while the live diatom count offers ecological reliability. We investigated the potential for using diatoms to monitor and assess nutrient enrichment in coastal plain streams using weighted-averaging inference models and diatom trophic indices. Samples were collected from low-gradient, clay- to sand-bottom streams in New Jersey (NJ), USA, using artificial substrates (diatometers). Multivariate analysis showed that conductivity was overall the most important explanatory variable. Total phosphorus (TP) explained a significant proportion of the variation in diatom species composition. There was statistical justification for development of inference models for TP but not for total nitrogen (TN). We developed and tested models for inferring TP using weighted-averaging (WA) and weighted-averaging partial least squares (WA-PLS) regression and calibration techniques. We also created a diatom TP index by rescaling the inferred TP values. WA-PLS provided the best model ( n = 38), which showed moderate predictive ability ( r = 0.43; RMSEPboot = 0.30 log10 μg l−1 TP); it performed best at lower TP concentrations and tended to underestimate values above 100 μg l−1. The TP index performed well; it assigned the majority of the index scores to the correct nutrient category. TP models and indices developed for the Coastal Plain had lower predictive ability than those developed for northern NJ and streams in other comparable geographic regions of the US. This lower performance can be attributed primarily to a data gap in the TP gradient in the calibration dataset (lack of sites with TP concentrations between 240 and 560 μg l−1), and a smaller number of samples. We conclude that diatom-based TP inference models and artificial substrate sampling are useful for assessing and monitoring nutrient enrichment in coastal plain streams. We studied the formation of dissolved silicon loads from rivers to lakes, the development of diatoms in lakes and the role of climatic forcing on the silicon cycle in three river-lake systems in Sweden, Estonia and Northern Germany. We found coherent seasonality in the silicon loads of the two northern rivers, which was probably caused by the common snow-type hydrology of the catchments as distinct from the rain-type hydrology of the catchment, further south. The similarity among lakes in the dynamics of the Si-related variables studied resulted from similarities in mean lake depth and mixing type rather than the climatic regime. Among the variables measured at the three sites, river water discharge responded most coherently to climatic forcing as synchronized by the North Atlantic Oscillation winter index (NAOw). Water discharge and Si load were strongly linked variables and showed coherent patterns among the river systems. We found significant season-specific correlations of the NAOw with either the biomass or the share of diatoms in each lake, but no coherent pattern among the lakes. Diatom blooms in the middle reaches of the shallow, freshwater, Hunter River, Australia, are a frequent nuisance to river users. During a 4-year study, blooms of Cyclotella meneghiniana and Nitzschia spp. coincided with water temperatures above 23°C and flows below 400 Ml d−1 that lasted for more than 12 days. Redundancy analysis showed that water temperature was positively related, and antecedent flow was negatively related, to the abundance of both taxa. Addition experiments indicated that nutrients are seldom limiting to growth. It is suggested that a combination of faster growth rates at higher temperatures and longer retention times at low flows allows bloom populations to develop. Simulation modelling showed that flow regulation and water extraction have decreased flows in the river during summer, and consequently have probably increased the number of diatom blooms. The estuary of the lower River Murray features a complex mosaic of lakes, coastal lagoons and interconnecting channels. The waters of these wetlands are degraded as a result of river regulation, water abstraction, salinisation, sedimentation and the recent constriction of the River mouth. Palaeolimnologial analysis of sediment cores in two wetlands reveals that salinity in the large terminal Lake Alexandrina was only moderately influenced by tidal inflow, particularly over the past ca. 2000 years. It is now largely fresh as a result of isolation by a series of barriers completed by 1940 AD. In contrast, the seaward portion of the Coorong, a back barrier coastal lagoon, was determined to be a subsaline estuary strongly influenced by marine inflows. These findings contrast somewhat with the Coorong’s current Ramsar classification as a saline lagoon. Riverine diatoms, typical of the fossil flora of Lake Alexandrina, are rare or absent in the Holocene sediments of the Coorong, other than for a short period in the late Holocene in the northernmost end of the lagoon. The palaeolimnological evidence for independent evolution of these wetlands is consistent with geomorphic evidence of a stranded, last interglacial shoreline that acted as a sill limiting the exchange of flows between Lake Alexandrina and the Coorong lagoon. In the context of a main project that aims to recover modern data on diatom distribution applicable to paleosalinity reconstructions in coastal areas of Southern South America, the composition and distribution of dead diatom assemblages in the littoral zone of the Quequén Salado estuary (Argentina) were studied. Diatom zones were defined along the estuarine gradient by cluster analysis and related to the salinity range and sediment composition by Canonical Correspondence Analysis. Four diatom zones were identified. A mixture of marine, brackish and freshwater diatoms, probably allochthonous, characterized the inlet (zone I). Marine/brackish taxa, represented mainly by Paralia sulcata dominated zone II, characterized by polyhaline conditions and sandy sediments. Zone III was characterized by mesohaline conditions, muddy sediments and the dominance of the estuarine diatom Amphora helenensis. Brackish/freshwater and freshwater diatoms dominated the headwaters (zone IV), where salinity was always below 5‰. The comparison of Quequén Salado diatom assemblages with previous results from the Quequén Grande estuary showed a similar taxonomic composition between both estuaries. However, differences in the salinity ranges of the estuaries (related to differences in the degree of human impact and tidal range) lead to a displacement in their spatial distribution along the longitudinal estuarine axis. This paper contributes to the knowledge of the ecological requirements of South American estuarine diatoms and provides useful data for paleosalinity reconstructions in the region. Multivariate predictive models are widely used tools for assessment of aquatic ecosystem health and models have been successfully developed for the prediction and assessment of aquatic macroinvertebrates, diatoms, local stream habitat features and fish. We evaluated the ability of a modelling method based on the River InVertebrate Prediction and Classification System (RIVPACS) to accurately predict freshwater fish assemblage composition and assess aquatic ecosystem health in rivers and streams of south-eastern Queensland, Australia. The predictive model was developed, validated and tested in a region of comparatively high environmental variability due to the unpredictable nature of rainfall and river discharge. The model was concluded to provide sufficiently accurate and precise predictions of species composition and was sensitive enough to distinguish test sites impacted by several common types of human disturbance (particularly impacts associated with catchment land use and associated local riparian, in-stream habitat and water quality degradation). The total number of fish species available for prediction was low in comparison to similar applications of multivariate predictive models based on other indicator groups, yet the accuracy and precision of our model was comparable to outcomes from such studies. In addition, our model developed for sites sampled on one occasion and in one season only (winter), was able to accurately predict fish assemblage composition at sites sampled during other seasons and years, provided that they were not subject to unusually extreme environmental conditions (e.g. extended periods of low flow that restricted fish movement or resulted in habitat desiccation and local fish extinctions). This study examines the ecological effects of serial impoundments (three dams) on a rocky upland stream in southeastern Australia. Physical, chemical and biological changes were quantified and interpreted within a three-level hierarchy of effects model developed previously by Petts [1984, Impounded Rivers. John Wiley and Sons, New York] and the Australian Rivers Assessment System (AUSRIVAS) to predict pre-dam biota. First-order effects were decreased median monthly discharges and floods of lesser magnitude following construction of the dams. No effect on water characteristics (pH, electrical conductivity and major ions) was evident. The second-order effect on channel morphology was a decrease in bank-full cross-sectional area by up to 75% because of reduced flows. At all sites, the predominantly cobble streambed was armoured and generally highly stable. The discharge required to initiate movement of the streambed surface sediments (38.9 m3 s−1) was 40% less frequent since construction of the dams, implying alteration to the natural disturbance regime for benthic biota. Benthic algal growth appeared more prolific at sites directly below dams. Fewer macroinvertebrate taxa than expected and modified assemblages within 1 km of all three dams were third-order effects. Compared to reference conditions, macroinvertebrate samples from the sites directly below the dams had relatively more Chironomidae larvae, Oligochaeta and Acarina, and fewer of the more sensitive taxa, Plecoptera, Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera and Coleoptera. This study assessed benthic macroinvertebrates and periphyton and its responses to managed river-flows, in riffles downstream of three dams on the Cotter River, Australian Capital Territory. Benthic macroinvertebrates and periphyton were also assessed in adjacent tributaries of the river, as well as in a nearby unregulated river and its tributaries. Food sources of four macroinvertebrate taxa (Leptophlebiidae, Elmidae, Glossosomatidae and Orthocladiinae) were determined by stable isotope analysis of the invertebrates and their potential food, in conjunction with examination of the gut contents of individual invertebrates. Components of benthic periphyton were the main food source for the selected taxa. Orthocladiinae consumed primarily amorphous detritus, while Elmidae, Glossosomatidae and Leptophlebiidae consumed diatoms. Enclosed benthic chambers were used to measure the response of benthic metabolism to monthly flow spikes released from one of the dams. The balance of benthic metabolism as measured by the Production/Respiration ratio (P/R) showed a shift towards production after the release of flow spikes. At sites downstream of the dams, there was more periphyton chlorophyll-a in the form of filamentous green algae than at sites in the unregulated river and the tributaries, and macroinvertebrate taxa using periphyton as a food resource were missing or reduced in abundance relative to sites without dams. However, the site downstream of the dam with environmental flow releases had more macroinvertebrate taxa and less periphyton cholorophyll-a content than sites downstream of dams without managed environmental flows, suggesting that a more suitable food supply resulting from environmental flow releases shifted macroinvertebrate communities towards those of unregulated streams. Diatoms and macroinvertebrates are both commonly used for biological assessment of stream condition. As the use of biological assessment techniques increases, resource managers will need to make decisions on which biological tool to use for a particular study. In a study of the Kiewa River, Victoria, Australia we assessed these two components of the biota—macroinvertebrates and diatoms—using indices and pattern analysis, and comparing them with an a priori landscape classification. We also assessed the relationship exhibited between the biological results and environmental variables which are usually significant in stream ecosystems. To make the data comparable we used categorical abundances for both data sets. The pattern analyses showed complementary results, with diatoms more closely related to water quality variables, whereas macroinvertebrates were primarily related to catchment and habitat features. An analysis of a combined data set (diatoms plus macroinvertebrates) showed no extra information was gained. Using categorisation to create consistency between data sets was shown to reduce the information and affect results from the diatom analyses. The results suggested that the locally derived bioassessment models and indices provided a more accurate assessment of the sites than the overseas-derived diatom index. The outcomes are complicated by issues of data weighting, whereby a presence/absence diatom index may have performed better than abundance-weighted indices due to strong dominance of one or two species at a site. Here we summarize results of the EU funded research project STAR concerning the suitability of different organism groups (fish, benthic invertebrates, macrophytes, diatoms) for monitoring European rivers. In a general way, the suitability of the organism groups is classified by monitoring type, stress type, river type, temporal scale and taxonomic resolution. For example, although all organism groups are affected by acidification, the relatively low species richness of fish and macrophytes in small mountain streams makes these two groups less suitable, and, hence, we argue that benthic diatoms and/or invertebrates may be considered as more robust indicators. The effects of urban pollution from Hanoi city on the benthic diatom communities of the Nhue–Tolich river system were studied during the 2003 dry season. Benthic diatoms were allowed to grow on glass slides suspended in the water flow for 4 weeks. To reveal the relationship between water quality and diatom communities, Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used on data concerning relative abundances of diatom species and environmental variables. Two diatom indices, IPS and DAIpo, were applied to evaluate water quality in the three rivers. A total of 291 diatom taxa were found in the Red, Nhue and Tolich Rivers. These were mainly cosmopolitan taxa, with some tropical, subtropical and endemic taxa. The most abundant taxa at the Red site were Aulacoseira granulata, Achnanthidium minutissimum, Encyonema minutum, Navicula recens and other halophilous taxa such as Nitzschia kurzii, Seminavis strigosa, Entomoneis paludosa, Bacillaria paradoxa. Diatom assemblages at the Tolich site consisted mainly of Nitzschia umbonata, Nitzschia palea and Eolimna minima. Diatom density ranged from 660 to 30,000 cells/cm2. Environmental variables and diatom assemblage composition at all sites were significantly correlated. Two diatom indices gave similar results and indicate the Tolich River with the lowest values as a highly polluted site. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We studied herbivory and grazer performance (i.e., fitness correlates) for the hydrobiid snail Potamopyrgus antipodarum, the leptophlebiid mayfly Deleatidium spp., and the conoesucid caddisfly Pycnocentrodes aeris, common, co-occurring algivores in many New Zealand streams. Grazing effects and costs of coexisting differed among these taxa reared at ambient densities in different combinations in microcosms with algal food conditions (on clay tiles) characteristic of heavily grazed streams. The prostrate diatoms Staurosirella leptostauron, Cymbella novazealandia, and Achnanthidium minutissimum were the dominant algal species on pre- and post-grazed tiles. The relative abundance of erect physiognomic forms, dominated by Synedra ulna and Fragilaria vaucheriae, were 2–3× higher in ungrazed controls and in snail alone treatments than in other grazer treatments. The green filamentous algae Mougeotia sp. and Stigeoclonium lubricum, and the cyanophyte Merismopedia glauca were present only in ungrazed controls. Grazers significantly reduced algal community biomass in treatments by 26–52% relative to controls, except snails alone. Snails (15–30%) burrowed into surrounding sand substrates, dampening their grazing impact on tiles. Caddisflies were more effective than mayflies or snails at removing algae because of higher foraging rates, a larger body size, and an abrasive sand-grained case. Algal biomass reductions did not affect grazer growth. However, pre-pupation rates of caddisflies and emergence rates of subimago mayflies were significantly higher in caddisfly-alone and mayfly-alone treatments, respectively, than in combined-species treatments. These results imply that a limited periphytic food supply ( < 0.3 mg AFDM cm−2) even over a relatively brief period ( ≤ 16 d) may have population-scale consequences for co-existing P. aeris and Deleatidium spp. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We analyzed diatom and water chemistry data collected by The Academy of Natural Sciences from 47 rivers throughout the eastern United States to address several ecological questions. How does the composition of diatom assemblages vary over large regional scales? What are the most important environmental factors affecting assemblage composition and how does their influence vary among regions and with spatial scale? How do distributions and autecological characteristics of individual taxa vary spatially? What are the implications of answers to these questions for use of diatoms as water quality indicators? Data for 186 samples at 116 sites were collected from 1951 to 1991 on moderate- to large-sized rivers ranging from Maine to Texas as part of Academy monitoring and survey programs, most initiated and implemented by Dr. Ruth Patrick. Several sites were highly impaired by point and non-point source pollution. Diatom assemblages grouped into four main categories, based on multivariate analyses. Group membership correlated equally well with intermediate-scale geographic regions and water chemistry: (1) Northeastern US rivers with lower alkalinity and hardness, and pH 6.5–7.8; (2) Primarily dilute coastal plain rivers in the southeastern United States with the lowest average pH (5.5–7.3) of all sites and some with high DOC; (3) Rivers within and west of the Appalachian Mountains, generally having higher pH (>7.5) than those in other regions, but with relatively low chloride concentrations; and (4) Gulf Coast rivers with the highest chloride (>100 mg l−1), hardness (>250 mg l−1), and pH of rivers in all the groups. Hardness, pH, alkalinity, and Cl explained most of the variation among diatom assemblages, based on ordination analysis. Factors related to water quality problems, such as BOD, P, NH4, and turbidity explained much less variability at the eastern US scale, but were more important in the four intermediate-scale regions. Diatom taxa abundance-weighted mean values for water chemistry characteristics varied among the four intermediate-scale regions, often greatly, and in proportion to the average measured values for each region. Design of calibration data sets for development of water quality indicators should account for spatial scale in relation to species dispersal, regional geochemistry and habitat types, and human-influenced water chemistry characteristics. We characterized changes in diatom assemblages along an urban-to-rural gradient to assess impacts of urbanization on stream conditions. Diatoms, water chemistry, and physical variables of riffles at 19 urban and 28 rural stream sites were sampled and assessed during the summer base flow period. Near stream land use was characterized using GIS. In addition, one urban and one rural site were sampled monthly throughout a year to assess temporal variation of diatom assemblages between the urban and rural stream sites. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed that the 1st ordination axis distinctly separated rural and urban sites. This axis was correlated with conductivity ( r = 0.75) and % near-stream commercial/industrial land use ( r = 0.55). TWINSPAN classified all sites into four groups based on diatom assemblages. These diatom-based site groups were significantly different in water chemistry (e.g., conductivity, dissolved nutrients), physical habitat (e.g., % stream substrate as fines), and near-stream land use. CCA on the temporal diatom data set showed that diatom assemblages had high seasonal variation along the 2nd axis in both urban and rural sites, however, rural and urban sites were well separated along the 1st ordination axis. This study examines distributional patterns of benthic diatom assemblages in relation to environmental characteristics in streams and rivers in the California Central Valley ecoregion. Benthic diatoms, water quality, and physical habitat conditions were characterized from 53 randomly selected sites. The stream sites were characterized by low mid-channel canopy cover and high channel substrate embeddedness. The waters at these sites were enriched with minerals and turbidity varied from 1.3 to 185.0 NTU with an average of 13.5 NTU. A total of 249 diatom taxa were identified. Average taxa richness was 41 with a range of 7–76. The assemblages were dominated by Staurosira construens (11%), Epithemia sorex (8%), Cocconeis placentula (7%), and Nitzschia amphibia (6%). Multivariate analyses (cluster analysis, classification tree analysis, and canonical correspondence analysis) all showed that benthic diatom assemblages were mainly affected by channel morphology, in-stream habitat, and riparian conditions. The 1st CCA axis negatively correlated with mean wetted channel width ( r = −0.66) and thalweg depth ( r = −0.65) (Table 4). The 2nd axis correlated with % coarse substrates ( r=0.60). In this study we manipulated both nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in stream mesocosms to develop quantitative relationships between periphytic algal growth rates and peak biomass with inorganic N and P concentrations. Stream water from Harts Run, a 2nd order stream in a pristine catchment, was constantly added to 36 stream-side stream mesocosms in low volumes and then recirculated to reduce nutrient concentrations. Clay tiles were colonized with periphyton in the mesocosms. Nutrients were added to create P and N concentrations ranging from less than Harts Run concentrations to 128 μg SRP l−1 and 1024 μg NO3-N l−1. Algae and water were sampled every 3 days during colonization until periphyton communities reached peak biomass and then sloughed. Nutrient depletion was substantial in the mesocosms. Algae accumulated in all streams, even streams in which no nutrients were added. Nutrient limitation of algal growth and peak biomass accrual was observed in both low P and low N conditions. The Monod model best explained relationships between P and N concentrations and algal growth and peak biomass. Algal growth was 90% of maximum rates or higher in nutrient concentrations 16 μg SRP l−1 and 86 μg DIN l−1. These saturating concentrations for growth rates were 3–5 times lower than concentrations needed to produce maximum biomass. Modified Monod models using both DIN and SRP were developed to explain algal growth rates and peak biomass, which respectively explained 44 and 70% of the variance in algal response. The Oregon Coast Range, rich in natural resources, is under increasing pressure from rapid development. The purpose of this study was to examine diatom species patterns in relation to environmental variables in streams of this region. Diatoms, water quality, physical habitat and watershed characteristics were assessed for 33 randomly selected stream sites. Watershed size, elevation, geology, vegetation and stream morphology varied substantially among sites. Streams were characterized by dilute water chemistry and a low percent of fine substrate. A total of 80 diatom taxa were identified. Taxa richness was low throughout the region (median 15, range 10–26). Assemblages were dominated by two adnate species, Achnanthidium minutissimum and Achnanthes pyrenaicum. Diatoms sensitive to organic pollution dominated the assemblages at all sites (median 85%). Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) and correlational analysis showed quantitative relationships between diatom assemblages and environmental variables. NMDS axes were significantly correlated with watershed area, watershed geology, conductivity, total nitrogen, total solids and stream width. Diatom-based site classification (Two-way Indicators Species Analysis, (TWINSPAN)) yielded 4 discrete groups that displayed weak correlations with environmental variables. When stream sites were classified by dominant watershed geology, overall diatom assemblages between groups were significantly different (Analysis of Similarity (ANOSIM) global R = 0.19, p < 0.05). Our results suggest that streams in the coastal region are in relatively good condition. High natural variability in stream conditions in the Oregon Coast Range ecoregion may obscure quantitative relationships between environmental variables and diatom assemblages. A bioassessment protocol that classifies sites by major landscape variables and selects streams along the major human disturbance gradient might allow for detection of early signs of human disturbance in environmentally heterogeneous regions, such as the Pacific Northwest. The potential use of epilithic diatoms as indicators of organic pollution was evaluated in Gravataí River, RS, (latitude 29°45′–30°12′ S; longitude 50°27′–51°12′ W). The river suffers agricultural impacts in its upper course and urban and industrial organic pollution in its lower course. Epilithic diatoms were sampled eight times from September 2000 to August 2002, at six sites. Species were identified and densities and relative abundances of populations were determined. Simultaneously, physical, chemical and microbiological variables were measured (water temperature, conductivity, turbidity, pH, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand, ammonium, organic nitrogen, total nitrogen, ortho-phosphate, total phosphate, chloride and faecal coliforms). In order to interpret the environmental and biological variables, discriminant analysis and the TWINSPAN methods (Two-Way Indicator Species Analysis) were applied. The results indicated that the concentrations of ortho-phosphate, ammonium, total organic nitrogen, BOD5 and faecal coliforms characterized a pollution gradient along the river, where changes in the abundance or species composition were observed. Species were classified into three groups: Group A, including species more tolerant to heavy organic pollution and eutrophication, represented by Luticola goeppertiana, L. mutica, Eolimna subminuscula, Nitzschia palea and Sellaphora pupula; Group B, comprised of tolerant and widely distributed species such as Eunotia bilunaris, Frustulia crassinervia, F. saxonica, Navicula cryptocephala, N. cryptotenella, Nitzschia palea var. tenuirostris, Surirella angusta, Pinnularia microstauron and Ulnaria ulna and Group C, with less pollution tolerant species represented by Eunotia sp. and Gomphonema parvulum. Epilithic diatoms of mountain rivers from the upper Segre catchment (Oriental Pyrenees) were studied in 1998, during three different seasons: March, July and September. Four rivers, the river Segre and its three most important tributaries, Duran, Molina and Querol, were sampled in upstream and downstream stretches. The diatom communities were comparable in all upstream stretches of these mountain rivers draining siliceous substrates. Dominant taxa were Achnanthidium subatomus, Diatoma mesodon, Encyonema cf. minutum, E. silesiacum, Fragilaria arcus, F. capucina, Gomphonema calcifugum, G. pumilum, Meridion circulare and Nitzschia pura. Changes in water quality in the downstream stretches lead to the appearance of pollution tolerant taxa, such as Eolimna minima, Gomphoneis minuta, Navicula gregaria, and Nitzschia inconspicua. As a result, the values obtained with the diatom water quality indices (IPS Specific Polluosensitivity Index, CEE and IBD Biological Diatom Index) decreased. The diatom community composition and the derived water quality values did not change in the upstream stretches over the year. In contrast, significant changes were observed in the downstream stretches with best water␣quality in July, during high flows due to melting snow, and worst values in September, during low␣discharge.
