The author reflects on the importance of art and discusses the differences between the humanist and religious perspectives on art. The history of great art made in the service of religion is addressed, and the need for humanism as an ideology to embrace and champion art is articulated. The inspiration and comfort which art can supply is necessary for a complete experience of the human condition, the author believes.
